Temari was pregnant on her wedding day: A Naruto Timeline analysis
[usual disclaimer: I love studying canon timeline but no one's headcanons have to be bound to it just do what you like bye]
Note: for simplicity, I gave years numbers, the Kyuubi attack/Naruto's birth are in 2000 and the other dates are based on that
Fact 1: Gaara is at least 20
In Gaara Hidden, one of the councilmen tells Gaara "You've steadily grown, and reached the age of twenty" and Temari and Shikamaru are in the process of choosing their wedding date in this novel as well, so the Wedding has to happen later than that.
We know from the data book that Gaara is from the same school year as Naruto, and born in January, so he is born in January 2001. (In Japan, the school year is from April to March of the next year and the children in the same class are the ones born during the same school year, not civil year. If you want to know why I say that data books are based on school years, not civil years, flick me a request and I will happily do so! Just not here because it'd be too long.)
We can conclude that the wedding is in February 2021 or later.
Fact 2: Shikadai graduates 15 years after the 4th war
There is no indication that I've found in canon material about when the Boruto events happen, but we can read in this interview that Naruto Gaiden happens 15 years after the last chapter of Naruto. (We will have to assume that "last chapter" here means chapter 699, not 700, or else all the new gen has spent 15 years being teenagers at the academy.) Naruto Gaiden opens with Shino telling the class (Shikadai is there) that the graduation exam will be in a week.
The issue here is that chapter 699 happens in October (Minato says happy birthday to Naruto in chapter 691 the same day, and we know from the data books he was born in October) and the graduation is presumably in March (again, that's one the school year ends, and Itachi is also said to graduate "in the springtime" in Itachi Shinden). So it could mean either 15,5 years later, or 14,5 years later.
The 4th War happens in October 2017 (Naruto turns 17 during it, that's the age the data book gives us).
We can conclude that Shikadai graduates either in March 2032 or 2033.
Fact 3: Shikadai graduates at 11
It is the minimum age as per the law (it is said in Itachi Shinden, this law is made shortly before the Rookie 9 graduate: “now that it was a time of peace [...] it was no longer possible to graduate in a short time [...] no matter how talented Sasuke was, he couldn't become a ninja until he was eleven years old”).
It is the age at which all the Rookie 9 graduate (they are said to turn 12 during the first year of naruto and 13 during the second, again, I can give more details about data book ages in another post if needed).
The naruto wiki tells me that the Naruto data book says he is 12 for the Chuunin Exam, but the scan I have of the data book do not seem to indicate any age that I can find?
So this is not 100% a fact that I have found a canon material number about, but it's the most logical possibility (he's not allowed to graduate younger, there's no reason he would graduate older, this is what happened to the previous gen, and this is what the whole fandom seems to believe, so, yeah).
Similarly, everyone seems to agree that his birthday is September 23, I have not found where that comes from yet, but I have to assume it does come from somewhere. If you know please tell me!
[Edit: apparently it comes from a bonus calendar in the Shounen Jump issue 6-7 of 2019 but I haven't found a scan yet.]
We can conclude that Shikadai was born in either September 2020 or 2021, depending on the graduation date.
Conclusion
If Gaara Hiden and the wedding were in 2021, Shikadai cannot have been born in 2020, so he has to be born in September 2021. If we imagine that Gaara Hiden takes place right after Gaara's birthday (the earliest date) and then Temari and Shikamaru got married on the month that followed, Temari would have been 2 months pregnant, and this is the minimum she could have been.
Your honour, they have sinned.

Tolkien Fandom Event Calendar
Recently I’ve received some asks about events/weeks in the Tolkien fandom, so I thought I’d compile a list of those that I know about. This is not exhaustive, and dates are subject to change by the organizers of these events!
Other blogs you can check out are @tolkieneventsblog and @tolkienfandomevents, though I’m not sure how active those are. The @silmarillionwritersguild Discord also has a channel dedicated to signal boosts for all sorts of Tolkien-related & general fandom happenings, which is another excellent way to keep up with fandom goings-on.
Want to run your own event? Here’s some of my tips!
If your event is not on here and you’d like it to be, let me know and I can add it :) Note: I will only add events that have announced dates!

Dates seen/mentioned/suggested in Moonlight Chicken, episodes 7 and 8 (ep 1+2, 3+4, 5+6)
Episode 7
Li Ming asks Heart out on a Valentine's Day date.
The calendar shows February 2023.
*There seems to be a mistake with the subs, since it should be February 2023, not 2022.
Since Jim met Wen since September 2022, they've only known each other for around 5 months.
Jim hands Li Ming the beer for 14th February, while presumably drinking the one for 13th February.
Gaipa’s dad died in 2020. (Is the suggestion that it was from Covid?)
Episode 8
It has been 4-6 weeks since Alan put his cast on.
Wen is informed on 5th April of his promotion.
Li Ming and Heart have a movie date on 5th April.
Saleng is meeting his in-laws in May.
According to some googling, the Thai school year ends in May, so presumably, this conversation happens in April.
According to Google Translate, it says travel on the date: 28 December 2023.

This is gonna be a kinda long rambly type post about TIT and Dan and Phil in general.
