Family: The Prosperous House of Burke
Reuben was born into the main line of the House of Burke. Although the Burke family is a member of the Sacred Twenty-Eight, it is considered inferior to other notorious pure-blood families -- the Malfoys, the Blacks -- due to acquiring its wealth as merchants and tradesmen.
Some years before Reuben's birth, a prophet spoke of a "lion" that would soon be born to the family and secure its future. When Reuben's mother became pregnant, the family believed this "lion" to be him. There was much celebration when he was born, and with the baby's light red hair and stark grey eyes, it seemed he would indeed galvanize the Burke's reputation.
As Reuben grew up, however, he failed to show any signs of magic. His hair darkened to a deep shade of brown and he became a somewhat anxious boy, unable to shoulder great expectations placed upon him by the family. When his eleventh birthday came around and his Hogwarts letter failed to arrive, the family finally declared him a squib and sent him away to live with faraway cousins. A year later, his mother gave birth to his brother, Vincent, who came out with bright blue eyes and flaming red locks that never darkened.
Adopted family: Primroses and the Rosebery
Cousin Clara had been politely distant to the family after a controversial courtship, but she had married well. Her muggle husband was Henry Primrose, younger brother to a Lord Primrose, Earl of Rosebery. They lived together (and happily, if rumors were to be believed) in a spacious country house not far from the Primrose estate. Their daughter, Alice Primrose, had also turned out to be a squib and was the same age as Reuben, so it was decided that he would go live with his noble cousins.
Cast out by his own mother and father, Reuben's anxiety quickly soured into sullen ambition. He liked his relatives well enough, especially Cousin Alice, who, while preparing to be presented to Society in two years, also exhibited a natural and refreshing curiosity of magic and the world; at the same time he felt sick with jealousy, for, as a commoner in the muggle world, he had no such Society to enter as an alternative to the wizarding world. Though without magic, he decided that there were still some things he could do. Squib or not, anyone could look into a telescope, and he was hell-bent to prove himself a capable astronomer to eventually stick it to the "lion" of the family.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fig.
Reuben loved Fig. How could he not? When the silver-haired old man knocked on the oaken door of the country house and stood awkwardly to be announced by the butler, then cleared his throat to tell Reuben (and Alice -- more on that elsewhere) that he was magical after all -- how could he not be overwhelmed by joy and gratitude? From then on, Fig would always be his mentor, friend, and the man who brought Reuben to the wizarding world. He would follow Fig anywhere.
(And he did, right up to the very end.)
Friends: Amit Thakkar, Garreth Weasley
Reuben's friendship with Amit was natural. Both were astronomy lovers, and they spent many a late nights in the freezing Astronomy Tower and weekends roaming the highlands looking for astronomy tables. Reuben was calm where Amit was nervous, and Amit did the talking when Reuben fell quiet. Professor Shah once called them her dynamic duo. The nickname stuck.
Reuben's friendship with Garreth Weasley was anything but natural. With his mane of red hair and his tendency to brag, Garreth at first reminded Reuben of the brother that replaced him, whom he had never met but frequently pictured in his mind. Garreth spoke loudly and proudly of himself and bothered and prodded Reuben when he wanted to be left alone and constantly got him in trouble, but Garreth, as Reuben began to realize, was probably nothing like his lion brother. Garreth spoke proudly of everyone. And Garreth prodded him into doing things he never would have done on his own. Thanks to Garreth's ingenious discovery of the passageway that led to Honeydukes, Reuben had a completely free (though unethical) supply of rare potion ingredients. That is not to say, however, that they never got caught. Once Garreth's kind but unsparing aunt had caught them padding into the Potions classroom past curfew, and another time she had found them stuck in the prefect bathroom after Peeves locked them in, and another time with dungbombs on the third floor suspiciously close to the gargoyle that led to the Headmaster's office... she once called them the partners in crime, and the nickname stuck.

Ancient Magic:
Ancient Magic was cold. It dripped into his bloodstream like glacial meltwater, that hollow feeling when the wind blew on the mountain and he hadn't worn enough layers. Then, when he released its power, it was nothing short of supernovae rebounding off of dying stars.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Quotes:
"I could have been a candle, but because you have neglected me I will grow into a wildfire."
"Amit, wake up. What do you see?"
"Millions of stars."
"And what does that mean to you?"
"The infinite grandeur of the universe, ever expanding --"
"No, you idiot, someone stole our tent."
"I may not be a lion, but I have talons too. They are as long and sharp as yours."
"Garreth, would you shut the fuck up?"
Thanks for reading!

Chapter 66: The Former Gaunt
The Sun, the Moon, and All Our Stars
Tumblr media
Summary and Details…
Previous Chapter Recap/Context: Emotionally exhausted, Sebastian returned home after his visit with Ominis in the Three Broomsticks, during which he learned how Anne had died - in a rather mundane manner that was unrelated to the curse she had suffered through as a child. The next morning, Kate tries her best to take care of Sebastian, cooking him a hearty breakfast. He tells her about all that Ominis had shared and then reveals he has invited him over for dinner that night. Although it is very last-minute and Kate has been taken by surprise, she agrees to host. She and Sebastian work all day to prepare the cottage and cook an impressive meal for Ominis while still finding time for some sweet moments and merriment.
Pairing: 25-year-old, post-Azkaban Sebastian Sallow x 24-year-old Kate Mayflower (my OC), the assistant librarian at Hogwarts
Content warnings: In general, this is rated 18+, so minors should not read or interact with this story. This chapter is pretty mild, but there's discussion of disowning a family member and general family trauma.
The full chapter is available below the cut; it can also be found on AO3 (link is posted below). Please leave some feedback if possible, especially if you like what you read! 🥰
Chapter 66: The Former Gaunt
“When my father found out that I was no longer living at Hogwarts, he was furious,” Ominis tells them as he spreads butter onto a slice of warm bread. “But I had already received permission from the Headmaster, and it would have been… humiliating for him to tell Black, one of his own friends, that I, his son, had not consulted him at all in the arrangement and that I was openly defying him.”
Kate nods, and Sebastian gives her a look before replying, “I see.” She realizes the mistake instantly - the blind man wouldn’t have a clue that she was responding in any way unless she spoke up.
“My parents couldn’t understand that I wanted to help Anne. They… have… an unusual set of values,” Ominis adds, to help Kate understand. “They felt there was no reason to do so, and that it actually was a tarnishing of the Gaunt name.”
“Why would it be considered…?” Kate trails off, bewildered. “How… cruel… and strange to chastise you for such a selfless act.”
“There is nothing selfless about my ‘family.’ I don’t even consider them family anymore, nor the other way around. They don’t help anyone out of the goodness of their hearts. They perform a favor only when there is some benefit to them - like having someone in their debt or gaining some type of prestige,” Ominis continues with his brows furrowed. “It didn’t matter how many times I explained how I owed it to Sebastian to help his sister.” He gestures to his old friend on the other side of the table. “To them, Sebastian was just… a criminal. They couldn’t understand.”
