Ryrie Bar, Haymarket.
Historic Scotland describe this bar as  s “ 2-storey Baronial public house; main block with panelled Scottish Renaissance entrance and ground floor windows, latter with Art Nouveau stained glass.”
Kirkwood's map of 1817 shows the earlier building on this site as the Haymarket Weigh House. In 1830 David Lawrie occupied this building, otherwise known as ‘The Hay Weights’ as an Innkeeper. A few years later Henry Cochrane is listed as a Spirit Dealer at the same address. In 1842 the Edinburgh Glasgow Railway is completed and terminated behind the building. It is shown on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map as 'The Railway Inn' and occupied the whole of the current site.
Alexander Ryrie (Snr) was born in Edinburgh circa 1807, married Henrietta Reid and was father to ten children. He appears in an 1842 Street Directory as a Gardener based in Dalry Lane, alongside possibly his mother, Mrs Ryrie. In various documents he is listed as a Market Gardener, and by the 1861 census he is occupying 11 acres of land.
The next year, 1862, he took on the Railway Inn, and the older western part of the building is rebuilt. Sadly he died in 1865 leaving his wife as the licensee. Henrietta died two years later in 1867 and as her daughter Jane was 21, she obtained the license for the premises. Jane married in 1868 and in the 1871 census her sister Margaret is shown as the head of the family for what has now been renamed The Haymarket Inn.
The main part of the building was rebuilt in 1868 with maps showing it as rectangular with a bay window in the east of the north elevation. It is possible that this remained a private house for the family until it’s remodelling in 1906. Alexander Ryrie (Jnr) was born in 1850 and by the 1881 census he is listed as the Head of the family and as Publican of The Haymarket Inn.
Tumblr media
The above undated photograph from what is believe to b ecirca 1880′s, showing two gentlemen, one of which is likely to be Alex Ryrie. The other is possibly his brother Henry. Alexander remains the licensee of The Haymarket Inn until the end of 1905, when he dies. By this time he is has whisky in bond at Leith. Unfortunately he does not appear to have seen the building remodelled to what we now know as Ryrie’s.
In 1906 the two parts of the building were linked as private and public bars of one property and the ground floor and interior rebuilt. The client for the 1906 work was Messrs Ryrie & Company, whisky merchants.
The architect for the 1906 refit, Robert McFarlane Cameron, was responsible for a number of fine pub interiors in Edinburgh, including The Guildford Arms, also part of the D M Stewart Ltd group. His practice was medium sized and very varied and ranged from churches and schools at one end to public houses and premises for the licensed trade at the other. He served as a bailie and magistrate of the city and was considered to be 'a firm friend of the Trade' and as such secured a number of commissions for re-fitting pubs. These became examples of what is now known as People’s Palaces.
George Morrison, a director of the nearby New Edinburgh Brewery at Slateford, owned by Thomas & James Bernard Ltd, became tenant. His widow acquired the heritable interest in the property and then her executry sold the public house to the Brewery. In turn, Scottish Brewers Ltd acquired Thomas & James Bernard Ltd in 1960. In the 1980s the large Ryrie’s and W M Younger’s Ales signs were placed on the gable ends of the property.
Further minor interior alterations in 1992 improved access around the bar, but left the majority of the original bar unchanged. Ownership of the property passed between large national Pubcos before being purchased by the Edinburgh family run pub company D M Stewart Ltd, which owns and operates some of the cities finest Victorian and Edwardian pubs.
In 2022, 160 years after the Ryrie family first began operating from the building, it reopened after a thorough restoration was completed, taking the exterior paintwork, which was black and then blue, back to it’s original state.

Tree-dwelling crustaceans, arboreal salamanders, biodiversity in fern mats and epiphyte communities in the canopies of redwood forests:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aneides vagrans - the “wandering salamander” - a species endemic only to Vancouver Island and the redwoods forests of coastal northern California. It can be found living up to 100 meters off the ground in the canopy, where it can spend its entire life residing in epiphytic fern mats and under bark.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photos via Save the Redwoods League and STEM Humboldt.