I can‘t sleep. Maybe it‘s my worsening sleep schedule these past few days (I blame Goro Majima), maybe it‘s the excitement of tomorrow. The fact that in less than 19 hours I‘ll be seeing Dan and Phil live. I‘ve never seen any content creator live and in person before, closest I got was getting a picture with Tom Felton a couple ears ago, 2018 I think. Sure I don‘t have any VIP or meet n greet tickets for tomorrow, but it‘s still going to be such a surreal evening.
I first started watching them during their gaming channel hiatus, maybe 2020 or 2021, I think my first video was their dog calendar which I found years after it was posted. I remember being so disappointed that I found them too late to get one myself. Now I‘m sitting here on my bed, my Dan and Phil and Cats calendar hanging above me.
So many times have I been too late to go to a show, a tour, a meet n greet. But now, finally, I‘m on time. I‘m so happy that I‘m going to the tour, and the first show nonetheless! I‘m hoping to maybe get one of the merch jackets they‘re selling, but I don‘t know if my mom will get it for me.
I‘m wondering how it‘ll go tomorrow, bringing my mom along. We‘re not native english speakers, and she struggles with it more than me, especially when the person speaking has a british accent, so that‘ll be interesting xD She also has no idea who Dan and Phil are, except the fact they‘re the guys on my calendar. She did once see me watching them in the livingroom, asked if they were the guys on my calendar, then said „They‘re together right?“ and I couldn‘t help but laugh. I told her no, they‘re not. They are both gay but not dating. I doubt she believed me.
They showed some fishnet tights in the new ‚trailer‘, which makes me think we‘ll be seeing Sister Daniel again. Makes me wonder how my mom will feel when she sees my reaction to Sister Daniel. I‘ve always loved her, I practically died when I saw the thumbnail of the Halloween baking video.
I don‘t know what I‘ll wear yet, but I do know I‘ll wear my two bracelets. They‘re those bracelets you‘re probably supposed to share with someone, being all one type of stone with one switched. I bought them at my favorite place in the world just about a month or so ago. It wasn‘t until like 15-20 minutes later, when I put them on, that I realized one was black/gray and one was orange. WAD colors. I didn‘t even get them for that reason, but I knew I was gonna wear them when I went to see them.
I practically begged my mom to get tickets. They were going live during my lunch period at school, and I remember texting my mom asking how it was going. She called me and bought them. I was so happy for the rest of the weekend. The fact that the first show was somewhere we could go, only about a 3 hour drive away, was almost magic to me. Like I was meant to go see that show. Like it was destiny. Crazy, I know.
A couple weeks ago, my mom got an advertisement e-mail by the venue. February 2025 they‘re hosting The Phantom of the Opera performances. They were expensive, but she got tickets anyway. I almost cried on the spot when she told me. POTO is one of my favorite musicals, and it is the musical I want to see the most. Sure, I love Beetlejuice and Heathers, but Phantom is Phantom! For most it‘s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
I kinda trailed off at the end there, apologies. I‘d be shocked if anyone even read this far. If you did, thanks. If you didn‘t, that‘s okay too. I just wanted to rant for a little :)
I hope everyone has fun at TIT, and to everyone going to the Antwerp show, know I‘ll be there in the crowd somewhere :D

on recommendation from @judge-tenderly on the randomizer:
Dimension 20 by Calendar Day:
all D20 episodes in chronological order of the day they were released. Note: this list includes the episodes of fantasy high junior year that have yet to be released, for the sake of pattern matching, though they are not in the randomizer yet. this inflates the count for the Q1 months marginally, though it will be corrected by the time the season ends.
my fun observations:
the only days with multiple episodes are: january 9th, june 24th, september 21st, september 26th, and october 24th,
october, january, february, may, and september have the most episodes; this generally reflects sidequest overlap with main cast seasons, while the other months lean one way or the other.
it also shows where the main cast seasons tend to be: fantasy high began in september and ended in january, the unsleeping city began in july and ended in october, fantasy high sophomore year began in october and ended in april, a crown of candy began in may and ended in august, the unsleeping city chapter ii began in november and ended in march, a starstruck odyssey began in january and ended in may, neverafter began in november and ended in april, and fantasy high junior began in january and will end in may.
in other words, there's intrepid heroes season throughout the year, but most overlap between them happens in Q1 and Q4, with less overlap in Q2 and Q3.
this reflects the more recent patterns of Q4-Q1 releases, with seasons ending in Q2, when the sidequests start for the year. the earlier the season ends, the more sidequests there are for that year.
technically this pattern has only been in place since 2021--the year began with the remainder of the unsleeping city chapter ii, and had four sidequests. 2022 began with a starstruck odyssey, had 2 sidequests, and ended with neverafter. 2023 began with neverafter, and had four sidequests. now, in 2024, we're starting with fantasy high junior year, which will end two weeks later than starstruck.
fantasy high often ends up grouped together because of how freshman and sophomore year were released.
there's a couple instances in Q3-Q4 where there are sequences of 4 or more episodes with Aabria, either as a gm or player
2020 had three intrepid heroes seasons, which caused the high number from that year. after, the sidequests gave more of a buffer between seasons.
there's more, but it's all in the sheet. happy watching!

