[Book Review] Talking to Spirits by Sterling Moon
Sterling Moon's new book, Talking to Spirits, focuses on mediumship in all forms. Now, medium isn't a term I'd ever have used for myself. I always associate it with ghosts. Ghosts aren't really part of my spiritual life right now.
I have spirit companions, but they haven't ever been "alive" in the usual human sense. Quite a few are thoughtforms or egregores, but not ghosts. I've made altars for ancestors, the mighty dead, loved ones, etc... but I don't converse with them. Not like that.
I'm a spiritworker, in other words, but I don't talk to the dead. I venerate them, but I don't work with them. It doesn't call to me (for personal reasons).
Still, I figured I'd read this, and pick up some broad techniques for spirit communication. The author's personal definition of mediumship includes all spirit communication, not only departed human spirits. Much of the book does focus on ghosts, but, as noted, you can apply it elsewhere too.
I’d consider this book to be good for intermediate practitioners. A lot of what Sterling Moon teaches here builds upon foundational magical skills. You don't have to master those first, but you need some familiarity.
If you don’t find journaling comfortable or worthwhile, this might be one to skip. Almost all the exercises rely on journaling in some respect. You can adapt them to pure reflection, but to get the most from this book, you should journal.
The author talks about her journey towards greater understanding of her gifts. She's frank in her admission that her own path hasn't always been easy. This will resonate with a lot of us who've had similar struggles, especially these past few years.
Sterling Moon discusses how COVID19 affected her spiritual community and herself. It's good to see authors point out the effects of collective traumas on our practices. This kind of community shadow work is necessary, but rare. This is my favorite aspect of this book.
Some authors push a “do what feels right” approach to the point of leaving out what might be helpful advice. Sterling Moon carefully doesn’t do that, though.
Here's an example. She says that you shouldn't keep an ancestor altar with a partner (unless you have children). She explains her reasoning for this, and I ended up agreeing. I appreciate the bluntness; it even comes through in the writing style.
There’s the sense of “yes, you can do what feels right, but here is what I do, why, and what happens if I do it.”
This book actually addresses the issue of problematic ancestors, at least somewhat. The author believes that spirits sometimes can find ways to heal and grow after death. In other words, they might mend their ways beyond the grave. Some won't, of course, and that's acknowledged, too.
Sterling Moon has a nuanced take on the whole thing and how to handle the bad guys in your family tree. I don't have experience with this issue in ancestor worship, though, so I can't really speak about it. This book has a lot to say about intergenerational trauma and the spirit world, too - a good conversation to be having.
Having finished the book, I've still got no desire to work with ghosts. I didn't expect reading one book to change that. The subject (from a sort of armchair perspective) definitely interests me more now. I'd like to have read more about spirits potentially healing after death, but that's a huge subject. It could fill its own book.
I disagreed a bit with some of the author's metaphysics. That's beyond the scope of this review, though. I still enjoyed reading about it, and much of the book is still useful. The book presents a toolkit that leaves room for the reader’s own paradigm.
This approach has strengths and weaknesses. On one hand, it’s adaptable and fluid. But, it assumes a reader who's ready to fill in the blanks. Again, this isn't a book for beginners, exactly.
I’ve never been a particular fan of Spiritualism or physical mediumship. The book gives a short summary of the Fox Sisters incident. It also gives Sterling Moon’s theories about what might’ve actually been going on. It was a novel, interesting perspective.
It didn’t change my (skeptical) views on Spiritualism and physical mediumship. It made me a bit more sympathetic towards the Fox sisters themselves, though.
There's a section on “conjured spirits." That would be Sterling Moon's term for any spirit created by humans. There's a cool summary of the Philip Experiment, where a group "created" a ghost (named Phil). I won't spoil things, but it's one of many interesting anecdotes in this book.
I like that the author addresses this topic. For whatever reason, these created spirits seem more common nowadays. Witches might do well to learn to work with them. Working with "conjured spirits" has been part of my practices since the early 2000s.
I give this book three out of five stars. It's not all that accessible for newbies, but does it need to be? I'm not sure. I know that not every book needs to be designed for newbies.
