Stranger Things: Flight of Icarus will be published on October 31 via Random House Worlds. Set two years before the events of Stranger Things Season 4, it explores Eddie Munson’s origin story.
The 432-page novel is written by Stranger Things staff writer Caitlin Schneiderhan. It will be available in hardcover, e-book, and audio book. Tracie Ching created the cover art. The synopsis is below.
Hawkins, Indiana—for most, it’s simply another idyllic, manicured all-American town. But for Eddie Munson it’s like living in a perpetual Tomb of Horrors. Luckily, he only has a few more months to survive at Hawkins High. And what is senior year, really, but just killing time between Dungeons & Dragons sessions with the Hellfire Club and gigs with his band?
It’s at the worst dive bar in town that Eddie meets Paige, someone who has pulled off a freaking miracle. She escaped Hawkins and built a wickedly cool life for herself working for a record producer out in Los Angeles. Not only is she the definition of a badass—with a killer taste in music—she might be the only person that actually appreciates him as the bard he is instead of the devil incarnate. But the best thing? She’s offering a chance for him to make something of himself, and all he needs is to get her a demo tape of Corroded Coffin’s best songs.
Just one problem: Recording costs money. Money Eddie doesn’t have. But he’s willing to do whatever it takes: even if that means relying on his old man, Al Munson. His dad just stumbled back into his life, with another dubious scheme up his sleeve, and yet Eddie knows this is his only option to make enough dough in enough time. It’s a risk, but if it pays off he will finally have a one-way ticket out of Hawkins.
Eddie can feel it: 1984 is going to be his year.
Pre-order Stranger Things: Flight of Icarus by Caitlin Schneiderhan.

This is everything the Stranger Things writers have posted publicly about the WGA strike:
TIMELINE
May 3rd:

Stranger Things writer Caitlin Schneiderhan tweets picture from personal Twitter account of sign from the strike that reads 'Pay us or Steve Harrington is toast'
May 6th:
Tumblr media
Official Stranger Writers Twitter account makes post on behalf of the Duffers Brothers. They have since pinned this tweet to their profile. "Duffers here. Writing does not stop when filming begins. While we're excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is not possible during this strike. We hope a fair deal is reached soon so we can all get back to work. Until then -- over and out. #wgastrong
Bonus:
Tumblr media
May 12th:
Stranger Things writer Kate Trefry posts picture from personal Tumblr account of sign that reads, 'Byler won’t write itself'
As far as I know, the two writers that posted on their personal socials are the only writers from ST that even have personal accounts that are public, whereas the rest of the writers do not.
What does make me take a pause though, is that, while yes they did post these pictures from their personal accounts, which is about as official as it gets, they also cryptically did not include themselves in said pictures...
This just got me thinking about how Stranger Things is quite literally Netflix and vise versa. They are practically one in the same, where one without the other just doesn't make sense.
While this conflict of interest might run deep for many writers out there fearing to speak out against their employer, for us, the consumers, the fans, we as a collective have so much more power than we realize.
In contrast to the writers, streamers can't just fire their consumer base sometime down the line, out of spite for speaking out. Without consumers, neither Stranger Things nor Netflix would be what it is today.
We have the affordance of being able to speak up the loudest of anyone. And so why wouldn't we take advantage of that?
There are so many people out there protesting: writers, actors, others in the industry and even outside of it who are also taking a stand, many who need support so that they can continue to fight in the upcoming days, weeks, months, without being deterred by corporations that are making them feel greedy for demanding a contract that at most, asks that they be paid fairly.
And so I want to encourage anyone that is reading this, but fellow fans of Stranger Things especially, who have so much power in this strike when it comes to getting Netflix's attention, to consider taking the time to do whatever you can individually + with the masses as a community in order to best support the strike.
Follow the Strike! If you're active on various social media already, please be sure to follow the official accounts advocating for the strike via Instagram (@writersguildwest/@wgaeast), via Twitter (@WGAWest/@WGAEast). Engage with posts from folks that are out there daily, many with whom you can find by following tags like #WGAStrong, #WGAStrike and #WritersStrike. Although most fans are not able to join in picketing themselves, we can at least recognize all of those out there's individual efforts and do our best to show that we're paying attention and listening!
Spread the word! Show support any way you can by sharing posts and articles about the strike, or even fun memes to inform others in a more engaging way. This is the official site for the WGA strike if you want to learn more about what’s going on before diving in! And make sure to stay up-to-date here as things continue to unfold!
Donate! The Entertainment Community Fund is endorsed by the WGA for anyone that wants to support those affected by the strike financially. And this thread on Twitter is an incredible resourse, as it provides an ‘easy, one-click, stress-free, accessible-to-all-budgets’ ways you can support folks on the front lines.
Also! Consider donating through this link for the Entertainment Community Fund, where the money donated still goes directly to that fund, this is just an organizing page for Stranger Things fans specifically! By allowing fans to see how much of an impact we make as a collective, in real time, this could encourage even more ST fans to want to contribute. In a best case scenario, if this GoFundMe were to reach impressive proportions of donations from fans, that could lead to news outlets reporting on it, which could allow an opportunity for even more eyes on the strike, while also even more importantly being able to provide financial support to those that need it.
Trend! On social media, use #StrangerFansforWGA to trend or even just to reach other fans also looking to come together to support the strike!
While I know this post probably wont reach anywhere outside of Tumblr, I want to make a point to encourage those of you that are on other platforms to inform fans in those spaces about the strike and what they can do to help!
Tumblr media
We might not all agree on everything, but I think we can agree on at least one thing... @Netflix & all major streamers and networks out there, who are still refusing to make a fair deal: PAY YOUR WRITERS!
In the mean time, if you're interested in working on different ideas for initiates we can carry out as a fandom, please reach out to me! I might only one person and I might not have all the answers and solutions, but I do know that with more of us working together, our odds of making an impact are much greater!
Over and out!

