A group of Republican lawmakers say it's time to protect the border--not that other border, but the one north of the United States, which many Americans forget.
That northern border is usually an afterthought in American politics, comfortably ensconced on the back burner of the country's searing debates about the Mexican border.
More than two dozen Republicans have a mission to change that, and they held a news conference outside the Capitol on Tuesday.
They announced the creation of a new northern border security caucus, aimed at flagging concerns about the perennially disregarded border with Canada.
Canadians are well aware of the surge in northbound migration, with people crossing into Canada from Roxham Road in Quebec, spurring Ottawa to plead for a new migration pact with the U.S.
What's gotten less attention is the exponential surge in migration going the other way.
These American politicians want more people to realize there's a historic increase from Canada involving foreign migrants entering the U.S. and even Canadians with criminal records trying to sneak in undetected.
One speaker after another acknowledged that the scale of this challenge is minuscule compared to the border with Mexico, but said it's time to pay attention.
The group's wish list is still ill-defined, but what they clearly want is more monitoring technology and more agents, which means more jobs in their border districts.
"We are being assaulted because we don't have a border," said Ryan Zinke, a congressman from Montana who served briefly in Trump's cabinet.
Tuesday's events shed light on challenges on all sides: for this particular group of politicians, for the U.S., and for Canada.
The limited interest in Canadian migration was evident inside and outside the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday.
Not a single American reporter showed up to ask any questions at the outdoor press conference.
The only questions were from Canadian journalists, and they were about things like how the countries could cooperate on migration.
After a few such queries, the most senior politician there, the No. 3 House Republican, Elise Stefanik, interjected to urge a focus on what truly matters here: There's a border crisis, and it's President Joe Biden's fault.
It was a similar theme inside the Capitol on Tuesday at the first hearing of the new Republican majority in the House homeland security committee.
The hearing was about the consequences of lax borders on states across the country, with migrants and drugs spilling into every state.
This was made clear when a witness from Michigan shared a heartbreaking story about her two sons being killed by fentanyl-laced pills.
The committee chairman, Mark Green, pointed out, "You're in Michigan, a ways from the border."
In fact, the witness, Rebecca Kiessling, a conservative activist, lives in Rochester Hills, Mich., a 40-minute drive from Canada in moderate Detroit traffic.
That's because in U.S. political parlance, "the" border is almost always the one located approximately 24 hours of drive time south of Kiessling's home, in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico.
This group of northern conservatives wants to change that. News and other U.S. outlets have, in fact, written about the massive migration surge from Canada.
Statistics from U.S. Customs and Border Protection show exponential growth in migration from Canada, with more than 55,000 encounters in the first four months of this fiscal year—almost eight times the 2021 rate.
These encounters can include anything from an arrest to an asylum claim, and they've disproportionately involved citizens of India, Mexico, and Canada.
At the recent pace, there would be almost 170,000 such encounters at the northern border this year, which, for context, is barely five percent of the comparable number for the southern border with Mexico, which is trending toward three million encounters.
Yet these lawmakers want Americans to realize drugs like fentanyl and cocaine are also coming through Canada, albeit in smaller amounts.
"These numbers are outrageous. And they cannot go unanswered," said Rep. Lisa McClain, a Republican from Michigan.
What they want is better technology for communications and detection of some sort, more frequently deployed on the southern border.
One Republican from Texas told a story about meeting border agents in his district who'd been redeployed five times from their normal posting in the north.
The lawmakers distributed the following statistics: barely 10 percent of U.S. border patrol agents are stationed along the Canadian frontier.
New York Republican Nick Langworthy said his part of the country has been left understaffed because border agencies are underfunded and struggling.
"Border patrol resources [are] trying to put a tourniquet on a gushing crisis at the southern border," he said.
Kelly Armstrong of North Dakota said he's sure Canadians are frustrated too. He said the Biden administration is allowing unlawful movement while blocking lawful movement and trade with a continuing vaccine mandate for travel and his rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline.
Several speakers did mention, as a factor driving the phenomenon, Canada's more permissive policies, such as visa-free travel for Mexicans and less stringent student visa rules.
