Honestly it's a miracle of God, albeit one I didn't particularly want, that despite my genetics, abysmal health, and lifelong stress, that I didn't start getting my first silver hairs until I was like twenty-eight. Both of my parents significantly started graying as teenagers and while their lives weren't perfect they had vastly better health and incredibly less stress than I've had my entire life
#i watched both of my parents obsess over dyeing their hair every two weeks or so as i grew up#and i told myself that i would never care that much and let myself grey/age gracefully and withour protest#but i probably will dye my hair when i get grayer but like. funky colors like inhuman copper or a funky blue#I'd do that now but i can't handle bleach so it won't show up as well or last as long because my hair is so dark#sadly my gray hair as of right now is just a few shiny silver strands immersed in dark brown#so it'll be a while#hair is hair

have you used henna before? my mother & best friend both use it religiously and they both say it cannot under any circumstances be used on hair that has any âartificialâ (chemical) colour done. Obviously you know best, I just wanted to let you know in case you werenât aware of any kind of warning about that
this is so thoughtful of you- yes, i've been using indigo and henna pretty regularly since 2022! i used pure henna to colour my (at the time waist length) hair entirely red and then darkened it with indigo at the start of this year- fortunately at this point i don't have any chemical colour in my hair, its just been lightened with peroxide (and very poorly) and i regret ever going off the henna path đ in a perfect world i'd just go back in with indigo and go dark again but it won't take on the bleached portions or it'll come out green (as the ends of my hair did when i bleached them- i thought i had grown out/cut off all of the indigo as it blended so much with my natural hair). and now im just babbling my current hair woes to you- rest assured, i do know the horror stories about chemical dye and henna, which is why im very nervous about using chemical dyes at all! henna has been very good to me so far. thank you for checking in!!
#i did a test strand of pure henna on my hair tonight to see how it would behave and its still damp but it looks like a really nice copper#with darker ends ofc but theoretically it will cancel the green tones#everyone says my hair doesnt look that bad but it does look that bad. to me <3

Understanding Stranded Flexible Copper Connectors: Key Features and Advantages
In the field of electronics and electrical engineering, the efficiency and reliability of your systems can be heavily affected by the connector you use. Among the several choices at hand, stranded flexible copper connections stand out for their adaptability and better electrical features. With an eye on silver-plated and Nickel Plated Copper Wire, this blog explores the salient characteristics and benefits of Stranded Flexible Copper Connectors.
What Are Stranded Flexible Copper Connectors?
Made to provide more flexibility and conductivity than their solid counterparts, Stranded Flexible Copper Connectors Many tiny copper wires braided together to create a single conductor from these connectors. This design offers many advantages, especially in uses needing constant movement or adaptability.
Key Features of Stranded Flexible Copper Connectors
Enhanced Flexibility: Stranded copper connectors have mostly one benefit: their flexibility. Stranded connectors stretch and flex without losing their conducting qualities, unlike inflexible, breakable solid copper wires under stress. For uses where the cables must constantly move or where the connectors must negotiate confined areas, their adaptability makes them perfect.
Improved Durability: By more fairly spreading mechanical stress over the wire, the stranded architecture lowers the chance of damage and wear over time. This produces more robust connectors able to tolerate physical strain, vibration, and bending without sacrificing performance.
Superior Electrical Conductivity: Excellent electrical conductivity abounds from stranded copper cables. More surface area for electrical flow given by the many threads helps to reduce resistance as compared to solid wires. This increased conductivity guarantees effective power transfer and lowers the heat-generating risk resulting from electrical resistance.
Reduced Signal Loss Stranded copper connectors reduce signal loss in high-frequency uses. By lowering impedance and preserving constant electrical characteristics across the wire's length, the design makes higher signal integrity possible. In data transfer and telecommunications applications especially, this is crucial.
Silver Plated Copper Wire: Advantages
Because of its specific plating, Silver Plated Copper Wire is a speciality kind of stranded copper wire with further advantages. Using copper wire with silver plating offers the following benefits for your connections.
Enhanced Conductivity: Silver among all the metals has the best electrical conductivity. Silver arranging of the copper wire will significantly boost the general conductivity of the connection. Improved conductivity adds to better performance in high-speed and high-frequency applications.
Corrosion Resistance: A protective coating created by Silver Plated Copper Wire aids to stop corrosion and oxidation. In settings where the connectors come into contact with moisture or hostile circumstances, this especially helps to guarantee long-term performance and dependability.
Improved Solderability: Excellent solderability of copper wire with Silver Plated Copper Wire makes building dependable and robust connections simpler. Ensuring constant performance and reducing the possibility of connection failure depend on this function.
Nickel Plated Copper Wire: Advantages
Another choice for stranded connectors, Nickel Plated Copper Wire offers several advantages:
Increased Mechanical Strength: Copper wire gains mechanical strength via Nickel Plated Copper Wire, so increasing its resistance to wear and abrasion. In applications where the connectors experience mechanical stress or regular movement, this is especially important.
Superior Corrosion Resistance: Silver among all the metals has the best electrical conductivity. Silver plating of the copper wire will significantly boost the general conductivity of the connector. From this enhanced conductivity, better performance in high-speed and high-frequency uses follows.
High-Temperature Performance: Â Nickel Plated Copper Wire resists higher temperatures than unplated copper wire. This qualifies for uses including automotive or industrial environments when heat is a consideration.
Choosing the Right Connector for Your Application
Selecting Stranded Flexible Copper Connectors for your projects requires careful consideration of the particular needs of your application. Here are some things to bear in mind:
Flexibility Needs: If your application calls for constant movement or bending, you really should use a very flexible stranded copper connector. Choose one that fits your needs since both silver plated and nickel plated choices provide different degrees of flexibility.
Environmental Conditions: Think about the surroundings where the connectors will be used. While Nickel Plated Connections provide great mechanical strength and high-temperature performance, silver-plated connectors are best for settings likely to be corrosive.
Performance Requirements: Silver Plated Copper Wire offers the best conductivity and signal integrity for high-frequency or high-speed uses. Conversely, nickel plated wire shines in conditions calling for strong mechanical qualities and thermal resistance.
Conclusion
Whether silver plated or nickel plated, Stranded Flexible Copper Connectors provide many advantages that could improve the dependability and performance of your electrical systems. Knowing the main characteristics and benefits of different connectors helps you to decide which kind of connector best fits your particular use. Stranded Flexible Copper Connectors offer a flexible and efficient answer for a variety of electrical and electronic needs, regardless of your prioritiesâflexibility, conductivity, or durability.

when i was 14 i had a friend, a gay guy with a regina george complex, who had thin dry light brown hair, and used to dye his hair during school breaks, i once mentioned how i always wanted to dye my hair pastel pink or electric blue, and he said i could never dye my hair those colors because my hair was black and therefore i would never be able to bleach it enough to do those colors as i would basically need to go platinum blonde and my hair would fall of before reaching that point, and sometimes i think about it and laugh, mainly because my hair isnât black, itâs actually a dark brown, but itâs so thick it looks black a lot of the time, it goes down several shades with the sun and it can even pass for light brown sometimes, i donât go under the sun a lot so even i sometimes refer to it as black, but i have also bleached it to platinum blonde plenty of times since then and itâs always still been thicker and healthier than my ex-friendâs hair lmao
#iâve never done pastel pink or electric blue tho#iâve learned pastel pink requires too much upkeep#and electic blue itâs kinda hard to find lmao#i also am lazy so when i do fantasy colors i choose ones that fade pretty#so i donât have to worry about re touching it lmao#i say currently with a copper brown hair lmao#with some greenish strands mixed in#i put this current bleach through so many different colors my hair doesnât really know what to fade to anymore#just one month of growth until i can chop ot off lmao

Rating: M | This is smut! No one under 18, Minors DNI!
Summary: From the age of ten, your heart has belonged to Aemond Targaryen. As the factions of your family wage war, each fighting for the crown, all you want is to love the man you chose. | Ft. "You think I wanted to fall in love with you, of all people?" Requested by @niamh11 Warnings: Targcest, doubt, war, death (mentioned), dragon fire, inaccurate Targaryen marriage rites, PinV, oral (f!receiving), Harrenhal, light drugging (nothing happens while drugged, just sleep; only briefly mentioned). Aemond and Reader are 20. Pairing: Aemond Targaryen x fem!Targaryen Reader (Daemon's Daughter, Unspecified Mother - not Rhaenyra) Word Count: 11.5k (I don't know, I blacked out) HotD Taglist
For weeks, it felt as if every breath was filled with the scent of damp earth, the smoke of dragon fire, the copper tang of blood, or the char of wood and bone. Each was heavier than the last, harder to draw and less likely to fill your lungs, but you continued to fight to catch your breath with every moment that passed.
The stench of war, now hanging heavily over the entirety of the realm, made itself at home in the fabric of your clothes, the strands of your hair, the very pores of your skin. It haunted you in your sleep, lingered just around every corner and refused to allow you a moment of peace. Despite your reluctance to fight, to watch the realm tear itself apart, it slowly consumed every piece of your life. But the stench, while maddening, meant that you were still alive.
For now, anyway.
Once, only a few short moons ago, towns and villages near the Kingsroad found themselves on the verge of prosperity. Their proximity afforded them the coin of travelers, of weary men wandering through the realm for one reason or another and sellswords looking for work - or, more often, debauchery. None were as large as Oldtown or Kingâs Landing, none quite as prosperous, but it was more than could be said for other villages. There was food to eat, coin to be earned, and fun to be had; just enough for the inhabitants to consider themselves lucky.
Unfortunately, their luck only extended so far.
The all-consuming threat of dragon fire often loomed over the realm. There were many who were raised to fear the ancient beasts - and rightfully so, for their not so distant ancestors perished in flames - but, for many, the threat seemed far off.
Until smoke filled the skies and the threat that once seemed so distant now swallowed them whole.
Blackened land surrounded you at every turn. Fields, once filled with crops, reduced to nothing more than a pile of ash; pastures, once teeming with livestock, a final resting place for cleaned bones; ponds, once a source of water for the bustling village, still bubbling as it boiled. Once great buildings were nothing more than rubble, mere pieces of stone marking where they once stood, and the streets were littered with bodies still smoking.
Though the sight was growing familiar, you could still feel the bile raise in the back of your throat as you stepped across cobblestone paths in search of any survivors. The beat of your heart echoed in your ears, hammering so hard inside your chest you worried it might crack a rib, and you struggled to even your breathing as you gripped your sword.
There was no need to guess who had lain waste to the lands, no need to question those who managed to flee, those who would spend the rest of their lives searching the skies in fear. It was obvious whose work this was and your father had little problem reminding you.
âI suppose your beloved did not deem this attack worth discussion upon your last meeting,â he sneered, toeing at a large piece of melted metal. âTell me, what is it you see in him; his devotion to senseless violence or his shameless predilection for leaving nothing but death and destruction in his wake? Your devotion to him is⌠baffling."
For a moment, it felt as if your heart stopped. While he had not spoken of him as anything other than a nuisance, a proverbial thorn in his side, since his refusal to allow you to marry, it was of little surprise to you that your father knew your heart still belonged to him. Most turned blind eyes - some willingly, with no desire to speak aloud your transgression; others simply allowed you to go unnoticed, expecting this behavior from the eldest child of the Rogue Prince - but you should have known there was nothing you could hide from him.
âI have loved him since we were children,â you reminded him, needlessly. âI cannot simply stop. As for what I see in him, I would say that I saw you, father,â you began, voice thick with emotion, âbut something like this would require you to sully your own hands.â Despite the knot in your throat and the tears stinging the backs of your eyes, you carried on, hoping he couldnât hear the shake of your voice. âAemondâs crimes are his own. Yours are carried out by men who have the misfortune of trusting you.â
Daemon Targaryen had always been noted for his prowess in battle, his cunning, his silver tongue, his enjoyment of Flea Bottom. Rarely was he noted for his even temper or his devotion as a father. He loved you, and your siblings - of this you were almost certain - but you considered it evident when he chose to reach for you, hand clasped in a viselike grip on your throat, rather than his sword the moment the words left your lips.
âMind your tongue,â he ordered, voice a low rasp as his violet eyes narrowed. âThis,â he hissed, gesturing to the carnage you stood amidst, âis the work of a weak, pathetic little boy throwing a fucking tantrum. He wants war, he wants blood, he wants the crown; he knows nothing of the reality. He has chosen to burn his own kingdom for a chance to play king now that his drunken, usurper cunt of a brother has disappeared and were it not for Rhaenyra, for you, I would let him.â Daemon paused, his grip tightening on your throat - earning a sharp gasp, a desperate scrabble of your fingers, nails digging into his forearm - as his gaze burned into yours. âI once saw myself in Aemond,â he confessed, voice softening, âthough there is one grand distinction. I would sacrifice the world for Rhaenyra, for our children, for you. Aemond will sacrifice you the moment you no longer serve his purpose."
A single glance around the village, around the dozen other villages youâd flown through on your patrols - on your search for Aemond, for Vhagar, for any sign of an impending Green attack - confirmed that your father spoke the truth. The Aemond you loved was long gone, replaced by a man desperately clawing for the power that now seemed well within his grasp, but you were your fatherâs daughter.
Dragon rider since ten, skilled with a sword, intelligent, comely gifted with a mind for strategy - it was oft whispered that you were a mirror of Daemon Targaryen. The best, and some of the worst, parts of your father were passed directly to you. And, unfortunately, that included his predilection to stubbornly listen to the thrum of your heart rather than reason.
âYou act as if you have the right to shame anyone, as if you have not sacrificed many and more in the name of getting what you want,â you reminded him, nails sinking into his skin and drawing blood. The rasp of your voice was quiet, almost a whisper, but it carried through the hauntingly empty ruins as you searched his face for any hint of understanding. When you found none, you pleaded, âWhat would you have me do, father? Tell me, please.â
âReturn to Harrenhal,â he commanded, releasing his grip on your throat, gaze never once leaving yours. âI will join you on the morrow.â For a moment, you stood toe to toe - jaw working as you contemplated speaking, wondering if you could push words past the sudden dryness of your mouth - before Daemon turned. âThat is a command. Go.â
Without sparing you a second glance, Daemon stalked across the field to mount Caraxes before beginning his ascent.
Rather than immediately following the harsh command, one he would almost certainly apologize for in his own way - with an embrace, most likely, or a tale of his youth - you allowed yourself a moment. With little regard for your armor, for your sword, you sank to your knees and pressed your palms into the scorched earth and reflected on how exactly you found yourself with an aching heart.
For much of your life, your heart beat for Aemond Targaryen.
As the eldest daughter of the Rogue Prince, Lords and knights from all parts of the realm - princes from Dorne and the Free Cities - all vied for your hand, once upon a time. With every tourney or feast you attended, you were inundated with glances and introductions. Each conversation included boasts of riches and land, of family titles and pedigrees. Daemon found it intoxicating, waiting for the perfect proposal to be made, while it all mattered none to you.
The idea of marriage was one you disliked, but one you knew would become reality sooner rather than later. As a Targaryen, there were but two possibilities: your marriage would serve as a political alliance, your husband chosen for the connections he could bring the crown, the resources his house could provide; or you would marry another Targaryen, a member of your own house who could ensure your name and bloodline carried on.
Neither was appealing but a political marriage always seemed the most likely option as you viewed it as the only way your father could win favor with his brother. It was an eventuality you were prepared for as your brothers were young, and betrothed, while you knew little and less of your cousins.
Visits to the Red Keep were few and far between, only possible when your father and uncle found themselves in good spirits - or at such odds that a conversation was necessary - and even less frequent upon your fatherâs marriage to Rhaenyra. Alicent Hightowerâs children mattered little to you at first, their existence often forgotten as you followed your father from this exile to that, but everything changed the moment Aemond claimed Vhagar.
Funerals - too many of which youâd witnessed in such a short existence - never sat well with you. They served as a reminder that while House Targaryen sat high atop the Iron Throne and soared through the skies on the backs of ancient beasts, none could escape the Strangerâs eventual embrace.
Mortality felt too heavy a thought for one so young but it was the ever present reality.
On a day that felt so heavy, so sobering, you were surprised to find any joy at all. There was so much anger, so much tension, so much sadness, that you wondered how anyone would carry on at all. But somewhere, amidst the depths of despair, you stood in awe of the timid boy who once had trouble looking you in the eye as he mounted the oldest and fiercest dragon you knew.
