How to Identify and Report Elder Abuse
Tumblr media
Elder abuse is a distressing and, unfortunately, common issue affecting the elderly population worldwide. Recognizing and promptly reporting the signs of abuse is crucial in protecting our senior citizens. In this article, the Home Care Cincinnati assistant guides you through identifying and reporting elder abuse, empowering you to positively impact the lives of vulnerable individuals.
Understanding Elder Abuse
Elder abuse manifests in diverse ways, encompassing physical, emotional, financial, and neglectful mistreatment. Its occurrence spans private residences, care facilities, and communities at large. Recognizing elder abuse necessitates a vigilant understanding of distinctive signs linked to each form, empowering individuals to identify and address these issues effectively. Awareness and education play pivotal roles in combating this pervasive problem, fostering environments where the elderly can age gracefully and free from harm.
Physical Abuse
Physical abuse involves the use of force that causes injury or bodily harm. Signs to look out for include unexplained bruises, fractures, burns, or marks on the elderly person's body. Pay attention to their demeanor, as sudden changes in behavior or fear of certain individuals may indicate physical abuse.
Emotional Abuse
Emotional abuse can be subtle but is equally harmful. Watch for signs such as withdrawal, depression, anxiety, or unexplained mood swings. If the elderly person appears fearful, agitated, or unusually quiet in the presence of specific individuals, it may suggest emotional abuse.
Financial Abuse
Financial abuse involves the unauthorized or improper use of an elder's funds, property, or assets. Watch for unexplained financial transactions, sudden changes in financial circumstances, or missing valuables. Be cautious if someone is pressuring the elderly person to make financial decisions against their will.
Neglect
Neglect occurs when caregivers fail to provide adequate care and support. Signs may include untreated medical conditions, poor personal hygiene, malnutrition, or unsafe living conditions. Pay attention to the overall well-being of the elderly person, including their living environment and physical health.
Identifying and Reporting Elder Abuse
Be Observant
Frequent visits and regular communication with your elderly loved ones or neighbors are essential for identifying potential abuse. Observe any unusual behavior, physical changes, or signs of distress that may indicate mistreatment.
Listen to Their Stories
Engage in open and non-judgmental conversations with the elderly person. Listen to their experiences and pay attention to any hints or direct mentions of abuse. Sometimes, victims may drop subtle clues or express their concerns indirectly.
Educate Yourself
Familiarize yourself with the common signs of elder abuse and the different forms it can take. Many organizations, such as the National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA), provide valuable resources and information to help you understand the complexities of elder abuse.
Document the Signs
Should you observe any indicators of abuse and meticulously record details, including dates, times, and specific observations? These documented insights become crucial when reporting the abuse to relevant authorities, offering a comprehensive account that aids in addressing and preventing further harm to the elderly individual.
Report to Adult Protective Services (APS)
In the United States, Adult Protective Services (APS) is a government agency dedicated to safeguarding the well-being of elderly and vulnerable adults. If you suspect elder abuse, contact your local APS office. Provide them with detailed information and express your concerns about the elderly person's safety.
Contact Law Enforcement
If there is an imminent threat or a life-threatening situation, promptly reach out to local law enforcement. Their swift response ensures a comprehensive investigation and immediate intervention to shield the elderly individual from further harm. Time is of the essence in such critical situations, emphasizing the importance of swift action for the well-being of the senior citizens involved.
Seek Legal Assistance
If you suspect financial abuse, seek guidance from an attorney or contact the financial crimes division of local law enforcement. Legal professionals possess the expertise to assist you in reporting the abuse and initiating steps to recover assets. Their assistance ensures a strategic approach to addressing financial exploitation and protecting the elderly's financial well-being.
Conclusion
Recognizing and reporting elder abuse is a collective duty to establish a secure space for our senior citizens. Through sustained awareness, self-education, and prompt actions, we can actively participate in preventing and addressing elder abuse. Let's illuminate this often-overlooked concern and guarantee that our elderly family members experience their later years with the honor and care they deserve. Consider Cincinnati home care services to provide tailored support, ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for your loved ones.

