Elon Musk is navigating Brazil’s X ban — and flirting with its far right

X briefly returned for Brazilian users earlier this week, part of a months-long power play.

For more than two weeks, Brazilians have been without access to X. Brazil’s Supreme Court blocked the platform after Elon Musk failed to comply with court rulings. As X evades the ban and Musk’s companies work slowly toward a resolution, the real concern for many isn’t just the absence of social media. It’s Musk’s power play over the government as he backs Brazil’s far right.

X was banned on August 30th after months of back-and-forth between Musk and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. The conflict began in April when Musk publicized government requests for information and then removed all restrictions imposed on X profiles by Brazilian court orders. Moraes responded by including Musk in an investigation over organized political disinformation and subpoenaing X’s Brazilian legal representative. Musk abruptly shuttered its local operations, leading Moraes to ban it for violating local laws.

Since then, negotiations between both sides have proceeded gradually. The Supreme Court announced a transfer of R$ 18.3 million from X and Starlink to the national treasury, indirectly paying a fine for not removing content. Moraes subsequently ordered the unblocking of both companies’ bank accounts. Musk has reportedly met with Vanessa Souza, a Brazilian specialist in cyber law, and he’s appointed a pair of attorneys to represent X in Brazil — leading Moraes to ask if X has reopened operations, which could eventually clear the way for a lifted ban.

But Musk’s public response has largely been confrontational. In the past couple of weeks, he has criticized the Brazilian Supreme Court’s decision as well as the president, claiming the ban violates free speech and sets a dangerous precedent. He’s rallied public support, primarily from far-right influencers and politicians.

And this week, some Brazilians briefly got access to X again. According to the Brazilian Association of Internet and Telecommunications Providers (ABRINT), X made a “significant” update early on September 18th, changing its design to use IP addresses linked to Cloudflare and routing around service providers’ blocks. ABRINT said the update put providers in a “delicate situation” while regulators attempted to get it blocked again. X officially called the ban “inadvertent and temporary,” but Moraes levied extra fines against it for what he dubbed “willful, illegal and persistent” evasion, citing a Musk tweet that seemed to celebrate the move.

Musk’s defiance is part of a long flirtation with Brazil’s currently out-of-power far right. “He is not just an influencer of the far right, he is an activist,” says Camila Rocha, a researcher at the Brazilian Center of Analysis and Planning (CEBRAP) and a political scientist. “The collaboration, the harmony between what is happening in Brazil and what is on the networks, is huge.” Whatever happens next in the X–Brazil saga, Musk could claim it’s a win.

Born and raised in Center Hill, Adriana never knew much about her mother who passed away when she was only a few years old. Instead, she was raised solely by her father, Davi. A lot of her childhood memories involve or overlap with the Garcia family in one way another as they, along with the reapers, often extended help to Davi whenever they could.

Over the years, Adri noticed that her father was prone to depressive moods. He wouldn't eat or sleep for days at a time and he was listless, never leaving his bedroom unless encouraged or forced. Davi struggled to hold down jobs and Adri stepped up where she could, from waiting tables to doing all of the Center Hill girls' hair and make up for a small fee or trade. During these years she learned how to be tactile and resourceful, becoming a jack of all trades. Her initial goal was to go to beauty school but the pull of responsibility kept her in Center Hill to look after her father.

After several bad falls, lapses in memory and depressive mood swings, Adri finally convinced her father to seek some form of treatment. Even though she was drowning in the medical bills, eventually Davi received a diagnosis for Huntington's disease. The progressive illness left them with limited options for treatment but a mountain of debt that Adri had to face. She turned to the reapers, knowing she was far from a hardened criminal but could offer her skills in other ways. She was a good watcher or even get away driver if needed. During these years, she gravitated closer to Cruz Garcia who was going above and beyond to help with her father's medical bills. Despite knowing the man he was, Adri fell in love with him anyway and despite the threat of jail looming over their heads, their relationship was founded on trust and respect.

Adri only ever wondered about "getting out" when she discovered she was pregnant. Even though the reapers wouldn't miss much of Adri's involvement, the reality remained that Cruz could never leave. All she could ask of him was to keep his head down to the best of his ability but he was sentenced to three years in jail before their baby girl was even born.

Trying to power on, Adri continued to take care of her father and his worsening illness, as well as little Larissa when she arrived. Adri finally became slightly more selfish while Cruz was in jail. She realized a lot of her life had been lived for others, and she borrowed money from the reapers to attend classes in massage therapy, lying that it was for her father's medical bills. On a whim she applied for a job opening at The Hills Spa, but when she was accepted for an interview the plans began to roll into motion.

No longer wanting to wait for Cruz or a better life, Adri decided to make it happen herself. She quietly started working at the spa without telling a soul, tucking money away until a month ago she had a deposit for a Downtown apartment. She slipped away from Center Hill without letting anybody know where she had gone and with no formal request to leave the reapers either. Adri moved with her father and daughter downtown and promptly stopped all contact with Cruz. While she knows she won't stay hidden for long, Adri is confident that her actions have spoken loud enough. Even if Cruz and her see one another again, they both have made their choices.

How Brazil’s ‘car wash’ anti-corruption crusader fell from grace

Sergio Moro was once one of Brazil’s most popular public figures. As the face of a pan-Latin American corruption crackdown, the former judge was revered by the country’s rightwing for confronting a venal political system plagued by a culture of impunity.

But since the investigation’s peak more than six years ago, Moro’s star has fallen precipitously, his standing battered by the shifting political landscape, revelations of misconduct and a series of ill-judged decisions.

The man once depicted at rightwing rallies as a barrel-chested superman and seen as a presidential contender now cuts an increasingly isolated figure, with few political allies. In the coming weeks, he faces the potential loss of his Senate seat for alleged campaign financing abuses as well as a Supreme Court investigation into his conduct during the Lava Jato, or car wash, probe.

A conviction in the latter case could bar him from running for office, analysts say, marking an abrupt end to the political career of a man who as a federal judge in 2017 oversaw the conviction and almost two-year incarceration of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the leftwing leader who returned to the presidency for a third term last year.

“It is important to understand that this is not just about Lula or a politician from one party or the other — almost all politicians are against Moro,” said Camila Rocha de Oliveira, a political scientist at the Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning. “He is also isolated in the legal community, among the courts, so he is in a very bad position.”
