I have some feelings to share:
I know that the majority of people didn't like the later seasons of Riverdale. I held off watching the last two seasons until recently. I finished season 6 mid-August and just finished season 7 about fifteen minutes ago.
Were they ridiculous seasons, and did they look nothing like seasons 1 and 2? Yes. Were they straight up bad? Absolutely not. I am sure I'm in the minority here, but I did not hate them.
Season 6 was outlandish and supernatural, but I chose to look at it through a lens of fanfiction. Season 6 was an AU. It was built to be fanciful and weird because that's what AUs can be. Our favorite characters can be superheros and fight comets and bad guys because that's what superheros do in AUs. By very definition, its an alternate universe.
Season 7, being back in the 1950s is again, an AU choice. However, being set in the 1950s is an homage to the comics. Did the ships play out how we wanted? No. Did they give us tastes and teases of what we did want? Sure. We got glimpses of what we knew these characters to be.
I watched the last 40ish episodes in a state of suspended disbelief. I knew I wasn't going to get Bughead in its purist form. I knew things would be different, but I watched anyway because I spent years getting to know these characters. I've spent years loving them and appreciating them.
I did not expect to sob uncontrollably after watching the series finale. (If you don't believe me, ask Bina, I sent her a snapchat of my sobbing.)
The Bughead fandom, this show, has brought me immense joy over the past seven years. It has given me space to find my love of writing again. It has provided me with a small corner of the internet to learn and create and find my people. It provided comfort in a time of global uncertainty. It gave me one of my best friends. It gave me somewhere to escape when I didn't know how else to deal with myself or my emotions. I hid here for a very long time until I was ready to face things. I got to experience things and people I'd never have gotten the chance to without it.
Riverdale isn't just Murdertown, USA. Riverdale is where I went for a visit, and it welcomed me without question. In my time in Riverdale, I learned about myself. I learned about life and love and people. I learned that everything is not what it appears to be. I learned the art of kindness to strangers. I learned appreciation for art and hope. Riverdale has given me so much that I will never be able to thank it for properly.
Riverdale will always be a second home. This community will always be a second home, even if there isn't much left of it.

wip wednesday
is this still a thing? regardless, here’s a snippet from this oneshot i’m working on, where Betty joins Jughead on a trip to Ohio for JB’s high school graduation. it’s set a few weeks after the end of 5x17 (which is why i tortured myself today by sitting through it) and goes au from there:
A few hours later, they cross the border into Pennsylvania.
“So…” Betty pauses, unsure how to phrase her question. “Your parents…they’re still living together?”
“They are,” Jughead confirms. “They seem to have figured out whatever it is they needed to figure out. Wish they’d done it when I was in high school, but better late than never, I guess.”
“That’s nice. For JB, at least.”
“Yeah. No sleeping in the janitor’s closet for her, thank god.”
Betty’s heart twinges at the reminder of Jughead’s temporary stint with homelessness. She hadn’t known about it until he was safely ensconced in the warmth and stability of the Andrews house, but she remembers crying when he told her, and how he’d tried to comfort her, which only made her cry harder.
“And your mom’s…” She hesitates again.
“On the straight and narrow? Somewhat. I think she’s still involved with that chop shop she was running, but there’s no meth lab in the basement or anything.” Jughead shrugs a little. “Aside from that I don’t ask a lot of questions.”
In her lap, Betty’s phone lights up with a text from Kevin: I have an update on the ~Tangs situation. Lunch @ Pops?
She hesitates, then texts back in as few sentences as possible an explanation for why she’s currently driving across northwest Pennsylvania with her high school ex-boyfriend.
Typing bubbles appear at the bottom of the screen. Then her phone rings.
“The fuck,” she mutters, silencing it immediately.
Jughead glances over. “Do you need to take a call?”
“No. It was just spam.”
I’m literally sitting next to him right now, I can’t talk
!?!?!?!?
I expect ALL details when u get back
Betty rolls her eyes.
FYI he’s not dating Tabitha. They were faking it for her parents
Ohhh
That makes more sense. They have zero sexual chemistry
Kevin continues texting her with various “tips” for the weekend ahead, but Betty tucks her phone back into her purse. She’s not taking advice from the guy who somehow ended up on the losing side of a three-way-parenting love triangle situation by the age of 25.

