3 September 2024 | Tuesday
Start: 4:30AM | Weighing: 53.25kg
Breakfast (6:00AM)
Usual banana (130g) pancakes, with an egg, a teaspoon of cinnamon, protein powder (15g) and a side of yogurt (81g)
Cal: 358 | Protein: 24.6g
Tumblr media
Thoughts: Another good morning, although, as the previous night didn't go according to usual schedule, I had woken up slightly tired. I was able to make a nice trip to the gym, for a little run and core work out. Whilst also adding in a full body stretch.
Snack (7:20AM)
Small soy latte - extra hot.
Cal: 73 | Protein: 5.2g
Tumblr media
Thoughts: Being able to leave the house earlier for work meant I had ample time to buy myself a coffee. Extra hot of course. I was able to read a little bit while waiting for my bus.
Break (10:15AM)
Strawberries (109g) and blueberries (88g)
A cup of caramel latte (nestle packet)
Cal: 121 | Protein: 2.1g
Tumblr media
Thoughts: I'm feeling quite hungry at this point, but the fruits were succesful in holding down the hunger for some time whilst I wait for lunch to come around.
Lunch (12:15PM)
A chocolate nut fudge protein bar plus two rice crackers.
Cal: 257 | Protein: 19.8g
Tumblr media
Thoughts: At this point, I am quite hungry, yes the bar and the rice crackers were nice but this is genuinely not enough lunch to keep me satisfied. For tomorrow, I will try to have something a bit bigger for lunch as I am on my feet and burn more calories than at night. Not having enough food means that it does affect me physically as I am more exhausted, and mentally slower at functions with slight lightheadedness.
Dinner (6:15PM)
A salad bowl consisting of a salad mix (30g), a tomato (152g), cucumber (60g), mushrooms (33g) tuna chunks in springwater (43g).
To add to the taste, some lemon juice (16ml) and fish sauce (4ml)
On the side, some kimchi (102g) and 2 rice cakes
Cal: 168 | Protein: 16.4g
Tumblr media
Thoughts: I could not wait long enough for this dinner, having been quite starved for a small lunch. I will definitely ensure that I have more food for lunch and less for dinner tomorrow.
Snack (7:30PM)
Protein mango shake consisting of frozen mangoes (110g), vanilla protein powder (15g) and lite soy milk (42ml)
Cal: 130 | Protein: 14.6
Tumblr media
Total calories: 1159 (Goal 1200)
Total protein: 83g
Thoughts: I definitely will make sure to have more lunch tomorrow. I realise that I spent quite a bit of time for dinner and not knowing what to eat, and after the salad, satisfyingly filling, I still had plenty of calories left to fill up. Which is the reason for the mango smoothie. Whilst the smoothie was scrumptious, it was an unnecessary add to my diet as I was already quite full. As mentioned multiple times within the short 'thoughts' sections, I will prioritise a larger lunch, this way my hunger is satisfied throughout my busy working day and avoid needing to fill in calories at night.
Sleep: 8:30PM

Price list
Here's a list of prices from receipts. Just for comparison;
1 month telephone service with unlimited calling North America and free texting 200 pesos
rent Room #3, 1400 pesos 1 month. Pretty cool room, large(14 feet by 20 feet bedroom) big outdoor kitchen with stove(oven/four burner), fridge, cement sink, all dishes (sets of 4), basic pots and pans, shelving and cupboard space, compost and garbage emptied daily, all swept, mopped, and bed made daily too( I make my own bed!) and a work table in the room for electronics(110 volt power at 4 points) and a chair. I provide a reading light, the bulbs here are weak. The kitchen extends to a dining table , 4 chairs, and a powerful overhead fan, The room had 2 rotating blaster fans, effective but noisy, and I provide a small floor fan to cast breezes across the bed. In Back of the room is a laundry drying area, very effective solar drier. The bathroom is a seperate building with toilet and hot shower inside and an outdoor sink. The entrance to all this is a gate opening into a passage under the ficus tree, with a hammock in the corner, shady and cool. A low fence gives privacy from the main courtyard which is the access to the pool and 6 other rooms. Being set back from the street wall , this room is pretty quiet, except for motorcycles, garbage trucks, and yackers in the night. Mexico. That's what we all say here when something seems so different from our Canadian standards, or is just plain inexplicable.
Food.I don't eat out, both as a budgetary nessecity, and a health measure(exposure to covid, germs and mosquitoes with dengue fever.) Cooking is pretty simple, and food, while increasingly expensive remains affordable. I suppose I paid as much for the fish from the fishing trip as buying it,but I know it's fresh, and I had fun. Boat trip 3500 +300 tip divided 4 ways for 1000 each.
