NATALIE WOOD
NATALIE WOOD
20 July 1938 - 29 November 1981
Natalie Wood was an American actress born in San Francisco to Russian emigrants. She began her career as a child actor. She is best known for starring in Miracle on 34th Street, Rebel Without a Cause and West Side Story. She was married three times (twice to Robert Wagner) and had two children. Woods had a phobia of drowning, due to almost drowning whilst filming The Green Promise in 1949.
In 1981, Natalie Wood, 43, and Wagner were on a yacht named Splendour in Santa Catalina Island, California; also on board was Christopher Walken and Captain Dennis Davern. After an argument with her husband, her body was discovered the next morning not far from the dinghy. The boats dinghy had not been used but there were scratch marks on the side.
Wagner said that he and Woods had an argument the night before and when he went to bed Woods wasn’t there.
Walker said the couple had an argument that night; the Captain went to Walkers cabin and asked him to intervene to stop the conflict between the couple. Walker said he didn’t want to get involved.
The Captain later said that the couple had an argument that night. He said Wagner smashed a wine bottle and accused Walker of wanting to be with Wood, and the accusation Walker went to bed. The argument continued, Wagner was described by the Captain as jealous and enraged. The Captain said that he heard a dinghy being untied and then everything fell silent. Wagner hindered reporting Wood as missing for hours and also hindered the search.
Wood’s death was classified as an accident, ‘probable drowning in ocean.’ The coroner found ‘numerous bruises to arms and legs’ that were ‘superficial and probably sustained at the time of drowning’ and wrote ‘No other trauma noted and foul play is not’. She had alcohol in her system, motion-sickness pill and a painkiller. It was believed that Woods died due to slipping whilst trying to get into the dinghy. What led to Woods death remains a mystery.
Captain Davern believed Wagner had something to do with her death. Lana, Wood’s sister said, “I know who killed Natalie”.

But few stories have captivated the public's imagination as much as the mysterious death of Natalie Wood. In our latest episode of "Restless Killers and Mysteries," we dive deep into the perplexing case of this beloved actress whose life was tragically cut short under enigmatic circumstances. Natalie Wood was a household name, known for her roles in iconic films like "Rebel Without a Cause" and "West Side Story." Born Natalia Nikolaevna Zakharenko, she began her career as a child star and transitioned seamlessly into a respected adult actress. Her career was a testament to her versatility and talent, making her a beloved figure in Hollywood. However, behind the glamour and accolades was a woman navigating the highs and lows of fame. Natalie, Robert Wagner, and her co-star Christopher Walken were aboard the yacht Splendor, anchored off Catalina Island. The evening started pleasantly but soon turned tumultuous. Reports of a heated argument between Wagner and Walken, fueled by jealousy and alcohol, set the scene for the night's tragic turn. Natalie was last seen alive by Wagner and the yacht's captain, Dennis Davern. Her body was later found floating in the water, clad in a nightgown, socks, and a down jacket. The initial autopsy ruled her death as accidental drowning, but the presence of alcohol and medication in her system raised questions. The case was reopened in 2011, and in 2012, the cause of death was amended to "drowning and other undetermined factors." This reclassification, along with conflicting witness statements and unresolved issues around bruising on her body, has kept the mystery alive. Theories abound, from accidental drowning to foul play. Wagner remains a person of interest, but no charges have been brought. The ambiguity persists, fed by tabloid headlines and true crime enthusiasts. Hollywood Starlet Natalie Wood
Child actress Natalie Wood landed starring role as the little girl in Miracle on 34th Street. When she was young, her mother took her to a fortune teller as a lark, where the woman told them to fear dark water, because that’s how she was going to die. In 1949, Wood was acting in another movie, and she fell off a rickety bridge into the ocean, breaking her wrist in the process. As a result of this, she formed a huge phobia of water, so much so that she didn’t even like washing her hair.
In 1981, her body was found floating face-down in the Pacific ocean. She was only wearing a nightgown, socks, and a jacket. This appeared to be an accident, or even a suicide. But considering how terrified she was of the water all her life, would she really have chosen this as a way to go?
On the night of her death, Natalie Wood was on a yacht with her husband, Robert Wagner, and her co-star, Christopher Walken. They had all gone out drinking that night, and went back to a yacht. Witnesses in nearby boats said that they could hear an argument coming from the yacht, and a woman screaming for help. A man replied in a mocking tone, “Okay honey, we’ll get you.” At 1:30AM, Wagner called to report Natalie Wood missing. Her body was found a mile away. Strangely, the yacht dinghy was also floating nearby, which indicates that maybe she tries to climb into it to save herself. According to Dennis Davern, the captain of the ship, he heard Robert Wagner smash a wine bottle, and scream at Christopher Walken about flirting with Natalie Wood. The police found the broken glass on the floor, and Wagner lied, saying it was a rough sea that night, and it must have fallen over.

