The low hum of jazz music filled the opulent interior of Club Alchemy, its dim lighting casting an air of mystique over the patrons lounging in plush velvet seats. Mariah surveyed the scene from her private balcony, her sharp eyes scanning for any sign of trouble. The club had become a resounding success, attracting Atlanta’s elite with its promise of luxury and discretion. Yet beneath its glitzy facade, the club remained a front for a much darker enterprise.
Two years earlier, Mariah and her loyal confidante, Taina, had narrowly evaded a federal raid that threatened to dismantle their weapons trading ring. The close call had been a stark reminder of the fragility of their empire. Determined to secure a more legitimate veneer, Mariah had transformed a derelict mansion in Buckhead into Club Alchemy, a sanctuary where deals were brokered and alliances forged under the cover of night.
Despite the club’s success, Mariah was always looking for new avenues to expand their operations. She found one in the form of exclusive casino nights, an enticing addition that promised high stakes and higher profits. However, running a casino in Georgia was illegal, and whispers of their activities had reached the ears of the state legislature.

Rep. Greene paled, the bravado slipping from her features. “You wouldn’t dare.”

Cybercriminal Gets 10-Year Sentence for $4.5 Million Money Laundering Scheme

A 31-year-old man from Sandy Springs, Georgia has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for laundering over $4.5 million through business email compromise (BEC) scams and romance fraud schemes targeting the elderly. Malachi Mullings pleaded guilty to the money laundering offenses in January 2023. Shell Company Used as Conduit for Illicit Funds According to court documents, Mullings opened 20 bank accounts under a sham company, The Mullings Group LLC, to serve as a conduit for laundering the fraudulent proceeds from at least 2019 to July 2021. The scheme netted millions of dollars through: - BEC attacks targeting a healthcare benefit program, private companies, and other entities - Romance fraud schemes defrauding elderly individuals Tactics of BEC Scams and Romance Fraud A BEC scam is a form of targeted cybercrime where bad actors trick executives and employees into sending money or sensitive data to accounts under their control through social engineering tactics. These attacks often involve compromised accounts used to send phishing emails urging vendors to make wire transfers or change banking details. On the other hand, romance scams typically involve deceiving elderly individuals into sending money under the pretense of a romantic relationship. Lavish Spending and Ongoing Cybercrime The Department of Justice (DoJ) stated that "together with his co-conspirators, Mullings engaged in financial transactions designed to conceal the fraud proceeds and used some of the proceeds to purchase luxury items, such as expensive cars and jewelry." This included a Ferrari purchased with $260,000 from a romance scam. In a related development, a Russian national named Evgeniy Doroshenko has been indicted for his role as an access broker, breaking into corporate networks and selling that initial access to other actors on cybercrime forums between February 2019 and May 2024. The DoJ emphasized that "cybercrime forums, like the one used by Doroshenko to sell access to victim computer networks, are online forums where cybercriminals promote and facilitate a wide variety of criminal activities including, among other activities, computer hacking and trafficking in stolen data." Georgia will shut down its commercial surrogacy industry in 2024

The war in Ukraine is changing the geography of commercial surrogacy. Before the war, Ukraine was the surrogacy capital of Europe, with good medical care, loose regulation, and an abundant supply of poor young women. Surrogacy agencies in Kyiv and elsewhere are still operating, but parents and surrogacy brokers are on the hunt for other countries. Ukrainian surrogates are also travelling to countries like Greece, North Cyprus, and Georgia to be impregnated and gestate their baby. 
Further disruption is expected, as a conservative government in nearby Georgia has announced that it will ban commercial surrogacy from 2024. In June Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili declared that a ban was needed to protect surrogate mothers and children and to prevent human trafficking. He also warned that surrogacy agencies might place babies with gay couples, which is forbidden in Georgia. Altruistic surrogacy will be permitted, but only for Georgians. 
“Foreign citizens have turned this issue into a business, and in recent years, there is no regulation at all regarding this issue”, said Mr Garibashvili. “I do not want to put it harshly, but there are orders made [for children]. This is also happening online, [where] there are too many advertisements, and we think it is very disturbing to leave this issue unregulated”.
An Australian surrogacy consultant, Sam Everingham, told Al-Jazeera that “With Georgia being unable to cope with this increased demand since the outbreak of the war, what that’s meant now is increased pressure on places that have got reliable programmes like Canada and the USA, and increased uptake of programmes in countries which are sort of emerging, such as Argentina, Mexico and even Uganda.”
Armenia is another country in the Caucasus which welcomes surrogacy. According to a feature in the Institute for War and Peace Reporting, Armenian surrogates must be aged between 18 and 35, have at least one child of their own and, if married, have the written consent of her husband. She must undergo medical and genetic testing to ensure she is healthy. A surrogate cannot be the egg donor.
