You listened to the loud patter of rain hitting the windows as the early spring storm raged outside your home one uneventful evening. You and Joe found yourselves wrapped up in each other's arms and absolutely bored out of your mind, you more than him. You’d been on the couch for about an hour now, Joe finding entertainment by online shopping while you were staring at the ceiling, waiting for him to notice. You were so bored that you turned to counting the number of times you heard rumbles of thunder, which wasn’t a lot compared to the amount of lightning flashes.

“Joe, I’m bored,” you gave up as you turned your head to him and watched him scroll mindlessly on his phone, seemingly looking at new shoes and clothes for your trip to Cannes in a few weeks.

“Watch TV or something,” he said, brushing off your clear boredom and going back to scrolling away on his phone.

You look up at him, a scowl on your face as you start to get a little irritated at the fact that he isn’t doing anything to help your boredom. Cuddling could only do so much, and it wasn’t really doing a lot right now. “Joe-,”.

“Ooo, these are sick,” he whispers to himself, interrupting you as he taps on yet another pair of shoes he wasn’t going to buy.

You let out a loud sigh as you moved out of his arms, his eyes darting towards you at the sudden loss of contact he felt when you moved out of his chest. You rolled your eyes and walked over to the kitchen, pulling out a bottle of wine to hopefully distract you for the time being. You sat down on the barstool, pouring yourself a glass of wine as you looked up and saw the storm intensify, silently wishing (even though it was wrong) for the power to go out or a tree to fall down because that would provide some entertainment.

Joe looked back at you for a few seconds, watching as you plopped down onto the barstool and looked drowsy since you had nothing productive to do. You both had plans to go out tonight and check out the newest floral additions to the Cincinnati Botanical Gardens, but the storm outside ruined that plan and your moods.

He tossed his phone to the side, feeling guilty for ignoring you when you clearly needed something to do to keep you busy. You had been so excited to go to the gardens for weeks, your mutual fondness for flowers & natural beauty was something you bonded over pretty early on in your relationship, and it broke his heart when you couldn’t go and he had to watch you brush it off like it was fine. He hopped off the couch and walked over to where you were sitting, snaking his arms around your waist and setting his chin on your shoulder.

“I’m sorry,” he said as he pressed a kiss to your neck. “I know you’re bored and I shouldn’t have brushed you off like that,”.

You stayed silent for a few moments and didn’t react to what he was saying. Not that you were mad, you just enjoyed teasing him a little.

“Y/N?” He asked, moving his head a little to look at your face, which was stone cold. You took another sip of your wine as you heard him speak up again. “I’m really sorry, I mean it. Don’t be mad,” he said again, this time pressing two kisses to your cheek. You could feel his body tense up at your silence, now feeling bad for making him feel like this.

You placed your glass down onto the countertop, letting yourself fall back into his embrace as you placed your hands on his arms that were around your waist, relishing his touch.

“It’s okay. I’m not mad, just teasing, I'm just a whiny baby because I can’t find anything to do,” you laughed.

Joe let go of you and moved to sit on the barstool next to you, “Well, let’s find something to do then,” he smiled as he grabbed your wine glass and took a little sip.

“Okay, shoot,” you said.

“How about writing? Working on music always keeps you busy and I wouldn’t mind sitting in on a little writing session and watching you work your magic,” he beams.

“Already hit the studio this morning while you were at the gym, remember? Besides, the album is almost done so not really much to do right now other than finishing touches and post-album production stuff,” you sigh.

“Oh right, right,” he remembers. “Okay, how about baking something? Maybe cookies? I can help too,” he suggests.

“Ran out of flour last week,” you frown. “I was going to ask if we could stop by the store on the way home from the gardens to pick some up so I could make Cinnamon Rolls tomorrow but well, that plan went down the drain,” you say as you run your fingers through your hair.

“Damn. Okay, what about a movie? I know we’ve been meaning to watch the new Hunger Games movie for a while but never got around to it,” he asks, hoping to see your frown turn upside down into the smile he loves to see on your face, but it doesn’t. “What would you ever do without me?” you tease as you press a kiss to his cheek. “But in all seriousness, don’t say that again. You know I love it here, no reason to overthink it,” you say, softening your serious words with another kiss but this time to his perfect nose.