They suggested that people who can't get into the U.S. lawfully have the option to travel to Canada and try entering illegally.
One border-union official at the event referred to the tragic case involving a family of four from India last year: The father got a Canadian student visa, and the whole family subsequently froze to death while trying to walk into the U.S. from Manitoba.
But it's a sign of the political pressure Biden faces at home on immigration as Canada asks him to accept more migrants.
The governments of Canada and Quebec are pushing for the expansion of the Canada-U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement.
But the U.S. ambassador to Ottawa, in a recent interview with CBC News, refused to even acknowledge the countries that are discussing this.
One Washington-based immigration expert, Theresa Cardinal Brown, told CBC News the U.S. has no political appetite to take on this issue right now.
In that same interview, however, Cardinal Brown also said that perhaps the spike in migration from Canada creates an incentive for the U.S. to talk.
"That may be a basis for a conversation," said Brown, an immigration analyst at the Bipartisan Policy Center, a Washington think tank.
The U.S. hasn't paid much attention to the northern border since the post-9/11 era of the terrorist movement dominating the Canada-U.S. conversation and leading to security measures that slowed travel.
But there could be other advantages to the renewed attention, such as leverage. When Biden heads to Ottawa, his Canadian counterparts making the pitch for a new migration pact might now point to these numbers and argue that a new pact would help both countries control irregular entry and tell the president: Let's make a deal.

10 Startups That'll Change the Convection Heating System Industry for the Better
Gas Furnace And Burners: Its What We Do!
In variable climates, the system may consist of a reversing valve that switches from heating in winter to cooling in summer. By reversing the flow of refrigerant, the heat pump refrigeration cycle is altered from cooling to heating or vice versa. This enables a center to be warmed and cooled by a single piece of devices by the exact same ways, and with the exact same hardware.
Typical storage mediums are deep aquifers or a natural underground rock mass accessed by means of a cluster of small-diameter, heat-exchanger-equipped boreholes. Some systems with small storages are hybrids, using complimentary cooling early in the cooling season, and later on employing a heatpump to chill the blood circulation coming from the storage. The heatpump is added-in since the storage functions as a heat sink when the system is in cooling (instead of charging) mode, causing the temperature level to gradually increase throughout the cooling season.
When economizing, the control system will open (fully or partially) the outside air damper and close (fully or partially) the return air damper. This will trigger fresh, outside air to be provided to the system. When the outside air is cooler than the required cool air, this will permit the demand to be satisfied without using the mechanical supply of cooling (normally chilled water or a direct growth "DX" unit), therefore saving energy.
Our Boiler Installation Services
return air, or it can compare the enthalpy of the air, as is regularly performed in climates where humidity is more of a concern. In both cases, the outside air must be less energetic than the return air for the system to enter the economizer mode. Thermal Comfort Central, "all-air" air-conditioning systems (or bundle systems) with a combined outdoor condenser/evaporator unit are frequently set up in North American houses, offices, and public buildings, however are difficult to retrofit (install in a building that was not created to get it) due to the fact that of the large air ducts required.
Primary Principals of Latent Heat Issues
An alternative to packaged systems is making use of separate indoor and outside coils in split systems. Split systems are preferred and widely utilized worldwide except in North America. In The United States and Canada, divided systems are frequently seen in domestic applications, but they are gaining popularity in small industrial buildings.
The advantages of ductless a/c systems include simple installation, no ductwork, higher zonal control, versatility of control and quiet operation [21] In area conditioning, the duct losses can represent 30% of energy consumption [22] The use of minisplit can lead to energy cost savings in area conditioning as there are no losses associated with ducting.
Primary Principals of Latent Heat Issues
Indoor systems with directional vents mount onto walls, suspended from ceilings, or fit into the ceiling. Other indoor systems mount inside the ceiling cavity, so that short lengths of duct deal with air from the indoor unit to vents or diffusers around the spaces. Split systems are more effective and the footprint is typically smaller sized than the bundle systems.
Dehumidification (air drying) in an air conditioning system is provided by the evaporator. Considering that the evaporator operates at a temperature level listed below the humidity, wetness in the air condenses on the evaporator coil tubes. This wetness is collected at the bottom of the evaporator in a pan and removed by piping to a central drain or onto the ground exterior.
