I REALLY struggled to draw VM before the animated series came out (except Percy for some reason??) since most existing art of the characters just doesn't translate to my style properly. This was the first time I ever drew them and was happy with the results :))

Okay would LOVE to see some discourse/hear other people’s thoughts (respectfully plz no one be rude for no reason) cuz I HAVE SOME.
I have never liked the Raven Queen. The Matron of Ravens. I wanted to so badly! Her aesthetic? Iconic. The way she OUSTED the previous god of death? KILLED him? As a mortal? And she ascended to godhood? A total flex. Like damn fr. BUT
I can’t get over what she did to Vax. If she just hadn’t taken advantage of him, I could love her so much. But I can’t. My disdain has also grown the further into Campaign 3 we get and the more I read.
Some Reasons!
1. She took advantage of Vax when he was in a weak spot. He was struggling, depressed, and desperate at the sudden loss of his sister. She used this to make a deal with him.
2. She took Vax immediately after they defeated Vecna. Why could he not live out his life as her champion? (I do know that because of the Disintegrate spell, there was no body to revive him so this would kind of “go against” her rules?)
3. Why make Vax her champion? He wasn’t willing. Yes, he offered himself, but that was more so coercion. Consent should be enthusiastic! Vax’ildan was desperate and afraid to lose the ones he loved, so he made deals with a god previously unknown to him. We’ve seen that the Matron has MANY followers in Campaign 3. There were so many she could have chosen to be her champion. Who would have WANTED to be her champion. Why Vax? Are we to truly believe that in all of Exandria, no other follower of the RQ was fate-touched? (If that was her reason)
4. She also made him her *eternal* champion. (This is part especially where I’d love to hear others’ thoughts). Vax does not get to die. Not like most people. He is now stuck in that same limbo as the Raven Queen. Yes, he gets to shepherd souls to The Other Side. Purvan did. But Purvan GOT TO REST. He served his time, and then got to pass on. As of right now, Vax will never know rest, and I hate that she stole it from him. If Vax has died-died, eventually he would be reunited with his loved ones in the afterlife. Now, when they die, they’ll see him, but only briefly as he must go back to his ETERNAL DUTY. May I remind you that he did not ask for that position?
Also, doesn’t that kind of contradict her whole “death is a part of life” thing, having an eternal champion? Yes, Vax is now a celestial and he did “die,” but he never passes on to the afterlife. Some blurry lines there.
5. The Matron has punished Vax for visiting/“interfering” with his loved ones. In latest 4-sided dive, Matt clarified that the first attack on Zephrah/Keyleth, Vax showed up and saved her (that’s how Otohan knew he would come again). Matt continued that his actions were technically against the RQ’s commands, and that she punished him for it (we don’t know how). Now, Vax’ildan is stuck in a painful orb as a lens, and she has done nothing to help.
So that’s all I have at the moment. What do y’all think? Please share your thoughts or tag me in stuff cuz I want to read more on it. It continually bugs me that the Matron was lonely in her task (fair) and that she may have not realized that before ascending, but that does not mean that she should force Vax to the same fate/keep him to herself.
(Also, I think Gargo/Shithead may have been her animal companion? That will be another post though)

Perc'ahlia Week Day 1
Dawn/Treasure
My first entry for @percahliaweek!
Vex lay in her bed, staring at the ceiling.
She couldn't sleep.
Sure, she knew that she needed to get some sleep, but she was restless. She'd known as soon as her head hit her pillow that she wouldn't be getting much sleep. She prided herself on the accuracy of her internal clock, and she knew that it was late and that she had several hours before anyone would be awake and ready.
They planned to travel to Syngorn the next day, but Vex's time there as a young girl kept circling in her mind: the judgement, the ridicule, the scorn faced at every turn. As much as she'd initially been enchanted by Syngorn, she now felt nothing but contempt for the elven city. The only good thing there was Velora, and the possibility of seeing her little sister was one of the sole things keeping her from trying to turn tail and leave.
Vex sat up, shaking the thoughts from her mind. If she was going to be awake, then she might as well be productive. She pulled out her armour and some polish and started scrubbing at it, trying to clean it to the point that it would at least be presentable. And there was a tear in her cloak that she ended as neatly as she could, a small smile on her face as she remembered her mother's sewing lessons. While Vax had enjoyed them more and soaked up the knowledge like a sponge, Vex still knew her way around needlepoint.
Once she was satisfied (who was she kidding, she would never be satisfied enough for this), she set to fixing her hair, silently thanking Scanlan just this once for his vanity and need to have mirrors in every bedroom of his mansion. After she finished re-braiding her hair for the second time, she held her two blue feathers, deliberating about wearing them the next day, when there was a knock at her door.