Kate glances Sebastian’s way, examining his face as he frowns deeply and begins to violently attack his steak.
“And when time passed and I had made up my mind that I would marry Anne, I kept it to myself for a long while.” Ominis takes a moment to take a sip of his cranberry currant seltzer water. “I knew I might require the Gaunt name to obtain a respectable job - one with flexible hours so that I could still tend to Anne as needed. I became an employee at Borgin and Burke’s after my father called in a favor to Caractacus Burke.”
Sebastian’s eyes snap up in recognition, and his eyes narrow. “You work at Borgin and Burke’s?”
Kate glances his way in confusion. “What exactly is Borgin and Burke’s?”
“It’s -” Sebastian begins confidently, then realizes how much it might give away about his post-Azkaban life and career and almost immediately shuts up. He pauses, making it sound as though he is unsure. “It’s a shop, isn’t it?”
Ominis takes a heaping spoonful of mashed potatoes and is silent for a long moment - a bit too long. He seems to choose his words carefully. “Yes, in Diagon Alley, a bit… off the beaten path. We purchase and sell magical items, specializing in powerful, rare, and ancient artifacts. There are many… curiosities in the shop. I’m a manager there now.” He smiles faintly. “I enjoy having priority over the customers whenever there’s a new item. Some are quite useful.”
Sebastian suddenly chokes on his seltzer water, and Kate covers for him. “We’ll have to pay the store a visit. I’m interested to see your wares.”
“Yes,” Sebastian adds after recovering. “In fact, we may have some items to sell.”
Surprised, Ominis considers this. “Do you now?”
“Well, we recently went on a camping trip. It was rather adventurous for me. We did some exploration and discovered a trove of unique treasures,” Kate explains.
“Certainly the shop owners would be delighted to assess them.” He dabs his mouth with a napkin. “Come by anytime. I often work weekdays. If I am there, I will ensure that you make a fair bargain.”
“Thank you,” she replies.
The trio pause to enjoy their dinner - pan-seared steak with a demi-glace, mashed potatoes, warm honey bread, and oven-roasted vegetables fresh from Kate’s garden.
“This is delicious. Everything is seasoned perfectly,” Ominis remarks. “You’re a talented cook, Kate. I truly appreciate the effort.”
“Thank you.” Kate beams. “Sebastian did help quite a bit, too.”
Her boyfriend smiles in response, squeezing her hand.
“If I may,” Sebastian begins, “Dare I ask how your family responded when you married Anne? Did you receive their blessing? I can’t imagine it… went well, knowing the Gaunts.”
His friend scoffs. “My mother was apparently trying to arrange an advantageous marriage for me at the time without my knowledge. Anne and I certainly did not receive their blessing. I knew they’d never grant it. We wed in secret,” Ominis replies. “They would have resorted to… drastic measures had they known in advance. After the fact, I informed them of our marriage and announced that I had changed my name for Anne. They handled their anger with me discreetly, trying to not cause a fuss or fuel gossip amongst the pureblood community. If it were announced to the public that their weak, disappointing, disabled, black sheep of a son had married the chronically ill and uneducated sister of a known criminal, it would have been shameful to the family.” He cringes. “They are… infinitely judgmental.”
A scowl overtaking his face, Sebastian sees red.
“Sebastian…” Kate warns as quietly as she can, gently touching her boyfriend’s arm.
“You know I didn’t look at Anne or you that way,” Ominis quickly mentions, picking up on Kate’s tone. “My parents didn’t officially remove me from the family tree, but I am essentially dead to them. They don’t need me… or want me anyway. I have two older brothers, married with children. There are plenty of Gaunt heirs.” He pauses, smirking a little. “But… you know, there are times during which the Gaunt family name is still useful to me. I am able to enjoy the reputation of my former name without having to actually associate with them.”
“You were never one of them,” Sebastian murmurs. “You were meant to be part of the Sallow family, Ominis.”
Ominis appears pensive, smiling faintly. “My fondest childhood memories were… always with you and Anne. In Hogwarts and in Feldcroft.” He takes a bite of steak, then speaks directly to Kate. “As abusive as Solomon was towards Sebastian, even he was far more kind than my own family members.”
“I’m sorry to hear that,” she replies. “I can’t imagine growing up in either of your circumstances.”
“Did you have any family trauma?” Ominis asks incredulously with a laugh.
A lopsided smile tugs at Kate’s lips as she shakes her head. “No. No trauma.”
After the meal, Kate ushers Omins and Sebastian into the living room. She delivers two steaming cups of tea and kisses Sebastian’s cheek. She thanks her boyfriend’s old friend for the considerate gift of chocolate truffles, then disappears back into the kitchen to clean up.
“She’s lovely,” Ominis murmurs. “Truly.”
“I’m still astounded every day that she chose me,” Sebastian remarks. “She’s the kindest woman I’ve ever met. She’s patient beyond belief. Intelligent and loyal with a great sense of humor. Beautiful inside and out. I wish you could see her - our cottage - it’s really something.”
“I can tell it’s very much a home,” Ominis muses. “It’s warm and comfortable here. And it smells like… a greenhouse and a bakery all at once.”
Sebastian laughs. “An apt description. There are plants everywhere. She loves them. Her father is deeply interested in horticulture, and clearly, that passed on to her.”
“Pureblood?”
“Yes,” Sebastian answers.
“I’m not familiar with her family name,” the blonde man notes. “But judging by her nature, it isn’t surprising my family didn’t associate with hers.”
“I don’t know them - not yet, but I agree with you. She grew up very comfortable and loved,” Sebastian notes. “Not at all the way we were raised.”
“You haven’t met them?”
The sound of dishes being stacked comes from the kitchen. Sebastian wandlessly turns on the gramophone. A Frederic Chopin song begins to play.
He sighs, speaking very low. “No… not yet. She… hasn’t really even told them much about me. I’ve got to be honest - I’m rather nervous. I think when they find out who I am… where I’ve been… they won’t approve. I hate to put her through that pain.”
Ominis hums in response. “If it’s meant to be, you’ll both weather it…”
“It is,” Sebastian replies quickly. “But… I’m certainly not the kind of man they would want their daughter to marry.”
Ominis picks up his teacup again. “Hmm… sounds like a challenge. Are you… not up to it? The Sebastian Sallow I once knew would have stopped at nothing to get what he wanted.”
Sebastian huffs. “I wouldn’t say I am less determined, but I…” the chestnut-haired man explains, “...I just want to do things right. There are boundaries I will never cross again. I’ve learned a great deal since… well, since… you know what.”
His friend nods in understanding.
Both of them sit quietly, sipping their tea and listening to the music.
