If there’s one thing that brings our divided nation together, it’s our hatred of junk fees.

Junk fees are extra charges you don’t know you’re paying until you get the bill. They hide the true cost when you buy a good or service, so it’s impossible to comparison shop. For example…

Say I want to travel to go see my favorite musician Dolly Parton play at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry.

When I book my plane ticket, I have to fork up extra cash to bring luggage or change my flight. My grandkids are more into Blippi than Dolly — so they won’t be traveling with me. Otherwise, I might have to pay a fee just to sit with them.

I need a rental car once I land, so I’ll be stuck paying an extra fee to pick up the car at the airport and another fee they never told me about to cover the rental company’s costs for disposing old tires. Seriously?

When I pay my hotel bill, the price is way higher than I thought I’d pay when I booked the room, to cover wi-fi, pool access, a gym, state and local taxes and other special fees.

Before I get to the show, I better look at my checking account balance if I want to buy a record. Even if I see that I have enough money to make a purchase, the timing of other charges hitting my account could result in me getting slapped with a surprise overdraft fee. It's a simple mistake, but could make a $20 record end up costing $50.

Oh and don’t forget the concert tickets themselves. Major ticket sellers like Ticketmaster tack on fees to attend shows, which can drive up the final ticket price as much as 78% percent higher than what I was told the initial price was.

It’s all bait-and-switch. You thought you could afford to see Dolly Parton, but it turns out it’s gonna take a lot more than working “9 to 5”.

Corporations often label these types of charges “convenience fees” or “service fees.” Probably because they “conveniently” “serve” to pad their bottom lines, costing Americans at least $29 billion dollars a year we didn’t expect to pay. This is a huge problem spanning many different industries — not just the ones I’d encounter on my trip.

But there’s good news: President Biden has urged Congress to draw up legislation to prevent these outrageous fees.

Turns out, one of the few things as popular as Dolly Parton is tackling junk fees.

My Fandom Informed Experience Attending the 2024 USGP in Austin TX

Hey!  I just wanted to share my favorite experience at the 2024 USGP in Austin TX.  My goal is to provide some tips and general information from a fandom perspective to those thinking about attending in the future!  I've been to many comic cons, two Supernatural conventions, plenty of Ren faires, tons of baseball, soccer, hockey, basketball, football games as well as a number of horse races and concerts.  So that's my background.  Read if you want!

Thursday 

So we flew into TX on the Thursday before.  The airport and rental cars were a nightmare.  Be sure to book ahead and separately (don't book the car through the airline) and confirm as much as you can by phone.  (I'm a paranoid anxious traveler, but also with the UT vs. Georgia game the same weekend the greater Austin are probably increased in size by 400,000-500,000 people that weekend so…)

Anyway, we got to our Airbnb in a Northern suburban area and then took a train downtown (the returning train is at like 8 so might not be a good option for you, but I have a weird train thing).  There was amazing BBQ and the downtown is decent, no Chicago or Nashville, but pretty cool.  There were some pop-up F1 events (that we missed because my dad wanted to see the bats fly out of the bridge (they didn't come out that night)) that you should totally look into and try to go to.  We checked out the music scene and bars and then called it a night.  Not a lot of night life happens downtown till later, so wouldn't really recommend that kinda stuff, but if that's your thing definitely check it out!

Friday

Let's get into the good stuff.  We bought our general admission and Lot R parking pass ahead of time.  I highly recommend this, but it's a pretty long walk so be prepared for that reoccurring theme for the whole weekend.  We got to the circuit around 8ish, took about 15-20 minutes to get parked and were inside the gates by around 9.  When we got in there were a ton of experiences and stores and whatnot.  I went straight to the fan stage because none of the driver interviews were advertised online.  There was a schedule on the screens there.  So it's very important to get there when the gates open to see the schedule and secure a spot to watch.

We then walked around to all the GA viewing spots just for fun.  Early in the day Friday is the only time you'll be able to do this without waiting in significant lines to cross bridges or service roads.  We watched FP from the area between T2 and T3 then SQ from T19.  Great spots and some interesting people to meet.  Merch is hella expensive, but ya gotta get something at the track just because.  COTA Merch is much more reasonable than the F1 stuff.  I also got a branded personalized cowboy hat with my initials and the shape of the circuit which was pretty cool!  

