Elderly Elves part 4.5: Calcelmo again, but Better
Tumblr media
My original Calcelmo design was frankly uninspired and lacking in the rizz department. Here's my updated version, including more cohesive new custom robes (and borrowing the arm assets from the Sotha Sil armor that came out recently) and a 200% more Dwemer monocle.
Also gave him a short haircut (he's a scholar who can't be assed to brush full elven locks every night) and a new beard (he is a Dwemer scholar, of course he's read some ancient beard manuals and must experiment with techniques.)
His armor will be an optional addon, but the permissions on the robot arm are clear that I can't make it wearable by players.

Calcelmo, to Aicantar: Yes, normally things need updates.
Calcelmo, pointing to various dangerous automatons and contraptions in the Dwemer Museum: If you update anything here, the entire system shoots itself to Oblivion and keels over dead.
Calcelmo: Stop updating stuff!

How would Taliesin feel about an Altmer that absolutely loves anything to do with the Dwemer?
-💎
This hasn't been discussed yet, but it's added to a list of future idles I have planned for Taliesin's opinions on NPCs.
He thinks Calcelmo is weird and feels Aicantar is wasting his youth on mundane trifles such as research into the Dwemer.
Then again, Taliesin isn't comfortable in Dwemer ruins due to feeling trapped and suffocating inside them. So this could just be his bias view on things.
Hasn't been brought up yet, but I feel this would probably cause some friction between other Dwemer enthusiasts like Remiel.

Calcelmo, complaining about Remiel making scientific discovery before him: "Now, I find all this very hard to believe. How did she discover this before me? I am an accomplished scholar and she's just a incompetent mechanic."
Gore, not letting anyone talk shit about Remiel: "You're not just wrong, you're stupid."
Lucien, not wanting to be chased out of Markarth again: "Now, wait just a minute-"
Kaidan, getting involved cuz he is not putting up with Calcelmo's shit: "And you're ugly, just like your mum!"

Bass: *just returned from oblivion to find he’s the last dwemer alive, now being fawned over by Calcelmo and his nephew as they get him settled into his quarters* the last I remember *pauses as his helmet beeps and configures his voice to be a safe volume* This room belonged to an engineer… Zippy, I think we called him… *looks at the stone bed frame* I’ve been gone long enough for the mattresses to decay… *picks up a small piece of fabric left behind only for it to decay into powder in his fingers* …
Aicantar: I?… Mattress?… you mean dwemer, didn’t just sleep on the stone slabs?
Bass: What? No are you an idiot? That’d be horrific for your body. You’d end up crippled after a few years if you’re not careful. We had blankets and pillows and padding. Materials like fabric tend to not hold up too well over centuries of neglect. They decay.
Aicantar & Calcelmo: *both standing there realising their own stupidity*
Bass: *helmet making a low whirring sound as he groans* maras mercy…

2nd of Hearthfire, 4E201 Dear Diary, As the carriage traverses Skyrim's rugged roads, memories of my journey flood my thoughts. Born on the 30th of Sun's Height, fifty years have shaped my life in pursuit of magical theories and Dwemer mechanisms. My mother, Maria Octavius, an esteemed enchanter scholar, shaped my relentless pursuit of arcane truths. Her guidance, a beacon amid the shadows cast by Torbert, a negligent and abusive Nord Battlemage and sorry excuse of a father. Maria, my unwavering protector, shielded me from his malevolence. Tobias, my paternal grandfather, stepped into the role Torbert should have embraced—a father. Their earthly sojourns have since ceased, bidding farewell to Maria, Tobias, and even Torbert in my adulthood. The Imperial City, a cradle of scholarly endeavors, forged my path amidst its corridors of knowledge. Oh, the marvels I unearthed from Dwemer enigmatic constructs, weaving their principles into contemporary magic and machinery. The accolades echoed, mingled with the discordant whispers of skepticism—a melody I've grown accustomed to. Romance eluded me, my focus on enlightenment shunning personal distractions. A solitary figure, ensconced within libraries and Dwemer gears, I found solace. My reflection in the mirror, an unsightly portrayal of excess, spoke volumes about my corporeal existence. A figure not graced by the standards of handsomeness; rather, a canvas painted with the strokes of indulgence and scholarly neglect. Weight, an uninvited companion on this journey, clung to me like the remnants of an arcane experiment gone awry. Yet, in the labyrinthine corridors of wisdom, appearances mattered not. The symphonies of my thoughts drowned out the whispers of societal judgment, leaving me to dance with the profound truths hidden within the pages of ancient tomes and the intricate dance of Dwemer machinery. The Great War's aftermath disillusioned me, seeking refuge in Skyrim's College of Winterhold. Here, I stand as the esteemed professor of Aetherial Physics and Dwemer Engineering, an anchor in this storm of magical mysteries. Sameth and Myvrana, my dedicated proteges, draw inspiration from my teachings. Collaborations with Tarakel, Aicantar, and the esteemed Calcelmo – both revered colleague and rival – elevate my scholarly pursuits. I tread the path of enlightenment, a solitary seeker pursuing the Dwemer's arcane legacy. The carriage heralds a journey physical and metaphysical. Skyrim's frost-covered bosom whispers the Dwemer's enigmatic secrets. Until again, Dr. Otto Octavius Aetherial Physicist and Dwemer Scholar

