I won’t lie your constant exposure to carnivore diet and other things you talked about have intrigued me but I’m currently a poor uni student with no job rn. Do you have any small tips for me on a low budget? I know I should be more specific about the advise but I’m asking as a catch all I guess. Sorry if I’m being a bother
(Sorry for the ramble I get sidetracked easily)
You're not bothering me. To some degree my advice will depend on whether you're a man or woman and what animal products you're willing to include/exclude. The "purest" form of carnivore is only red meat (meat from ruminant animals such as beef, lamb, elk, venison, goat, etc) with no dairy and no eggs. If that's not your style then include whatever you like. HOWEVER. I strongly recommend making fatty red meat the primary food, as well as eggs and butter if you like them and have no allergies. A lot of people think that the trick to keto/carnivore is that it's a low carb and high protein diet, but in fact the key to carnivore is that it is a high fat diet. Fat is the body and brain's optimal fuel source, so make sure you eat a lot of it. Lean meats like poultry and lean beef/pork cuts will not produce good results. If you're a woman, you will likely find that a caloric ratio of about 80% fat to 20% protein will feel the best. It is unclear exactly why women seem to benefit so much from this while men don't see much difference, but this means that women seeking this so-called "high fat carnivore" will have to supplement their meat with extra fat sources such as butter or fat trimmings. Personally, I get beef fat trimmings from a local butcher and cook them with each meal. If you're not a woman you can still do this, but it may not give much benefit over just eating meat normally (although there are male athletes who report that high fat is better for them, so for men it may come down to activity level). My theory for why women thrive more on a higher fat ratio is that large megafauna, most of which are now extinct, likely had a fat-to-muscle ratio that was closer to what the female body needs to support optimal hormonal and reproductive health. In the evolutionary timeline, these animals have not been gone for long and there's no reason to assume our biological processes would have evolved to be fully adapted to their absence yet. That's just my speculation though.
Anyway, for affordability, I think the most obvious answer is to shop the sales on everything and learn to work with cheap cuts of meat. I personally buy my beef by the animal, so I end up with a small handful of the prized cuts such as ribeyes and strip loins, and a whole lot of roasts, ribs, and ground beef. as a university student you do not have the financial bandwidth to do this, so you are stuck searching for the cheaper cuts like chuck, shank, top/bottom round, sirloin tip, as well as ground beef. all of these cuts can make delicious meals, especially if you opt to continue using seasonings (i personally do not, but neither do i begrudge those who are unwilling to give them up). these cuts are leaner, but if you add extra fat (trimmings or butter) then you can still get a good caloric ratio out of it.
if you or anyone you know has a Costco (or equivalent store) membership, you can also buy wholesale primal cuts. upfront cost is a bit high, but the price per pound is significantly cheaper than grocery stores. you can get brisket for like $2/lb at Costco
chicken is generally pretty cheap, especially if you buy the cheaper cuts like drumsticks and thighs. but again, it's very lean so be mindful of that. same goes for pork. also salmon is a really good and fatty option if you like fish.
i also save the melted fat which comes off when I cook beef fat, and reuse that whenever i need cooking oil for a different meal, so i don't burn through store bought tallow/lard or butter.
one of the biggest factors in determining your cost will be whether or not you are fussy about conventional vs pasture raised meat. if you are happy to eat conventional, then your costs will be significantly lower than if you insist on pastured products. as far as the impact on your health, there isn't much information about the difference between the two, i know people who eat conventional and others who eat pastured, they all feel good. for myself, and many people who choose pastured products, it's an ethical decision more than anything.
lastly, again i don't know your financial situation but if you have some wiggle room, you can look into an online butcher such as butcherbox, moink, betterfed, and others. the meat is a bit more wholesale so the price per pound tends to come out much cheaper than buying from a grocery store, however this again, like Costco, has a higher upfront cost.
i hope this information is helpful! let me know if you have any other questions and i'll do my best to answer them (hopefully with less rambling next time).

Because I can’t miss an opportunity to follow a trend, I was able to capture my 37 weeks in vs 37 weeks out photo on Friday. I’d say it feels weird that erp’s been here the same length of time as my pregnancy but my pregnancy feels much shorter than the lifetime we’ve had her with us these past eight months. She’s currently growling and rolling around in her crib. I’m so smitten!
