I think part of the reason why we’re seeing a spike in popularity for media like The Amazing Digital Circus and Mouthwashing and a resurgence of The Magnus Archives (aside from the fact they’re just really well made) is because, in scary and uncertain times, it’s more cathartic to see characters existing in awful situations and enduring as best they can than seeing characters in softer, easier, chiller worlds that don’t ring true to our complicated lives.

We want to see characters working through tech dystopias, existential nightmares, and supernatural horrors, because it feels like that’s what we’re working through ourselves, just trying to find meaning and small moments of joy amongst The Horrors.