Two for joy: Chapter 33
Tumblr media
"Is there anyone else who would challenge this proclamation?"
An unsteady silence, beneath the hymns of Pelor’s throne room.
Pelor has no eyes, unless His beacon of a face is but one. Vax’ildan feels His gaze shift to the left - still battering with its beaming, but at a new angle. He feels sunburned.
The gold of His voice is riches beyond fathoming, the priceless worth of a beautiful day. “And what of the one who accomplished my trial? Grand Mistress of the Grey Hunt?”
Vax feels his sister stiffen at his side. She hides it, beneath the Deathwalker’s Ward, beneath a sharply raised chin. “Am I not the Matron’s Champion?”
(He hears, for the first time, the emphasis of it. Champion, his sister. At last, or too late?)
“There is precedent, found in eons past,” Pelor afflicts, “of a mortal bearing the mantle of more than one. The Apotheon, Alyxian.” A tremble is shared by them, hearing a name of such power that even a god recalls it long after. “Brow beset by gifts of my sisters, three of them.”
This close, it’s obvious when the feathers of the Deathwalker’s Ward bristle, arching with threat.
“My apologies, Dawnfather,” says Vex’ahlia, “but I am unfortunately Hers and Hers alone. I do not think She would take kindly to my sharing.” She smiles as crookedly as she dares. “Besides - I don’t like being anyone’s to share. I fight for Whitestone and my family, not for any gods. I have no faith to give you.”
She clears her throat. “And - respectfully, Dawnfather… Keyleth asked, and offered.”
As Vex steps back, Keyleth steps up. Vax lets her go and almost wishes to feel cold.
Once more, Pelor booms: "A faithless stands to try and accept the Champion's mantle. I ask once more, is there any to challenge this claim?"
 Keyleth’s nostrils flare.
 “No,” Keyleth says, “there isn’t.”

Chronicling what I have and haven't watched so far, partly to keep track of things myself and partly to do my best to curb spoilers (not that I'm that great at avoiding them myself). Will update as I go along.

VM-related One-Shots: Grog's One-Shot, The Search For Grog, The Search For Bob, Dalen's Closet, The Adventures Of The Darlington Brigade
All of Campaign 2
MN-related One-Shots: The Mighty Nein Reunited (Parts 1&2), Echoes Of The Solstice
Most Battle Royales up to VM vs M9 (don't care much about spoilers on those I haven't watched though)
Other One-Shots: Liam's Quest, The Return of Liam, Liam's Quest: Full Circle, Thursday by Night 1 & 2, The Song of the Lorelei, Call of Cthulhu: Shadow of the Crystal Palace, Cinderbrush: A Monsterhearts Story, Night Before Critmas
Exandria Unlimited: Calamity
The Legend Of Vox Machina
Exandria Unlimited
Exandria Unlimited: Kymal
Candela Obscura Chapter 1 - 4 & the live show
Honey Heist 1
A Familiar Problem
All of Narrative Telephone
Watching:
Campaign 3
I usually watch new episodes on Friday or Saturday, depending on what time I have. No spoilers earlier than that please, but once you see me posting about it, feel free to jump in.
I tag new episodes with #cr spoilers for a week after the initial broadcast and #c3eXX with specific episode numbers for longer than that. Older stuff is tagged with the campaign’s party name/the party the character(s) in the post belongs to, which overlap sometimes.

