The thick pile soft and plush against Louis’ bare feet. Lestat was splitting his time between frowning down at it and frowning over at Louis.

Last Monday of the Week 2025-01-20

Getting the juices flowing, wait, no, not that way

Listening: Atarashii Gakko! is a thrash rock girl group who do these incredibly convoluted and elaborate music videos, I think I saw Pineapple Kryptonite ages ago and forgot to look into them. Their new thing is Tokyo Calling which is a great high-energy song. Terrifically catchy.

Reading: Finished The Spear Cuts Through Water. I love some gay boys who only know how to express their love through punching.

Towards the end the focus of the story starts to slip in a way that works really well with the framing device of the Inverted Theater in which the whole story takes place, as the story slowly moves from being about the protagonists to being about the world they leave behind.

At times I found that the book slowed way, way down, and at other times it moves you through pages at a breakneck speed. The slow sections aren't bad but they could be a little frustrating.

This is very good at selling you the image of the Whole World Around You, between the constant snippets of external thought interjecting onto your story, and the casual way the story moves up and down layers of narrative, you get a very expansive and layered look at the world. Closing out the book by going into the acknowledgements with no warning was incredibly jarring and is such a cool trick to pull off this well.

Watching: Watched John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum while crashed on the couch trying to convince my slightly sick partner to eat more.

That's John Wick alright. Increasingly he doesn't have to say anything because we all know the deal. It's hard to get this kind of contextless context on mainstream media so it's cool that they can do it here.

As always: my conception of the people of this world is that they're the Faeries, they are the Seelie and Unseelie court, their world is layered on top of ours but basically never interacts except in extremis. There's a tiny bit of bleed through from normal organized crime but that's about it, otherwise they're simply too bizzare, their motivations too foreign. They clearly don't care about like. Real Money that much, they have their own currency that buys you seemingly Anything You Want, from the right guy.

Also watched American Psycho again after a long time. I forgot how much fun this movie is, he's so awful. The man has zero rizz!

Playing: I got my hands on a Lenovo Legion Go at a steep discount, so kicking the tyres on that. Mostly so far I watched my partner play through a few levels of Portal for the first time, which is fun! Truly one of the great games to watch someone play for the first time, even if they constantly badger you for hints.

It's a fascinating little device, shockingly powerful all things considered, I was extremely surprised despite knowing that it's basically a 1650 strapped to a lightweight performance AMD laptop chip. You can just run (low and change) Forza Horizon 5 on this!

I'm not used to controllers in 3D so I will probably stick to platformers and 2D RPG's and visual novels on this for the most part but it'll if nothing else serve as a platform I can plug a mouse and keyboard into and use as a spare PC if I want to do local multiplayer stuff at home. I want to work on a rig to make it an HTPC/gaming console type deal too.

Currently running Windows so I can get a feel for the expectations but it will get Bazzite'd at some point.

Making: Sketches and modelling to figure out some furniture. I found out that my hardware place does online cut-to-order plywood which is a huge boon for my project brain. I can cut wood at the makerspace in town and I still might, but you have to check what they have on hanger or order in some plywood which can get expensive fast once you add in saw time.

Trying to design a folding coffee table that turns into a side table when I'm not using it. I hate coffee tables but there are times when you need one. Current plan is oscillating between all wood or finally breaking down and buying a bunch of carbon fibre tubes to make something stupidly complicated.

This is pushing against not so much my skill level as much as my faff limit. Like. There was the option of doing this in brazed aluminium. But ideally I can do as much of this as possible at the free library makerspace and I don't want to deal with safely doing brazing at a library makerspace.

I also because I have brain worms want this to take down relatively small, because at all times I am thinking about Just Walking Out. Carbon tubes mean I can make it mostly slot and bolt together. Brass was an option but it's so expensive, and while aluminium tubes are an obvious choice I think they are simply piss ugly. I would genuinely do painted PVC first tbh.

Tools and Equipment: Caddy is a really neat project

I've used nginx for HTTP/S and CGI for many years but much of the Weague infrastructure runs on Caddy for simplicity. It's an HTTPS server with a very easy to use configuration structure, fully automatic HTTPS, that works even on local networks, and with a really solid plugin system for CGI. It is less performant than nginx but most of the time nginx is simply not your bottleneck. If you want your project to Just Work, whether that's static site hosting or a more complex application, Caddy is easy to deploy and low maintenance. No more hoping you get cron emails when your cert update fails!

Next time I run into an issue with my personal site infra that requires fixing by editing nginx.conf I'm probably just going to migrate to Caddy.