“Sebastian,” Ominis finally says with some hesitation, “There is something I need to tell you.”

Weekend With The Grays 2023 Day 2 Prompt - Welcome Ball III
Tumblr media
Once again, thanks, @endlessly-cursed for a fantastic event! Prim belongs to her. I also have mentions of Malcolm by @gaygryffindorgal and Roxie by @mjs-oc-corner, who also owns Bella, Danny's ship partner. This short piece of content reveals a brief fashion emergency the couple has before the third Welcome Ball that becomes a funny story for later.
On the day before the Welcome Ball, Danny and Bella spent the hour before the 6 PM deadline re-exploring the spacious expanse of Winbourne. They found their usual guest room in the course of that. An attendant had been there to receive Danny's broom and the couple's rucksacks when they first landed down near the gates. Their belongings were left where they'd be staying during the solstice celebrations.
Warm laughter and mingling took place that night and the morning before the ball. Friends took the time to catch up with each other and reminisce about the passing year. One friend in particular Danny and Bella hung out with was Roxie, a fellow auror-in-training of his. It was in part due to Roxie’s camaraderie and friendship that made the intense regimen a small part easier for her and Danny. She was best friends with him and even helped foster his romantic relationship with Bella. The former Ravenclaws were like siblings and were inseparable in their bond.
However, a small rush of panic took place for Danny and Bella before the ball. The necklace for her dress was missing before Lady Primrose and Lord Malcolm were to assemble everyone together in the hall.
She realized she had forgotten her necklace. Bella felt around for it and wasn't wearing it.
“Where did my necklace go, love? I had it when I showed it to Prim a few minutes ago.”
“I mean, we can wait until after the ball to find it.” offered Danny.
Bella immediately started for the small seating area where they chatted with Prim. It was adjacent to the dance floor. “Not that, I'd rather have it now so I don't have to worry later.”
He caught up to her. “Relax.” He checked his pocket watch. “Still five minutes until the ball starts. Let's relax, not get hasty. Can you remember where we sat.”
Bella took a deep breath. Alright, okay. Prim… was in the armchair there. We were on the sofa to the left.” Danny pointed to it. “So that's where you think the necklace should be?”
“Yes.” confirmed Bella. “I know Prim couldn’t have saw it because she left right after giving it back to me.”
They approached their sofa. There was no necklace, but Danny had a hunch.
“This is silly, but I think it sunk into the sofa. We should look between the cushions.”
“It's on me, Danny. I heard the announcement for everyone to gather on the dance floor and got up right away without a second. I never thought to look.
He sent her a reassuring smile before they started digging in the couch. “All's well once we find it.”
Within a few seconds, Danny felt the neck loop and Bella’s hand! They looked up at each other with wide eyes. Both uttered “wa-lah!” They pulled it up together. It flew out of their grip into the hair and into her cupped hands.
She looked at her love and giggled. “Now that's a new meaning to we found it together.”
Danny grinned. “Bravo, Bella. I'm glad for two, that's us.”
She was adamant now to get back to the dance floor. “That’s enough, silly Danny.” she joked as she ran her arm through his and motioned forward with him. “We got a short window, Let’s leg it back now, love.
After the Welcome Ball commenced, the couple expressed relief at their quick save.
“I dunno,  I would've probably ransacked the chairs and sofa if you hadn't helped me, Danny. Prim wouldn't-
“Worry not.” he finished. “I'm just happy we got your necklace back. You're splendid with it.”
Bella put her hand on her partner’s shoulder and remarked “Thank you, Danny. It's a special one-of-a-kind. Honestly I wouldn't know I'd react if it was truly lost.”
“You're quite welcome. Of course, you got to think differently when the belonging can't exactly be replaced.” he replied.
“I'm glad you understand. Now enough worrying about the past. Let's see what you got this great night.”
Danny reached his hand to Bella’s shoulder, and they began their dance moves. With nothing else clouding their thoughts, they took in the sight of seeing each other's beautiful face. No matter where and how fast they twirled, the blur was at bay, and the sights between them were clear. In a grand collage of music, sweet swaying souls in the arms of the festive hearth, Danny and Bella were at peace.

The Beginning of a Symphony - Chapter 36
Tumblr media
A/N: the night of the ball has finally arrived, and Ophelia is determined to make the most of this opportunity.
Warnings: Ophelia’s usual antics, plus fake-dating trope gone wrong.
OCs featured/mentioned: Carolyn Nyberg, Selene Fraser, Alan the ferret and Henry Lovecraft @lifeofkaze, Bradford Pendleton, Ivy Anders, Oliver Gerard and Eliot Gerard @kc-and-co, Adelia Selwyn @thatravenpuffwitch, Marigold Sterling and Cledwyn Ironwood @that-scouse-wizard, Victoria Summer @whatwouldvalerydo, Primrose Gray @endlessly-cursed, William Devlin and Maxwell Pembroke @unfortunate-arrow, Lydia Ellis @mjs-oc-corner
Tumblr media
May 1897
The night of the Celestial Ball had arrived at last, and it was everything Ophelia had dreamed it would be. The Great Hall had been transformed into a grand ballroom, with the tables vanished to make enough space for people to dance, and a large obelisk in the very middle. Even the enchanted ceiling appeared more star-filled than usual, as if the very sky knew that this night was going to be one where something magical might happen.
Ophelia observed the scene from one of the seats that lined the walls of the Great Hall. Carolyn, Adelia, and Marigold were all on the dancefloor; Caro with Bradford Pendleton, Adelia with Teddy Ellison, and Marigold with Lydia Ellis. All three of them looked beautiful in their dress robes, and were the very pictures of poise and grace as they danced with their suitors.
The Slytherins were not the only ones who were looking and dancing exquisitely. Hufflepuff’s Ivy Anders flashed Ophelia a wide and friendly smile as she paraded past on the arm of Maxwell Pembroke, while Gryffindor’s Oliver Gerard and Victoria Summer appeared to be saving their smiles for each other. Primrose Grey from Ravenclaw was among the best dressed, smiling as she danced with her fiancé William Devlin. Ophelia felt a pang of jealousy. It was not fair, really. Primrose’s parents had picked out a wealthy suitor for her as a child, and she did not even need one. She clearly had enough money for pretty dresses and dance lessons without one.
As for Ophelia herself, she had managed to magically alter the dress her mother had bought her for birthday so it looked brand new and far fancier and more fashionable than it was in reality. She had arranged her newly blonde hair very prettily and applied a subtle amount of Marigold’s rouge to her cheeks in order to accentuate her newly green eyes. But as of yet, no one had asked her to dance with them.
It was peculiar; she looked as close to being beautiful as she ever would, and the stage had been set perfectly for her to showcase that, but somehow, she still found herself waiting in the wings. She had so many potential leading men, but she had yet to become a leading lady. Sitting to the side of the dance floor next to the wall, she may not have even been part of the ensemble. No, she was merely a piece of the scenery.
