Alberta Health Services is urging Albertans to protect themselves from pertussis after an increase in cases in Okotoks, Alta. and the Calgary Zone in recent months.
According to provincial data, there’s a big difference in vaccination rates between rural and urban communities for whooping cough.
Seventeen cases of pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, have been confirmed in the Okotoks area since November, including one person who was hospitalized. AHS said all the cases were “locally acquired.”
Another 22 cases were identified in other parts of the Calgary Zone during the same period, bringing the total to 39 cases. [...]

Mr. McIver: For example, when the city of Edmonton kept their mask bylaw in place in 2022, at the time Alberta’s government tabled Bill 4, the Municipal Government (Face Mask and Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination Bylaws) Amendment Act, 2022. That’s a mouthful, but it was necessary because the city of Edmonton chose to act like the provincial Health department, and that could not be let to stand.

Hey, my name is Michelle.
After giving it some thought I have decided to start a cheeky little blog outlining my experience as a gal trying to navigate ADHD and life.
I'm a now 30-something, with a pretty great job, amazing husband, a neat little heritage home to live in, a healthy family, and a lil' pomsky pup.
This is all the bees knees, but I hate to say it, there is, and always has been an undercurrent to my everyday emotional range.
For example, on a day where the sun is shining, I may be off in space considering how long it could take the sun to bleach out artificial flowers. All the meanwhile I should probably sit down and pay my bills already, or fold the laundry.
My mind is chaotic to say the least, and my life story has been equally as unhinged.
I have been fortunate enough to have a relatively normal family, but in my early twenties I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Following this, I was diagnosed with a secondary cancer when I was 26.
Since then, there have been many hiccups in my life, and some more major interruptions that have caused me some serious mental static.
Around two months ago, I found out I have severe ADHD and CPTSD. In learning this, I have learned so much about myself, and the hurdles I have faced.
It has been a pretty great opportunity to challenge myself, and reconsider my perspectives, and perhaps most importantly, cry less about random shit.
This blog is going to be a little safe space for sharing ideas, good reads, good tunes, and tricks I have found that help with my mental health journey.
In saying all this, I know that life is complicated, and everybody experiences adversity. I'm not a special snowflake, but if I can help anybody discover more, and perhaps find support, then that's pretty cool.
Thanks for reading, and I hope you have a stellar night!

Patients are losing Alberta’s public-private medical labs battle, November 1, 2023
Alberta’s medical labs have shifted between public and private delivery for decades, often depending on what party is in government, and now the province’s auditor general is investigating. CBC’s Christine Birak breaks down the medical and political saga that’s cost millions and had a negative impact on patient care. CBC News
@allthecanadianpolitics, @abpoli
I had my own brush with DynaLife three times in the last year, wait times and organization were horrendous at a lab that has always been high volume but was much better managed when they were public.
Their waiting room was not just crammed full, the wait times were so long they were paging people on their cell to return from their cars or from the mall across the way--some simply left without a word. Walk-ins alone were looking at least a hour seated wait time.
The single queue to check in was at least 30 minutes minutes standing, crammed in to the point people had to step out of the way of the doors. It included pregnant people, elderly, and others in need of priority with mobility aids and other conditions. Appointments were not immediately separated out from walk-ins or even simple drop off, the only instruction was for everyone to wait for the one person processing. Even when the line extended outside at the same location because of COVID social distancing it moved more efficiently.
There was clearly no regular process for stopping the line and refusing more patients despite this routinely being the case by the summer. While I was there one poor tech was delegated to end intake for the day early because they simply were overcapacity. After scrambling to make a couple signs to tape to the doors, they were completely ignored.
No one enforced a cutoff, the patients that were told they were the it remained silent or continued to open the door for more people. By the time staff reached what should have been the tail-end there was a a full queue again. I learned later that short of actually closing, policy was to continue to accept everyone in line and there was at least another hour after that to finish work and lock up.
This is one lab and next to one of the largest hospitals in Calgary, hospital internal labs and rural/community tests continued to be run by AHS's Alberta Precision (formerly Public) Labs. Only one instance that was relatively easy was right before the Christmas holiday when the transition to private was still new.
The technicians and phlebotomists were clearly struggling to do their best to keep the patients and their own morale up while understaffed and without the resources to preserve quality of service. I do not envy any of them being thrown the privatization curveball by the UCP and ultimately the people that voted to keep them in power, worse still for people that are depending on these services.
***
There is an entire history of neglect and privatization of Alberta's lab services under Conservative governments. Efforts by the Albertan NDP to consolidate, update, and expand the province's public lab services were quite literally bulldozed by Jason Kenney. Through the pandemic and now under Danielle Smith, the UCP has continued with plans to dismantle and portion off health care services, workers, and the facilities and now buying back our own labs, equipment, and employees less than a year later.