Excerpt:
Of 27 redwoods sampled along the coast of Del Norte and Humboldt Counties, California, 13 had fern mats of this species which collectively weighed more than 100 kilograms, while one had fern mats weighing as much as 742 kilograms (Sillett and Bailey 2003). Other ferns that grow as epiphytes on Redwood include the Licorice Fern (Polypodium glycyrrhiza), Sword Fern (Polystichum munitum) and Lady Fern (Athyrium filix-femina) (Sillett and Van Pelt 2000; Sillett and Bailey 2003). [...]
Sillet and Van Pelt (2000) studied a single old-growth redwood tree in Redwoods National Park and found that its crown had "148 resprouted trunks arising from the main trunk, other trunks, or branches." Five of the resprouted trunks had a basal diameter of over one meter, and the largest resprouted trunk was over 40 meters tall. These researchers concluded that the crown of this redwood could itself be considered a forest. [...] At the Bolinas Lagoon Preserve, 50 kilometers north of San Francisco, over a hundred Great White Egrets (Egretta alba), Snowy Egrets (Egretta thula) and Great Blue Herons (Ardea herodias) nest high in the tops of the redwood trees of Picher Canyon. [...] Williams & Sillet (2007) sampled the canopies of nine large redwood trees and found a total of 282 plant species growing there, including "183 lichens, 50 bryophytes and 49 vascular plants. [...] The epiphytes growing in redwood canopies produce food and microhabitats for many species of animals, including beatles, crickets, earthworms, millipedes, mollusks, arthropods and amphibians [...].
Redwood trees are so immense that large plants (i.e. other species of trees as well as shrubs) grow on them as epiphytes. The following species of trees and shrubs have been found as epiphytes on Coast Redwood:
Tanbark Oak (Lithocarpus densiflorus) / California Bay (Umbellularia californica) / Cascara (Rhamnus purshiana) / Sitka Spruce (Picea sitchensis) / Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) / Western Hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) / Huckleberry (Vaccinium spp.) / Salal (Gaultheria shallon) / Elderberry (Sambucus callicarpa) Gooseberry (Ribes spp.)
References: Sillett and Van Pelt (2000); Sillett and Baily (2003). One California Bay found in the canopy of an old-growth redwood in Redwood National Park is the highest recorded epiphytic tree in the world, growing out of a knothole in the redwood located 98.3 meters above the ground (Sillett and Van Pelt 2000).

A fern mat in a redwood canopy. Photo by Stephen Sillett.
Excerpt from “Redwood Forest Canopies: Insights from 15 Years of Tree Climbing,” by Stephen C. Sillett, Chair in Redwood Forest Ecology at Humboldt State:
The pace of research on Sequoia sempervirens forests increased dramatically in 1996 with initiation of scientific tree climbing at Humboldt State University. Direct measurements of tree structures and epiphytes have revealed an arboreal ecosystem that was previously under-appreciated, because upper canopies of tall forests are scarcely visible from the ground. As they age, and in response to damage from wind and falling neighbors, redwood trees develop highly individualized crowns consisting of reiterated trunks arising from the main trunk, other trunks, and limbs. Over many years, these woody components of a crown interact, sometimes abrading each other and fusing such that living cambium produces sapwood that bridges regions of the crown hydraulically. Fusions, old limbs, and crotches between reiterated trunks provide ideal platforms for accumulation of epiphytes and debris.
In redwood rain forests of Humboldt and Del Norte Counties, the fern Polypodium scouleriforms sprawling mats overlying arboreal soils up to 1 meter deep on these substrates. The set of fern mats in an old crown can exceed 800 kilograms dry mass and hold over 8000 liters of water. Soils beneath ferns and decaying wood inside trunks and limbs store 25 to 53 thousand liters of water per hectare, sustaining desiccation‐sensitive organisms high above the ground throughout the year.
The lungless salamander, Aneides vagrans -- the only amphibian denizen of redwood forest canopies -- resides in cavities within fern mats and decaying wood and feeds on a rich invertebrate community that includes aquatic crustaceans known as harpacticoid copepods.