I recommend it for the intermediate occult practitioner whose done some work with spirits. If you want to deepen spiritwork practices, this book can help.
Thanks to NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book for review purposes.

My UnderGrad Dissertation!
Okay I’ve actually processed that I submitted it now so lets talk about it!
(yes i submitted it with the border leave me be)
Topic:
I have a background (and interest) in childcare and teaching, and since the pandemic have noticed certain behavioural changes in children returning into KS2, along with marked language and literacy difficulties. I wanted to compile a comprehensive list on all the different ways COVID19-related factors may have effected language and literacy development then side-eye the UK Department of Education for not taking proper action to help these kids improve before the attainment gaps get out of control. This topic was pretty personal to me which really motivated my research: these kids really need some help!
Some ways in which COVID19 has affected child language:
- Face Masks acting as low-pass frequency filters and obscuring articulators, therefore making building phoneme/grapheme correspondences very difficult
- Isolation meant no socialisation with other children; pragmatic talk and self expression abilities took a huge hit
- Reading comprehension absolutely plummeted outside of school by 66% !!
- Distance learning means children ‘tunnel in’ on their devices which makes their brain block out any stimuli occurring around them, such as speech
Findings:
tdlr: COVID19 has messed up attainment in KS2 literacy pretty badly, UK Government needs to pull their finger out and reform intervention methods in schools (using the suggestions I made ;) )
We already know the UK school system is a hot mess, but when it comes to intervention methods they fund nothing that will cover the novel language issues associated with the pandemic and 3 years on show no signs of doing anything of their own accord. These kids need to be put back on track quickly else they’ll suffer some serious language issues down the line. After evaluating the interventions on offer for their applicability to the “COVID cohort” (I love alliteration) I suggested some reforms/additions to certain schemes that will theoretically fill in the numerous gaps left by the current standard system.
Honestly writing this was traumatic but I’d do it again! Would love to hear what other people did their dissertations on!

My 2023 started in the State of North Carolina at the casino. It was not too bad! I won a total of$86 dollars from playing the slots. I spent a total of 15 days in Charlotte NC. I was spending time with my family members and friends in the Charlotte, NC Area. I left Charlotte NC on Thursday January 13, 2023 headed back to Dayton, Ohio. The month of January in the State of Ohio was cold outside for a total of 38 days. I had a few doctors appointments during the month of January of 2023.

2023 overall was not too bad. I didn't catch COVID19. I will promise everyone that I will not bring any excess baggage from Last year to this year. My motto is For the Battle is not yours but God's. I will not argue with my family members and friends anymore in life. I am getting too old to be fighting Chaps and their parents. I will admit that I did go to the hospital each month for the past 9 months. I want to inform all of you that my friend called me indecisive. Is this true about me? Please let me know because I am going to Weed and Seed in 2024. I still have a lot of things to throw away from my apartment.

Next, I want to inform all of you that I am going to stay away from negative attitude and people. I don't have time to dwell on the past all of the time. I have to put things into perspective. I want to inform all of you that I will not argue with anyone else or use any Vulgarity and filthy language out of my mouth. I am going to spend a lot of time writing about my personal indecisive behavior. I know that my oldest niece want to fistfight me. I do not put my hands on females. If you have a beef with me, I am going to settle it inside of the Courtroom at the Dayton Montgomery County Common Pleas Court. Man or Woman, if you put your hands on me, I am going to have you locked up. I do not have time for rhetoric from anyone in 2024. That is why I have two AA Sponsors. I do not have time to argue with anyone over petty mess.
Further, this is going to be a very good year for me because I will not put up with nonsense from anyone. I am getting older right now. I am suffering from Schizoid Affective Disorder and Schizophrenia right now. I also suffer from Type 2 Diabetes Full Blown. I am too old to go to jail over another person's nonsense. I am going to spend more time reading the Bible and attending church on a regular basis. I am going to spend a lot of time at the library each day and go to the House of Bread to eat. My Uncle Johnnie Lee Hopkins died last week and I have to act like the oldest Child in the family. I will refuse any foods that have onions pineapple coconut grapefruit mushrooms and tomatoes. I cannot eat shrimp and crab meat anymore. I will not eat cake that have nuts on it. I will not eat anything that has onions period. I am going through a period of mourning over my uncle.