We didn't stick around for Sting because we wanted to go to Academy Sports and Outdoors to buy some $6 fold up chairs.  You need these for GA.  Believe me.  Sitting on the ground on dried up dusty Texas drought stricken grass sucked.

Saturday 

We managed to sneak water into the track and some snacks as well which helped a lot because food was expensive.  $20 a meal per person and $16 for a beer roughly.  We also got the race radios from Amex with my card, although they seemed to give them to anyone really.  

I insisted we get there as the gates were opening which is good because it got us front seats for the driver interviews.  They were really cool but only about 10mins per team and then Hass and RBR shared a slot.  

I knew going into it that I would not meet any important people and would not get much exposure to the drivers.  So that realistic expectation was very helpful.  It's a sporting event for hundreds of thousands of spectators after all and I'm a simple musician and office worker so I couldn't afford anything like paddock club passes.  GA was under $500 which I thought provided A LOT of value.  Money well spent.  That being said, seeing the drivers IRL was still really really cool and fulfilling in a reasonably healthy way.  Would a picture or handshake been cool like when I met Jared, and Jensen in Nashville at a SPN con?  Yes.  But that's NOT what kind of event this is, which I knew going into it.  All that to say, if you want to go to meet a driver and engage in that kind of fan event, it's likely not realistic.  But I love the sport as well so the race was my real reason for attending and talking with other fans was cool.  I wouldn't bring up RPF if I was you…. But I could tell the amount of lore I knew about the drivers and their interconnected careers did raise some suspicion amongst those I talked to.  But I'm paranoid.  Mostly people (my dad mostly lol) were impressed with how much I knew about the actual racing.

Anyway.  We watched the sprint and qualy in the shade in front of the T10 grandstands which was perfect to then get into the entrance for Eminem after (my dad wanted to see him, I couldn't have cared less).  Then we left before he was done and beat all the traffic.

Sunday

We got to parking lots when they were supposed to open (note that they changed the traffic pattern that day so keep your wits about you.  There's not much signage to help on Elroy Rd.) and they were already open and starting to fill.  We wanted to sit at turn one which took us close to an hour to walk there.  There's always a line to cross the track on the bridges.  There's a tram but we never used it.  That day they were randomly checking bags, but they didn't look in my backpack so not an issue for me and my food and water.

By the time we made it to Turn one it was already packed but we managed to get a decent spot.  This was 8:30am. 

The good News is there are a ton of other races going on during the day so you don't get too bored waiting seven hours for the actual race.  Plus there's the drivers parade and the delight of getting to shout “boos” and curses at the rich fuckers getting hot laps and special track tours on semi trailers.  So definitely worth getting there early.

Speaking of "boos", the only real ones I heard were for the rich people and the governor of Texas (for obvious reasons) there was some booing of Max, but not too much.

We also chatted with the people around us.  Lots of Checo fans and the guy in front of me was a Max fan but was “tired of him winning all the time” and was wearing a Norris jersey.  So.  Hot take.  Interesting people.  But really fun to talk with.  People get possessive of their spot so get to know those around you to secure yours and gain goodwill.

It's hot and sunny.  Bring sunscreen.

The national anthem and fighter jet flyover is cool and had me feeling patriotic.

Then the race which was a religious experience to see in person.  Seeing the pit stops even from afar and seeing the tires strategy.  Watching the overtakes and shouting and cheer with other fans was just indescribable.

After Charles won we quickly made our way to get into the long line to watch the podium ceremony from the track.  This is very cramped so he prepared.

The podium celebration was amazing and I took a few rocks from the gravel trap and rubber pebbles from the tires home as a souvenir.  Probably not supposed to, but hey.

We saw all the cars being inspected in parc ferme which was cool and then walked around the track to exit at T19.

Traffic getting out was hell, but my dad wanted air conditioning, which was in the car.  So….  I'd recommend doing something during that time like going up in the tower or doing other experiences or just hanging out.  Let the traffic die down.

We flew out the next morning.  TSA was packed and took some time so I advise getting there at least 3 hours early or more.  I have precheck and it was still an ordeal.

So all around a fantastic weekend that I will cherish forever.  My dad was even tolerable if not even enjoyable to be around, so the whole thing about fathers and their gay sons and Motorsports brings people together. Blah blah blah.

Good news everyone! Georgia has federal passenger train study funding!