In addition to P. scouleri, redwood forest canopies are home to at least 265 epiphyte species (186 lichens, 26 mosses, 19 liverworts, 15 angiosperms, 5 ferns, 4 conifers), including a species new to science, the lichen Calicium sequoiae, Williams & Tibell.

WAIT
i might be reaching for straws here
BUT
its like a thing for nick and disney (and other channels, probably) to kind of recycle actors right?? like after debby ryan was baily on SLOD, she was jessie on jessie. cameron boyce went from jessie to gamers guide. bradley steven perry and jake short went from good luck charlie and ant farm to mighty med. ashley tisdale went from SLOZAC to phineas and ferb. on nick, drake bell and josh peck went from the amanda show to drake & josh. miranda cosgrove and jerry trainor went from drake & josh to icarly. victoria justice went from zoey 101 to victorious
they all seem to take a character from the main cast who wasnt the main focus (and was young enough) and then just. give them an entire show
where am i going with this??? excellent question
ELLA ANDERSON
at 14, shes young enough to still get a few seasons out of but still be/pass as a high schooler, and she was more of a secondary role
we're also seeing more of her in hd eps, giving her more public attention
am i suggesting that, mayhaps, we get a show starring ella anderson??? its possible. its happened before
it might not, obviously. dans not in charge anymore, but its a common trend, so.... maybe???

Batty ‘bout THE BAT (1926 movie)
THE BAT (1926)
I watched (or rather re-watched, in 2 out of 3 cases) the film versions of The Bat in reverse order, starting with the 1959 production, then the 1930 widescreen talkie, and finally the 1926 silent version.
I’m glad I did.
Save the best for the last.
Between the stage and first screen version of the story, a novelization was published (purportedly by Mary Roberts Rinehart and Avery Hopwood themselves but actually ghost written by Stephen Vincent Benet), and one can see somebody early on gave serious thought on how to adapt a very stage bound story into a motion picture.
Both the novelization and the movie open with The Bat committing murder and jewel theft, then taunting the police by leaving a note telling them he’s heading off to the country for a vacation.
Once in the country, the story follows the basic plot of the stage play with a few exceptions, some minor, some medium, none really altering the story.
The police detective is now Moletti, not Anderson; Anderson becomes a comic relief private eye who wanders the premises brandishing two large revolvers (at one point in the proceedings there are five different guns being handed about).  The butler is no longer the mildly offensive stereotypical Washington but the holy-mother-of-pearl-wot-da-hell-were-you-thinking Japanese man servant Billy [sic!] who is made up to look like one of the aliens from The Outer Limits.
The Bat hizzownsef is seen rather than talked about as he is in the stage play, and that’s what makes this version stand out over all the others.
They also reduce the amount of cash stolen from $1,000,000 to $200,000 because somebody figured out even in hundred dollar bills a cool million is a lot of moola to lug around.
There’s a saying in show biz that nobody leaves the theater humming the scenery.
The 1926 version of The Bat is the exception to that.
The film was designed by William Cameron Menzies, a production designer / art director / screenwriter / producer / film director with an astonishing resume:  The Douglas Fairbanks and Michael Powell versions of The Thief Of Bagdad, Chandu The Magician, Alice In Wonderland, Things To Come, Nothing Sacred, The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer, Gone With The Wind, Rebecca, Foreign Correspondent, Spellbound, It’s A Wonderful Life, Invaders From Mars, and Around The World In 80 Days -- and that’s only a quarter of what he did!
Mary Pickford (older sister of Jack Pickford, who plays Brooks Baily in this version) once observed that it was a pity movies learned how to talk; they would have been so much better if they evolved the other way around.
The Bat is a perfect example of what she meant.
Menzies gives the film a literally larger than life, unreal dream-like quality.  Miniature shots depicting the mansion and the bank and the skyscraper where The Bat commits his first crime of the film deliberately look toy-like.
This is not inadequacy on Menzies’ part but a deliberate artistic choice.
The Bat also flies, something he does in no other version of the story, and his costume makes him look less like Batman, more like something out of a Mexican horror movie.
And the sets -- yowza!
The sets are huge, beyond palatial, representing a size and scope that dwarf the story going on.  This overwhelming art direction doesn’t lose the plot, it ignores it completely.