Finally, I am going to say my prayers and read the Bible every day of the week. I am going to do some research and service work for the AA Fellowship. My year in review is messed up. The reason why is because I have to learn how to write all over again. I am going to teach myself how to write a blog post and read the Bible without any interruptions. Whatever is going on with me and my adversaries, God will have to work things out. I am a 58 years old man who has a lot of common Sense. My IQ is really higher than average. I know that I am not perfect. I am going to start visiting Toledo Ohio again. I need to learn how to listen to Jesus Christ and God. I need to learn how to listen to other God Fearing People. I love my hometown of Dayton, Ohio. I know that people have changed a lot since 2010. My nieces and nephews think that they can defeat me with their own fist. I will send you to jail if you bother me again. This so called Mind Control Device better be for real. I am too old to be acting like a child. I can love you and help you simultaneously. It is your choice. I will no longer jump to conclusions about anything anymore. I will not commit suicide anymore. If my adversaries see me with their own eyes, it is best that we stay away from each other. As far as a relationship with a woman is concerned, I am going to allow God to bless me with a decent female friend. I am an analytical person. Even though I abhore mathematics. I know how to count my money when I receive it.
In Conclusion, I know that I do not want to fistfight anyone else on Planet Earth. I am too old to play mind games with anyone. If you want to play mind games, I suggest that you find a group of children to play with each day of the week. Whenever you reach your 50s in age, it is time to stop the madness and keep it real with me and other people. You need to keep it real with yourself. I will play Checkers Chess and Spades. I also will play five card stud poker with anyone. I take quizzes just to stay sharp academically. I tend to focus on psychology and social psychology on a daily basis. I do love political science. I have a Chess board and checkers as well as playing cards. I also know how to shoot dice. Casino Royale is my thing. Some people will call me a Caucasian male inside of an African American Body. Members of the Elite are jealous of me and my progression in my life right now. Members of the Elite strongly dislike me as a person. This is because I have earned 235 College Education Credits from the University of Toledo. I also graduated twice from College; in 1993 & 1995 respectively. I came close to earning a Master's degree in Social Work. I am going to enroll in classes at Hillsdale College in the Fall of this year. If the Lord's Will! It is not my will anymore. It's God's Will!! Good Day Everyone and Happy New Year 2024. It is a shame that people dislike you over your own success in your life. People dislike another person of color, especially if they are educated. If you are successful in the community at large, I am very proud of you. It is time to edify one another and stop this genocide that occurs inside of diversed communities.
In Review, I would rather help people rather than kill them with the use of drugs of any type. I understand that we make decisions based on our desires. Your body is a Temple of the Living God. Therefore you are not you own. God Bless You and May God keep you in 2024. Thank you for reading my essay.

My thoughts…
This is the #longcovid that I got because I was 1 of the 1st people in #Pinal-County, #Arizona, #USA to have been diagnosed with #COVID19 back in ‘2019! The #doctor thought it was #ValleyFever (yet that would have made the 5th time contacting that from soil in 15 yrs) & treated it differently then what the whole world knew Covid needed back then! The strange part is people don’t usually contact Valley Fever that many times unless it is a VERY RARE strain. Then when medical treatment made my health worse I was told “…just continue treatment as we think it has to get worse before it gets better…” by my pulmonologist/ oncologist.
Since December 2019, I have been diagnosed with “chronic post Covid disease”. The sad part is I got it from my partner at time (who I have since left & #divorced for #domestic #violence & #stalking reasons), who was the carrier when they contracted it (symptom free) from their coworker that had just been to #Mexico City to visit family for #DayOfTheDead (October 30-31 ‘2019). 7-10days after returning the coworker, his wife, & kids all fell ill & almost died! The Phoenix Hospital they went to in Arizona thought it was something else, then found on a post testing that also lead to relapse for them that it was in-fact covid. My Ex did contact COVID, but thought it was “…just a relapse of chrones disease flaring up…” as the doctor told them at time.