She was trying to act as if nothing was vexing her - after all, no gentleman would want to dance with a lady who did not smile nicely - but she was finding it increasingly difficult to not show how disappointed she was by this turn of events. Still, she was able to force a smile as Carolyn approached her, Bradford at her side, the two of them having retired from the dancefloor.
“Ophelia, are you not dancing?” Caro asked her, and Ophelia shook her head. “Why, has no one yet asked you?”
“No, sadly not.”
“Now, that simply will not do. You must have a dance,” said Brady. Ophelia looked at him hopefully, but his eyes had started to scan the dancefloor. “I’m certain that we can find someone to dance with you. Let’s see… Ah, just the person. Jim, old bean!”
At the sound of his name being called out, Jim Hexley walked towards the group. When he reached them, Brady etched around to clap him on the back.
“Jim, my friend, we have a young lady who wishes to dance and has no partner to dance with, and I see that you appear to have misplaced your dance partner.”
“Oh, well, I… I have not misplaced her. That is to say, I am quite certain of where she is. Over there, look.” Jim pointed in the direction of the refreshment table, where his twin sister Ethel was drinking pumpkinade with her own dance partner, Cledwyn Ironwood. On her other side, Selene Fraser was intently listening to something that Eliot Gerard was telling her.
“I take no joy in being the man to deliver this news to you, old chap, but it would appear that there are three of you in this partnership.”
“Yes, but then that… that has been the case since the beginning of the evening.”
As Jim spoke, the small, minky-furred body of a ferret climbed up over Selene’s shoulder and came to rest there, a small bow tie tied around its neck. Brady guffawed, Jim chuckled, and even Carolyn’s lips twitched a little.
“So, what do you say, Jim?” Brady asked, once he had finished laughing. “Fancy a turn about the room with Miss Burke here?”
Jim cleared his throat before nodding his head. “Uh, yes. Of course. It would be my pleasure. An honour. I… Ophelia, would you like to dance?”
Ophelia considered the offer. Jim Hexley was not the sort of wizard she had hoped to dance with. He was a decent enough fellow, but not at all wealthy. Still, one had to start somewhere, and everyone knew that a gentleman showing interest in a woman was sure to garner the interest of other men. So, she took Jim’s proffered hand and accompanied him to the dancefloor, where the couples had just begun to dance along to the polka music being played by an unmanned orchestra.
“I am afraid that I… I am not the best dancer,” Jim apologised. “Ethel and Selene did teach me - or attempted to teach me, I should say - but their efforts, I fear, have been in vain.”
“Do you think that is why Miss Fraser has set her sights on Eliot Gerard?” Ophelia asked. Jim shook his head. His face looked somewhat saddened. “Are you upset by this snub?”
“No. Not at all,” Jim almost smiled. “Selene and I are just friends. Perhaps more like family, with how close she and my sister are.”
“Then why do you seem downhearted?”
“It is nothing. I mean, I am not. I… Well, I had wished to accompany someone else tonight. I am sorry.”
“That is very well. I had wished to accompany someone else, as well.”
“Really? Who?”
“No one in particular. Just someone of status.”
“I see,” Jim nodded slowly, frowning. “I feel that I must be a disappointment.”
“It is better than dancing with no one at all, is it not?” Ophelia asked him.
“I am not certain that I agree. I… It seems to me that the more dances one has with others, the more one misses the company of the one they truly wish to dance with.”
“Well, maybe if the one you wish to dance with sees you dancing with another, she will find herself wishing that it was her you were dancing with and miss you in return.”
Jim looked thoughtful. “That is what my sister said. But so far, Héloïse has barely looked at me.”
“Does she know that you and Selene are only friends, and that Selene has also been accompanied by her ferret?”
“I… I do believe that she does.”
“Then perhaps this is why your sister’s plan has not worked. Say, I have an idea,” said Ophelia, suddenly feeling hopeful again. “A ruse, one which will allow us to help one another. If we each appear to be enjoying the other’s company as we dance, then other wizards shall wish to dance with me, and… Héloïse, did you say? Perhaps Héloïse will take notice of you at last. What say you?”
“It is as good a plan as any, I suppose,” Jim sighed. “How… How should I act towards you.”
“You may start by smiling,” Ophelia told him, and Jim laughed quietly to himself. “See? You are doing quite well already.”
They smiled at one another as they danced, barely talking. Jim did not seem to want to talk much, seeming to be too preoccupied with counting his steps to attempt to hold a conversation. Eventually, though, he asked her:
“Is it working? The ruse?”
“I think it is, yes,” Ophelia said. She looked around her at the boys at the edges of the hall. Several were looking at her, including Henry Lovecraft, who was watching the scene with the little dark-haired, dark-eyed girl at his side. “Héloïse is looking at us.”
“She is?” Jim’s eyes brightened. He cleared his throat. “Is she… What is she doing?”
“At present she is talking with Henry Lovecraft.”
“Ah.”
“He is putting an arm around her shoulders.”
“Oh.”
“I do believe that he is attempting to comfort her,” Ophelia informed Jim, watching as Héloïse took a deep breath and blinked rapidly. “Yes, she looks quite upset.”
“What? Is she-”
“No, don’t look, you’ll ruin the ruse,” said Ophelia. “It is working, is it not?” Jim nodded, but he looked doubtful. Ophelia turned her attention back to Héloïse and Henry Lovecraft. “She is sad, but Henry is saying something to her. She is shaking her head, and has stepped away from him.”
“She has?”
“Yes, but he’s taken hold of her hand. Oh, but she’s taken her hand back. She’s taken another step away from him. She… Oh.”
“What?” Jim asked urgently. “What is she doing?”
“I do not know,” said Ophelia. “She has left. She ran that way.” She pointed in the direction of the main doors out of the hall, and Jim turned his head to look, his lips parting and his arms falling to his sides. Ophelia sighed. “You should go after her.”
“Are you… You do not mind my leaving?”
“Of course not. The ruse has served its purpose.”
Jim bowed his head to her, and she curtsied back. And with that they parted ways, their ruse over. And it had worked. For as Jim rushed out of the Great Hall, Ophelia returned to her seat by the wall with more eyes on her than ever, knowing fully well that this time, she would not remain a wallflower for long.

Weekend With the Grays, The Winter Solstice
event hosted by @endlessly-cursed
Tumblr media
4th of December- Back at Winbourne
Primrose Gray belongs to @endlessly-cursed
Malcolm Stolberg-Burke belongs to @gaygryffindorgal
(Note: I decided to make Cordelia the same age as Primrose for this, since I think it's easier for me to work with!)
