Putting the "Goth" in Gotham

yeah so I'm assigning a bunch of people subcategories of goth. And not just the characters where this would be something reasonable to do. Its been a while since I did something like this and I'm having fun with it!

If any artists want to draw the characters in the styles I give them, feel free, just tag me so I can see it!

Bruce: Baby Bat

Yes this is mostly because of his nickname. (Baby Bats, in case anyone hadn't heard someone call him that)

Selina: Mall

Girl would rob a Hot Topic or a Spencers blind ok. Y'all gotta be with me on this one.

Ecco: Romantic

its Ecco. Need I say more? This would ABSOLUTELY be her style. She's one of the ones I think would be more than happy to dress up according to their subcategory. She would just love it! Well Season 5 Ecco would idk about S4... She was a little less fun before that bullet. But trust me, she would be romantic goth.

Jeremiah: Vampire

this one was actually pretty difficult to decide. I jumped around alot before finally settling on Vampire goth. Me and Persephone had actually talked about this a while ago and I think we said Nu goth, and I was considering Victorian Goth for this. He likes to look put together, but still flamboyant, and with some of the outfits I've looked at, this is the one for him. Also, it's Jeremiah. Tell me he doesn't have eccentric vampire energy?

Jerome: Deathrock

His cult basically decided this for him lol. They already have a very punk style and I think if Jerome's life had gone a little differently he would have spent his teenage years in a heavy emo phase. This would be one of the subclasses he'd be all for.

Jonathan: Mopey

no I'm not calling him mopey, I'm saying mopey goth would be his style. Its very layered. I'm seeing a lot of long coats, scarves, boots, all in black. It could easily be combined with either medieval or Victorian styles to give a plague doctor-y appearance. But trust me, look it up yourself and tell me that's not Jonathan's style.

Jervis: Steampunk

you know what, Jervis would vibe with steampunk goth. Originally I was just thinking "ok what's one I haven't said yet that would involve a top hat" but then I remembered that in BTAS Jervis was working in some kind of engineering. What is literally characterized by tophats and engineering? Steampunk. So this feels like a good fit.

Oswald: Glam

almost gave this to Riddler but the fashions are more Oswald.

Ed: Nu

He's a little more reserved and timid, so I think he'd fit with some of the softer looks of nu goth.

Riddler: Cabaret

yeah I'm doing him seperate from Ed. They'd have very different styles. Riddler is all about the glitz and glamour so I gave him cabaret goth.

Lee: Gothabilly

her makeup was already pretty Gothabilly, and I think she could vibe with the fashion. She totally had goth vibes in the later seasons though I just don't know what to classify her style as (please feel free to give feedback!)

Gordan: none

well he sucks so he actually doesn't get one. Like everyone else would kinda be like "ok fine yeah whatever" (or totally into it) if I asked them to dress up in the category I gave them. But Jim? He's a party pooper. So he just wouldn't.

Barbra: Perky Goth

I think she'd be a perky goth. It leaves room for some bright colours, which I think she'd like, but it's not pastel goth. Its very fun and idk I just think she'd vibe with it. (Specifically like... Season 2 era though. In later season I think corp goth might be more her thing. Fetish goth could also work as an overall but I didn't really want to label anyone with fetish goth... 😅)

What I Say: i'm fine

What I Mean: DC couldn't let Jeremiah Valeska be a canon Joker depiction because Jeremiah and Bruce's connection is shaped corner to corner too closely to Bruce and Selina's bond for there to be space for any freerange interpretations other than, hey, resplendent homosexuality!!

Selina is tied to Bruce by the fate of watching him in his moment of death; with his parents gone, Bruce died that night in that back alley and was reborn a different child the day after. Jeremiah knew this; he tried to re-enact the whole night, to be the only one present with Bruce in the moment of his second metaphorical death and rebirth.