On This Day in F1: February 12th
Present: Aston Martin Car Launch
History: 2020 Chinese Grand Prix Canceled
February 12th, 2024 starts the second week of car launches. Today, Aston Martin launched its AMR24 for the 2024 season. It is another car with lots of paint, though not as brightly painted as the VCARB car.
Unlike other car launches so far, Aston Martin did end up taking the AMR24 on track at Silverstone for its shakedown where both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll got to drive the car for the first time.
In 2020, February 12th was the first of many cancelations for the Chinese Grand Prix.
The 2020 Chinese Grand Prix had originally been scheduled for April 17-19. However, due to health concerns and the outbreak of the Coronavirus, the promoters of the Chinese Grand Prix requested a postponement of the event.
This occurred days before the 2020 Formula 1 season was postponed until early July and the world went into lockdown to combat the spread of COVID-19.
As Formula 1 returned to its regularly scheduled races following the 2020 season, the Chinese Grand Prix was scheduled in 2021, 2022, and 2023 as per its contract with Formula 1. However, it would be canceled every time due to COVID-19 restrictions put in place by the Chinese government.
As of now, the Chinese Grand Prix is scheduled and highly expected to happen on April 21. With a sprint also scheduled for that weekend, it is highly probable that after four years of cancelations, the Grand Prix will make its return to the Formula 1 calendar.
_______
Prev.: Feb. 8th — 2006 Belgian GP Canceled
Next: Feb. 13th — Ferrari Car Launch

Hi! I’m getting into Thunderbirds fics and was thinking about writing some myself. I saw that you ran a challenge at one point and was wondering if there was any event calendar the fandom is using. Or are there any events at all? I wasn’t sure where to find any.
Hi and welcome to the Thunderfam! :D
There is no strict calendar, but a few events do recur at will.
At the moment we are in the middle of Fanart Appreciation Month, which has occurred in January the previous two years as well. The idea being to reblog lots of artworks to give our artists some recognition.
February has been Fab Five Feb in 2019 and 2020, but was missed last year. I haven't done the call out as to whether the Thunderfam want that one this year yet. It is usually a six week challenge with a focus on the five brothers plus another character which changes each year.
Some time in March/April there might be a Easter gift fic event.
Somewhere between April and August there is sometimes a random challenge event. There was nothing last year, but in previous years there has been Sensory Sunday , Earth & Sky Week and an Olympics challenge.
We also celebrate each of the Tracy boys' birthdays - Gordon 14 Feb, Alan 12 March, Scott 4 July (?), Virgil 15 August (always a big one for me :D ) and John in October. Other cast members also get birthday celebrations at various times of the year.
September and October are usually taken up by external challenges like Sicktember and Whumptober.
We did have a Thunderfam November event - Fluffember - but last year an external event was picked up so Fluffember didn't run, but it did run 2019, 2020 and 2021.
December is left to Tag Team Secret Santa.
There have also been random other events over the past few years and I have no doubt there were others before I joined the fandom in 2018. Due to the sudden rise of Covid in 2020 we started International Rescue & Relief, a fluff prompt challenge which is technically still going, but I haven't mentioned it for ages.
Plus there are always writing prompts or question lists flying around that get picked up by whoever wants to play.
Thunderfam, if I have forgotten anything, please chime in. It is late here and my brain is usually pretty unreliable.
Anyways, welcome, thank you for asking. I hope you have fun in thunderfam :D
Nutty
(so do you have a favourite Tracy brother? :D )

Who is your best Welsh rugby men's player of 2022?
New Post has been published on https://thedailyrugby.com/who-is-your-best-welsh-rugby-mens-player-of-2022/
The Daily Rugby
https://thedailyrugby.com/who-is-your-best-welsh-rugby-mens-player-of-2022/
Who is your best Welsh rugby men's player of 2022?
The Welsh rugby player of 2022 candidates and who deserves your vote With the year drawing to a close it’s time for you to decide who has been the best men’s player in Wales this year.
As 2022 draws to a close it’s time to consider who has been the best Welsh rugby player in what has been a bitterly disappointing calendar year for the men’s national team. You can vote for your selection below, with the results being revealed before the year is out.
To help you on your way, two of WalesOnline’s rugby correspondents give their views on who should be crowned Wales men’s rugby player of the year from the six chosen candidates. The Wales women’s player of the year vote will launch later this week.
Steffan Thomas’ choice – Louis Rees-Zammit
It’s been a disastrous year for Wales, one which led to Wayne Pivac dropping his process as head instruct.
But despite the collective disasters of the crew, a few players did pull thru with their reputations intact. Nobody shone more brightly than Louis Rees-Zammit.
Who is your Wales men’s rugby player of 2022?
Dan Biggar
Louis Rees-Zammit
Jac Morgan
Tommy Reffell
Will Rowlands
Taulupe Faletau
The 21-year-old is pure box workplace and is one of most effective Welsh players, the other being Taulupe Faletau, who might be extreme contenders for a World XV.
The Gloucester wing is one of the deadliest finishers in international rugby and has been terrorising defences at each membership and check level all year, however Rees-Zammit is extra than only a pace merchant and has an all-spherical game to rival any wing within the international.