Cordelia had never been to a grander house than Winbourne. She took in the beautiful gardens and ornate architecture as she joined the queue to greet the host and hostess. She felt rather overwhelmed, as she came face to face with Primrose Gray. Sure, she had gone to Hogwarts with her, but they hadn't been all that close, being in different houses and running in different circles, too. The company Cordelia usually kept was not made of lords and ladies, but she couldn't deny that that was exactly what she had been aiming towards all her life.
"Lady Gray," she greeted the lady of the house when her turn came and then: "Lord Stolberg-Burke. Thank you for your kind invitation."
"Miss Duncan, welcome to Winbourne," Primrose said with a beautiful and dazzling smile. To Cordelia, she felt regal, as did her tall, handsome husband Lord Malcolm Stolberg-Burke.
"Welcome," said Lord Stolberg-Burke, echoing Primrose's words.
Greetings exchanged, it was time to move along, and Cordelia was searching the crowd for familiar faces...

Sebastian: And how exactly do you expect to defeat Ranrok?
Ominis: Yes, do tell.
MC: Dude, he's like 2'ft tall.
Sebastian: Yeah? He's also got an immense set of powers.
MC: And? So do I bitch.
*MC finds Ranrok*
Ranrok: Oh, look it's the child.
MC: Shut the hell up!! *Punts him like a football*
Ranrok: *high-pitched screeching as he soars through the air*
*MC goes back to Sebastian and Ominis*
MC: I've defeated Ranrok.

Hey guys! I'm so sorry I've been lagging BIG TIME on Tumblr recently. I've been dealing with bad depression, working full time, and going through medical problems regarding carcinoma (which is a form of cancer) BUT! everything came back normal, so YAY! My doctor is also watching me for glaucoma which runs in my family. Glaucoma causes permanent blindness over time that can't be surgically fixed. So, yeah...that hurt me deeply as an artist, writer and avid gamer. Apologies to you all for not posting, but I figured I'd bless you all with this lovely "whatever the hell this is" Also! It's my birthday tomorrow, so I'll be hella busy! Thank you all for supporting me and sticking through the MIA profile. Love you all! xoxo, Si. 🐍✨💚

Chapter 72: Dresses and Daggers
The Sun, the Moon, and All Our Stars
Tumblr media
Summary and Details…
Previous Chapter Recap/Context: Kate's best friend, Pearl Abbott, has recently gotten engaged. In this chapter, the two of them go wedding dress shopping in Diagon Alley. While there, Kate takes a calculated risk by visiting Borgin and Burke's. Under the guise of selling a magical artifact, her true intention is to have a private conversation with Ominis. Sebastian had finally reunited with him for the first time in about a decade, only for Ominis to reveal the truth - he and Ruby were, regretfully, the reason he ended up in Azkaban - and promptly, the two of them became estranged once more.
Pairing: 25-year-old, post-Azkaban Sebastian Sallow x 24-year-old Kate Mayflower (my OC), the assistant librarian at Hogwarts
Content warnings: In general, this story is rated 18+, so minors should not read or interact with this story. This chapter features a bit of meddling, attempting to salvage a relationship, and brief mentions of smut (oral sex - female receiving and spooning sex).
The full chapter is available below the cut; it can also be found on AO3 (link is posted below). I truly appreciate any feedback.
Chapter 72: Dresses and Daggers
The shop bell tinkles as Kate and Pearl exit Gramercy’s Gramophones. Kate clutches the new record to her chest, smiling excitedly. Sebastian will be so thrilled to listen to the collection of Beethoven’s most famous songs, and she can hardly manage her excitement. She retrieves her extendable bag from her pocket, adding the disc to the other items she has purchased from stores in Diagon Alley, all for Sebastian - a package of sweets from Herbert’s Sherbets, a pair of Quidditch gloves and a broom servicing kit from Quality Quidditch Supplies, and a few new books - a murder mystery, one about the history of wandmaking, and another about magical governments around the world.
Pearl hadn’t uttered a word about the large quantity of Wiggenweld potion Kate had also bought from Culpepper Drugs and Preparations, and for that, she was thankful, as the reason for the purchase was private and a bit embarrassing.
Speaking of a need for Wiggenweld, Sebastian had been in such a good mood the previous night. They had sat together, reading, and stopped for a fun conversation about some of their Hogwarts memories. He even put down his book, the one he had been engrossed in for hours - The Theory of Time, a title she had never heard of but he swore was fascinating. He had asked her to tell him all about her time at school and seemed particularly interested in the events of her third and fourth year. Experiencing an accident in Potions class that had caused a severe burn to her left hand; failing a lesson on Boggarts and needing extra tutoring with Professor Hecat; all of the silly pranks she had pulled with her friends; helping Professor Garlick with some extra work in the greenhouses; forming a friendship with house-elf named Feenky who taught her many cooking enchantments in the kitchens; a family trip to the seaside in the summer; and of course, meeting her first boyfriend - a shy, dark-haired Gryffindor boy who would write her love poems. Kate was flattered by Sebastian’s keen interest in her life and relished in giving him all of the little details he requested. In return, she pried out details about Sebastian’s various crushes and casual romantic entanglements from his years at school.
This dialogue had led her to ask more about his friendships. Knowing she was moving in on dangerous territory, she tiptoed as much as she could around the matter, but eventually, Ominis came up.
“Sebastian,” Kate had began quietly, “Have you given more thought to… to Ominis?”
“I don’t want to,” he replied shortly. “There’s no need.”
“But… Sebastian, he’s… your brother. And it doesn’t sound like he and Ruby ever intended for you to be thrown into Az-”
“I don’t want to think about him,” he said with finality. “I’m not going to reach out to him.”
Kate had opened her mouth to push him further but changed her mind quickly with his sharp tone.
Instead, she invited Sebastian to sit on the floor between her legs. She wove her fingers into his thick chestnut curls, massaging his scalp as he sighed in pleasure. Soon enough, she was the one sighing in pleasure as her boyfriend had turned around, kissing his way up and down her thighs, his tongue exploring her cunt as she threw her head back in delight. The night had ended with them spooning, his cock buried inside of her as he moved languidly, whispering words of love, of worship, of eternity. He told her he would love her no matter where time brought them, no matter what. They slept well, satisfied and spent. With Sebastian, Kate had never felt so secure in her entire life.
Pearl and Kate turn, strolling down the street towards their main destination - Gaberlunzie Garments, or more specifically, the smaller shop upstairs - Shrew and Scold’s Bridal Wear.
As it comes into view, Kate grabs Pearl’s hand. “Well, are you ready? It’s an important day!”
Pearl chuckles, tucking a strand of her white-blonde hair behind her ear. “Yes, I am. And I’m so glad you’re here with me, Kate.”
Opening the door and marching upstairs, they are greeted by a witch who verifies their appointment and leads them into a room filled with rack after rack of wedding dresses. It’s a sea of white satin, lace, and tulle, with an occasional pastel pink, gold, and cream sprinkled about. Kate follows the two, allowing herself to touch and examine the dresses.