I love my old men, I'm the number 1 nelcelmo fan (bc I'm the only one who ships them. I literally made it up.)
these drawings follow the events of my unmade fanfic, so they don't really make a lot of sense out of context..

Fun Fact:
Taelinick is actually missing an arm and had it replaced with a Dwemer Prosthetic powered by a Soul Gems. He has to replace the gem every once in awhile or else the hand starts spinning out of control. It also has a focusing crystal located in the palm to allow him to case spells and comes in handy as a back scratcher.
This occurs during the fight with Alduin in Sovngarde when Alduin clamps down on Tael shortly before taking the finishing hit. When he returns, he passes out due to the pain and blood loss. It was pure adrenaline that kept him alive long enough for Cicero and Avriel to get help.
After awhile, Taelinick eventually commissioned Calcelmo to craft the arm from spare parts he had lying around. After the messy and painful surgery, the arm was hooked up to Tael and the rest is history.
His one complaint is that his shoulder itches. I originally had him missing his leg on the same side, but I figured the elf already had enough. He only wanted to be a farmer after all.

I'm playing Kelkemmeran as something of a sellsword, willing to do even the most absurd fetch quest for the right price, but I had completely forgotten how many NPCs talk absolute shit. He'll be ready for retail any day now.

calcelmo being a big dwemer scholar and yet not knowing how the dwemer disappeared despite all the evidence from morrowind is definitely frustrating (and I think I have made a post like that too) but something I've wondered about is what on earth was bethesda implying with that?? they obviously know what happened in Morrowind and make reference to it in other parts of Skyrim so ???
I think they really missed an opportunity to explore the concept of source survival and reliability and introduce this whole other field of consequences of the red year! Like how much of the events of morrowind's main quest is actually recorded? what do people remember?
we know that events from the previous games are written as books from different perspectives with their own biases (biography of barenziah/the real barenziah) but morrowind was really the last game that had most of its lorebooks specialised to its setting. as far as I can remember we don't actually get any centralised accounts about how the nerevarine defeated dagoth ur in oblivion or Skyrim, mainly cos many of the lorebooks are grandfathered in from morrowind. the defeat of dagoth ur and the fall of the tribunal are simply condensed into a paragraph and tacked onto the end of existing books with no primary sources. and we know that the red year absolutely devastated vvardenfell and the dunmer living there (also the oblivion crisis? never really mentioned anywhere) so there was a very short window of time for anyone to gather some primary sources and try to verify what happened. and even if they did they might not have survived the eruption anyway.
given the info available to the dragonborn within Skyrim it could be entirely possible for calcelmo to treat any theories about the dwemer's disappearance with suspicion, and say that we just don't know what happened to er on the side of caution! but! he never actually elaborates on any of these things and I think that's the thing that really sucks for players who either know about morrowind or don't want to be treated like an idiot!
if Skyrim actually explored the implications of calcelmo's dialogue I think there could've been a really interesting moment for the player where they might feel a sense of loss from having knowledge that can't be known by the dragonborn and shared with npcs like calcelmo! perhaps then playing multiple tes games gives the player a sense of existing on a cosmic scale!
and having that context would also make doing arniel's endeavor WAY more funny