The Bat under Menzies’ art direction becomes a dream-like construct, more so than his over fantasies ever were.
This air of unreality works in the film’s favor; we lose interest in the mechanics of the plot and simply follow the story as it rushes along at a headlong pace.
There’s nothing in the slightest that’s realistic about this version of The Bat and to that I say thank you.  (Decades later Menzies revisited this style of set design with Invaders From Mars a prolonged dream sequence presented as a sci-fi story, with the sets becoming more and more stylized as the film progresses.)
The only way to improve this film would be to jettison the intrusive intertitles, used too often an attempt to work stage dialog into the story in a vain (and foolish!) attempt to fill spaces best left silent.
The Bat was directed by Roland West, who certainly kept things moving at a frantic pace.  West was a respected film director at the time and seemed poised for a long, successful career but The Bat Whispers, his 1930 sound remake of The Bat proved his next to last film.
West became one of those people whose lives, seemingly blessed and fortunate, suddenly start unraveling at incredible speed.  Implicated in the death of his mistress, actress Thelma Todd, he vanished from the Hollywood scene, becoming reclusive and ironically remotely involved in one of the great real life sea mysteries of the Pacific.
The success of both the stage play and screen versions of The Bat led to numerous imitations, including The Monster (1925, starring Lon Chaney and also directed by West), several versions of The Cat And The Canary, The Old Dark House (1932; remade in name only in 1963), plus lord knows how many B-movie and serial knock offs.  While the genre pretty much ran out of steam by the late 1930s, it still cropped up occasionally in various Abbott & Costello movies, the animated TV series Scooby Doo, Where Are You?, and of course, The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Long considered a lost film known only by a handful of stills featuring Menzies’ impressive sets and bizarre Bat costume, The Bat was rediscovered and restored in the 1980s and is widely available today.
(If I were king of the forest and had a time machine, I’d see to it that Harold Lloyd was cast as Brooks Baily, the accused bank clerk turned gardener, Lon Chaney as Detective Moletti / The Bat, Margaret Dumont as Cornelia Van Gorder, and Laurel & Hardy split the role of private eye Anderson.)

Tammy came home over the weekend.  She had signed up for another week, but it wasn’t meant to be.  I won’t deny she had me worried, but she is fine.  On her 20th day, she scheduled It off.  She hoped that she would be rest and recoup for the next week.  When I talked with her that morning, I knew she was exhausted and so tired.  I had noticed in the last week she was getting more quite.  I was already uneasy.  Late that afternoon, she text and said she was leaving.  She had a car scheduled in an hour and she was driving home.  I wanted her to fly, but it wasn’t going to happen.  She want to get out now……She needed to drive, and have alone time….I was getting more worried.  I really didn’t want her to leave that late from New York City, a city she had never driven in.  But everyone who knows Tammy knows she loves to drive.  I think that is where she gets her peace and alone time.  She can drive straight through from Illinois to Harlingen Texas, (near Mexico Border) in 22 hours…..Crazy Driver…..I decided to text Katherine, her best friend at home.  She is a Nurse at IVCH in Peru.  If she would contact anyone else, it would be her.  Yes, they had already been talking.  As she left New York City, she called and I could tell she was already feeling better.  The weight was lifting.….Katherine sent me texts all evening and night.  Then I was up at 5 to make sure she got home…..What a Saturday it was….Yes, she pulled in Sunday by noon…..So here is her story in her words….

