Seems Johnson was forever in Al Green’s shadow. He’s remembered today as one of the most-sampled artists; according to WhoSampled.com, his song “Is It Because I’m Black” has been used on 29 songs and “Different Strokes” on over 330. Syl’s been sampled by Wu-Tang Clan, Kanye West, Public Enemy, N.W.A, Kid Rock, Cypress Hill and others. He sued many of these artists for copyright infringement. Syl Johnson died just last February, aged 85.