In combination with some great news about funding a lot of sorely needed railroad projects and studies at the federal level, Georgia’s U.S. Senators Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock announced new grants to explore three new Georgia passenger rail corridors, made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

The new rail routes would connect major economic centers in Georgia and neighboring states, providing additional public transit options, increased mobility, and a sustainable, clean-energy future.

Starting from Atlanta, the routes being studied are:

A route heading northward with stops likely in Marietta, Cartersville, Dalton and points north into Tennessee that would connect with Chattanooga and efforts in that state to create a line from there to Nashville.

Extending south and eastward, a route that would likely have intermediate stations in McDonough, Macon and end in Savannah with a connection to the Amtrak route linking Florida and DC on the east coast. There’s also the potential to create a branch that would go due south out of Macon, through Valdosta and link with Tampa or Orlando. It would be nice to get some two-state talks going with Florida on doing something together since Brightline is already plying the rails down there and its now a known quantity.

Perhaps the most interesting and likely first to get going is a high-speed line between Atlanta and Charlotte. The in-state routing on this one is not known, but it’d be very strange if Athens was missed. The growing South Carolina towns of Greenville/Spartanburg definitely and perhaps Anderson/Clemson would get stops depending on routing.

Another point of discussion is where exactly in Atlanta would these routes be emanating from; ATL’s current train station for Amtrak service on the thrice weekly Crescent service from DC to New Orleans is basically a glorified waiting room with rails and stairs that lead to Peachtree Rd just north of Midtown. There were some efforts to build a new multimodal station Downtown right across from the Five Points MARTA station, right where a bunch of railroad tracks pass through a trench. While we do need a world-class rail terminal for a world-class city like Atlanta (especially to help get a commuter rail service off the ground — more on that later,) let’s not ignore our 900-pound gorilla lying 8 miles south: Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Literally the World’s Busiest Airport for 20+ years definitely needs to be tied into any long-distance (and commuter!) rail options here. The catchment area of passengers includes not just the entire state but anything that would beat a car ride from an area of about 200 miles in diameter around us. Every time I’ve been in one of Hartsfield’s parking garages, I’ve seen cars with South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee tags that are definitely not rentals. With frequent enough service, it could be very possible to simply leave the car and take the train to the airport and catch a flight. Most Americans can’t realize this convenience right now but take it from me after living in Japan for almost 20 years, being able to just hop a train even in the most remote parts of the area and get to Haneda, Narita, Kansai and Nagoya Centrair airports without worrying about long-term parking or begging for a ride from friends is a great thing.

According to Axios, how much of the $8.2 billion will wind up in Georgia for its rail project — or the timeline for the project’s start and completion is a big question mark. One thing I’d like to know is does some of this money help look into a regional rail solution here around Atlanta that’s desperately needed. Just like NYC, LA and Chicago, whatever helps the commuter rail network, would ultimately be good for the longer distance trains as well since they could share the tracks. That ATL Trains idea is still the best idea I’ve ever seen and really, REALLY needs to be formally studied with this money. Check out the 146-page prospectus yourself, it’s that good!

Just like the Eisenhower Interstate Highway projects of the 1960s, the US really needs a rail renaissance in order to help face this brave new world of climate change, population and demographic shifts into sunbelt cities that didn’t keep up infrastructure-wise (building another lane isn’t cutting it Chief!) and the simple paradigm shift of decentralization in our metro areas in general– How many people do you know BEFORE the pandemic that worked “downtown?” OK, now how many people actually even go to an office every day? Our transportation network needs to be more dynamic and flexible to account for these shifts and overlaying a decent rail network, both nationally and locally, is paramount. This is in addition to dealing with improving road and air travel; those need to be sorted as well.

Tyler likes it when Jamie holds him like this: likes the feeling that he could stop supporting his own weight, and Jamie would still be holding him up. He kind of wants it to go on for a while longer, but Jordie’s already in the car, and Jamie can’t keep the team waiting. “Yeah, of course,” Tyler says, and leans in for a last kiss before Jamie heads out the door.

The first bit is totally fine. Tyler’s been in the house without Jamie a bunch over the last couple weeks. The babies wake up from their nap, and Tyler changes and feeds them with help from Denna and Stephen. Tyler likes them a lot so far: Stephen likes to sing silly songs to the babies, and Denna’s quieter but laughs a lot, so they’re both fun to have around. Plus Stephen’s a wolf, a beta, and Denna’s sister is a wolf, so they get what the babies need.

