Here’s a thing I haven’t posted in full anywhere. I drew this for Team Liquid, to be an exclusive poster for IEM Cologne 2024 (The Cathedral of Counter-Strike).

I know nothing about esports and I have some moral issues with Counter-Strike, but Team Liquid were an absolute joy to work with and I loved learning about the drama depicted in this piece.

A few things from my end-

- The frame is based on the architectural plans for Cologne Cathedral.

- The horse statues were a late edition, based on the Team Liquid logo, which is a horse.

- The guy (played by Olofmeister in 2014) has wings because he is dead. He managed to defuse the bomb and win the scenario while standing in fire, which killed his character mere frames after he secured the win.

I just had a dream about CS:GO (Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, a game I don’t play) where I was on a large metal building with my team which was 10x larger then normal and then everybody stopped fighting and walked out into the middle of the map to watch a river that had formed due to the map melting because it was a cake. I thought this was boring so I left to go play Elden Ring (another game I don’t play) which was about an orc girl with 2 swords connected via chain and Star-Lord.

I think the main thing I like about Counter Strike compared to Valorant is how much versatility is ingrained in the mechanics. Like in Valorant, only a few characters have flashbang abilities, and they require lengthy equip and recover animations. It's really hard to get value out of them by yourself, so most games you end up following your duelist around and flashing when they ask.

But in Counter Strike, everyone can use flashbangs, and the timing is more generous, so you can get value as a solo player. But the really cool part is that the other playstyle, where you just follow a teammate around and flash for them, is still a valid and effective strategy. You can contribute to your team even if you aren't good at winning engagements.

And since all utility is available to every player, you can switch your playstyle up on a round-by-round basis. Emergent gameplay and inventing new strategies is such a core part of Counter Strike, and Valorant just doesn't have that same mechanical depth.
