« Why did I let you do this- » Mumbo was pacing back and forth, looking at the sleeping form of his boyfriend in his bed, bandages wrapped around his torso « it was an awful idea. And just- not only the wing, you went out there before recovering! Because of course you did! I should've known- I should've tied you to the bed the moment you passed out after getting the painkillers- this is all my fault- »

« Love? » Grian's quiet, soft voice snapped Mumbo out of his thoughts.

« Yes? Do you need something? »

« Stop it. »

Mumbo stared at him for a few seconds, confused. "Stop what? Talking? Walking? Maybe my steps are bothering him and that's why he woke up Prime I should've been more careful-"

« 'S not your fault » Grian continued, after pulling himself up to sit.

« Grian, sit down, you still need to recover from losing a wing- » Mumbo tried pushing him down by the shoulders.

The shorter man just chuckled, shaking his head « You worrywart. We both know the wound isn't open anymore. »

« But it was just yesterday. And the more magic you use, the more you get tired out. » Mumbo sighed, sitting next to him. « You shouldn't have exposed yourself like that so soon. »

« You know I'm one for drama, I couldn't just make my public wait for me » Grian sprawled himself on his boyfriend's lap.

« plus. I was lonely�� just don't leave again, and I won't need to go out again! »

Mumbo laughed. « Only because you ask nicely »

« And because if you didn't, I'd burn down a building »

« only one? And here I thought you'd burn down half the town. »

« Do not tempt me, I just might do it! »

"Oh, mumbo you mean?" Scar laughed, stepping closer until Grian's feathers grazed against the wall.

"He called you here, didnt he?"

"he got a pretty penny for it too."

"Oh, yes!" Cub laughed, joining his partner.

"He was quick to accept our offer. We can be... very convincing"

So. Shop talk time.

Crystal will be my first, last and only full Sims 4 story.

After struggling for...six months or so now with a proper scene by scene outline for Gen 1 (GEN 1! GEN-F'ING ONE!) for Blossom, starting over and over and over and over and--I have 18 drafts for this thing. Not even my million word plus fanfic has gotten that many drafts I don't--I can't even. But I don't say that to flex. I say this to explain that, after yet another failed drafting attempt didn't work, I had a long sit and think about if I even wanted to tell this story and the answer is...no. I don't. To be completely honest, I'm sick of the Sims 4 and how it plays, how unstable it is as more and more updates are released, and I say that as someone who pirated the damn thing and doesn't update until absolutely necessary. So when I say the thought of having to use it for another 6+ years was heavy...well, yeah, it was heavy.

And I do mean 6+ years. I started playing Gen 1 of Crystal in April 2019 (we don't count Gen 0, that was two days and on rails) and it is now August 2024. Five years later and we're not done with Gen 6! 7 is ready to go, sure, but I still have to play > cap > edit > post > write dialogue for Gens 8, 9, and 10*! At its current pace, Crystal has enough material to last into the early part of 2027. Add three more gens to that and we're looking, probably, at 2030 before it's done. That's a long time. 11 years for 11 gens and one AU (which we also don't count that was on rails too--). Blossom would have been 13 gens and a shorter prologue, so 13 years. That is too long. That is too heavy. As much as I adore some of the concepts I created, I can't have this...thing clinging on for that long. I can't. it does not spark joy, so it will be discarded. Crystal will be finished. I am currently retooling Gens 8 through 10 to incorporate my favorite ideas from Blossom into it, but this thing is over half done and I will not abandon it. After it's finished, this blog will be retired.

If anyone wants to take my sims up for download and use them in their own legacies, please please please please please do so freely!!! That's what I uploaded them for, and when Crystal is done they'll go up, too. *Gen 10, Silver? Yes, my friend. Gen 10. A nice round number...and a nice dramatic ending where we began. :3 You'll see.

Time for random SftBT lore tidbits

Because there's so many little lore notes that didn't get included. Below cut because long!

Kaine and Kai (from chapter 15) are good friends! They worked together during V1 and proto-V2's production.

The external feathers mentioned in V1's segment in chapter 21 are a whole deal. That don't get mentioned because the only V unit who has the temperament to keep them nice and is old enough to even get them is Mirage. They grow in once a Viscera unit looses the brown markings on their internal feathers. V2 would theoretically get some around the time it enters hell, but those would get damaged or pulled off fairly quickly thanks to, you know, hell (Which is also why V1 doesn't have any during the actual game). The other problem with the external feathers is that, like real birds, Viscera units will try pulling them out if board/stressed. V1 was the worst about this since it got board easily. Feather pulling probably would have also been a problem for V2 if it had lived long enough.

