Hot Tar Roofing – Everything You Need to Know
Looking for a durable, high-quality, and cost-effective roof? Knowing how hot tar is applied to built-up roofing systems gives you insight into the strength and longevity these roofing systems offer.
New Image Roofing Atlanta gathered information defining hot tar roofing, its benefits, and why finding a certified hot tar installer is crucial.
What Is Hot Tar Roofing
Used primarily in built-up roofing (BUR) systems and modified bitumen roofing, hot tar plays a vital role in protecting commercial, industrial, and residential buildings from the elements and extending the lifespan of roofing structures. However, applying hot tar requires specialized skills and knowledge, making it essential for roofers to be certified and insured specifically for working with this material.
Hot tar roofing (molten asphalt or bitumen application) creates a waterproof membrane on a low-slope roof surface. The process begins by heating the asphalt to a liquid state, which is then applied to the roof substrate using mopping, spraying, or pouring methods. Multiple asphalt-saturated felt (or fiberglass) reinforcement layers are alternated with hot tar to build a durable roofing system.
Hot Tar Roofing Systems Benefits
Hot tar roofing systems offer several advantages that make them popular for commercial and industrial applications. Consider the following aspects:
Durability – Hot tar roofing provides excellent resistance to water infiltration, UV radiation, and thermal expansion and contraction, making it highly durable and long-lasting.
Versatility – Hot tar can adhere to various roofing substrates, including concrete, metal, wood, and insulation boards, making it suitable for multiple roofing configurations and designs.
Cost-Effectiveness – Compared to other roofing materials, hot tar roofing systems are relatively affordable to install and maintain, offering excellent value for property owners over the long term.
Seamless Application – Hot tar’s liquid nature allows for seamless application and tight integration with roofing components, minimizing leak and water damage risks.
Certification and Insurance
While hot tar roofing systems offer numerous benefits, their installation requires specialized skills, equipment, and safety precautions. Roofers must be certified and insured (specifically for working with hot tar). Here’s why:
Technical Expertise – Installing and repairing hot tar roofing systems requires a thorough understanding of roofing principles, materials, and techniques. Certified roofers undergo extensive training and certification programs to develop the necessary skills and knowledge for working with hot tar safely and effectively.
Safety Compliance – Working with hot tar poses significant safety risks, including burns, fires, and fume inhalation. Certified roofers receive training in safety protocols, hazard awareness, and emergency procedures to mitigate these risks and ensure a safe working environment for themselves and others on the job site.
Note: Hydrogen sulfide can be produced from hot roof tar. However, the levels produced are not high enough to affect building occupants. Only levels inside an enclosed asphalt kettle may be high enough to pose severe health risks.
Quality Assurance – Hiring a certified and insured roofer for hot tar installation or repairs provides quality work and adherence to industry standards and best practice assurances. Certified roofers are held to high professional standards and committed to delivering superior results that meet or exceed client expectations.
Liability Protection – Roofing contractors who are certified and insured carry liability insurance coverage to protect against unforeseen accidents, property damage, and personal injury claims. This safeguards property owners from financial liability if accidents or mishaps occur during the roofing process.
Manufacturer Warranty Compliance – Many roofing material manufacturers require installation by certified contractors to validate product warranties. Hiring certified roofers ensures that your hot tar roofing system is installed according to manufacturer specifications, preserving warranty coverage and protecting your investment over time.
Finding a Certified and Insured Roofer
When selecting a roofing contractor for hot tar installation or repairs, it is essential to research and vet potential candidates carefully. Here are some tips for finding a certified and insured roofer:
Check Credentials – Verify the roofing contractor is certified by reputable industry organizations, like the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) or the Roofing Contractors Association of America (RCAA).
Review Insurance Coverage – Ensure that the roofing contractor carries liability insurance and workers’ compensation coverage to protect against property damage and injuries on the job site.
Tip: Reputable roofing contractors will provide a COI (certificate of Insurance) for your roofing project upon request.
Request References – Ask for references from past clients and review online reviews and testimonials to gauge the roofer’s reputation and track record of quality work.
Get Written Estimates – Obtain detailed written estimates from multiple roofing contractors, including the scope of work, materials, timeline, and concise pricing breakdown. Compare proposals carefully before making an informed decision.
Ask About Warranty – Inquire about materials and installation warranty coverage, and ensure the roofing contractor stands behind their work with a written warranty or guarantee.
Hot Tar Roofing Systems
In this article, you discovered defining information about hot tar roofing, its benefits, and how to vet certified and insured roofers.
Hiring a certified and insured roofer (specifically trained in working with hot tar) is essential to ensure the roofing system’s safety, quality, and longevity.
Failure to understand hot tar roofing applications and properly vet roofing contractors may leave you with a poorly installed roof with a significantly reduced lifespan.