Aemondâs joy was almost palpable that night. His relief at having claimed a dragon - the dragon - set you at ease, thrilled you almost more than claiming your own dragon, and you watched happily as he circled Driftmark. Vhagar carried him around the island and their cries, his of triumph, carried on the wind. It filled your chest with a warmth youâd never known, a joy that felt almost suffocating. The sight of him, fearless and finally free of the cruel teasing of his brother and yours, endeared him to you in a way you never bothered to examine.
Upon his return, a split second after his feet hit the sand and your eyes met, you pulled him into your arms. With one embrace, you saw a future, a life of love - of joy, of dragon rides and quiet evenings - and you hoped he might feel the same.
It was fitting, you supposed, for the love story you always wished for to be marked by fire and blood.
The first and only time you hoped that you might marry for love while fulfilling your duty to your house ended in bloodshed. Though you were both but ten years old, you learned an important lesson; hope is not meant for a Targaryen.
Driftmark, in hindsight, began it all - the start of your love story, the seeds of ruin that would someday fell it - but you were nothing, if not stubborn.Â
Despite the events of that night, despite your father marrying Rhaenyra and the boys becoming your brothers, Aemond knew you shouldered no blame. Though he wanted an apology, an acknowledgement of wrongdoing, he was satisfied; an eye for Vhagar, of all dragons, was a worthwhile price to pay, that much he confided in the first of many letters you shared.
The letters were flowed easily and, though most contained trivial thoughts that mattered little to anyone but the pair of you, they meant the world to you. For the first time in a long time, you felt content - happy, even.Â
As you grew older, you understood little and less of the rift between your family. Your relationship with Aemond was easy, almost effortless, but everything else seemed so needlessly complicated. There were apologies owed and egos too fragile to repent for past sins; a simple problem with an even simpler solution. However, it seemed as if all were too self-involved to see the simplicity.
Viserys, with his ailing health and reputation as peacetime king, wanted nothing more than for peace amongst his own family.
For all the harsh words and bitter distance, for all the sleepless nights and long fights, for all the accusations and moments of mistrust, Viserys and Daemon truly loved one another. There was nothing, in the end, that could destroy their relationship.
That was why, you supposed, when Viserys suggested it and you insisted, Daemon agreed to send you to ward in Kingâs Landing.
The gesture was one, both you and Viserys insisted, meant to unite your families. Your willingness to step into a proverbial viperâs den, however, did little to ease the tension that grew so thick you feared it may someday choke you.
In hindsight, you knew the damage was already done. The groundwork for the coming war, the brewing discontent and deep mistrust, was laid long before you entered the picture. Perhaps it was naivety, or a brotherly desire to make up for past mistakes, that lead Viserys to believe the decision would invoke fondness between the halves of your families - or perhaps less bloodshed when the reckoning finally arrived - but a Dreamer he was not.
Most believed disaster loomed over the Red Keep but none could have predicted just how horrifying it would be.
Upon your arrival to the Red Keep, you were reminded of how long it had been since you wandered its halls. Little of your childhood was spent there, visits grew fewer and farther between, but very little remained of image your mind conjured. There was no warmth, no cheer, no comfort. Though autumn had scarcely begun, the bitter cold of winter already enveloped the Keep and its inhabitants.
Viserys himself hailed your arrival as a cause for celebration. Helaena, too, found joy in your presence as you served as her closest friend and confidante. Aegon, now eight-and-ten, all but ignored your presence, as did his mother. And the one you missed the most seemed most outwardly indifferent to your presence.
Aemond spoke less than he did as a child, his words carefully measured, though his confidence had grown with him. He carried himself in a manner befitting a prince, with set shoulders and a keen violet eye scanning his surroundings at every turn. And while his brother spent his days deep in his cups or between the thighs of paid women, Aemondâs days were spent honing his abilities. He trained with Cole in the yard, studied with the maesters in the library, and listened intently to every conversation he could catch regarding matters of the realm.
Though you spoke often through raven, the comfort did not quickly or easily extend to face-to-face interactions.
Despite the initial tension that arrived with you from Dragonstone, Aemond graced you with his presence more often than not. He sat with you in the library, body occupying the seat beside yours despite a handful of empty chairs scattered about the room, and went flying with you as often as you wished. At mealtimes, he sat at your side - his violet eye trained on you, observing but rarely speaking more than a handful of words - and walked the gardens with you after breaking your fast.
There were moments of bitterness, bouts of anger where your tempers flared - particularly in the beginning, and often because of one sibling or another - and more moments spent hurling cruel words at one another.
But with every moon that passed, you settled into a life far different than any you couldâve imagined. And with every moment spent by Aemondâs side, you knew it was love - real and true - youâd found all those years ago. Love lightened your spirit, brought you a warmth and a comfort you never knew existed, and joy found you despite the chill of the Red Keep. Aemond was the one you wanted and, delighted, you learned he felt the same.
Yet, neither of you forgot that hope was more dangerous a beast than any dragon.
Hope abandoned you both as you sought permission to marry. Though Viserys was overjoyed, thrilled by the prospect of uniting the family through the joining of your hands, there were few others who shared his enthusiasm. The factions of your family agreed on little as of late but Alicent and Daemon found themselves in agreement at long last; both would sooner see their children miserable, alone or trapped in loveless marriages, than allow them to marry.
It seemed as if everyone, save Viserys, shared the sentiment. And, as you gathered for what would - unbeknownst to you all - become the last supper, none were shy about sharing it.
Piece by piece, the future you foolishly allowed yourself to imagine shattered into shards that pierced your heart deeper and deeper. With every argument against your betrothal, with every sharp word uttered and eventual punch thrown, you felt the fate you desperately hoped to avoid closing in on you. And as your family disappeared from the Red Keep, eager to return to Dragonstone - with a parting command that you begin preparing to join them - you took to the skies to ruminate.
Naively, perhaps, you imagined you could have won them over.
There were a thousand arguments to be made in support of your marriage to Aemond, the least of which was the love you shared. Though Daemon mistrusted his nephew, he wouldâve seen reason - someday, perhaps - that Aemond loved you, that he would never cause you harm. Though your brothers disliked Aemond, the result of childhood animosity fed to you all by adults, you could have shown them how happy Aemond made you. And though Rhaenyra found herself wary, she knew your marriage would provide stability and comfort to Alicent upon her ascension.
If only Viserys had lived just a while longer.
Viserysâ death had long been a matter of when. In the immediate aftermath, you found yourself wondering how things might have changed had Rhaenyra remained at the Keep - if heâd died sooner rather than later, if sheâd been the one to share his final moments. But there was little time to dwell when you suddenly found yourself considered an enemy to the crown.
One moment, you were lingering in the Dragonpit - Aemondâs hand on your cheek, his forehead pressed to yours as he assured you there was nothing that could keep you apart - and the next, members of the Kingsguard were dragging you through the Keep to lock you in your room.
For several long hours, there was no explanation. Aemond was kept from you, sent from the Keep in search of his brother, and you were kept under strict guard. Despite the silence, you knew with great certainty that Viserys was dead and your stomach churned with fear of what was to come. And despite yourself, you held desperately to the hope that the great houses would remember their oaths to uphold Rhaenyra as the rightful heir.
Abandon all hope, should you wish to survive.
None knew what Otto Hightower intended to do with you - for it was, most certainly, he who masterminded Aegonâs ascension and he who planted the seeds of mistrust in you as a suitable match for his grandson - but you considered yourself blessed to escape that fate, nonetheless.
A knight of the Kingsguard facilitated your escape, granted you and Rhaenys the freedom necessary to flee Kingâs Landing. Rhaenys herself facilitated the liberation of your dragons, neither of whom you intended to leave without. And in the blink of an eye, every aspect of your life changed. War was nigh, closer than ever before, and though you escaped the Red Keep, hope held you prisoner.
For a blissful moment, little of your relationship with Aemond changed.
There were ravens - messages written in High Valyrian, now of greater significance than ever before - and meetings arranged in secluded woods. There were longing glances exchanged, fleeting touches and soft kisses, embraces you once refused out of some sense of propriety. Words of love were whispered and promises, bound to be broken, were made. There was even a dream, only spoken under cover of darkness, of finding a septon to marry you in a desperate bid to end the war before it began in earnest. But the storm itself had only just begun.
The question was never when, nor if, blood would be drawn; it was always who would draw it. Most feared it would be Daemon, or perhaps Aegon - both quick to anger, to act, desperate to prove themselves. But it was of little surprise to anyone, save you, that it was Aemond who began the Dance.
Whispers filled the land and the halls of Dragonstone echoed with the title that chipped at the already shattered pieces of your heart; Aemond One-Eye became Aemond the Kinslayer.Â
Most believed it was a deliberate act, retribution for the eye Lucerys stole as a boy. Others, an act of provocation to draw Rhaenyra out of hiding. Regardless of motive, nearly all found themselves in agreement that Aemond committed the most grievous sin. Though it was a compelling argument, one you found yourself struggling to deny when Jacaerys confronted you, you hoped it was not true.
Aemond longed for an apology, an acknowledgement that he was wronged. That much you knew to be true. But he was not a murderer, not one to cut down a child in cold blood.
Three long months of piecemeal battles followed Lucerys death - Visenyaâs death - and, despite the damage done and the fear beginning to grip the realm, there was little to be done to keep you away from Aemond. You continuously found one another, seeking solace where you knew it was guaranteed, and he swore Lucerysâ death was a tragic mistake. He apologized, sincerely, and you believed him.
Love, perhaps, was more dangerous than hope for it could make even the sharpest eye blind.
As you glanced around the village, reduced to nothing - to ash, to rubble, to ruin - you wondered if it was love that blinded you involuntarily or a choice made to protect what remained of your fragile heart.
Every sign that Aemond had changed, that he was no longer the boy you fell in love with but a man grown into a stranger, was there. And as you stood, limbs trembling as you realized an inn had become a graveyard, you wondered if heâd ever been the man you believed him to be.
Perhaps it was hope, a desperate desire for a fairytale you long ago accepted you would never have, or perhaps it was naivety that blinded you. While others saw a waking nightmare, a terror to behold, you saw a man in desperate need of comfort. While others saw a threat, you saw a man who needed a gentle hand to guide him to the light. While others saw a raging storm, threatening to spring forth and destroy everything in its path, you found yourself trapped directly in the ruinous calm of the eye.
Aemond was, you truly believed, good. Somewhere beneath the facade he wore, the bravado that kept his shoulders straight and his lips narrowed into a thin line, was a delicate countenance youâd witnessed. But as you gathered yourself, scrubbed at your cheeks with the hem of your sleeve and swiped ash from your gloved hands on the fabric of your coat, you wondered just how deeply it was buried.
Village after village had been burned, thousands of innocents killed in cold blood, and to what end? There was no question who torched the villages, not pretending the offense was committed at Rhaenyraâs command.
All knew it was Aemond Targaryen, the One-Eyed Prince - Kinslayer, attempted Kingslayer - who singlehandedly destroyed them all.
Death and destruction marked his path, nothing left for you to find other than rubble and ash. It made you sick, turned your stomach and left an acidic burn in the back of your throat, but you couldnât help wondering why.
As you mounted your dragon to return to Harrenhal, body present but mind far away, little made sense to you. Aegon was gone, still missing after weeks of searching; Alicent and Otto, for all their determination, would never see the realm reduced to ash; and Criston Cole would rather fight, march on with a host of men and a strategy rather than torch villages with little rhyme or reason. There was no plausible explanation for the campaign, no reasonable excuse for the destruction you found awaiting you at every turn.
All that remained was the truth; each and every village burned was a choice Aemond made.
The realization that every heinous act youâd stumbled across in your search for Aemond and Vhagar - for Aegon, for Criston Cole, for a Green army you began to imagine would never materialize - was his froze the very blood in your veins. It made each beat of your heart more painful than the last, each a little too fast and hard enough you feared your ribs might crack, and you fought bitter tears as you flew toward Harrenhal.
Only weeks ago, Aemond pleaded with you. He urged you to abandon your family and give yourself to him - your hand, your body, your dragon - and join his cause, not his brotherâs. It was heartfelt, soft, emotional, convincing. He promised that you would rule as his queen, that your family would be forgiven and peace would return to the realm, if you would simply give in to him. And for a long moment, you considered his plea. So strongly did you consider accepting, you gathered your things and crossed through the dilapidated corridors of Harrenhal with every intention of taking flight and joining him.
In fact, you made it to the gate before the little voice in your head gave you pause.
Alys found you in the courtyard, bag tossed to the ground and shoulders shaking with quiet sobs, sat before the Weirwood tree. With a few soft words, she reminded you of your place - of your family, of your fight - and lead you to bed before Daemon could find you.
Briefly, as you soared through the cool, late afternoon air, you wondered if the destruction was your fault. Perhaps your rejection ignited the flame of his temper and sent him on a rampage. But you believed you knew him too well to entertain that train of thought for longer than a moment. Aemond had proven himself to be volatile, dangerous, but there had to be a reason for the destruction he rained.
Whatever it was, it had nothing to do with you and much and more to do with his own campaign for the crown - a campaign none knew existed until the power he so desired fell straight into his hands.
There was little time to dwell on Aemondâs aspirations, however, as the great ruins of Harrenhal entered your sight.
Resting in a field, not far from the charred remnants of the castle, was Vhagar. She slept, unbothered, by the beating wings of your own dragon - a scent she recognized, a scent she knew offered no threat - and you felt your pulse jump as you grounded your own dragon just outside the walls of the once great castle.
Where Vhagar went, Aemond went - a fact all knew. And what Aemond wanted, he got. It was only a matter of time before he came for you, you realized, just as you realized the choice to join him was little more than an illusion. The decision to be his was made long ago, by a lovestruck fool who believed in hope and happy endings. The consequences would be felt by a woman whose sight had been restored.
There was no use in attempting to flee. Heâd seen you arrive and would doubtlessly follow, so you steeled yourself and made the short trek to the ruins of the castle courtyard.
With your blade drawn and your ears ringing, heart hammering so loud you feared he might hear over the wind howling around you, you stepped through the gate. Despite the persistent chill in the air, the bile rising in the back of your throat, you felt impossibly warm - burning from within, fear lapping at your skin like the hottest flames of dragon fire.
Aemond didnât bother turning from the Weirwood, hands remaining folded behind his back as dead earth crunched beneath your boots. âI wondered if Daemon would dare face me himself,â he began, voice soft and carrying on the cold wind, âof if he would be craven and allow his beloved daughter to return to me.â
It was apparent he thought you knew - that Daemon knew - heâd arrived at Harrenhal. And you had no intention of correcting him as you tightened your grip on your sword. Instead, you laughed;Â a brittle, hollow sound you knew he would see through.
âMy father is not afraid of you.â Every step you took, sword clasped in your hands - clutched like a lifeline, as if you had any chance against him in battle - the harder it became to catch your breath. âHe does not consider you at all. You are nothing more than a pest to be swatted in his eyes; that is why I am here.â A lie, something you both knew, as Daemon understood exactly who his nephew had become, what kind of man heâd grown to be.
The understanding was one he attempted to share with you, one he begged you to see, but the three of you shared a common weakness; love.
Daemon, for all his gestures and his promises, would never love anyone more than himself as only he could protect his own heart. You would never love anyone more than Aemond, despite his flaws and his mistakes, as heâd captured your heart and refused to set it free. And Aemond? He would never love anyone more than he loved the image of himself wearing a crown.
Seated amidst the ruins of a small village, lingering with the ghosts of lives lost in an awful game, you found that understanding for yourself. Though Aemond professed his love for you - and felt it, of that you were certain, even if it was not the love you dreamt of, not the love you wanted - you knew that a piece of him saw you as a little more than a pawn. The war that raged around you was bigger than you, both pawns to be knocked around a board at the mercy of the gods, but he still fancied himself a player rather than a piece.
Love clouded your judgement, cast a rosy hue over the deep gray of your world, and you almost hated to see it go.
Without it, you saw the blackened hull of Harrenhal and the jaded, empty husk of a man Aemond had become. The man you loved was gone, the heart that beat in time with yours was no more. Instead, stood before you was a man who sent a thrill of fear shooting down the base of your spine.
If Daemon had known the fate that awaited you at Harrenhal, he wouldâve sent you to Dragonstone, to the Keep, to the Reach, the Vale, the North - somewhere, anywhere other than into the hands of the man who would destroy you.