I’ve been on a walk the last three days in a row and it feels great! Loving the cooler weather we’re experiencing, it’s getting me anxiously excited for fall walks!
Erp fell asleep in her jumperoo agaiiiin!  Can’t handle the sleepy cuteness.
Showing off my excitement for these pants with pockets!!  I’ve made excuses to wear them the last three days despite having clean non-pocketed pants to wear. Yep, I’m disgusting.
When I was watching JVN-lympics I was reminded that he is a brand sponsor for Biossance and since my acne has been extra bad lately I decided to incorporate some self-care and start a skincare routine. I ordered their Skin-Balancing Starter Kit and began Saturday morning. I’m loving the process itself and feeling like such a fancy mom adding all the creams and serums to my face. Fun fact, I learned today while out on my afternoon 5 mile walk that these products contain zero sunscreen (unlike my normal products that all have at least 30 spf). So now I have a lobster face and will have to buy a sunscreen from the line. Bah. Nickle and diming me up in here (but yay moar new things)!
My last few dinners have been really calorie-laden (wings, burnt ends brisket) so it’s not surprising my weight jumped even though I was practicing restraint.  How does one only eat eight delicious Costco garlic wings?!?  With so much will power.
Successfully used my new ice cream maker (thanks to being inspired by @zerocarb as always)!  I’ll make a separate post on this since I ran out of photo room, but I’m happy to say that I just finished eating homemade vanilla keto ice cream! And it wasn’t awful! Looking forward to perfecting the recipe and trying out all the things!
And now to finish out the evening watching as many episodes of Younger that I can fit into three hours. (nine episodes?? maybe, we’ll see)

This is a personal post, so please feel free to pass on by without reading.
(Edited 9/24 to add brand)
I normally do not post pictures of my food. Nobody really cares what I’m eating. So why am I making this post? Because I have an emotional connection to this sandwich.
Tumblr media
Two years ago I was borderline diabetic, and started on a Keto based program. The food that I missed the most was bread. I tried several recipes for keto friendly bread, and let me tell you, the pictures lie! Those recipes create a dense egg loaf, not a fluffy slice of heaven.
It didn’t matter how I modified them, nothing came close. The texture, the taste, the obnoxious amount of effort that had to go into making it, was ALL WRONG.
Recently my sister-in-law found keto friendly bread that you can buy in the store (pictured below). I literally cried tears of joy, when I sank my teeth into my first grilled cheese sandwich in two fucking years!!!!
My numbers are still good, and I have no side effects from eating it. This stuff tastes exactly like bread, toasts like bread, and I will hoard loaves of it in my freezer until my dying day.
Tumblr media
The brand is Natural Ovens. I don’t have a list of stores where it is available, but my sister-in-law found it at Costco. It was about $5 for a 2-pack, so it’s a bit pricey, but for me it’s worth it. There are 15 slices per loaf.
Tumblr media
I ate the first sandwich and then watched my numbers for 4 days before eating any more. They stayed consistent and I didn’t have any issues. I don’t eat it everyday. I didn’t want to push my luck. :)

I made these brownies tonight, and I think they’re the best Keto brownies I’ve ever had. I simplified the process a bit and just mixed all the dry ingredients, set aside, then mixed all the wet in the stand mixer and then added the dry (instead of her instructions of wet, dry, and more wet) only saving the melted chocolate until the end (which I think seized a little in the microwave but it was fine). And also I added a cup of chopped pecans.
I opted to use the oat fiber, left out the coffee, and I used plain erythritol for the granulated and liquid stevia for the liquid sweetener, and I used Lily’s semi sweet chips for the melted chocolate because it’s what I had.
The recipe was from a book at Costco called Keto Gatherings by Kristie Sullivan. I stood there and took pics of a few pages instead of buying the book, cause I’m poor.
They were moist and not chalky, and didn’t have the cooling thing from the erythritol. Give them a try!

