DC Comics Announces "Challengers of the Unknown"

DC Comics "All In" initiative is bringing back the investigators of the strange and unusual, the Challengers of the Unknown. The Challengers of the Unknown 5-issue limited series will be written by Christopher Cantwell with art by Sean Izaakse. The comic spins out of Absolute Power and the DC All In Special.

The "terror of the Darkseid shock wave has cascaded across the DC Universe…tearing open the very fabric of time and space itself! Only one band of super-scientists have the right stuff to challenge the fate of a universe: the Challengers of the Unknown.

Ace Morgan, June Robbins, Prof Haley, Red Ryan, and Rocky Davis, adventurers “living on borrowed time,” run day-to-day operations for the Justice League’s Watchtower base in orbit above Earth, collaborating with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and the rest of the League to seal the rifts that threaten the galaxy. But a mysterious foe from the Challengers’ past lurks in the shadows, and its connection to the Darkseid wave will put not only the Challengers, but all of the DC Universe on borrowed time."

Challengers of the Unknown #1 (of 5) goes on sale on December 18, 2024. The debut issue sports a main cover by Mike Deodato Jr., variant covers by Sean Izaakse and Romulo Fajardo Jr., Taurin Clarke, and Danny Earls, a foil variant cover by Gleb Melnikov, and a character design variant cover by Dan Mora.

🇬🇧 I really love Sanctuary but sometimes I wish it wasn't made in 2008-2011. You know the dark and yellowish foundation, concealed lips, weird sweaters, french manicure, low waist jeans etc.

Poor Magnus and Nikola with yellow foundation, sometimes even with John Druitt.

Or that horrible blue and black sweater that Will wear.

Is there anything you don't like about Sanctuary? If yes, what is it?

Yes, you read that correctly: there are not one but TWO Merchant Ivory/James Ivory documentaries on their way!

This is in addition to Ivory’s own part-autobiograpical documentary A Cooler Climate (2022), co-directed with Giles Gardner, which has screened at a tiny handful of festivals but – so far – not more widely. (And, no, I have not yet been able to see it, grrrr.)

An embarrassment of riches! Here’s the list:

Stephen Soucy’s documentary Merchant Ivory (2023) which the Cohen Media Group are reportedly releasing next year. Features the lovely animations first seen in in Soucy’s short documentary tribute to Merchant Ivory’s genius composer (and fourth partner) Richard Robbins, Rich Atmosphere: The Music of Merchant Ivory Films (2019).

And now, announced in May, there will also be James Ivory: In Search of Love and Beauty, directed by first-time feature-maker Christopher Manning:

Mini-review:

This is exactly what I expected from Guillermo del Toro's take on Pinocchio: it's dark, haunting, tragic and, yet, somewhat hopeful. What's more, the historical setting allows for a refreshing version of the story that also takes on themes like fascism, which sadly resonates with current times. The animation and the character designs are brilliant and gorgeous, and it's clear an immense amount of love and passion went into making this film.

Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio will break your heart (several times, in fact), but by the end you'll feel like you've learnt (or at least remembered) essential life lessons. Truly one of the best movies of the year and arguably GDT's best since Pan's Labyrinth.

hi snips ily as well! one thing i enjoy about you is. both of the times we have seen musicals together there has been a moment where i looked over and you were mouthing the words along with the performers, very clearly delighted and having the time of your life. and your love for art and live performances has, in turn, bettered my own experiences as an audience member, as well as made me just so much fonder of you as a person.