Spoilers for Critical Role Campaign 3 Episode 34
After watching episode 33 last week, I knew tonight's episode was going to ruin me. But I didn't expect it would the way it did. Watching Imogens face as she dealt with the death of her best friend and someone she loved and treasured was horrible. Laura seemed truly heartbroken as she played it out. It never even occurred to me that Marisha would roll a Nat 1 on her death saves and Laudna would actually die. I was just so scared and worried about Fearne and Orym.
I also truly felt so sorry for Ashley, making the choice on who to save between 2 of the party members. If only some else had revify or if Sam had any spell slots left.
But most of all, I commend Marisha. Not once did she try to sway anyone in making the decision to bring her character back. In fact, she didn't even say anything about it. She just told everyone that she wanted to stay out of the groups decision.
And while I am extremely relieved that Fearne and Orym survived, I really am gonna miss Laudna. It's gonna be hard not seeing Marisha at the table next week until the party either find someone who can bring Laudna back or a new character gets introduced. The undead is now dead.

Hi! I’ve watched a lot of dimension 20 and never watched an episode of critical role, but I’m really curious about the cr miniseries with lou wilson, aabriya Iyengar, and brennan et al, will it make sense if I watch exu as a stand-alone? Is it more of a “you’ll enjoy it more if you know the world” or do I absolutely need to have watched some other stuff to even grasp what’s going on?
Hi! I had a similar situation when I first wanted to watch CR having not seen Campaign 1 and 2 but after doing some research I learned I didnt need to have watched any before getting into it. And fortunatly, EXU Calamity is technically a prequal to all the other CR main Campaign stuff so you dont really need to know much in order to watch. All you need to know is that the Calamity was a War fought hundreds of years before the begining of Campaign 1 and no matter what happens in the miniseries, its still gonna happen cause if it doesnt then the whole history of Exandria (the wonderful World created by Matthew Mercer) technically wont exsist. I will say there is a few nods to somethings that happen in Campaign 1 that I didnt completely understand but it in no way took any enjoyment or understanding from this particular storyline.
So in conclusion, no you dont have to have seen anything from past CR episodes to watch Exu Calamity. If you really want to, there are many videos, blog posts, articles, and even a whole Wiki dedicated to Critical Role where eveything can be explained in further detail if you really want to know more.
I'm also going to say that if you love Dimension 20 and its cast members, you will love CR, and youre gonna absolutely fall in love with Travis Willingham, Sam Reigal, and Marisha Ray.
Hope this helps and makes sense! If you have anymore questions, feel free to drop me a message and Ill help any way I can!!
(Edit: just going to add as well that CR streams first on Twitch at 7pm PDT on Thursdays and then up loads the episode onto YouTube on Mondays at 12pm PDT. I wait until the Monday upload cause of timezones 🙂)

Critical Role Campaign 3 Episode 33 Spoilers Ahead!
Not me just quietly sobbing for the past hour from the most recent episode of Critical Role. The thought of losing both Orym and Fearne is leaving me heartbroken. They're both my favourite characters in the party! I don't wanna say goodbye to them yet! I also don't want to wait a week to find out what happens. I cant imagine how Liam and Ashley are feeling about all of this either.
And what if they do both stay dead. Whos gonna tell Dorian?? Or even the rest of the Crown Keepers?? Or Fearne's family?? Or Keyleth and the Air Ashari??
But all that aside, it was otherwise a fantastic episode. It kept me at the edge of my seat for nearly 4 hours. And it was such an emotional roller-coaster, what with the seige and getting Treshi out and then the horrible boss fight with Ottahan. Matt Mercer, I salut you. You are one incredible Dm!

My #1 post of 2022
I'm only recently getting into Critical Role but I've been a fan of Dimension 20 for over a year now and watching Brennan GM for CR is amazing. His style is so obviously different from Matt and Aabria, who are both very talented GM's in their own right. But theres something in the way each player at the table gets so enthralled by what he's saying that is just so beautiful. The way Brennan tells a story, how he pitches his voice, every inflection on his words is just pure talent. He really is a born storyteller and I'm glad those in the Critical Role fandom who aren't apart of D20's and arent familar with Brennan get to experience it