Now, my heart, lungs, liver, brain, digestive system, thyroid & immune system have been compromised and permanently damaged by this “… #China #Virus …” and I am so pissed that #who & #cdc knew about the WHOLE WORLDWIDE Chemical Weapons Projects & Competition in developing this greatest weapon so far!
They can argue that they didn’t know, as it accidentally spread, but as a Military Brat I know the truth when I see coverup’s! I was born overseas and came here on a Visa myself! I have been diagnosed with other medical issues related to chemical exposure from my 16+ years growing up active duty! What the Government & VA do not tell you is that’s “the price you pay for freedom” the CIA & FBI teaches military service members & their dependents! “Suck It Up, BUTTERCUP!” Was what I heard from everyone growing up.
So, I learned to deny myself & the pain, seizures, & other issues I had but the military doctors told me that I “was just a brat & wanted attention” and the brainwashing of that caused permanent damage as They Had Evidence of me having a swelled heart & brain issue since birth & never disclosed it to my mom! That swelling was treated by asthma medication which thus caused lung damage & further health issues to heart, lung, kidneys, liver, and joints! Now it’s proven I was exposed to #Monsanto #Agent #Orange as it was used at full strength on the military bases we were stationed at!
Although I can’t file suit against Monsanto or the USA Government because they are immune to lawsuits it doesn’t stop me from speaking the truth for myself & others! I was born at the end of Vietnam and thus the father knew my biological father was exposed to #AgentOrange himself too! The military had a surplus of #AG & “…used it for all the land on certain bases to keep it clear for surveillance purposes…” According to the Pentagon Reports & other agencies the USA Government was “keeping us safe” even though they knew it contained health issues & was seen as a major health concern.

Homeschool May Be Better Than Traditional School
Homeschooling is educating a child at home. Currently, home-schooling is accelerating, the most useful and adapted approach to educate kids. Post Covid19 most people will shift towards this method when it comes to educate their child safely. It provides numerous benefits than the traditional method of education. Children who are homeschooled get a chance to study in free and comfortable environment, which will help them to progress in an innovative way. It will also contribute in achieving better goals and knowledge over time.
Homeschool helps in promoting closer and intimate relationships with parents. For those children who need special care, homeschool offers special educational attention. It will also save time and efficiency as they don’t have to rush for transport to send their child to school. A homeschool child is much more active as well as has more growth prospects to achieve a lot of success in their life. There are various advantages of Homeschooling.
Few of them are as follows.
Individualized Teaching In homeschool child gets one-on-one teaching attention and parents also have an idea about their child. They have the freedom to dwell on any topic for longer period of time, if required. On the other hand, at a traditional school, in a normal class strength is at least between 20–30 students. So, it is difficult for a teacher to pay attention to all children individually and their progress in the class. Yet at homeschool, parent can help their child with the weak subjects immediately.
Interest Based Learning Every child has some special interest and different set of preferences. In homeschool a child learns to gainknowledge not just to achieve grades. Homeschool gives a chance to child so that they couldlearn according to theirchoice and preferences. In homeschool a child will not have any competition which will help both child and parents to focus only on knowledge andprogress.
To Provide Safe Environment It is the primary concern of every parent to provide a safe environment for their child. Homeschool gives this freedom to parents up to a certain extent. As parents, they will also not feel insecure to send their child to
Stress-free Learning In traditional learning instances, mostly a child feels pressurized and stressed due tostudies and social pressure. With homeschool, a child gets an opportunity to study in free environment without any social pressure or stress, competition or comparisons to be judged by others. This encourages them to attain valuable knowledge that can last forever.
Better Educational Accomplishments Quality of education in homeschool is much better than traditional education. With more personal care and grooming a home schooled child tends to grab things more easily rather than traditional school children.
Customization of Curriculum as per Child In homeschool it is an advantage to customize curriculum as per child’s needs andcapabilities. The areas where child excel is expedited and other areas where he is weak can be focused, emphasized as well asexplained in much better way. In homeschool a child learns with fun as per the convenience as well as the choice of subjects.