“The Aid” (Character Sheet)
Tumblr media
How it began /vs/ where we are now (Picrew)
Playlist | Vibes | Ability Breakdown | Masterlist | Character Info |
Overview: The morning after his 18th birthday, a Mystic telepathic empath sells himself into high-class slavery at a Chattel Services Inc. facility in order to help his family flee from a war-ravaged and disease-ridden post-apocalyptic world. Stripped of his name, he is addressed only by his newly appointed ID number and later his trained designation title—The Aid. He is quickly bought by Madame Eleanor Sullivan, a So-Cal socialite, and the prestigious Sullivan family matriarch, to serve her as her live-in caregiver and confidant. After her death five years later, The Aid is bequeathed to Eleanor’s troubled and sadistic son, Wyatt. Surviving a year and a half of Wyatt’s draconian rein as his new Master, The Aid’s once plentiful optimism runs out when Wyatt’s relentless torture has no end in sight. Voice: measured, even tone, modulated and silvery. Typical North American accent.
Smells like: clean, zesty and sweet, like aloe, cactus flower, with a hint of citrus.
Face claim(s): I have been going back and forth with this forever. No one will quite look exactly like him, but I’ve finally concluded, after much deliberation, that he looks a combination of Iwan Rheon (left and top middle) and this random Russian guy I found on Pinterest, Arseniy Popov (bottom middle & right). However, both of them are a bit older than he is, so just 🌈imagine🌈 them aged down a little bit. Also, yes, it’s more than ironic that the guy who plays one of Wyatt’s character inspirations, Ramsy fucking Bolton, is also an Aid face claim. Full circle moment or cosmic horror? You decide.

Looking for CGs/ Sibs/ Friends :)
Hey all, gonna try to make this post without looking too needy :(
Long story short my agere side is kinda lonely. I’m just trying to see if I have any sibs (big or same as me) or Caregivers in my area or beyond. Strictly platonic; and for playdates, fun, and friendship!
You don’t have to message or share publicly if you don’t want. I’m just looking for a way to connect with others and make more friends, as I don’t have many I can meet in person.
I have lots of interests and we don’t have to get together right away! In fact, I’d be comfortable if we talked a bit first!
I live in the Cincinnati, OH area but can travel quite a bit to cities a few hours away if need be.
If anyone in the agere community could please (whether your local to me or not) share I am quite lonely and while I love being little alone; I would really love to have someone to hang with occasionally and talk to!
Thanks for listening and reading everyone!

Criminology: Angels of Mercy, the Doctors of Death
In criminology, there is a very rare type of serial killer referred to as “angels of mercy,” also referred to as “angels of death” or “healthcare serial killers.” These types of serial killers are usually employed as a some sort of caregiver or someone in a position of power, such as a night nurse in a hospital or a member of staff at a nursing home. People with a pathological interest in power over who lives and who dies are attracted to careers in the medical field or related fields so they have the opportunity to have that kind of power. The general modus operandi of an angel of mercy is that they deliberately cause harm to or kills a patient under their care.
There are three cardinal types of angels of mercy: the mercy killer, the sadist, and the malignant hero.
The mercy killer determines that their victim is beyond help, suffering unnecessarily, and would be much better off if someone were to end their struggle, though this conclusion may be a delusion, and their victim is not actually beyond treatment.
The second type of angels of death is the sadist. Sadistic angels of death use their position of power to exert their need to control over their victims.
The last type of healthcare serial killer (or just simply HSK) is referred to as the “malignant hero.” Those who are malignant heroes intentionally endangers the life of a patient and then proceeds to pretend an attempt to “save” them. The central motivation of this HSK is attention and accolades. They want the family of the victim, their own family, their coworkers, and friends to be proud of them and think of them as a great person. Some malignant heroes even pretend to try to revive the victim by using CPR or other methods knowing that they’re already dead. Those who kill in order to “save” their victims are labeled of having Munchausen syndrome by proxy, which is classified as a factitious disorder.
There are many possible motivations that lead HSKs to murder, including money, acquiring a twisted sense of pleasure, the belief that they are genuinely easing their patient’s suffering, and sometimes, simply because they can. An odd recurring characteristic of angels of death is a criminal history of fraud. The famed serial killer H.H. Holmes was involved in confidence tricks and insurance scams. Harold Shipman had a prior conviction of forgery and fraud.