Critical Role Word Crawl
A word count crawl from 2018? 2019? salvaged from the old nano forums and/or my own documents. Written as CR2 was airing, written as a means to intersperse watching/listening to CR with breaks to boost word count in november.
Critical Role has revitalized my creative spirit. That being said, I'm struggling to stay focused on my word count instead of the show. In my down time, I should be catching up on my word count, but all I want to do is watch those nerdy-ass voice actors play pretend for several hours.
This should be a spoiler-free crawl, based on episode structure rather than plot or character content. The crawl may read a little more like a drinking game than a chronological list, but it'll definitely build your word count. This crawl will work for either the livestreams or VODs of both campaigns. Crawl while watching an episode, or take notes and complete the crawl afterward.
Is it 7PM Pacific Time on a Thursday? Or are you settled in with a podcast or about to hit play on youtube? However you're watching, let's dive right into *Matt Mercer voice* the next episode of Critical Role!
Announcements: This is when our voice actors warm up their voices and get comfortable with their cameras. Let's warm up with them. Roll a d20 (or use an online dice roller) and multiply it by 10 – write that many words. • If you rolled a 1: write 500 words • If you rolled a 20: write at your own pace for 10 minutes (the average time of the opening announcements)
Intro: If you're anything like me, you could probably recreate the intro videos from memory down to Grog's axe and the snacks Ashley brings. If you're a new critter, don't worry – you'll see the intro at least 100 more times. Let's take advantage of this repetitive footage and sprint for the length of the intro. • 1:31 for campaign one • 1:44 for campaign two • round to 2 minutes if you're not watching along
Ability Checks: So much depends on a single die roll. A number of the coolest moments are executed with simple ability checks. Pick a character to follow. If you're feeling winded, try following an NPC like Kima or Avantika if they're in the episode. If you're feeling brazen, maybe try taking on more than one character. Note each time Matt tells them to make a check. • If the character succeeds the check, sprint for 5 minutes. • If they fail, double the word count from their last success (if they haven't yet succeeded, write 100 words) • If they roll a natural 20, take a break! • If they roll a natural 1, write 500 words (be wary of whom you follow; certain players sometimes have rotten luck.) • If Matt doesn't specify the roll as a success or failure and narrates middling results, roll your own d20. If you roll a 1 or 20, follow the steps above. Consider 10 or less a failure and more than 10 a success and follow the steps above.
Break: The break may fall before the major chunk of action or after, but it always serves as a chance for the players to calm down, collect themselves, strategize, and prepare for the next half of the chapter. Let's take a little breather of our own. • If the break begins with the DNDBeyond theme or Yev from BackBlaze, write 100 words. If not, skip this. • Write at your own pace for 15 minutes (the average break length).
Combat: Aaand we're back! Combat can be quick and action-packed or stretched-out and strategic. Is this a big boss fight or some random bandits? Use your judgement to determine whether it's a major or minor conflict. When they roll initiative, roll a d20. • Minor Combat (caught by guards, ambushed while camping, etc): multiply your d20 roll by the number of enemies the party is fighting, then multiply by 10 more. Write that many words. If Matt doesn't specify how many enemies there are (as in a hoard of undead or pack of wild animals), double your d20 roll before multiplying by 10. • Major Combat (involving someone's backstory, challenging the guard of a vestige, fighting a mythic creature, etc): write to the nearest half-thousand (i.e. 500 or 1k)
Death Saves: Things can get a little tense and sometimes take a turn for the worse. if the character you're following for ability checks falls unconscious and starts rolling death saves, try for a Fifty-Headed Hydra to help save them.
Conclusion: Whether they've stopped just after battle or right after a big reveal, we're still itching to see what happens next. Let's do a final stretch to quench the adventuring thirst until the next episode. • If the episode ends on a cliffhanger, write to the nearest thousand. • If the episode stops naturally, with the party making basic plans for what's to come, write to the nearest half-thousand.
Congrats! You've conquered the crawl, just as the party conquered their quest!
This is my first crawl and I haven't tested it yet, so feel free to offer suggestions or feedback. I'd love to hear what I could fix or how it's helped you bump your word counts.