Caladrius still has pilot bots! Post-war they are really more of a tourist draw, and there's only four, but BA-31 (the group) is still totally a thing. Mostly they are either used for airshows or to stand around historical societies.

On the theme of BA-31, British Pilots are one of the most common repurposed bots! But only if you're in Britain. The BA series is pretty well-liked and was a common robot to be assigned to. Which is exactly why assistant bots were based off them, lol.

Julyen Ryker and Baeri/Sleet both have British accents. Nayea has a Russian accent. Saavi and Elber are both Finnish, and Kaine and Kai are American. (Kaine has a Chicago accent, specifically. Kai has a generic Southern accent.)

Not every Earthmover agreed to Hell's request. Solar-powered Earthmovers were excluded from it, and some more strong willed blood fueled Earthmovers also refused. New Requiem and Midnight Point are not some of those Earthmovers though. Neo Eclipse was, though.

Nayea has a whole-ass backstory that was never mentioned. Mostly because halfway through writing I realized that giving any more screentime to one of the characters with an incredibly horrific (although offscreen) death was maybe a little cruel. Long story short, she was not born on New Requiem, but was brought there as a freshly-orphaned small child.

Back to Nayea's death, she's super dead lol. All the Earthmover handlers are various flavors of starved if they got trapped inside the earthmover, or mauled if they managed to get out of it. Nayea was mauled a couple days into the revolution after she wiggled out an air vent and tried to get help.

Just realized I should write out Mirage's full deal here instead of referencing the lore from the AO3 comments. Mirage IS a real person in this au, and she is Proto-V2, specifically. After Proto-V2 was killed by V1, a wad of its processors were set aside for further study. That wad of processors contained her Kernel, some (incomplete) memory banks, and a simulation processor. In Kernel mode, Mirage slowly built her own reality based off what she had been told the outside world was like (mostly through TV shows the engineers showed her). That's how S-2 exists in this world, lol.

Koda has albinism. It's not really mentioned because V2 doesn't care about appearances, but she looks mildly demonic with red eyes, pronounced eye bags, and white hair. The irony lmao.

Question ab ur Giyushino supernatural au !! What are the other pillars’ magic abilities/supernatural creatures? LOVE ur writing btw it makes my day whenever I wake up to it

I was waiting for this moment

Rengoku: Werewolf (born as one). His family has been werewolves for centuries. Rengoku has the powers you'd expect from a werewolf: supernatural strength, keen sense of hearing and smell, ability to turn others with a bite. Because he was born a werewolf, he's in control of himself even during a full moon (the moon makes his powers stronger). He can also turn into a wolf at will, often does so and sits by others with his tail wagging.

Uzui: Siren, and very smug about it. He can drive others into a trance with just the sound of his voice, and they'll do whatever he asks of them. Looking into his eyes makes his persuasive powers stronger, so it's better to avoid that. Uzui was lucky to be one of the sirens that have wings instead of gills, so he can also fly. Often mistaken for an angel.

Sanemi: Werewolf (turned). Sanemi was a normal kid in a family that had only one supernatural creature (Genya, who has phoenix blood). He unfortunately got turned when a werewolf attacked and killed his family. Sanemi has the same powers as Rengoku, but he can't control his wolf. Because of this, the full moon is painful for him and he needs to be isolated during it (Shinobu is working on a medicine to help him with that). He can only turn into a wolf during the full moon.

Iguro: Medusa, which is a type of demonic power acquired by contract. He made a deal with a snake demon a long time ago, which fused their bodies together. Iguro can freeze anyone just by looking at them, and just his presence can be enough to make someone pause for a few seconds. If the snake around his neck bites someone, it freezes them permanently, basically killing them.

Kanroji: Fairy. Kanroji has a lot of power, since she can create illusions, mess with people's memories, influence what they do with just a touch. But since those things are used to trick and hurt people, Kanroji doesn't like using them unless necessary. If she so wished, she could easily break someone's mind.

