On your right, you witness the debut cigar and initial line blended under Master Cigar Maker Nicholas Melillo for Foundation Cigars. The El GĂŒegĂŒense (the wise man). A true Nicaraguan puro, each bale of tobacco that goes into this cigar is hand selected by Melillo with the filler leaves coming from a special vintage crop from years 2011 and 2012. On your left, the Wise Man Maduro is a rich blend of specially selected Nicaraguan Fillers and carefully sourced aged San Andres Capa. The blend encompasses bold flavours of black pepper, dark roast espresso, and cacao. Medium plus in body and strength rounded out with a nutty finish. Both of these incredible premium Nicaraguan creations are available inside all three of our custom built was-in humidors. If youâve tried one, you know. If you have not, youâre missing out. Barcelona are losing the ideology that makes them unique
Alejandro Moreno explains what went wrong for La Liga favourites Barcelona in their season opening defeat at Athletic Bilbao.
Twenty-six goals, six red cards, innumerable shots and headers off the woodwork, all three promoted clubs scoring points, none of them defeated and Real Madrid ahead of Barcelona in La Liga for the first time in several hundred days. Oh, and loads of VAR. La Liga is back: bursting with joie de vivre, face bathed in a mischievous smile and strutting around arrogantly after a helluva party at the weekend.
But even after that wildest of parties, we need to do what generations of carousers have found themselves involved in when the return of the work week brings inquests, bemusement and nagging worries. We need to talk about what happened on Friday night, and not just because the champions lost calamitously to an Athletic Club who were brutally intense and incessantly hard-working and who produced what Iâm sure will still be a contender for goal of the season come May.
No.
Postmatch at San Mames, Gerard Pique took on the interview duties and really engaged with the subject of why and how Barcelona lost the first La Liga match of a season for the first time in 11 years. Yet Iâm going to have to disagree with a fundamental point he made. Pique spoke well and pointed out that the bruising pressure, the cauldron atmosphere and the intensity of desire to topple champions were precisely what he and the gang whoâve won eight of the past 11 La Liga titles expected to experience.
âWe werenât ourselves. They were better than us physically.â No problem there. Apt summary. He also noted, âItâs better to go through this kind of experience now and learn from it than do so at the end of the season.â Fair enough.
There was a good expression in there that â if you didnât see the 1-0 defeat, carved out via Aritz Adurizâs moment of gymnastic brilliance, which combined the aerial elegance of trapeze artists, the chutzpah of a David vs. Goliath and the thunderous punching power of a young Mike Tyson â will help you envisage the pattern of the 90 minutes. Itâll also be a nice phrase for you to store away and impress your friends with.
Pique stated that if Barcelona werenât on their game, if they were playing, thinking and reacting below par, then any other club in La Liga could âpintar la cara.â It literally means âpaint our face.â The purpose is to suggest that if you drop your level even to a minuscule degree, another team can humiliate you, roll all over you, take you apart.
â When is the Champions League group-stage draw? â ESPN La Liga fantasy: Sign up now!
Even the expression itself, thought of literally, helps tell Piqueâs story well. Youâve been at parties when someone is a little inebriated, crashes on a couch and has a moustache painted on them with permanent marker, right? âPintar la cara:â to humiliate the dopey or the dozy by painting their face. Itâs universal.
In Piqueâs case, he specified who the dope was ⊠in so many words. The object of his ire was Ousmane Dembele, whoâs now out for five weeks with a hamstring strain.
When Athletic take their throw on Barcelonaâs left side, Jordi Alba just allows Raul Garcia to fake him out and loses a third of a metre on the wily, old street fighter, and Garcia receives the ball to play a one-two with Ander Capa, who launched the ball at him in the first place. Capa scampers past Dembele â irresistible force and unmoving object. And when Capa crosses exquisitely on the run, thereâs Aduriz, who has been gifted a metre and a half too much space by Nelson Semedo.