What might she wear someday?
White - white for sure. A long gown with flowers in her hair and perhaps a veil. Perhaps gold accents and jewelry…
Eventually, Kate is led to a comfortable leather armchair outside of the dressing chamber, where she waits for Pearl to emerge. And when she does, Kate gasps.
“Oh, Pearl!” Kate exclaims. “You- you look beautiful! Absolutely stunning!”
Pearl’s alabaster skin turns a bit pink as she twirls about. “Thanks… I like it, but I don’t think it’s quite what I’m looking for. It feels too old-fashioned.”
The tailor nods, guiding her back into the dressing area.
The next dress is hideous, and Kate has to try her best to keep her face neutral before hearing Pearl’s opinion.
“It’s scratchy - not comfortable at all. And it’s far too lacy for me,” she tells the shopkeeper.
Two dresses later, Kate begins to picture what she might like in a bridal gown design and how Sebastian might view her as she walks down the aisle. Kate, unlike Pearl, adores lace, and she can see herself in a dress with floral accents. It would be rather symbolic to look like a princess, considering her past life as Queen Eilionoir…
She can hear squeals of excitement behind the door, and when Pearl emerges, it’s written all over her face - this is her bridal gown. Kate grins, taking in every little detail. The dress has a high neckline, a full and blousy bodice, and a ruffled skirt with a long train.
“Do you like it?” Pearl asks eagerly.
Kate stands immediately, taking Pearl’s hands. “It’s perfect. Absolutely perfect. You are going to be the most gorgeous bride that ever lived.”
Pearl smiles with tears in her eyes. “Thank you. Someday, you’ll be a beautiful bride, too. And I can’t imagine your time will be far off.” She steps back. “We’ll be back before a year passes.”
The tailor suggests that she should look at accessories - necklaces, veils, hats, parasols, slippers - a full bridal trousseau. But before Pearl is swept into another room, she halts.
“Kate, why don’t you try on something, too? Just to… get ideas…” she suggests merrily.
Another store employee invites Kate back into the room filled with bridal gowns.
“To be upfront, I’m not engaged,” Kate informs the woman. “I’m not ready to purchase anything. I’ll humor Pearl with one dress.”
Ten minutes later, the dress has been buttoned up, and Kate steps up to the golden, ornate mirror, examining herself with wide eyes. The employee places a long veil over her hair. Seeing herself in a wedding gown takes her breath away, and her heart thumps.
“It’s lovely,” the employee murmurs. “Perhaps you’ll be back in the shop soon enough.”
Kate exhales. “Perhaps,” she echoes, turning around to view different angles. “Who knows?” She sighs.
After modeling the dress for Pearl, she patiently stands still so that the shopkeeper can unfasten all of the delicate buttons. She considers the idea further. Might she become a married woman before her 25th birthday? Her entire body grows warm with the thought, and she smiles to herself like a lovesick fool.
Their future might yet be unknown, but she is certain it will be bright and filled with joy. It has to be.
An hour later, Kate says farewell to Pearl and hesitates.
Still in Diagon Alley, she stands still in the middle of the street as people hurry past. She has just passed by Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlor, and all she has to do now is turn left and she’d enter Knockturn Alley for the first time.
If she crosses onto that street, she crosses a boundary. And there’s no telling what the result might be if she breaks past that invisible borderline.
It’s a risk. But it’s a calculated one, and she has a decent excuse in case it goes south.
Taking a deep breath, she steels herself and marches towards Borgin and Burke’s.
She finds it easily, with windows trimmed in green amidst a brick building. Before she can lose her nerve, she enters the shop.
Her eyes adjust to the dim light of the rather large shop, noting that she is completely alone. When she sees the wares for sale, she inhales sharply. Terrifying masks are hung on the walls and human skulls and various bones belonging to both humans and beasts line the shelves to her left. There appear to be a large assortment of potions in bottles of all shapes, colors, and sizes in a locked display case. To the right, the shelves are filled to the brim with a wide variety of objects - weapons, jewelry, goblets, antique books, cages for dangerous creatures, and more. A sign is displayed amidst the items warning customers, “DO NOT TOUCH! Ask a store employee for assistance.” Though there is a large, roaring fireplace in the back of the store, Kate shivers. There’s something about this place - and it isn’t just the clearly dangerous items - that seems to amplify every bit of anxiety she has ever felt.
The wooden door leading towards the storage room in back opens, and a blonde man emerges, carrying a large box. He sets it on the table with a thump and calls out, “Welcome to Borgin and Burke’s, and thank you for your patience. May I help you?”
He draws his long ebony wand from his pocket, and it blinks red as he slides the box towards the right side of the counter. His unseeing blue eyes move about, and his eyebrows knit in confusion at the customer’s silence. “How may I assist you today?”
Kate holds back, wondering if she should flee without saying a word. Ominis would never know it was her.
But if she left now, Sebastian might never rekindle their fragile relationship. And Kate can’t bear to stand by and let their friendship - their brotherhood - disappear. She has to try for his sake. For Sebastian’s future.
“Good afternoon,” she murmurs.
Ominis’ head tilts slightly, and he fidgets, adjusting his deep purple vest. He’s impeccably dressed, his suit, cape, and bow tie tailored just to him in the most up to date fashion. “Kate? Kate Mayflower?” he asks timidly.
She takes a few steps forward. “Yes. It’s me.”
“What are you doing here?” he inquires, confused.
“Erm…” She opens her extendable bag, rummaging around frantically. “I have an item to sell. I understand this shop appraises and purchases rare and ancient magical artifacts…?”
Ominis nods. “Yes… I can help you.”
There’s silence as Kate continues to fumble. Finally, she recovers the item, and she slowly and carefully places it on the counter.
“It’s a dagger that Sebastian and I found on an expedition to the ruins of an ancient castle in the Highlands,” she explains to the unseeing man.
The blonde man subtly tenses upon hearing her boyfriend’s name, but he regains his composure quickly. “Tell me more.”
“Its handle is set in silver. There are tiny rubies and emeralds inlaid to form what looks like three red roses,” Kate tells him in a measured, even tone. “Its sheath appears to be made of genuine green dragonhide.” She pulls the dagger out of its scabbard, and the blade shines as though it had been polished meticulously. “It seems as though it could do some damage; however, it is more decorative in nature, like an item given to a king just for show.”
She observes, fascinated, as Ominis picks it up to examine it in detail. His right hand glides over every centimeter, and he is clearly using his wand to make out its shape.
“The shop owners will be interested,” he tells her after a minute. “And I’ll ensure you receive a fair appraisal.”
“Thank you,” she murmurs. It is awkwardly quiet for a few moments.
“Is this really why you came here?” Ominis finally asks. “Or is there something more?”
“I… I was hoping to speak with you privately,” she replies nervously.