Keto question: do you buy shrimp cocktail for hubs or do you buy shrimp, boil it and keep in fridge for him? I am doing way more prep work for his diet than I want to.
I buy it at Costco, along with rotisserie chicken and tubs of hummus. They also have pork rinds, which are tasty with Mexican refried beans.
Oh, and they had a keto pancake mix today. I haven’ tried it yet, but it’s probably good.

Broccoli Salad Ingredients 1lb Broccoli cut into small florets 1/2 - 1 lb bacon (depends on type and taste. I used 1/2 lb from a big bag of chewy bacon bits I got at Costco) 1/2 red onion, chopped into 1/2" pieces 2 cups shredded cheddar (I buy Darigold's medium cheddar blocks and shred because they're 0 carb) Dressing Ingredients 3/4 cup mayo 1/2 cup sour cream 1/4 cup Allulose 1 tsp apple cider vinegar 1/2 tsp salt Directions Add broccoli, bacon, onion and cheese to a large bowl. In another bowl, add all dressing ingredients and mix well. Combine both bowls and enjoy! Found this recipe on keto recipes for beginners by Ferguson Mark on Facebook. https://www.instagram.com/p/CeXCn5tvM2O/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Keto at Costco – Costco Keto Shopping List
What to Buy for Keto at Costco
People in the keto community love watching grocery hauls, fridge tours, or Days of Eating vlogs because they are easy ways to find inspiration and discover new meal ideas. Come grocery shopping with us and check out our Top 10 Keto Costco Buys.
Costco is one of our favorite places for high quality brands for low prices. If you’re feeding a lot of people, they have tons of great keto options to stock up on in bulk, from the staples to the specialty snacks. We’ll go through all the aisles to show you what’s keto friendly and what’s not.
Top 10 Costco Keto Buys
Grab a pen and paper! It’s time to make your next Costco shopping list.
1. Costco Meat
Some people argue the keto diet is expensive because meat is pricey, but not when you’re shopping at Costco. USDA Prime beef is good quality and has a low price, so stock up your freezer with fatty cuts of steak and ground beef. This beef brisket was only $3.79/lb which is a great deal.
Don’t forget to grab some Kiolbassa Smoked Sausages for quick meals throughout the week. They’ve got perfect keto macros and are delicious.
# USDA Prime Beef
# Kiolbassa Smoked Sausages
# Organic Whole Chickens – great for bone broth!
# Uncured Bacon
# Pork Belly
2. Costco Seafood
If you’re like most Americans, you’re probably not eating enough Omega-3 fatty acids which are mostly found in wild caught fish. Matt likes to incorporate some seafood into his meals to up his fat content and balance his Omega Fatty acid ratio. Costco carries a few great options.
# Wild Planet Canned Sardines
# Smoked Salmon (look for brands that don’t use sugar)
The smoked salmon from Costco was $15 per pound, which sounds expensive, but it’s cheaper than other grocery stores. A lot of smoked salmon is cured with sugar, so make sure to read the ingredient label. Make our Keto Bagels then top them with cream cheese and smoked salmon for a low-carb Lox sandwich!
3. Keto Dairy
Whether you’re looking for affordable or high quality and raw, Costco has the dairy for you and your keto diet.
# Heavy Whipping Cream
# Bulk Parmesan
# Bulk Feta
# Bulk Cheddar
# Raw Comte Cheese
# Raw P’tit Basque
Comté Cheese is made from raw milk, which is easier to digest and is full of probiotics. It is also Megha’s all-time favorite. This delicious, one pound brick from Costco was only $10.00 and aged for eight months. (The longer it has been aged, the better!) Megha’s perfect night is munching on a cheeseboard, enjoying some wine, and hanging out with Matt and their fur babies. Add some olives, nuts, and berries to your cheeseboard for a delicious keto appetizer.
4. Keto Snacks
If you’re looking for a few snacks to take on the road with you or enjoy at the movie theater, Costco has keto snacks galore. Remember to avoid anything containing maltitol or IMO fiber. Here are some great snack options.
# Kirkland Protein bars – Similar to a Quest bar, but cheaper.
Make sure to buy the one that is sweetened with erythritol (Kirkland Signature Protein Bars), and not maltitol, which can spike your blood sugar levels. Just read the ingredient list to know for sure!