The 38-year-old Basque legend, whose name was chanted incessantly by the vast ranks of San Mames faithful from the instant he came on the pitch 90 seconds earlier, levitates himself transcendentally and lashes out his right foot. The ball flies diagonally back across the penalty box into the far corner of Marc-Andre ter Stegenâs goal.
Sheer, sublime brilliance. Heckuva story too.
However, Pique correctly pinpointed that when Alba raced to try to smother Raul Garciaâs flick-on, it left Dembele with increased responsibility. His bovine, âOh dear, that guyâs running past meâ reaction was inadequate, but thatâs not the issue. Pique, speaking like a captain, serious about the issue and, like all true competitors, willing to concede that his team had been bested, pointed out that âdetails are the difference between winning and losing, and one detail, the one-two from the throw-in in the 88th minute ⊠and thatâs it, we go home beaten.â
Well, I beg to differ. Dembele failed. It was crucial in the goal. Thatâs all fine. But the cause of the goal came from a really bad use of possession, the thing that Barcelona were once â indeed, remain â famous for.
Have Barcelona betrayed their ideals on possession?
Let me explain.
At 0-0 and with two minutes, 13 seconds of normal time left, Ter Stegen has the ball at his feet. Thereâs an organised but not suffocating Athletic press. A pass to Clement Lenglet is shut off by Aduriz, whoâll gradually pull off that man and trot toward the German keeper. The pass down the middle to Ivan Rakitic â or even Rafinha, who moves back to add options â is effectively closed off by Dani Garcia and Oihan Sancet, Athleticâs 19-year-old debutant from whom I expect terrific things.
But Ter Stegen has both Pique and Semedo available to his right. Theyâre not properly closed down. Itâs the obvious move to build from the back through them and either keep possession or build a late attack.
Instead he unloads a long, raking ball to a relatively well-marked Alba high and wide on the left touchline. The effort is lackadaisical, the kind of attention to detail you might see during the warm-up and, even then, receive ribbing from your teammates about. The ball soars over Albaâs head and out for the very throw-in that will result in the winning goal, 28 seconds after Ter Stegen needlessly gifts away possession.
They have the ball, they arenât under great pressure, the match is almost over, a point is in hand ⊠and itâs all tossed away with the nonchalant âIâve got more of theseâ lack of grief when a millionaire drops a âŹ100 note on the pavement.
So if Dembele needed a clip round the ear from Pique, then why didnât the German? If Ter Stegen takes the correct, obvious, intelligent option with his pass, the odds of Barcelona getting out of San Mames with a draw â perhaps even a smash-and-grab 1-0 win â go up hugely. His culpability is central, more so than Dembeleâs.
But this column is neither me picking an argument with Pique for the sake of it nor me trying to be overly critical of Ter Stegen, who regularly pulls Barca out of the muck and is, without question, one of the most gifted keepers in the world. Heâs also one of their grittiest competitors.
Not only did his mixture of bemusing decision-making and sloppy technique cost defeat, but also it was symbolic, I thought, in two ways. One, instead of maintaining possession, he kicked it away at a time when your brain needs to be making percentage decisions. That Barcelonaâs European campaign came to a spectacularly crashing end â what seems like no more than a week or two ago â because of inattention at a set piece doesnât seem to have registered with this squad.
Ter Stegen gifted Athletic that dead-ball situation, and just like at Anfield, when Trent Alexander-Arnold fed Divock Origi from that âfind the dopeâ corner kick, Barcelonaâs key men all dropped their concentration for a second. Alba, Dembele and Semedo were all found wanting â maybe not by much individually but cumulatively enough for Athletic to snatch three points.
How long ago was it that possession was king at Barca? Not âkingâ in the sense of lip service and paying homage to the idea without actually enforcing it, but truly âking,â as in never giving it away cheaply. A long time.
Secondly, Ter Stegenâs decision to play high-risk, unnecessarily showy football with 132 seconds of normal time remaining came when Ernesto Valverde had already judged that Sergio Busquets â ordinarily the emperor of âtake the ball, pass the ballâ (to coin a Pep Guardiola phrase) â should be dropped because he has become prone in recent months to getting ruffled under pressure and giving the ball away.