is there ever going to be a house style that looks good in minecraft that isnt european/medieval or the millenium years old at this point rectangle with triangle roof intersecting another rectangle with triangle roof and so on multiple times. im so sad the concept one with double slanted roofs i tried to make looks like an abomination
this looked so good on paper but once u build it it doesnt even look like a house. this was supposed to be cozy but its just jarring. the palette and details are just tests but just the wireframe of the house looks wrong by itself no matter what blocks are used
and then every other variation is the rec+trig roof i mentioned. im so sick of houses like this but nothing else seems to work
#i also have many requirements like open floors and open balconies like the one i built thats so niceys bc of the slanted roof#but im genuinely tired of the generic house. ive seen thousands of these at this point. what else even is there to build#i Tried to build a somewhat modern slanted roof house but it looked super out of place. minecraft is all about oldness yknow?#no wonder i keep picking up the game for two weeks and giving up. i never get past the build a house stage of the playthrough#and even when i did i just dug into a mountain and made that my house. multiple times. bc its fun. but i also miss having many windows#and the balcony and stuff. sigh#dextxt#minceraft

Built-Up Roofing (BUR) – Everything You Need to Know
Are you looking for a durable and economical roofing solution? A built-up roofing system (BUR) may be what you are looking for.
newimageroofingatlanta.com gathered information on built-up roofing systems (BUR), its benefits, installation, maintenance, and how it compares to other popular roofing systems. Consider the following:
What is Built-Up Roofing (BUR)?
Built-Up Roofing (BUR) is a time-tested, staple roofing system in the construction industry. This roofing system is composed of multiple layers of bitumen (asphalt or coal tar) and reinforcing fabrics, typically fiberglass or organic felts. These layers are applied in a repetitive fashion, creating a seamless, durable membrane. Gravel or mineral granules are often embedded into the top layer to protect it from the elements and provide significant UV resistance.
BUR Installation
Installing a built-up roofing system is a somewhat labor-intensive process that requires the expertise of skilled roofing contractors. Here is a step-by-step guide to how BUR is installed:
Deck Preparation – The process begins with preparing the roof deck, ensuring it is clean, dry, and in good condition. Existing roofing material is removed, and any necessary repairs are made.
Vapor Barrier Installation – A vapor barrier is installed to prevent any moisture from entering the building through the roof. This layer is essential for maintaining a comfortable indoor environment.
Insulation – Insulation is added to improve energy efficiency and temperature control. Insulation can help reduce heating and cooling costs.
Felt Layers – The first layer of roofing felt is applied directly over the insulation. This is typically a base sheet, and is secured using hot asphalt or adhesive.
Bitumen Application – Multiple layers of bitumen are applied over the base sheet. The bitumen is heated and spread evenly across the roof, followed by the application of a reinforcement fabric.
Reinforcement Fabric – Fiberglass or organic felts are embedded into the hot bitumen. This adds significant strength and stability to the roofing system.
Repeat – Steps 5 and 6 are repeated until the desired number of layers is achieved. A BUR system typically consists of three to five layers.
Surface Layer – The top layer or cap sheet, is made of bitumen and covered with aggregate materials like gravel or mineral granules. This layer provides protection against weather and UV radiation.
Final Inspection – After the surface layer is installed, a final inspection is performed to ensure that the roofing system is correctly installed, and there are no defects.