He was instead sitting at the Piano that you had got for the house. You stayed quiet, pursing your lips as you placed the snacks back down and turned your body so that you were facing him, his back to you. You could see faint scratches along his back from your nails, taking note that you should probably put some moisturizer on his back when you go upstairs. He looked so good right now, the sight of him at your piano, shirtless, was sending you into orbit.

Before you could say something, you heard a melodious tune fill the air, a familiar one. You watched as Joe worked his fingers along the keys of the piano, playing a song that he had been working on for the past few weeks. When you first got the Piano for the living room, he had asked you if he could also use it, which came to your surprise since he didn’t know how to play.

Flashback to February

“But you don’t know how to play?” you asked as you ran your fingers across the keys of the piano.

“I have the best teacher in the entire world at my fingertips though,” he smiled as he moved his hand on top of yours as you played a few notes; his touch was so gentle and so warm.

“You really want to learn how to play piano?” you asked, looking up at him.

“I really want to learn how to play piano,” he nodded. “If you can throw a football back and forth with me, I can learn how to do what you do,”.

You stared up at him for a few seconds before saying, “Deal” and watching his face light up at your response. There was no way Joe was actually going to learn how to play the Piano right? He was an athlete, not a musician; unless he was Troy Bolton and had a secret hidden musical talent.

“I’ll give him 2 weeks before he quits,” you thought to yourself.

End of Flashback

He didn’t quit. He passed the two-week marker and still was keen on learning how to play, even sitting at the Piano without you and playing by himself using tutorials and testing out his own ideas. It was truly incredible how he picked it up so quickly, and he always was so eager to show off his skills to you.

He kept playing, the song he chose was ‘I Wanna Be Yours’ by Arctic Monkeys, one of his personal favorites.

“Secrets I have held in my heart, Are harder to hide than I thought. Maybe I just wanna be yours. I wanna be yours, I wanna be yours. Wanna be yours,” you whispered, singing the part of the song he was playing on the Piano.

You were about to sing the next lines, but then you heard the sounds coming from the Piano shift to another tune by a seamless transition. This one was even more familiar and made your eyes widen.

He was playing ‘Endgame’, your song. The song you wrote about the desire to be Joe’s Endgame. It touched on your reputations and how you both had a pretty big one and together would be the talk of the town, which you were. It talked about how you wanted to be the one for him and the things you both went through to bring you to one another. It mentioned how captivated you are by him, his eyes, his body; his handprints all over your soul that could never be smeared. You wanted Joe in your life forever.

This song was the final addition to the album, which had been heavily inspired by Joe, and he was playing it on the Piano for you, and not the other way around. He had never asked to learn how to play one of your songs, so this took you by surprise.

You watched as he pressed all the right keys, hit every note, and played the song effortlessly. Your stomach was now filled with butterflies as the smile on your face got bigger. You got off the couch and slowly walked over to him, singing the lyrics of the song to match what he was playing on the Piano.

“I don't wanna hurt you, I just wanna be, Drinking on a beach, With you all over me. I know what they all say, But I ain't trying to play,” you sing as you cup the nape of his neck with your hand, rubbing your fingers into his soft skin. A smile appears on Joe’s face as he hears you singing while he plays your song.

“I wanna be your end game. I wanna be your first string. I wanna be your A-Team. I wanna be your end game, end game,” you sing as you slide onto the bench next to him and rest your head against his shoulder, ghosting your fingers over his as they dance around the keys. Your heart was exploding right now, no guy had ever done this–played your song for you. He was serenading you in the best possible way.

“Big reputation, big reputation. Oh, you and me, we got big reputations. Ah, and you heard about me. Oh, I got some big enemies. Big reputation, big reputation. Oh, you and me would be a big conversation. Ah, and I heard about you. Oh, you like the bad ones too,” you sing as you hear the Piano fade out.

