"Good Times" | Mike Bankhead | Dir. Paul A. Notice II
youtube
For “Good Times,” I wanted to use a quick dip into my personal life, as a framework to examine the complexities of Black Existence. I’d wager one of the biggest commonalities we have in the Black Experience is reconciling what the world sees/expects of us, and who we really are. We’re haunted by the racialized toxic positivity alluded to in the lyrics “Shut Me Up for the Good Times,” the anti-Black intentions behind mass incarceration in “Lock Me Up for the Good Times,” and cognitive dissonance from a litany of Double Consciousness byproducts.
So, I repurposed found footage into a gallery of memories, demonstrating all of the joy, grief, play, and resilience of Black life portrayed in the song. Rather than essentializing us down to oppression, or offering apologist rhetoric for colorblind racism, we follow Mike’s lyrics as they weave throughout a multitude of Black experiences. Because people are more than just one thing at one given point in time. Trayvon Martin isn’t just a murdered unarmed Black teenager.  He was a son, a weekend snowboarder, a science camp geek, a jokester, a human being. Robbing Black folx of that existential complexity dehumanizes us.

Tonight She Comes is a movie low in budget but high on enthusiasm; unfortunately it’s also only half a good movie. With the exception of a striking opening sequence the movie is so very definitely a movie of two halves it could be hinged in the middle. The latter half of the movie is where the good stuff, the gooshy stuff, lives; unfortunately to get to it, like some harrowing rite of passage, you have to suffer through the first half, which is festooned with terribleness like a jungle of awful.
Tumblr media
After the wickedly hopes-raising pre credits sequence we are introduced to the two flavours of dumb: male and female. Ashley (Larissa White) and Lyndsey (Cameisha Cotton) are driving to visit Kristy (Dal Nicole) and, I hesitate here because I’m not entirely sure, but I think Ashley tries to get Lyndsey to sniff her menses stained fingers. This is not only unsanitary but also very dangerous in a moving vehicle. There are a lot of things wrong with Tonight She Comes (such as its failure to acknowledge the sacrosanct nature of the United States Mail, more anon) but it is admirably direct when painting its characters in their respective shades of idiocy. And it takes, fair’s fair, an equal opportunities approach to its idiocy; neither gender is spared.
Tumblr media
James (Nathan Eswine) is some kind of postman but he just drives round in his normal clothes in an old truck, and when he has a delivery for Kristy but finds she is out, he just hangs around and sleeps in an outdoors hammock until she gets back. This is ridiculous behaviour, no doubt leaving him open to disciplinary action on his return to the depot. He should have just scribbled on a pre-printed form and stuck that through the letterbox, requiring Kirsty to pick up her item or arrange for delivery at a more convenient time. You’re going to have a hard time convincing me about demonic monstrosities later if you can’t even get the fundamentals of the postal service right. I joke, but not much; the little things matter. Little things matter a lot to Pete (Adam Hartley), James’s friend. And by that I mean his cock is important to Pete. Passing quickly over the fact that this “postman” has his friend just rock around with him, uh, because, which further undermines any realism viz a viz the American Postal Service.  Tampering with the mail is a Federal offence, and it’s hard to imagine a mincebrain like Pete doing anything but tampering with the mail, when he isn’t tampering with himself, anyways.
Tumblr media
I don’t really know what’s going on with the Pete character, he’s beyond sex pesting and deep into being someone who should be on a police register somewhere. When he first sees Ashley and Lyndsey sunbathing at the other side of the lake he immediately whips out his little telescope for a looksee and then gives his even smaller telescope an enthusiastic polish. In full daylight at the side of the lake, this is. Again, this is ridiculous behaviour. Unless matt Stuertz really hates Adam Harley, I don’t really get this Pete character art all. So, all these people are stupid or obnoxious or a thrilling combination of the two, and eventually the girls meet James and they all drink, flirt and talk inane balls until you wish that whoever is sinisterly roaming around watching them would, please, in the name of all that’s Holy, do something!
Tumblr media
Eventually someone does do something: Kristy turns up. Unfortunately she is spookily mute, bare ass naked and immediately upon her arrival re-enacts the sleeping bag kill from Friday The 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988) with a pissed up Lyndsey. James and Ashley force their way into Kristy’s cabin and discover the people to whom the earlier roving POV belonged. At this point, possibly as a result of expectations having been ruthlessly diminished by the preceding crawl of stupid, Tonight She Comes turns into a much better movie. The cast enlarges, the acting improves, horrible things happen, an actual honest to god story threatens to materialise and there are some stakes and a real sense of creepy urgency.
Tumblr media
I’m unsure as to whether credit is due to someone who delivered the prolapse of a first half but…Matt Stuertz comes up trumps in the latter part. Admittedly this is down to a pretty great performance from Jenna McDonald as Felicity, who really injects some pep into the movie’s step. Better late than never, eh? Special mention must also go to Dal Nicole as Kristy/The Naked Girl who trounces the record previously held by brave Betsy Rue in My Bloody Valentine (2009) for Most Onscreen Time Spent Naked In a Horror Movie. There’s nothing sexual about her nudity either, it’s just…there; like it should be. Which is amazingly restrained for a movie featuring a creep like Pete. Despite trying really hard not to be, Tonight She Comes turns out to be worth watching. Well the back half does. You have been warned.

New UK Trailer for the Cabin in the Woods Horror 'Tonight She Comes'
"Yesterday she was chosen, at midnight she was sacrificed, this morning she was buried. And tonight she comes." Studiocanal UK has debuted one final official trailer for Matt Stuertz's Tonight She Comes, a new horror film set in a cabin in the woods (but of course). This already premiered at film festivals in 2016, and opened this week in the US and is available on DVD in the UK, so if you're interested it shouldn't be hard to find. Tonight She Comes is about a group of friends who go to an isolated cabin after another woman goes missing nearby. As the sun sets, they drink, laugh and flirt. But as midnight approaches, little do they realize death is not far away. The cast includes Larissa White, Jenna McDonald, Dal Nicole, Frankie Ray, Adam Hartley, Cameisha Cotton, Brock Russell, and Nathan Eswine. For die-hard horror fans only. ›››

"Willow: House of Griots" is an Afrofuturist, Anti Capitalist, Womanist Horror Film set in the alternate reality of “Moja One,” where a successful 1811 German Coast Slave Revolt leads to a multi-ethnic near-utopia, outlawing White Supremacy and most systemic instruments it uses. However, in this reality, consuming others grants one electrical power, regenerative healing, and the memories of their victim - a metaphor that viscerally reveals capitalism’s inherent violence, and toxic allure. Desperate to pay rent, or risk being eaten alive, Willow, a brooding elected observer of alt worlds & timelines, better known as a Griot, navigates her way to Power.
""Willow" is my practice in radical filmmaking: meant to push the Overton Window to the Progressive Left, root it in Queer, Womanist history, and wrap it in thick, unflinching Blackness. I want people to see this and think to themselves, “Why not?” Why not dream of true liberation?  Or maybe even, “What is True Liberation?”"  -- Executive Producer & Writer Paul A. Notice II