Maintenance – Regular maintenance is essential for a BUR system to maximize its lifespan and performance. Periodic inspections, cleaning, and repair of any damaged areas are crucial to its long lifespan.
BUR Advantages
Built-Up Roofing has several advantages contributing to its enduring popularity:
Proven Durability – BUR systems are known for their long lifespan, often exceeding 20 years or more with regular maintenance. The roofing system’s multiple layers and redundancy make it resistant to leaks and damage.
Waterproofing – The bitumen layers and reinforcing fabrics create a seamless, waterproof barrier that effectively protects the building from any water infiltration.
Thermal Performance – The insulation layers in BUR systems can enhance a building’s energy efficiency, reducing heating and cooling costs.
Fire Resistance – BUR systems can be made with fire-resistant materials, making them an excellent choice for buildings in regions prone to wildfires or with strict fire codes.
UV Resistance – The top layer of aggregate materials offers UV protection, extending the roofing system’s lifespan.
BUR Disadvantages
While Built-Up Roofing offers multiple benefits, it also comes with some drawbacks:
Installation Complexity – BUR installation is labor-intensive and requires experienced roofers. This can increase the initial installation cost.
Weight – BUR systems can be heavy, potentially requiring additional structural support for some buildings.
Maintenance Requirements – Regular maintenance is crucial to ensure a BUR system’s longevity, which can add to the overall cost of ownership.
Odor and Fumes – The installation process involves heating bitumen, which releases unpleasant odors and fumes. Proper ventilation is necessary during installation.
TPO and PVC Roofing System Comparison
To make an informed decision about your roofing system, it’s essential to compare BUR to other popular options, like Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO) and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) roofing systems.
TPO Roofing Vs. BUR
TPO roofing is a single-ply membrane roofing system made from a blend of rubber and other materials. Here’s how it compares to BUR:
Installation – TPO roofing is relatively easier and quicker to install compared to BUR, which can significantly reduce labor costs.
Durability – BUR is known for its durability and long lifespan, often exceeding TPO systems. TPO can be more vulnerable to punctures and tears.
Energy Efficiency – TPO roofing reflects sunlight effectively, helping reduce cooling costs. However, BUR systems with added insulation can achieve similar energy efficiency.
Cost – TPO roofing can be cost-effective in terms of installation, but BUR may provide better long-term value due to its durability.
PVC Roofing Vs. BUR
PVC roofing, like TPO, is a single-ply membrane roofing system made of polyvinyl chloride. Here’s how it compares to BUR:
Installation – PVC roofing installation is similar to TPO (ease and speed). It may be a more cost-effective option for initial installation.
Durability – BUR is often considered more durable and resilient against severe weather conditions. PVC roofing may be more prone to damage over time.
Energy Efficiency – PVC roofing has excellent UV resistance and reflects sunlight effectively, providing energy savings. However, BUR can achieve similar results with added insulation.
Cost – PVC roofing can be cost-effective for initial installation, but BUR offers better long-term value and longevity.

world building is such a weird hobby because you'll be figuring out the rules of the universe of have a massive creative breakthrough and all your cat sees is you staring at the wall for three hours
#i should really really be focusing on my assignments and deadlines#instead i'm thinking about what bored teenagers would get up to in a city where the streets don't provide much space to loiter#what's the fantasy version of skateboarding???#maybe there's a strong parkour culture#everything is built so close together and the height differences are so intense that some people's roofs are other people's sidewalks#food for thought