Tammy Bergen 22 hrs ·
I am gonna start this off by saying today is day 22! And the 1st day in 21 days that I have woke up in my own bed! I have missed my family and my friends so much! I might even say that i have missed Illinois! New York was a beast! I have seen thing and did things that i have never dreamed of. And I met so many so many great nurses, APN’s and Drs! They were from all across the United States! The staff was very welcoming as well. They would have lunch donated at times. My last day they had breakfast donated and brought in to us! And REAL coffee! 😍 lol while I was there I worked on 9 different units. I worked a couple of units more than once but for the most part everyday was like starting a brand new job. Everything was always new. The staff, the nurses I worked with, what supplies were available, what type of patients there were. Every unit was like opening a door to the twilight zone. You never know what is gonna be there. And the attitude was strong and everywhere! That is the best way I can describe it. It was not easy for me to go on every day with 5-6 hours of sleep mixed with the constant change. I was never able to develop “a work rhythm”? I’m not sure if that’s the word I am looking for but… And As many of you know, I have struggled with depression my whole life. And I ended up finding myself in a very very low spot. Around day 15 I started to cry everyday and I think day 19 I almost cried all day! (Fyi it’s very hard to tell if someone is crying when they are wearing all this head gear!) It was sooo hard. Even though we were there to help and shine some light into the darkness that is going on in New York right now, I lost control of myself and the darkness crept inside me... On the 20th I had the day off. They allowed us to have 2 pto days in this 21 day contract. My plan was to destress as much as possible and trudge through work one more time… and then cancel my 1 week extension and go home! But by the end of day 20 all I could think about was getting out of this cold dark place that I had found myself in. So rented a car and got the hell outta there at 7pm! It was truly one of the best things that I have ever done for myself. As I began driving away from NYC I could truly feel the heaviness of it all leave my body… and I could smile! A real smile! I talked to my mom and my best friend Katherine almost all the way home. I even had Cassidy on the phone for an hour and an half! And we had a great conversation! I was excited to surprise Cameron at the house so I never told him I was coming! Lol And I thank god my family and my friends are here for me everyday! A part of me is very ashamed or dissatisfied in myself for leaving a day early. But not any more. I am so proud that I was able to help in such a terrible situation! I have learned many things about myself through this experience. I will never regret it! But I don’t think I want to go back to NYC... ever! Lol thank you to everyone that sent us stuff! You guys really really really helped me personally!! And we shared with many others as well! I will never forget this experience! Aunt Connie told me that I would not be able to come back from this the same person. At the time I didn’t think to much about it. But…. she is so very right... not always! But this time! Lol I am just so happy to be home!❤❤❤ ps. Britt Novak is still rockin it in NYC! You got this girl!

Tammy is now home and doing well.  Now she has 2 weeks of quarantine before she can return to work.  I know she has missed the kids tremendously.  She has come back a changed person in so many ways…..She  has learned a lot about herself and will be stronger for it.  She will never forget the patients, nurses, doctors, and all the experiences of New York….She has accomplished something not many of us could or would ever undertake.  But she is a Nurse…..She took that Oath….She Believes in what she does….
WE ARE ALL SO PROUD
….She is an Amazing Nurse….
Now it is time for all the …..THANK YOU’S…. Her days were so busy.  14 hours of the day were work and transportation.  That didn’t leave much time for eating, sleeping, waiting for your mail for 45 min.  and of course a through shower and disinfecting.  She became more physically and mentally exhausted every day.  So she didn’t have a lot of time to show her appreciation.  The one Company that needs a HUGE THANK YOU is Vactor Manufacturing from Streator Illinois…..
Tumblr media
Tammy mentioned to us she could use some Safety Glasses.  Aunt Connies’, Son in Law, Matt Rinaldo works for Vactor in Streator Illinois.  He went to HR to ask about Safety Glasses for the girls.  By noon, he had been given around 50 Safety Glasses.  HR also game him many FACE SHIELDS.  Their parent Company Federal Signal had sent them to their employees.  The employees had decided to give them to the Front Line people in the Medical Field that needed them.  They had already given a number of them to Morris Hospital.  Matt brought them to Connie who boxed them up and sent them to the girls.
Tumblr media
They were so needed.  As soon as she received them they were gone.  So not many pictures were taken.  I had been reading posts on the FB site of the Staffing Agency from the other nurses.  Those who had connections, were ordering them in quantity’s for their friends.  The hospitals didn’t have any.  They were pretty desperate to get them.  These Shields were so Appreciated.  So …..THANK YOU VACTOR…. also Matt and Connie for sending them to New York…..

