Today In History
Born January 26, 1892, Elizabeth “Bessie” Coleman became the first woman of African American and Native American descent to earn an aviation pilot’s license, as well as the first person of African American and Native American descent to earn an international aviation license from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale.
Aviation professionals and aficionados continue to be inspired by Bessie’s daring and determination.
“The air is the only place free from prejudices. I knew we had no aviators, neither men nor women, and I knew the Race needed to be represented along this most important line, so I thought it my duty to risk my life to learn aviation.”

Miles Davis - Jazz Villa, St. Louis, Missouri, May/June 1963
Posting through the panic? Yeah, I guess. As the country I call home chooses fear, nihilism and chaos once again — again! — I have to find solace in music ... somehow. At the moment, I truly have no idea what else to do.
So there's a fresh Miles Davis Bootleg Series coming out any minute now, which gathers several discs of live performances in France from 1963 and 1964, when Miles was getting together with younger musicians like Tony Williams, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, George Coleman, expanding and exploring his signature sound. There's plenty of stuff from this era around, of course, but it's always a pleasure to hear it cleaned up and presented in a way befitting of these sterling, still exciting performances.
As an addendum, check out Davis, Williams, Hancock and Coleman in their first extant live recording, an audience tape made just a couple weeks before they'd head out to Europe for a series of festival dates. The Jazz Villa! Sounds nice, right? This collection of musicians hadn't been together long, but they seem have already gelled, spurring their leader on to some seriously soaring heights. The MVP, however, might be Coleman, who — once Shorter solidified the Second Great Quintet's lineup — might not get his due these days. But his solos are all fantastic, curious and inventive and lively, especially on the killer "All Blues." A song for today, a song for every day for the foreseeable future! ALL BLUES.

Don Byas: The Bridge Between Swing and Bebop
Introduction: Don Byas was a pivotal figure in the evolution of jazz, helping to create a bridge between the swinging big band era of the 1930s and the more harmonically complex world of bebop in the 1940s. A tenor saxophonist with a unique and lyrical sound, Byas possessed technical mastery that set him apart from his contemporaries. His ability to blend rich, flowing melodies with the…

Today In History
Gary Coleman, known for his childhood role as Arnold Jackson in the sitcom “Diff’rent Strokes” was born in Zion, Illinois on this date February 8, 1968.
Coleman’s common exclamation on the show, “What’choo talkin’ ‘bout, Willis?”, quickly became a pop culture catch-phrase.
He went on to appear in the film “On the Right Track,” and TV movie “The Kid With the Broken Halo,” which was later adapted into the cartoon series “The Gary Coleman Show,” among other projects.
“Biggie Smalls is the illest, your style is played out, like Arnold on that, “What you talking ‘bout, Willis?” - The Notorious B.I.G., The What, Ready To Die

Michael Whelan's cover for the last Barsoom book, John Carter of Mars. Appropriately enough, John Carter, Dejah Thoris, and Tars Tarkas are flying off into the sunset.
This is an odd, mish-mash of a book that did not exist until 1964, fourteen years after the series' creator, Edgar Rice Burroughs, passed away. The publisher, Canaveral Press, took two John Carter short stories that had not been previously reprinted, jammed them together, and voila! - there was an eleventh Barsoom book. Every company that has published the series since then has printed the eleventh book, along with the original ten.
Of the two stories, Burroughs himself only wrote one, Skeleton Men of Jupiter. It was a novelette that first appeared in the magazine Amazing Stories in 1943. Burroughs intended it to the first of a series of interconnected stories, like those that made up Llana of Gathol, but he never followed-up. World War ll was raging the time and Burroughs, despite being in his 60s, was a war correspondent. He continued his fiction writing during the war, but the bulk of his attention was focused on Tarzan, who was big business. After the war Burroughs' health steadily declined until his death in 1950.
The other story in John Carter of Mars was written by Burroughs' son, John Coleman Burroughs. The younger Burroughs was an artist, and provided illustrations for many of his father's books. He also drew the Sunday newspaper comic strip John Carter. In 1940 he wrote and illustrated the Better Little Book (the new name for Big Little Books) John Carter of Mars, although his father was credited as the author. A year later the tale was beefed up considerably and appeared in Amazing Stories as John Carter and the Giant of Mars.

~ Theory ~
Ok so maybe this is an obvious theory maybe someone already came up with this but I think I have a theory that connects all three adaptions of Wonka together.
If you have not yet seen "Wonka" please be warned, spoilers ahead just a trigger warning.
The theory is....
Wonka's parents divorced and Wonka went to live with his mother until she passed away and he went back to his father, as his father was a dentist and hated anything to do with candy, he made him wear a brace and forbid from eating candy so Wonka his the bar that his mother gave him and kept it with him in secret. When he discovered the taste of chocolate, he decided to follow his mothers footsteps and become a chocolatier something that angered his dad and then he run away.....
Short but bittersweet.
Seeing "Wonka" did answer the question about what happened to his mother and the fact they covered songs from the original movie and I believe that after the experience that Wonka had with Prodnose, Slugworth and Ficklegruber, i think that's why he created the test for the children in the original adoption to see who was honest and loving and not selfish and spoilt.
This is my theory but i could be very wrong.