Nurturing the talents of a child, personal care for grooming, guiding them for better social interaction, giving them adequate breaks between studying helps them to enjoy learning. There are other advantages of home school. As a parent home school is the best alternative, just to make sure that theirchild is getting the required learning experience, knowledge and enjoying the subject. As long as parents make sure that the home-schooled children are getting the required learning and educational experiences, homeschooling can be considered a better alternative to formal school education.

How Can Fleet Management Help To Monitor Your COVID 19 Safety Norms?
Fleet crews, such as drivers and vehicle operators, do not have the option of transitioning to "Work-from-Home" models! They're out there on the beat, battling the elements. And, like other Front-Line Workers, they work long hours in stressful circumstances.
Logistics and Transport Managers have a moral commitment to ensure that they not only develop Covid-safe processes, but also teach, support, and assist their Fleet Crew in adopting and adhering to these Covid safety rules.
Following strict Covid-safety procedures will aid in the protection of the Fleet Crew, their loved ones, and the communities and society in which they live and work.
First and foremost, keep informed and aware!
Logistics and Supply Chain companies are in charge of their fleets, which are on the front lines of the Covid19 struggle. For some employees, their "company car" is their location of employment.
As a result, as a Fleet Manager, it is your obligation to reduce – if not eradicate – potential diseases among your fleet staff and those with whom they come into contact. As a result, you must not only remain up to date on government rules and guidelines for dealing with the epidemic, but you must also incorporate these advice into your fleet management.
Fleet Managers and Fleet Crew have seldom worked from home and are not accustomed to handling everyday operations remotely! You can set up your staff (and yourself) to work remotely and stay proactive whenever possible - you'd be able to accomplish this efficiently by using current fleet management software to easily manage operations and see fleet data in real-time.
Fleet managers may reduce the risk of infection and keep their employees safe by adhering to best procedures and being severe if necessary.
Best Practices for Monitoring Covid-19 Safety Norms in Fleet Management
Let's start with an outline of the best practises that fleet drivers and operators must adhere to.
1) Inform the Fleet Crew
Transport Managers are more accountable than ever for their fleet crew - not only do you need to employ Covid safe practices, but you also need to make sure that you convey this directly to your team members.
Make yourself available: this is an unprecedented scenario. Make yourself available to answer any questions or issues that your fleet members may have. Two-way communication is required.
2) Less Customer Interaction:
Several fleet management businesses have ceased requesting clients to sign bills/invoices in order to avoid closeness and interaction. Instead, the driver or fleet operator signs on their behalf.
3) Vehicle Occupancy Restrictions:
The transmission must be broken. The number of people in a vehicle has been temporarily limited by fleets. Eg If there are two passengers in a car, the driver and passenger are separated in front and rear for comfort.
Drivers: Covid19 Safety Protocol
Create a regular cleaning schedule. Before and after a shift, clean. Take extra care to clean shared automobiles. The completion must be approved by the supervisor.
Be conscientious about vehicle sanitation.
Wash common surfaces with hot water and a strong alcohol-based cleaning solution.
Handles, mirrors, windows, doors, tools, switches, buttons, and touchpads should all be cleaned. When necessary, use specialist electronics cleaners.
Clean the linen seats and curtains. Clean the matting
4) Providers of Services:
Fleet managers have minimized driver contact at service centers by utilizing mobile fleet service providers, eliminating the requirement for cars to be towed to a garage.
5) Maintaining Personal Hygiene:
Sanitation saves lives! Drivers and operators must clean their hands after each journey or interaction with others while on the road.
Encourage drivers to sterilize all frequently used surfaces many times each day. To keep things clean, Fleet Managers have enforced periodic (e.g., hourly) cleanings.
Maintain proper respiratory hygiene: Cover coughs and sneezes to avoid spreading them to others.
Keypads (credit card swipes, odometer entry), fuel cards - all surfaces touched must be cleaned.
6) Vehicle Sanitation in the Pool:
If a surface is not cleaned, the virus can frequently persist for 72 hours. Drivers must sterilize every location and surface they touch - both while arriving and returning.
Covid19 Safety Protocol for Fleet Managers
Maintain compliance with all applicable government rules and public health requirements.