Steve Borthwick will kick off the upcoming 2023 Guinness Six Nations
by Brenda Reed on December 20, 2022 at 3:53 pm
New England boss Steve Borthwick will kick off the upcoming 2023 Guinness Six Nations with New Zealander Paul Williams in charge of his team’s clash with Scotland at Twickenham. The appointment is a first for the Kiwi official in the tournament since he took charge of the Scots’ March 2020 home win over France. Williams’ fellow New Zealander
Moana Pasifika begin their 2023 Super Rugby Pacific on Saturday 25th February
by debrambuhl on December 20, 2022 at 12:05 pm
Moana Pasifika begin their 2023 Super Rugby Live Pacific Campaign on Saturday 25th February against the Fijian Drua in a match that has been dubbed the Battle of the Pacific. Aaron Mauger is excited about the prospect of seeing the best of the Pacific on the field. Moana Pasifika has named a squad with 38
He also showed outstanding maturity for any such younger participant bouncing lower back from getting dropped for the Six Nations check against England to regain his place within the side a fortnight later.
2022 isn’t a year anyone in Welsh rugby will look back on fondly, with all facets of the game struggling from the national team downwards. Expect him to get even better under the tutelage of Warren Gatland.
As the 12 months ended in Wales prevailing just three of their 12 matches, costing Wayne Pivac his activity, selecting the participant of the year does not come easy. Taulupe Faletau was superlative as ever, while Tommy Reffell shone in South Africa.
But perhaps the honor belongs to Jac Morgan. Brought into the beginning facet for his debut in Wales’ handiest Six Nations victory this yr, towards Scotland, he additionally helped turn the game in Wales’ favour late on at Twickenham – albeit in a losing cause – via challenging England on the breakdown after coming off the bench.
Overlooked for the excursion of South Africa for not being big sufficient, he answered in addition to all and sundry should – coming off the bench to shine towards Argentina in Welsh rugby’ 0.33 and very last victory of the season, before crossing for braces towards Georgia and Australia.
With three starts offevolved and 3 appearances off the bench, you can’t help but experience Morgan turned into underutilised in 2022 – but while he became referred to as upon, he looked each component the Test player.
Wales 23 New Zealand 55
How many times have we seen this game? The All Blacks were just irresistible. Wales were game and to come back swinging after going 17-0 down – scoring one superb try on the way – deserves big credit. Ten minutes into the second half, it was only 29-23.
But New Zealand’s 55-23 win at the Principality Stadium was one displaying their ruthlessness when the opposition allow them slivers of a chance.
Ardie Savea was a tornado out there, while Aaron Smith was zippy in a two-try display. Jordie Barrett scored one, catching a Richie Mo’unga kick high above his head, and got another team try near the death. But it was the go-forward they created, allied with slickness of hands, that stunned Welsh rugby.

Bunch'a World Facts
So because I'm an idiot and only just now realized that you guys probably think me setting Anthony's birthday as "13/02" was a mistake or that it meant February 13th... it doesn't. Plus, the fact that I said the date of Adolescence's death was "November 1st, 3475". Lemme do a lil' bit of a dive. You can ignore this if you want but it does give a lot of context. The facts are under the cut because this is a long post
1) The year is indeed, 3475. This is because this is faaaar in the future. Things have barely advanced in technology. There's still no flying cars, because the real humans wiped themselves out over the span of 2020 - 3049. There's only this huge piece of land + A small amount of islands left. The rest is underwater and everyone speculates, making a whole spectacle of it. There are a lot of species of humanoids now, but namely what can be called "Neo-Humans" 2) There are very few countries left because the two main gods tried to remake the world with what land was left. (I imagine the conversation went something like; "Hey hon... what the FUCK IS THIS?" "What?" "WHY IS RUSSIA NEAR THE BOTTOM?" "Is... I-Isn't Russia always near the bottom...?" "LIFE, BABY, RUSSIA WAS THE BIGGEST, ALMOST TOPMOST COUNTRY-") I'll have a map made soon. 3) Every species ages weirdly as hell now. Neo-Humans age regularly... until they reach age 20. Every five years after age 20, is an actual physical year older. Take Brian. He's physically 32. In a calendarly sense or whatever the hell... he's 80 years old. So Tyler, the oldest, would be 95 years old, even though physically he's 35. So on and so forth. 4) The calendar is a 13 month calendar, dubbed the SAOL calendar. Saol is the Irish word for "Sun". Each month is 28 days/4 weeks. The months in order are January, February, March, April, May, June, SOL (the new month), July, August, September, October, November, December. It takes a slight bit to get used to seeing, but that's how this goes. 5) Holidays have moved, been changed, or been added. In order, we have; - Aquarius season, January 15th - February 14th. The festival lasts three days at the start of the season, January 15th - 17th - Valentine's Day, February 14th - Pisces season, February 15th - March 14th. Festival dates being February 15th - 17th - Aries season, March 15th - April 14th. Festival dates being March 15th - 17th - Saints Day, formerly Saint Patrick's Day, which is to commemorate any of the gods you'd like, March 17th - Easter, which lasts for two days, April 1st - 2nd - Taurus season, April 15th - May 14th. Festival dates being April 15th - 17th - Mother's Day, May 12th - Gemini season, May 15th - June 14th. Festival dates being May 15th - 17th - The entirety of June is Pride Month - Father's Day, June 12th - Cancer season, which starts on June 15th, is paused for the whole "Sun Month" (Sol), and resumes from July 1st - July 