Big week for news about “mountain lions wandering back into historic habitat where they were once persecuted to extinction” in February 2023.
---
Central Texas:
Headline and screenshots from: Priscilla Aguirre. “Potential mountain lion sighting in San Antonio area raises awareness.” My San Antonio. 14 February 2023.
Excerpt from this article: Officials at the San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department are asking others and the surrounding areas to be cautious about potential mountain lions in Central Texas. Officials said the message comes after the department received a call about a potential sighting of a mountain lion at Upper Purgatory Creek Natural Area in San Marcos on Sunday, February 12. [...] In Central Texas, it’s extremely rare to see a mountain lion in person, according to a report from the San Antonio Express-News. [...] Only one mountain lion has been confirmed in Bexar County in the past decade, on November 24, 2013, according to TPWD. [End of excerpt.]

Great Plains and Nebraska:
Headline and screenshot from: Damon Bennett. “Nebraska mountain lion now looking for a name after 700-mile journey.” Lincoln Journal-Star. 16 February 2023.
Excerpt from this article: A Nebraska mountain lion that found itself in a sanctuary in Indiana after a 700-mile journey through four states is now looking for one last souvenir: a name. Back in the fall, the big cat made its way from the scenic Niobrara River valley all the way to suburban Springfield, Illinois, according to the GPS tracker that Nebraska Game and Parks had tagged it with a year prior. "A lot of people were watching him," said [the director of an “exotic feline rescue center”] in Center Point, Indiana, where the mountain lion has been since October. When the lion overstayed its welcome near Springfield, it was sedated by federal wildlife officials, who offered to return it to Nebraska. Nebraska declined.’ [...] "I'm incredibly impressed with this animal; he crossed both the Missouri and Mississippi rivers [...]." [End of excerpt.]

Ozarks and Missouri:
Headline and screenshot from: Julia Wilson. “Mountain lions in Missouri? We’re seeing more than usual this winter.” Columbia Missourian. 16 February 2023.
Excerpt from this article: Footage from a trail camera taken Jan. 3 confirmed that a roaming mountain lion made a rare appearance in northern Boone County. Since then, the Missouri Department of Conservation documented three additional sightings around the state last month — one in Callaway County, another in Montgomery County and a third that was hit by a vehicle south of St. Louis. Reports of mountain lions, also known as cougars, pumas and panthers, have increased over the past decade in the state. Between 2013 and 2022, a total of 65 were counted around Missouri. Compare that to the years between 1994 and 2006, when only 12 were spotted. [...] The animals may come from an established colony in the Black Hills, cross Nebraska and wander into Missouri, according to the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. Missouri’s extensive forest coverage, which includes 35% of state acreage, then becomes an ideal destination for the animals. Mountain lions have roamed Missouri since pre-settlement times. Their range crosses the western hemisphere from Canada to southern Chile. [...] Although they are seen across the state, over half of all sightings have been documented within 40 miles of Mark Twain National Forest in southeast Missouri. [...] Trophy hunting by early colonists wiped out most of the population east of the Mississippi River. [...] Except for the recent encounter in Franklin County where a lion was hit by a vehicle, the last documented human contact occurred in December 2021 during another vehicle collision. [End of excerpt.]