Huge changes donât always come explosively. In fact, usually they inch ahead incrementally. Friday felt measurable.
But itâs Week 1. Itâs early to judge a squad with new signings and one that was cruelly exposed to this torrid test by a board of directors who thought it was a good idea to pack Valverdeâs squad off to the United States in the final 10 days before La Liga kicked off. Madness.
But Iâd suggest that Barcelona arenât just losing concentration on the pitch. Theyâre insidiously losing their respect for possession of the ball and the ideology behind it.

(ts/tr)
Perkiraan Pemain : Athletic Bilbao (4-2-3-1): Iago Herrerin; Yuri, Yeray Alvarez, Inigo Martinez, Ander Capa; Dani Garcia, Unai Lopez; Inigo Cordoba, Raul Garcia, Iker Muniain; Inaki Williams.
Barcelona (4-3-3): Marc Andre ter Stegen; Nelson Semedo, Gerard Pique, Clement Lenglet, Jordi Alba; Frenkie de Jong, Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic; Ousmane Dembele, Luis Suarez, Antoine Griezmann.

La Liga 2018/19 Tactical Analysis: Barcelona vs Athletic Bilbao

La Liga 2018/19 Tactical Analysis: Barcelona vs Athletic Bilbao
bestfreebettingtips.com @chapulana
A trip to San Mames is never easy, and Ernesto Valverde probably knows this best. The ex-coach of the Basques returned to his former love with Barcelona and was held to a draw by an inspiring performance of Athletic Bilbao in front of their fans. The Catalans just couldnât find a cure for the compact defence the hosts deployed which resulted in no goals on the night.
Still, when your man of the match sits in-between the sticks, it is usually telling enough of what kind of a game youâve had. Some Marc-Andre ter Stegen heroics and a lack of sharper finishing could imply that this was indeed a point gained rather than two lost for Barcelona.
This tactical analysis will use statistics to dissect the thriller to be that turned into a sleeper, and to determine just what transpired that lead to both teams sharing the spoils in Bilbao.
Lineups
Barcelona (4-3-3)
Starting XI: Ter Stegen â Sergi, Pique, Lenglet, Semedo â RakitiÄ, Busquets, Vidal â Messi, Suarez, Coutinho
Bench: Iñaki Peña, Murillo, Vermaelen, Aleña, Boateng, Malcom, Dembele
Coach: Ernesto Valverde
Athletic Bilbao (4-2-3-1)
Starting XI: HerrerĂn â De Marcos, Yeray, MartĂnez, Balenziaga â Beñat, Dani GarcĂa â Susaeta, RaĂșl GarcĂa, Yuri â Williams
Bench: SimĂłn, NĂșñez, Ibai, CĂłrdoba, San JosĂ©, Muniain, Kodro
Coach: Gaizka Garitano
Barcelonaâs setup
Ernesto Valverdeâs choice of personnel was probably the most important tactical issue he faced against Athletic Bilbao. The Ant decided to field a mixed squad, which was not entirely by choice, and it mostly backfired. The biggest omissions were Jordi Alba, whose fifth yellow card in the league brought a suspension, and Arthur Melo, who suffered a three-to-four weeks long injury after the Clasico at the Camp Nou.
As if two of his key pieces missing were not enough, he decided to field a clearly unfit Lionel Messi which was extremely risky considering the venue and the aggressive opponents. In the end, the price he paid was evident in the scoreline, and luckily for him, was not physical.
Nelson Semedo deputized for Alba at left-back and Arturo Vidal started in midfield alongside Sergio Busquets and Ivan RakitiÄ. Philippe Coutinho got the nod in front of Ousmane Dembele as the Frenchman is yet to reach full game readiness coming back from a short injury.
The team operated in a 4-3-3 system throughout the game.