# Cheese Crisps like Cello Whisps or Moon Cheese – Crunchy and salty!
# Nuts in bulk
5. Keto Baking Ingredients
You don’t have to live live without sweet treats and home baking when on a keto diet. Luckily Costco has low-carb baking ingredients you can find at great prices like Kirkland Almond Flour and Hemp Hearts.
We love hemp hearts for their low-carb, high-fat macro ratio. They are perfect for keto and a staple food for many vegan and vegetarian diets that rely on plant sources for their protein and fats. You can score a 24 oz. bag of hemp hearts from Costco for just $9.00!
Use Almond Flour to Make:
# Almond Ricotta Cookies
# Keto Cheesy keto Garlic bread
# Keto Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies
# Hundreds more recipes using almond flour!
Use Hemp Hearts to make:
# Overnight Keto “Oatmeal”
# Keto Vegan Breakfast Protein Bowl
# Keto Vegan Meal Replacement Bars
6. Costco Fats & Oils
Fats and oils are an obvious staple on the keto diet, so buying in bulk at Costco is the way to go.
# Kerry Gold Butter – Grass-fed is higher in Vitamin A
Costco has the best deal for Kerry Gold Butter, so stock up. It’s only $11.00 for four bars, so we like to get three to six cases. We prefer to buy unsalted butter so we can have more control of how salty our recipes turn out. Try our favorite butter recipes, Bulletproof Coffee and Ooey Gooey Butter Cake!
# Ghee – A dairy free alternative to butter.
Ghee is just clarified butter, which means the fat has been separated from the milk, making it lactose-free. We blend it into our bulletproof coffees and use it in cooking. The Ghee we buy at Costco has good flavor and is cheap, just $19.00 for 56 oz. You can also find it at South Asian food stores for a good price!
# Coconut Oil
When buying coconut oil, we look for unrefined and cold-pressed, which just means they didn’t use high heat or chemicals to extract the oil from the coconut. High heat tends to damage the nutrients in healthy oils. We use it for frying, but it is a great substitute for butter in any recipe if you want to make it dairy-free. Try coconut oil in our Coconut Fat Bombs and Homemade Almond Joys!
# Avocado Oil
# Olive Oil
# Chosen Foods Avocado Oil Mayonnaise is an amazing score at Costco.
Megha eats mayonnaise every single day in her Egg Salad, so she needs to keep the fridge stocked. She used to eat Hellman’s Mayonnaise, but since making the decision to cut refined vegetable oils like soybean oil and canola oil from her diet, she likes to buy from Chosen Foods. They make their sauces with avocado oil and coconut oil. (Megha doesn’t recommend the coconut oil one!) Remember to always read the ingredient label to know what’s in your sauce!
7. Keto Drinks at Costco
Costco carries all kinds of drinks, but of course we’re on the hunt for sugar-free options. Try the Zip-Fizz!
Megha’s favorite pre-workout is Zipfizz, not only because it’s delicious, but it contains 1000mg of potassium per packet and a dose of caffeine. It’s important to replenish your electrolytes like potassium, sodium, and magnesium while on a keto diet because your body isn’t holding onto as much fluid as it usually does. As your body flushes out water, it flushes out the electrolytes with it, which can make you feel weak, tired, groggy, and even give you muscle cramps.
You can also grab some diet drinks, sparkling water, or even some coffee for making your bulletproof coffee.
POWDERED BONE BROTH
If you can’t be bothered to make your own bone broth, but want to experience some of its gut-healing benefits, then we recommend LonoLife for their shelf-stable bone broth packets. The chicken flavor is our favorite and the Costco deal works out to be about $1.00/packet. If you do want to try making your own bone broth, try our Instant Pot Bone Broth recipe!
8. Keto Produce
We don’t like to buy a ton of produce from Costco since we have a small household and can’t eat that many vegetables quick enough, but there are some great options for people following a keto diet.
