Here’s some unfinished Calder stuff, because after Crown of Dreams… not sure when we’ll see him again! Hope he gets a nice nap in while he’s stuck in a cursed helm 🌨️

Ultrus offering Calder his power, in a cursed deal Calder cannot truly refuse, is underscored by “The Ruins of Cragwater”.

In the Bahumias, Cragwater is mostly used in situations either concerning dwarves - linking it back to who ruled the city itself - or betrayals - linking it back to the fact that the city fell.

Easily and simply speaking, this one falls into the betrayals category. Ultrus will betray Calder, that’s clear from the jump. This helm will harm Calder. Power will always come at a price. And he could not refuse this power. The price is looming from the moment he puts the helmet on.

Murph choosing that song to go there, with everything you get as information about Ultrus in episode 16 alone, is perfect.

But then you learn more.

Cragwater fell, centuries before campaign one, because of the actions of its king. Ludwig Bronzebeard donned that mithril armor, in search for ultimate power, likely in hopes that it would bring honor to his family and to the dwarves. It ruined him. Destroyed his family. Drove him insane. Crumbled his city. Harmed his name so dramatically that his descendants are still trying to fix it.

Ultrus did something similar, making his deal with a war god in hopes of the giants taking Bahumia back from the small folk. In the end, it was not his deal to become a demigod that doomed him, but the ways he tried to achieve his goals. Regardless, his want for power doomed him.

Those similarities strengthen the logic of the music choice for Ultrus’ first offer.

But, weirdly, there’s more to it.

Cragwater falling led to two things that later became important. The first is the Bronzebeard family relocating to the city of Irondeep. The second is the rise of the City in the Clouds, Galaderon.

Galaderon was built atop the mountain Cragwater was inside. Near the end of Legends of Irondeep, we learn that the Green Knights of Galaderon were the ones to trap Ultrus in his own helm at the end of the giant wars. And, between the fall of Galaderon and Thiala’s cataclysm, the helm ended up in the Shiverblight board and, ultimately, on Calder Kildé’s head.

Trapped in a position of lowered power after Ludwig’s fall from grace, the Bronzebeards took up in Irondeep. They became important political figures, but some of them, like Wilhelm, were hopeful that they could one day return to power and acclaim.

This, of course, led to some horrific actions. Including both the destruction of Mount Forge and the assassination of Gemma Bronzebeard.

I’m sure you can tell where this is headed and many of you will be unsurprised by me doing this. But let’s turn briefly to Hardwon Surefoot.

Because ultimately, the Fall of Galaderon was a moment that shaped the Heroes (with the capital letter, as an honorific) that the Band of Boobs became. The assassination of Gemma changed Hardwon fundamentally. The destruction of Mount Forge gave Hardwon a Kingshammer, starting him on the path to unite the Godshammer.

The hammer that trapped Ultrus, that second time.

“The Ruins of Cragwater” is a song of betrayals and dwarves. The betrayal aspect made it an excellent choice for the first time we hear Ultrus. And on a whole separate level, when you add in insane context, Cragwater’s ruin led to Ultrus’. More than once.

So it’s perfect.

I shake his hand. Murph: (inhales sharply) You see the [whoosh] magical barrier goes up. You and Ultrus [whoosh] switch places. And Ultrus disappears, and you are left alone on this frozen plain. Jake: Calder… sits down, crosses his legs, and uh, starts to whistle an old familiar tune. Murph: As Calder whistles in the wind, you can just make out on the projection-- Ultrus entering the battlefield.
