also while im thinking of it heres some things i do that make me more in tune w my theriotypes .. mayhaps someone else will find it useful :P
- journaling as mentioned in my last post
- loose or baggy clothing to make me less aware of my body being human
- socks that match the color of my theriotypes' paws (such as black for fox)
- documentaries, wikipedia pages, books, etc + the wikipedia pages for therianthropy in general
- surrounding myself with items of my 'type or things similar
- being on the ground or making nests there
- going for walks, esp listening to music that makes me shifty
- okay time for the more absurd ones . Bushcraft videos... like those videos on youtube that r like "building a house in the forest survival snowstorm bushcraft" LOL i like the channel "luxon bushcraft" because he has a dog + the property he owns is his and gets used even after the filming is finished
- dog 101 videos .. theyre short clips that detail the basic facts of dog breeds and most can be found on youtube! i like the one about australian shepherds obviously. its also just nostalgic because i remember watching them on tv when i was younger
- brushing my hair and it being soft / fluffy reminds me of my fur , specifically wolf . theres just something wolfish about grooming your fur like that [shrug]
- okay and finally listening intently to noises and being able to analyze them makes me shifty Idk its just a good feeling to know my senses are still keen

@michigander514 I think the middle one was my focus at the time. Basically our society values all the wrong things and we suck at preparing anyone for reality. This knowledge is essential for preventing a large scale interruption of society from wiping out millions, or even the near extinction of humanity.
It's easy to say "modern urban man bad, trad rural man good" but that's not the point and goes way beyond that. Often people in rural areas are just as ignorant on what I'm talking about. So I'll work in reverse to keep a clear line of thought:
Almost nothing is handed down anymore and if it is the maintenance is not taught. Very very few people know how to maintain much less recreate many older technologies. If a power grid drops and someone had older non-electric equipment on hand, that doesn't mean they know how to use it properly. We see this down south with hurricanes and up north with ice storms periodically. They'll find someone that didn't make it despite having the tools because of improper use.
Working back another step the western world's declining amount of skilled and semi-skilled manufacturing means our ever increasing dependence on uninterrupted global trade. And I think anyone looking at the last 3 years has felt the effects of that one. Building on the point above, if you have oil or gas lanterns and lamps for redundancy, you probably know that the mantles and wicks aren't made in the US or UK and are almost exclusively from China and India. When you attempt to make your own or a batch for you and your friends/family you learn that knitting is involved and start to see where this is going.
Taking this to it's base elements. People should be taught primitive skills some general, some regionally specific, and some general scientific principles of air flow, pressure, corrosion, how and why infection spreads, etc to figure out the rest. Ideally a teenager lost in the woods should be able to survive the more common threats. They should be found cooking a fish over a fire next to a shelter and more inconvenienced than scared.
Schools act like they are preparing kids for STEM careers but won't even prepare them for the 101 level college courses to pursue those fields, and so after 13 years they've lerned nothing. Now you have several generations (this is an older problem than millennials and gen z) that can't fix anything in their home, can't build a replacement from store bought components, or just get by on primitive tech/tek until a replacement can be found. I'm all for space exploration, finding out what's at the bottom of the sea, designing advanced computers, but advanced sciences should be on the top of a skill pyramid with a bushcraft/primitive base and various applied sciences and "trade" skills in the middle.
Prepare for posts and ramblings about primitive man and the failings of society.

Victorinox Swiss Army Knife Camping & Outdoor Survival Guide
101 Tips, Tricks & Uses
by Bryan Lynch
One year my brother gave me a Swiss Army Knife as a gift. I ended up taking it back to upgrade and get more gadgets on the knife knowing I would use it often in the future. How did I know this? I was living overseas and had moved a number of times only to find I didn’t have the tools I needed to put a toy together or fix equipment or open a can or bottle of wine SO I wanted the BIG knife with EVERYTHING on it. And, that is what I traded it in for. I have carried that knife with me for decades and still take it out from time to time to use when needed. I have given Swiss Army Knives to friends as gifts even giving his and hers knives to very good friends. I have also taken it to school (to teach sixth grade) and had a student steal the pen and glasses screw driver I had bought separately to have should my daughter’s glasses need tightening or I should need to leave a message somewhere.
In this book I read about the various knives Victorinox produces and tried to identify the one I have. I learned how to clean the knife...and it has not yet been cleaned as mentioned in this book so see myself doing so soon. I learned how to replace springs and how the knife should be personalized and that I can replace the red outer layer my husband chipped fixing something outside one day. I also came away wanting to take a survival course and at 67, female and living in Lebanon don’t see that happening any time soon ;) Who wouldn’t want to know how to make cord from trees to tie something with or how to handle situations that were mentioned in this book?
Did I enjoy this book? Definitely
Would I buy this book? Yes
Would I give it as a gift to others? Yes...with a Swiss Army Knife
Who do I see benefiting from this book? Just about anyone but perhaps scout leaders and survivalists would benefit most.
Thank you to NetGalley and Fox Chapel Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review.