Muichirou: Witch (elemental). He draws his powers from cold/damp weather, and he can turn water particles in the air into icicles. When the weather is hot/dry, it makes him weak, and that's why he's often sleepy and unfocused for the months of Spring and Summer. He's known for using thick fog to get enemies lost (often making it so they'll fall off a cliff because they can't see what's in front of them).

Himejima: Caladrius, a bird of healing. When he touches someone who is currently injured or ill, he can heal them, but first he needs to take the pain into himself (including all the pain that would happen in the healing process). He can also tell if someone is going to die from an illness just by looking at them. His powers are the most mysterious, as no one has had that kind of power before; it's believed he was given his powers by god to protect others (so everyone sees him as their guardian).

Writing Progress

I’ve been super lazy and not doing my writing progress posts, so I am going to cover like the last 4 days of writing. I am still writing though, so that’s good!

Healthy Competition chapter 3 - about 1000 words worth of editing, so a bit less than half of the editing to get out this chapter.

Unnamed Overwatch au (the one where they are all mythical creatures) - about 400 words more, putting me at around 1000 words. Chapter 1 is entirely devoted to Angela and Fareeha meeting and coming to care for each other.

Also, I really need a name for this thing. I think I am going to turn it into a series for each major arc. First arc is caladrius!Mercy (think mercy with white wings and magic healing feathers), Dragon!sym, and Angel!Pharah (warrior angel of justice). Widowmaker is also in there as a vampire. Any suggestions for either the series or the arc name?

Fandoms you write for: At the moment, primarily Star Wars (as well as some original stuff), but I’m trying to get back into some of my BSG fic. Apart from those two, my prior main fandoms that I did a lot of writing for were Supernatural, ATLA, and HP, but I’ve done bits and pieces for MCU, miscellaneous crossovers with other things, way back when I did some Dragonlance and LOTR and Wheel of Time...

Where you post: At the moment, mostly AO3 for fanfic stuff. And my writing tumblr.

Most popular one shot: Judging purely by hit count on the stuff that’s been crossposted to AO3 (since that’s easiest to track) - for Star Wars, either The Magic of Midwinter or To his family, send him. Which, incidentally, was the first thing I wrote when I came back to this fandom, lol. Uh. Sanctuary also did pretty well, I think. Most of my SPN fic never got that popular, but some of my ATLA one-shots got a fair number of hits, as well.

Most popular multi-chapter: Precipice, by a wide, wide, wide margin, lol. Uh. Leaving that one outlier aside, Distaff is the next most popular, followed by These Three Remain and then Asajj Ventress and Her Tiny Time-Travelling Conscience. For my non-SW stuff, The Promises of Angels did fairly well for a very long genfic about a tertiary character who (at the time I wrote it) had been dead for five seasons...

Favourite story you wrote: GDI. I hate this kind of question, lol. Uh. I’m still fairly proud of Promises, which I mentioned earlier--at the time, it was the longest contiguous story I’d ever written. Precipice has its ups and downs, but I still love it and have no intention of leaving that AU/timeline anytime soon. The Devoted turned out really well, I thought. Looking back at most of the stuff I have out there, there’s bits I would change, to make things more cohesive/coherent/whatever, but I like what I did with a lot of my stuff. ...also, my AU outlines are a blast, I really should update one of them/write another...

Story you were nervous to post: Lord. Uh. Mostly the more niche/self-indulgent things (or...things that I’m concerned will come across as self-indulgent*?) and/or unusual formats--so, crossposting Ventress to AO3; some of the Jedi of Valdemar bits; the portions of Precipice that deal with Lavinia. It’s Like Deja Vu (All Over Again), too. I was waffling about some of the way chapter 2 plays out. Oh, and Sanctuary, mostly because I don’t hang out in the ST corner of the fandom very much so writing Rey was a little weird for me, but I think it turned out okay?

*Because, while I’ve long since decided to stop feeling guilty/ashamed of such things, I like getting good responses when I share my work??? And I don’t like getting bad ones. So putting that kind of stuff up in a place where it’s intended to reach a wider audience can still be a little nervous-making, if that makes sense.

How do you choose your titles: Oh, all kinds of places. Words that sound cool/feel appropriate, various quotations...I think I did a list on some of my title sources at one point...aha, here it is!

