edit: because i've gotten comments on both this post and the one i shared in the subreddit that seem to misinterpret why i made this, y'all this is meant to be satire, i'm not actually trying to 'outdo' the original panel, it's supposed to look like the S3 art style which looks boring and stiff compared to the original LMAO (I even used S3 panels as the base to work off of when creating this) so yes all the issues with the redrawn version are on purpose, i'm well aware it's not as good as the original and that the anatomy is wack, that just tells me i succeeded because it's p much exactly what S3 of LO looks like JFKDLAJFDASKLJKASLD

My piece for the @mp100auzine! I decided to make something for an Ageswap AU, particularly dealing with the 7th division Scars.

This was inspired by leothedino/shigayokagayama’s ageswap fic Show Me the World Outside. One aspect of the story involves the Scars as esper kids who used their powers to rise the ranks of their middle school gangs, only to be kidnapped and brainwashed by Claw. I thought it’d be fun to explore the time period before these events, where they’re all being little shits.

Extra concept dev stuff below the cut:

First, some refs I designed for the Scars themselves! I used the outfits and names of the five middle school gangs featured in Big Cleanup Arc: Mayo, Soy Sauce, Bean Paste, Miso and Noodle Soup Base(pictured left to right). Not pictured here, but included in the full piece, is a hapless ageswap Kijibayashi who just wants to make it through his shift at the arcade in peace.

Next, the Arcade! For the arcade cabinets and posters, some I just parodied arcade games into Mob Psycho versions, others I also referenced other aus from the zine (Spirit Ball Run, Joust, Youkai’s Lair, etc). Same with the assorted dimple plushies and claw machine items. The missing persons posters are referencing the events of SMTWO where members of the Super Five are taken by Claw as well.

Ford: What do you mean, “Who writes sentences like that?”? *He puts a finger to his chin, trying to remember.* Hm, I do recall running out of room and having to write part of it on the next page in my last journal, but… it’s a perfectly sound sentence to me. Besides, what idiot would go into a Gremloblin encounter without reading the advice pages beforehand, and then approaching one?

Stan: Yeah, what knucklehead just does dangerous crap without readin’ the whole instruction, first?

*Dipper, who has been sitting at the living room table in the Shack listening to the Stan brothers respond to the question on their laptop camera, starts to nervously sweat in the corner. Mabel is sitting next to him putting together… some craft amalgamation of glitter and sequins everywhere, sweetly humming.*

Dipper: Y-yeah, you tell ‘em, guys! I mean, come on, yeah, what idiot would just… you know… *The sweating intensifies.* Go into a supernatural encounter and just… not know not to throw water on a Gremloblin? Amateur, am I right? 

Mabel: *Pauses her humming and crafting.* Aw, don’t be embarrassed, Dipper. It’s not like you messed up on purpose with the Gremloblin that day. 

*The room turns silent, except for Mabel continuing her humming. Ford and Stan look at Dipper for an awkward, long pause, and Dipper just sweats more, if that’s even possible.*

Dipper: *Voice cracking.* Oooookay, well… w-what matters is, is we, um… saved the day anyway! And I was the one who figured out the mirror trick to defeat him. The gift shop might have gotten… sort of wrecked, and cost thousands in damages, and it almost killed us, but I figured out a Gremloblin weakness that Grunkle Ford never did. So there.

*Dipper crosses his arms smugly, but his sweating is, yes, you guessed it, intensifying even more. Ford and Stan stare at Dipper even longer.*

The frustrating thing is so many kids think Shakespeare is boring because it’s being taught badly to them. These were PLAYS. They weren’t meant to be read, they were meant to be performed and viewed!! If you read the screenplay of your favorite movie, it’s still not going to have the same impact as watching it! Start with teaching the students the basics of understanding the language, then watch a fairly straight forward adaptation of the work, then read the work, then watch a more wild adaptation that really stretches what you can do with the Bard (Romeo + Juliet, She’s the Man, Throne of Blood, etc.) THAT is the way to get students to engage with Shakespeare.

this was one of those illustrations that was originally supposed to be a 5 page comic until I realized I don't know anything about later roman empire architecture or visuals or art or anything, so we'll revisit that later. maybe

for right now though, these two are fascinating. we have two brothers acting as one body, even becoming ill in tandem with each other, it's giving This Throne Is Cursed. like, the last time I read about emperors coming down with life threatening illnesses, it was Caligula, and that moment in his biography marked a very specific tone shift. I spent the rest of the (first) time reading about Valens and Valentinian waiting for something comparable to Caligula's reign to happen lmao (Dio 59. 8. 1-2)

and since Caligula was already on the mind, I started thinking about Tiberius: I think he would've loved these two since he had a whole thing about twin-ification and brothers and etc etc etc. ofc, Rome is both a Mouth and a Tomb, so it's going to go badly for someone/everyone eventually, but honestly I think that Valentinian and Valens were the best we could've hoped for. like it could've been so much worse
