Behind the name: "The Apis Bull is a deity from the Memphis region of ancient Egypt, who manifests as an actual bull that the people would find due to its distinct markings and bring to a house of worship to care for and pray to until its death. This animal would be pampered and fed better than most people living at the time. I found this little bit of human dynamics interesting, the things people worship. Bull of Bronze comes from the torture and execution implement the brazen bull. Thematically a lot of our work has to do with the means that people in power use to control the lower castes, and to contemplate ways of dismantling that power dynamic." - Achaierai (vocalist) for Moshpitnation 2018.

However, if you think I'm missing out on YOUR favourite album of 2023, let me know. If you're thinking: "63 albums isn't that many, I wish there were more" - you're in luck because there's a Part 2. Bull Of Apis Bull Of Bronze – The Fractal Ouroboros (2023)

James looks at The Fractal Ouroboros, the long awaited second album from Colorado experimental RABM act Bull Of Apis Bull Of Bronze, released December 21st on Fiadh Productions and Vita Detestabilis Records.

Colorado based RABM masters Bull of Apis Bull of Bronze have given us an album with a shocking amount of both ritualistic atmosphere and punishing dissonance. The release not only lives up to the legacy of the band’s debut but breaks completely new ground, not just for the band but for the genre as a whole. Their furious rallying cry to dismantle oppressive systems is captured fully, but also imbued with an unsettling essence of dark mysticism. In short if you want an album that will get you tear down society in its current form but also leave you feeling somewhat haunted, then this is the release for you.

One of the most important animal deities of ancient Egypt was the sacred Apis bull, whose worship is attested from Dynasty I. Near the Ptah temple at Memphis, Egypt's old capital, a living representative of the Apis bull was stabled. He was paraded out at festive occasions to participate in ceremonies of fertility and regeneration. The bull that played this important role was selected for displaying color patterns, such as a white triangle on the forehead and black patches resembling winged birds on the body. When Apis bulls died, they were embalmed and buried with all honors. Beginning with the reign of Amenhotep III in Dynasty 18, the place of Apis burials was a huge and growing underground system of chambers called the Serapeum in the Memphite necropolis, Saqqara.

Chronique / Fogweaver - Labyrinthine (2022)

« La liberté est une lourde charge, un grand et étrange fardeau à entreprendre pour l'esprit. Ce n'est pas facile. Ce n'est pas un don offert, mais un choix qui est fait, et le choix peut être difficile. La route monte vers le lumière ; mais le voyageur chargé peut ne jamais en atteindre le bout. »

C’est ainsi que le créateur de Fogweaver introduit son album, « Labyrinthine », d’après une citation d’Ursula Le Guin.

Fogweaver est un projet de fantasy synth né de l’esprit fertile d’Evergreen, connu pour ses nombreux projets de dungeon synth (Hideous Gomphidius, Keys to Oneiria, Draconic Regicide, Wandlimb), de winter synth (Snowspire), de cosmic synth (Delmak-O), de black metal antifa (Bull of Apis Bull of Bronze) et pour être le créateur du label Fableglade. L’univers de Fogweaver est celui, imaginé par Ursula Le Guin, du cycle de Terremer, cycle composé de romans et de nouvelles de fantasy. Notons qu’il existe un autre excellent projet qui raconte ce même monde, empli de sorciers, et avec qui Fogweaver a réalisé un split en 2020. Il s’agit d’Erreth-Akbe, qui lui aussi a sorti un flamboyant album en 2022, j’ai nommé « A Lantern Swathed ».

D’après la description d’Evergreen sur Bandcamp, l’album « Labyrinthine » est entièrement basé sur le second tome du cycle de Terremer, Les Tombeaux d’Atuan. On y suit l’histoire de Tenar, une jeune fille née dans l’empire Kargish, arrachée à sa famille alors qu’elle était enfant, pour devenir la grande prêtresse des Innommables, car elle est la réincarnation d'Arha, dite la Dévorée. Ce statut en fait aussi la gardienne des tombeaux des Innommables sur l'île d'Atuan. Ainsi veille-t-elle à ce qu'aucun pillard ne s'infiltre dans le labyrinthe, car il recèle de nombreux trésors. Son monde est finalement bouleversé par l’arrivée de de Ged, un sorcier dissimulant son identité sous le nom d’Épervier. La jeune fille s’attachera à cet intrus et finira par l’aider, remettant en question son existence et sa place parmi les Innommables.

À propos de l’histoire de Tenar, Evergreen ajoute :

« L'idée d'être poussé dans un monde où on vous dit exactement qui vous êtes et ce qu'est le monde - qu'on vous dise de ne pas le remettre en question, mais d'accepter ce monde - c'est quelque chose auquel beaucoup d'entre nous peuvent se connecter, j'imagine. Et se libérer de cela est une partie terrifiante, mais cathartique et, souvent nécessaire, de la croissance en tant qu'être humain. »

Comme il est difficile de mettre des mots sur la musique de Fogweaver, tant elle est minimaliste, épurée et tant sa profondeur, pourtant, atteint des sommets ! Sa patte est bien reconnaissable et offre toujours une forme de transcendance. L’intensité n’y a d’égal que la légèreté. L’ombre y est sans cesse chassée par la lumière, dans une danse subtile. « Labyrinthine » dépeint le voyage introspectif qui conduit à la maturité, abordant des thèmes tels que la liberté, la responsabilité, l’autonomie et la libération. Contrairement à beaucoup d’œuvres de dungeon synth, qui sont davantage ancrées dans la nostalgie de l’enfance, comme dans le comfy synth (Grandma’s cottage, Tiny Mouse, ...), ou dans un esprit de révolte « adolescent », évoquant les racines black metal du genre, cet album est celui de l’âge adulte. C’est un passage vers l’âge de raison, âge qui ne prend jamais fin (à partir du moment où l’on a mis le pied dedans), si ce n’est dans la mort. [Suite de l'article en cours de rédaction.]