In 2x10 Bruce tells Selina that he has never met someone like her, that he trusts her with his life, and that he feels tied to her in a way that he couldn't explain but wouldn't change. Jeremiah and Bruce's connection starts on the same grounds; Jeremiah has never met someone like Bruce, he trusts him with his life and wants Bruce to trust him with his own, "we are bound; him and i", the bond is, again, something Bruce cannot understand and "will not try to change". having the 2x10 scene in mind is integral to understanding Jeremiah and Bruce's relationship because it is the only instance in which Bruce acknowledges and consciously owns a romantic bond with another person, in direct contrast to outright coming out and telling Jeremiah that "he means nothing to him"; to noone else has Bruce been so vulnurable and transparent, both in love and in hatred.

Jeremiah shoots Selina a moment after Bruce kisses her; Selina ruins Jeremiah's entire plans a moment after Jeremiah holds a knife to Bruce's throat, holding him by the collar, face three inches from Bruce's. Jeremiah kills Selina in front of Bruce, Selina kills Jeremiah, again, in front of Bruce.

And it certainly was the choice of all time to have both Jeremiah and Selina in the season 5 finale say Bruce "left them behind", talking to a shadow figure that they can't quite tell is there or not. They're also both the only people who are not quite sure of Batman's existence but immediately recognise him the moment they see him from 300 miles away.

SIDE NOTE BEFORE I START WITH THIS: It's based on Bruce's sexuality, not his character. As much as I would love to talk about his character, that's not the importance of why I do character studies

S1-3, Bruce comes off mostly straight in this show. He shows interest to Selina, which is consistent with lore based off of the comics and live-action movies. During S3, Selina asked Bruce if he actually likes her or if he does, because she's the only girl that isn't grossed out with him. In the early stages of S3, Bruce also dates Silver, which shows, as far as we know, he's straight

During S4, the perspective changes. Bruce meets Jeremiah and immediately wants to be his friend. They're friendship does last only for a short while, but there are subtle hints that Bruce thinks differently of Jeremiah than when they first met. Call it far fetched if you will, but during S5, Bruce didn't want Selina to kill Jeremiah. It wasn't only for her cause, but it was obvious that Bruce still cared about Jeremiah despite what he had become. In the end, Bruce accepted that his bond with Jeremiah was now based on hatred, feelings and obsession.

Bruce's gaze softened as soon as he met her y/e/c eyes, he finished helping her before continuing the sentence "no problem..I'm Bruce, Bruce Wayne" he introduced himself again like he did years before.

Bruce was aware of what had happened and of her condition because he had spoken to the doctor who had told him everything and also given him suggestions on how to treat it.

From the pallor that appeared on her face, however, he could tell that she remembered something because she jumped up embarrassed, apologizing to him and treating him exactly as everyone else did but Bruce didn't want that, he wanted everything to go back to the way it had been years before, with her in his arms and in the pictures hanging all over the manor.

The billionaire wanted so much but he had to wait, to be patient and he knew it, that's why he had brought Jason with him to try and unlock some memories.

The young boy ran quickly to his mother, smiling excitedly. He couldn't hold back himself, his arms wrapped around her, holding her tightly "mama!" he exclaimed, stopping when he realized that the woman he was hugging was looking at him strangely and confused, touching his face and hair before a light hit her face making her realize everything and hug the child tightly.

Several months after the meeting Bruce had on the same day he sent Catwoman to prison the man went to see her, there were no words or regrets, his serious face remained the whole time as he threw a newspaper on the table and walked away leaving Selina alone to read the headline of it which turned out to be more than one "Mrs Wayne back in town" "Mr and Mrs Wayne are pregnant" "The happy couple back on the front pages" "'Love at first sight' words of Bruce Wayne".

I am actually going to stay mad about how stupid it is that Barbara somehow knows she's pregnant like a week, tops, after she and Jim had sex

the passage of time in this season is in shambles. like it's never been a particularly solid timeline, we are infamously NOT running a tight ship over here on Gotham, but come on

whatever compliment sandwich: sweet young David Mazouz really mastered the Bruce Wayne tendency to stand hunched over a series of maps looking stoic and haunted in a black turtleneck

this episode just casually drops that Bruce's parents were murdered on June 27th and I'm so glad that I'm watching this episode today (June 24th) instead of three days from now because I probably would have been so unnerved seeing the real date reflected back at me from this show that I'd like. I don't know. start believing in angel numbers and crystal healing or something.