Do you outline: Not..really, no, lol. Like, for Precipice, I sort of have a vague idea of the Major Plot Points that happen in most of the arcs, but I don’t really have it written down anywhere. I had a kind of outline for Heaven on Their Minds, I think; and when I’m working on a Big Bang project or something else with a Deadline, sometimes I’ll have placeholder chapter/scene titles in there? (Like, in The Devoted, there was The Heist(tm), and Obi-Wan and Padme Cannot Ethically Seduce Anakin, and Bail is In Trouble, and Dramatic Confession Scene(tm), etc., but nothing like a Formal Outline. ...come to think of it, I do that with Precipice, too. But not usually very far in advance, just when I’m actually sitting down to organize the next two-three chapters/scenes/plot point/whatever. Oh, I do have kind of an outline for Jedi of Valdemar, mostly because it’s an enormous timeline and I wanted to get the order/relative dating/ages straight. But that’s not super detailed.

Complete: Uhm. Well, in SW, mostly my oneshots. These Three Remain is complete. Deja Vu is technically complete, but I might do a sequel at some point? The Devoted, I have more stories to tell in that universe, though the individual fic itself is complete. The Phoenix I actually do plan to write sequels to, and have them vaguely planned out (The Hercinia will be sort of two parallel storylines, one on the planet and one with Luke and Vader; or possibly three, since the two of them will be mostly split up. The Caladrius will bring everything back together, probably, though I haven’t worked all the details out.)

In progress: Precipice, Distaff, Asajj Ventress and Her Tiny Time-Traveling Conscience; in addition to the probably-continued AU worlds mentioned above, Auxiliaries and Jedi of Valdemar universes (Auxiliaries, at the moment, has only been posted to tumblr, not AO3). Some unposted things, such as our faces like a mirror; a few things in other fandoms (Serenissima, for one; I’m considering rewriting For Sorrow Sung and/or actually getting my notes for The Other Battlestar into some kind of postable fic format, but we’ll see.)

Coming soon: Uh. Well, like I said, our faces like a mirror; I’ll do something for next year’s SWBB; more in various established AUs; probably another AU outline at some point...

Do you accept prompts: Yes! Preferably at my writing tumblr (shadowsong26fic). I do prompt calls every so often (usually for holidays or for Bonus Fics celebrating specific milestones), and I’ll sometimes reblog prompt lists/memes and the like, but I am always open for prompts. It’s just if I haven’t made a specific call or whatever, there’s no promises on when I’ll fill it. I reserve the right to refuse prompts, if it’s something I don’t feel comfortable writing or something I don’t think I can do justice, but you can always feel free to send me an ask if there’s something you’d like to see from me!

Coming Attractions!

Because I skipped the last two months, lol...

I mean, this one is not necessarily “coming this month,” since I’ll be travelling for a couple weeks in the middle of the month! So I’ll have time to write, but possibly not brain, and I’m not 100% sure what my internet access will be like, so I’m tentatively saying there will be no posts between the 10th and the 24th/25th. If everything goes to plan, though, I’ll build up some backlog of stuff in the evenings and be able to post a bunch when I get back. But we shall see!

Okay, ever on we go...

Precipice:

So, I’m nowhere near where I wanted to be at this point in the year, lol. This arc has been...hm...not really flowing as much as some of the earlier ones did? I think at least in part because Fluff Is Hard, so that half is taking a long, long time for me to get out. And Saw can be difficult, so that half is also fairly slow-going, too. Arc Seven (which takes place three years later) should go faster. Leia has a Key Milestone to meet, Infernalis has things to do, and there’s a Spoiler that sets up a major plot thread for arcs 8-14.

Which, as a head’s up, will most likely be split off into a separate fic. Which I think I’ve mentioned before, but just to be clear. Partly for length, partly for timing--there’s going to be a fairly long timeskip of six years--partly for subject matter/format because there’s a key Moment that happens in Arc Eight (working title Escalation). Right now, the plan is to title this second chunk Protectors, but I might use Precipice II or something instead, haven’t decided.

So, anyway, fun stuff in the pipeline here! I might do another bonus fic or two at some point. I’m guessing Arc Six will be about twelve chapters in total? Depends on how quickly I wrap up the Saw & Ahsoka & Rex storyline.