You stay silent for a few seconds as you try to process what just happened, tears filling your eyes at the plethora of emotions you are experiencing. The fact that he just played a song you wrote about him, to you, was something you couldn’t comprehend. You felt Joe’s hand move from the keys to yours, entwining your fingers and bringing them up to his lips to press a kiss.

“You’ve gotten really good at that,” you say, breaking the silence as you turn your head to look up at him.

“Learned from the best of the best,” he smiled.

“You killed it, Joe. Seriously, I have your Grammy waiting upstairs,” you laughed. “When did you even have time to learn ‘Endgame’? I finished that song not that long ago,” you added.

“Well, I found a copy of your sheet music on the table and started practicing it when you weren’t at home,” he chuckled. You looked into his eyes again, your eyes a little glossy and his filled with adoration.

“What?” he asked, noticing your teary expression.

“Thank you,” you said as you wiped your eyes.

“For what, Y/N?” he asked as he moved his hand to cup your face and wipe the tears that fell from your eyes.

“Nobody has ever done that for me and you- you just,” you say, not being able to find words that would express your feelings.

“No reason to thank me,” he says. “I’m just appreciating the talents of the most gifted and extraordinary Woman I have ever met in my entire life,” he says, making your heart explode again. “You deserve to be shown how amazing you are, musically & as a person,”.

“Besides, I know you love the little things,” he winks.

“You are truly the best Man I have ever met in all the years I have been alive,” you smile before pressing a big kiss to his lips.

“I love you,” he says against your lips before going back for another one.

“And I love you,” you say back, pressing more kisses around his face. “I should get you in the studio with me next time. I think a Piano feature is in your future,” you wink.

“Oookay, I know I’m good but let’s not go that far yet,” he says as he runs his fingers through his hair.

“Whatever you say, Troy Bolton,” you joke. He rolls his eyes at you as you cite ‘High School Musical’, which you happened to force him to watch with you a few weeks ago.

“Don’t be mad,” you shrug. “Not my fault you’re athletically and musically talented,”.

“I’m never going to hear the end of it, am I?” he laughs.

“Never,” you say as you press another kiss to his lips, his hand moving to the back of your head to deepen the kiss. Then, you feel his hands wrap around your waist, picking you up off the bench and carrying you up the stairs.

“What are you doing?” you giggle as you pull away from the kiss.

“Round 2, obviously,” he scoffs.

“Ohhh,” you nod. “I did get pretty worked up seeing you playing the Piano with a bedhead and just in sweats,”.

“I knew you would,” he smiled as he opened your bedroom door.

“Do I get to be serenaded again after we’re done?” you ask him, tilting your head and praying he would play again for you.

“If you’re lucky,” he winks as he places you down on the bed.

You reach out and pull him down to the bed next to you, then throwing your leg over his hips so that you are straddling him.

More Obey me! Headcannons

had so much fun last time I wanted to do it again

Satan is so smart, but has issues doing basic math and refuses to admit it, like he can’t figure out fifteen plus seven without his fingers or a calculator (is this me projecting? maybe)

Belphie bought himself and Mc matching house slippers. Mc thought Beel felt left out and made Belphie buy a pair for him too

Beel has a huge green thumb, and takes upon himself to save plants he thinks are sad or lonely. He buys the dying plants from the store to bring back to life (partially inspired by the chat where someone, forgot who, told beel that if he talked to plants they would grow faster my precious baby)

Lucifer is the best cook at the HoL, but rarely has time to cook. Beel is the second best but usually eats the ingredients before he can make anything with them. Mammon is probably the worst because Levi can make food from animes almost perfectly

Asmo once almost set a store he was collaborating with on fire with his rage alone because they spelt his name wrong

Beel probably needs a new toothbrush every couple weeks. Belphie probably gets toothbrushes mixed up and uses ones that aren’t his

Lucifer and Solomon like prune juice haha old men

The one thing Luke and Simeon have seriously disagreed on is if raisins belong in dessert. Michael likes them, so Luke does too. Simeon thinks they’re awful but never directly says it, so Lucifer usually says it for him