If you work in the medical field, fret not. There are some distinct red flags and warning signs to tell if your coworker is an angel of mercy. Angels of mercy obviously have higher rates of death occurring on their shift, and generally prefer night shifts, as it reduces the risk of getting caught. Angels have extreme difficulty forming and maintaining interpersonal relationships. They have a history of mental illness, especially personality disorders. If they make you and your other colleagues anxious, uncomfortable, or even if you just don’t feel right about them, your brain could be giving you danger signals. You are not being judgmental, rude, or unprofessional. Your brain is smart, and usually if your instinct is telling you that something just ain’t kosher, something is probably wrong. If they keep drugs in their locker or at home, that could be an indicator as well. Angels of death gain notoriety among their colleagues for having extremely detailed and morbid discussions with the bereaved relatives of their victims. They switch hospitals frequently to make it so that they’re not at a hospital long enough for people to notice their climbing body count. They do not react to discipline very well; they will argue with their boss when being corrected about even the smallest thing. They are obsessed with death - it’s all they talk about. In order to prevent the offender from being able to carry out their urges, your first step would be to heavily monitor access to drugs and track who takes what and when.
As time goes on, a phenomena described in criminology occurs called “escalation.” The broad definition of escalation in terms of criminology is the process by which an offender goes from committing lesser crimes to more serious ones. In terms of angels of mercy, as time passes their behavior escalates from murdering those who are legitimately beyond help to those who are perfectly healthy or still have effective treatment options.
Angels typically use the method of injection of deadly substances that only show up in toxicology reports. For this reason, the elderly are most vulnerable to HSKs because when they die, nobody argues when the paperwork says that their cause of death was natural causes. The injection of a deadly dose of insulin to cause overdose in the most common injection method, and a fourth of the angels of death have used this technique. They have also used bleach, muscle relaxants, potassium, and opiates. However, Beverly Allitt, an English nurse, used suffocation.
The first example of a mercy killer we will discuss is Jane “Jolly Jane” Toppan. Jane Toppan was arrested in 1901, after which she confessed to a total of 33 homicides. Jane would administer a drug to her patients, and then would lie in bed with them as they died, holding them close; she was reportedly sexually aroused by death and the concept of it. She also enjoyed the rush of harming her victims and then attempting to revive them.
Tumblr media
Harold Shipman worked as an English family doctor and was active between 1975 and 1988. He made it appear that his patients died of natural causes, and was sentenced for the murder of 215 people, though it is speculated that he killed around 250.
Tumblr media
Richard Angelo would inject a patient with a toxic substance and then rush to his victim’s room to attempt to save them in hopes to be a hero to the family; he confessed to 25 homicides.
Tumblr media
Donald Harvey worked in Cincinnati at Drake Memorial Hospital, where he killed over 50 people, though he was only charged for 37 of them. His primary method was to administer his patients arsenic and cyanide slipped into their food. He was caught when the coroner opened up the body of one of his victims in an autopsy and noted a very strong smell of almonds, which is a warning sign associated with the use of cyanide. In his trial, Harvey claimed that he was putting his patients out of their misery. He died an prison after being beaten by a fellow inmate.
Tumblr media
Genene Jones was sentenced 99 years in prison in the year 1982 for the murder of Chelsea McClellan, an infant she injected with three shots of succinylcholine, a drug which causes paralysis and muscle relaxation, the combination of which stopped her heart. Though at the time she was only charged for her murder it is strongly suspected that she killed dozens more children, as there was a significant spike in infant deaths whenever she was on her shift. They also successfully charged Jones for an additional murder of Josh Sawyer that she committed in 1981. It is believed that Jones is classified as a malignant hero, for the reason that she wanted to cause emergencies so she could play the savior.

A bill introduced in May by two Republican legislators in Ohio aims to tighten parental control over transgender children and teens who seek mental health and medical care — even if the kids suffer as a result.
Ohio House Bill 658 would turn school employees, psychologists, and social workers into spies of a sort; the legislation mandates that they disclose to parents if a minor approaches them with questions about gender identity or seeks mental health care for gender dysphoria. And if they don’t inform the child’s parents — regardless of concern for the safety or wellbeing of the child — they would face felony charges.