It is frequently used in basements which have a greater relative humidity since of their lower temperature (and propensity for damp floorings and walls). In food selling facilities, large open chiller cabinets are highly efficient at dehumidifying the internal air. Alternatively, a humidifier increases the humidity of a building. All modern-day air conditioning systems, even little window bundle systems, are geared up with internal air filters.
Our Process for Thermal Comfort
youtube
For example, a structure in a high dust environment, or a house with furry animals, will require to have the filters changed more typically than buildings without these dirt loads. Failure to change these filters as needed will contribute to a lower heat currency exchange rate, resulting in squandered energy, shortened devices life, and greater energy costs; low air flow can result in iced-over evaporator coils, which can completely stop air circulation.
Since an a/c moves heat in between the indoor coil and the outdoor coil, both must be kept tidy. This suggests that, in addition to changing the air filter at the evaporator coil, it is also needed to regularly clean up the condenser coil. Failure to keep the condenser tidy will eventually lead to damage to the compressor, since the condenser coil is accountable for discharging both the indoor heat (as gotten by the evaporator) and the heat created by the electrical motor driving the compressor.
Procedures for Gas Furnace And Burners
youtube
This was initially driven by increasing energy costs, and has actually more recently been driven by increased awareness of ecological problems. Additionally, enhancements to the HEATING AND COOLING system efficiency can also help increase resident health and efficiency. [23] In the United States, the EPA has imposed tighter limitations over the years. There are a number of approaches for making HVAC systems more efficient.
Our Gas Furnace And Burners Services
Today, required air systems can double for cooling and are more popular. Some advantages of forced air systems, which are now commonly used in churches, schools and high-end residences, are Much better a/c impacts Energy savings of as much as 15-20% Even conditioning [citation needed] A downside is the installation cost, which can be somewhat higher than conventional HEATING AND COOLING systems.
This permits a more granular application of heat, comparable to non-central heating systems. Zones are managed by numerous thermostats. In water heating unit the thermostats manage zone valves, and in forced air systems they control zone dampers inside the vents which selectively obstruct the flow of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heating,_ventilation,_and_air_conditioning air. In this case, the control system is really important to keeping a correct temperature.
Ground source, or geothermal, heat pumps resemble ordinary heatpump, but instead of moving heat to or from outside air, they count on the stable, even temperature of the earth to provide heating and a/c. Lots of areas experience seasonal temperature extremes, which would need large-capacity heating & cooling equipment to heat or cool buildings.
Convection Heating System: Its What We Do!
Heat Pumps And Furnace: Its What We Do!
A couple of feet listed below the earth's surface, nevertheless, the ground remains at a fairly continuous temperature. Using this big source of reasonably moderate temperature level earth, a heating or cooling system's capability can frequently be considerably lowered. Although ground temperatures differ according to latitude, at 6 feet (1.8 m) underground, temperature levels typically just variety from 45 to 75 ° F (7 to 24 ° C).

Park Farm Barn available for Christmas
Park Farm Barn has been one of our most popular holiday lets for Christmas and New Year. Until recently we were unable to offer it for hire due to renovations. The owner has now confirmed that the work is complete and we can start letting it out again. We apologise to everyone who has been forced to find somewhere else this Christmas.
Park Farm Barn is a 4-bed barn conversion in the heart of the North Norfolk countryside. Enjoy parkland views, easy access to the coast and a hot tub.

November 1, 2019
We’re in the last vibrant days of autumn on the North Country School campus, with the final leaves clinging to tree branches as the forecast predicts snow on the horizon. This week in our academic classes students have been getting some hands-on experience working in the chemistry lab and cooking up creative international dishes in our Teaching and Learning Kitchen, while over in the barnyard students have been getting in some time on horseback while the warm weather holds.
This week the NCS community also celebrated our annual festive Halloween celebration. Students and teachers spent the past several weeks painting decorations, assembling creative costumes, and planning a haunted house, and on Wednesday night everyone joined together to enjoy the fruits of their labor. With fall shortly coming to a close, we look forward to our Thanksgiving celebration and Family Weekend in November, followed by an exciting winter term full of cross-country skiing, ice skating, and weekly Whiteface Days at the local downhill ski mountain.