To Gareth, From Ronnie
A/N: This is based off the prompt for Day 3 of @corrodedcoffinfest- Day 3: Best Friends
Summary: Ronnie writes a letter to Gareth detailing the truth about being Eddie Munson's best friend. (Ronnie is a character from Flight of Icarus by Caitlin Schneiderhan, but you don't need to have read the novel to understand this piece!)
Word Count: 442
No content warnings other than strong language!

Gareth,
If you’re reading this, it means I’ve already left Hawkins. I told Jeff to put this in your mailbox for me since my flight leaves early in the morning; I wanted to make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into here.
It is not easy being Eddie Munson’s best friend.
Sometimes it feels like it is, I know- he can make you smile in an instant, he has a joke for literally every occasion. He never knows when to quit trying to make everything seem okay. He can talk his way out of anything, and no matter how long you’ve known him, his talent for getting himself into trouble then back out of it within moments never ceases to amaze.
But here’s why I’m writing you this letter- the real secret about Eddie.
He is loyal to a fault. When you have his allegiance, it’s for life, and by that I mean he would probably give his life for his friends if he thought it was the right thing to do. You’ve seen it firsthand; how many times have you found yourself in deep shit, only for Eddie to save your ass? Who’s the one getting himself beat up time and time again just so you can have an opening to run away? It’s noble, yes, but it isn’t sustainable, kid.
He can only get beat up for you so many times. I know it isn’t what you want to hear, but you need to stop being so fucking reckless. You don’t have to pick every fight you see an opportunity for, because from now on it isn’t just your ass on the line. Eddie’s going to put his there too, every damn time. Because that’s how he shows people he cares about them.
It’s how I know he cares about you, because I’ve seen him get more black eyes with your name on them than anyone else’s.
Eddie makes mistakes- big ones- but he always wants to do the right thing. Sometimes he’s going to think that the wrong thing is actually the right thing, so he needs…direction. Frequently. Hope you’ve got a strong moral compass. And a larger capacity for forgiveness than me.
Between Hellfire Club, taking my place as drummer (good luck with that, by the way), and Eddie repeating senior year, you’re going to be around him a lot. He won’t say it out loud, but he’s going to need you. He’ll have the rest of the younger guys, I know that, but he needs a right-hand-man. I think you’re up to the challenge… but hey, maybe I’m wrong and you’re a total loser.
Please prove me right, Gareth. For Eddie’s sake.
Ronnie