Prices from receipts: prices per kilo, peso at 14 to the Canadian dollar. i.e. 100 pesos equals $7.
carrots-15 mushrooms-105 tomatoes-26 mandarin oranges-20 cucumber-18 yogurt 1 litre-40 white buns 1.80 each big chocolate cake ( for research only?) 65 725 ml mayonaise-71 big granola(1 kilo) 73 1.89 litre package juices (make mine mango!) 35 bananas 22 ketchup 37 avocadoes 20 (small, better quality at the market for double the price) 3 pack of romaine lettuce-50. big sweet low acid pine apple 60 bouqet of flowers 40 grapefruit 50 . I don't have consistent prices for melons or papayas, seems to vary with the vendors . Melons are so far wooden, but when ripened the papayas are melt in your mouth sweet with a wonderful flavour. likewise onions are pricey, garlic is cheap and eggs(fresh from the farm) are 10 pesos each.
Al these prices are sharply up from last year at least 10 % which is inflation here. Taxis, who have not seen a gas price increase got on the bandwagon and doubled their rate to 70,, combis, the route taxi pickup trucks went from 9 to 10 pesos and are always full to bulging, that being how the locals get around. no dogs, chickens or freight, although I,ve ridden withsurfboards, baskets of puppys, and the knifegrinders converted bicycle( the pedal spins a grindstone replacing the back wheel). That guy walks the streets calling out a wierd noise to let housewives know he's there. At one time all goods were sold door to door by vendors, all with distinctive sounds. Think the broom guy/ the fruit vendor/ the truckload of oranges/ the water truck/ my favorite is the propane truck which plays a tape of a cow mooing(gas de Oaxaca tune in the background).
Doctor visit is 400 pesos, but well worth it, Excellent doc, good exam, listens. Medecine is cheap. My antibiotics for the infected tooth cost 72 pesos. More drugs are available online for very low costs. The dentist( well trained) cost 500 for a checkup with an xray.
So, that's the current situation. There are much more expensive accomodations, bars are not cheap, and restaurants vary from dirt cheap tacos to fine dining at US prices. Puerto is booming, anticipating the highway to Oaxaca and Mexico city traffic. Construction everywhere(noisy). Traffic has doubled on the highway(4 Lanes) and crossing is perilous(run!). Small cafes open in low traffic areas and quickly go bust. Lots of good ideas, no market research. Stores advertise for help, but rising inflation deters people from taking low wage jobs. In general I'd say that things are getting harder for the average citizen. Corruption is rampant, crime is well organized, and everybody just says.. Mexico!

Based on the crazy amount of mouths and stomachs in your house, what does a regular grocery shopping trip look like?
It looks “normal” to me, but is probably an insane amount to other people. In a normal week, we go through a bag of apples (about 3 pounds), a bag of oranges (about 5 pounds), a bunch of bananas, assorted other fruits (two cartons of strawberries or 3 pounds of pears or 2 pounds of grapes, etc).  We go through usually two to three frozen bags of veggies, a head or two of broccoli, a bag of baby carrots, five or six tomatoes.  A dinner is usually 1.5-3 pounds of meat now, so that times 6-- it usually means about 3 pounds of ground beef, a six pound tray or bag of chicken, some sausage or meatballs. We usually try to have one vegetarian meal per week, so a pound of dry beans.
A 3 pound bag of chicken nuggets for lunches, or a box of pizza rolls, three boxes of macaroni, two packs of hot dogs. We do a lot of pasta and rice, but for pasta meals, we’re up to two pounds of pasta and two jars of red sauce per meal. A cream sauce usually requires an entire half pint of heavy cream, two cartons of mushrooms. We buy rice in bulk, and go through maybe 25 pounds a month.
Two to three loaves of bread, two pounds of lunchmeat, two packages of sliced cheese, two to three blocks of cheddar. Four to five dozen eggs, two gallons of milk. Two jars of applesauce, four cans of mandarin oranges, a couple bags of chips and boxes of crackers (thank God for Aldi, honestly). Three boxes of cereal, 32 cups of yogurt, two bags of chocolate chips, two bags of frozen pancakes. Two boxes of granola bars, a family size pack of fruit snacks. We usually only get cannisters of oatmeal and grits every other week.  I make naan, muffins, rolls, pretzels, and biscuits from scratch, so we don’t buy packaged versions of those. I don’t know a good weekly estimate for flour, because I usually buy three bags at once and then only get more when I’m running low, and that changes depending on the season (I bake less in the summer).
I meal plan for an entire week at a time-- breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner. We build the grocery list around that. We’ve found that Aldi is actually cheaper than a lot of the big bulk food stores around here, because multiple boxes or bags of an Aldi product are less overall than the equivalent of a brand name bulk package (where the markdown is usually from the same brand in smaller packages).  These are the staples we usually have, and the variation would be in sauces and seasonings! We have a pretty well-stocked cabinet of spices, so usually we’re only buying one or two at a time to replace something we’ve run out of. We don’t do a lot of individual serving items (except for yogurt because it saves my sanity).

notable moments from The French Connection Job
leverage 5.04
Eliot: I know what you're gonna say, Nate, but I want to tell you something about Toby. He taught me how to use a knife.
Nate: Use a knife?
Eliot: No. Not like I use a knife. He taught me how to cook. I was out of the service, and I was working for my second PMC. And the jobs we were taking were way across the line - past extractions and security actions.