14th. Festival dates being June 15th - 17th - The Sun Festival, which is two weeks to commemorate the Sun Goddess and the Solar Eclipse God, Sol 8th - 21st - Leo season, July 15th - August 14th. Festival dates being July 15th - 17th - Virgo season, August 15th - September 14th. Festival dates being August 15th - 17th - Libra season, September 15th - October 14th. Festival dates being September 15th - 17th - Scorpio season, October 15th - November 14th. Festival dates being October 15th - 17th - Halloween, October 28th - Sagittarius season, November 15th - December 14th. Festival dates being November 15th - 17th - Thanksgiving, November 19th - The Moon Festival, which is two weeks to commemorate the Moon Goddess (Wife of the Sun Goddess) and the Lunar Eclipse God (Twin brother to the Solar Eclipse God), December 8th - 21st - Capricorn season, December 15th - January 14th. Festival dates being December 15th - 17th - Christmas Eve, December 24th - Christmas Day, December 25th - New Year's Passover, December 28th - January 1st To those of you who genuinely read this far, I appreciate you all so, so much

Dries Van Noten’s most memorable looks, as the Belgian fashion designer steps down
Many famous people, such as Florence Pugh, Cate Blanchett, and Margot Robbie, have worn Dries Van Noten's designs. After 38 years, Belgian designer Dries Van Noten is stepping down as creative director of his namesake fashion brand. "In the early '80s, as a young guy in Antwerp, my dream was to have a voice in fashion. Van Noten fulfilled his dream with the help of many supportive people. He now wants to focus on other things. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dries Van Noten (@driesvannoten) He will step down at the end of June. His last collection will be menswear in spring/summer 2025, in Paris in June. His studio team will create the women's collection. They have been working closely together for years. I have complete confidence that they will do a great job." This doesn't mark the end of the Dries Van Noten fashion brand The House that Van Noten treasures so much will soon announce a new creative director, and he has stated that he will continue to stay involved in it. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dries Van Noten (@driesvannoten) Van Noten completed a fashion design course at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Belgium in 1981. After opening his flagship store in Antwerp in 1989, he became a member of 'The Antwerp Six,' a group of Belgian creatives revolutionizing the fashion industry. The group included Walter Van Beirendonck, Ann Demeulemeester, Dirk Van Saene, Dirk Bikkembergs, and Marina Yee. Five years later, he debuted his first collection. In 1991, he debuted at Paris Fashion Week with a menswear collection. Two years later, he launched womenswear and became a regular on the schedule. Fashion firm Puig acquired a majority share in the brand in 2018. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dries Van Noten (@driesvannoten) Over the years, Van Noten has built up a reputation as a quietly experimental fashion designer. He blends the old with the new. He plays around with silhouette. This is mainly seen in the ballooning, oversized shapes of coats and sleeves. The design was showcased at his recent Paris Fashion Week show in February. Florals are a recurring theme in his clothes, and Van Noten says the flowers often inspire him in his garden. While Van Noten's work isn't a red carpet mainstay like some of the other major brands on the Paris Fashion Week calendar, celebrities make an impact when they choose to wear his designs. Florence Pugh was nominated for a BAFTA for her role as Amy March in Little Women back in 2020, and she brought a welcome splash of color to the red carpet in her pink and black Van Noten creation. A fuchsia dress-meets-cape was worn over a black mini dress, with the voluminous sleeves and bow detailing giving a subtle nod to Amy March's fashion. Pink and black were central to Van Noten's work in 2020, as Margot Robbie also wore that color combination to the London premiere of Birds Of Prey the same year. She paired her full black skirt with a feathered bralette, tapping into the trend for underwear as outerwear, and donned hot pink opera gloves. Cate Blanchett chose to wear Dries Van Noten to the Oscars in 2008 when she was pregnant with her third child, Ignatius. The midnight blue gown had an empire line for her bump and gold accents. Additionally, the sequinned flowers on the skirt were particularly eye-catching. Kirsten Dunst wore a floral Van Noten gown to the Baby2Baby Gala in Nov 2023. Noomi Rapace wore a navy and white floral print dress with statement red gloves at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2022. The dress, created by Van Noten, featured dramatic oversized sleeves. The economy is roaring. Immigration is a key reason. (Washington Post) Immigration has propelled the U.S. job market further than just about anyone expected, helping cement the country’s economic rebound from the pandemic as the most robust in the world. That momentum picked up aggressively over the past year. About 50 percent of the labor market’s extraordinary recent growth came from foreign-born workers between January 2023 and January 2024, according to an Economic Policy Institute analysis of federal data. Immigrant workers also recovered much faster than native-born workers from the pandemic’s disruptions, and many saw some of the largest wage gains in industries eager to hire. Economists and labor experts say the surge in employment was ultimately key to solving unprecedented gaps in the economy that threatened the country’s ability to recover from prolonged shutdowns. “Immigration has not slowed. It has just been absolutely astronomical,” said Pia Orrenius, vice president and senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. “And that’s been instrumental. You can’t grow like this with just the native workforce. It’s not possible.”