The air smells of dust and must, feeling like you’ve stepped into the past as you hear the chime of the old brass bell above the door. Indigo’s eyes light up as you’ve uncovered what may as well be a treasure trove for him. His fingers start twitching, and you cover his hands with yours.

“Remember, we’re buying things for the house.”

“I know, just excited.”

“Why don’t we start with furniture?”

“Yeah… probably a good idea. Hard to hide a couch in your pocket.”

The antique store is filled to the brim with things stacked upon others, any flat space crammed with various small objects and decorations. Kind of feels like those old iSpy books you’d flip through in the library. Simply trying to find second hand things for the house may be a little more difficult than you thought. Indigo comes up to two side tables, inspecting both of them for any signs of damage. Considering the state of the shop, they’re actually in quite good shape, and you take a picture of them on your phone.

Continuing walking around, next comes a pair of matching lamps for the side tables, a television console, a record player, and you even find yourself thumbing through old VHS tapes and records. Indigo has struck up a chat with the old lady at the register, laughing occasionally at whatever is being said. He took your phone to show her what items you were hoping to purchase. You gather up your finds into a basket you liked and bring them up to the register. He seems impressed with your haul, setting a hand on your shoulder as you step up beside him.

“You seem rather happy with your finds.”

“I had to show restraint and not take everything.”

“Why not? We recently got paid plenty for you to get what you want!”

“The basket got too heavy.”

He laughs, not expecting that to be your reason.

“You know what, I can understand the restraint now. I’m eyeing those pots over there… although I wonder if it’s worth bringing those home with how rowdy Thief can get.”

“We could build a greenhouse, and just keep them in the garage until we can. It’s too cold to start planting anyways, so it gives us plenty of time to get a garden built.”

“Would we even be able to maintain a garden with how often we go on business trips?”

The older lady isn’t behind the counter anymore, but a glance up at the camera facing the two of you means you probably can’t reveal any true details anyways.

“We could go on one of those apps where you hire someone to take care of your pets or plants while you’re gone. It’d be even better if we do that and get someone consistent to watch Thief. He might like having a sitter instead of the neighbors popping over to let him out.”

“You know, I didn’t even think of that. I’ll look into it.”

“Not today, you’re not! We gotta get this stuff home and clean it up! We can get some takeout and sit on our floor for one last night before our couch gets there.”

You take your phone, showing the several online listings for second hand furniture you found and purchased. He scrolls through, eyes widening at some higher price items that usually are impossible to get your hands on.

The two of you laugh as the older lady brings the tags for the furniture you chose back to the counter. A couple of guys, assumedly her grandsons, come out from the back and begin moving them out to your car. It takes a bit of finessing, but luckily you get everything in. You pay for the things in cash, waving to the lads as you drive away.

“Please tell me I didn’t just hand a family business counterfeits.”

“Nope, used them all up at Walmart.”

“Oh good.”

Perhaps too broad a question but I’ve moved into a new place and I don’t know where to begin with decorating. The actual features of the space are uninspiring, there’s some dark brown leather sofas I’m unsure of how to style etc, where do I start!

Hm. Okay so if you have no obvious architectural features to work with, then I would start with making some. I'm assuming this is a rental, so that means you'll have to use furniture. This got long so under the cut...

My absolute favorite thing to do with a meh space is make a wall of bookcases - Ikea Billy's in a variety of widths + an interesting combination of shelves (mix up the heights and mix glass and wood) can look amazing. Don't forget the lighting - buy the super thin wire down lights (from ikea or Amazon or elsewhere) and stick them in the top of each bookcase (you can slip the wire between the back and the frame), add lamps and spotlights actually in the bookcase (you'll have to cut holes in the back of the bookcases to get the plug through but an exacto knife will sort you out, just do your cutting before you attach the back). Put all the lights into one multi plug and put that into a smart plug and voila, you've got an amazing feature that you can pack up and take with you. Below is my old bookshelf wall, ignore the mess on the table.

Other ideas: get some statement furniture, like a coffee table or vintage sideboard or something and make that the feature. Set up the room so that piece is where your attention is drawn. You can also do a gallery wall - there's a million tutorials online but that's a really easy way to fill space and upgrade a bland area. If you have good windows, make them more of a statement with curtains - you can get reasonably priced ones from ikea and Etsy. Make sure to put the rod close to the ceiling and ideally get curtains long enough to touch the floor, it's an instant way to make your ceilings look higher. Do NOT cover the windows with the curtains, they should hang to the side to make the window appear larger.