Daemon hadnât known and neither had you. But if you had, you knew you still wouldâve flown straight into his trap.
Silence, thick and tense with an energy youâd never before felt, enveloped you both, broken only by the call of your dragon - cries that sank into your heart like knives, plunging deeper and deeper with every beat - before, at long last, Aemond turned to face you.
That searching violet eye fell to your sword, amusement clear in the raise of his brow and the way his mouth twisted into something resembling a smirk. âLook at you,â he declared, gaze sweeping across your armor of red and black. âMy beautiful Fierce Princess.â He took a single step forward, huffing a breath that could pass for laughter when you rocked back onto your heel, and hummed. âI always knew that you would be mine."
âI belong to no man.â The declaration escaped as little more than a whisper, leagues away from the confidence you hoped to project, but there was little use in denying him.
Aemond was the one person who knew each and every inch of you. Every detail - no matter how small - had been committed to memory somewhere in the years youâd loved one another. Though you had not yet given yourself to him, he was more familiar with your skin, your mind, your heart than any other could ever hope to be. If anyone were to see through a false act of bravado, it would be him.
âMm.â He held his laughter, an act to spare your feelings, though his violet eye shimmered with a mirth that seemed rare these days - a mirth you once considered yourself lucky to witness - as he stepped closer. âSheath your blade,â he commanded, voice soft but firm as he easily brushed past you. âI would not harm you, my love.â
Disregarding the command, you kept your sword in hand as you followed him through the dark, damp corridors. There was little light and less company, something you had yet to grow used to.
Though you knew you would find nothing before you began to search, you could not stop yourself from glancing around. Desperately, you hoped for a glimpse of a familiar face - Simon, his men, Alys - but the pit in your stomach only sank deeper as you entered the empty shell of the dining room.
âIf you are searching for the witch, sheâs gone. Ser Strong, as well. They all seemed⌠content to die,â he reveled, tone almost pitying as he reached for the carafe on the table. âHas my uncle treated them so poorly?â
âTheyâre dead,â you repeated, whisper echoing through the empty halls as he began to fill two glasses.
âMm. Regretful business,â he sighed, turning to offer you a glass - one you took without thought, the action so natural you mightâve forgotten the setting had it not felt so stifling even amidst the cool breeze floating through the halls. âIt is a shame they had to die,â he lamented, lips twisting into a rueful pout, âbut between this⌠dwelling and what is to come, I consider it a merciful alternative.â
âWhatâs to come?â The question escaped before you could stop it, before you could convince yourself to swing - to end the battle before it began - but Aemond was unsurprised.
âHarrenhal can hold a great host. Whoever controls that host, controls the realm,â he reminded you, pausing only to sip his wine. âMy brother was weak,â he continued, a soft hum of disappointment punctuating his words. âHe was impulsive and undisciplined, unsuited for the crown. He would not have lasted as king. Perhaps dragon fire was a blessing, a suitable end to his reign.â
âAemondâŚâ For just a moment, you caught a glimpse of the man you loved as you faltered - as your feet carried you closer, as you sheathed your sword and reached for his cheek. âThe villages,â you whispered, âthe small folk, Simon, Alys; why?â
Aemond leaned into your touch, warmth of his cheek bleeding into your palm as your thumb brushed the ride of his scar. His violet eye fluttered shut, just for a moment, before he sighed. âI intended only to occupy Daemon, to keep him far from Rhaenyra as she attempted to take the Keep. He has long wanted battle; I chose to give it to him. He now has a cause worth fighting for.â
With a hand on your waist, fingers pressing into the heavy material of your coat, Aemond drew to his full height. âWhy go to these lengths for the crown?â A large hand lifted to your cup, nudged it to your mouth, and you took a sip without thought before lamenting, âYou could have done much and more without it.â
âYou know nothing of being denied,â he whispered, voice as soft as it was cutting. âYou have been given everything you could have ever wanted. Princes fought for your hand, lords tripped over themselves to wed you; the word ânoâ means little and less to you.â He urged you to take another sip of your wine, the bitter taste lingering on your tongue as he tipped his head to meet your eyes. âI suppose I am also to blame as I have never refused you anything, nor will I ever. But the crown has always been meant for me, just as you have."
Another insistent press of his fingers saw you drain your cup, casting it aside the moment the liquid disappeared, and you flinched as it clattered to the ground. âYouâre wrong,â you whispered, swallowing a gasp as his thumb brushed a drop of wine from your bottom lip. âThe only thing Iâve ever wanted, really and truly, I was denied. Iâve only ever asked for your hand, for your love, for you. But I did not set fire to the realm, to the innocents whose paths the gods deemed unfortunate enough to set in my way. I did not betray my brother, my father, my queen. I tried reason, again and again, and held steadfast to hope that our families might see what we have always known.â
âAnd what did hope earn you, my love? Your fatherâs ire, your siblings disappointment, your realmâs division. Hope is for the foolish. You must take what you want and offer no apology,â he insisted, forehead dipping to press to yours. His hair, a cascade of white, curtained you - hid the blurring reality that surrounded you from view - as his nose brushed yours. âEverything I have done, it has been for us.â
The words, a soft declaration that should have filled your frozen limbs with an overwhelming warmth, made little sense as your thoughts began to muddle together. The ground beneath your feet trembled, your limbs suddenly felt boneless, and your tongue began to feel too large for your mouth.
Focus grew more and more difficult, a monumental feat with every breath you inhaled through wind-chapped lips, as you attempted to blink away the haze beginning to cloud your vision.
âI wanted love,â you whispered, voice distorted in your own ears. âBut do you think I wanted to fall in love with you, of all people? Hope has earned me nothing, yet I continue to cling to it and hope that the boy I fell in love with will someday return to me.â
âI have never left,â Aemond assured you, though his voice sounded far away. âAnd I never will. We shall spend the rest of our lives together.â
As the world began to crumble around you, as your vision blurred and your ears rang, as your heart slowed and your breathing grew labored, your legs gave out. Despite Aemondâs grip, your body connected with the floor - your knees pressed hard against the broken concrete, your cheek caught the blunt edge of the table - and in an instant, everything ceased to exist.
For a blissful few moments, there was nothing.
There was no war, no death, no fire or blood or ash. There was no king, no crown, no throne. In the softness of your dreams, in the depths of your mind, there was little more than love. Aemondâs touch against your skin was soft, eager, as he committed your body to memory. His gaze was loving, reverent. The vision was dark but you felt it all so immensely.
When you awoke, you realized that it was no dream at all. Aemond sat at the side of your bed, one calloused hand stroking your skin - fingers careful as they avoided the tender skin of your cheek, the dried blood at your temple, the bruise you knew was beginning to form. âRest well, my love?â
The dark of the room made it difficult to see and the fog still clouding your mind held tight. Your tongue still felt too large for your mouth, too dry, but you persisted. Hoarsely, you whispered, âThis was a trap.â
Aemond shifted, his weight dipping the bed but leaving you undisturbed as he brushed hair from your forehead. He was clad in a shirt and pants - missing his sword, his coat, his eyepatch - and his hair fell across his shoulders. He was beautiful, as ethereal as youâd ever seen him, but the warmth you once felt was now replaced with a feeling of dread as he hummed. âIt was,â he admitted, no longer bothering to pretend as his thumb swiped at your bottom lip.
âYou⌠you poisoned me.â There was no venom in your accusation, only confusion as your mind struggled to catch up to the moment at hand. âThe wineâŚâ
âI did.â Another easy admission of guilt, this one accompanied by a flicker of his eye to meet yours. âI needed to make arrangements,â he reasoned. âI thought it kinder than locking you in a cell.â
There was no emotion in his eye, no inflection in his tone. He simply stated a fact, but you felt your heart begin to race once more as you struggled to sit upright. âI thought you loved me,â you continued, body aching as you moved.
âI do, more than you shall ever know.â Despite everything, despite yourself, you truly believed him. Of every answer he could have given you, of every explanation - every sharp glance or sharper word - you felt inclined to believe that whatever heâd done could be traced to his love for you. It was untraditional, but as someone who had never felt love, perhaps he did not know better.
Still, you asked, âThen why?â
âBecause you are mine.â The answer was simple, easy. It was the same answer he had repeated a dozen times over.Â
When asked why he agreed to duel a Dornish prince who wanted your hand? You were his, not a prize to be won. When asked why he apologized to his cousins for his âStrongâ remarks? You were his; your family was important to you, therefore, they were important to him. When asked why he refused to offer his hand to a Baratheon, despite the crownâs need for their alliance? You were his and he was yours; his hand was already bound.
âCome,â he urged, standing from your bed and offering you a hand.
Slowly, you stood - your limbs weak and your head throbbing, mouth dry and stomach churning - as he reached to steady you. âWhere are we going?â
âIt is past time we were wed,â he declared, wrapping an arm around your waist to keep you upright.
With muddled thoughts and an overwhelming bout of nausea, you inhaled sharply. âThere is no septon,â you reminded him, blinking hard against the sudden warm glow of a torch as you stepped into the hallway. âNo one to perform a ceremony.â
âWe shall marry as our ancestors did,â he reasoned, waving away the notion as he guided you with ease. âThey had no need of a septon; the Old Gods witnessed their union as they shall ours.â
âMy father,â you began, blinking desperately to clear the haze from your eyes, âmy family.â
âIn a period of war, tradition means little,â he reasoned, voice low in the silence of the ruins. âThere will be another ceremony later, in view of the entire realm, if you wish. For now, we will join hands and take our place as the rightful king and queen.â
âAemondâŚâ
The pleading edge to your tone, the shake of your voice, was enough to finally give Aemond pause.
A large hand lifted, cradled your jaw and tipped your head. You met his violet eye with your own and searched for answers to the thousands of questions that rushed at you from every angle. Though youâd longed for nothing more than to marry him, to become one, you now wondered if you had any choice at all. Would he allow you to refuse, to escape Harrenhal and return to your family? If you gave him your hand, would he truly spare your father, your siblings, Rhaenyra? If you ran, would he allow you to survive?
Aemond posed a question before you could. âHave you changed your mind, my love? Do you no longer wish to be my wife?â There was little indication how he meant the question - little indication of his true feelings; whether he was angry or heartbroken at the thought - and you found yourself uncertain which would be worse.
But for a long moment, you considered his question.Â
The man stood before you was no longer one you recognized, not fully. There was a darkness now ever present, clinging to him in a way it never had before. There was no longer a levity to him, no longer a spark of joy. But for as long as you could remember, Aemond was all youâd ever wanted. And, when you truly stopped to consider, the pieces you missed the most were pieces only you had ever seen.
Vulnerability was given only under cover of darkness, whispered in the depths of the Dragonpit or hidden deep in the godswood. Joy was only shown in fleeting flashes, with red cheeks and swollen lips in stolen moments you dared spend wrapped together. Love was shown in flashes of protection, in moments of compassion. Honesty was only ever granted to you, answers given freely to all questions asked where others received scathing looks and half-truths.Â
Perhaps your Aemond was just that; yours and yours alone, unsuited for the eyes of outsiders.
Thoughts rushed at you, moving simultaneously too quickly and syrup slow. Everything muddled in the depths of your mind, a confusing mass of emotion and rationality - heart versus head. For the first time, Aemond truly terrified you, though there was a certainty in the back of your mind that there was no safer place for you in the realm than by his side.
Despite the fear that left your hands trembling, you swallowed your doubt. âI have only ever wanted you,â you whispered, not bothering to hide your tears. âI am yours.â
âAs I am yours,â he reiterated, dipping his head to press his forehead to yours.
As water dripped around you, as rain fell over the ruins of Harrenhal, you stood in the corridor together. Uncertainty lingered in the pit of your stomach, the question of how you found yourself here plagued you, but the warmth of Aemondâs body pressed to yours did much and more to settle the wild beat of your heart.
Hope, as dangerous as it was, again found you in the ruins as you resumed your journey to the Weirwood tree.
In the courtyard, beneath the bright, full moon and freezing rain, Aemond slipped the Conquerorâs dagger from its sheath. With a steady hand, he nicked your bottom lip and your palm before carefully gathering a bead of blood on his thumb. He then offered the blade to you and though your own hand shook, you reciprocated without sparing it a second thought.
Aemond clasped your hand in his own, your palm stinging, before he leaned in to press his lips to yours. The dagger, forgotten, clattered to the ground as you pressed impossibly closer.
Weeks apart, separated by death and destruction; confusion, desperation, desire, all clouding your ability to think rationally; overwhelming, all-consuming love - the perfect storm of circumstances saw you desperate to give yourself over the flames that certainly awaited you.
There was no longer any way out, no longer any escape. Aemond was your destiny, your lives bound together years ago. The tinge of fear that pricked at your skin each time you imagined the future - each time you questioned whether you had one, whether anyone would - remained, but your fate was sealed. Rather than fight it, rather than run, you gave in.
The moment you parted, crimson staining your lips and chin, Aemond sighed. âÄbrazyrys,â he whispered, violet eye blinking against the harsh rain.
âValzČłrys,â you replied, grateful the rain masked your tears as Aemond smiled.
âWe are one,â he declared, âunited as weâve always wished.â Your hand remained clasped in his, combined blood dripping into the scorched earth as he squeezed gently. âNothing can part us.â
âOnly the gods,â you whispered, though you remained fearful that speaking it aloud might make it so.
As he always had, Aemond dared scoff at the idea. âEven the gods could not part us,â he promised, silver hair clinging to his skin as he leaned closer.
Lightning flashed, illuminating the courtyard - the ghostly ruins of the castle torched by your ancestors, the halls Daemon had begun rebuilding - but your gaze remained fixed on Aemond. Rain drenched you both, chilled you to the bone, but neither of your cared as he began to guide you back to the castle.
There was little inside that remained dry, even less that offered some semblance of comfort, but that was of little consequence to either of you as Aemond closed the door to your room. Every emotion you felt, every ounce of fear and shame and desire and desperation, gnawed at the fraying edges of your nerves and there was nothing that could be done to alleviate your suffering. The choice was made, a pact sealed in blood, and it was clear Aemond intended to further lay his claim to you - as if he did not already own you, body and heart alike.
âI had hoped it would not rain,â he sighed, taking great care to remove your coat, âbut this damn place has never been dry, it seems.â
âA curse,â you whispered, reaching on instinct to untie his breeches. âPunishment from the gods.â
âThere is no such thing,â he asserted, hand tipping your chin to meet your gaze. âWe are Targaryens,â he declared, âwe are the gods.â
Dread settled deep in the pit of your stomach, then - a feeling so strong, you feared you might lose the little nerve that remained. Aemond was beyond reasoning, beyond rationality, and you knew there was nothing you could say to remind him of his own mortality, of yours. So, instead, you pulled him into a kiss.
The future grew dimmer, less and less likely to belong to you with every moment that passed, so you resigned yourself to enjoy the moment at hand. It was one youâd dreamt of, one youâd longed for with each rendezvous you shared, and Aemond seemed as eager as you. Now married, he had no qualms about touching you - calloused fingers skating across your damp skin, brushing across your shoulders, knocking the straps of your gown out of his path.
Aemondâs breath fanned across your cheek, a source of warmth in the chill of the ruins, and you leaned into it. Your nose brushed his, your lips ghosted over his cheek, his chin, his jaw as he nudged wet fabric out of his path.
âMy beautiful wife,â he whispered, soft voice little more than a rasp in your ear. âIâve oft dreamt of this moment. In only the sweetest of those dreams, you were mine to do with as I pleased. I believe this will be even sweeter.â
Heavy fabric fell from your shoulders, away from your body with every button Aemond found. A pool of red rested at your feet, the color of your house abandoned for the love of your husband. But you were not allowed long to dwell on the matter as deft fingers fell to your rain slick skin.
With steady hands, Aemond peeled your small clothes from your body - violet eye remaining on your face the entire time - before he reached for his own. Your hands, meanwhile, tangled in the dripping strands of his hair.
âYou are so beautiful,â you whispered, gaze roving the sharp lines of his face. âA true sight to behold.â
Aemond came alive with your praise, a light flickering behind his eye that reminded you of the man you loved so dearly, and you were glad for it as you stood bare before him. The weight of his searching stare felt lighter, more bearable, as he finally allowed himself a moment to savor the sight of you. It felt as if he meant to commit the sight to memory, to savor the chance he was afforded, and you chose to do the same as you traced the line of his jaw with your fingertips.