Help, it's again.
Time to rewrite this introduction post cause a few things have changed :V
Hey there fellow Critters! My name is Rose, and this is my Critical Role sideblog. (they/he pronouns)
About me: I'm a queer artist with a lot of free time, but not enough functioning braincells to use it properly.
I like to draw/paint, play videogames, worldbuild, tend to my OCs, daydream to music - all that good stuff.
My timezone is Central European Standard Time. Most of the time I'm somewhat nocturnal, especially in the days surrounding new CR episodes, but my sleep schedule also flips around a ton and might differ from day to day.
This is my sideblog, risingroleakira, mainly for Critical Role content and discussions of adjacent series. This includes Candela Obscura and MIDST. For my artwork, visit my art blog, risingroseart ...and maybe drop some reblogs while you're there! (This blog also includes my critical role art. I don't update it very often however, so alternatively visit my Artfol - also not perfectly up-to-date but definitely better) For my very messy main blog, where I mostly just reblog random stuff, visit risingroseakira.
Critical Role related info:
When did I start watching?
I caught the first half of C3E1 as it aired, then had to stop watching and take a break for a while due to external life stuff. A couple months later I binged the rest of that and all the other episodes that had aired since then.
What campaigns/series have I watched?
Finished or up-to-date: > Critical Role C3 as it airs > 4-Sided Dive as it airs > EXU:Calamity > EXU:Kymal > Candela Obscura Arc 1 - Circle of the Vassal and the Veil > MIDST Season 1 Work in Progress: > Watched Campaign 1's original version of the Briarwood Arc, as I cannot watch TLOVM due to the visual violence that I can't stomach. > After several attempts over the past few years, I finally have a successful attempt at C2. I haven't finished yet, and I've very much slowed down (or rather, stopped for a bit and am now slowly progressing again), but as of writing, I'm all the way up to C2E128.
Will be watching as it airs: > Candela Obscura Arc 2 - Circle of the Needle and the Thread > MIDST Season 2
Current favorite player characters? (spoilers ahead for the stuff I've watched)
> Ashton and Orym. I love all of the hells, so they're all included in this list, but out of all of them these two are easily at the top. There is strength, but there is pain; there is pain, but there is strength. Like vines, we grow together.
> Caleb. I don't think there's too much to say here, we all love him. Easily my favorite of the Nein, no question.
> Fjord and Caduceus The former the only bitch (/aff) I actually have merch for, the latter an aroace icon hehe. I love them both
> Dorian. It's 🎶been a while🎶since we've seen him, but as most of us do I miss the blue boy. At the start of C3 he was my favorite of the Bells Hells, and now I just miss him so much. > ..Most of the Bells Hells party, really. Between the lot of them it shifts around frequently. Ashton and Orym are pretty much constantly at the top, but it's generally almost the whole group that I love. >Percival Fredrickstein von Musel Klossowski De Rolo III. that was from memory, i refuse to not use his full name lol Look, I may not know most of C1, but the Briarwood arc, his design and what we saw of him in C3 were enough. I like that bastard too much to not put him here > Cerrit Agrupnin. I love the entire EXU: Calamity party, but Cerrit is easily my favorite. The Brass Ring endures.
> August/Auggie and Charlotte The Vassal and the Veil and these two in particular mean so much to me
Current favorite NPCs?
Lord Eshteross in C3 was at the top for a long time. Imahara Joe and Captain Xandis are also high up, and I love Milo so much,,, and NPC-Keyleth, obviously. In terms of C2, well, who doesn't enjoy Pumat (plural). I also quite like Yussa. But, of course, the blorbo of the NPCs is Essek
Favorite characters to draw or paint?
Ashton, hands down. I haven't really gotten to draw a lot of characters from CR other than Ashton and FCG, but like. come on. How can you not love drawing the nonbinary punk rock. How can you not enjoy painting their colorful gem and crystal hair and golden cracks and funky eyes and- Anyway that's my introduction post! I’d love to meet some fellow critters - especially newbies that love the Bells Hells as well, seeing as I’m a bit anxious in these types of long-lasting fandoms and therefore more comfy with people who are also a bit new to everything. Still - feel free to say hi whether new or old fan of cr! :]
If you watch the Pixelist Podcast, I'm on their discord every Thursday and during other CR related streams, chatting in the CR text chats. Feel free to say hi there!!

