In 1866, Malinda Russell published "A Domestic Cook Book" in Paw Paw, Michigan. As the oldest known cookbook by an African American woman, this slim volume is a landmark in American culinary history.

Join us on Thursday 27 February at the Downtown Branch of the Ann Arbor District Library (AADL) for a reception and panel discussion celebrating a new edition released by the University of Michigan Press. The reception will begin at 5.15p, with the conversation to follow at 5.45p. The panel will be livestreamed on the AADL site.

It's 2025, and we're sadder than ever!

Maybe it's time for a Sad Bastard Cookbook sequel? Maybe a spin-off for parents of small children? Maybe both?

Glad you asked! We wrote a cookbook full of judgement-free recipes you can make when you're suffering from mental illness, physical disability, poverty, or anything else late-stage capitalism throws up that makes basic self-care feel impossible. Some of the recipes were our own, some we collected from the community.

I think the earliest Barbie cookbook was the Easy As Pie Cookbook from 1964.

Featuring not just Barbie recipes, but some cute vintage illustrations also.

Though the first, this was by no means the last. Barbie cookbooks have been released regularly ever since.

Up to and including the Australian Women's Weekly Barbie cookbook - an Australian women's magazine known for their cookbooks, and most famously for their children's birthday cakes cookbook.

And many in between. For example, the Barbie Party Cookbook from 1991.

This one was reviewed at length by Joe Ricchio, and he has shared a number of the party tips included therein. Such as, for example, pick a date that works for you, your parents, and most of your guests - but any given date won't work for everyone and there's always bound to be some people who can't make it, so don't get discouraged.

It is really, really cute though that each page has pictures of the dolls.

Another classic Barbie cookbook is Barbie: Fun to Cook, from 2001.

This is a much more traditional cookbook with plenty of illustrations to keep it friendly for kids.

Although I am mildly suspicious of one of the recipes for what look to me like chicken kebabs with peanut sauce, but which the book refers to as "dippy chicken".

More recently, Malibu and Brooklyn costar on the cover of Barbie Cooks!: A Healthy Cookbook.

And it does go to some effort to follow through on its promise of healthy cooking, featuring treats like hummus, guacamole, frozen yoghurt pops and minestrone.