Slowly, Aemond pressed you back, pausing only when you reached the foot of the bed. It was low, easy to settle upon, and he seized the opportunity to press you into the mattress. âLie back for me,â he commanded as he began to sink to his knees, âmy queen.â
Warm, calloused hands found your calves, touch so light you couldnât be certain you hadnât imagined it as he leaned into you.
Before you, the vision of Aemond clad in the translucent white of his shirt and unlaced breeches, his hair falling free and his sapphire eye uncovered chipped at the fragile remains of your heart. Hope reared its ugly head, gave you reason to believe this would be your forever - the sight of your husband, gazing at you with a reverence youâd never before known - when you knew that forever was far from guaranteed. The moments you shared were stolen, unearned, and if the Stranger did not separate you, your father surely would.
But every thought, every worry, every doubt - each ceased to exist the moment Aemondâs lips pressed to your skin.
Every ounce of tension, of fear, of trepidation, of doubt left your body in a soft sigh as his warm mouth pressed to your ankle. He began softly, slowly, and blazed a path across your skin. Fire burned in his wake, the impression of his mouth seared into your skin, and your breath caught in your throat the higher he inched.
âTell me,â he urged, fingers pressing into the soft flesh of your thigh, âis this what you wanted, what you hoped for all those nights we spent in the Dragonpit, in the library?â
The request was not one meant to stroke his ego, not one meant to serve as an admission of desire. It was not an idle thought, whispered in the heat of the moment. Aemond desired reassurance, acknowledgement that you thought of him as often as he thought of you, that you longed for him the way heâd always longed for you. It was a request for your love, for your commitment, for your comfort. And you long ago lost the ability to deny him much of anything.
âYes,â you whispered, hand reaching for his - fingers twining together, grip stronger than you intended as you tethered yourself to him. âI always wished you would take me, make me wholly yours. I dreamt of sharing your bed, of seeing you like this. You always wanted to honor me, refusing to steal my maidenhead, but you cannot steal that which belongs to you.â
âPerhaps, if I had taken you then, we mightâve wed years ago,â he ruminated. âBut I intend to make up for lost time.â
Aemond repeated his path, his lips pressing to your skin as he used his grip on your thigh to pull you closer to the edge of the bed. You could feel his breath fan across your skin, warming you from within, and you clasped his hand tighter as he nosed as the juncture of your thigh.Â
Part of you imagined he would make you beg, eager for proof of your desire - of your need - but before your lips could part to utter his name, he surged forward.
Between your thighs, it was as if he was a man starved. Your immediate gasp, your fingers tangling in his hair, earned a soft groan from him as he lapped at your folds with the flat of his tongue. His shoulders kept your thighs parted as his hand slipped between them, calloused fingers gathering the combination of your slick and his saliva before pressing to the bundle of nerves hidden there.Â
With every jolt of your body, eager for something - to run from the pleasure or sink into it, you remained uncertain - Aemond shifted closer. He alternated between broad licks, the flat of his tongue savoring the taste of you, and kitten licks, reveling in the way your hips chased each flick of his tongue. Every noise you made was met with a hum of satisfaction, a palpable relief that he could please you in a way no one had ever been allowed, and you all but gasped his name as his fingers began to explore your slick folds.
The swipe of his fingers was foreign, the brush of his thumb over your clit caused you to jolt in his grasp, and you could feel Aemondâs lips curve into a smirk as he pressed his mouth to your mound.
âÄbrazyrys,â he whispered, breath fanning across your skin as he rested his chin on your thigh, âtell me how it feels.â
Words failed you as his lips wrapped around your clit and his fingers pressed into you - slowly, carefully, tenderly - and your breathing grew labored as he worked to prepare you. The only word your mind could recall was his name. âAemond,â you gasped, fingers tugging at the silver locks drying in the curls he hid. âGods, Aemond.â
Warmth filled your veins, your chest, the pit of your stomach, as he pressed himself closer. That violet gaze weighed heavy on your skin, able to see through the most carefully crafted facade, and each swipe of his fingers through your slick, each press of his tongue, chipped away at another piece of you. Bit by bit, Aemond worked to break you apart, to dismantle you completely, and you knew it was only a matter of time before you shattered.
And as his fingers pressed, filling you in a way youâd never experienced, you could only hope that he would piece you together again.
âLet go,â he whispered, voice a rasp in the dim light of the room. âTake your pleasure.â
Each sensation felt like too much, too fast, but you gave in to him. You melted into the uncomfortable bedding and focused solely on his attention. The warmth of his skin pressed to yours, the silk of his hair between your fingers, the soft noises he made as he devoured you; it all overwhelmed you in the most beautiful way.
The fire in the pit of your stomach grew hotter, lapping at your skin from within, and with each breath you attempted to draw, the more eager Aemond became to hear you cry his name. And as the edges of your vision began to white, as your fingers held too tightly to him, you gave him what he wanted.
With a cry of his name, loud enough to echo through the abandoned corridors, you came.
Fire, passionate and all-consuming, flickered in Aemondâs eye as he lifted himself. He stood tall, proud, and reveled in the lust openly displayed in your gaze as he finally shucked his own wet clothing. His tunic and breeches joined your own garments; green leather and red velvet, discarded for a union that neither side would consider sacred, but you knew the time to repent had passed.
Rather than dwell, you openly gazed upon the man youâd wanted for so long.
Aemond was perfect - beautiful, ethereal in a way that made your chest ache. There was an allure to him that called to you, a draw that pulled you in and refused to grant you leave. The angle of his jaw, the curve of his lips, the slope of his nose; he bared himself fully, no ounce of his soul hidden, and you swallowed harshly as you hoped the gods would forgive you for accepting it all.
âMake me yours,â you whispered, no longer able to remember why youâd ever considered resisting. âThere is nothing left but us.â
One of the most feared men in the realm, quick with a blade and quicker with dragon fire, bent to your will. With an even stride and steady hands, he pressed you further up the bed before climbing in to join you. He settled above you, his hair falling - a curtain to shield you both from the world around you - and studied your face for a long moment.
There were tears lining your lashes, a product of the storm of emotion raging in the back of your mind, and Aemond was quick to bring a thumb to your cheek. âThis is not the life you hoped for,â he declared, certain, âbut I shall spend the rest of mine devoted to you.â
Little remained certain in your mind but you knew Aemond meant every word.
âI know,â you assured him, lifting your own hand to carefully brush at the jagged edge of his scar. âHope is foolish,â you whispered, urging him closer, âit has caused heartache at every turn, but it lead me to you and for that, I am grateful.â
Without allowing him a moment to speak, you pressed your lips to his. The sting of the nick reminded you of where you were, of what had taken place, but you cared little for anything other than the weight of Aemondâs body pressed to yours. His warm hands held tight to the plush of your hip, fingers pressing into the skin so deeply you feared there might be bruises come morning, as he kissed you.
Emotion - fear, doubt, anger, resentment, longing, love - filled the kiss, a clash of lips and teeth and tongue that tasted of copper, but it was all you could do to keep yourself tethered to reality as Aemond traced the leaking tip of cock through the slick of your folds.
The first time hurt - so the few friends youâd made at court declared, giggled about when your fatherâs back was turned and your siblings wandered away - but you emerge beyond caring. And as he pressed forward, sheathing himself inside you, you found that the slight pinch, the sting of him, cleared the fog of your thoughts and brought the world around you back into focus.
As fearsome as heâd become, Aemondâs heart beat for you. The heavy thunder of it beneath your palm, the thrum of it beneath your lips as you pressed them to the pale skin of his throat, was a reminder that there was no other choice - there never had been.
With every press of Aemondâs hips, with every breath of pleasure, every whispered Valyrian praise, the truth grew clearer.
Hope was a mirage, affording you a fantasy that never existed. The life you lead was always destined to be one of fire and blood. The blood of the dragon coursed through your veins, dripped from the slit in your lip and your palm and spilled from between your thighs as Aemond claimed the last piece of you - a piece you knew had never been yours at all.
Every bit of you, every moment of your life, belonged to someone else; your father, your uncle, your siblings, Aemond. Now, there was nothing left.
A sob escaped your lips, a broken noise that saw Aemond pause. His head lifted, violet eye immediately meeting your own, as his hand lifted to your cheek. âDid I hurt you?â His concern was evident, proven as he stilled and searched for any hint of pain.
To lie would have been easy, as mindless a breathing, but the truth weighed heavy on your chest. âNo,â you whispered, swallowing hard, âbut I⌠you were right, this isnât the life I hoped for. I do not want to continue fighting, to see more good people die. Iâve lost one brother, I cannot bear the thought of losing another. But I know that this, lying here with you, will drive them away. And you, Aemond.â Tears clouded your vision, hiding him from your view, as you admitted, âI just want you. I do not want to be queen, nor do I want to share my husband with the realm. All I want is to be happy, to be loved. I want to be free.â
Aemond frowned, eye rapidly blinking as he attempted to make sense of the words spilling from your lips, but you shook your head. âIâve given my family my loyalty, my father my devotion, you my heart. I have nothing left to offer,â you whispered.
âThen let me fight,â he countered, tipping his head to meet your eye. âLet me end this war and give you peace. No more will die and when I claim the throne, I will never leave your side again.â
âA beautiful thought,â you nodded, âto be sure. But you canât promise that, no more than I can promise we shall see morning. I do not want false promises or grand fantasies. I do not want a king or a warrior. All I want, all I have ever wanted, was you.â
Silence settled then, thick and suffocating, but you could see the emotion flickering in the depth of his violet eye.
Neither of you imagined this would be your reality, neither of you ever could have dreamed you would find yourselves fighting your own kin for a crown - a throne. Neither of you imagined a life outside of one another and now, faced with the realization that loving one another was not enough, you were at a loss.
âI cannot surrender,â Aemond finally whispered, gaze fierce - pleading - as he searched for an understanding. âAnd you are right, I cannot promise a long future. But I can promise that I will do much and more to return to you all that you have given me. You will be my queen and you will be beloved, kind and fierce in equal measure. And your family, your father, will not perish at my hand. There is no other path to be trod.â
âOur lives are bound,â you whispered, though a fresh wave of tears tracked down your cheeks. âYour path is mine.â
Aemond leaned in, then, and pressed his mouth to yours once more. This kiss was desperate, the kiss of a man seeking reassurance, and you offered it to him. There was nothing left for you to give; no more fire, no more blood. Now, you simply took the brunt of his desperation as he pressed closer to you.
âI love you,â he whispered, voice rough in your ear as his hips began to move once more. âI can promise that I will love you for the rest of my life.â
âAnd I you,â you reassured him, your own hand lifting to his cheek as his eye fluttered shut.
As Aemondâs end approached, his hips snapping quicker and his breath growing heavier, he repeated promises in High Valyrian; a promise to spend the rest of his life loving you, a promise to do whatever it took to make you happy, a promise to make right the wrongs that drove you so far apart. And though they were all grand, you knew he took each word to heart.
At his peak, he cried your name - a declaration of love following - before he collapsed into you. His head pressed to your chest, his thigh draped over yours, he held you tight and you allowed him. Your fingers combed through the curling strands of his hair, over the line of his jaw, as you stared up at the crumbling ceiling.
âThis war will end,â he finally whispered, voice carrying on the cool night wind, âand we shall begin anew.â
Though hope abandoned you at Harrenhal, finally freeing you of its cruel embrace, Aemond found it. In the rubble and ash, surrounded by the ruins created by your ancestors, he vowed to give you what no other ever had; the love youâd always dreamt of, the life youâd always hoped for.Â
Hope was a dangerous thing, but nothing was more dangerous than Aemond Targaryen.

Simon fucking you brainless, literally until you can't go anymore, and then rubbing your head like this as you pass out beside him.
Cigarette between those kiss raw lips Simon takes another drag, pulling the smoke deep into the base of his lungs. This latest round of fucking was intense to say the least: sweat pouring, moans echoing, parts overstimulating, headboard pounding, all cumulating in a night of rough ecstasy that left the both of you satisfied but ridiculously fucking exhausted.
Copper eyes shift over to the resting body next to him in the bed. The covers are pulled up just enough to cover over their glisten body, but only up to their hips leaving their back exposed. He concentrates on the silky smooth surface that is faced to him as he counts the freckles along your shoulder blades, admiring the gorgeous specimen that keeps his needs met and his balls empty.
Fucking hell he cannot seem to ever get enough of you no matter how many times you frequent his room. The way you taste when he is between your legs as he coats himself in your juices, the way your tight little pussy feels as you're wrapped around his cock, the way you keep up with his insatiable appetite time and time again like the good little obedient doll you are sends him spiraling even just to think about.
Obsessed isn't quite the word, but fuck do you have him wrapped around your goddamn finger already.
And he's more than willing to let it stay that way.
Watching the rise and fall of your back as you calmly lay there, breathing in slowly and steadily with your eyes closed on the verge of sleep, he itches to show a bit of extra care to the one giving her all to keep him satisfied.
He places the cig from his fingers back between his lips and holds it there as he reaches one of those big, meaty hands over towards you. Those thick digits finding the back of your head and he laces them through your hair as you stir just slightly.
Tenderly he begins to comb them through the strands, massaging your scalp with a touch as gentle as he can; that can be a task for someone know for his roughness, but he's trying.
"Mmmm...feels good," you hum at the soothing feeling, letting him know that his efforts aren't in vain. He's taken a lot out of you, but it was worth all the fatigue in your limbs just to get this type of treatment.
He's gotta take care of his princess so she can keep taking care of him; if there's one thing he's not gonna do is let a good fucking thing run out by overusing it.
"Rest now, luv," he murmurs quietly in that low, husky, thickly accented voice, his fingers continuously stroking and stroking in slow even circles around your head until he is sure you are out.
The way you are curled up beside him, sleeping tightly snuggling your pillow soundlessly, he realizes that fuck, he really lucked out when he met you.
Maybe... maybe...
...he's actually a little obsessed.

Red. Thatâs all you see, all you know. The dark crimson lipstick that stains your tainted lips, the cardinal curtains that drape across the buyerâs room, your bloodshot eyes that reflect in mirrors that you can barely stand to look into. Itâs all just⌠red.
You hate your reflection, hate the mascara that runs down your eyes night after night like the blood that covers your once white sheets, hate the way your voice is silenced even when you so desperately want to scream your lungs out. But it doesnât matter anymore. Nothing matters because youâre about to be sold to the highest bidder who deems you worthy enough to claim.Â
You scoff, biting your tongue until you taste copper run down the back of your throat, the tears pooling to the surface against your lash line.Â
âStop fucking crying and suck it up,â Angela spits out sharply. âYouâre going to make me a lot of money today, sunshine. So put on a big smile for me and stop smudging your makeup. You want to go back with the girls who didnât get chosen to go on to the next rounds?â
âNo,â you mewl, your eyes wide and rounded, your heart lodged in your throat. You know what their poor fates will be, and youâve had enough abuse and horror to last more than a lifetime.Â
âThen get out there and stop fucking around. Youâre driving my patience, girl. The men are waiting.â She narrows her beady blue eyes and curls her thin red lips into a scowl, pushing you forward and nearly making you trip over your strappy high heels, your ankles barely able to hold your fatigued legs up any longer.Â
Your heart thunders loudly in your chest, blood rushing through your ears, anxiety threatening to take you down at any minute. Angela would be at your back, digging her spiky heels into your spine, barking at you to move, but what does it matter anymore? Youâre already dead. Whatâs one more scratch to your fragile body that has been violated in ways youâd never speak about aloud.Â
Youâre just a vacant body thatâs hollow and worn inside. A mere ghost thatâs left this earth long ago, imprisoned to this life to bring pleasure to men who only inflict pain and torture on innocent souls. But thereâs nothing you can do. Not a damn thing. Youâre stuck like glue unless you find a way to just end everything. Then theyâd never be able to touch you again because youâd be buried six feet under the dirt. But at least then youâd be at peace.
Youâll never know peace again. Not in this lifetime. Not ever.Â
As you turn the sharp corner, the vibrant red curtains separate into a stage-like theater room. Draped material clings to the velvety walls, the color reminding you of death and destruction. You can almost see the imprinted blood stains of the girls who got dragged away by the strands of their fragile hair, leaving claw marks in the walls.Â
You can still hear the blood curdling screams from some of them left behind, a plea for anyone who was listening, begging for just one person to help. But no one did. Their desperate calls werenât enough to even stir up a care in the world from any of the men, including your awful handler, Angela. They were just a number, a dollar sign to every single one of these insufferable men, and the only thing they cared about was power, control, and sex.