Athletic Bilbaoâs setup
Gaizka Garitano knows how Ernesto Valverde felt prior to the game, and he might have had it even worse than his counterpart. Five injuries and a suspension ridden Athletic Bilbao had to welcome the league leaders at San Mames, which meant that Garitano would have a puzzle to solve even before setting foot on his own pitch.
Having served his penalty after getting a red card in the game against Real Betis, Oscar de Marcos returned at right-back. On the other side Ander Capa had to sit the game out due to his yellow card suspension. The centre-back pairing was luckily untouched, and so were the important pieces like Dani Garcia and Inaki Williams higher up the pitch.
In the middle of the park, however, Garitano decided to shuffle the cards a bit. Benat was benched as San Jose took his place next to Garcia, and Raul Garcia played just behind their pacey forward and alongside Yuri Berchice and Markel Susaeta on his left and right side respectively.
The Basques used a 4-2-3-1 formation, which was not tampered with at any point during the game.
The hosts strike first
Even though the title of the paragraph might be a bit misleading considering that no goals were scored on the night, Athletic Bilbao was the first team to really threaten their opposition. In fact, you could say that they were the only really threatening team on the pitch at San Mames.
Right from the off they took the game straight to Barcelona, didnât let them play the way they wanted to and imposed themselves as the more dominant side of the two. This was done by completely closing the Catalansâ passing channels to nullify their forwardsâ impact, and crucially, by transitioning between defence and attack with speed and accuracy.
Athletic Bilbao pressed from the first minute, blocking all passing channels for Barcelona with acute man-marking and aggression.
The image above is the perfect depiction of the first 45 minutes played in Bilbao. Barcelona struggling to find the right passes as they had Athletic in their faces at all times. Notice how the only way forward is through a long ball or by switching sides, as all other options are basically ruled out by great man-marking.
Another thing to be noticed is Sergio Busquetsâ positioning. The Octopus of Badia would drop to the lavolpiana position between the centre-backs to bring more stability to the defence, and let the full-backs go further up the pitch to give some width to their attack.
Sergio Busquets assumes the famous lavolpiana role, dropping between the centre-backs, providing some defensive back up and enabling the full-backs to provide width for a team that lacked a real winger in the lineup.
Even though this was crucial due to Barcelona not having any natural wingers on the pitch, it did leave them vulnerable when Bilbao achieved numerical superiority and overloaded the midfield with ease.
Notice in the example below how disjointed the Catalansâ trident in the middle is. Itâs extremely difficult for them to make any progressive passes or even create anything amongst themselves.
Bilbao achieved numerical superiority in midfield which made it more difficult for Barcelona to create and send progressive passes.
This had two direct results. The first was the obvious lack of attacking effectiveness that Barcelona got from their midfield, and the second was the impact it had on the front three. With none of the midfielders being able to create any palpable results and all of them missing that creative spark, it was up to Lionel Messi to once again drop deeper and orchestrate the game himself.
Lionel Messi had to constantly drop deeper to midfield in order to be the creative spark moving forward.
This did not happen on just a couple of occasions either. Messi was constantly in the midfield, trying to send the ball through the lines and to find Suarez or Coutinho. In the end he had a decent connection with Nelson Semedo on the left, but Jordi Albaâs absence was a glaring one to say the least.
Barcelonaâs left side was still perhaps the more proactive of the two offensively, but defensively it struggled a lot. Athletic knew which flank to target as Ernesto Valverde opted to choose Semedo as Albaâs replacement.
As skillful as the Portuguese international is, the left is still not his natural position, and as much as he could cover it going forward, he was having trouble being as effective defending.
The hosts clearly favored the right flank, mostly focusing their attacks there.
The key in that first half was quickly transitioning from defence to attack and catching Barcelona off guard. The Catalans misplaced a total of 84 passes, and Bilbao were always resolute and ready to pounce, racking up 41 interceptions on the night. Once they had disrupted Barcaâs build-up, they would swiftly switch sides, and send balls into the box.