Face Shields and Safety Glasses from Vactor….Overlooking the Times Square… NYC
So many other items were sent.  So here in Tammy’s words again are all her Thank You’s

I as MOM want to give a SPECIAL THANK YOU, to Tina, for being the BEST SISTER Tammy could ever have.  She has done so much that you all will never know.  She was their from the minute Tammy made this descion to go, by getting supplies ready and MANY MANY other things concerning Carly’s care.  My Kids are all so AWESOME….Brittney is still their finishing her extended week.  She is doing ok.  Everyone has been so supportive of the girls and of all the Medical Personnel.  These people are helping and reporting the truths of what is happening in New York City.  They have answered the call not knowing where they were going to work, where they were going to stay.  They all knew they were putting their life on the line…..But they all went anyway…..They worked 12 hours straight covered in PPE.  So many had shortages of PPE, and much hospital supplies.  Some of the story’s I read were mindboggling to think nurses had to operate in such a manner and do things that were so unethical in the hospital setting.  And then the stories of the patients.  So heart wrenching……So many that passed alone….With only the nurse present….The last words from the family’s on the cell phones of the Nurses….
…..Memories these Medical Personnel Will Never Forget….
Tammy’s Home From New York ….. Coronavirus…..Thanks To All Tammy came home over the weekend.  She had signed up for another week, but it wasn't meant to be.

I'm going to guess that my last message didn't send? But yeah injury prone-ness really is dependant on both body type and also smart coaching and conditioning. If Maddie Kocian who can't seem to go a year without injuries and missed basically her entire junior career to injuries could make 3 major teams in a row that shows you that smart coaching is so important. And I say I'm not getting g attached to juniors but in not sure how long it will last to be fair, like Cameron Machado from first
(cont.) State is looking amazing and I'm also going to euros in 2018 for a few days and I'm watching apparatus finals which are mixed between juniors and seniors so I guarantee I'm going to pick reason favourites there too, hopefully they'll all be Tokyo eligible and I don't have to hope they hold on until Paris 🎅🏼
No sorry, I didn’t get any message that I haven’t posted :(
Yessss Cameron Machado looks so interesting, she has such a cool skillset for a junior! I hope she doesn’t break. I’m still scarred at how amazing Bailie Key and Nia Dennis were as juniors and how they never managed to bring that potential into their senior career (or have a senior career at all UGH). I hope they have the actual best time in ncaa, they both deserved better.
Omg I decided not to go to euros this year cause I’ve already been to Glasgow too many times, even tho I absolutely adore Scotland in general. But yeah, good luck not getting hyped about the juniors hahah if you know how not to do that let me know!

On December 22nd 1715 James Francis Stewart,  landed in Peterhead from France.
If you read through this you might wonder, with this amount of support, how the '15 uprising failed. It's a pity the rest of Scotland didn't have the enthusiasm as this small corner of North East Scotland.
Unfortunately it was all too late as the uprising had fizzled out after Mar’s inability to press forward after Sherrifmuir, so we shall take a look at where James Stuart came ashore, the loyal town of Peterhead. Much of this is taken directly from testimony taken around the time of the Uprising.
The people of Peterhead were in the main loyal to the Sturts, and were involved in the Jacobite uprisings from beginning to end. The town proudly remembers the numbers involved and the names of some…..
In total the number of Peterhead folk called to arms in defence of the town were 138 men and 10 women – yes Peterhead women prepared to take up arms to fight for the King – Janet Dickie, Margaret Greig, Geills Scott, Margaret Dun, Elspat Mitchell, Janet Cruickshank, Mrs Walker, Elisa Bruce and Widow Bodie and Widow Brown. They were ordered to arm themselves with “ane sufficient gun charged with powder and bullets, and four spare shots besides, and ane sufficient sword” and to meet at the Cross on the appointed day, where they marched and took part in military drills. 7 Spanish cannons, salvaged from the St Michael in 1588 were taken from their position on the Battery at Keith Inch, pulled across the sand bank at the Quinzie (Queenie), and mounted on the Tolbooth Green, looking down Broad Street for the defence of the interior of the town.