Extremism is US voters’ greatest worry, Reuters/Ipsos poll finds (Reuters) Worries about political extremism or threats to democracy have emerged as a top concern for U.S. voters and an issue where President Joe Biden has a slight advantage over Donald Trump ahead of the November election, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll showed. Some 21% of respondents in the three-day poll, which closed on Sunday, said “political extremism or threats to democracy” was the biggest problem facing the U.S., a share that was marginally higher than those who picked the economy—19%—and immigration—18%. Biden’s Democrats considered extremism by far the No. 1 issue while Trump’s Republicans overwhelmingly chose immigration. Extremism was independents’ top concern, cited by almost a third of independent respondents, followed by immigration, cited by about one in five. The economy ranked third.
The Supreme Court will hear Trump’s immunity claim in April (NYT) The Supreme Court agreed today to decide whether Donald Trump is immune from prosecution on charges of plotting to overturn the 2020 election. The justices scheduled arguments for the week of April 22, putting trial proceedings on pause at least until then. The court will decide this question: “Whether and if so to what extent does a former president enjoy presidential immunity from criminal prosecution for conduct alleged to involve official acts during his tenure in office,” according to the court’s brief order. How quickly the justices were to take up the case has been closely watched, as Trump has sought to delay the proceedings. Trump argued that appeals court judges had been wrong to rule that he could be criminally charged for his conduct as president.
After 4 Months of War, Biden and Netanyahu Are on Different Timetables (NYT) President Biden and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel each addressed the future of the battle in Gaza this week, speaking just a day apart but worlds removed from one another in a way that captured the essential tension between the two men after more than four months of fighting. Mr. Netanyahu spoke of war and how it would continue even if there is a temporary cease-fire to secure the release of hostages, just “delayed somewhat.” Mr. Biden spoke of peace and how such a cease-fire deal could “change the dynamic,” leading to a broader realignment that would finally end the underlying conflict that has defined the Middle East for generations. The disparity in visions reflects the opposing political calendars on which the two leaders are operating. Mr. Netanyahu has a compelling interest in prolonging the war against Hamas to postpone the day of reckoning when he will face accountability for failing to prevent the Oct. 7 terrorist attack. Mr. Biden conversely has a powerful incentive to end the war as soon as possible to tamp down anger in the left wing of his party before the fall re-election campaign when he will need all the support he can get.
Out-of-control wildfires scorch Texas Panhandle and prompt shutdown of nuclear weapons facility (AP) A series of wildfires swept across the Texas Panhandle early Wednesday, prompting evacuations, cutting off power to thousands, and forcing at least the temporary shutdown of a nuclear weapons facility as strong winds, dry grass and unseasonably warm temperatures fed the blazes. The fire has spread to at least 500,000 acres since it was ignited on Monday, making it the state’s second largest wildfire ever recorded. An unknown number of homes and other structures in Hutchinson County were damaged or destroyed, local emergency officials said. The main facility that assembles and disassembles America’s nuclear arsenal shut down its operations Tuesday night but said it would reopen for normal operations on Wednesday.
A former member of Germany’s Red Army Faction has been arrested after decades in hiding (AP) A former member of the disbanded left-wing militant Red Army Faction group who is accused of participating in a string of robberies has been arrested after more than 30 years on the run, German authorities said Tuesday. Daniela Klette, 65, was arrested at an apartment in Berlin on Monday afternoon. Investigators said they were led to her by a tip they received in November from the public, but wouldn’t give details. Klette, who had a foreign passport under a different name, put up no resistance, the head of Lower Saxony state’s criminal police office, Friedo de Vries, told reporters. Klette is one of three former Red Army Faction members whom police have been seeking for years. She, Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg have been linked to 12 robberies in northern Germany between 1999 and 2016, as well as attempted murder.
In Ukraine, Russia Is Inching Forward Death by Death (NYT) As the Russian military launched its offensive on the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka last fall, Ukrainian troops noticed a change in their tactics as column after column of Russian forces were ravaged by artillery fire. Russian forces divided their infantry formations into smaller units to avoid being shelled, while the amount of Russian airstrikes increased to hammer the city’s defenses. It was one of several adjustments the Russians made to help reverse their fortunes after a disastrous first year. But these changes were obscured by one glaring fact: The Russian military was still far more willing to absorb big losses in troops and equipment, even to make small gains. Russian forces have a different threshold of pain, one senior Western official said this month, as well as an unorthodox view of what is considered an acceptable level of military losses. Hundreds of thousands of both Ukrainian and Russian soldiers have been wounded or killed since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, including tens of thousands last year in the battle for the eastern city of Bakhmut. Another town to the south, Marinka, fell to Russia in January, after heavy fighting and more losses.
Kremlin Warns Against NATO Ground Intervention in Ukraine (NYT) A provocative comment by President Emmanuel Macron of France about the possibility of putting troops from NATO countries in Ukraine has prompted a warning from the Kremlin and hurried efforts by European leaders to distance themselves from the suggestion. The Kremlin warned Tuesday that a ground intervention by any NATO country would lead to a direct clash between the Western military alliance and Russian forces, fraught with potential dangers, and called the open discussion of such a step as “a very important new element.” “This is of course not in the interest of these countries,” Dmitri S. Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, said in comments to reporters. The warning came a day after Mr. Macron said “nothing should be ruled out” regarding the possibility of a NATO country sending troops to Ukraine, though he said there was no consensus on the matter.