Despite always being online, Levi had not once checked his RAD email. He has 9,999+ emails, probably a lot more because 9,999 is where it stops counting

Mammon collects cool rocks and keeps them in a box under his bed

Satan’s hands are always freezing, so he sticks them under Mc (or a cat) when possible, or uses a charmed hot water bottle from Solomon that stays warm for days at a time

Solomon and Asmo have had matching bracelet sets for as long as they’ve known each other, and since they didn’t make them anymore, they got some custom done for Mc so they could also have them

For about 1,000 years, Thirteen though jelly beans were an actual kind of bean and Solomon never let her let it go

The first food Mc and Mammon ate on a date in the human world together was Taiyaki, so he made it a point to learn how to make them to surprise Mc (even though he’s a terrible cook) (I might make this a fic since I like this idea so much)

Diavolo has always wanted a Devildom version of a hamster but Barbatos refused to have any kind of rodent in the castle, rat or not

Luke probably downloads those stupid app games with the ads unironically

Satan’s favorite Disney Princess is Ariel because she ran off to do what she wanted without caring what her father thought, it’s giving daddy issues. He’s probably considered running off and marrying Mephisto to make Lucifer angry

Raphael unironically enjoys off brand chips and soda

Lucifer is a nail biter, and Asmo is helping him curve the habit by putting a nasty tasting top coat when he does his nails, and it’s also why he wears gloves all the time.

Belphie and Satan once went up to the humans world together to mess with people in Salem, Massachusetts with magic, which spawned several conspiracy theory books. They read them together and laugh as a past time

Diavolo once went to the human world in his demon form for,, reasons, and accidentally got written into ancient mythology because he got spotted by humans

Barbatos had a home garden for cooking and sometimes lets Asmo have leaves from some of the plants to make homemade skin care products

Mammon probably has lots of earwax. Don’t share your earbuds with him unless you make him clean them afterwards

Belphie has a really large water bottle that’s always on his side table. He wakes up randomly though the night, chugs an ungodly amount of water and then passed out again. In the mornings he has to piss really bad but is too lazy to get up and actually do it, so he just sits and complains. Even Beel isn’t sure how he’s able to drink that much water in a short amount of time

Satan likes waking up early to enjoy the morning air and read outside for a while since mornings can get hectic with his brothers

Thirteen’s favorite torture device is the Iron Maiden. She had her own that she bedazzled. Even Asmo is jealous and wants her to make him one too

Mammon introduced Diavolo to Gatorade, and instead of sneaking behind Lucifer and Barbatos’s backs to drink Demonus, they have secret Gatorade meetings

Diavolo and Lucifer definitely both had a hidden Dialuci stash of things and probably clash trying to collect limited edition things online

None of the Obey me cast took birthdays or passing of years seriously until Mc entered the picture and suddenly time was precious, and they actually kept track. Because of this, nobody is really sure how old the twins are

Mephisto thinks roosters want world domination

Asmo thinks cilantro tastes like soap and Levi thinks anything cola flavored tastes like cough medicine

Mammon's favorite party trick is one Mc taught him, which is rolling his tongue Everyone he meets, including his brothers, thinks it's so cool when really it's just a genetic thing

Is Burpee not a good brand for seeds?

I mean. Okay. I'm not trying to start some dumbass seedhouse drama here. Burpee seeds are absolutely ubiquitous in stores here. They're a very old, huge seedhouse that started in Pennsylvania, and over the years they've innovated the business in interesting ways and are even responsible for some famous vegetable and flower varieties.

They're also kinda the Walmart of seedhouses. Literally, in that they're what you're gonna find in Walmart, and also because they just take a very big business approach to things. Some people have been using Burpee seeds for generations and swear by them. They also have a a lot of bad reviews. A lot of their seeds are (reputedly) grown in China, which isn't a problem per se but does have the usual problems of being a good way to avoid safety and quality controls. Because it's a big business, it probably cuts corners in favor of profit. Don't imagine that when you buy from Burpee, you're buying directly from some dedicated farmer--Burpee has a network of growers they buy their seed from, and then they package and market it.