# Mushrooms
# Avocados
# Organic Salad Mix
# Frozen Cauliflower Rice
9. Keto Nuts and Seeds
Nuts are a great addition to any keto diet and can crush a chip craving in a hurry. Most nuts are high in fat, so the trick is buying the ones that are also low in carbs. Costco has some options.
# Macadamia Nuts
# Walnuts
# Almonds
# Pecans
# Pumpkin Seeds
10. Costco Eggs in Bulk
We’re going to give eggs their very own category since they’re such a nutrient powerhouse and are the perfect keto food. Costco offers eggs in large cartons, not just your standard dozen carton. Use them in Breakfast Casseroles, baking, Mug Cakes and just as a quick meal. Eggs are everything.
Sweeteners to Avoid at Costco!
Does natural mean sugar-free? No! Here are some sweeteners you will encounter at the grocery store, but should avoid!
1. Agave Syrup: This is pure sugar.
2. Coconut Sugar: Also just another form of sugar.
3. Stevia in the Raw: The first ingredient is cane sugar, which is pure sugar.
4. Splenda: This is okay in small amounts, like a packet in your coffee. But with ingredients like dextrose and maltodextrin, it’s best to stay away from consuming this in large amounts.
In Summary
Costco is one of our top stores to buy the necessities! They have so many cheap options that you can buy in bulk so they last a while! This was our list of the top 10 things to buy at Costco for keto, as well as a few things to stay away from.
1. Costco Meat
2. Costco Seafood
3. Keto Dairy
4. Keto Snacks
5. Keto Baking Ingredients
6. Fats & Oils
7. Keto Drinks
8. Produce
9. Keto Nuts & Seeds
10. Costco Eggs
We also added many extra things that you can buy at Costco for keto!
We were blown away by how many new products Costco was carrying on our last grocery haul, so be sure to check it out and see what’s new in your store! Comment below with your favorite keto grocery items from Costco!

This week is my last week working part time remotely 😭.
I'm going to desperately miss the days I don't have to leave the house but (amazingly) I'm ready to have a work/home separation. I've been feeling like a worthless employee lately and even though I *know* that's not the case my extreme guilt needs to not wonder what people are thinking I'm doing while working from home (even though I've been extremely productive).
I made the keto cookies @kelleyish posted about! They're dangerously tasty but did take me two days to make (because life) so I doubt they'll be something I make frequently. I need to treat them like a fat bomb so I don't eat them all at once.
When prepping for this recipe I had erythritol and xantham gum shipped to me but the erythritol bag split open spilling sugar alllll up inside the box. Amazon shipped me a new four pound bag the next day so now I'm swimming in the stuff.
Yes, Kevin and I did go to Costco to buy toilet paper yesterday. We're one of those. But we didn't go crazy and only bought one pack although we did stock the house up with essentials just in case we need to live the quarantined introvert life. It was our most expensive Costco trip yet, but on top of doomsday prep purchases we also hadn't been in several months so it was more than time.
I've been on several walks the last few weeks and every time I go out I have such an enjoyable experience. Need to remember this whenever I try to convince myself against getting out the door. Especially now that the sun will be out later I'm looking forward to incorporating walks back into my regular routine. Hoping that Kevin can do daycare pick up today so I can get outside and enjoy the 70 degree weather after work tonight!
Here's to a delightful week to us all!

Got these at a gas station in a bitty little Kansas town. It’s like they figured out how to transform garlic knots into pretzels. With a little tang, a little spice or mustard or something. So good.
They also had honest to god sour pickles (!!!!) and this thing called a cheese sammich, which was just nice sausage sliced thin in layers of nice cheese. Just meat and cheese packaged in a sandwich shape, sealed in plastic. And, like the pickles and pretzels, it was freakin terrific.
I know I said once that the perfect interstate road trip food was Dr Pepper and a 5 pound bag of chocolate cinnamon bears from Costco, but I’m mostly off sugar now so that’s a no-go, and this stuff is so good that it’s my new holy grail snack food. I haven’t really found any non-sugary thing that I’ve much liked til now, so I’m pretty happy with this discovery.