Alberta recorded the highest number of influenza deaths in 15 years, and some people are attributing the death toll to a decline in yearly immunization rates.
According to data from the province’s respiratory virus dashboard, 15,215 cases of lab-confirmed influenza cases were recorded this respiratory virus season, which started last fall. Currently, 42 people are in hospital and three people are in the intensive care unit because of the virus.
So far, 167 influenza deaths have been recorded so far during the 2023-24 flu season. One death was recorded from April 14 to April 20, according to data.
Many of the people who died were between 60 and 89 years of age.
Recent wastewater data in Alberta shows that influenza B cases have continued to rise since April 11 in the Calgary North, Calgary South and Calgary Far South regions.

Mr. Amery: If Bill 6 passes, elected representatives chosen by Albertans will ultimately have discretionary authority to make final decisions on public health orders in respect of all persons or a class of persons, including a class of individuals, bodies corporate, associations, nonprofit or for-profit organizations, all while taking into account the advice of the chief medical officer of health during a declared state of public health emergency.

Expert Insights from a Spine Doctor Calgary Clinic
Tumblr media
In the bustling city of Calgary, the demand for specialized healthcare services has grown significantly, particularly in the realm of pain management and spinal health. As individuals grapple with chronic pain, herniated discs, and other spinal issues, the expertise of a spine doctor Calgary becomes increasingly vital. In this article, we will delve into the insights provided by leading spine doctors in Calgary, exploring the techniques, treatments, and approaches they utilize to enhance patient outcomes.
Understanding the Role of a Spine Doctor
A spine doctor Calgary specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions related to the spine and surrounding structures. These specialists play a crucial role in managing a wide array of spinal disorders, including degenerative diseases, trauma, infections, and congenital conditions. Their training encompasses both surgical and non-surgical interventions, allowing them to offer comprehensive care tailored to each patient’s unique needs.
Common Conditions Treated by Spine Doctors
Herniated Discs
One of the most common conditions treated by a spine doctor Calgary is a herniated disc. This occurs when the soft inner gel of a spinal disc protrudes through a tear in the tougher exterior, potentially compressing nearby nerves. Symptoms often include pain, numbness, or weakness in the arms or legs.
Spinal Stenosis
This condition involves the narrowing of the spinal canal, which can lead to pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. Patients often report pain, numbness, and difficulty walking, which can significantly affect their quality of life.
Scoliosis
Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine that can develop during childhood or adolescence. A spine doctor Calgary employs a variety of treatments to manage this condition, ranging from observation to bracing and, in severe cases, surgery.
Degenerative Disc Disease
As individuals age, the discs in their spine can degenerate, leading to pain and decreased mobility. A spine doctor Calgary can provide pain management strategies and recommend lifestyle changes to alleviate discomfort.
Spinal Injuries
Whether due to accidents or sports injuries, spinal injuries can be severe and require immediate attention. A spine doctor Calgary will assess the injury and develop a treatment plan that may include physical therapy or surgical intervention.
Pain Management Strategies
Effective pain management is at the core of a spine doctor’s practice. Many patients seeking help at a Calgary clinic report chronic pain that affects their daily activities and overall well-being. The approach to pain management varies based on the underlying condition, but several key strategies are commonly employed.
Physical Therapy
Physical therapy is often the first line of defense in managing spinal pain. A spine doctor Calgary typically collaborates with physiotherapists to create customized rehabilitation programs. These programs focus on strengthening core muscles, improving flexibility and enhancing overall physical function. By addressing the root causes of pain, patients often experience significant relief.