A small drone flies into a damaged Fukushima reactor for the first time to study its melted fuel (AP) A drone small enough to fit in one’s hand flew inside one of the damaged reactors at the wrecked Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant Wednesday in hopes it can examine some of the molten fuel debris in areas where earlier robots failed to reach. Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings also began releasing the fourth batch of the plant’s treated and diluted radioactive wastewater into the sea Wednesday. The government and TEPCO, the plant’s operator, say the water is safe and the process is being monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency, but the discharges have faced strong opposition by fishing groups, as well as a Chinese ban on Japanese seafood.
Tears of Gaza father who lost 103 relatives (BBC) Ahmad al-Ghuferi missed the bomb that obliterated his family. When 103 relatives were killed in a strike on their family home in Gaza City, he was stuck 50 miles (80km) away, in the occupied West Bank town of Jericho. Ahmad had been working on a Tel Aviv construction site when Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October—unable to return to his wife and three young daughters because of the war that followed, and Israel’s military blockade. On December 8, a large bomb attack on his uncle’s house that evening killed his wife and his three young daughters—Tala, Lana and Najla. It also killed Ahmad’s mother, four of his brothers and their families, as well as dozens of his aunts, uncles and cousins. More than 100 dead in all. Over two months on, some of their bodies are still trapped under the rubble. Unable to hold his children’s bodies or be at their hurried burials, he still speaks of them in the present tense, his face motionless beneath the rolling tears. Stuck in Jericho, Ahmad is no longer sure if he will ever go back. “My dream was shattered in Gaza,” he said. “Who should I go back for? Who will call me Dad? Who will call me darling? My wife used to tell me I was all her life. Who will tell me that now?”
Strike on Palestinians waiting for aid in Gaza kills and wounds dozens (AP) An apparent Israeli strike on a crowd of Palestinians waiting for humanitarian aid in Gaza City on Thursday has killed and wounded dozens, according to local hospital officials. Dr. Jadallah Shafai, the head of the nursing department at Shifa Hospital, told the Al Jazeera network that around 50 people were killed and 250 wounded. He did not provide a precise toll. Fares Afana, the head of the ambulance service at Kamal Adwan Hospital, said medics arriving at the scene found “dozens or hundreds” lying on the ground. He said there were not enough ambulances to collect all the dead and wounded and that some were being brought to hospitals on donkey carts.

Chinese New Year
New Year Chinese Festival 2019 Chinese New Year 2024 falls on Saturday, February 10th, 2024, and celebrations culminate with the Lantern Festival on February 24th, 2024. Celebrations last up to 16 days, but only the first 7 days are considered a public holiday (February 10th–February 16th, 2024). Chinese New Year marks the transition between zodiac signs: 2024 is the Year of the Dragon, following the year of the Rabbit 2023, and the year of the Tiger 2022. (Traditions, Activities, Celebrations, Decorations and so on). 2024 is the Year of the Wood Dragon. Dragon is the 5th animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac signs, coming after the Rabbit and before the Snake. Recent years of the Dragon include 2024 (this year), 2012, 2000, 1988, 1976, 1964, and 1952, with the next Dragon year in 2036 (Year of the Fire Dragon). It is associated with the earthly branch symbol chen. Dragon is powerful, endlessly energetic and full of vitality, goal-oriented yet idealistic and romantic, and a visionary leader. They know exactly who they are and possess the keenest sense of self among the 12 zodiacs of Chinese astrology. Chinese New Year or 'Spring Festival' is a very important festivity for Chinese people everywhere, it is also China's most important festival and holiday time. Chinese New Year 2023 falls on Sunday, January 22nd, 2023, beginning a year of the Rabbit. Celebrations last up to 16 days, but only the first 7 days are considered a public holiday (January 22nd–January 29th, 2023). The exact date of the Chinese New Year changes from year to year, but is always between 21 January and 19 February. In recent decades, it has been the second day of a 7-day public holiday in Mainland China. In ancient China people used the moon to calculate time, and in the Chinese lunar calendar every month begins with the new moon. The festival has a history of over 3,000 years. Celebrations on lunar New Year's Day can be dated back to the ancient worship of heaven and earth. Over the centuries new traditions were added and celebrations became more entertainment-orientated. In 1967 food was rationed, and there was no money! Greetings were full of Communist fervor. Now people eat out for Chinese New Year, send e-money, and greet with instant messages on WeChat (the most popular app in China). Chinese New Year 2021 was the Year of the Ox. In popular Chinese astrology Chinese New Year is important... For Chinese people, years begin at Chinese New Year, rather than January 1! 2018: It's Dog year 2018 until February 4th 2019 (Chinese New Year's Eve). 2019: A year of the Pig will start on February 5th. 2020: A year of the Rat will start on January 25th. Every year of the Chinese Calendar has an animal's name. These animals are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, cockerel, dog and pig. The Chinese believe that a person born in a particular year has some of the characteristics of that animal.
