WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2024 — CAIRO, EGYPT. Greetings from Egypt! We've had a long and stressful journey to get here, and we're both really tired. So I'll keep this short.

We got to the airport in Houston yesterday and found out that our first flight was delayed. What started out as adequate time in the Frankfurt airport to make our connecting flight, turned into the anxiety of wondering if we were going to make it, and what would happen if we didn't. But it turned out that the flight from Frankfurt to Cairo was also delayed, so we worried needlessly, which is how worry often works.

As we descended to land in Cairo, we both noticed that the whole city is the same color as the surrounding desert sand. Kind of a dingy taupe.

We were met at the airport by a representative of Viking Cruises, who ushered us and our small band of aging adventurers through the passport validation and customs process. Then we boarded a bus which would take us to our hotel. On the bus, we met our Viking program director, Salah, who will be our tour guide and certified Egyptologist every day. He was wonderfully organized and knowledgeable as he briefed us on schedules and procedures.

After going through another security check at the hotel, complete with metal detectors and armed guards, we were glad to finally get to our room. The Fairmont Nile City Hotel is gorgeous and opulent. Our room has a fabulous view of, what else? The Nile River! We will be in this hotel for three nights, with daytime excursions to those famous pointy things, as well as a mosque and a museum of Egyptian antiquities. After that, we will fly to Luxor to board the river boat that will be our home for the next seven days.

But for now, after a delicious bowl of soup and an adult beverage, we are back in our room and ready to get some much-needed sleep. Tomorrow's schedule will begin quite early.

For now, as always when we travel, it's been a good day.