You werenât any different in this scenario. And tonight, your soul would be auctioned off. And then youâd be enslaved till your master either killed you, or you found a gun and pulled the trigger yourself to just silence it all.
Your high heels click audibly against the polished stage, your feet dragging as you keep your eyes peeled to the floor like a good submissive. âKeep your head down, donât ever look them in the eyes. Be the good slut they want you to be and maybe they wonât punish you as much.â Thatâs what Angela always said for all those unbearable months you lived under her roof, and it was engraved like stone in your mind, imprinted words that might as well be tattooed on your wrist.Â
You were taken at twenty-six, now a twenty-seven-year-old fucked up girl who doesnât even know what state sheâs in. Itâs been a year, maybe two. You donât fucking know anymore. All you know is that you want to die.Â
You learned to be submissive, small-minded, belittled, pliant. And the worst part, she taught you to say thank you to your abusers after they were finished having their filthy ways with you night after nightâŚ
You were nothing but a collared bitch who forgot how to say the word no. You were their prized possession now, and your body wasnât your own anymore.
âAhhh. There she is. Thereâs my favorite slut of them all.â The word slut cuts you like a sharp knife penetrating deep through your skin, sinking down to stab you right where it hurts worst. âWhy donât you give us a spin, princess? Show these gentlemen what youâve got to offer. Give them a show.â Garrettâs cackled voice booms through the large room, sending goosebumps down the base of your spine. You never liked him, especially when he cornered you in the bathroom, pushing you against the tile until he forced you down on your knees and told you to suck or heâd wring your neck.
Your eyes press closed at the traumatic memory, teardrops threatening to spill at any moment. You just do what you're told and keep your quivering lips together, your long nails brushing against your bare thighs. The midnight blue dress barely covers your ass, the diamond earrings and pearl necklace weighing you down like a heavy anchor, tethering you to the ocean floor. Your cleavage spills out from the low-cut v shape of the top, breasts almost on full display because Angela said the men would just love it. You hate it, hate her but thereâs not a damn thing you can do about any of it. Youâre a slave and nothing more than a fuck toy and a quick money maker for the sex traffickers.Â
You wish you felt more human, but youâre just⌠not. Most days you canât even remember your full name, nevertheless your favorite time of year. Being holed up in a horror house for over a year will do that to a girl. Make them forget their entire identity. And thatâs exactly what happened to you.Â
   Now youâre just⌠dust.Â
âAlright, boys. Shall we start this off with letâs say, ten thousand dollars?â Garrettâs sharp voice zaps like lightning through your nerves, and your whole body is visibly shaking now. His cold emerald eyes look like a viper about to strike its prey, and his smug smirk makes you want to curl in on yourself, hide yourself so heâll never be able to torture you again.Â
You hear sounds of squeaking chairs, men cursing under their breath, whistles being thrown around like theyâre catcalling you. They are catcalling you. But instead of harmless whistles, theyâre poisonous fangs reaching for your skin, trying to seep their venom deep in your veins, claim you as their own. You fucking hate it.
Taking a deep breath, you focus on the plush of the black carpet around the stage, try to pretend itâs lush green grass instead, like youâre running through the woods, escaping far far away from these bad men.
âCome on, love. Donât be shy. Show me those pretty eyes, so I can see just how gorgeous youâll be down on your knees, pleasuring me with that pretty mouth of yours.â A man vulgarly shouts at you, the other menâs loud laughter echoing around the room, making you want to curl into a ball and die right on the spot so none of these men can lay a finger on you.
Breathe. Focus. Donât lose hope. Keep fighting. The words echo through your mind, but youâre so lost that itâs hard to keep going. Youâre going to die under one of their hands anyway, so what does it matter?Â
âDid you hear him, princess? Chin up and look at him.â Garrettâs tone is stern and demanding, and you donât flinch a second because you know what will happen if you do.
When your eyes snap up, you come face to face with an older man who has cold blue eyes, spiky bleached blonde hair, and a jawline that could cut a manâs body in half. He has an evil glint in his eye, and itâs so revolting that it makes you want to puke. âTen thousand you say? Iâll take her.â A devilish smirk marks his mouth, and fear strikes through your insides as fast as a lightning bolt.Â
No. Not him. Anyone but him. He looks like heâs murdered people, and you have no doubt that heâs killed women heâs bought before.Â
Fear slices through you, but you canât run, canât even move. Your feet are nailed to the wooden floor of the stage, and you know he sees how scared you are in your swirling irises filled with fright.
âAnd shall we go up to fifteen thousand? Any takers?â Garrett looks around the room and two hands go up, but youâre too tired to look to see who they are.
The bets continue, slowly climbing all the way to forty-five thousand dollars. An amount that is insane for a broken body who doesnât even want to be breathing anymore.Â
Men scream and fight, shouting different prices, trying to win you over, making Garrett slam his fist down and sell you to the highest bidder. You donât want to listen, donât want to hear their rambling nonsense anymore. You just want to go to sleep and never wake up again. Maybe then you wonât feel any pain anymore. Maybe then youâll find peace.
More chants and vulgar noises come from the menâs mouths, their hungry eyes glued to you, their lips smacking and fingers digging into the velvet of their seats. Some men adjust themselves in their fancy suits, tongues darting out, wetting their salivating lips. And itâs so disgusting that it makes you nearly vomit on the floor, but Angela would have your head for that. So you just stand there helplessly and wait because thatâs all you can do.Â
Youâre their ragdoll, and they can do whatever the fuck they want with you. You have no say and trying to fight would just make everything that much worse.Â
Minutes go by, ridiculous numbers flying around the room, the air stifling and sticky, your body fizzing with anxiety, a panic attack creeping up against the surface, threatening to take you down in mere seconds.
Donât freak out, donât freak out, donât freakâŚ
âSixty thousand dollars.â Your eyes dart up, panic flashing across your irises. You find a man you hadnât seen in the very back, and you have to squint to make him out in the shadows of the corner of the room.
Your mouth nearly drops open at the amount he just said but apparently, these men are dripping with copious amounts of money.Â
You take a few seconds to assess him, your eyes glued to his large form against the velvet recliner he sits in, palms pressed firmly into the sunken arms of the chair. His body is broad, tensed, thick veins spidering down his tanned forearms, a black Rolex watch clasped to his left wrist. Heâs clad in a white button-up shirt, black dress pants pressed against sculpted thighs. Heâs dressed like all the other filthy rich men, but this one stands out amongst the rest. Thereâs just something about him thatâs different.Â
He drags a heavy hand down his patchy scruff, greying threads shining under the dim light. His tousled sandy hair is slicked back, silver streaks giving away his older age. He looks to be in maybe his late forties, if that. A thick mustache hangs over his plush mouth, but what draws you in the most isnât anything about his physical appearance but the way heâs looking at you. Soft, gentle brown eyes that have no violence swirling in them like the rest of the men. While the others look at you like a raw piece of meat, he doesnât follow their lead. In fact, his gaze never hovers, never draws down your body. They just stay locked entirely on your eyes.
His eyes are soft, dark brown pools with honey flecks glittering in the darkness that surrounds you. They arenât cold, unfeeling like the rest of the menâs are. Theyâre⌠soft. And that alone almost brings you to your knees in relief.
âSixty-one thousand,â the spiky blonde hair challenges, piercing his icy blue eyes on you, making you want to hurl at the thought of that one winning you over.Â
âSixty-two,â the mysterious man in the corner barters. Your eyes snap up to his until you hear Angelaâs venomous words spew in your mind. Eyes on the ground unless youâre getting spoken to. Your gaze involuntarily falls to the polished wood, and you hear her click her tongue behind the fancy curtains. Youâre nothing but a disappointment to her most days. Never perfect, always pathetic.Â
You bite your lower lip in panic, digging your heel as far into the floor as itâll go, your nails biting into the palms of your hand, almost to the point of blood being drawn.Â
âSixty-three!â The blonde pushes out of his chair angrily, his fists balled at his sides, getting frustrated with the man that challenges him.Â
Please, please, please. Donât let him take me.Â
Praying was something you gave up on long ago but at this moment, you really have nothing left to hold on to. You can only silently beg for the man with brown eyes to win the bid.Â
âSixty-five,â the brown-eyed man growls, his voice clipped and harsh, letting the blonde know he isnât going to lose this fight. The blonde glares at him, anger fuming in his icy eyes, a deep snarl embedded in his mouth. Youâre almost positive thatâs how heâd look night after night hovering over your bed if he were the one to win, but you canât think about that now. All you can do is wait.Â
âDo I hear sixty-six?â Garrett smiles, his eyes flicking between the two men who look like theyâre about to duel in an old western shootout. You already know the brown-eyed man would win.Â
The blondeâs jaw ticks, and he holds back violence in his flexed fingers. After a few unbearable seconds of waiting, he slowly shakes his head and sits back down in defeat. âNo. Guess he gets to take home and fuck the whore however he likes.â
Anger flashes over the broad manâs brown irises, and a murderous stare penetrates his gaze. He clenches a fist tightly, and a part of you thinks he may jump out of his seat and beat him to a bloody pulp, but he doesnât. And for some reason, your breath is completely knocked from your lungs.
The deep boom of Garrettâs tone makes you jump from surprise, stirring you from your deep thoughts. âAnd sold, to the man at the back of the house! Congratulations. You got our rarest gem tonight. Arenât you so lucky.âÂ
The brown-eyed manâs jaw clenches for just a second, but he relaxes it instantly. Walking up to the front of the room, he throws on his pressed black jacket, straightening it as he walks past the deranged men, following Garrett as he leads him to the side where heâll transfer the money and make it official. Youâre his now, and thereâs nothing you can do about it.Â
Angela grabs your elbow harshly, pinching skin and drags you off the stage. She should be happy you just got sold, but sheâs still acting like you belong to her. âLook at you getting fought over. You just earned me a shiny paycheck. But donât forget your place, brat. Youâre just a body to these men, and youâre here to please them. Sex is what they want, and your new master will surely punish you even more than all the other men at the house did to you.â
A sick feeling twists up your stomach, threatening to empty your lunch remains from yesterday on the floor, right on top of her shiny stilettos, but you wouldnât dare. Sheâd probably kill you herself before your new buyer even got you in the car.
Suddenly, you realize you wonât have to deal with her backhanded remarks or abusive commands anymore. No more late nights of being held down on the ground and no more non consensual touching from strangers.Â
A feeling like freedom washes over your senses, relieving you of some tension, but you won't be truly free. Not really because you just got sold, and you know nothing about this man. Even if his eyes were kind doesnât mean thatâs who he really is. Men pretend with you all the time.
When she pushes you up the stairs that lead to the back of the room, the blonde stands and blocks your way, an angry leer in his eyes while he skims his gaze down your exposed body. Something like panic and sickness stir inside you, an unwelcome hand brushing over your bare thigh, his hand sliding higher under your short skirt. Angela just stands back and lets him take advantage, and you have nowhere to run.
âWell, looks like I wonât be taking you home after all, but Iâm sure your new master wonât mind sharing you before you leave, right?â A sly smirk curls against his thin lips, his eyes smoldering with ice and mischief, making you feel extremely small in the moment.
   âI donât think..â
âShut up, whore,â he silences you, wrapping a tight arm around your waist, snaking his hand higher and higher, brushing his fingertips over the thin material of your lacy thong. Anxiety floods your senses, panic taking over. You try to pull away, but he just presses you tighter against his body.
Where the fuck is he? Where is your master? Youâre not supposed to be touched after being bought, at least not by another man. Unless itâs agreed upon by him explicitly.Â
He skims across the outer edge of your lace, his slimy fingers feeling like hot lava boiling you alive. You want to run, hide, scream into his twisted face, but you have no more fight in you. Youâre paralyzed by fright and right now, Angela doesnât give a single fuck if one of these sick freaks pins you against the floor and takes advantage of you.
Right when you feel a warm teardrop leak from your eyes and a long finger pull against the thin fabric, a loud smack echoes around the room, and his body is thrown to the ground, blonde hair flitting across your peripheral vision. Your eyes blow wide when you realize what just happened. Your new master just punched the blonde manâs nose and tackled him to the floor, and you canât stop staring in complete shock.
âWhat the fuck man! What was that for?â The blonde tenses up and pinches his broken nose where blood is spewing on the floor in a thick pool, staining the black cuffs of his suit.
âMine,â he growls protectively, shoving him once more for good measure. He pulls himself up from the floor and straightens his button-up, ticking his jaw and scowling at the coward lying in pain on the floor.Â
Your jaw goes slack, and your heart thunders impossibly fast in your chest at what just happened. He saved you from getting taken advantage of. Why would he do that? You should thank him, but youâre stunned in silence.
He gives you a once over to make sure youâre unharmed and when heâs content, he tips his head toward the open door, signaling for you to follow. âCâmon.â Itâs all he says, but you follow nonetheless, desperate to get out of this cesspool.Â
You take one more glance back at the carnage of the room, collecting the memory of the blood red curtains and taking the fancy velvet seats to your grave. The reflective mirrors make you gag, and the wooden stage makes your legs shake at the implication of what it means to be up on that high platform. It makes you sick to your stomach.
You were just auctioned off and hopefully, youâd never have to step foot into this room ever again.Â
Trailing after him, you stay close. Close enough to inhale the woodsy cologne that drips off his body. You donât know why, but thereâs an odd comfort in the scent. Like fresh pines and a brisk fall day. Something you havenât got to experience since⌠you canât even remember now.
The guards at the front let you pass, and itâs almost like itâs a trick. Just one more step and theyâd be dragging you back by the crown of your head, not even sorry for ripping strands from your skull. You tense up and wait, but nothing happens. They just let you go. And suddenly, tears are pooling in your vision.Â
You wipe away the evidence, afraid your new master will scold you for shedding a tear. Maybe he wouldnât, but you have so much trauma embedded in you that itâs like itâs an automatic response.Â
Back at the house, Angela would smack you across the cheek if she caught you crying for any reason. She always said tears were a weakness, and she wouldnât have one of her girls going into a manâs room looking like a train wreck. So even crying brings out the trauma responses. You fucking hate that you canât show emotion without getting a whiplash of her snide demands.
Youâre broken, and you donât think youâll ever be repairable.
The air is chilly, a full moon hanging high in the night sky, bright stars blinking every couple of seconds behind grey clouds. The trees are mixed with a swirl of colors: yellows, oranges, deep reds that remind you of the shed blood back at the house.
You shake your head out of the fog and focus on the smell of fresh air and a hint of spice. It has to be the end of September or October. Maybe November? God, you donât even know what month it is or where the hell you are. This isnât home. Not anywhere close at all. You know because thereâs no deep green mountains or endless forests in sight. Home is nowhere to be foundâŚ
The tall man walks you to a dark black Chevy, unlocking the passenger door and opening it wide for you. He doesnât touch you, doesnât even offer you a hand. He just stares at you with a slight tick to his jaw, tilting his head to signal you forward. Your body responds in an instant.Â
You climb in, feeling the cool leather on your exposed skin, pulling on the bottom of your dress to cover yourself more, but it barely even moves an inch. Itâs no use trying. Heâll probably have your dress ripped off in less than an hour. Youâre surprised you even made it this far without him pinning you down to your hands and knees.Â
Shaking the sick images from your mind, you let the invading thoughts float far away as he closes the passenger door. He wouldnât do that to you. Heâs not like those other men. He couldnât be. He attacked a man for you, but maybe itâs just because he doesnât like other men touching his property.Â
Thatâs what you are. Property. Thatâs all youâll ever be.
It doesnât take him long to appear in the driverâs seat, clicking his seatbelt into place and turning the key in the ignition, letting the rumble of the engine rev to life. You sit back in the passenger seat and try to breathe, letting air pool into your tight lungs.Â
The inside of the truck may be warm, but your body is freezing just thinking of what that blue-eyed demon was going to do to you back there. Panic consumes your insides, making you violently shake in your seat. Your eyes gloss over and then you feel as if you drown in a frozen lake, frostbite making its way across your flushed skin.