Wherever practical, use "Social Distancing": Use separate cars, limit vehicle occupancy, discontinue vehicle pooling, and utilise work-shifts to reduce overlap.
Supervise fleet-related safety measures that have been imposed.
Document vehicle cleaning – a vehicle deemed "infected" will stay idle until it has been thoroughly cleaned and aired out.
Remove the "stigma of infection" via dialogue and teamwork.
Place cleaning supplies (sanitizers, sprays, wipes, and disinfectants) in prominent and accessible locations.
Identify rest spots, petrol stations, motels, and eateries to verify they are operational and follow COVID-19 criteria such as contactless payment, food service, and cleaning.
7) Tools and Supplies:
What must be done: companies have demanded that employees not utilize other people's desks, offices, phones, computers, work tools, or equipment (etc). However, management must also propose adequate alternatives to avoid misunderstanding. In addition to cars, fleet personnel must be trained to clean their tools and equipment on a regular basis. Disposable gloves are fantastic: It is a safe practice to use and discard.
8) Office Ventilation:
Given the (increasing) necessity of ventilation, several businesses have chosen to replace workstation cabin filters more frequently than conventional maintenance schedules need to "Template" the desired safety behavior.
Many of the best practices and Covid19 safety behavior are "everyday, ordinary" tasks that we regularly conduct in our daily lives with little thinking at all. However, the Covid19 scenario has suddenly thrown all such ordinary actions under scrutiny because of the risk now associated with anything handled in common, anything needing human closeness.
As a result, businesses have developed a "Template" for Covid19 behavior. This template offers instructions and directions to guarantee that your fleet management and operators adhere to policies in order to stay safe and reduce the danger of spreading in the community.
Protect your valuable front-line workers, fleet drivers, and operators.
As previously stated, commercial fleet drivers and vehicle operators work arduous and physically grueling occupations over long shifts and frequently face adverse weather and natural forces. While many professions and duties have been reconstructed and reworked to employ the Work-from-Home model in the Covid-19 circumstance, fleet operators and drivers do not have that benefit. They are out on the beat every day, carrying out their duties and placing themselves in danger as Front-Line Workers…
In this case, logistics businesses and fleet management teams must assume responsibility for creating a safe work environment and safety protocol for their drivers and fleet operators. Mental and physical exhaustion are frequently the causes of "becoming slack in the following routine" - Transport Managers must be careful of their staff's workload, especially in these times of restricted personnel availability.
GPS-enabled Fleet Management Software: aids in the maintenance of Covid19 safety standards.
A GPS-enabled cloud-based Fleet Tracking Software is an excellent current technology solution for Fleet Management. It is hosted on a centralized Cloud Server, and its communication capabilities like as alerts, pop-ups, notes, and emergency contacts (among others) can be simply incorporated into current company systems and utilized to connect with the workforce - whether onsite or out in the field.
Conclusion: Fleet Managers bear direct responsibility for the safety of their Fleet Crew, particularly those on the beat. They must utilize all available tools and strategies to secure their safety.

Thank you for reading my essay.

liminality, improbability, and believing in grifter kings
"liminal" and "liminal experience" are two terms that have been sloppily used in contemporary discourse. I don't think most people grasp just how commonplace "liminal experiences" really are; probably you've had at least one or two of them every day of your life, and never thought of them as liminal.
have you ever lain awake at night trying to pick out words from the murmur of a distant conversation or television set, but you couldn't be sure you caught anything? that was a liminal experience.
have you ever seen something out of the "corner of your eye", thought it was one thing, then you turned for a closer look only to behold something different from what you'd first guessed at? again, a liminal experience?
have you ever felt as though you were certain an ant or some other insect were crawling across your skin, only to check yourself and find nothing? once again, a liminal experience.
a liminal experience is any experience that remains below the limit of certain perception. you think maybe you can perceive definite words, but can't be certain of catching anything—you thought you saw something at first glance, but your second glance showed you something else—you felt that there was an insect on you, but found none. all of these are uncertain experiences, experiences that are on the boundary or threshold (līmen, in Latin) between "I felt something" and "I just imagined it". all of these are liminal.
liminality, and correctly perceiving when our own perceptions are uncertain, is extremely important to human experience; honesty and clarity of thought require accurate assessment not merely of the things you think you're certain about, all your "facts and logic", but also of the things overshadowed by doubt. it's not good for the human mind to pretend to extreme certainty about all perceptions and experiences...