“No government agent or entity shall purposely or knowingly authorize or provide gender dysphoria treatment for a child without the written, informed consent of each of the child's parents and the child's guardian or custodian, as required in section 2131.144 of the Revised Code,” says the text of HB 658. “A violation of this section is gender dysphoria treatment without parental consent, a felony of the fourth degree.”
Rep. Thomas Brinkman, the legislation’s primary sponsor, told Ohio’s WKSU that the bill was inspired by a single court case, in which a Cincinnati juvenile court judge gave custody of a 17-year-old trans boy over to his grandparents because his parents refused to support his gender identity and tried to place him in conversion therapy.
But Erin Upchurch, executive director of the Kaleidoscope Youth Center in Columbus, says the LGBTQ+ youth that access Kaleidoscope’s services could be harmed by the prospective law.
“Every medical and psychological association agrees that transition-related care is medically necessary,” says Upchurch. “Making sure that this stays between doctors and patients and isn’t a one-size-fits-all situation is really important.”
Kaleidoscope, home to the Ohio GSA Network of student “Gender and Sexuality Alliance” clubs, serves LGBTQ+ youth between the ages of 12 and 20. 80 percent of those kids cite isolation and loneliness as the primary reason for visiting the center.
Upchurch, who has a 20-year background in social work, says that 49 percent of the LGBTQ+ youth that come to Kaleidoscope identify as transgender or nonbinary. Many of them already struggle for acceptance at home. While the custody case that inspired HB 658 was unusually extreme, Upchurch says that every parent or guardian has a different level of comfort when it comes to their child’s gender issues.
“There’s a middle ground, where maybe [the parents] support pronoun use or affirming names but they don’t support medical care. There’s a spectrum, and most of our families fall sort of in the middle,” says Upchurch.
Being alienated from family members can make an already difficult situation much worse for trans youth in Ohio. The state has no laws protecting trans people from discrimination, and in a July 2017 video produced by the ACLU of Ohio, trans adults from the state shared their experiences of housing and employment discrimination. And the national lansdscape is similar: according to the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey, 19 percent of trans adults report having been fired, denied a promotion, or not being hired for a job because of their gender identity or expression.
The GOP legislation would likely have the most impact on school staff and caregivers. In Ohio, as in most U.S. states, the consent of a parent is already required in order for a minor to start hormone treatments or have gender-affirmation surgery. And the state already mandates that both parents, regardless of relationship, be notified of a name and gender change on identity documents. Even if there is no known father, for example, the child’s mother has to prove that they sent a notification in the mail to the person they think might be the father before the child’s name or gender can be legally changed. Essentially, it’s already an arduous process for a minor to undergo gender transition in Ohio.
But mental health providers are not currently required to break patient confidentiality in order to warn parents that a child is exploring their gender identity — and this bill would require them to, under threat of a felony if they don’t comply.
The law would also impact the ability of judges to make rare custody decisions based on the welfare of a child. Specifically, it states that a parent or guardian cannot have any “adverse action” brought against them if they refuse to permit treatment for gender dysphoria — including a legal complaint saying the child is being abused or neglected, or a “determination of custody by a juvenile court.”
Columbus resident Andrew Wooldridge, 19, was lucky to have the support of his mom. The Ohio native started on hormone blockers at age 13 to prevent the onset of puberty, and began a testosterone regimen at age 15. He says that access to hormone therapy, and having a parent who supports his gender identity, was vital.
“It saved my life, to put it simply. I was extremely depressed and suicidal before starting hormone blockers, and they saved me from having to have top surgery,” Wooldridge says. “Testosterone made it possible for me to go through puberty at the correct time along with my peers.”
Wooldridge has since continued transition-related treatment, he says, taking a break from college to undergo a hysterectomy and the first two stages of phalloplasty over the past year. For him, it was essential to pursue treatment as soon as possible rather than waiting until later in adulthood: “It's essential that kids are able to develop with their peers and address the gender dysphoria that they experience as soon as possible, to avoid depression and suicide.”