Oh! Before I switch topics--on the subject of the bonus fics, having read Thrawn: Alliances...there’s definitely one I want to write, with Padme and Thrawn. But, due to potential spoilers, it’ll be a while. Which...I guess I should remind y’all that I tend to work in a blended/tiered canon, drawing on both Legends and canon content as seems appropriate. Also, I locked my official canon before seeing Rebels, which is why Ahsoka and Rex have pretty significantly different backstories. I draw stuff in from later-released contact as it suits me/the story, if it does not completely contradict what I’ve established for the AU.

(Incidentally, as for drawing in Rebels content/characters, I’m still going back and forth on how much of that I wanna do. As I think I’ve mentioned before, the timeskip between Part 7 and Part 8 includes the entire run of the show, and I already had Thrawn worked into a later storyline, plus Rebels would pretty significantly diverge starting with the end of S1/beginning of S2 anyway, so...there it is. There is something I’m leaning towards using Kallus and Zeb for, in around part 13/14, but we shall see.)

AU Outlines:

Let’s Go Steal a Crossover will materialize at some point, I swear.

Also The Mask of Zorro/California Gold Rush AU Fusion No One One Person Asked For. Which is a very long title but pretty much exactly what it says on the tin. I should rewatch that movie at some point. Not just for this, but because I love it.

Also, having read Alliances, for somewhat spoilery reasons the Pellaeon AU is back in my head with a vengeance. (I mean. Not that it ever really left because it’s a fun and somewhat self-indulgent one I pick at pretty frequently.) Anyway, I probably will write that one up at some point, but holding off for a suitable spoiler moratorium ‘cause some of the stuff that came up in the novel will/should be referenced. (...this AU, for those of you who don’t know, is the one where Gilad Pellaeon impulsively kidnaps a fourteen-year-old, one thing leads to another, and now Thrawn is working with the Rebels.)

Also also, at some point I should update Ventress and Her Tiny Time-Travelling Conscience. Because Past!Obi-Wan, Padme, and Palpatine should probably all weigh in on what’s going down...

Other Existing Fic:

Fingers crossed for Distaff and/or Auxiliaries. Because I am very fond of them, I just haven’t had much juice flowing for them lately, sadly.

Also, eventually The Caladrius? I think/hope?

New Projects:

There are THREE of them! :D Because I clearly don’t have enough going on, lol.

First one is Our Faces Like a Mirror (working title); AKA the first big chunk of a potentially massive “shadowsong accidentally fell in love with Bo-Katan and now feels compelled to tell her story” project. This one covering from the backstory civil war until she leaves to join Death Watch. Don’t want to say too much more, since it might be my BB project for next year.

Second is Bail Unfucks the Timeline (which lacks a working title). It’s pretty much an expansion of the AU Outline version. There’s quite a bit of negative space/gaps to fill in, so we’ll see when this comes in. (It also might be a BB project, IDK.)

Third is Untitled ObiAniDala AU Extravaganza. Based on a prompt from @obianidalasuggestion.

Timeline/dummy summary because I are Clever.

In another galaxy, this would be the year the Clone Wars began.

In this one, it’s the twenty-fifth anniversary of the fall of the Republic.

I’m still poking around at worldbuilding for now. Figuring out where Obi-Wan has been for the past twenty-five years since Bail helped him escape the Temple (and making this suitably distinct from Kanan’s backstory); working out Padme’s timeline; having fun with tiny Anakin and Ahsoka; debating whether to adjust Palpatine’s age for credibility, or have the subplot of him overthrowing Plagueis in the background...

Now, courtship narratives aren’t really my strong suit so I have no idea on timing for this one, either, but I’m having fun building it and it will come eventually.

(Also, it occurred to me--and this isn’t the direction I’m going with it--but this prompt also lends itself to a Dark Trio OT3 fic. Where Obi-Wan the Sith apprentice and Padme the clever politician are plotting to overthrow their mutual Master and rule together, or have already done so, and then Anakin falls into their laps, so to speak...again, not going there because while I definitely enjoy reading Empress Amidala AUs (and occasionally Sith Obi-Wan AUs), I am not at all confident in my ability to write one, and besides I’m having way more fun worldbuilding the other one. Just...IDK sharing as an example of how my brain tends to go off on Tangents, which is why I have many AUs of my own AUs and sometimes updates are slow, lol...)

This idea got completely away from me when I started throwing ideas at @midnightluck just Saturday to where it is now. I’m a very inconstant writer so it safe to say I’d rather people enjoy this than write a chapter or two then never finish it.