I cannot get over Asmodeus’ clever use of his promise to Zerxus. Zerx was looking for a promise from Asmodeus not to harm humanity, for him to spare them in favor of harming those who had truly wronged him in the past, according to his story.
Asmodeus promised “I will never forget you.” He never said a word about what he would or would not do to humanity as a whole once he was free. He twisted Zerxus’ words to make it seem like he was listening to what Zerx wanted while really he’s just playing him.

I just want to say that I suspected that the Tree of Names was holding back the Betrayer Gods since we learned there was a Tree of Names. However, I was NOT prepared for Asmodeus to bust out of it like it was a pop out cake.

I'm honestly not sure if this was meant or a request? But I love Shadowgast as much as the next critter so here's my go at it.
This is the first time I've tried drawing two people together, and only a the second or third time I've drawn a hand, but for all that I think it turned out okay even though their profiles are a little smooshed. And Caleb's coat really got away from me lol.

The clear dice are liquid core from Urwizards, the blue ones are by Chessex but bought from Lindorm Dice, and I'm not sure where the other set came from because they were a gift.

With all the new fans coming in from the animated show, I’ve seen a lot of critters recommend Campaign 2 over Campaign 1, which I don’t necessarily agree with. I think this is a holdover from when C2 use to be shorter than C1 (definitely not the case anymore lol).
My personal recommendation is to start with the one you’re most drawn to--C1 and C2 are far enough removed from each other that starting one won’t ruin your experience of the other (C3 is a different story, but I’ll get to that). Hell, you can watch them at the same time if you want (that’s what I did in 2018).
If starting with Campaign 1: you can try starting at episode 1, but I personally found it difficult to get through. If you find yourself in the same boat, try skipping to episode 24. This is where I started and it instantly hooked me. Episode 24 is also the first episode of the Briarwood Arc, which is regarded as one of, if not THE best story arc across all campaigns of the show, and it’s also the arc that’s being adapted into season 1 of the animated show. This storyline sets up a lot of important stuff with recurring echoes throughout the rest of the campaign!
If starting with Campaign 2: this one’s easy; you can just start at episode 1. C2 starts 20 years after C1′s ending, and is set on a different continent, so there’s a lot of new stuff to explore with very little relation to C1′s events. The first 25-30 episodes do a great job of setting up group dynamics and motivations for the next 100+ episodes, and I look back on them fondly. This campaign is also longer than the first by 26 episodes (C1 is 115, C2 is 141), so that might influence which one you want to start with.
Campaign 3 is their most current campaign and is ongoing at the moment. As of posting this they’re 11 episodes in, with episode 12 streaming next week (feb. 3rd). There are a LOT of spoiler-y stuff from C1 in it, much of it integrated into PC backstories, including spoilers for where various C1 PCs end up, as well as prominent villains from that campaign. If spoilers like that are an issue for you, start with C1, then go into C3 (or C2; again, you can watch them all concurrently if you have the time). C3 is much easier to catch up on for obvious reasons though, so if major C1 spoilers don’t bother you, you can start there.
All C1 and C2 episodes are available on Youtube for free, and C3 episodes are uploaded to Youtube the following Monday after they premiere. CR now takes the last week of every month off from their main campaign to give the DM and players a brief break, and will stream a separate one-shot during that time slot instead (tomorrow, January 27th, will be their first one-shot of this kind). There is a massive backlog of content to go through (C1 alone is over 400 hours long) so it’s a bit daunting to start. Once you’re hooked in, though, you’ll breeze through it.