On 9th September 1715 the Earl of Mar, appointed Commander-in-Chief by the exiled ‘Pretender’ King James, issued a Proclamation at Braemar signalling the start of the 1715 uprising:
“Now is the time for all good men to show their zeal for His Majesty’s service, whose cause is so deeply concerned, and the relief of our native country from oppression, and a foreign yoke too heavy for us and our posterity to bear; and to endeavour the restoring, not only of our rightful and native king, but also our country to its ancient, free and independent constitution under him whose ancestors have reigned over us for so many generations.”
On 25th October the exiled King James wrote to his supporters in Scotland: “We have not been able to look upon the present condition of our kingdoms, or to consider their future prospect without all the horror and indignation which ought to fill the breast of every Scotsman. We have beheld a foreign family, aliens to our country, distant in blood, and strangers even to our language, ascend to the throne.
“We are come to take our part in all the dangers and difficulties to which any of our subjects from the greatest down to the meanest may be exposed on this important occasion, to relieve our subjects of Scotland from the hardships they groan under and to restore the kingdom to its ancient, free and independent state.
“But we hope for better things. We hope to see our just rights and those of the church and people of Scotland, once more settled in a free and independent Scots Parliament on their ancient foundation.”
On 31st October (Hallowe’en), the Magistrates and Town Council of Peterhead met at the Tolbooth (near the present Tolbooth Wynd), under the direction of the Secretary to the Earl of Erroll (from Slains Castle), George Leith, who was also Major General of Horses under the command of the Earl Marischal, with an order from the Earl of Mar, Chief Commander of King James’s forces in Scotland, which he read – ordering twelve of their number “to be ready mounted on horseback with sword and sufficient firelock, tomorrow precisely at six of the clock, to be witnesses to the said Mr Leith, his requiring the Lord Saltoun (of Fraserburgh) to give all due obedience to the foresaid orders.”
On 1st November (All Saints’ Day), 16 mounted “fenceable men” rode to Fraserburgh to proclaim the King. They were George Leith (Secretary to the Earl of Erroll), Bailie Cruickshank, Bailie Arbuthnot, Thomas Forbes, James Whyte, James Park, John Thomson, George Cruickshank, Alex. Smith (merchant), Robert Smith, John Logan, John Taylor, William Jollie, Alex. Forbes, James Blair & William Ramsay. The band of armed Jacobites rode off north towards Fraserburgh to “require” the Lord Saltoun to obey the orders from the Earl of Mar in support of King James.
About half a mile short of Fraserburgh the Peterhead band met Lord Saltoun and “obliged him to stop until the General’s orders were read to him. ”It was demanded of him “what Party he inclined to join with” and that he “appear at His Majesty’s Royal Standard”. Lord Saltoun answered that “he regarded neither Mr Leith nor his orders more than a footman” and further said that “at a whistle, he could raise a hundred men and cause them to fight all there present.”
Bailie Cruickshank answered that he believed they wouldn’t see them at Fraserburgh, where they immediately went and “proclaimed the King with all the solemnity we could, which we found did oblige the most of the inhabitants of that town.”
A party from the group went in search of arms, which they found in the chamber of the Clerk’s house. They broke open the door of the chamber with “ane big hammer” and found 24 new firelocks, proof marked, and all with A.R. (Anna Regina) on them, all charged with balls and gunpowder. The arms were taken back to Peterhead and handed to George Leith for the General’s use.
Later, a party of Jacobites, led by Irvine of Crimond, captured Lord Saltoun and forced him to go south to join the Jacobite army at Perth. Fraserburgh was then occupied by a Jacobite garrison, which compelled the inhabitants to contribute towards the payment of the soldiers.
On 13th November both the Earl Marischal and James Keith fought at the Battle of Sheriffmuir near Stirling. The Earl Marischal was 22 years old, and his brother 19 at the time of the Battle. James suffered a musket ball wound in his shoulder and spent the night in agony at Castle Drummond.
James Francis Edward Stuart (King James VIII) landed at Peterhead late on the night of 22nd December 1715, suffering from seasickness and fevers after having travelled 7 days (5 or 6 days according to other sources) by sea from Dunkirk in a well-armed vessel laden with a cargo of brandy. He arrived with six other gentlemen, including James Francis Fitzjames Stuart, grandson of King James VII, and Lieutenant Allan Cameron (a son of Lochiel), whom he sent immediately to Perth with the news of their arrival.