ACADEMICS
Our 7th grade science class has been exploring the scientific process through a series of labs involving physical properties. In this week’s lab activity students used beakers and burners to heat up various fats including lard, butter, and soap to determine their melting points. The groups recorded their data and used their findings to compare the physical properties of the different substances.
In a collaborative lesson between our math and woodshop programs, this week students in geometry class held a product development session looking at an in-progress project designed by student Sky. Sky, who is in both geometry and woodshop class, brought his partially-built bench to the math class, where his 8th-and 9th-grade peers examined the shape and angles of the project, analyzing the ergonomics of his design and suggesting possible improvements as he completes the construction of his design.
In the 9th grade Global Issues class, students have been examining the link between Chinese-American relations at a governmental level, and looking at the growth and decline of Chinese food restaurants in this country as that relationship evolves. After watching the documentary The Search For General Tso, which talks at length about this relationship, the class examined Chinese take-out menus from restaurants in India, Mexico, and Thailand, noting their differences as they relate to the concept of authenticity. To end this unit, the class relocated to our Teaching and Learning Kitchen for a fun and delicious exercise on food authenticity. General Dave's Chicken Project (named after Director of School Dave Steckler) tasked the class to create their own General Dave’s Chicken recipes—using campus maple syrup as an ingredient—bringing NCS culture into the discussion of what cultural fusion and adaptation can look (and taste) like.
ARTS
Halloween at North Country School is a festive event that brings together many long-held traditions for a day of fun and scary celebration. Each grade plays a different role in the activities. Our younger students carved pumpkins and painted the large-scale decorations that adorn the Main Building, while our older students designed and ran an activity-filled carnival and planned a scary haunted house experience for the rest of the student body.
Creative Halloween costumes are also a rich part of the NCS tradition, and a guideline of “80% creativity, 20% stuff” sets the tone for the community to think outside store-bought items as they prepare their original looks for the evening. Students spent the night as characters from Alice in Wonderland and The Incredibles, gumball machines, and scary nurses and zombies. Our farmers were a family of mice with Brownie the pony in tow as their cheese, and a group of our teachers did their best impressions of the Hogwarts faculty.
OUTDOORS
This past weekend saw our students traveling to nearby Burlington, Vermont, for an art adventure, as well as venturing into the Adirondack High Peaks for a burly overnight. On Meredith’s Saturday trip, students spent some time finding geocaches in downtown Burlington near Lake Champlain, then enjoyed an afternoon at the Fleming Museum of Art at the University of Vermont. The group, including students Olivia, Tristan, and Silvia, saw special exhibits of photos, prints, and paintings related to freedom, justice, and inclusion. They also toured the museum’s permanent collection of African, Native American, Asian, and European art, including a suit of samurai armor and an Egyptian mummy.
Teachers Melissa and Jack took a group of five students on a double-overnight adventure into the nearby Dix Mountain Range. The group, including students Emily, Cocona, Kentaro, Jessica, and Tianyu, camped at Round Pond, where they enjoyed beautiful sunrise vistas. Everyone worked together on the challenging fourteen-mile hike, offering to carry one another's gear if they were struggling, filtering water for the crew, and sharing encouraging words as they successfully summited Dix Mountain as a team.
FARM AND GARDEN
At North Country School our farm plays a role in many special events and traditions, and Halloween is no exception. For this year’s Halloween celebration, pumpkins grown on our farm adorned campus, and our youngest students helped carve up some Jack-o-lanterns for the festive holiday display.
This week barn manager Erica ran a horseback riding lesson with students Nate, Olivia, JT, and Helen. The group led Tucker the horse from the barn down to the riding ring, where Erica demonstrated how to work a horse on a lunge-line, and explained different footfall patterns and gaits as students watched Tucker at the walk, trot, and canter. After observing the rhythm and count of Tucker’s feet during those different speeds, each student had the opportunity to ride Tucker bareback, working on balance and body position as they traveled around the ring.
Check back next week to see what we’re up to on our mountain campus.