Nate: Wetwork.
Eliot: Yeah. Anyway, I met Toby. We were reconning this restaurant in Belgium. And I should have closed him out. I should have been in and out in under 90 seconds. But I ended up talking to him for three hours. He showed me that I could use my knife to create instead of destroy. I stuck around for a couple of months. He taught me everything there was about the art of food, and I... He's one of the guys that kept me from falling all the way down. So now, I'm asking the other guy to understand why I'm gonna help him
HES BABY PROTECT HIM PLEASE
- - - - -
Eliot (stops him): Whoa. (gestures toward delivery man)
Hardison: What?
Eliot: You got to tip the guy.
Hardison: For doing his job?
Eliot: Hardison, he rode all the way over here on a bike to deliver your...
Hardison: That ain't nothing special. He got some exercise.
Eliot:...Dungeons & Dragons crap you ordered.
Hardison: He didn't bring me no cupcakes, no flowers, cards - nothing. You want a tip, little Stanley Tucci-looking... (give man change) Boom, boom, boom. Two quarters, two pennies. Go buy your mama something
eliot makes sure hardison gives tips because he’s a genuinely good guy
- - - - -
Sophie: I know it's short notice, but our celebrity chef just dropped out, and the network think you're a perfect replacement for the U.S. launch. The show is called "From Pole to Plate: Cooking with Strippers." Hmm? - But we haven't sorted the accommodation yet, so you'd have to live with the strippers to start off with.
Chef: Hell, yeah.
LMFAO HE WAS G O N E
- - - - -
Eliot: Food is life. Learn it. You will take this class seriously. Because if you don't, I'll throw your ass out of here quicker than you -
Hardison: I get to fire a laser. Yeah. Geeking in the kitchen. Uh, make you want to dance.
Eliot: We're here to cook food, not play with lasers
eliot is 0.000000005 seconds away from flipping his shit
- - - - -
Nate: How, um - how do you like being in Portland?
Parker: It's fine. Hardison and I are fine, and everything with the new Leverage is fine.
Nate: Parker, what's going on?
Parker: I just - I don't have a thing.
Nate: What do you mean, "a thing"?
Parker: Eliot has a thing. He loves food. Sophie loves theater. You have a sicko love of controlling people.
Nate: I don't have a sicko love - Let's stay on you. Art. What do you - what do you see when you look at Michelangelo's David?
Parker: Mark two laser grid around it, infrared on the floor, need a harness rated for six tons attached to a chopper to lift it out through a skylight
she’s BABY alright she just wants to feel
- - - - -
Eliot: Nate, I already swept the kitchen twice. There's no drugs. (to Hardison) Did you find anything?
Hardison: I think I did, man. Check it out. (fires gun) What? Wha- what? What?! Hey. Think about it. Levitating food could replace waiters.
Eliot: I will stab you in the neck.
Hardison: Don't hate the barbecue. Hate the sides.
sometimes eliot doesn’t know how he puts up with hardison and it shows
- - - - -
(Eliot is working in the kitchen, talking to Parker who is sitting at the bar)
Eliot: I'm gonna turn this place from a microbrewery into a gastropub. What do you think about that?
Parker: Teach me to like stuff.
Eliot: Parker, I don't have time for this, all right? I got to get this stuff done. Then I got to get back to the school
her sad, rejected face KILLED me
- - - - -
(Eliot puts a plate of food in front of Parker)
Parker: It's just food.
Eliot: It's not just food, all right? Some people could look at it and see just food, but not me. I see art. When I'm in the kitchen, I'm - I'm creating something out of nothing. You know what I mean? And sometimes, I crush it. Sometimes, it's crap. But either way, it makes me feel something.
Parker: Feel what?
Eliot: Just... feel.
Parker: Feel. Okay.
Eliot: You know, I didn't feel anything for a long time, and Toby taught me how to cook, and after he did, I started to feel stuff again. That's why I share it through my food. This is my art. This is my art, Parker. It's like letting a stranger in your head just for a second. And you allow them to feel what you're feeling. (pushes plate closer to Parker) Look again
he put off going to the kitchen to cook for parker and have a honest talk with her
he cares, your honor
- - - - -
Eliot: Parker can do it.
Parker: No, I can't. I don't even like food.
Parker: Except for chocolate and doughnuts.
Eliot: Listen to me, Parker, you can do it, all right? Remember everything that we talked about.
Eliot: Nate, she can do it.
Nate: Yeah, okay. So, Parker, you're the food critic.
eliot believes in her so much my heart is s o f t
- - - - -
hardison was legit eating a wholeass baguette and I’ve never vibed with someone SO HARD in my LIFE
- - - - -
Sophie: Oh, is it organically grown, ethically sourced, organically local?
she looks and sounds like everyone in my college town it’s ridiculous
- - - - -
Sophie: Parker, let's give them some micro-expressions. When you take your first bite, just give a hint of a smile. Remember, the key is micro.
(Parker takes a bite and doesn’t enjoy it)
Sophie: Well that didn't work.