—
Buyer’s Guide
Surviving in the wilderness goes well beyond using the well-known S.T.O.P. acronym (7). While stopping, thinking, observing, and planning is important, there are a variety of skills you’ll need beyond that. This Buyer’s Guide will help you choose the survival book that’s best for your needs.
What is your outdoor experience?
The first major consideration when selecting a survival book is how much wilderness experience you already have. If you’re a seasoned backpacker who wants to learn more about surviving with the bare minimum, a book like Advanced Bushcraft might be appropriate.
On the other hand, if you’re finding a new interest in outdoor adventure and survival, Canterbury’s other selection, Bushcraft 101 may start you out with the basics you need. It’s important, also, to remember that extensive backpacking experience doesn’t necessarily equate to bushcraft experience, and it also might not prepare you to handle an extended off-grid living situation.
Your experience with the outdoors, wilderness, and survival techniques will dictate which survival book you choose. Make sure you’re honest with the information and experience you already have so that you can select a book that adds to that, rather than goes right over your head because it’s too advanced.
What areas do you want to learn about?
The second consideration is what areas you’re most interested in learning about. The books we’ve detailed above cover shelter building, fire starting, food and water collection, wilderness medicine, creating tools, and much more.
You may be a casual backpacker with a recent injury experience that left you feeling like you need to learn more about wilderness medicine. You may be a hurricane-survivor who is considering whether you’d still be prepared if the three days you were without power turned into a week or a month.
Survival, both in the wilderness and sometimes in urban areas, involves a lot of sub-topics. It’s important to understand why you’re looking for a survival book. Narrowing down your specific interests will help you make a better book choice.
What is survival scenario is your biggest concern?
The information in the books we’ve highlighted will prepare you for a wide variety of survival scenarios. Understanding which scenario causes you the most concern will help you decide which book to purchase.
For example, there are many different situations to prepare for if you’re an avid backpacker in the Pacific Northwest. But those situations will be vastly different from what the backcountry fisherman in the Everglades will encounter. Knowing what scenarios are most pertinent to your activities will help you select the book that’ll be your best resource.
Frequently Asked Questions
On average, the National Park Services in the United States responds to 11.2 incidents daily. Each operation costs around $895. We hope that these survival books can bring both of these numbers down, and this section will feature some of the most frequently asked questions about survival.
What is the most critical part of wilderness survival?
Most experts will tell you that the first ten minutes of being lost is when most search fatalities make their deadly mistake. Staying calm and using your head (not your feet) very well may be the most critical aspect of survival.
What is Bushcraft?
The dictionary defines bushcraft as “skill at living in the bush.” In greater depth, bushcraft is the art of using the resources provided by our natural environment to survive and thrive in the great outdoors (8).
What is a bug out bag?
A bug out bag is an emergency evacuation kit that contains everything you’ll need to help your family go from a dangerous area to a safe area without a lack of supplies or equipment. They contain essential survival gear and are used widely by first responders, military personnel, and medical professionals.
What are the 5 keys to wilderness survival?
The five common keys most people talk about are: know how to build a shelter, know how to signal for help, know what to eat and how to find it, know how to build and maintain a fire, and know how to find water and prepare safe water to drink.
What are some common mistakes people make in the wilderness?
Common mistakes that reduce your odds of survival include no shelter, a lack of navigation tools, poor knowledge, miscalculating risk, incorrect clothing, an inability to obtain drinkable water, no signal plan, and the lack of ability to make fire.
What is the best way to orient your position in the wilderness?
While it can be tempting to use a prominent peak or another feature of land marked on a map to orient yourself, many experts suggest using a baseline, such as a road or a river. This is because it’s easier to hit a long target (like a power line or stream) than it is to hit a tall one (think hilltop) or a small one (like a pond).
When you’re heading out on a hunt or hike, note which direction you need to travel to hit your baseline. That way, if you become confused and disoriented later on you can take a bearing and walk a straight line in that direction until you find your baseline.
What is your first step when you realize you’re lost?
Your first step immediately after you realize you’re lost is to mark your position and find your way back to the last familiar place. Survival experts refer to this as the “home base” method of navigation.
What is the warmest place to camp once the sun goes down?
Generally, the warmest place to make camp if you’re lost and the sun is going down shortly is a forested north slope. South-facing slopes, whether they’re wooded or open, are more subject to extreme temperature shifts. North-facing slopes, although they may be colder during the day, will say warmer during the nights.
Summary
Did you know that you should tell at least three people where you’re going when leaving for an adventure? (9) This is just one example of what you might learn by picking up one of the survival books we’ve outlined in this article. We hope the information we’ve provided is useful when it comes to finding the survival book that’s right for you!