“Ah. Well… I am due for a break, coincidentally,” he notes. “There’s an excellent tea shop down the street called Rosa Lee. We could talk there while Mr. Burke assesses the dagger. Otherwise, we can chat here, if you would prefer…”
“Tea sounds lovely.”
The two of them share inconsequential small talk on the walk to Rosa Lee. They are served with steaming cups almost immediately, along with delicate petit fours.
Discussion about the weather dies down, and Kate gives an uncomfortable, half-hearted chuckle to break the silence. Ominis, seated with perfect posture, brings his teacup to his lips.
“What is it you wished to speak about?” he finally inquires after a moment.
“It’s… Sebastian,” she murmurs. “He doesn’t know I’m here, and I’d like to keep this rendezvous secret. I… Honestly, I’m worried about him. He… I can’t…” She struggles to find the right words.
“Please, take your time.”
Kate sighs and is silent for a while. “I want to start off by telling you how truly sorry I am about Anne. What happened to her… it isn’t fair.” She notices that he freezes momentarily at the mention of her name. “And although I would not have done the same, I can understand what you and Ruby were thinking at the time of Sebastian’s incarceration. I believe it when you say you had no idea that Azkaban would be the result.” She takes a sip of her tea and pauses. “Sebastian means so much to me, and he always will. I would do just about anything to help him and make him happy. And… that’s why I’m here.” Ominis’ expression is thoughtful in response. “I know it’s impossible to take back the past, but… I’m hoping that you can still be a part of Sebastian’s future. He’s very upset, Ominis… I’m afraid that he may not seek out your company on his own. He needs to be pushed.”
“If he doesn’t want to see me, that is his choice,” Ominis replies. “Why are you telling me this?”
“Because you’re brothers, Ominis,” Kate insists. “Please, don’t give up on him. He needs you, even though he will not admit it. Please… write to him. Try to meet him again. Don’t forsake this relationship. Do what you must.”
Ominis frowns, contemplative.
Kate says with finality, “If you won’t do it for me… or for Sebastian… then, Ominis, for Merlin’s sake, do it for Anne.”

A Bittersweet Summer
August's entry for @hp-12monthsofmagic School's out for Summer
A/N: Guess what, guys?! This story is about my boy Albert, whom I suddenly remembered just as I saw the topic for this month. And let me just say... prepare for tears because this one is a tragic story. Haha... I just like torturing my characters with trauma, don't I? Also sorry for the late entry, I had exams going on and a really bad writer's block😅😅
Warnings: grief, (keep tissues ready), Death, horse riding accident.
Summary: The summer after Albert's first year at Hogwarts starts wonderfully. That is until it ends with the worst tragedy.
The streets of Hampshire were bustling with life as people were busy purchasing and selling goods in the local shops of the market. Alongside the many sellers and buyers, pedestrians and domestic animals trampled on the earthen streets. Suddenly, amidst the thicket of people, an azure and bronze carriage rushed through the streets, pulled by two tawny horses. People turned their heads briefly to acknowledge its passing but quickly returned to bargaining the price of their groceries, unbothered by it.
Inside the carriage, a young boy of twelve was sitting beside the window, smiling widely as he observed the countryside rushing past. His heart fluttered in his chest with giddy excitement, a most unfamiliar feeling in his life. But nonetheless, he was excited to reach his family's home, one he had dearly missed for the past ten months of school.
A few minutes down the bumpy road, The carriage entered past the gates of a grand estate, The Wyevernbush Estate. The horses stopped past the fountain, where the footman got down from behind the carriage and opened the door for the young lord to get down. He placed a stepping stool for Albert, who wasn't tall enough to reach the ground. Just as he got down, he heard someone happily shout, "Albert!".
He craned his neck to look behind the fountain, where he found a rosy-cheeked boy smiling with glee and running towards him. The young boy's antics had a tall bearded man and raven-haired woman laughing as they followed closely behind him. The young lad hugged Albert as tightly as possible, squeezing out most of the air in his chest. Nevertheless, Albert hugged him tightly, having missed his little brother, Edward.
"How was your new school!? You must recount all of your adventures to us in great detail!" Edward squealed excitedly, making his parents, William and Elisabeth, smile fondly at the two boys.
"Now, Eddie, let your brother relax a bit. He's had a long journey back from his school," Elisabeth scolded her son lightly. The young boy pouted and attempted to protest, but Albert quickly interfered.
"Hey Chuck," he whispered in his adoptive brother's ear, "How about I tell you all about the school during dinner?"
"Really? What's in it for me?" Edward scowled.
Albert quickly searched his coat pocket and found two lemon drops. "I'll give you these if you wait till dinner," he offered.
Edward, who had a huge sweet tooth, didn't waste a second in grabbing the two sweets and exclaimed, "Deal!" before jogging back inside to munch on the treat.
Albert shook his head, laughing fondly. William and Elisabeth, finally having gotten Edward distracted, hugged their elder boy tightly. He might not have been their own, but he still was their little Albert.
"We're glad you're back home again, son," William said, ruffling the young boy's curly brown locks affectionately as Elisabeth kissed his cheek.
"Bertie, you must tell me about the food. Are they feeding you well? Is the food up to your taste?" Elisabeth asked, anxious as to whether Albert was doing okay.
"Yes, Mama, I am eating well. There's no need for you to worry. Besides, I have so much to tell you about the world of magic!" Albert said excitedly as Elizabeth chuckled.
"Yes, dear, we're all very excited to hear," She chuckled as Albert continued to describe his school.
The parents accompanied Albert to his room, and throughout the entire time, he could not stop talking about the self-driving carriages, the magic spells and even the giant castle that consisted of Hogwarts. This all amused William and Elisabeth, who had never seen Albert this excited about something.
"Do you know the plates over there fill up on their own! You don't even need to get another-"
"Slow down lad, I think we've learned more about this place than even the professors there," Willaim chuckled, "Now you must rest up for dinner tonight. I believe you have a very excited audience waiting for you."
After yawning and nodding, Albert retreated to his room and closed the door. As he gazed at his bed, a fond smile appeared on his face. He then sank into the silky covers and quickly fell asleep with a content expression. The first week of summer had started off wonderfully for him.
---
Over the course of the next few days, Albert's previously quiet and shy demeanour appeared to have undergone a sudden transformation. Any family member who was aware of his attendance at the School of Wizardry had to endure hours of him enthusiastically discussing his various areas of study, the different locations he had visited, and the skills he had acquired. William and Elisabeth were overjoyed at his excitement, and even the estate's workers were willing to lend an ear, despite their preconceived notions about witchcraft.
Needless to say, Edward was the most enthusiastic member of the family. The little man was so eager about Albert's adventures that he would regularly sneak up on him doing homework or stay up all night to hear his tales of magic. But he was always amazed, even when he attended to the same stories repeatedly. Nothing made Albert happier than seeing his little brother smiling with glee every time he told him a story about a lost hall he found in the school or about the spells he learnt where he could conjure many random objects into existence.