Nate: Okay, so, what's wrong?
Sophie: When someone really smiles, then their eyes wrinkle up. You know, you just can't help it. But if a smile's fake, then the muscles - they don't contract.
Nate: There isn't anything she likes or can connect with.
Sophie: Parker, this time, when you take a bite, think of the first time you stole something.
(Parker smiles and Lampard relaxes)
Nate: Yeah, listen - Lampard needs to see some anxiety in her, you know, just to have him stick around.
Sophie: Parker, take a bite, then blink, then think of... jazz.
(Parker takes a bite, then starts gagging, spitting out the food. Lampard scrambles to her table)
everyone trying to get parker to find something she likes makes me WEAK they all love and support her so much just the way she is
- - - - -
eliot casually beating up the goon in the kitchen is an aesthetic
- - - - -
Eliot: How's it taste, Parker? You feeling anything?
Parker: The salsa verde is a nice marriage with the spring rolls, but while totally yummy, I just feel like... I should be feeling more
...
Parker: I can taste garlic and mushrooms. And something else that makes me feel different.
Hardison: Wait - was that for me? 'Cause I-I don't get it.
Parker: No. It's the food. I get it. I feel something
nate and sophie smiling at parker saying she feels something ,,, eliot being proud of her
- - - - -
(As Hardison turns, Rampone grabs Hardison and begins choking him)
Hardison: I'll bite you. I'll bite you!
(Hardison bites Rampone's hand and pushes the man back before running for the door)
Hardison: Nate, coming in hot
honestly biting people works
- - - - -
Rampone (looking at Eliot): Spencer, right? I thought I recognized you.
Eliot: Everybody out - now! (to Hope) Good job tonight.
Hope: Thanks.
(Eliot grabs a small bottle and sprinkles the contents onto a plate of food)
Rampone: See, the whole hippie thing threw me off.
(Eliot puts a plate of food on the edge of the counter)
Eliot: I'm gonna eat that when I'm done with you.
Rampone: Yeah, you were a good operator, if I remember correctly.
Eliot: It's a different guy.
Rampone: Bad attitude.
Eliot: Same bad attitude, though. You hurt my friend, Rampone.
Rampone: I should have killed him.
(Rampone reaches behind his back as he sprinkles spices on the plate of food. Eliot moves aside the tail of his shirt to reveal a knife)
Rampone: Like I'm gonna do to you.
(They both pull knives and begin trading slashes, hitting each other's blade. Rampone picks up a plate cover to use as a sheild. Rampone slashes Eliot on the arm and kicks him back. Eliot looks at the wound, then gestures Rampone forward)
Eliot: Come on.
(Eliot kicks Rampone, knocking him onto a counter. Rampone knocks him back, they continue to trade blows, knocking each other back and forth)
eliot is a different, better guy now and he ain’t dealing with your bullshit
- - - - -
Eliot: Not only did you and Lampard ruin my friend Toby's life, but you ruined the lives of the kids he was trying to help.
Nate (walking up): Eliot - Not worth it. Give him to the cops.
Rampone: Call off your dog. He's crazy.
Eliot: Crazy? I'm gonna cut your freaking head off and serve it on a platter.
Rampone: Call him off.
Nate (slowly walks closer, says softly): That's enough, Eliot.
(Eliot slowly releases Rampone and steps back)
Rampone: Thanks.
(Rampone swings at Eliot, who catches his fist. Nate punches Rampone, knocking him out)
Nate: Serve his - his head on a platter, huh?
(They begin to walk away)
Eliot: Was it too much?
Nate: No, actually, I liked it.
Eliot: I felt like it was a lot. Like, right when I said it, I felt like I may have gone too far.
for a second I was scared eliot was lapsing but I should have known better
- - - - -
Messenger: Package for... Alec Hardison.
Hardison: Oh, yeah. Got myself a laser.
Eliot (returns): Absolutely not. Don't give - don't sign for that.
Hardison: Don't sign for...? Hey, do you know what we're gonna be able to put on the pub's menu? On the pub's edible menu?
Eliot: Nate, you know...
Nate: Yeah, I know. You want to stab him in the...
Hardison: Stab what?
eliot: fOoD iS mY tHiNG
hardison: but EXPERIMENTAL food
eliot: *is ready to throw down*

Eliot: Where is Parker?
Nate: Oh, uh, she's, um, on a little trip.

So you think you’re in a pandemic? You are. And as someone who grew up learning how to plan for things like  this, the Cool Mom Eats team asked me to put together a helpful guide to keeping the family fed (and possibly entertained) during a potential quarantine.
So let’s jump right in.
To panic-shop or not panic-shop. That is the question.
You don’t need to fill your entire garage with toilet paper, although I truly commend you on preparation, should you be on an extreme high-fiber diet.
There are some items you should keep stocked though — but not just for times of home quarantine. As a recovering prepper, I found my “apocalypse pantry” a life saver after a tumultuous divorce, for example. And hey, who doesn’t want bragging rights at being able to fashion an Apple Brown Betty or chocolate chip cookie bars while the world freaks out? Just me?