Excerpt from this story from Canary Media:
When prominent entrepreneur Jigar Shah took over as head of the Energy Department’s Loan Programs Office in 2021, he had one primary mission: To get “dollars out the door.”
Now the office, which offers financing to clean energy technologies that struggle to borrow from banks and received a huge boost of money from the Inflation Reduction Act, is rushing to do just that before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January. The incoming president, flanked by Republican majorities in both chambers of Congress, is expected to target unspent funds under the IRA, including LPO programs — putting at risk billions of loan dollars yet to be granted or finalized.
With Inauguration Day looming, the office has increased its activity in recent weeks. Since last Monday alone, the LPO announced four new conditional commitments for loans and loan guarantees and finalized a pending offer.
On Tuesday [December 3, 2024], long-duration energy storage company Eos closed a $303.5 million DOE loan guarantee to help it scale production. The day before [December 2, 2024], the DOE stated it planned to lend up to $7.5 billion to finance two electric vehicle battery manufacturing plants in Kokomo, Indiana. And one week earlier, the agency announced a conditional loan guarantee of nearly $5 billion to finance Grain Belt Express Phase 1, an interregional transmission line that will run between Ford County, Kansas, and Callaway County, Missouri.
Last Monday [November 30, 2024], the agency also announced conditional commitments for a direct loan of $6.6 billion to Rivian to build an EV manufacturing plant in Stanton Springs North, Georgia, and a loan guarantee of $290 million to Sunwealth to deploy up to a thousand solar PV systems and battery energy storage systems across 27 states.
Under the Biden administration, LPO has so far doled out just under $55 billion in funding across 32 deals for battery and EV manufacturing, nuclear reactors, “clean” hydrogen facilities, virtual power plants, and critical minerals projects. The majority of the LPO’s investments have gone to Republican districts, according to a Politico analysis.
Most of the financing deals LPO has announced — about $41 billion worth — remain conditional, meaning the loans or loan guarantees are not yet finalized and depend on the companies meeting certain benchmarks.
Legal experts say that while the LPO’s 14 closed loans, which total more than $13 billion in investments, should remain safe from Republican backlash, delaying or undoing conditional funds could be much easier. “Immediately following inauguration of the new president, there is likely to be a period of inaction on financial assistance awards that are in negotiation and on announced funding opportunities,” wrote Hogan Lovells attorney Mary Anne Sullivan.

Okay, so Vocal Coaches are amazing. They give you personalized advice for singing based on your own voice and it’s great.
However, if you can’t get a vocal coach, it’s possible to learn through observation. This gets a bit tricky since it’s very easy to fall into mimicking other people’s voices, which isn’t healthy/sustainable for most singing purposes. Ideally, you want to mimic the technique, not the voice. Now, a good thing to do when you want to learn new techniques is to find singers who have voices similar to yours and see what they do.
If they have a similar voice to yours, the vocal maneuvers that are healthy for them have a better chance of translating over to you.
You can track them to find more fun songs to sing.
When looking for these singers, match your voice types, vocal timbres, and preferred music genre.
Voice types are: Soprano (High Female), Mezzo Soprano (Middle Female), Alto (Low Female), Tenor (High Male), Baritone (Middle Male), Bass (Low Male)
Some things that describe vocal timbres are: “Bright” (Sounds higher, more youthful. Think 1937 Snow White for high female voices, 1997 Anastasia for lower female voices. The closer it sounds to Spongebob or a Wicked Witch, the brighter it is), “Warm” or “Dark” (Sounds like it has depth, a little more mature. Think 1959 Sleeping Beauty for soprano voices, 1950 Cinderella for Mezzo or Alto Voices. The closer it sounds to a Femme Fatale character or to Patrick Warburton, the darker it is), and there are more but I don’t know the technical terms. If a voice type is a range, then a timbre is the way a voice sounds within that range.
I haven’t heard a song that wasn’t from a musical since 2016, so all my examples of singers are broadway or movie musical stars. I have blind spots. You can find more people using your ears, a recording of your own singing, and a radio/music streaming service.