Barbara asking Lee to be her obstetrician is actually like. insane 4d chess flirting. yes I still think they should hook up I don't care they've both done worse (Jim)

is Lee even qualified to be an obstetrician.

sorry maybe I should clarify that the main Bruce plot of this episode is tht Jeremiah has kidnapped and brainwashed a.) Alfred and b.) two randos who have been given plastic surgery to look like Thomas and Martha so that he can force Bruce to relive the night they were murdered BUT with Jeremiah there this time because he's upset that he wasn't there for one of the most important nights of Bruce's life. they're currently having dinner in the Wayne Manor kitchen while Jeremiah breathes heavily at Bruce about how intimate this is.

what I'm saying is that this would all be deeply and upsettingly erotic were one participant not almost certainly too young to vote

like I said the timeline is SO funky and they're so careful to never tell you how old Bruce and Selina are but David Mazouz is 22 RIGHT NOW four years after the series ended. so.

this is like a freshman level plot to thread the needle on but that's really impressive for Gotham

they even managed to cram the Riddler in this episode jesus christ. pengriddler are fighting about Oswald homosexually naming his dog after Ed if you were curious. Oswald would like it to be noted that this was a compliment because he's VERY fond of that dog.

left off on Pengriddler deciding to make nice again and then promptly cuts to Oswald leading Ed into his house... this close to inventing m/m sex in the Gotham universe if Barbara hadn't interrupted

the Riddler has like 9263 unpleasant and unnerving traits but being able to look at a woman who's three days pregnant and instantly clock that she's expecting just rocketed to the top of the list

The press hounds the family for days (“Jeremiah Valeska kills Jason Wayne”, a headline whispered long before being printed), but the funeral is kept private. Some of Jason's friends, Lucius's children among them, are present with their families. Dick Grayson sits at the front, choking on repressed sobs. Alfred is at the other side of Bruce, with a staight back and a stoic expression; Jim tells himself he'll have to take him away from the manor, some place without witnesses where he'll be able to finally let it all out. At each side of Jim stand Harvey and Lee -Harvey on his cane, Lee clawing at Jim's forearm-, neither of them disguising the tear tracks on their cheeks. And Barbara, little Barbara Lee, feet planted lifelessly on the stools of her wheelchair, who insisted on coming straight from the hospital and wears the bitterest expression Jim has ever witnessed on a person. Selina isn't among the crowd, but Jim knows he saw a shadow among the gravestones. Barbara senior, who stands all the way back, saw it too. im trying So Hard to think of things abt him ive never said before

he is the character that has cheated death the most out of everyone in the series!! he almost dies a couple times every season but he always makes it out alive

now, that being said, there are many characters who have died and come back to life (we'd be here all day if i tried to list them all), but oswald just refuses to die At All

this one isnt Very interesting but he is one of the only characters with a confimed age (the others being bruce, selina, jeome & jeremiah by extension, and butch) butch also calls him 'son' a couple times despite only being like 3 years older than him which i think is funny

i calculated his body count one time and it was well over 100 across all 5 seasons lol king <3

he is So smart both in terms of general intelligence and cunning and hes really patient, he can wait forever to get what he wants. he started a gang war by playing both sides over the course of many months

he accidentally adopted an orphan named martin with an affinity for violence and i love him to bits <3 unfortunately he was sent out of got.ham for his safety and we never saw him again which is devastating i miss my son :((

In my story, I want to include the canon. So I need to handle other people's doing in what Nygmobblepot are up to.

I think I went off track thinking about how to properly include Jeremiah, Bruce/Batman, Lee, Barbara, Harvey, Alfred, Selina, whoever...

I got lost. It scared me.

In order to not run away from my own fanfiction, I need to focus back on the development of the main relationship (Nygmobblepot) and build the background shenanigans around it.