(It’s just me, isn’t it.)
In seriousness though, I want to focus on the items you really need. But first, let’s get the pantry you already have, organized and ready for stocking.
While this is not a comprehensive list of absolutely everything you’ll need in your pantry/kitchen to feed your family, I assure you it’s a very workable list for you to get started. And if this all blows over faster than we thought, hey, you just saved yourself trips to the market in April and May.
Related: Beyond toilet paper: A helpful list of unexpected items to stock up on in case of a quarantine
Pantry prep: Start with a thorough purge
Before you load up the minivan with instant soup mix, there are a few things you’ll want to do first.
– First, know that this is not about Pinterest. If you are stacking items on top of each other, or making the use of every crevice of a small pantry, do it! Your food does not have to be arranged by color to make a beautiful ombre rainbow.
You are feeding your family, not entering a Instagram competition.
–Clean your shelves. If it’s been a while, can’t hurt to take everything out, give those shelves a good wipe down, and start fresh.
–Search for expired jars of food. Botulism can be a real problem here, and that twist-off can of pickled beets from 2016 isn’t sparking joy. Toss. (Of course keep in mind expiration and use-by dates aren’t always 100% accurate. As for those almost-expired pickles or that box of healthy cereal you hopped your kids would eat but they never did…that’s up to you. First, read this helpful article on food and expiration dates from Consumer Reports.
I’m not a gambler, so my instinct is generally to toss, but CR reminds us that “Nonperishable items like grains and dried and canned goods can still be used well past their label dates.”
–Organize items with the oldest in front. New items go behind existing food. Rotation is the key to a successful apocalypse pantry! Note: I’m currently living in a small apartment and by following the precepts below and being diligent with keeping track of and using my storage, have a four-month supply for me and my teenage son and our pets. It’s doable, it just requires a little forethought and organization
And hey, face those labels out. Not for Pinterest — for you.
– Group food in a sensical way. If you’re used to just shoving the microwave popcorn in front of the soup cans, in front of the flour container, maybe reconsider that. Grouping your foods by category (baking, breakfast, snacks, and so on) makes it easier to know whaat you have and what you need.
Now let’s go shopping!
Related: How to organize spices: 6 easy ideas that let you find what you need, when you need it.
The staples you want to stock
Here are my recos:
–Rice, dried beans, cereals, sugar, all-purpose flour and pasta last forever and are top of my list. Cereals are not just breakfast food. Same goes for dried oats and/or grits. Pasta is the real workhorse here, because of one simple reason: calories. If you need to stretch pantry items for multiple meals, you want foods that can get you to your calorie requirements with as little volume as possible, and here pasta is the waist-thickener you want. If you end up with sick people in your house, they’ll need calories to fight their way back to health.
–Biscuit/pancake mix is terrific for all meals, and don’t believe the old wive’s tale of it turning deadly after expiration, unless you have a highly rare mold allergy. Just keep it tightly sealed.
–As far as protein, it’s good to have frozen meats, poultry, fish… more on that below.
– I’d also grab those big jars of peanut butter if you can have nut butters in your home. (I’ll leave it between your family members to come down on the chunky/creamy side.) Protein sources are needed, and not everyone can tolerate (or want) beans, beans, the magical fruit multiple meals a week.
A good selection of protein-packed snacks
– More protein ideas: Don’t overlook options like canned tuna, sardines, jerky, and if all else fails, protein powder.
–As for canned fruits and veggies, 20 cans each of canned fruits and vegetables are a great starting point for your apocalypse pantry. They can liven up meals in a big way.  Fruit and veggie juices are also great additions, and coconut milk will make that 40-pound bag of rice way more enticing, come mealtime.
–Dried milk comes in handy, for cereal eaters and coffee drinkers alike. Also, get a couple of bulk containers of powdered drink mix like lemonade or fruit punch. The kids can get bored of plain water pretty fast.
–Jarred sauce isn’t a bad idea; get a variety of flavors. If you’re coming down with something and have people depending on you for meals who can’t cook themselves, you don’t want to spend all day at the stove stirring homemade sauce. While you’re at it, check your spice rack and make sure you have all the dried herbs you need to make that sauce more like homemade. (More below)
These are nerve-wracking times demanding thoughtful caution, but that doesn’t mean we have to eat like animals.
Stocking the freezer
Let’s turn some attention to the freezer.
I know we don’t all have massive storage in the kitchen; for what it’s worth, I have a small, apartment-sized fridge and have managed to stock 20 days worth of meat and veggies for myself and my son.
–Fresh berries and veggies like peas can be broken into smaller freezer bags and laid flat to freeze, and they stack wonderfully.
–If you’re a meat eater, load up on things that freeze well like chicken thighs and hearty cuts of beef and pork. Buy in bulk and break into portions to go in freezer bags. Plus, it’s easier to store and stack.
–Lord, be a ghost pepper on that raw chicken! I advise you season your raw meat with a marinade now and save time later. Plus, spices like jerk seasoning and other pepper-based spices are a preservative and inhibit microbial growth! You season your food not to replace proper cooking methodology, but also to enhance the flavor.