James Stuart was 27 years old, and this was the first time he had set foot in Britain since his father was driven into exile in 1688 (when James was six months old). He had lived at the Scots Court at Saint-Germain-en-Laye near Paris under the protection of the French King Louis XIV.
At first the small boat crept along the shore and attempted to enter the River Ugie, presumably to get as near as possible to Inverugie Castle, but “the night was wet and late the tide”, so they instead landed at the old pier of Port Henry Haven. The unexpected visitors were graciously received at the harbour by the Earl Marischal’s representative – the Baron Bailie Thomas Arbuthnot.
According to contemporary accounts they were “all habited like sea-officers, and passed for friends of the Pretender, going to Perth for his Service”. The vessel was despatched back to France with the news of James’s safe arrival.
They stayed the night at what is now Park Lane, near the Longate – at the house of the Baron Bailie’s brother-in-law, Captain James Park, merchant and ship owner. Here James wrote a short letter, dated “Peterhead, December 22nd, 1715” to say “I am, at last, thank God, in my own ancient kingdom as the bearer will tell you with all the particulars of my passage. I am weary and won’t delay a moment the bearer.”
A local song which commemorated the landing of the King at Peterhead was sung for many years after this event.
“King James is land’t at Peterhead, an honour great to us indeed. The night was wet and late the tide, he couldna unto Ugie ride.He slept a night in our good town, upon a good saft bed o’ down.In the morning when he raise, the Marischal’s bailie brushed his claithes. He’s come to set auld Scotland free from cursed Hanover tyranny.”
On the morning of 23rd December King James left by horseback, past Buchanhaven and then west by the old turnpike that skirted the south bank of the Ugie, to Inverugie Castle to visit the widowed Lady Mary Keith, mother of the Earl Marischal.
He passed the next night at Newburgh before carrying on to Aberdeen, accompanied only by a handful of horsemen, in ill health and in disguise. A contemporary account reports “’Tis said the Pretender is very much indisposed since his arrival, which is imputed to the great fatigue he has suffered at sea, and otherwise of late.”
The Earl Marischal and James Keith met King James for the first time at Fetteresso on 27th December, making their way to Dundee on 6th January, James Stuart entering the town with the Earl of Mar riding at his right hand and the Marischal at his left.
On 7th January 1716, they briefly set up court at Scone and arrived at Perth on 8th January.
On 30th January, the King, along with the two Keith brothers, the Earl of Mar and other main supporters, made for Montrose, where the King sailed back to France on 4th February 1716 on the ‘Maria Teresa of St Malo’. James Stuart had been only 43 days on Scottish soil. The Earl of Mar accompanied him back to France and served as his Secretary of State until 1722.
The first picture is a contemporary (if fanciful) illustration which appeared in a news sheet at the time. Clearly drawn by someone who had never visited Peterhead, it shows James Francis Stuart’s arrival the second at Proclamation Pend in the town of Peterhead celebrates arguably one of the most most historic event in the towns history

Travel 2020: Forecasting the new decade of travel was one of the largest travel industry consumer reports conducted with a sample of almost 20,000 Australian travellers giving insight into the direction of domestic and international travel.  Initiatied by Luxury Escapes, research firm, Nature, undertook the mammoth task of surveying its member base of 3.2 million.
“We know that Australians love to travel, and this research confirms it, showing Australians are planning to travel even more in the coming decade, with frequent domestic travel and an annual trip overseas, increasingly to celebrate life’s milestones, to relax and recharge, or to blend work with a holiday – all themes that we saw from this research and that marry up with what we’re experiencing” Luxury Escapes CEO Cameron Holland says.  “We’re seeing more and more the importance of providing relevant experiences through personalisation whilst also inspiring travellers to visit destinations they never previously considered thanks to our sophisticated algorithms.”
The report found that Aussies love to travel, with one in two respondents spending at least $2,000 a year on domestic travel and three in ten spending more than $10,000 a year on international travel.