âWhoa, easy there. Sâalright now. Youâre alright,â he coos, quickly throwing off his jacket and wrapping you in the warmth, draping your arms through the long sleeves and bundling up inside the blanket-like material.Â
Warm. Itâs so warm and for the moment, your body relaxes just enough to relieve yourself of the onslaught panic attack. Your erratic breathing shortens, and then you can finally think clearly again, breaking away from the thick fog.
Your eyes flick over to his, and thereâs nothing but pure concern laced in his golden-brown irises. âYou alright?â The question confuses you, and you stare blankly his way. Thereâs nothing hostile or violent in his eyes. Theyâre just⌠soft. Like they were back in the auction room. The first time you stared into anything remotely warm since you were taken.
He lifts an eyebrow in question, and you finally register that he wants you to answer. âMhm,â is all you can muster out, your words lodged deep in the back of your throat. Men donât ask you how youâre feeling, so why is he?
He looks at you for another beat, nodding his head once before you drop your gaze back to your lap like the submissive you should be. Donât make eye contact. Thatâs showing control, and youâre not in control. Angelaâs taunting words will follow you to the grave, you just know it.Â
He looks like he wants to say something else, but he holds his tongue and lets the truck roll to the long gravel road ahead.
A sudden realization hits you like a car crash. No more Angela, no more Garrett, no more assaulters crowding your broken body. Youâre free. Of them, at least. But your new master? Not so much.Â
The ride is silent apart from the soft rumble of the truck, tires spinning along the quiet road, moonlight shining through the tinted window, reflecting shiny stars in the side mirrors. You havenât been outside in months, and the sight of a clear night sky makes you want to burst into tears.Â
âWhatâs your name, sweetheart?â His deep, soothing voice lilts into your ears, and you gulp at the sweet nickname he uses.
Sweetheart. The men back at the house only called you crude, filthy names. Slut, whore, and bitch were their favorites. But no one ever called you sweetheart. Not ever.
You take a deep breath in before you speak, afraid your vocal cords will shred apart the moment you tell him what it is. But when he looks over at you all soft again, you break. You tell him your name quietly and avert your gaze back down to your pale thighs.Â
Your name rolls off his tongue like honey, and you canât help but fight the tug of a smile curling over your lips. He said your name and for once in your life, a little part of you clicked back together.Â
Bravery seeps into your body, and you cautiously peek up and ask something youâve wondered since you saw his dark brown eyes in the corner of the room. âAnd your name?â
His gaze flicks over to you, and for a moment you think his hand might fly out and smack you across the face. You flinch, remembering the sting of every hit your abusers marked you with. Your palm mechanically brushes over your cheek, and you swear you can feel the bright red welts theyâd leave on your tainted skin.
The muscles in his jaw tick as he watches you, assessing your shaky movements. Itâs like he can see the pain deep down in your soul, and you donât understand why heâd care about that.Â
He clears his throat and answers, his eyes attentive to the dark road ahead. âJoel Miller.âÂ
You donât know what to answer to that, so you stay quiet and lean against the window, looking out into the thick fog of darkness.Â
After he sees you trying to decipher your surroundings, his thick Southern drawl fills the quiet. âDo you know what month it is?â
âNo,â you answer solemnly, eyes still focused on the blurring background as the truck drives on.
âDo you know what state youâre in?â
âNo,â you shake your head, eyes closing for less than two seconds.Â
He sighs, and you see him drag a hand slowly through his scruff. âItâs the middle of October. Youâre in Texas. Jusâ a little north of Austin. Thatâs where weâre headed now. Jusâ about forty minutes away.â
Texas? Well, thatâs a very very long way from home. But you donât have a home anymore, so what does it matter?
   âOh.âÂ
âHome,â he says hesitantly. âIs it anywhere close to here for you?âÂ
You swallow back a lump in your throat and shake your head no, curling in on the warm jacket that envelopes your tired body.
When you donât speak again, Joel flicks his eyes slowly to you, his thumb tapping quietly against the leather steering wheel. âWhereâs home at, sweetheart?â
You flinch at the endearing name. It sounds like a knife dragging down a dirty chalkboard if youâre being honest with yourself. Youâre nothing but a dirty slut. And thatâs exactly what he should be calling you. Not sweetheart, not baby, just⌠slut.
When the truck comes to a halt at a dimly lit stop sign, he looks over once more at you, his eyes a dark shade of chocolate. âWashington,â is all you can muster up, thinking you owe him an answer. You canât even say Seattle without the word getting stuck in your throat.Â
His eyes widen and something like softness resides deep in his warm irises. âYouâre an awfully long way from home, aint ya?â
Quiet. His voice is too quiet, too⌠sad. And you donât know what to take that as.
Tears swim up to the surface, pooling in the corners of your eyes, but you hold them back. Donât show him youâre weak. âI don't have a home anymoreâŚâÂ
His mouth turns down in a tight-lipped frown, and he looks so defeated that you canât quite understand why he would be. He doesnât care about you. He never will. Heâll bleed you dry until you have nothing left. Thatâs what Angela said. And itâs ingrained like a sickness that wonât leave your body. Permanent damage thatâll leave scars like the ones that etch the back of your raised skin.Â
Youâre nothing but a vacant body to use.Â
âWhat about your family? They must be lookinâ for you.â
Your fingers dig into the silk of your dress, and you almost let them tear right through. âI donât have a family,â you whisper quietly.
You feel his careful stare waver over you, but you donât have the energy to look up. âNo? Surely someoneâs lookinâ for you. They have to be. A girl like youââ
âA girl like me what?â you snap, quick to pull back your reins. The last thing you want to do is get backhanded from talking too loudly.
âTake it easy now,â he presses, his voice gentle and soothing. Almost enough to consume some of your sadness. â All Iâm sayinâ is someone has got to be searchinâ for you. Your parents?â
You bite your bottom lip hard, chewing the glossy skin thatâs marked with invisible bruises. âMy parents are dead.â
Silence carves through the inside of the moving vehicle, but you hear the faint whisk of shock leave his mouth. âOh. Iâm⌠fuck, Iâm sorry. I didnât knowâŚâ
âHow could you have? You donât know me,â you shrug, leaning closer against the smooth interior of the door, your head resting against the cool window thatâs doused in fog and sorrow.
âWell, Iâm tryinâ, sweetheart. I really am. Do you have anyone else? Maybe an uncle or cousin orââ
âNo,â you interrupt. âTheyâre all gone⌠I have nothing.â
His hands clench tight over the steering wheel, his knuckles turning ghost white, and his jaw ticks like something just deeply upset him. Your eyes fall back to your thighs, but you can feel the weight of his body tightening up against the back of the seat.Â
He doesnât say anything else, doesnât ask you any more questions. Thereâs just a thick silence that encompasses the cool air. And the only thing that keeps you warm now is the comfortable jacket that envelops you like a tight hug. A hug you desperately need. But you donât want to be touched.Â
   Not now, not ever againâŚÂ
Youâre almost fading off to sleep, the minutes ticking down painfully slow, but the rustle of gravel stirs you enough to where your eyes snap open in surprise. You gulp at the view in front of you. A large, lavish house with floor to ceiling windows and expensive wood panelling.        Â
Your eyes peel to the thick brush of trees that expand into darkness behind the giant house. And for just a second, you feel like running far far away into the expanse of darkness. Maybe itâd swallow you whole till you were nothing but a ghost beneath the ground.
The truck finally comes to a halt and then the engine cuts off. Your body hums with electricity. The kind that threatens to strike you dead. Joel unlocks the truck with a click, and he tilts his head toward the house. âCâmon. Follow me.â
Your body hesitates, but the anxiety of lagging behind and getting punished sends you nearly jumping from your seat and out the door of the truck. Your feet hit gravel and you follow silently behind him, eyes fixed to the grass as your high heels click after him.Â
You feel like a puppet heâs strung behind him, your limbs moving without your permission. But he hasnât done anything to you, so why are you panicking? And then your shoulders hunch with knowing. Itâs the trauma thatâs engraved like permanent ink from a tattoo deep inside your skin.
Youâll never be able to escape it. Not even when youâre dead and gone.
When you get to the front double doors, he slips a key in and turns, pushing it open with the flick of his wrist. Your eyes blow wide when you enter the massive house. A sparkling chandelier hangs high above the entryway. A marble staircase sits to the right side of what looks to be the living room. Polished wood covers every inch of the flooring. Exposed beams fill the ceiling, and the white painted walls donât seem to have a speck of dirt on any of the surfaces.Â
Itâs only a two story house, but it seems much bigger than that. Well over three thousand square feet. But the earthy textures and wooden trimmings of the house make it seem less like a prison and more like a, dare you say, home.Â
Home. This is your home now. And whether youâre happy about it or not, thereâs not much you can do. Your body tells you to run, but thereâs a tiny slither of a voice inside you that says youâre safe.Â
Safe. A word that means nothing anymore. You havenât been safe in over a year, and a part of you thinks youâll never be againâŚ
âCâmon. Iâll show you where your room is.â
You stop in the middle of the entryway, your brow furrowed at his sentence. âMy room?âÂ
He nods. âYes, your room.â He reiterates the word your, saying it like itâs spelled out in capital letters. You think he does it for your sake, to let you know again that this is a safe place.
âYou mean I donât have to sleep in your roomâŚâ Your voice betrays you. Fear and panic flooding your eyes at the thought of having to be forced into another manâs bed. You quickly shake the awful memories from your thoughts, afraid to slip into another panic attack.
His jaw clenches up, but his eyes soften into warm pools of brown when he sees the distress in your wide eyes. âNo, darlinâ. Not gonna make you do that.â
âOh,â is all you can muster out. Thatâs⌠new.
He nods his head to the staircase, and you take that as your cue to follow. He doesnât touch you, doesnât put his hand on the small of your back, doesnât make you go first so he can stare up your dress. And you canât decipher why he bought you in the first place.Â
Maybe heâs waiting till later to snatch you away into his room, maybe drag you to the floor and climb on top of you. The flashbacks make you sick to your stomach, and youâre having a hell of a time keeping it all inside.Â
You distract yourself with the rustic art that hangs on the pristine walls, reflecting off the marble staircase you climb. Pictures of deer, horses, shiny lakes, deep green forests, like the ones in Washington, scatter around the walls in various shapes. And it calms the anxiety thatâs rolling like a violent storm through your mind.Â
A long, dimly lit hallway stands at the top of the steps, another sits on the opposite side of the long archway that overlooks a grand living room, leather couches, and a grand piano sitting in the left corner, right next to a picturesque window that overlooks a sea of trees. Itâs just as lavish as other menâs homes, the ones where theyâd throw parties for all their friends to indulge in the trafficked girls, but this one doesnât feel like that at all, strangely.Â
His low timbre pulls you out of the fog, and you find him standing by an open door, the first one on the left. âThis is where youâll be stayinâ at.â
You follow him into the room and gasp at what lies ahead of you. A queen-sized bed with clean white sheets and a light purple comforter sits in the middle of the room, some new clothes folded neatly on the edge of the bed. A walk-in closet sits to the left side of the room, and it looks to be fully stocked with a colorful array of shoes and clothes that still have their tags connected to the material. To the right is a large bathroom that smells like fresh roses and fragrant perfume, but youâre too stunned to walk in and see. The walls are painted in soft muted colors, and the lilac curtains drape loosely over the expansive back window. You almost cry when you see a sea of dark trees in the distance. They remind you of home.Â
You miss Washington, you miss when you had a home, you miss having a familyâŚ
âI bought you some clothes. Hopefully they fit alright. If not then I can get you more, but Iâm hopinâ you feel comfortable in them.â
Your fingertips trace over the soft material of the various shades of t-shirts, hoodies, sweatpants, and shorts, your brain muted and fuzzy because thereâs not a gown or short dress in sight anywhere in the room. Thatâs all you wore back at the house, all you know how to wear. And the sight of comfortable, unrevealing clothes makes your eyes glossy with tears.Â
You feel his weight shift behind you, but yet he still stands more than a foot back, not daring to touch you. You should thank him, get down on your knees and show him just how much you appreciate this, but you canât. Because the thought of that makes you want to throw yourself over the lavish wood railing of the staircase. Angela would be so disappointed in you.
When you say nothing, he clears his throat and then you turn to face him. âYou must be starvinâ. Let me go fix you something. You like chicken?â
Your jaw drops, and youâre stunned silent from the ask. Heâs asking if you like chicken?Â
He gives you a minute to respond, but all you can squeak out is, âWhat?â
âDo you like chicken?â His voice comes out softer, more tender. Why isnât he raising his voice? Why isnât he smacking you across the cheek for taking too long to answer him?Â
âIâI⌠yes,â you finally whisper out, your eyes glued to the shine of his polished boots.Â
âOkay then. Itâs settled. Iâll get something fixed up real quick. You can come down when youâre ready. Jusâ please, feel free to wear what you want. Find something comfortable, whatever it may be. All these clothes are yours now. I imagine you wanna get out of that dress youâre in.â His eyes flick down to your midnight blue dress for just a second, but he doesnât lock his eyes on your body. No. Thereâs a flash of something like hurt in his deep brown eyes.Â
You tug his fancy black jacket further around you, letting its warmth wrap you tight to keep away the flashbacks of grabbing hands and torn shreds of material on the floor while your body was torn apartâŚ
âHey.â His mellow voice breaks you away from the nightmarish thoughts. âYou okay?â A deep wrinkle furrows against his tanned forehead, and something like concern washes down his soft brown eyes.
âMhm,â you hum, suddenly realizing youâre still wearing his jacket. You quickly shed it and try to hand it off to him, afraid heâd rip it from your body if you kept it on for too long.
He presses a palm out to stop you and just shakes his head, a tousled curl escaping the gel in his slicked back sandy hair. âKeep it.âÂ
Your outstretched arm falls to the side and so does the jacket to the floor. He pays no mind to it falling to the ground, not even flinching when it hits the plush carpet. Why didnât he scold you for dirtying up his things?
âIâll be downstairs. Let me know if you need anything. Iâll let you have some space. And please, take your time.â He turns and walks out the door, letting it shut softly. And then youâre all alone, in a strange place thatâs now yours.Â
Your eyes donât lift till heâs gone, a bad habit thatâs been ingrained into your very core. Youâre not supposed to look them in the eye, not unless they say. But Joel? He doesnât tell you to keep your eyes on the ground.Â
Slowly casting your eyes away from the cream carpet, you find yourself at the edge of the bed again, your fingertips hovering over a pair of grey sweats and a navy t-shirt. Turning around to make sure the door is still closed, you quickly peel off the midnight blue dress thatâs tainted from dirty hands and prying eyes. You let it fall to the floor in a messy heap and throw on the large t-shirt and comfy sweatpants.Â
Looking at your bare arms, you decide itâs not enough, so you find a dark grey jacket deep in the closet and zip it up to the very top, so no exposed skin or scars are left to be seen by his dark eyes. You still feel completely bare, even with a pair of long pants and a long sleeved jacket. But thatâs because in the last year, even if you did have actual clothes on, they were just torn away and ripped apart, and you have the scars to prove it.
Carefully bending down and picking up the wadded up dress, you smooth it out and run your fingers over the sheer material, almost tempted to put it back on because thatâs what you should be wearing. Not some oversized t-shirt and sweatpants. You donât look presentable, not in these clothes. You should always dress to entertain the men, always have your hair perfect and your makeup just right, always have a smile on your face and say thank you for every single thing they do to youâŚ
Your body starts to shake violently as you look up to find yourself standing in the reflection of the closest mirror, the mini dress held up to your body, fingers curling over the muddled memories of dinner parties that ended with you and other innocent girls face down on the table with your legs spread.
Your bottom lip trembles as you look at the twenty-seven-year-old girl staring back in the mirror. You donât recognize her anymore. Stained blood red lips and long wavy curls, your eyeliner smudging, and the dark creases beneath your eyes telling you just how exhausted and battered your body is. Youâre wrecked. Completely and utterly shattered, torn to shreds. And you just donât know how youâll ever find yourself again. Because the girl you knew before is long gone. And now? Now you just feel⌠lost.Â
The tears that pool in your eyes fall like raindrops that pelt the outside window, your body humming with anxious thoughts and a blur of emotions. And the dress burns like fire beneath your palms; every second you hold it brands another forgotten memory into your brain, and then you just crack like shattered glass.