(And for the love of your gut, chicken sushi is not a thing, and y’all need to stop it.)
Don’t forget pets!
Should we face weeks or a full month of disruption in stores (remember, I’m an apocalypse planner), you don’t want your pets to suffer. How much do they eat in a day?
Multiply that by 30, and that’s what you need to have on hand. Don’t forget treats, supplements, litter, whatever else they need on a monthly basis.
Next-level pantry prep
These are the things that will make pantry food suck less, so take good notes.
–Stock up on dried spices. Garlic salt is everyone’s friend. Ditto to curry powder, ginger, cinnamon. Tarragon will liven up thawed chicken.
–Coconut milk with rice is another way to perk up bored taste buds.
–Bouillon for soup or as seasoning is always a great idea, and don’t overlook options like mushroom and onion bouillon as an alternative to chicken or beef.
–Items that will enable you to impress your family (or at least keep things interesting) include a variety of cooking oils, shortening for pie crusts, baking items for treats.
-Don’t forget fancy snack ingredients like chocolate chips, shredded coconut, condensed milk, graham crackers and the like.
When the kids are bored on day ten of self-quarantine, making a fresh batch of oatmeal-raisin cookies will eat up a lot of their time, and then while they’re recovering from sugar shock, you can grab the leftovers for yourself.
–Fresh herbs are a huge boon. Liz wrote about that here, including tips for apartment-dweller who may want to start a windowsill herb garden.
–Are you a coffee drinker? Do you like cream in it? You may have to resort to powdered creamer in a pinch, so be sure you have that on hand. Same for tea.
–As for water, please! There’s no need to hoard bottled water. Plus we all should be taking steps to reduce our single-use plastic. If that’s not top-of-mind right now, think about it economically — for the price you’d pay for a month’s worth of bottled water, you could easily buy a 2-gallon water filtration pitcher ($45 from our affiliate Amazon) for your fridge or a faucet-mounted filter.
We don’t have to hasten environmental collapse while coronavirus is going on, after all.
In summary:
Don’t Panic Rotation Spices and Seasonings Teach the kids to play gin rummy
We’ll get through this, and we’ll do it without resorting to MREs and Red Dawn-level terror.
Also, wash your hands!

Recipe Eats
Lets be honest, as fun as it is to go out and enjoy a nice meal and some fancy drinks with friends, this can get expensive (especially as college students). Many times as students we resort to ordering Jimmy John’s and spending our spare cash when we are tight on time. College is hectic. Between classes, work, family obligations, sleep, exercise, and trying to have a life, grocery shopping and cooking homemade meals is usually put on the backburner.
Thankfully, grocery shopping and meal prepping can be quick and easy with my guide to recipe eats. Being prepared before a trip to the grocery store will save you time and prevent you from mindlessly buying food that will just go bad later on in the week. Also, never go to the grocery store hungry. You will be tempted to put everything and anything under the sun in that cart of yours. I promise, it is a disaster waiting to happen for your credit card.
Every weekend I do a clean sweep of my refrigerator and freezer. I get rid of things that have accumulated throughout the week (leftover Topper’s) and certain ingredients that I am choosing not to consume (sugar). I take out a pencil and paper and write down my grocery list the old fashioned way, based on the meals I want to make for the week. Having roommates in college means sharing a tiny refrigerator. Cleaning and restocking every weekend ensures you are not wasting space with uneaten food and only buying ingredients that you plan on eating that week. I highly recommend buying meal containers on Amazon that take up the least amount of space to easily store cooked food in the refrigerator.
Here Are Some Of My Grocery Staples
PRODUCE
My favorite place to buy produce is Costco. The big packs of fruits and veggies will last you all week so that you will not have to make multiple trips to the store; however, I purchase my bananas and avocados at Kwik Trip since they tend to go bad fast. The awesome thing about this time of year is being able to take advantage of the farmer’s market. You can always find ingredients such as lettuce mix, strawberries and sweet potatoes at the market for cheap!
Broccoli
Romaine
Lemons
Strawberries
Bananas
Blueberries
Raspberries
Sweet Potatoes
Avocados
Brussel Sprouts
DAIRY
In my house, dairy is kept to a minimum. If I do purchase dairy I am extremely cautious about sourcing. Dairy has been linked to inflammation and breakouts and overall always upsets my stomach. Instead of cow’s milk, I find dairy products that are made with almond milk; however, this is completely a personal preference. I enjoy going to Whole Foods to purchase my non-dairy products.
Almond Milk (New Barn)
Cheese (Kite Hill) Yogurt (Kite Hill)
Ice Cream Probiotics (Good Belly)
Ghee Butter
PROTEIN
Unless going out for a burger and fries with friends, I choose not to consume red meat, so you will never find it in my refrigerator. I do not have anything against red meat, I am just one of those weird texture people. I gravitate toward turkey-based meats.