...so it's just a little worrying that our society, "Western" society that is, has taught people to pretend that liminal experiences are somehow abnormal, something that's the domain only of weirdos fixated on the supernatural. the habitual pose of the respectable Western person is one of stoutly asserted certainty about everything. indeed it's considered gauche in Western conversation to admit to doubt about one's perceptions (or one's assertions of fact, or one's inferences, or anything else.) if two persons acculturated in Western manners are out walking and one of them thinks they hear a certain sound but the other hears nothing, it's highly likely that these two people will get into an intemperate argument about it, each person stubbornly clinging to a pose of utmost certainty about their own perceptions, and accusing the other person of having something wrong with them...merely because one of them perceived something the other didn't, and they can't live with the doubt inherent in such a disagreement.
to accept uncertainty and doubt in one's perceptions is ultimately to accept that the perception of reality is probabilistic; this is inevitable of course, because all reality is probabilistic in nature. quantum mechanics teaches us this: particles in space aren't perfect points but are instead described by an envelope of "probability density", a region of space in which the particle is likely to be observed. but polite Western society hasn't been good at dealing with probability and probabilistic things—and there's bitter irony in the fact that this same society has made probability and risk into objects of virtual cult adoration. we inhabit a world where people regularly pretend that highly probable and routine events "can't possibly happen", while also pretending that highly improbable claims must be taken at face value.
and of course, this highly self-contradictory approach to probability and uncertainty follows strict social lines. it's somehow "impossible" that millions of ordinary people have died from COVID19 and will continue to die, even though preventable death from disease is a routine event in Western society; but it's also somehow a dead certainty that Elon Musk will be King of Mars in ten years, ruling over the future of human civilization—if we only believe in him and shower him with billions of dollars to make his dreams come true. Elon Musk and other such entrepreneurial criminals are judged to be "good risks" not on the basis of their actual achievements or a dispassionate assessment of their characters, but because they're Good People™, people who deserve implicit and unlimited trust because they're at the top of the Western social hierarchy. all those common people who will die of infectious diseases, on the other hand, "would have given the world nothing anyway"—somehow it's a certainty that COVID19 will kill nobody who "matters".
I do believe that Western society has reached this absurd pitch because, at a basic and fundamental level, "the West" teaches its citizens to be foolish about doubt and uncertainty. everyone is taught to pretend they're sure about everything—and they're taught to pretend that other people's certainties are mere delusion and "the mind playing tricks". reasonable doubt seems to have practically vanished as an intellectual concept from Western society...to the ruination of us all.

How the book came to be
On November 9th, 2022 “How to catch feelings for Jesus” was published via Wipf and Stock Publishing. This book was the fruit of a two year labor of love for me. It was a passion project during the COVID19 pandemic but that was merely the circumstance that gave me the time and focus to produce it. This book is the culmination of something welling up in me for years, before I ever started the typing. It is a deeply personal spiritual journey as well as an examination of broader cultural, sociological and religious influences on this whole idea of relating to Jesus Christ. At the center of it is a tension between the Jesus I met, and the one others told me about. The gulf between the two was always troubling to me.
There was always an awkwardness to it: even on that car-ride home from a summer camp in fourth grade I remember rather flippantly saying to myself that I would give Jesus a try. Ten-year-olds don’t often grasp the gravity of things, particularly when you grow up with the privilege of a safe home, good education, and the life opportunities I did. Nonetheless the ensuing years, through adolescence into adulthood and up to my present, Jesus took my awkward yes and returned to me tenfold the blessings of a relationship. The awkwardness of it never went away however and that became a question in itself for me to ponder.