Tyler finishes feeding them—it takes a while to nurse five babies—and Denna and Stephen go off to do chores and stuff. Then Tyler’s the only adult in the room. It’s not a problem: he has two babies at his chest and three of them tucked into the group carrier Jamie’s mom got for them, full and happy. Except then he starts thinking about how if anything happened he’s all five of them are depending on him, five whole lives and they’re all trusting him to be responsible, to take care of them, to know what to do about everything--

“Denna!” he calls out, startling Anna at his chest and making her whimper.

Denna comes in a minute later. “Anything I can do?”

“Sorry, can you just—be in here with me? With them? For a little bit?” Tyler winces at himself.

She doesn’t look like it’s too weird a thing to ask or anything. “Sure,” she says, and sits down on the floor and starts playing quietly with the other babies while Tyler nurses. His breathing relaxes.

“I don’t even get it,” he says to Jess later that night when she’s back from class and they’re heating up a meal-service dinner. “It hasn’t even been a day yet. He was gone longer than this when they played Nashville last week.”

“You knew he was coming back that night, though,” Jess says. “It’s different.”

“Yeah.” Tyler runs his hand over Peter’s head. He likes to cycle through them, keeping one of them in the baby sling at all times: he knows it’s good for them, and he likes feeling them all warm and close like that. “But, like, there are so many other people, there’s Stephen, and Denna, and you—”

“He’s your bondmate,” Jess says. She rolls her eyes, but in a nice way. “It’s not like you can just replace him with other people.”

“Right. Right,” Tyler says.

It does help, the reminder that it’s okay to feel this way without Jamie. That it’s normal to feel like his world is unsettled, a chair missing a leg, that there’s this low-level ache in his chest all the time. But it doesn’t really fix anything.

He hopes the ache isn’t getting through to the babies.

Tyler goes to bed early that night. They moved the babies into the master bedroom a week or so ago, into a special crib that attaches to the side of the bed. It has a lip, so that the babies don’t roll out while they’re sleeping, but Tyler can curl up on his mattress with his head on a pillow to see over the lip and feel like he’s right there with them. It’s so much better than being alone.

Only two nights. He can make it two nights, right? He got through nine months of not having Jamie after he moved to Dallas. Two nights is nothing. That’s only like a thousand-something minutes.

Tyler’s phone lights up, and he leaps for it. “Hi,” he whispers.

“Hey,” Jamie says. The tightness in Tyler’s chest is relaxing just at the sound of his voice. “You’re quiet, are you okay?”

“Oh, yeah, the babies are just asleep.”

“Oh no.” Jamie drops his voice, too, because he is a dork and maybe doesn’t know how phones work. “Do you want me to call back when—”

“No,” Tyler says a little too quickly. “Don’t. I.” A wave of delayed anxiety hits him, makes it hard to breathe for a sec. “Is—is the road trip good?”

“No,” Jamie says. “I shouldn’t be here. I should be there with you guys, not across the country, playing this fucking—”

“Playing hockey,” Tyler says. He remembers when that felt important, back before the five tiny people before him eclipsed everything. He knows it’s still important, in some corner of his mind. Will be important again. “You’re where you’re supposed to be.”

“You’re not okay, though,” Jamie says. “I’m not okay. This—this isn’t okay.”

He sounds even worse than Tyler feels. That’s not how it usually works: Jamie’s the one who’s fine, the one who makes Tyler feel better. But then, Jamie’s the one who’s far away right now. Tyler’s just has to do without Jamie; Jamie has to do without all of them.

It’s a weird feeling, being the one who’s less upset about something. It makes Tyler feel just a little bit calmer. He can do this. He can be what Jamie needs, just like he’s being what the babies need.

“The babies are okay, though,” he says. “We’re okay. We just have to get through two nights, and then you’ll be back here for a whole eight days.”

“Yeah.” He hears Jamie let out a shuddering breath. “Two nights, and then I can be there with you. I can be holding you.”

“Yeah.” Tyler feels the ache of that longing echo through the bond: the longing for Jamie with his arms around him, for that warmth that soaks in through his skin and fills him to overflowing. “Yeah, you can.”