Their seeds are mostly marketed to home gardeners, and thus are targeted to a non-critical audience. That is, a lot of the people who plant the seeds will blame failures on user error, when it might well just be shitty seed. If your carrots don't come up, are you gonna write Burpee about that $3 packet of seeds? Nah, you're gonna be like "well shit guess I suck at gardening". If you buy from, say, Johnny's Selected Seed, which markets its products to mid-sized market growers, you know that THEY know that if the seed sucks and doesn't grow, people are going to come at them for lost money.

I don't think there's anything wrong with being in the store and being like "dude I wanna grow that one!" and picking up a pack of Burpee seeds. But if you're online ordering, there are a lot of great seedhouses that are really dedicated to the future of agriculture, and I'd rather buy from them.

Let me preface this by saying I adore Annie Autumn. Its one of those great one-sided/parasocial kind of relationships of my online life. I’ve been following her for awhile now after seeing her tagged in another friend of a friend’s posts. I bought a baby blanket from her for a friend of mine when she was doing a fundraiser, and I have one of her hook rugs on my wall as well. It’s devastating watching her go through cancer treatment and now settling into end of life care - but I also really value what she is willing to share with everyone. Radical queer community grieving at its finest. That is all to say – this is a funny kind of review. Not that I ever strive for objectivity or anything like that. But this little zine really hit a spot in me and its really interesting to give a bit of a longer reflection.

I bought this on a total whim – Annie made merch for her living wake and asked Instagram if people would buy it. Which hell yeah of course we wanted it! Let everyone wear this beautiful stuff while giving you some money for your family. And she included this zine with the totes and shirts. I knew she had built her home with her family and community and jumped at the prospect of hearing more of the story. It’s a short zine – maybe less than 10 pages, colour printed on cardboard. It’s structured around two weather events that woke Annie up in the middle of the night and threatened her home. In-between these stories of fire and flood is a bit about the actual building of the house. The thing that initially struck me is that this is a climate crisis story, displaying the real cost of our collective failure to address climate change meaningfully and sharing the material effects of this crisis. This is a story that is both political and personal in all the best ways.

Annie talks about how building her own house was a dream of her’s from when she was a teenager. I feel like it is such a strong trope in the queer community that we all dream of running away from society to start a commune where we can live freely and build things together. I have personally harboured this dream, but during the covid-19 pandemic lockdowns I was confronted with just how interconnected we all are and thought that this kind of running away fantasy was really cruel. I don’t want to turn away from the world, I want to find a way to live in it while also being in community. This also led to me to looking at houses instead of property when it came to buying a house. I did kind of abandon the city in the end and run away a bit, but just up the hill to the mountains where we could afford to buy a house just outside of the insane Sydney property bubble.

There is something that I struggle with that comes in later in the zine that I want to dig into a bit, towards the end. Annie reflects on how the house is far from perfect but that:

“I love that she’s still a bit of a work in progress, that I’ve shown my kids that you can build a life using your hands, and that life can resist dominant paradigms that dictate that you ‘cant’t’ or ‘shouldn’t’ make things for yourself. That tells you not to try in case the things you make are ‘bad’. That its better to work in a soulless job so that you can pay others to use their hands to make things for you – your clothes, your home, your garden”.

This kind of sentiment is something that greatly irritates me while also being something that I agree with to a certain extent. I live in a house that someone else built – and we paid someone to renovate the kitchen in the first year we lived here, and I don’t regret either of these decisions. I also really want to learn how to paint the walls myself and take on other repairs eventually as well because learning skills rules. The garden is going to be a lifelong project for me. At the moment it’s a fussy cottage garden that the retirees that lived here before us obviously poured so much love and care into, but is full of plants I want to slowly replace with natives and productive fruits and vegetables. I don’t think it’s fair to blanket say that all work is soulless, and that paying professionals to do things for you is wrong. But I do think we could all stand to learn the true cost of things like food and clothes on the planet, people, and animals. So call me a fake radical but I am happy to give some jobs over to the tradies in my house.

I kind of can’t believe how long this went – hoping to review more zines this year but don’t expect >500 words very often.