One of the notable things about Ohio’s HB 658 is that it says little about how to help trans kids with supportive parents access care, while making a dire situation worse for kids whose parents don’t want them to be transgender. Wooldridge says that effort could be better placed towards educating more doctors and expanding options.
“The major cities (Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland) all have providers that are willing to see trans youth, but the lack of competency and accessibility among some of these doctors puts kids at risk of not receiving the healthcare they need,” says Wooldridge. “On top of this, there aren't many — if any — rural doctors educated on dysphoria, hormone blockers, and HRT [hormone-replacement therapy]. The Midwest needs more resources for people who aren't in major cities.”

Starved Homeless Dog Wanders The Streets, Becomes A “Bag Of Bones” With No Home
In Anderson Township, near Cincinnati, a critically underweight Weimaraner was discovered walking alone.
The skeleton creature was discovered by a Good Samaritan and promptly sent to the Cincinnati Animal CARE shelter. The level of the dog’s malnourishment astounded the workers. They gave him the moniker Hemingway and connected him up to fluids to keep him alive.
Hemingway could not move for the first few days and had to be carried around. When the unfortunate infant tried to get up, his muscles had deteriorated, and he wobbled and fell. He was always cold and would spend the entire day wrapped up in his warm blanket. His caregivers put him on a specific food as part of a planned weight growth program after consulting with his veterinarian. After that, he was placed in a medical foster family.
Hemingway began to show indications of progress during the next two weeks. He was able to walk on his own for the first time. He started communicating with his foster parents and pet siblings gradually. His energy levels rose as his emaciation faded, and he joyously embraced his funny, fun-loving nature! Hemingway has gained a total of 18 pounds in four weeks, which is an unquestionable win!

Excel In Career With PALS Certification Cincinnati
What is child CPR?
When a child's breathing or heartbeat has stopped, pediatric CPR, also known as resuscitation, is performed to save their lives. This could occur following drowning, poisoning, suffocation, choking, or injury. Rescue breathing is used in pediatric CPR to oxygenate a child's lungs and chest compressions are used to keep the child's blood flowing. A child's brain damage or death might happen within minutes if their blood supply ceases. As a result, you must keep performing CPR until the victim's breathing and heartbeat resume, whichever comes first, or until emergency medical assistance arrives.
Tumblr media
The percentage of kids who survive to be discharged following an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest varies by age: 13% for kids, 4.9% for babies, and 17% for teenagers. Families and caregivers of young children need to know the proper way to administer Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, as it is different from Adult treatment, as we hope to never have to use it. Whether they are eating a meal or snack or enjoying water play, caregivers never know when a child may need to have CPR administered. That’s why it is essential to undergo PALS Certification Cincinnati training.
How does pediatric and standard CPR differ from one another?
There are several ways that pediatric patients can affect resuscitation that is physically and physiologically different from adult patients. A child's jaw, for instance, is smaller than an adult's and offers less space for movement. Even though adult and pediatric CPR are quite similar, rescuers should begin CPR before dialing 911. American Heart Association (AHA) recommendations state that if you're the only one nearby and must choose between performing CPR and dialing 911, perform CPR. Why? The chances of a youngster surviving are substantially higher because they are more resilient than an adult. Call 911 if CPR and rescue breathing have been performed for two minutes.
A manual defibrillator should be used on newborns younger than one-year-old. Automated external defibrillators can be utilized in the absence of manual defibrillators. Some AEDs contain a switch that can be configured to shock children. If the AED is unable to provide a pediatric shock, an adult shock should be administered. It is imperative to keep in mind that a deadly cardiac rhythm may be treated with an electric shock.
Pediatric CPR Instruction
Since the 1980s, significant improvements have been achieved in pediatric CPR training in the US. The American Heart Association began providing training in pediatric advanced life support in 1988. It provided a foundational understanding of pediatric cardiopulmonary arrest for pediatric healthcare professionals of all levels. The first Advanced Pediatric Life Support (APLS) course was presented in 1984 by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Emergency Physicians. It was made to be more thorough and included a range of pediatric situations in addition to basic resuscitation. These two courses have evolved into the most common curricula those hospitals in the US that have demanded pediatric healthcare professionals during the previous 20 years.