OC | Vera Callaway
Age 24 | Born June 14, 1877 | Gemini
Being a motherly figure to her friends, Vera often finds herself scolding and praising them. She is the very definition of loyalty and passion. Even though Vera can be rather ditsy and forgetful at times, she always tries her hardest at the things she commits to. There has never been a moment that she hasn’t had the best interest of her loved ones in mind.
Vera is a collector of beautiful things. Memories, trinkets, letters, photographs, flowers, gifts, and anything pocket-size. Everything anyone gives her is precious to her.
Writing, reading, gardening, traveling, carpentry, sewing, and drawing are all things she has put a lot of time and effort into over her lifetime.
Eventually, Vera would love to write about her love story.
Vera comes from a little town quite far away from Syn County. She was raised by a mother who tailored and a father who owned a carpentry company. Her younger sister, Jennie, passed away from pneumonia when Vera was 12 years of age. The two sisters were as close could be with a two-year age gap. Grief and loneliness lead Vera down an angsty path full of teenage rebellion, stealing, and trespassing with some of her peers. Her actions strained the relationship she held with her parents, friends, and neighbors. This carried on until Vera turned 15. After a more serious bout of revolt, her parents grounded her and forbade her from leaving the house for months. Her only escape from her home was working at her father’s shop. Weeks passed and Vera sunk into a depression caused by losing her outlet.
One cloudy day in autumn, a boy around Vera’s age entered her father’s shop with his family. The young boy took an immediate interest in her after they met, coming back daily to try and get the chance to spend time with her. Despite her efforts to keep to herself, Vera couldn’t help but to warm up to him. Holden Barnes. The depression that once engulfed her very being, making her more miserable by the day, was fading with every word he spoke. For the next few months, Holden would stop by the shop where she was working and spend hours upon hours getting to know her. He brought her flowers, candies, and on occasion, little wooden sculptures he crafted himself. Time passed and Vera’s punishment ended. It seemed like every waking moment of her day was spent with Holden and the two became inseparable. She confined in him some of her deepest thoughts and he listened intently, gazing at her as if she was the world’s prettiest painting. In their spare time, they could be found by the lake. Vera would lay her head in Holden’s lap as he reads her excerpts from books she picked out and caresses her hair. Their love was profound, accepting, wholesome, dignified- it was the sort of relationship found only in old stories.
Holden proposed with his great grandmother’s ring on a sunny spring morning, a year and a half after they met. She was 18 and he was 19 at the time. They planned the wedding on the date of their first meeting, in fall. Both families were delighted to hear the news after witnessing such a harmonious love blossom. Vera’s mother gave her the wedding dress her grandmother wore, and it fit perfectly, as if it was meant to be.
Vera visited Jennie’s grave often, but even more so as the date of the wedding got closer. She dreamt of Jennie’s excitement from the engagement, how beautiful Jennie would look like as her maid of honor, and what Jennie’s opinion of Holden would be. Vera was sure that her sister would have approved of her fiancé if she were there. Jennie was the sort of soul that radiated happiness and excitement. She chased love and she embraced her surroundings. Vera knew that Jennie would have simply been happy that someone was able to heal her broken heart.
Holden worked as a farmhand on his family’s land just outside of town. No more than two weeks before the wedding, machinery that Holden was using malfunctioned, giving him fatal injuries. His family rushed him into town, desperately trying to get to the local doctor and searching for Vera. By the time news reached Vera and she raced to the clinic, Holden had succumbed to his wounds.
Sorrow, anguish, and despair are not words strong enough to describe the agony Vera felt after losing another loved one. The wedding was cancelled, and apart from Holden’s funeral, she did not leave her home for a month. The first person she visited after prying herself away from her bed was Jennie. Sitting in front of her grave, Vera sobbed until she ran out of tears and then she wailed until night came. Having lost her voice, she laid down on the grass surrounding Jennie’s grave and whispered her thoughts. A week later, Vera visited Holden’s grave.
Months passed and 20-year-old Vera continued working at her father’s shop. There was a melancholy resemblance to before Holden was in her life, as if nothing had happened at all. Every time the shop door would open, a tiny part of Vera’s heart would break by seeing the absence of him. Not being able to withstand the heartbreak in her hometown anymore, she said her farewells to her loved ones and left.
Vera spent four years traveling by herself and in that time, she learned how to fend for herself, get by without having much of anything to call her own, and carve little wooden figures.
Now, in 1901, 24-year-old Vera Callaway resides in Syn County. She had no intention of staying until feeling the presence of home in the beautiful landscapes. It was unlike any other county she had crossed before. While she’s unsure what awaits her, there is a mixed sensation of excitement and hope growing inside.
Vera carries a photograph that was taken of her and Holden when they got engaged as well as a small wooden figure of a bear that was carved by Holden.
The diamond ring Vera wears has not come off of her finger since Holden proposed with it.
Vera Callaway was born with a strong, independent will. She has always been a force to be reckoned with and there is not a single thing that could change that about her. Even in the darkest, most agonizing moments of her life, Vera remained the same strong young woman. There are some people who go almost their entire life without facing pain, loss, intense disappointment, or life-changing moments. Then there are some people who face those hurdles young, and in those cases, not many reach the finish line and can still recognize themselves.
Holden’s love for Vera was driven by his appreciation and deep respect for her. He looked at Vera in such a way that could make anyone believe in true love. It was a gaze full of delight and desire. So gentle yet flooded with lust. Each time she laughed his heart beat twice as heavy and every time she would yawn he would stop and stare at the way her nose crinkled slightly. Her giggles, sneezes, cries, yells, whispers, and snores were Holden’s favorite noise. There wasn’t a moment that they spent together when he wasn’t cherishing her presence and thanking the universe for introducing him to her. Some days, Holden believed that it was Vera’s world and he just lived in it.
Vera’s love for Holden wasn’t driven by her grief and loneliness. She loved way his lips curled when he said something cocky. She loved it when he would hold one hand and put the other on her waist when she was stepping over something. She loved his natural scent and unbelievably charming sense of humor. Their mutual respect and nurturing care for each other was the foundation of their devotion to one another. She embraced every part of Holden when she couldn’t do the same for herself. There wasn’t a thing in the world she wouldn’t give up for him. Vera wondered how it was possible for her mind to be so completely intimate with his, some days.
I imagine the first photo is Vera (17) in 1894, the second photo is Vera (18) in 1895, and the third photo is Vera (24) in 1901.
This is my first time writing about an oc anywhere except my Word documents lol. I originally created Vera to play as in a RedM server but as I was writing her backstory I fell in love with her a little bit. Her love story with Holden makes my heart a lil happy and a lil hurt. Every day I get the inkling to write one-shots about them.
If you've read this far let me give you a hug :> because I appreciate it a lot. I'm too embarrassed to read all of this to my friends lol.