You tear the dress to shreds, taking out all your anger and resentment on the sheer material, pulling it apart till itâs only unrecognizable scraps on the floor. And you let your tears soak them, stain them just like every single one of those men did to your body. Even Angela.Â
You hate them, you hate yourself, you hate the way they made you feel. Useless and disgusting, a piece of meat they could chew on whenever they pleased.Â
You spend the next half hour crying over what you did, regretting ruining the dress, the one thing you couldâve kept with you, a fragile memory that you shouldâve held on to. But that wouldnât be healing to you. But at this rate, you donât think you ever will heal.
You forget about dinner, forget where you even are. Joel had to come get you and lead you down to the kitchen. And yet, he still didnât touch you. Not even once. And you just donât understand why he wonât touch you. Not that you want to be touched. You donât. You just expect it now.Â
When you finally make it to the kitchen, you decide on a black barstool and take your place there at the sleek kitchen island thatâs swirled in shiny white quartz. And when he sets a warm plate of chicken Alfredo noodles and a glass of cold water in front of you, you just stare with wide-eyes at the hot meal before you.Â
The savory Alfredo dinner taunts you as it sits right in front of you, screaming at you to just take one bite. Your stomach churns and rumbles with the scent of a put together homemade meal. When was the last time you had one of those? Maybe two years ago.Â
You keep your eyes peeled to the polished wooden floor, your fingers twisted tight against the sweatpants that hang loosely around your thighs. Your body is yelling at you to eat, but you canât make yourself move, canât do anything. You were never allowed carbs back at the house, wasnât even allowed to eat until the men were done. Angela once pulled your hair and pushed your face into the floor when you dared to take a bite before they were finished. And now you canât even get yourself to chance that again. Even if Joel never would, you feel as if Angela will come charging around the corner just waiting for you to make one wrong move.Â
   Youâre so very brokenâŚ
âWhatâs wrong? Do you not like it? I can make you something else.â Joelâs voice is etched in concern, but you only have the strength to shake your head.Â
âNo. Itâs fine. Itâsâitâs great. Itâs justâŚâ Your breath is shaky, just like your hands. And you canât seem to look up from the floor.Â
Donât ever look them in the eyes. Youâre not in control. You have no power. You flinch at Angelaâs spiteful words. You wish you could just drown them out, forget everything she ever taught you.Â
âYou havenât even touched your food, sweetheart.â A tear licks at the corner of your eye, but you donât dare let it fall.Â
âIâuhh. IâŚâ Youâre pathetic. You canât even look him in the eye at the table. Not even when heâs standing across from you, staring at you with those soft brown eyes you know are boring into yours.Â
âCan you look up for me, sweetheart?â The pain in his deep timbre cracks something inside you, and your eyes snap up to meet his. âThere ya go. Attagirl.â You wince at the word because it sounds like praise, and you donât deserve that at all. You deserve to be scolded.Â
âWanna tell me why youâre not eating?â You choke on your voice when you see those soft brown honey eyes. Youâve never been looked at quite like that. Not with kindness or concern or anything genuine before. And it makes you want to cry.
You take a deep, steady breath and pray you can muddle some coherent words out because youâre about to spill something very personal that youâre not quite ready to share. âBack at the house⌠they wouldnât let us eat until the men were done. Weâweâd get punished if we disobeyed.â You flinch at the painful memories but press on. âWe werenât allowed to eat carbs. And some days theyâd just starve us to teach us a lesson. I canât even remember the last time I had a decent mealâŚâ
Joelâs fingers flex against the sink, his nails digging into the metal, his jaw clenched and something like pain and understanding lit up in his honey-colored eyes. He looks like he actually feels your pain, and you canât comprehend how heâd possibly know what that pain is like.Â
He nods his head and darts his tongue along his bottom lip in response. âI uhhâJesus. Iâm sorry, sweetheart. Thatâs fuckinâ awful. I canât imagine how that mustâve been. But please, eat. Youâre allowed to eat anything you want now. You want sweets, sugar, greasy pizza? Then itâs yours. Youâre allowed to eat in peace here. Thereâs no rules in this house. I want you to be able to eat. So please, donât ever wait for me. You jusâ go on and enjoy.âÂ
It takes you a couple of minutes to find enough courage to pick up the silver fork, but you do it. And that right there is a step in the right direction.Â
The first bite slides down your throat slowly and when you swallow, itâs like a slice of heaven to your insides. You quickly take another, devouring the delicious noodles, letting the savory taste melt against your tastebuds, groaning silently at what a real meal should taste like. Itâs not cold soup or oatmeal or dry lettuce. Itâs actual food.Â
You somehow forget Joel is watching, and it takes you two whole seconds until your cheeks are burning with embarrassment. Heâs looking straight at you, watching you enjoy from a safe distance, and you swear you see a small smile curled against his lips. He hasnât even touched his food. All he seems to care about is that youâre eating. And that makes you feel extremely guilty.
You take a paper napkin and wipe the Alfredo sauce from your lips, letting the red lipstick smear across the napkin, suddenly fully aware you just ruined your makeup.Â
Flashbacks of getting slapped across the face course through your body, making you sick to your stomach. Donât smear your makeup, filthy little slut. Go back to your room and make yourself presentable before our guests arrive. Another sharp smack stings your cheek, and you find yourself cradling your cheek like it just now happened to you.
Panic blindly traces every inch of your body, anxiety creeping in as your heart palpitates at an alarming pace. You ate without Joel, you didnât wait, you ruined your makeup. Oh God, youâre in so much trouble. Safe. Youâre not safe. You need to run, you need toâŚ
âSweetheart, whatâs wrong?â Joelâs concerned voice whips through your mind, and thatâs enough for you to drop your fork in alarm on the floor, your eyes wild with fright.Â
Youâre not safe, youâre not safe, youâre not safe. Heâll hurt you. Run.
You pull back the barstool and stand, your back tense and fingernails digging into the kitchen island. âWâWhy are you being nice to me? Why did you cook for me? Why arenât you starving me?!â
His body tenses, just like yours, and his eyes swim with concern. âSweetheart, itâs okay. Itâs all gonna be jusâââ
âWhy arenât you using me? Use me! Tell me to spread my legs, tell me to get on my knees, tell me Iâm worthless!â You scream, letting your voice echo around the clean kitchen, feeling as if your panic attack might take you out this time around.Â
âNo.â His voice is careful, quiet, not at all stern.
âNo?â you mewl, feeling the tears prick the back of your eyes.
âNo,â he repeats, softer than before.
Your hands shake, and you need to find something to hold to soothe your whirring anxiety. So you grab the glass thatâs half full of water. âUse me! Tell me Iâm nothing! Tell me I donât matter!â   Â
He shakes his head slowly, his eyebrows knit together in rapt attention, eyes crinkling. âYou do matter. Donât for a second think that youâreââ
âJust fucking use me!â You slam the glass to the floor, letting it shatter into tiny pieces just like your heart looks like. Broken and fractured. You fall to the floor, crying out when a piece slices through your palm, letting the pain serenade your insides, reminding you of all the times you saw red back at the house.Â
The tears splash against your cheeks, falling to the floor like droplets from a waterfall. But you canât find the strength to let them stop. Youâve held them in for so long; thereâs no more room to keep them tucked away inside. Â
Your eyes widen when you realize the mess you made. You broke his belonging, completely shattered it in pieces. He should have your fucking neck for this, and you cower just thinking of the beating he might give you. âOh my God. The glass. Fuck, the glass. Iâm so⌠sâsorry. I didnât mean to. I didnâtâŚâ You frantically try to pick the pieces up, but all you do is tear another cut open in the same palm. And now blood stains the dark wood. Fuck.Â
Joelâs at your side in a second, kneeling beside you, trying to calm you down the best he can without alarming you. âShhh. Sâalright. Itâs fine. I donât care about the broken glass.â
âBut I made a mess. I broke your belongings. And I should be punished. I shouldâŚâ Your voice fades off as the tears blur your vision, completely breaking you just like the scattered shards of glass that surround you.Â
He shakes his head slowly and places his palm flat on the ground, so close but yet so far from brushing against you. âNo. Donât think for one minute you deserve that, sweet girl. Donât for one fuckinâ minute believe any of that. Sânot true. None of it is.â
âButâbut I⌠No, IâI can fix this. I can clean this up, I canâŚâ Your words come out jumbled and muddled, and the panic still writhes high throughout your body, making you want to crawl out of your scarred skin.
âSweetheart, shhh. Sâalright. I promise Iâm not here to harm you. Jusâ let me clean you up. Your hand. Jusââlet me help you. Please.â His voice is calm, collected, and you have a hard time looking up because you know those deep brown eyes will only make you cry harder.
You feel his fingertips brush against your wrist, and you jolt back in panic, eyes wide with retaliation. âDonâtâdonât touch me,â you choke, whining as another piece of glass digs into your hand like a knife carving its way deep into your bones. It fucking hurts, but youâve taken worse. You can manage the pain.Â
He lifts his arms in the air like heâs surrendering, showing you he means no harm. But your body doesnât know the difference anymore. All youâll ever know is how to continue to take the pain.Â
âPlease. I promise I ainât gonna hurt you. Let me take care of your hand. Let me help you.â He draws out the last word, the syllables dragging like sweet honey across his tongue. And he sounds genuine like he really does want to help you.
You have no more fight left in you, no energy to give. So all you do is nod your head and whisper out a defeated, âOkay.â
âCâmere, sweetheart. Letâs get you up off the floor.â He scoops you up in his arms, cradling your head in the palm of his hand. He doesnât even care that youâre staining his white button-up red. If he does, he doesnât say anything about it.
Your body revolts against his touch, but heâs so warm that you donât fight it. He smells like firewood and scented pine trees, and thatâs enough to keep you calm in his arms. You just nuzzle your face into the crook of his neck and let your tears stain the dark stubble of his patchy beard.Â
âThere ya go. Easy now. Youâre alright,â he coos gently, lulling you into a calm state.
Youâre freezing cold, even underneath the layers of clothes that wrap like thick vines around your body. But somehow, the warmest thing right now is being in his arms...Â
Youâre completely and utterly vulnerable but just for a second, you relax into his strong arms and breathe in the mahogany scent of him. The man that got you out before you completely shattered. For just this moment, you give in to what you really need. Warmth and safety.Â
   He feels safe.
And for the next couple of minutes that it takes for him to get you across the house and up the stairs, you fade into his warmth, blocking out every single panicked and anxious thought. For just those few seconds, you breathe, letting the unruly voices in your mind die out.Â
For just that minute, youâre safe.Â
You come back to yourself the moment he sets you down on a white step stool, warily telling you to hold still, your palm open over the bathtub, blood running down the porcelain material, staining the walls with the crimson of your stupid mistakes.Â
You did this. Your fault, all your fault. You should have never broken the glass, shouldâve never lashed out, but you did. And you guess this is how youâll always be now. A hollow body that just doesnât know how to live a normal life anymore.Â
You wince as Joel drags the washcloth slowly over your open wound, tears swimming in your eyes the more he tries to assess it, searching for any pieces of glass that may be stuck deep in your hand. And you donât know why heâs doing this after you had a meltdown because he wouldnât make you pleasure him. What the fuck is wrong with you? Is this how your brain just operates now? After being stuck in that god awful house, this is what it does to you?Â
You donât want to be used anymore. You donât even want to be fucking touched by a man ever again. So why did it hit a nerve after he refused to tell you that you were nothing?Â
âOuch,â you whine, tensing as he washes the open wound with soap and water, apologizing each time he goes over the sore area.Â
âMâsorry. Jusâ hold on, Iâm almost done. Good news is I donât see any glass in your cut. Sâgood. Means I can jusâ clean you up and wrap it for tonight. Might be sore for a couple days, but youâll be fine,â he assures you, working meticulously to fix you up.Â
You flinch each time his calloused fingers brush against your hand, struggling to not push him away. You donât want to be touched by anyone, especially not by a man. But you canât shake how warm he felt when he was carrying you to your room. He wasnât mean, wasnât rough, wasnât even hostile. He was just⌠gentle. Just like heâs being now with each careful graze of his fingertips to your fragile skin.Â
And even though ninety percent of you canât stand the thought of him being this close to you, you donât seem to hate him. Not even a little bit. Because whether you want to admit it or not, he saved you.Â
You donât trust him, you donât trust anyone. He could turn on you in a second, show you his true colors. But again, he wouldâve already done that. Wouldnât he?
âHow old are you, sweetheart?â he asks, carefully drying your cut with a clean towel.
âTwenty-seven,â you whisper out, wincing once more from the pressure on your palm.
   âAnd your birthday? Whenâs that?â
You watch his brown eyes flick up to yours, and your gaze drops immediately back to your lap. âJanuary 22nd.â
He takes a minute before the next question comes, diligently wrapping your hand in a gauze padding. âHow long you been gone now? Do you know?â
You chew on your bottom lip and hold back a tear, trying your best not to fall apart all over again. âA little over a year and a halfâŚâ you respond in a muffled tone. âI wouldnât have even known my birthday passed. But theyâthey were sure to remind me. Because I wasâI wasâŚâ you canât even finish your sentence without a tear slipping down your cheek, holding on for that sliver of sanity you have buried deep inside you.
His brown eyes gloss over into a deeper shade of brown, and his eyebrows furrow in concern as he stops what heâs doing so he can put his full attention on you. You decide to finish your sentence, needing to get it out of your system. Hoping itâd be a way to forget as soon as the words left your tongue. âTheyâthey had me bent over a table the entire day while a vanilla cake with the numbers twenty-seven taunted me while they ate it in front of me. And then theyâ-theyâŚâ a sob chokes you up, and tears trail like rain down your face, landing on top of Joelâs hand that sits atop his knee.
âHey, hey, hey. Sâalright, sweetheart. You donât have to talk âbout it if you donât want to. Iâmâfuck. Im so sorry you had to go through that. I jusâ canât imagine what sick fuck would do that to you or any girl at that. Iâm so sorry.â His deep voice is full of pity and heartache, and his chocolate eyes make you want to cry even more.
You dip your head in anguish and sigh. âYeah, me either. Maybe I deserved it. Maybe IâŚâ
He interrupts you, hovering his hand over yours like he wants to comfort you, but you flinch away at the notion. âShh. No, sweetheart. You never ever deserved any of that. Not in the least bit.â
You scuff your bare feet against the tile floor, reaching for anything that might keep you from tipping past the breaking point, but youâre way over the edge. Youâre all the way at rock bottom.Â
The searing question bubbles up again in your stomach. The one question youâve been dying to know ever since he called out that number. And you canât go another minute without knowing. âWhy did you do it?â
âDo what?â he asks, an eyebrow arched in question.
âWhy did you buy me? You couldâve left me with the blonde. You couldâve walked out empty handed.â Your voice is raised, but you keep your composure from sliding again, not wanting another broken glass incident.
âI wasnât gonna do that,â he presses, his lips in a tight line, jaw ticking with a dark look in his eyes.
âYou paid thousands of dollars for me. Why would you do that? Why didnât you justââ
He stops you right there, a sad look blanketing his face. ââCause. My daughter, Sarah. She⌠she went through the same thing you did. And I couldnât fuckinâ stand by and watch the same thing happen to you.â
Your lips part wide, and a gasp leaves your throat. His daughter was taken? âOh.â Thatâs all you can say for the moment. Youâre stunned in silence.
   Holy shit.
You try to find one sliver of pretense, a glimmer in his eye that could prove heâs lying. But the way his face falls and his eyes drop to the floor in agony, like heâs in physical pain, you find no lie. Heâs telling the truth.
   âIs she stillâŚâ
âYes,â he nods, eyes in a far off place. âSheâs alive.â
   âWhen did sheâŚâ
He takes a deep breath and flexes his hand over the side of the tub, holding on to something solid while he gets into the thick of what happened to his daughter. âShe was taken young. She was only fifteen, taken right under my nose at the mall. She was just walkinâ to the bathroom. It took less than five minutes. And Iâfuck. If I wouldâve jusâ watched her walk in and stood outside the door. She wouldâve never been taken in the first placeâŚâ
He drops his head in defeat, and you feel your eyes widen in shock. You donât know what rushes over you, but the way his soft brown eyes tear up make yours do the same thing. âJoel?â you choke out, tears stinging against your lash line. âIâmâreally sorry that happened. And as much as you might blame yourself, it wasnât your fault.â
He looks up with teary eyes and a deep frown, nodding. âWish I could come to terms with that. But⌠she made it out. I found her and got her out. And thatâs what matters.â
âHow old is she?â you ask quietly, your left hand brushing over your fresh bandage, careful not to tear the material.Â
âSheâs twenty now. Livinâ down in Houston, startinâ her sophomore year of college, and workinâ as a part time vet tech at a clinic specializinâ in horses. She absolutely loves it,â he smiles, his eyes turning into a lighter brown the more he talks about how much sheâs grown over the years, leaving behind her trauma.
