Olympic Park, Stellarton, NS
Blayre Turnbull used to play hockey on the pond at this park so the town renamed it and put up this plaque in her (and Babe Mason’s) honour after the 2018 Olympics. transcription of Blayre’s side under the cut:
Blayre Turnbull
“No matter what you are doing, try your best….… homework, practice, work, you will not be disappointed for your effort”. —Blayre Turnbull, Olympian, 2018
Dedication to the above words of wisdom have brought Stellarton’s Blayre Turnbull a rewarding career in her chosen profession of hockey. From the lasting memories as a young child of four learning to skate on this very Olympic Park Pond, to playing the game she so loves, with the best in the world.
Growing up in Stellarton, Pictou County, Blayre had great encouragement from family, local hockey organizations, community and a variety of people. She would state “The credit most importantly goes to my family, which continues to support my dreams; my coaches at Shattuck - St. Mary’s and the University of Wisconsin, who taught me to believe in myself; and many of my teammates, who challenge me to get better and be the best player I can be”.

Ok so here are my thoughts on the names and logos:
Toronto Sceptres - 7/10 the names is great, not what I expected but I like it. The logo is too intricate for me and I think it’s too much like a soccer logo. Also Bauer better give all the players gold sticks this year cause that would be sick
New York Sirens - 9/10 I WAS RIGHT the only thing is I think they mean it more like an actual siren than a mermaid thing which I don’t think is as good especially because New York is a port city and a sea creature would go perfectly with their already amazing color scheme
Boston Fleet - 9/10 it caught me off guard and I didn’t like it at first but it’s really grown on me. I need some fan art of Hilary Knight in like a colonial pirate outfit standing heroically on the bow of a ship with that giant pwhl Boston flag they had at games last year
Victoire de Montreal - 9/10 beautiful, amazing, show-stopping but calling yourself the Victory definitely opens up some good trash talk if they lose
Minnesota Frost - 7/10 I also predicted this one correctly but I agree it’s kind of boring and the logo reminds of La Force de Montreal from the phf. Like I said before I kind of wanted more animal or just plural names in general. (Also the Gatorade comparisons are hilarious)
And then Ottawa…
Ottawa Charge - 5/10 it’s just generally boring and the logo 100% looks like a Calgary flames ripoff. It also reminds of the cwhl where teams like the Calgary Inferno, Toronto Furies, and Les Stars/Canadiennes de Montreal had very similar branding to the nhl. It’s not bad it’s just the worst of the bunch and not very original
#pwhl#pwhl montreal#pwhl boston#pwhl minnesota#pwhl new york#pwhl ottawa#pwhl toronto#do I add the tags of the new names?

"R. B. Chadwick Censor of Moving Picture Films," Edmonton Journal. March 8, 1913. Page 16. --- Superintendent of Delinquent Children Appointed to Protect Public Against Showing of Pictures of on Immoral or Criminal Nature ---- R. B. Chadwick, superintendent of delinquent children for the province, has been appointed by order-in-council censor of moving picture films for Alberta Films bearing the stamp of the censor of other provinces are admitted without further inspection, but films being exhibited without having passed a censor are liable to seizure. Power is given to the police to seize films not bearing the censors' stamp. Mr. Chadwick acted as censor during the exhibition of the pictures showing the life and adventures of Lieut. Petrosino, and about 200 feet were cut out of the film.
Mr. Chadwick states that very few films come through to Alberta without having been before the censors in Ontario or New York city. The police draw the attention of Mr. Chadwick to any pictures that they think should not be exhibited, and he passes judgment upon them.
Picture Men Satisfied It is probable that other censors will be appointed in the cities of Calgary, Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat, with a central bureau through which, all reports of the censorship of films will pass. There are approximately between 50 and 60 picture shows in the province. Edmonton has the biggest number, there being a dozen in the city, while Calgary has six, and Lethbridge four. Almost every town of any importance also has its picture show.
A. R. Lawrence, manager of the Bijou theatres, who opened the first picture show in Edmonton five years ago, states that the moving picture men have the utmost confidence in Mr. Chadwick's judgment. He was under the impression that a board of three censors would be appointed, but If Mr. Chadwick was to exercise the right alone he would be perfectly satisfied..
Censors Differ. He thought that as far as possible the censorship of one province should hold good for another. While Mr. Chadwick and the deputy attorney-general saw nothing objectionable in the film showing Dante's Inferno, which had a long run in Edmonton, the authorities in Vancouver refused to allow it to be shown unless it was shown in a church and was explained. by a minister, while in Winnipeg the authorities asked that 82 feet should be cut out, eliminating a scene in which one of the characters has his eyes burned out.

A Good Day to Drive Hard
A ton of quirky, coming-of-age, summertime teen movies feature road trips. Or at least, that is what my brain is currently telling me. Well, I know not if I fall into the correct “quirky” category these characters do, I’m nearly a quarter of a century old, and I hate summer…but a road trip with the boys is happening nonetheless. Nothing screams adulthood like driving sixteen hours to go to a mall and a zoo. And nothing screams quirky goofy antics like outrunning wildfires the entire time. It’s a perfect introduction to summer.
Despite me getting carsick the second I smell the inside of a car, I’m excited. We’re gonna pass a bunch of A&W’s, we have that here but these will be interior flavoured. We’ll also go to Hot Topic, which we’ve been to on the mainland, but again, this’ll be interior flavoured. We’ll even get to see some giraffes, the same ones that were featured in “The Last of Us”, the hit show where the Mandalorian becomes a father figure to a human child instead of a Yoda-lookin one.
If you’re confused by me describing these places as “interior flavoured”, it’s because we be heading towards the interior of Canada. We’re going to Calgary! We’re going to Edmonton! And it’s gonna be super weird because the usual ocean is going to be very far away and a good chunk of the land will be flat. I’ve personally never been to another province as far as I know. I could’ve driven through one, I’m not sure since I typically pass out on long car rides for survival purposes. I’m looking forward to seeing some new scenery in theory, unless the smoke is so thick we can’t see anything. Either way, in spirit, we will experience different landscapes.
I made sure to pay my rent today just in case we get trapped by a merciless inferno past the first day of next month and I am ready to go. This will be the longest amount of time we’ve all hung out together. Six friends, one stupid ass looking car, five days of shenanigans. It’s probably gonna be wacky. All worth it though, since I’m finally going to see the terrifyingly gigantic West Edmonton Mall. I heard so much about this place when I moved to Canada and I was always so baffled by its size and offerings. It seems unreal, futuristic, overwhelming. I can’t wait to get lost.
This is definitely a much needed break too. Work has gotten incredibly stupid again and I want to be elsewhere right now. Every day that I saunter towards the mall where my soul goes to die, I see the bus I take home make its way to the stop I wait at after my shift. Every day, I want to run to that bus and go all the way back to my house. They do it in movies all the time with no consequences, but this is reality, so I’m going to go to another province and fist fight forest fires instead.