As creators, it’s important that we strive to create a positive relationship between our content and community while still retaining our rights. With this in mind, we’d like to share our new content policy covering how you can use our IP.
(you can click the link embedded above or click the readmore. there is a lot of text!)
Everyone at Critical Role is extremely honored and humbled by the interest our incredible community has shown in the stories that we tell, the shows that we produce, and our company in general. We think it’s pretty amazing that our fans want to create artwork, websites, and other works (“Projects”) based on our intellectual property (“IP”). Our IP includes any unique material our team creates — things like the names of our campaigns (for example, Vox Machina and Mighty Nein), our characters (for example, Grog Strongjaw or Beauregard Lionett), story locations (like Whitestone or Nicodranas), company slogans (such as How Do You Want to Do This?), as well as written content and all related artwork, music, etc. We are generally cool with Projects that follow the rules outlined below, but we reserve the right to remove Projects that, in our view, misrepresent these rules or use our IP inappropriately. We want our fans to continue celebrating our world and sharing their talents with the community, but for Critical Role (“CR”) to exist as a company, our legal advisors have suggested we establish some ground rules for how our IP can be used!
1. What can I develop with Critical Role’s intellectual property (“IP”)?
Free stuff for the community to view, with some exceptions. Critical Role allows you to use, display and create derivative works based upon Critical Role’s IP, strictly for noncommercial (except as specifically provided below) community use. CR reserves the right to use our sole discretion to deny anyone the use of our IP at any time, for any reason or no reason. If we deny you the right to use our IP, you must stop developing, publishing, or distributing your Project immediately.
In all cases, the use of our IP with your Projects must be appropriate for our Critter Community. Projects cannot be defamatory, offensive (including but not limited to anything transphobic, sexist, homophobic, racist, ableist, ageist), or harmful to others (as determined solely by CR).
2. Can I create a project that is commercial in nature?
You may not create commercial Projects, including any Project that (without a written license agreement from us):
i) crowdsources any portion of its funding; ii) involves a business or legal entity; iii) gates the content with a paywall (e.g., Patreon, YouTube Premium, etc.), unless it is also legitimately available elsewhere for free; or iv) involves the sale of merchandise utilizing CR IP
We prohibit the use of our IP in interactive games, apps, and downloads. Please do not take any part of our IP (e.g., character appearance, character abilities, maps, icons, items, etc.) and use it in a game or app for other than your own private, noncommercial use. We do not allow any Projects utilizing our IP to appear in any app stores, including the Apple Store or Google Play, unless they have a written license agreement from us.
No monetized novels, theatricals or the like. You are not permitted to write, produce or create any novels, theatrical productions or other adaptations that include CR’s intellectual property without our express written permission.
Fan fiction is generally permitted (and enjoyed!) by CR, as long as the content is not monetized and otherwise follows the guidelines of this policy.
You are not permitted to manufacture, promote, or distribute (for free or otherwise) any merchandise (such as apparel, game pieces, accessories, etc.) that bear any CR IP without a separate, express written agreement between you and Critical Role.
Critical Role, on occasion, collaborates with and licenses third parties for the creation and distribution of Official CR Merchandise. These agreements are separate from this CR Fan Content Policy.
3. What about passive ad revenue?
This is one of those exceptions we mentioned earlier. We permit fans to promote their Projects on websites, streams, or videos and passively generate revenue through appropriate advertisements, including pre-roll ads, ad breaks, and sponsor ad overlays. No inappropriate direct ads or sponsorships—we alone decide what qualifies as inappropriate, but if you won’t see it on Critical Role, it is probably not appropriate.
We permit individual fans to solicit personal donations or offer subscription-based content while livestreaming, so long as non-subscribers can still watch the live stream concurrently. In other words, you may have your Project behind a paywall, so long as the Project is legitimately also available for free in some other way.
Your use of CR Content must be transformative in nature. You cannot simply re-upload our content. Examples of potential transformative works include:
Animatics
Compilation videos
Remix edits
Added commentary
Music/ music videos
Cosplay content
Art / draw alongs
GIFs / memes
React videos
For longform CR content: Originally 2 hours or more in length (e.g., Critical Role, Exandria Unlimited, and One-Shots)
CR allows your passive monetization of under 10 minutes of content usage per episode
CR may claim monetization or execute an automatic takedown for over 10 minutes of content usage per episode
For medium-length CR content: Originally between 1-2 hours in length (e.g., Between the Sheets, Narrative Telephone)
CR allows your passive monetization for under 5 minutes of content usage per episode
CR may claim monetization or execute an automatic takedown for over 5 minutes of content usage per episode