Legendary Bushcraft Skills You Need To Learn
Remember back to the day when you lit up your first fire. This simple bit of Bushcraft gave you so much joy that it probably still brings up amazing memories.
Now imagine what it would feel like to purify water for the first time or learning how to navigate and building shelters. Bushcraft is an incredible skill and if you learn the basics the outdoors becomes your playground
So let’s wind back a few things, to the days where hanging out in the bush was how we survived and all we cared about was our next meal, shelter and most importantly staying warm.
Let’s focus on a little bit of bushcraft that is so rewarding and yet everyone can pick it up.
Here are the top things you need to learn that will make your next trip into the bush amazing.
Bushcraft 101
Starting fires
Starting a fire is one of the best things you can do when going out into the bush. You are able to cook your food, boil some water, protect yourself from predators and also build up morale with it.
Sometimes though it is really difficult to start a fire. One thing you can do before going out into the bush is to learn and familiarise yourself with what kind of tinder is best for igniting fires.
Additionally, you could take a few basic fire starters with you, here is a list I prepared earlier. fire starters that will turn you into a fire God at your next camp
Before you start a fire make sure you keep yourself and others safe.
Clear an area around and above the fire so as to make sure it doesn’t spread out of control. If you have ignitable substances, make sure to keep them a few meters away for added security.
Finally, make sure there aren’t any trip hazards around the fire which could cause someone to trip and stumble into the fire. When you are out in the bush the nearest hospital could be hours away.

Collecting and filtrating water
adventure.howstuffworks.com
Most of us know that you can collect water from a river, lake, dam, and stream but did you know that in many instances drinking water from said sources can cause you to get ill. One of the worst things while being out in the bush is to get d’s and v’s (diarrhea and vomit). It could not only be dangerous to your health but also cause you to have to cancel your trip a lot sooner.
It is always important to filter the water before drinking.
A simple way to do that is by using what this planet has way to much of. Plastic bags. Fill it with layers of rocks, sand, and charcoal (which you can get after you made your fire) and let the water filter through the layers.
This will remove most of the nasty pathogens which can make you sick and also, it’s a great and simple project you can create as you are setting up your shelter.
Learn to navigate
Navigation is one of my favorite things while in the outdoors. In my opinion, it’s the key which opens up the whole world to you.
With a simple map and compass you can get into the most remote places, and when you do, it is such a sense of pride and achievement that it can really make you feel inhuman.
There are plenty of video’s on youtube which can teach you the basic’s but the only way you can really learn is to practice.
Even professional navigators can get it wrong at time’s, that is why you need to practice over and over in different terrains.

Learn to build simple shelters
After a day of collecting food, water and navigating it is amazing to get back to a shelter sit by the fire and eat and drink the spoils of your day. Best of all you don’t have to make anything fancy at first, but in saying that you have all the materials you could possibly need all around you in the bush.
Use timber for structure and the frame.
Use leaves, twigs, sticks and other ground foliage as thatching for your roof and bedding.
Use stones as a way to isolate your fire from the surroundings. Additionally, you can make cutting utensils with rocks
Make rope out of fibrous materials you have at hand. For example, grass, bark fiber, and palm fibers.

Stay Positive
Sometimes you might get hungry, other times the shelter you might build can fall apart, then the fire won’t start. This is all part of learning curve. As time progresses you will begin to get better and better at the simple tasks and in no time you will be able to do more challenging bushcraft.
Till then make sure you stay high spirited and focus on the beauty of being out in nature, disconnected from technology and enjoying what this planet has to offer.
Have you done any bushcraft? What was your favorite experience? Let us know in the comments below and as always make sure to share this article so others can get inspired to be outdoors.
Seriously though, learn to find natural sources of tinder for whatever areas you will be in. Learn the difference between hard and soft woods.
Learn how to collect water through various means, and how to filter it.
Learn to recognize game trails, and how to construct traps and snares.
Learn how to construct basic shelters, and which ones to use in different areas/climates.
Learn to navigate.
Learn to start a fire with various methods.
Learn edible plants and berries, and how to differentiate between poisonous ones.
Learn to make rope or cordage from available sources.
Learn to go to bed hungry, and to keep a positive attitude.