Boca Burgers
Lean Ground Turkey
Tuna
Eggs
Turkey Bacon
GRAINS
If you know one thing about me, it’s probably that I cannot get enough of carbohydrates. I basically grew up on bread and pasta. Unfortunately as my metabolism has slowed down, this habit also did. I still love grains. Everything in moderation!
Banza Pasta (made with chickpeas)
Sourdough Bread
Perfect Bars
Granola
Oats
Siete Tortilla Chips
MISCELLANEOUS
Hu Chocolate Bars
Georgia Grinders Almond Butter
Protein Powder Cacao Powder
Tumblr media
After an inside look at my grocery list and refrigerator, we can begin the meal prep. Here are some of my favorite recipe eats for the school year! You can always double the recipes to share with roommates or family.

I hope my grocery list and recipes help you break the staying-in stigma. Cooking is a great date idea, especially paired with a glass of wine and a movie! It is also a peaceful study break and a way to get your body up and moving from your couch on a Sunday. These recipes are easy! Trust me, I am not a whiz in the kitchen. I stick to simple recipes made with the least amount of ingredients that taste awesome and make me feel great.
Next time you pick up processed foods at a gas station or on campus at school, turn it around and look at the list of ingredients. You will be surprised by how many ingredients you have never heard of and most likely cannot even pronounce. What we are choosing to put in our bodies matters and affects the way we feel, behave, and perform each and every day. Remember, you do not have to be perfect. No one is. Perfection is boring, but be different by caring about yourself. I cannot wait to see you recreate my recipes.

PINOF Through the Ages
ah, November, that special time of year between halloween and christmas where i can buy “fun sized” (read “thumb sized”) chocolate bars and tinsel in the same aisle at walmart…
it’s also that time of year where members of the phandom, young and old, come together and collectively binge watch all the PINOF videos in preparation for the newest installment, as we wait with bated breath for what fresh hell we’re gonna be hit with this year.
today, i would like to share with you my observations of PINOF Through The Years, as we embark on the fucking trip that is sure to be PINOF 9…
Phil is not on fire (25 October 2009)
- can you IMAGINE what the hell Phil’s parents and/or brother must’ve thought when they were filming that/saw it for the first time?! Phil brings home this random kid he found in a train station and they start giggling like actual 12 year olds and wandering round the house talking about The Shining, using the exercise equipment Phil has probably never stepped foot on in his life, and drawing on their faces in sharpie? i can fucking HEAR Kath saying “Phil…honey…are you on the drugs?” and Martyn cackling like a lunatic in the background at his brother and his weird friend….
- Dan is trying so. damn. hard. not to laugh throughout the entire video.
- Speaking of Dan, even back then he was a sassy, cocky lil shit… “every animal makes that noise with you…” “wow Phil, i bet they’re all so glad they can see the diagram…” “no, okay, Phil has really crappy GHDs that don’t even work…they don’t even work…they are Poundland GHDs.”
- everyone always talks about The Tackle™ at the end of the video, but not NEARLY enough people talk about the lil smirk Phil gives the camera just before it…like, seriously?! that’s a “haha, here goes nothing!” kinda smirk. thats a “lol watch this!” kinda smirk. thats a “give the people what they want” kinda smirk…im just sayin’…
Phil is not on fire 2 (29 May 2010)
- okay, first of all, Dan…sweetheart…did you borrow that cardigan from your mum?
- Dan: “if you could choose which surname you had, what would be your decision?” Phil: “…umm…” *almost imperceptible but still definitely there jumpcut* Phil: “Striker!”….yeah, yeah, yeah, alright, everyone knows that Phil really said “yours” in an incredibly sheepish and embarrassed voice to Dan that made him go “awwww!….you’re cutting that out…”, but lets appreciate the editing skills it took to make the cut so completely (almost) seamless….
- oh. my. GOD! there is an ENTIRE post JUST about the microwave moment, but i have to reiterate it again for those who have recently entered this hellscape: imagine you are Phil Lester, a 23 year old adult with an ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEGREE, and in comes this adorable 18 year old twink trying to tell you that “microwave” is a fucking onomatopoeia! if i was Phil, THIS would be the moment i’d never let Dan live down. fuck “hello internet”, if he ever pissed me off i’d just be like “yeah, well, at least i know microwave isn’t a fucking onomatopoeia…” and walk away. argument done, you win every time.
- and that being said, again, lets appreciate how much we can learn from the facial expressions of Philip Michael Lester. in that moment, the look he gives Dan is pure “are you fucking serious…?” it is incredulity in a nutshell. it is shock and fondness and “oh my god you are such a twat…”. if there were a dictionary of facial expressions, Phil’s face at the moment Dan says fucking microwave is his favourite onomatopoeia would be the one next to the definition of “wtf?”