not me importing my anti-air defense worldbuilding h/cs into ishgard bc I can
#saint.txt#long post#ishgardposting#tl;dr in my personal project one of the big things is that (one) military has had to evolve alongside gryphon riders for a long long time#who's biggest threat are information gathering and the fact they drop flechettes and are nigh-untouchable by anything even each other#even with firearms (which are still very early tech-wise) so anti-air defense is paramount#the biggest results being that *everything* has a roof on it to mitigate stuff falling from the sky.#cities are cramped and avoid open space as much as possible. anti-bird spikes but scaled up on steep roofs so that birds can't land.#buildings are made of non-flammable material like stone when possible. open areas exist mostly as corral zones so that tired birds#must land there and can be easily surrounded on the ground.#but the flashiest is killwire which is basically just wire strung between tall buildings that discourages flight below a certain level#and is difficult to see especially at speed or at night#and if you hit it. well. the idea is based off motorcycle accidents where people have hit wire fences on farms so I'm sure you get the idea#not all of it will apply to Ish.gard but I highly believe that's exactly why Ish.gard is 98% built out of stone#as are all their forts and important structures like bridges. I also believe realistically most streets should be roofed if possible#and open space is kept at a minimum even if daniffen's ward exists. anti-dragon spikes consisting of slots to put lances in on roofs.#Ish.gard might not even have much of a need for 'traditional' forts with huge walls and such bc 90% of their enemies fly so their fort#designs might get a little wild after 1000 years of war. w/ magitek via stephva.nivien you might even electrify the killwire.#ofc some of it already seems to exist - ish.gard's roofs and spires are built *very* steep which would make a dravanian landing on them#difficult and even without that most of them are covered in spires and spikes anyway but. ofc there's the dragonkillers and such too but#ish.gard is a city built on 1000 years of war and hyperspecialized to fighting dragons that fly we really could make it look like that too.#I want to walk into ishgard and immediately know this is a place built on war bc everything about it is hyperspecialized and utilitarian#to fulfill that purpose. look up in ishgard and the stars are replaced with glittering wire.

It's been super windy the last two days, and a tree decided to give up the ghost and fall on our apartment last night! Thankfully it appears the only damage is to the fence between our building and the neighbor. The tree is actually leaning against the roof of our balcony/roof of the building. (I couldn't get that in a photo because the sunlight is weird and was messing with my camera.)
I'm not all that shocked that this particular tree fell, it's been losing branches in wind storms for years now. It sure was loud and scared the crap out of me when it happened! For a brief moment I thought the roof might cave in! It wasn't until this morning when my husband woke me up that I knew what happened. He checked the balcony last night to see if the wind knocked over his bike, but it was still standing. Somehow he missed the tree just a few feet away, lol!
#so that's my excitement for the day lol#the squirrels don't mind at all -- they are excited to have a bridge to the roof of the building!#right now it's kinda funny to me* but I'm sure I'll be very annoyed by how loud the clean-up will be#you can tell our balcony railing is old and hasn't been repainted in a long time#I'm positive the railing is still the original one and this building was built in the 50's or 60's#* it's only funny because nothing really bad happened and no one got hurt#fallen tree

Anyway about 24ish blocks of copper slabs/rails (each, roughly) and about 2 stacks of redstone blocks later and I have made it to the trail ruins! When I build whatever kind of tunnel/covering over the thing this will by far be the largest thing I've ever built help
I still need to finish the upper rail that I'm standing on so it goes over the ruins and connects to the jungle over there. So it might be more like 25 or 26 stacks by then lol
#now to just-- figure out how I want the enclosure to look#like probably just a long tunnel with some stations along it#but no idea how to design it#usually my method is to just start placing blocks on either side of the railway#then build up layer by layer until eventually it meets at the top and makes a roof#if that makes literally any sense lol#minecraft#stuff i built

Back in build mode, I'm making the Pleasant Family house now 😊
EDIT: I noticed the windows on the far right that were juuuust slightly off literally minutes after I posted this and it has been fixed lmao. I'm sorry for exposing my glaringly unfortunate inability to make things symmetrical.
#these photos are unedited and the back of the house lacks a roof and there is no landscaping yet but just ignore that lmao#these are just to show off the progress so far#I've built their house 4 times in the past and hated it every time but I'm really happy with it this time#and I'm taking creative liberty on the bedrooms because they ended up huge and it was too late to fix it so yeah#progress#the pleasant family