Natalie Wood: A Mysterious Drowning
Natalie Wood, real name: “Natalia Nikolaevna Zakharenko”, was born July 20th, 1938 in San Francisco, California. She had one half sister (older) and one biological sister (younger). Both parents were Russian immigrants and changed their surname to “Gurdin”.
Tumblr media
Starting Young:
Natalie started acting at the young age of four, briefly starring in the 1943 film “Happy Land”. She was not actually credited for this role, as it was only about 15 seconds of screen time. She filmed two movies for director Irving Pichel before her mother signed her to 20th Century Fox and began her major role, the 1947 Christmas classic Miracle on 34th Street (picture below). During her childhood, Natalie is said to have appeared in about 20 films, while still getting an education on whichever movie set she was on.
Tumblr media
Growing Up:
During her teenage years, she began starring in an ABC TV sit com, “The Pride of the Family”. At age sixteen, she starred alongside James Dean and Sal Mineo in the film “Rebel Without a Cause”. About a year after the release of this film, Natalie graduated high school in 1956, the same year she was rumored to have had a relationship with Elvis Presley. She then went on to sign with Warner Bros and filmed with them until about 1960. During her time at Warner Bros, she began dating and married her childhood crush Robert Wagner even against her family’s wishes. They separated in 1961 and finally divorced in 1962, but remarried again in 1972.
Tumblr media
Natalie’s adult career kicked off in 1961 where she starred alongside Warren Beatty in “Splendor in the Grass”. In the same year, she starred as character Maria in the movie adaptation of the musical, “West Side Story”. She continued to star in 6 more films until 1966, where she began a 3 year break from acting.
Tumblr media
Her Mysterious Death:
During Thanksgiving weekend in November 1981, Natalie was aboard her yacht with husband Robert Wagner, co-star and famous actor Christopher Walken, and the boat’s captain Dennis Davern. The actress’ body was found in the morning hours of November 29 off of Catalina Island, where she was dressed in her nightgown and socks with one of the boat’s inflatable dinghy. She was officially identified to police by Dennis Davern. Famous medical examiner Thomas Noguchi noted “superficial bruising” and small abrasions on her body, which he stated was significant with her falling into the water, thus declaring her cause of death an “accidental drowning”.
Tumblr media
Wagner insisted his wife was not suicidal and suggested that she fell into the water trying to untie the dinghy to keep it from making so much noise by hitting the side of the yacht. He did admit that him and his wife had an argument before he realized she had gone missing but denied further allegations. It was also suggested by Noguchi that she was intoxicated and fell into the water on accident and then succumbed to hypothermia.
However, Natalie’s sister Lana claims that these assumptions sounded highly unrealistic and claimed that Natalie had a fear of water and could not swim so she would not try to even try untying the dinghy and getting in. Some claims state that bystanders on different boats reported hearing a woman yelling for help sometime during the night.
Christopher Walken immediately cooperated with the investigation and was cleared as a suspect.
It wasn’t until the year 2011 where Davern publicly admitted that he lied to the police during the initial investigation surrounding Natalie Wood’s death. He claimed that once the other passengers on the boat discovered her missing, he insisted a search for her but Wagner prevented him from doing so by demanding he not turn on the floodlights. He believes that Wagner was responsible for her death.
A 10 page addendum was added to her autopsy report in 2013, and Wagner is a top suspect in the reopening of the investigation as of 2018. He still continues to deny any responsibility.