But my overall, biggest piece of advice: to avoid the sad, made.com showroom effect, you've got to mix vintage and modern. Get out to auction houses, antique stores, car boot sales, Etsy, eBay, Facebook marketplace, etc and get hunting. This is by far the easiest and most versatile way to solve your problem - when your furniture has personality, it can do a lot of heavy lifting for bland features. Find a piece you love and let that inspire the space for you. For me, it was my French 1930s coffee table with the swan legs (an Etsy find). That set the tone for the whole room (1930s! Feminine! Frivolous!).

Moving advice- Craigslist hilariously and also Facebook marketplace! Start looking at things now you need to get like a couch etc. and start liking those things to train your algorithm on Facebook. Especially anything that looks likes something you would ultimately want to buy or has the search phrase etc. rich people get rid of great quality shit for free even all the time take advantage! For training your algorithm you can also just open up the distance parameters to the whole country just so it starts picking up good stuff. That way when you’re ready to buy you find something good. And don’t rush into buying stuff because you feel you need to have a couch or chair or side tables to feel independent or adult etc. wait and buy pieces you really like ans would want to keep. They’ll come to you. Also hit up good will or other thrifts or estate sales, yard sales, and even local online auctions for especially kitchen stuff, dishes and cups etc. so many people need to clean out their parents homes when they pass and get rid of normal every day stuff we use but would be so expensive to buy new. Online auctions that are local can be an amazing resource for that too. You can use liveauctioneers and search locally. You can get really great quality furniture that isn’t worth it to people to pay to ship but you’re local you can just go pick up. I got two custom designer benches once for $10 total at a place I only had to drive twenty minutes to to pick up. Or if in all your searching you find something you love that’s not local try uship to see how much it would cost to ship. It ends up being more affordable than you think . And meal prep. Batch cook things. I love to roast a pan of vetables weekly and make a protein that I can add things to during the week. So like simply seasoning chicken with just salt pepper garlic and onion powder and then like oregano or Italian seasoning well I can use that in pretty much any recipe. Can add paprika cumin etc make it into Mexican whatever. Or can just add it to a salad. Pick a day you have off and just get into a routine of spending an hour or two in the kitchen where you prep things for the week even if it’s whole meals you then put in fridge or even freeze. Make multiples of things you can freezer and have later. Especially they’re annoying to make lol. It feels like a lot of time at first but you make it fun. Put on a show or podcast and it saves you so much time during the week and also mental energy! Also ends up saving so much energy when you have already prepared food at home

"Where did you get that doctor's bag?" Peter asked as he sat on his dining room table, a cool gothic looking piece he barely ate at and mainly just used for putting his stuff on and sometimes... seeing how sturdy it was (which is very much is a sturdy piece of antique Victorian furniture).

"Never you mind." Martin smiled as he slipped on his gloves and opened the bag, pulling out an assortment of tools and instruments. "Now, make with the face. And remove your shirt as well, please, it makes it so much easier to study when there are less obstacles in the way."

Peter stuck out his tongue and removed his tank top, throwing it somewhere off to the side before he rubbed at his face, not really wanting to do this. Martin had been bugging him for weeks to study his vampire face, and Peter thought it was stupid and invasive on his personal space, but he finally caved when Martin agreed to something Peter had been asking him to do in the bedroom for weeks.

He removed his hands and Martin was staring. Peter could feel the differences in his face, his hands, all over his body where his vampire nature made itself more well known. He absolutely hated it, but it was part of him now, and he had no choice in the matter.

"Alright, probe me." Peter said, spreading his arms.

okay I have DONE IT. after many maddening months of listlessly clicking around online I have purchased patio furniture—a table + chairs set for one end of the deck and two slightly oversized rocking chairs for the other end. I decided not to drop $$ on a sofa this summer as I’m broke as hell right now and also not entirely sure how much I’ll use that outdoor space for lounging. all of that cost $710 🫠 but my budget for the deck was $1000 so (sigh) it’s ok. also I suspect I’ll end up returning the kinda pricey dining chairs and getting cheaper ones I can spray paint, which would save me maybe $120-150.

I still need to buy:

a little side table (hopefully a cheap one on marketplace I can spray paint a fun color)

outdoor plants and soil (gotta decide whether I’m doing flowers & herbs or veggies or a mix)

maybe an outdoor rug but I have to scrub down the whole deck with vinegar first to get all the sap up and then see if it comes back or if that was just residue from last year

some kind of spray sealant

possibly one or two of those waterproof wall tapestries to cover the ugly siding… OR I could do tapestry on one wall and a bunch of those hanging planters on the other… but that depends on whether I can drill into that siding (not sure if I can or should). but ooh that would look awfully nice and would be a lovely way to use vertical space for more plants out there. tbd?