Chinese New Year Decorations Chinese families celebrate the new year for two weeks and their main activities include 1) putting up decorations, 2) eating reunion dinner with family on New Year's Eve, 3) firecrackers and fireworks, and 4) giving red envelopes and other gifts. Chinese New Year merchandise Red decorations, red wrapped gifts, and red clothes are everywhere at Chinese New Year. They decorate their houses, towns and villages with coloured lanterns, flowers and many other decorations. They carefully clean the house and throw away old things. This means they are throwing away the bad luck of the past year. In many Chinese cities, from New Year's Day, traditional performances can be seen: dragon dances, lion dances, and imperial performances like an emperor's wedding. A great variety of traditional Chinese products are on offer, and rarely seen Chinese snacks. City parks and temple fairs are the places to go for this. Every street, building, and house where Spring Festival is celebrated is decorated with red. Red is the main color for the festival, as red is believed to be an auspicious color. Red Chinese lanterns hang in streets; red couplets are pasted on doors; banks and official buildings are decorated with red New Year pictures depicting images of prosperity. Most public decoration is done a month before, but home decoration is traditionally done on Chinese New Year's Eve. As 2019 will be a year of the Pig, decorations related to pigs will be commonly seen. Look out for red pig dolls for children and New Year paintings with pigs on. The festive period is one of the best times of the year to interact with Chinese people, and experience the local culture. However, it is also the busiest time of the year on China's transportation network. So, you might want to avoid the transport stress or seek out China's New Year culture, or both... It is very important for the Chinese to be with their families on New Year's Eve. Wherever they are, people are expected to be home to celebrate the festival with their families. The New Year's Eve dinner is called 'reunion dinner', and is believed to be the most important meal of the year. On this occasion the family eats a big, delicious meal together with many meaningful dishes. Fish is always part of the dinner, along with rice, different meats and vegetables. Each food has a special meaning, and the Chinese believe these foods bring good luck. Fish means an increase in prosperity, Chinese dumplings signify great wealth, and a Glutinous rice cake means a higher income or position. During this holiday period is also very common to visit nearby friends or relatives.
Chinese New Year 2019 Celebrations Like people waiting in New York Time Square to see the ball dropping, Chinese people have the custom of staying up late on Chinese New Year's Eve to welcome the new year's arrival. After reunion dinner, families normally sit together to watch the Spring Festival Gala, one of the most watched TV shows in China. At the same time, most people send WeChat red envelopes or short messages to acquaintances by phone. It has been a long Chinese tradition to set off firecrackers from the first minute of their new year. Fireworks have increasingly been added to the cacophony. From public displays in major cities to millions of private celebrations in China's rural areas, setting off firecrackers and fireworks is an indispensable festivity. On New Year's Day the Chinese wear new clothes to symbolyze the New Year. Red is a popular colour because the Chinese believe that it is lucky. Like at Christmas in other countries, people exchange gifts during the Spring Festival. In rural areas and for older people the New Year gift giving tradition is still strong, but increasingly younger people prefer just to receive red envelopes (by hand or electronically). The most common New Year gifts are red envelopes. Parents and family members give children the traditional New Year's gift called "Lai see" (lucky money), that is a red and gold envelope with some money inside. They are given also to retirees and customarily only employers give red envelopes to working adults. Businesses and public institutions in China take a 7-day Chinese New Year holiday, except those who need to have some staff on duty. However, most large malls, tourist attractions, public transport, hotels, and restaurants will open as usual, or even stay open longer! When the public holiday period ends, China prepares to go back to work. Life returns to normal and schools reopen on Feb. 27. In China people are becoming less superstitious, but Chinese people traditionally believe that the year's start affects the whole year, so the Chinese Spring Festival is a season of superstitions. It's believed that what something looks like (color, shape), and what its name sounds like, gives it auspicious or ill-fated properties. The Luckiest Things to Do at Chinese New Year are: giving money/gifts in lucky numbers and lucky red packaging with lucky greetings.

There are a lot of big Chinese communities outside China. In many big cities such as London, New York and San Francisco there are areas called "Chinatown". In these areas there are many Chinese shops and restaurants. Chinese New Year is a big celebration both for the Chinese and the local people of these places, and there are a lot of colorful decorations in the streets of every Chinatown. In New York City, the new year begins with 600,000 firecrackers, a ritual believed to frighten away bad spirits. There is a grand parade through Manhattan's Chinatown, with elaborate floats, bands, lion and dragon dances, Chinese musicians and acrobats. One last thing to remember: sweeping up on New Year's Day is considered unlucky. Don't sweep all your luck away! A very important celebration is the parade on New Year's Day, when there are a lot of spectacular floats. The dragon is an important part of the parade because people believe it is noble and lucky. In the parade a dragon can sometimes be twenty-five metres long and can have about sixty men move under its body and tail! People often throw money at the dragon and the dragon tries to catch it in its big mouth. Sometimes there is more than one dragon in the parade. If so, there is a dancing competition between the dragons. Lion dancing is an ancient Chinese tradition, and lion dancers are always part of the parade. Two men usually move under each lion. It has a big head and a long body. Musicians play the drums and cymbals too during the lion dance. There are also noisy fireworks. The Chinese believe that the noise frightens evil spirits. During the parade children represent the twelve animals of the Chinese calendar. Chinese children like wearing the costume of their favorite animal during the parade. There are also acrobats and musicians in beautiful costumes. Most of the costumes and masks in the parade come from China. The Chinese zodiac gives each year an animal sign.