BACK IN THE NEWS: What happened to Natalie Wood on the night of November 29, 1981?
The next morning, as we all know, she was discovered floating in the waters off Catalina Island. But what happened during the night before she died?
That night, Natalie was aboard the Splendour, the boat she and her husband, actor Robert Wagner, owned. Also on board was actor Christopher Walken and the ship’s captain, Dennis Davern. Wagner and Davern were drunk. None of the three men has talked in detail about the events of that evening.
Until now.
DENNIS DAVERN podcast excerpt: “As soon as we departed Marina Del Rey, Robert Wagner had jealousy written all over him. Tension was building and it was just terrible… All of a sudden Robert picks up a wine bottle and smashed it in the middle of a coffee table. Glass shattered all over everyone. Christopher Walken exited to his stateroom. Natalie went up to her stateroom. I went to the bridge. You could hear the arguing, the screaming. It was torture.”
It’s not Wagner or Walken that’s talking, however. The ship’s captain, Davern, has broken his silence in a new book written with his long time friend, Marti Rulli. "Goodbye Natalie, Goodbye Splendour" is his story, his recollection of that horrible night and the 28 years of silence and guilt that have engulfed his life ever since.
In the interest of full disclosure, before we start, I need to tell you that I first heard about this book through my sister, who lives in the same small South Jersey community as Marti Rulli and has done business with her. But that doesn’t mean every friend of Lori’s gets a shot on this show. You still have to accomplish something, okay?

 NATALIE WOOD (1938 - 1981)
“There are certain stars who are not actors. I don’t want to be that type.”
ONE OF THE MOST CELEBRATED ACTRESSES OF HOLLYWOOD’S GOLD AGE, WHOSE DEATH IS STILL AN UNSOLVED MISTERY.
Her real name was Natalia Nikolaevna Zakharenko. She was born in California, the daughter of Russian immigrant parents. Natalie liked to describe her family as having been either gypsies or landowning aristocrats in Russia. After moving to America her father worked as a day laborer and carpenter.
Natalia’s mother would take her little daughter to the movies as often as she could. Since a very young age Wood was watching Hollywood child stars from her mother's lap. One day, Natalia was noticed by members of a crew during a film shoot in downtown Santa Rosa. She was offered an acting job in a fifteen-second scene in the film Happy Land.
Wood’s mother had an overpowering ambition to make Natalie a star. She soon packed her whole family off to Los Angeles in order to find job opportunities for little Natalie. Seven year old Wood soon got the part in her first real movie - Tomorrow Is Forever. After that, she was signed with 20th Century Fox studio for her first major role in Miracle on 34th Street. After this film, she was counted among the top child stars in Hollywood.
Wood's mother continued to play a significant role in her daughter's early career, coaching her and micromanaging aspects of her career even after Wood acquired agents.
Wood’s career progressed fast. At age 16 she co-starred with James Dean and Sal Mineo in Rebel Without a Cause, first Hollywood movie about American teenagers. In this movie, she could be rebellious and independent - something she wanted for a really long time. Her co-stars remembered, that she was ready to kill to get the part of Judy. After a huge success of Rebel Without a Cause, Wood was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Wood graduated from Van Nuys High School in 1956. She signed with Warner Brothers and was kept busy during the remainder of the decade in many "girlfriend" roles, which she found unsatisfying. After Wood appeared in the box office flop All the Fine Young Cannibals, she lost momentum. Wood's career was in a transition period, having until then consisted of roles as a child or as a teenager.
In 1961 Elia Kazan casted Wood as the female lead in Splendor in the Grass, and her career rebounded. Working with Kazan brought her to the greatest emotional heights of her career. For her performance in Splendor in the Grass, Wood received nominations for the Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, and BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
In 1964, at the age of 25, Wood received her third Academy Award nomination making her the youngest person to score three Oscar nominations.
Despite her huge success on professional level, Wood’s private life was a series of misfortunes. At the age of 19 she married actor Robert Wagner, whom she had had a crush on since she was a child. The marriage was a huge disaster, and the young couple divorced 5 years later. In early 1972, after her divorce from British producer Richard Gregson, Natalie Wood resumed her relationship with Wagner. They remarried on July 16, 1972.
Wood’s death remains a mistery. At the age of 43, during the making of Brainstorm she went on a weekend boat trip to Catalina Island on board Wagner's yacht Splendour. She was there with her husband, Brainstorm co-star Christopher Walken, and Splendour's captain Dennis Davern. She was last seen alive on the evening of November 28, 1981.
At 8 a.m. on November 29 her motionless body was discovered one mile away from the boat. Many of the circumstances of her death are unknown. It was never determined how she entered the water, and the autopsy report revealed that she had bruises on her body and arms. Two witnesses had been on a boat nearby, and they stated that they had heard a woman scream for help during the night. In February 2018, Wood’s husband was named a person of interest in the investigation into her death. He has denied any involvement.
Natalie Wood was buried in Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles. She remains one of the most celebrated and admired actresses of Hollywood’s Gold Age.