(I really, truly feel better, look better, have less pain, less lupus / thyroid puffiness, more stable moods and energy off sugar. I even went down 2 sizes, not changing my diet or exercise at all, just cutting out desserts and treats. Which SUUUUCKS because I didn’t think it would make that big a difference. For 10 years, I tried paleo, Zone, no carb, keto, vegetarian, vegan, dairy free…all of it, all for a decent amount of time, and none of it made a huge difference in my health. But the thing I love most in all the world, THAT’S the goddamm thing I have to give up, that’s what really works for me and my specific stupid body. Utterly unfair.
It took about a YEAR to stop the sugar cravings, headaches, shakes, etc. They said a month or two. Nope. No. At least a year, probably longer. And I still want it emotionally. I literally dream about candy sometimes. Which I shouldn’t share because that’s pitiful and I’m not three, but I do. I even had a dream that I was making hamburgers for my kids and I got big chocolate bars and melted them on top of the patties instead of cheese. Awful. I dream that I’m cooking desserts, or I’m buying candy at the store. Dreaming about my drug of choice, like an addict. Almost 2 years sugar-free, or at least sugar-bomb free, and I still do this. [Don’t @me about processed foods that add sugar, or about carbs. For real. Dont. I’m working on my own little junky self, on my personal specific little junky thing. Right now, this is working. For me. Maybe I’ll adjust later, maybe not. I’m not telling anyone to diet, or cut out dessert. Have a bite on my behalf, like, “This one’s for the wretched bitch SixStrongHands, too bad for her dumbass,” the the next time you eat something wonderful. Like sincerely, enjoy yourself, I’m happy for you. Life is frequently rotten, and chocolate, cake, pie, and even drugstore candies are some of the reliably great things. I don’t mean to act like an alcoholic at a wine tasting. And I know about glucose levels and simple and complex sugars and carbs; I have a tiny nephew with brittle Type 1 diabetes. He almost dies about every six months, even with his goddamm pump and the best mother/caretaker/doctor triefecta I’ve ever witnessed.
Personal health can be tricky. I have no food, or even life advice other than to listen to your body, and beware of simple answers to complicated questions. Bodies, food, life, politics, relationships, etc, they ARE complicated, I’m sorry but they are. Thoughtful, complex answers aren’t good clickbait though, so people will tell you otherwise. I mean, geez, I’d freakin love a bulleted summary, like, This Short, Pithy List Works For Everyone, Every Life, Every Body. I would love ten easy ways of How To Do It, How To Figure Out This Goddamm Life, Once And For All, Please Someone Tell Me.
Like, the addiction thing. I very occasionally like cannabis, especially the Girl Scout Cookies one, but some strains make me too introspective and I spiral into Scandinavian Thoughts, which I fight against anyway, so I can’t just do any old thing. And I loathe the smell of pot, and the smoke really is very harsh for your lungs [also don’t @me about filters, it absolutely IS hard on lungs to just smoke it, there are better ways of getting it in your system]. I don’t like the taste or smell of alcohol [except this one Italian alcoholic fizz that tastes like expensive lemon or grapefruit soda, and it has a ton of sugar, natch], and even though I like the mellow feeling after one drink, I’m sound asleep after two. I can take alcohol or leave it, so i mostly leave it. But candy, or chocolate cake, or cookies, all the really good shit, my good, dear, beloved friend Sugar, the best invention in the world, THAT’S THE THING I’M KIND OF GENUINELY ADDICTED TO, THAT’S THE THING THAT REALLY AFFECTS MY SPECIFIC AND OVERALL HEALTH. The thing I can never get enough of, can’t seem to manage in small doses, am always thinking about, goddamm it. But I can eat these pretzels, and stop when I’m full, and it’s all good. I was always hungry before, could never feel full in my body or brain. I didn’t just want dessert or candy all the time, I could never have enough of it. Like if you put a beautifully cooked meal in front of me and told me I could have it for free, or I could pay a dollar for an old, dried out, shitty candy bar, I’d pay, no question. Like for real, I have a sugar thing. It’s humbling and maddening to realize, and like I said, it’s improved my health since I’ve started dealing with it).
I really just wanted to recommend this gas station for their excellent stock, and to say, these prezels are unusual and worth a try and I’ll fuck off now.
