i'm having trouble forming this thought into words but there's something about melinoë being raised the way that she was and being taught to think the way that she does to the point of not being able to think any other way. it's not naivety and it very much reminds me of how prejudices get passed from parent to child. i keep seeing these statements coming from the olympians saying that the old golden age was a farce and that chronos is manipulating the humans into following him (note that we don't have any living human perspective on what's happening, so we don't really know how far chronos' reach has spread. all we have to go on is what's happening in the realms of the gods and in ephyra). it's all being perpetuated by gods that melinoë has been raised to trust and believe in. i think she could be nearing a tipping point as the plot progresses, though. like i said, i don't think there's necessarily a "good" or "bad" side here, only the side that melinoë/the player is on and the side that chronos is on (plus many of the NPCs that we meet who are generally uninvolved in the whole mess). but there's also a lot that we're missing simply because melinoë is unaware of it.

I really like both these panels, the extreme downward angle on Jade who has the disadvantage of being small and the advantage of being alive and angry, and the close up on Grandpa, both of them lit by the strange pink-orange firelight. Fire and burning is a threat we’ve seen for all four kids now, so it creates that parallel, and also a surreal atmosphere from the composition of both images.

Jade is also speaking in the narration on this page – it’s italicized and first person instead of second, written in her register. None of the other kids have done this yet, the narrator is always between them and us. I like the implication that Jade is overriding the narrator but also the idea that the narrator is like ‘you know what, I’m taking this page off, I’m just gonna let her shout’. It’s fun, and I’m interested to see if it’ll happen more.

I am still pretty fucked up over this reveal but personally I would have done it a little differently – the gut punch of ‘He was so much easier to deal with when he was alive’ (p.920) could have been SO much more effective if it hadn’t already been obvious from their Strife that this is not a living man. Even keeping the original sequence but publishing the pages at the same time would have worked, but sitting for a day between the Strife sequence and that line meant it didn’t hit as hard for me.

I do still have a lot of questions. Jade knows Grandpa is dead but seems to still genuinely believe they’re communicating, and who’s to say they’re not? Who’s to say Jade’s powers don’t tell her exactly what Grandpa is saying or would say in this circumstance? If so, it must be a lot harder psychologically to escape his expectations. But even if Jade’s powers don’t come into it, there’s practical concerns – how long ago did Grandpa die, and does anyone besides Jade even know? It’s easy to say Jade should redecorate the house but living so remotely where mail has to be airdropped in balloons, she’s probably not physically capable of that, and can’t get other people to do it for her. Typheus is a little big to captchalogue and where else would Jade even put him?

So I guess I kind of get it? In the sense of Jade keeping the only life and routine she’s ever known, going through the same motions with a stuffed grandpa that she once did with a real one, because the barriers to doing anything different are so high? It’s really easy to adapt to a strange situation when you don’t have a point of comparison to know it’s strange, and when it happens so regularly that it becomes like autopilot.

We cut back to PM, my absolute beloved, one of my most favorite characters. They haven’t been seriously hurt by Jade’s explosive powers but their head wrappings are on fire (btw is the pointy tail of their head covering the shape of the fabric or the shape of their head??) and some of the mailboxes are tragic casualties of the event, which I may never forgive Jade for.

And then one of the metal worms rescues a mailbox! The all important mailbox with the letter to Dr David Brinner in it! Redemption arc for the metal worms who have definitely learned from their predecessors’ mistakes. This is a beautiful, angelic worm deserving of high honors, and PM knows it, giving them an equally metallic heart. If the postal service had an equivalent for a knighthood for a postal worker who goes above and beyond to preserve the integrity of the mail then PM would award that to this worm. I am thinking about PM as a dispenser of justice – someone with a really strong, inflexible moral code who is willing to impartially punish those who break it and reward those who keep it.

interesting detail i noticed that probably nobody else actually cares about: in two chrono stone games trailers where saru's first appearance is shown, he has two ampoules on his arm instead of the captain band he ends up wearing in the games cutscene

all the other chrono stone trailers do not have this scene - and from what i could find, not even the european ones show it so is really just there!

also, in the anime he doesn't wear anything at all, so im guessing that at some point they simply changed their ideas about his game appearance?? or maybe they used a different/unused version of that cutscene???who knows but it's interesting imho!

Welp it’s no better time than ever to see Zoobles and Pomnis first impressions of each other since, also I’m very happy to the love birds back together :)

Imagine god! Nico personally escorting Hazel's ghost to the Underworld. He holds her hand throughout the entire journey; refuses to let it - her - go as he stands with her before the three judges. And Hades is there for once, waiting for his children. Once the judgment is passed - Hazel is offered her rightful place in Elysium, as expected - he extends a hand to his daughter, who simply smiles as she grasps it with her free hand.

There's much to be said, but none of them speak as they continue their journey. Not that Nico could muster any words; it's not his first permanent goodbye, but it's the last and the most painful one. He reigns his emotion well, he believes, watching with a smile as Hazel disappears past the gates of Elysium. It's only when the weight of his father's hand rests on his shoulder that the dam breaks.

This is the most painful price he has to pay for accepting immortality - watching as his loved ones pass one by one. He's aware of the consequences of his decision, but each passing still chips away parts of his soul that he will never recover.

"Watch over her for me?" He asks of his father once he's able to regain his composure.

His father offers him a rare smile. "Always."

"No, no. Don't think you can just come in here and ruin my fun." The Hoopa shook their head in disapproval. "This is a Journey ONLY space, which means I'm supposed to be the most annoying thing in it, NOT YOU. I don't need competition, Soooo!" They quickly began to materialize one of their portal rings above the unwelcome guest.

Journey gleefully smiled as they closed their portal, "No more yooou~ Have fun in that feral universe! I'm sure the Yungoos there would love to try deity flesh, I heard It's reallly tasty!"

→ Seems Journey disapproves of other unwelcomed Hoopas invading their space... Jealousy, perhaps?