Actor Robert Wagner a “person of interest” in the death of his wife, Natalie Wood
Police investigating the mysterious drowning of Hollywood actress, Natalie Wood, in 1981, have announced that her husband at the time, Robert Wagner, is now a person of interest.
“We’ve investigated the case over the last six years, I think he’s more of a person of interest now,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant John Corina.
Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner were married in 1972. Wood died on the 29th of November, 1981, just off of Catalina Island in California. She and Wagner had been sailing on their yacht, Splendor, when disaster struck and Wood supposedly accidentally drowned. Also on board was Christopher Walken and the boat’s captain, Dennis Davern.
They were all drinking heavily on the yacht that night and at 1:30AM, Wagner called authorities to say that Wood was missing from the yacht. Her body was found floating face down some 200 metres from the shore.
In 2011, the case was reopened. According to Wood’s autopsy report, there were numerous bruises all over her body and face. “She looked like a victim of an assault,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Detective Ralph Hernandez.

Natalie Wood was one of the biggest Hollywood stars up until her untimely death on November 29, 1981. From an early age, Natalie had a deep fear of dark water and had reoccurring nightmares of drowning. Even a fortune teller had prophesied that she would die of drowning. Two days before her passing, she and her husband, actor Robert Wagner, were invited by her co-star Christopher Walken to go onto his yacht. Natalie was said to be infatuated by Christopher, sparking much jealousy from her husband. For the majority of the weekend, everyone drank heavily, and an argument broke out between Natalie and Robert at some point. Although, after dinner, they seemingly made up. Then, Christopher and Robert got into a heated political debate. Natalie, not wanting to get involved, eventually got up and left. After about an hour, her husband went back to their room to wish her a goodnight, but Natalie was nowhere to be found. Only six hours later, her body was discovered floating face-down in the Pacific Ocean, only a mile away from the yacht, wearing only a jacket, nightgown, and socks. There was a cut on her cheek as well as bruises on her body. An inflatable dinghy was also found washed up on the rocks. There were scratch marks on it, suggesting that Natalie tried to climb in as it floated away from the yacht. Her death was ruled accidental, as it was believed she likely fell into the water after drinking so much. However, others had their doubts. Witnesses that were aboard another boat nearby had heard a woman screaming for help, but assumed it was associated with the party on the yacht. The case was reopened in 2011 when the captain of the boat, Dennis Davern, stepped forward to point the finger at her husband. He stated that he had heard Robert and Natalie arguing, and also heard sounds of the dinghy being untied.
The LA coroners changed Natalie’s cause of death from ‘’accidental drowning’’ to ‘’drowning and other undetermined factors’’. Her husband denies Dennis’ claims that he was, in any way, involved in Natalie Wood’s mysterious drowning.

Jill St. John and Lana Wood have been involved in a decades-long feud that began during the filming of this movie, throughout the spring of 1971, when both women were dating Sean Connery at the same time.
In February 1982, less than three months after the mysterious drowning of Lana's sister Natalie Wood, St. John began a relationship with Robert Wagner, Lana's brother-in-law, and eventually married him.
At a photo shoot of former Bond Girls in September 1999 for "Vanity Fair" magazine, an altercation occurred between St. John and Wood when photographer Annie Leibovitz asked for a picture of them together. Reportedly, St. John was so adamantly opposed to the idea that it reduced Wood to tears. St. John's publicist, however, said it was he who vetoed the photo because Wagner would prefer his present wife not be shot with his former sister-in-law.
In February 2016, Wood crashed an event honoring St. John in Palm Springs and publicly confronted Wagner in front of cameramen over Natalie's death. (The case has been reopened since November 2011, initiated by boat captain Dennis Davern's admission that he originally lied to police.) Following the confrontation, Wood claimed she received a threatening phone call from an anonymous woman who told her to "lay off" Wagner "or something serious could happen to you." She reported the threat to authorities. "My first instinct was it might be Jill, trying to scare me off, and protect him. But I'd recognize Jill's voice. It wasn't her," Wood told RadarOnline in July 2016.
Wagner was officially named a Person of Interest in Natalie Wood's death in February 2018. St. John reportedly slammed the door in LACSD detectives' faces during their attempts to question Wagner at the home she shares with him in Colorado. On July 25, 2018, Lana Wood appeared on Megyn Kelly Today(2017) and when asked by Kelly if she thinks Wagner "murdered" her sister, Lana said, "Yes.”