Medications
For some patients, medication may be necessary to manage pain effectively. This can include over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs, prescription pain relievers, or muscle relaxants. A spine doctor Calgary carefully evaluates each patient’s needs to prescribe the most appropriate medications while minimizing potential side effects.
Injections
In cases where pain persists despite conservative treatments, a spine doctor Calgary may recommend epidural steroid injections or nerve blocks. These injections deliver anti-inflammatory medication directly to the source of pain, providing temporary relief and allowing patients to engage more fully in physical therapy.
Surgical Interventions
When non-surgical methods prove insufficient, surgery may be warranted. A spine doctor Calgary specializes in a range of surgical techniques, including minimally invasive procedures that reduce recovery time and improve outcomes. Surgical options can include spinal fusion, laminectomy, and discectomy, depending on the specific diagnosis.
The Importance of a Comprehensive Approach
A multidisciplinary approach to spinal health is essential for effective treatment. A spine doctor Calgary often collaborates with other healthcare providers, such as neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, and pain management specialists, to ensure comprehensive care. This collaboration allows for a thorough evaluation of the patient’s condition and the development of an integrated treatment plan.
Lifestyle Modifications
In addition to medical treatments, a spine doctor Calgary emphasizes the importance of lifestyle modifications. Patients are encouraged to maintain a healthy weight, engage in regular exercise, and practice good posture. These changes can significantly reduce the strain on the spine and improve overall health.
Psychological Support
Chronic pain can take a toll on mental health. A spine doctor Calgary recognizes this and often recommends psychological support, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, to help patients cope with the emotional aspects of chronic pain. This holistic approach enhances the overall effectiveness of treatment and supports a patient’s journey toward recovery.
Patient Education and Empowerment
One of the key roles of a spine doctor Calgary is to educate patients about their conditions and treatment options. Knowledge empowers patients to make informed decisions about their healthcare. Educational resources, workshops, and one-on-one consultations can help demystify complex medical terms and treatment plans, allowing patients to feel more in control of their health.
Navigating the Healthcare System
Understanding the healthcare system can be challenging, especially for those dealing with chronic pain. A spine doctor Calgary plays a vital role in guiding patients through this process, helping them access necessary resources, specialists, and support services. This patient-centered approach fosters a sense of partnership between doctor and patient, enhancing trust and collaboration.
Tumblr media
Innovations in Spine Care
The field of spine care is continually evolving, with new technologies and techniques emerging regularly. A spine doctor Calgary stays abreast of the latest advancements, ensuring that patients benefit from cutting-edge treatments. Innovations such as robotic-assisted surgery, advanced imaging techniques, and regenerative medicine are reshaping how spinal conditions are diagnosed and treated.
Telemedicine
Telemedicine has gained prominence in recent years, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many spine doctors in Calgary have integrated telehealth services into their practices, allowing patients to consult with specialists from the comfort of their homes. This accessibility enhances patient convenience and ensures timely care, especially for those with mobility challenges.
Conclusion
The expertise of a spine doctor Calgary is invaluable for individuals seeking relief from spinal pain and related conditions. By employing a comprehensive approach that includes pain management strategies, lifestyle modifications, and patient education, these specialists are dedicated to improving the quality of life for their patients. As the field of spine care continues to evolve, patients can look forward to innovative treatments and a collaborative healthcare experience.