That was mostly done through crosses. Both the number of those crosses and the clear side preference can be seen in the images below. Only one came from the left while all the others were sent from the right. Seeing how they were also skillful in the air, winning 21 offensive aerials, the plan was great.
Most of their positional plays were also created through the right flank.
The number of crosses, the side preference and the players who made the most throughout the game.
At least it would have been had it not been for ter Stegen who made five saves on the night. Not only that, the German Wall has saved 27 of the last 31 shots on target he has faced in La Liga, and only conceded four goals in total in that period of time. Heâs without doubt one of the worldâs best.
Second half brings some changes
Maybe it was something Ernesto Valverde said in the locker room or it was Athletic running out of gas, but Barcelona came out guns blazing in the second half. More intent and determination was seen in their play as the build-up was more fluid and faster, and the grip around Bilbao was getting tighter every minute.
It was getting tighter and more difficult to breathe for the Basques as Barcelona pinned them down in their own backyard and minimalised the space in which they could operate. But Athletic was fine with that. After all, that is usually one of their game plans anyway.
In the second half, Athletic Bilbao turtled up and decided to rely on counters. Their compact block worked as Barcelona failed to cause any real threats to the hosts.
Garitano decided to sit back and soak up all the pressure, deploying a solid compact block consisting out of two banks of four and only two men close to the middle of the pitch. This low-to-medium block meant that Athletic was ready to settle for a draw or patiently wait for their chances in the form of counter-attacks.
Their plan was, once again, successful as Barcelona failed to make any progress at all and failed to put the man between the sticks in any real danger pretty much throughout the whole match. Out of three counters that were created as a result of their patience, one ended with a shot but once again, they were missing that end product to seal the deal.
Recurring themes
Barcelona seem a bit more sloppy in possession than usual, as of late. The high number of lost balls in midfield is not really a good sign for the Catalans as their whole game plan is built upon total possession domination. They may have achieved that against Athletic but most of the time, that possession led nowhere.
The hosts deployed a great block to nullify Blaugranaâs approach but the lack of creativity killed all of their chances. This was down to the team selection as much as a couple of Ernesto Valverdeâs crucial mistakes.
The first and the biggest one lay in the midfield trio. Sergio Busquets, Ivan RakitiÄ and Arturo Vidal are all individually great players but they donât work as a trident. The precise reason is the lack of a real offensive outlet. In the following example, Valverde instructs Busquets to sit deep and Vidal to cover for Roberto while RakitiÄ gets to venture a bit higher up the pitch.
Ivan RakitiÄ was the midfielder tasked with playing furthest up the pitch.
Even though he made a couple of great runs, he failed to send accurate passes to set his teammates up for finishing touches. But he was not the only one doing it. Luis Suarez seemed completely out of sync with the rest of the squad, and Philippe Coutinho failed to have any real noticeable impact on the game.
The Brazilian did start to pick up the pace as we approached the latter stages but was still eventually replaced by Ousmane Dembele for the final 15 minutes at San Mames. The Frenchman, however, did not have enough time to shift the tide in Barcelonaâs favour.
Conclusion
It was a rather disappointing performance from Barcelona who have failed to score for the first time in 37Â La Liga games. Still, it could be argued that this is a point gained rather than two lost, considering that Athletic Bilbao were the more proactive team on the pitch.
Once again it was down to Marc-Andre ter Stegen to save them but he was helped by Clement Lenglet and Gerard Pique respectively. Moving forward, Barcelona seemed out of ideas. An unfit Messi was not up to much on the day, but the fact that he still outperformed most of the Catalansâ starters is telling enough.
February is traditionally the worst month for Blaugrana who always struggle to find their footing and are prone to falling off at this stage of the season. Now it is up to Ernesto Valverde to get his troops back in order and ready to perform again. The Champions League is just around the corner, not to mention that they still have two Clasicos to play â one in La Liga and the other in Copa del Rey.
A whole week free will definitely do them good because they better have their batteries fully charged for the spectacle that is soon to come. We had better sit tight, because the ride is getting crazier by the minute.