For short CR content: Under 60 minutes (e.g., Handbooker Helper, All Work No Play)
CR may claim monetization or execute an automatic takedown, which includes any “clips” or “memes”
4. Can my Project make reference to Critical Role?
We’d love that! Just make sure that your Project follows the other guidelines in this policy and clearly let people know it is a fan Project and not an official CR Project. That is, you are not permitted to state or imply that your Projects are affiliated with, sponsored, or approved by Critical Role. You may not create a Project in a manner that could cause other Critters to believe that it is an official CR work. If you share your Project with others, please conspicuously include the following disclaimer (e.g., on your Project’s website):
Portions of the materials used may contain trademarks and/or copyrighted works of Critical Role. This material is not official, is provided for free, noncommercial entertainment purposes only, and is not endorsed by Critical Role.
5. Can I create CR-related video content before the content is available on Critical Role’s YouTube channel?
No. Please be considerate. So it’s clear, any posting or other unauthorized disclosure of CR-created content prior to its official release on YouTube (or an authorized media-sharing platform) is strictly prohibited. In regards to spoilers, even after an episode’s release, spoilers can ruin a fan’s experience and we always aim to avoid them. Please be respectful of others and do not deliberately push plot reveals on people who are actively avoiding learning about them. If you are releasing fan content after its official release on the CR YouTube channels, we ask that you please offer spoiler disclaimers (or appropriate hashtags) as a courtesy.
6. What about CR fan art that’s shared publicly during or after a livestreamed RPG broadcast and before the VOD is available on YouTube?
Boy, we love ourselves some amazing Critter fan art. We also want to ensure that artists are taking every precaution not to spoil an episode before its official release on the CR YouTube channel. Please ensure that your artwork is not audiovisual in nature and follows the guidelines set forth in this policy. Again as a general courtesy, please include spoiler disclaimers (or appropriate hashtags) whenever possible.
7. Is all content in a Critical Role video available for use?
No. Certain CR videos contain music or other content that Critical Role doesn’t own. Critical Role, at times, enters into licenses with 3rd party content providers to enhance CR videos for viewing. Since CR cannot grant you a license to use someone else’s content, you’ll need to get permission from the copyright owner(s) before using their content. If you include non-Critical Role music or other content in your video, do so at your own risk. Your video could be subject to filtering or takedown notices by the owner of the copyright in the original work.
8. Can I use Critical Role’s Logos or Trademarks?
Generally, no, and only in limited instances. Use of Critical Role’s brands, logos, character names, actor names, actor and character likenesses and other IP are only to be used in connection with the discussion of Critical Role works, Official Products and non-commercial Projects in compliance with this Policy. Critical Role expressly prohibits uses of its Trademarks to promote your business or merchandise. You may not register domain names, social media accounts, or similar stuff that uses any of our trademarks, trade names, character names, etc. without expressed written consent.
You definitely may not use any CR trademarks as keywords, titles, or search tags for products that are infringing or counterfeit.
9. Can Critical Role use my Project?
Yes. We want fans to create and share cool things with each other, and we want to remove barriers to sharing. Because you are using Critical Role IP, if we celebrate or spotlight a fan Project, or make something that somehow resembles a fan Project, by posting it publicly you give Critical Role permission to spotlight or share your Project with the world. By using Critical Role IP in the creation of your Project you give CR authorization to share your Project in any way at our sole discretion. Critical Role will always attempt to contact artists in these instances and/or provide proper artist credit whenever possible.
10. What if my Project is not covered here?
If your creative efforts are not covered by this Policy, you’ll need our prior, written approval before you put it out in the world. If you have any questions or creative content you want to make that isn’t covered by this Policy, contact us by sending us an email to [email protected]. Written approval is required for Projects that are outside of the scope of this policy.
If you don’t hear from us, it does not mean we approve of your requested use of our IP.
11. Anything else?
Yes. Critical Role reserves the right to change this Policy at any time with no notice whatsoever, but we’ll do our best to communicate any changes widely as soon as we can in the interest of remaining transparent with you.
Please note that we are constantly developing new content and creating new IP that will fall under these guidelines.
Thank you so much for your attention to this policy. Our main goal is to ensure that the Critical Role community remains creative and vibrant as it’s always been. Our content policy will protect what we own today for the long haul so that we can continue to create magic for all of you for many years to come. If you have any questions at all, please reach out to us at [email protected] or via critrole.com/contact.