honestly being in the spn fandom has some advantages. for example i've learned to not give a flaming shit about parts of canon that don't ring true to me. so like if flight of icarus decides to make him straight or deny him the charm/relatability we love (that was most likely joe's invention anyway) the solution will be easy: simply disregard canon again.
(but i also don't think it'll hit as hard since i see the books in general as kind of canon-divergent anyway. i'm just in it for more eddie backstory from someone who's actually worked on the show so at least she'll have some understanding of his character. at any rate it's GOTTA be more readable than lucas's book, which was well thought-out but the execution was piss poor.)

Okay I don’t know whether anyone already noticed but. I just noticed.
The Eddie novel will be written by Caitlin Schneiderhan, who wrote the episode “The Monster And Teh Superhero” and was part of the writer’s room for the entire fourth season of ST.
And of ALL the authors of the six Stranger Things novels (Suspicious Minds, Darkness At The Edge Of Town, Runaway Max, Rebel Robin, Lucas On The Line, Flight Of Icarus) she’s THE ONLY ONE who actually was part of the Stranger Things writers room and involved in the actual season.
Which means she knows what’s been planned for ST5, she’s been part of creating Eddie’s character and she most probably knows whether and how his story continues.
Why hire one of their own writers for Eddie’s novel when they didn’t do that for the other characters? Sure, they want the novel to be a success, but they could have that with another bestselling author, too, if they have a little talk what they want to include like they surely did with teh other five authors for the other five novels.
But Eddie’s novel will be written by someone who most probably knows where ST5 is heading and what they plan to do.
Very weird thing for a character they claim will stay dead, indeed. Why go to that effort if they haven’t done the same for the alive, recurring characters who got their own novels?
I’ve answered an ask about the book, which I’ll post later, but this realization just hit me when I did research on the writer(s) and I needed to share this.

Medici Heist by Caitlin Schneiderhan
Tumblr media
A good heist is hard to pull off well. A good heist is even harder to write well--this is what all my years of loving and consuming heist-related media has taught me.
And so, when Medici Heist--disappointingly straightforward name for the book--landed on my digital bookshelf, I was skeptical. Heist books are very tricky things to write, and a debut author writing a historical fiction heist. Well, it could have been a disaster. But thankfully, in Schneiderhan's hands, it is absolutely NOT a disaster. Medici Heist is an engaging, adventurous romp through Medici-era Florence, where tensions are strained between the ruling Medici family and the working-class citizens and our characters are happy to push those tensions to their breaking point…and steal a whole lot of gold along the way.
The characters are deftly written and developed. Most of them are rather color-by-numbers and predictable, but they are colored in well and I can't say I mind. A heist is not about the characters. Or at least not mostly. I liked that there were distinct and sympathetic motivations for the characters, making their choice to engage in a heist understandable and sensible.
The setting was a bit of a letdown. I can tell a screenwriter wrote this--the lack of focus on what should be a gorgeous setting is forgivable and keeps the pace clipping along, but, as someone who loves setting descriptions, it did scrimp on giving us period and place flavoring.
The heist itself is decently written. Schneiderhan pulls off the various moving parts well, and most of her writerly slight of hands work to push and pull the plot and action where it needs to go. It was very cinemaesque in how it was written, and that is a compliment. I did think the ending lacked a bit of punch. The reveal, as it was, was a bit confusing and felt less like the "ah-hah!" than an "…oh…" Still, I can't be mad about it.
For all my critiques above, I will happily look for more of Schneiderhan's work, should she write and publish more. I did thoroughly enjoy my frolic through historical Florence at her hands and would love to go again.
Thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan Children's Publishing Group for the ebook ARC. All opinions are mine alone.