Of course, the young boy was disappointed when his brother told him he could not show it to him, often asking Albert to prove himself to be a wizard.
"You know, sometimes I don't believe you brother. Don't you think your stories are a bit exaggerated?" Edward said sarcastically.
"Well, if you don't believe me, how about I show you my books, Chuck?" Albert asked with a small smile.
"Really?!" Edward's eyes gleamed with enthusiasm.
"Why, of course! Come on then; do you want to read the book about potions or about charms?"
"Potions, please!" Edward said and got busy trying to understand the ingredients and usage of the potions described in the book.
That's how the weeks went by. So, how could it have gone so wrong so quickly?
The morning of 20th July 1893 started off just as usual. The sun was shining brightly, and everyone was busy working on the estate. At 9 a.m. the breakfast bell was rung downstairs in the dining hall and the first to come downstairs was Edward who was closely followed by Albert. The boys quickly sat themselves down at the table. As they got busy spreading butter and jam on their toast, they suddenly heard a quiet chirrup. The buys turned towards the window and saw a small sparrow busy flitting about.
By this time the parents too had joined the boys and started to partake in their classic English breakfast. While Albert started talking to his parents, Edward continued to follow the quick fleeting movement of the bird closely. The bird had flown from window and decided to perch on the grand piano in the dining hall.
"Look, Mama! That sparrow is trying to play the piano," Edward squealed happily as he saw the sparrow jumping from one key to another as if it was trying to play a tune.
Elisabeth's face turned pale as she unconsciously dropped the glass goblet in her hand, which shattered on the ground, spilling orange juice and shards of glass everywhere. She gasped, and Willaim turned towards her, his brows furrowed with concern.
"Are you quite alright, my dear?" He asked, worry etched on his face.
"Th-there's an sp-sparrow on the piano," Elisabeth's voice trembled with fear. William followed her gaze and found the sparrow flittering on the piano keys. His face fell, and his eyes turned solemn.
"Come on, dear, a pretty bird sitting on the piano means no harm. It is just a harmless superstition," William tried to reason despite his fear of something happening.
"But Papa, what does it mean?" Albert asked.
"Nothing, my boy. It means nothing. Shall we all go on a relaxing drive on horseback through the moors to refresh ourselves?" The boys agreed in an instant.
"What say you, my dear?" William asked Elisabeth. She contemplated for a moment and agreed to let the boys go but refused to go herself. "My sister and some other ladies will arrive soon. I must attend to them," she said and went to the parlour.
"Now let us go have fun, boys," William said, smiling. The boys quickly gobbled up their breakfast. They raced towards the entrance, grabbed their coats, and quickly put them on while William followed behind them leisurely.
The father and sons put on their riding boots and walked to the stables to get their rides. Although William had no problem getting on his horse, It did take the boys a little help to get on. But with the assistance of their butler, they were on, and the three horses trotted to the nearby moor.
William led the way as the boys followed. As usual, Edward wanted to hear stories about Hogwarts. Albert obliged and started to recount a story about how he had met a senior student named Ernst, who seemed surprisingly familiar yet unknown.
"Boys, make sure you have your eyes on the road," William warned.
But the warning was not headed by the boys, who were now in a heated conversation about the best Thanksgiving dinner, Albert had at Hogwarts. they continued to chat while trotting across the field. Suddenly a beautiful apple tree caught the boys' eyes. The tree had beautiful red apples which would have a made a perfect snack for later.
"Want to try and get those apples?" Edward whispered to his brother when he saw their father was out of earshot.
Albert gazed tentatively at the tree, which lay at a distance on the corner of a cliff. Only a skilled rider could pluck an apple without plummeting from the edge. He couldn't risk it. Edward was only 9 and had just started riding horses. Sure, he was tall enough but nowhere as skilled.
"No, Chuck. It's too dangerous," Albert said, trying to avoid his brother's gaze and look for their father, "let's find Papa."
"Oh, come on now! Don't be so boring, it'll be an adventure!" I thought you loved adventures," Edward pouted.
"Don't you think it's a bit dangerous? It's on a cliff," Albert protested, "I can't let you go there, Edward."
"Please?" Edward tried to plead.
"I said no, Edward. We can't go there," Albert said sternly.
"But-"
"No buts. You know I don't like being this stern. Let's just go find Papa. If you still want to go, we can accompany him," Albert said firmly, making Edward scoff. Albert sighed, knowing how stubborn his sibling can get, but decided the course of action would be to find their father, who had gone much ahead of them.
He urged his horse to move faster by kicking his heels into its abdomen. The horse began to trot, and Edwards's horse followed closely behind. However, our young rider was quite stubborn. He kept trotting slowly behind Albert, but as Albert moved further ahead, Edward began to slow down. Eventually, he turned his horse and galloped towards the apple tree.
Albert, who had now caught up with William, both turned their head and saw the young boy, galloping towards the apple tree. They both immediately panicked and galloped behind them.
"Edward, NO! SLOW DOWN!" William shouted.
"I-I Can't!" Edward called out, losing control of the horse. he desperately tried to hold on to the horse's reins but he couldn't do it.
"Don't worry I'm gonna catch you!" William raced his horse to Edward's but he still was at a distance. They were now dangerously close to the cliff's edge. As they approached, Albert's horse hesitated and turned away from the cliff, but William's horse continued to pursue the chase. William urged his horse on, urging it to run as fast as it could.
But unfortunately, Edward's was faster. The horse was inches away from the cliff when it reared onto its hind legs. Edward held on for dear life but slipped off the seat, his body falling with a thud at the base of the tree. The horse neighed loudly before kicking his heels and running away to the distance, his rider, left at the base of the tree. William pulled his horse to stop, quickly got off and rushed to his son's side. His face turned pale, as he pulled his son's body to his lap, blood gushing from the back of his head.
"No-" Albert faltered for words at his father's expression. he never thought he would ever see this sight.
The strongest man he had ever known, his eyes were now pooling with tears. And at what cost? The cost of his son's life.
Albert knelt beside his younger brother. His eyes filled with tears as he let out a choked sob and caressed his delicate and lifeless face.
"I'm sorry," he wept, "I should have let you get the apple."
"No, Albert you did the right thing," William tried to console his son, "It is just that God had to take Edward away from us, sooner than most."
"B-But that's not right, he was supposed to grow old with me and we were supposed to have fun together. He wanted to see Hogwarts!" Albert's lips quivered as tears rolled down his face.
William wiped his own eyes and then wiped Albert's, letting out a sigh. He had no words. So he just hugged his son as slightly as he could, hoping to squeeze out the unsaid pain. The Wyevernbush family would never be the same ever again.
Not after the loss of dear little Edward.