âThatâs incredible. More than incredible. Justâwow,â you breathe out, your eyes casted down to the floor, wishing you could heal like that. But at this rate, you donât think youâll ever get over the immense trauma that occurred to your body and mind.
He licks his bottom lip in thought, his eyes burning into yours. And you see it even out of the corner of your eye. Heâs concerned for you. âIt took her a long time to adjust back to a normal life. We had a rocky time there for âbout a year, but she got the help she needed. She was only gone a couple months, but that was more than enough time to give her PTSD and mentally scar her. But sheâs shining now, finally at a place where normal life isnât as scary as it used to be.â
Another tear slips free and splashes to the floor, creating a tiny puddle of your shattered heart thatâs made of tears. âIâm so happy for her. Sarah sounds amazing.â
âMmm, that she is. Iâm gonna give you her number. Think itâd be good for you to connect with someone whoâs been through something as traumatic as this.â
Your mouth gapes open, and you tilt your chin up until you come face to face with him. And he looks⌠kind. He is kind. âBut I donât have a phone anymoreâŚâ
âIâve already got one ordered and on the way for you.â
âWhat?â you ask with wide eyes. He gives you a small smile that curls against his lips. And you nearly sob from the gentle way heâs looking at you. âYou didnât have to do that.â
âYes, I did. And I have a therapist on speed dial. Her nameâs Tess. Sheâs the best of the best. If thereâs one therapist I trusted with Sarah then itâs her. Trust me, Sarah went through a lot of them, and Tess was the most helpful. And sheâs helped so many other girls, too. Not just Sarah.â
Other girls? Did he help get other girls out? You have so many questions. âWhy are you doing all this for me?â
ââCause I wanna help you,â he states simply, his thumb tapping against the side of the tub, eyes focused right on you.
âBut why? Iâm⌠nothing,â you whisper, bottom lip quivering, afraid youâll break down in tears once again. And you most likely will. You feel it deep in your bones.
He shakes his head in response. âSweetheart, no. Donât say that âbout yourself. Youâre not nothing. Youâre somebody, and you matter. Whether you believe it or not, you matter.â His words are definitive, final, but his voice is as soft as cotton candy.
âI⌠matter?â you ask, voice shaky from the kaleidoscope of emotions that pummels through you.
He nods, eyes alight and glittering under the bright bathroom lights, a soft smile curled on his lips. âDo you know what I saw when you were standinâ in the middle of that room tonight? I saw a young woman that was worth saving. I saw a light deep inside those pretty eyes of yours that was jusâ screaminâ for someone to hear you. I heard you. And I wasnât gonna jusâ leave you there to be preyed on by those starvinâ wolves. So I got you out.â
Youâre breathless, lips parted in awe. âButâbut IâŚâ
âLook. You may not be fine tomorrow or next week, but somedayâsomeday you will be. And Iâll try my damn near hardest to make sure you are. And if youâll let me, Iâll see that youâre kept safe. Whether you choose to leave next week or next month or in a year. I promise Iâll do what I can to make sure you feel safe and that you can learn to thrive in life again. Trust me when I say you will get there. Jusâ gotta take it one step at a time. Thatâs all you can do. One day at a time.â
Tears pool in your eyes, soaking them up like the promise of his words. Iâll keep you safe. He wants you to stay, to heal, to thrive. Heâs trying to help you, and you just donât know what you did to deserve his help, but youâre eternally grateful. And even though youâre scared, maybe you donât have to be scared of him.
After he puts away the gauze and the bathroom supplies he used to clean your hand with, he lets you get settled into bed. But before he walks out, he raps his knuckles on the doorway and clears his throat. âMy room is jusâ across the hall if you need anything. Iâll be up, so donât hesitate if you need something.â
You nod your head, pulling the fluffy comforter up to your chin, too tired to give him a smile.
He tilts his head and starts heading out the door, but before he can turn the doorknob all the way, you call out. âJoel?â
âHmm?â he hums, turning his head, directing his full attention your way.
âThank you,â you whisper, your eyes telling him everything that your words canât.
He curls his lips into a half smile and nods. âDonât mention it, sweetheart.â And when he walks out and closes the door, you hear him say, âSleep tight.â
You want to know more about how he found Sarah, what he meant when he said heâs helped other girls before, how he found you in the first place. But youâre tired. Youâre so fucking drained. Maybe tomorrow youâll find the strength to pull yourself together and ask but not tonight. Tonight you just want a full nightâs sleep. Something you havenât had since you were taken. So you close your eyes, focus on the soft patter of rain on the window, put all your anxious thoughts to the side and drift into the dark depths of a sea of blackness.Â
   And then you sleep.
Hot pain shoots through your wrists like a jagged knife splitting you open, painting you scarlet. Dirty fingernails shred your skin, clawing you until you taste blood in the back of your throat. You canât speak, can only silently scream. A muted cry for help that no one else can hear but you. Chains fasten to your ankles, pulling your legs apart, grimy men surrounding you, suffocating you until you seep into the the blackest pit of despair.Â
Trapped. Youâre held captive against your will, your body on full display, eyes wide with fright every time they snake their filthy hands around your throat, hot breath fanning against your core until you scream bloody murder over and over again.Â
But no one comes; no one saves you from this pit of hell.Â
Dead. You feel dead, and they just keep bringing you back from the grave with every touch they steal.Â
You thrash against the sheets, screaming for help, tears staining the brand new comforter, but youâre still trapped in the horrific nightmare with the demons of your past torturing you way beyond the point of pain.
âNo, no, no! Get off!â you cry as you feel a body dip into the side of the bed, drastically trying to escape whatâs to come. âStop, stop!â
A voice. Deep, intense, wrecked sounds in your fuzzy mind, trying to grasp you out of your nightmare.
âWake up. Wake up.â Itâs muddled, almost unrecognizable. But itâs insistent, a loud gong that spirals into your racing mind.
âNo, no, let go!â you mewl, twisting violently in the sheets when you feel the mattress dip down further, spiraling your thoughts further.
âSweetheart, wake up. Please. You have to wake up!â He shouts, stirring you from your nightmare, but the men reach for you, dragging you back under the thrashing waves, but you extend your arm, fighting the tossing sea, battling the teeth that gnash at you.Â
âStop, let go!â Your flesh stings as they continue to tear you apart, dragging you down down down until that sweet Southern drawl that sounds like honey resonates throughout your mind, and the fog starts to clear just a little.Â
âItâs me, Iâm right here. Open your eyes, please!â Deep. That thick baritone voice crashes through your mind, pulling you away from all the insufferable noises.
Your eyes snap open, realizing youâre pounding your fists into his broad chest, barely making a dent because heâs that strong. And then your anxiety races, building horrific hallucinations in your mind. And you just keep throwing everything you have at Joel, tears spilling down your cheeks, your t-shirt drenched in a cold sweat.Â
âThe men⌠TheyâtheyâŚâ You choke out a sob, continuously throwing your arms against his chest, taking everything you have bottled up inside you and spilling it all over Joel, showing just how bloodied and bruised you are from the traumatic events.Â
The stage, the men, Angela, the blood, the torture, the misery, the deaths, the excruciating pain of it all. Itâs too fucking much, and you just want to die. Maybe then youâll be at peace, away from the weight of everything youâve kept resting on your shoulders. Like a rock weighing down on your chest, crushing you till youâre nothing but dust. You feel like dust. Faded, dirty, and useless.
âSâalright, sweetheart. It was jusâ a nightmare. Youâre safe,â he soothes, his calming voice bubbling up and taking some of the anxiety off your weighted chest.Â
âBut it was realâŚâ you choke out, your vision blurring with the salty water that forms in your eyes.Â
A tear slips free, crashing down to his hand, smothering it in cold, icy liquid. But he doesnât flinch, doesnât even back away. He just stays sitting next to you, careful not to touch you or reach for you. Heâs just⌠there. And somehow thereâs comfort in that.Â
He stares at you like a lost puppy, chocolate eyes melting, tears filling his own concerned eyes. And you keep hitting him, your hands growing tired from the balled up fists punching against his chest. And he just sits there and takes it, like it doesnât bother him one bit.
âLet it out. Give me your pain. I can take it, sweetheart. You jusâ take it out on me. As long as you need. You want a punchinâ bag then let me be that for you. Whatever helps, you jusâ go on and let go,â he says softly, brows threaded together, big doe eyes consumed in pain. Itâs like heâs as wrecked as you are, and that makes you cry even harder.Â
âJoelâŚâ you break, dropping your tired arms to the bed, curling your fingers into the soft comforter, trying to lose yourself in the soft rain that pelts the back of the window.Â
Youâre so tired and drained and ruined. They ruined you, and you hate every single one of them for taking away everything. Your dignity, your pride, your body, your life, your mind. They took everything.
âI know, sweet girl. I know. Shhh. Sâalright. Iâm right here. No oneâs gonna hurt you anymore. Not while Iâm here,â he whispers, his woodsy scent grounding you back to earth, calming you down just enough to focus on how soft his eyes are.
Soft. Just like velvet. Heâs so soft.
He just sits there patiently, waiting for your cries to die down, waiting to know youâre okay. But youâre not okay; you never will be okay. Youâre just a tree in a sea of thousands, but your branches are withered, leaves falling, and maybe youâll never bloom again.Â
You focus on his soft brown eyes, the light tap of raindrops, your erratic breathing slowing to a normal pace. Youâre so tired. Tired of fighting the panic attacks, the flashbacks, the pain.
   Youâre just⌠tired.
âYou gonna be alright, sweetheart? Think you can get back to sleep?â he asks thoughtfully, his voice warm like a fresh cup of coffee, his scent permeating around the room, keeping you from spiraling again.Â
You take a deep breath and nod, pulling the comforter under your chin, trying to control the chill that runs down your spine. âI think so,â you say slowly, your voice still a little shaky.
He tilts his head and scratches the back of his neck, a tight-lipped smile forming over his lips. âAlright, Iâll let you get back to sleep then. You come knock on my door if you need me.â
When he pushes off your bed and pads over to the open door, he calls out and says, âGoodnight, sweetheart.â
Panic consumes your mind just thinking of being alone again with your nightmares, your body trembling underneath the warm sheets. And before you know what youâre thinking, you stop Joel in his tracks. âJoel?â
And just like before, he turns and arches a brow, questions reeling in his calm brown eyes. âHmm?â
âCan you⌠would you mind staying with me? I just⌠I really donât want to be alone.â Your voice is shaky and nerves pull through your body, but for some reason his presence just gives off that impression of safety.Â
You donât trust him yet, not really. But heâs got the softest aura swirling around him, and you just know he wonât hurt you. Heâs already proved that. Â
   Youâre safeâŚ
He smiles, running a hand through his thick curls, his bicep flexing under the weight of the white t-shirt, grey sweatpants hanging low on his hips. You mightâve thought he was handsome under different circumstances, if your brain wasnât ruined from trauma, but the only thing that seems to capture your attention is his soft brown eyes. The only kind ones that were in that auction room tonight.Â
ââCourse I will, sweetheart. Whatever makes you feel safe,â he says, walking over and sinking down into the champagne colored saucer chair by the open door, eyes locked on you.Â
You mold yourself to the cool mattress, the sheets wrapping loosely around your legs. You stare at him for a couple of minutes, using his woody scent to calm you down. He reminds you of Washington, of your favorite pine trees. He smells like home, when you had one. Tears line your lids, but you close your eyes and get lost in the rain, until your breathing is shallow and slow. And then youâre out like a light.
He keeps his eyes fixed on you, watching for any signs that you may be in distress. Every whimper and strangle against the sheets makes him jump up, ready to take you from your vicious nightmares, but they donât come. Not like the one that had you screaming bloody murder, tears staining your pretty eyes.Â
Scared. Youâre so very scared, fragile. Just like the glass that ripped you open, staining his white button-up crimson. He hates that thatâs how they made you feel. Afraid of men, to be broken again. They took it all from you and he fucking hates them for it.Â
They hurt you, ruined you. It makes him sick to his stomach, makes him want to hunt down every single man who put their filthy hands on your sacred body. Heâd chop their hands off so they could never touch you again, take a gun and end their pathetic lives. Thatâs what he did with Sarahâs kidnappers, when he found out who took his precious daughter. And heâd do it for you too. In fact, heâd search the whole goddamn map to wring the necks of any man who even thought of putting their filthy paws on you.
Heâs not against violence, not when he spends half his time working to take down auctioneers and human traffickers. And the blonde man that tried to violate you tonight would be the first to go. That one heâll take down himself.Â
He stays up the entire night, never letting his eyes close, afraid youâd start drowning again. But he wonât let you slip beneath the rocky waves; heâll keep your head above water, pull you out, do his very best to make you feel safe.
Safe. Youâre safe here with him. And even if you donât trust him yet, you will. Heâll make sure of it. He saw the absolute terror in your eyes on that stage, and he just couldnât leave you with the venomous snakes in that house. You have a long road ahead of healing, but heâll be there to help you through it.Â
A beautiful girl like you deserves a second chance at life, and heâll give it to you. Pretty flowers donât deserve to wilt. They deserve to thrive.Â
   And you will.Â

Heyyy
Innocent!kook!reader says she is going to hang out with the Pogues for a bonfire and Rafe pretends like heâs ok with it. But he secretly threatens JJ and basically telling him to say the plans fell through and stuff. Sorry if this doesnât make sense lolllll
A/N: i love a protective manđđť
rafe is sitting on your bed, scrolling through his phone while you rant on about your plans for the day and other gossip. he mumbles responses, half-listening as he lets you continue to talk.
you sit at your vanity, a makeup brush in hand as you lightly tap some blush on your rosie cheeks. âoh, and iâll have to find an outfit for the bonfire tonight. maybe we can go shopping!â you squeal.
that caught rafeâs attention. âwhat bonfire?â he holds himself up with his elbows. âthat pogue one?â his brows are furrowed. why would you be hanging out with the pogues?
âmhm, remember i told you last week.â he almost chokes on his spit when you say that. he mustâve not been paying attention. how could he allow you to plan this?
âyou really wanna go to that, baby?â he asks, scratching the back of his neck. you turn in your chair to look at him, a gleam of confusion in your large doe eyes.
âwhy would i not?â you blink at him. he bits his tongue hard enough for the copper taste to stain his taste buds. youâre seriously lucky youâre so goddamn cute.
he puts on a tight-lipped smile, âno reason, honey.â he stands up off your bed, walking towards you and lifting your chin with his hand. he plants a kiss on your lips. âi just have some, uh, business to work on.â he begins, taking his wallet from his back pocket and handing you his credit card. âso i canât go shopping today, but have fun, yeah?â
you nod with a cheeky grin. you ramble out thank youâs and kisses before taking your bag and heading towards the door.
rafe waves at you from the door, but the second youâre out of sight, his face hardens. he clenches his fists as he grabs his keys and heads towards the cut.
**
when you return back from shopping, you lay out your outfit for the night. however, your excitement quickly fades when your phone buzzes.
jj: sorry, bonfires off. shoups been on us lately, not trying to risk anything. weâll set it up another time, promise.
with disappointment evident in your gaze, you trot down the steps to let rafe know. you plop down beside him on the couch, a frown on your face. âthe bonfireâs cancelled.â
he bites his cheek, this time, to stop himself from smiling. his tensed muscles relax as he wraps his arm around your shoulders.
âmâ sorry, baby.â his happy attitude clashes with his words. âmight be for the better.â a beat of silence passes. âhow about we watch a movie?â he pulls you into his side and presses a soft kiss against the crown of your head.
you smile up at him, âiâd like that.â
âthen itâs settled. pick out whatever movie you want.â he says sweetly, brushing a loose strand of hair behind your ears. you blush before grabbing the controller and scrolling through endless movies.
you relax into his side, blissfully unaware of the bruises along rafeâs knuckles and jjâs newly broken nose.