Phil is not on fire 3 (1 November 2011)
- 2011 was, by far, the WORST year for Dan and Phil’s hair. tragic. absolutely tragic…
- wow, Dan was right, every animal DOES make the same noise to Phil, including horrific genetic hybrids of land and sea mammals…
- Dan’s ability to almost unhinge his jaw is terrifying…and i’m sure has played a part in lots of phanfic that i’m definitely not going to look for ever…
- okay, seriously guys?! the word is vagina. say it with me: vagina. come on! all together now! it’s not a *awkward silence and weird hand gesture*, it’s not a “birth area", it’s just a vagina…for someone who knows so much about placenta, it strikes me as odd that Dan can’t say the word vagina out loud…
- i’ve never heard anyone giggle as much as Dan does in this video…
Phil is not on fire 4 (12 September 2012)
- the hair is better this year…slightly…
- whoever decided that those face mask things were a good idea needs to be buried alive…the way they look when they move is so horrifying, it gives me nightmares.
- the “gu-hoy!” noise Dan makes in this video (ts 3:21 if you’re at all interested) is my text alert on my phone and it makes me panic every time i watch it because im like “wtf is someone texting me for at 11:53 pm?!” but then i realize it’s just the video and that i’m actually still very alone and have no friends…
- (bloopers bonus!) petition to have 2012 be known in the phandom as, ‘The Year Dan Was Finally Comfortable With The Word Vagina’. that’s all it was guys! he learned a new word and just wanted to show how broad his vocabulary had become!
Phil is not on fire 5 (22 November 2013)
- and right off the bat we’re affronted again by the fact that Dan and Phil have zero concept of how female anatomy works….
- this is probably the most uneventful pinof in the entire series.
Phil is not on fire 6 (6 November 2014)
- to return to the hair discourse, i firmly maintain that 2014 was the best year for their haircuts/styles.
- Phil has no concept of what a sassy face is…
- #StopPhil201X needs to just be a recurring thing every year…
- that poor, poor snake…
- petition for Dan to sing the national anthem at every tour stop in 2018
- the idea of Dan trying to carry on the legacy of Phil Is Not On Fire after Phil’s death is so damn heartbreaking to me…i need a minute
- my lil demon soul is convinced that Phil was doing *something* to Dan’s neck when they both tried to fit through that sweater…i mean, look at his face when he laughs and says “stop". seriously?!
- something about Dan with his fringe swapped, on the wrong side of the bed, and wearing Phil’s shirt makes me feel almost uncomfortable, but in a way that i’m not entirely sure how to process…
- (bloopers bonus!) to reiterate! every animal does, in fact, make the same noise to Phil. this has now been confirmed 3 times.
- (bloopers bonus!) the amount of pleasure Phil is able to derive from any mention of Hello Internet warms the deepest recesses of my soul like the light of the sun after a 1000 year winter.
Phil is not on fire 7 (29 November 2015)
- uh, excuse me? do not drag my country in such a way. Canada is indeed real. it’s where maple syrup comes from. as someone who enjoys the simplicity of a good pancake, i expected better from you Mr. Philip.
- i feel so bad for their neighbours during the stress mushroom tug of war…like, can you imagine what those poor people must’ve thought of them? i’d love to interview their neighbours one day…better yet, their neighbours should write a book: “I Lived Next To YouTubers For 5 Years: The Adventure" and just have it be a chronicle of every weird thing they ever witnessed/encountered.
- with every passing year, Dan’s knowledge of fanfiction tropes and writing styles becomes increasingly disturbing…hide the smut everyone Daniel Howell is coming for it.
- Phil! with the puns! honestly Dan, how do you put up with this man?
- (bloopers bonus!) the way dans voice changes when he grabs Phils underwear and is just ENTHRALLED with the fact that he’s colour coordinates his boxers to his bedsheets is probably the single most disgusting thing i have ever witnessed in my entire life…i mean, i love it, but why are you SO EXTRA?!
Phil is not on fire 8 (29 November 2016)
- NOTHING in the animal or cutlery kingdoms should be born or created in the way Phil describes the birthing process of a spork!
- okay. OKAY! i love the fringes, i really do. i’m a fringe fan from way back, but the hair pushed back thing they get going on sometimes? i can get on board with that.
- aaaannd at 1:57 into pinof 8, the little game i like to play called “Phan or Viktuuri" had all of its lines blurred so far beyond recognition i’m not even sure which universe i’m living in anymore.
- the PSA for “staying hydrated"…such a harmless, and beautiful message about health and self care that the phandom managed to turn into a sex meme…but no one is surprised by that now, are they?
- i need to know why that stock photo exists in the first place…also, why the hell was Phil wearing sandals in November?
- (bloopers bonus!) Phil: “phil is not on fire 8! this time its…what the tagline?” the phandom: “…gayer than ever?” Dan: “full of regrets.” the phandom: “…i mean I GUESS!!!”
- (bloopers bonus!) everything about this blooper reel just confirms even more solidly that Dan is the biggest Phil fan in the world. i’m not gonna wax poetic about the compliments or the comparisons to sunshine or anything else, because at this point is it really necessary? no. i thought not.
and there we have it. just in time for PINOF 9 to be released, a full (and much more in depth than intended) recap of the saga thus far…wake me up when Gamingmas starts, cuz after this video comes out, i’m gonna need a solid week of sleep