I was blessed enough to be free from religious abuses, Catholic guilt, and any cultural war narratives in my early years believing: so I like to think my faith in Jesus was never predicated upon any false assumptions about what it needed to be. While I credit this as a reason my faith sustains me so integrally as an adult, there was a learning process there. What was lacking in my practices on a social awareness level in spite of the blissful belief of my youth? Service trips and social teachings matured my faith but still did not clear out the awkwardness of it all. There were bigger realities to wrestle with in that regard. I looked to the bigger picture beyond the Church building or even the soup kitchens and thrift stores that formed me.
That was the year I graduated from college and became a Youth Minister. That year was 2016: a year that featured about half a dozen flashpoints in my own life matched by a crazy national environment. That bigger picture I needed to understand started coming into stark relief.
Oftentimes followers of Jesus Christ, of many stripes across most every denomination, will mistake diminishing cultural preference for persecution. As a result Christians in the United States of America have increasingly associated themselves with people and tactics that don’t do any favors for the message of the one they claim to follow. Far from truly persecuted in this country, Christians have made the religion, and the one at the center of it, less appealing to those who would be otherwise persuadable. This is against the preexisting backdrop of increasing secularization and a Catholic Church of mine that carelessly squandered any cultural authority it might have still possessed in crisis after self-inflicted crisis. The Sex Abuse scandal rightfully made it the punchline of ubiquitous jokes for as far back as I can remember. The scandal itself exposed just how poorly professing believers in Jesus Christ drop the ball on accountability and basic human dignity in the truly horrific cases. Chapters 3 and 6 deal with these and a constellation of other issues in the Christian world: a Crisis of Christianity today. The corruption of power indeed doesn’t stop at the Church doors. How could anyone approach the true Jesus with this as their context?
As I explored all of this Jesus spoke to me through that bigger picture. What if, through my own experience however flawed that maybe, I tried to provide some kind of step-by-step guide on how to get to know the Jesus I believe really reaches out to us in spite of how his less savory followers portray him? That idea floated around in my head innocuously for years until the chaos of 2020. In Chapter Six of the book I talk about how a series of inklings from God helped me get some critical graduate work done the winter going into that year before the pandemic shut everything down. Though 2020 was scary throughout, that little helping hand turned my eyes back to Jesus and my faith grew deeper once again that spring. By the summer I started writing the book I am now blessed enough to see published.
As I make clear right off the bat in the introduction: I have no special, privileged knowledge you couldn’t find without a focused enough google search. I am no guru, and this is not a self-help book. The polemics of Christian spirituality is nothing I am even particularly qualified to speak on, I am no Priest, deacon, theologian or professor… though my wife says I behave quite like an encyclopedia sometimes. The idea of this book as I wrote it in the step by step format was to provide everyday people with a roadmap to loving Jesus or “catching feelings” for him. The hope there being that my own reflections on Jesus and what he stands for could provide the blank spaces for the reader to fill in their own answers to how they might find Jesus. We’re all different but the living Jesus relates to us in ways that are personal and do make sense if only to us.
One piece of proverbial wisdom shared with me and many others along those lines is: “caught not taught.” That is faith in Jesus is something we catch more than we are simply taught. This truism popular among Youth Ministers made its way into the title of the book as you may have gathered. Good youth ministers hope to teach less than they simply want to create the conditions necessary for one to catch Jesus. Christian apologists the world over miss the point when our witness becomes solely an academic matter. This book is my effort to simply create the conditions necessary for the reader to catch feelings for Jesus.
As anyone who believes in something bigger than themselves often do: I wondered how much God called me to this. Was he pushing me to write this book? Was it my own inspired work? One thing I learned in my years of relationship with Jesus and particularly in the years writing this book is that the best answers we get from God are not the simple yes/no binaries. No, God is often found in the messy middle where answers take the form of the face of the downtrodden, the overlooked outgroup, and the personal revelations we strain to constitute in any clear words whatsoever. Is this book something God had a purpose for me to write it? I don’t know: that’s for you to answer. I pray you find it worth your time.
“How to catch feelings for Jesus” is available online through Wipf & Stock, Amazon, Barnes & Noble and everywhere books are sold online. Reach out to me if you need a discount code before the New Year. Stay tuned to this blog for more content from the author and weekly reflections every Friday.