Celia (c. 1835 - December 21, 1855) was an enslaved woman found guilty of the first-degree murder of Robert Newsom, her enslaver, in Callaway County, Missouri. Her defense team led by John Jameson argued an affirmative defense: she killed Robert Newsom by accident in self-defense to stop Newsom from raping her, which was a controversial argument at the time. She was executed by hanging following a denied appeal in December Her memory was revitalized by civil rights activist Margaret Bush Wilson who commissioned a portrait of Celia from Solomon Thurman.
Not much is known of her origins or early childhood. Robert Newsom, a yeoman farmer, acquired her in Audrain County in 1850 to act as his concubine after his wife had died the previous year. This purpose may have been masqueraded as acquiring a domestic servant for his daughter Virginia Waynescott or as a same-aged companion for his youngest child Mary Newsom. On the way back to Callaway County, Newsom sexually assaulted her for the first time.
Newsom housed her separately from his other five slaves, all male, in a cabin close to the main house. She became involved with George, one of Newsom’s four adult male slaves, and began sharing this cabin with him by the beginning of 1855.
She had three children, at least one of which was indisputably Robert Newsom’s. Sometime during her incarceration, she delivered her third child. Earlier historians reported that this child was stillborn. More recent scholarship posits this child was sold following birth and is from whom her living descendants are descended. Following her execution, Harry Newsom, one of Robert Newsom’s adult sons, may have acquired one of her daughters, because a female enslaved child appears in his household in the 1860 census. According to the probate court of Callaway County, her daughters were sold in the year following her execution. It is unknown where her remains are interred. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

WWE legend The Undertaker, also known as Mark Callaway, made his own election video on social media following remarks made by fellow wrestling star Dave Bautista, who had criticized former President Donald Trump earlier in the week.
In the video, The Undertaker stood alongside his former WWE colleague, Kane (Glenn Jacobs), who is currently serving as the mayor of Knox County, Tennessee. The video featured both Callaway and Jacobs addressing voters and discussing the choices they will face in the upcoming election.
“All right everyone. Nov. 5 – ElectionMania. The choice is yours. You can go with President Trump, Kane and The Undertaker or you can take Kamala Harris, Dave Bautista and Tim Walz. Choose wisely – the nation depends on it,” Callaway said in a TikTok video.
“And that should be an easy choice,” Trump added.
The Undertaker’s involvement in the election conversation highlights his public support for conservative candidates, alongside Kane’s transition from wrestling to politics, where he is an active political figure.

2023 PGA Show VLOG - Demo Day ("Golfmas")
There are certain days in our lives that we look forward to. Perhaps, it’s the first day of spring or summer. Maybe, its the day that you retire, freeing up more time for golf or fishing. It could be a golf trip – I hear that these exist – or it could be an event, like a concert or The Masters. For me, Demo Day at the PGA Show is one of these days. Demo and Fitting Day gives me the opportunity…