✨Fic Update: In Technicolor—Ch.4: Play Both Sides (Bertie)✨
Tumblr media
There weren't curated pictures of cheer practice or makeup routines. No glamourous travel vlogs or dances with siblings or friends. Actually, her account was almost void of any friends except for two people--Reggie and some guy named Kevin that she called her gay husband. I was pretty sure he was on the football team and that that was where I remembered him from. I always caught them coming up the stairs in their letterman jackets with Jason Blossom at the center and Reggie's squeeze, Archie joining them in his swim team hoodie. But other than them, the space was void of friends. There were blurry unfiltered pictures of her nightly adventures. Trips down to the beach. Short videos of Wynn walking the shores alone with the wind whistling while she sang to herself. Pictures of her orange tabby cat, Thing and her Siamese cat Lurch that groaned tiredly at the camera whenever she called its name.
My favorite was the reel of her resting her chin on Lurch as the fat cat purred and meowed with eyes closed. Smiling when she giggled, I shut myself up as the panicked scream gagged me when I, like an idiot, hit the heart icon on her video. Undoing the like, I laid there traumatized. Screamed internally as I stared blankly at the video. Fuck. Would she get a notification that I had liked her video? Or would taking back the like undo that?
Would it be weird to google that?
Her activity setting was on. I could tell because there was a green dot next to her default image. Not good. A half second later I got a notification that I had a new message. Definitely not good. Really not good. It was Wynn. In my DM's with the message reading "Bertie??" and nothing else. Bad. So bad. Now I really wanted to die. Staring at the message, another one followed it up a couple seconds later.
"Or not," she said. "Sorry."
Now I was the asshole. God damn it.
"No, yeah. It's me. Sorry, I diddn't see your message." I wrote out. Kicked myself mentally when I read it over a second time. "*didn't."
"lol. No worries. I saw your name on a notification so I snooped a little wondering if it was really you." Before I could type out a full response, Wynn added on, "You don't seem like the type to be on here often. Guess that's why it was a surprise."
She wasn't wrong. I wasn't really into it. "Was it that obvious? I have an ig account because it's how I keep in touch with my cousins and extended family that live in Texas and Mexico."
Looking up when Pugs smacked my hip and told me over my music that we were home, I told him I'd be in in a sec. Eyes back on the screen, I smiled dumb when I saw her next message.
"Mind if I add you??"
Bad but also good. So anxiety inducing.

this is gonna get like 3 votes but. lisa frankenstein jarchie au. archie is the creature.he and veronica are from the 1800s and jughead is from the 1980s (i am nothing if not faithful to source material). question is where do i put betty
pros and cons to each
we'll start with 1800s betty. potentially it could have a little arc where jughead helps archie do some sleuthing to find out what happened to veronica after archie died, and they could find out (via cheryl because yk family history) that veronica opened her own business and lived for years and years with her close best friend, cheryl's great great great whatever aunt betty, in a one bedroom flat and adopted two cats. i could give cheryl a line about "of course that means they were lesbians" and then jughead would have to explain to archie that his dead ex gf was bisexual + i could write a cute 1800s beronica romance prequel if i was so posessed
or
betty was jugheads childhood best friend, they're very close and there could be like minor crush territory. she could be cheryl's cousin and although the bughead would not be endgame i do like them quite a lot so there would probably be some of that. i just like betty tons and i wanna write her and cheryl and their dynamic because it's hilarious to plusssss it would be fun if she had more presence in the story. downside is that i'm unsure how i'd end up resolving her arc and doing her justice with so much else going on
no see results option because why do you gaf
god all this for a fanfiction i'm not gonna write ffs

Since I finished Riverdale, lemme give yall a list of uh let's say iconic moments that DON'T make it into top posts
People talk about Archie and the bear but don't always mention the reason he's in the woods is to hide from a mob boss the specifically has beef with him.
Apparently there was talk of whether Bughead (bettyxjughead) was incest and some have even implied that Veronica has an oedipus complex but there's an actual pair of cousins that have a baby bc they don't realize they're related thanks to some old ass family feud
Josie's send-off/comeback episode that was clearly supposed to help her spinoff into her own series that never happened and yet Katy Keene was a thing?
Aliens don't exist but angels do (side bar: Tabitha's time traveling episode was one of the best)
Reggie and Archie say they love each other after a threesome
Reggie kills his double
Cheryl's mother was adopted and raised in the family to eventually marry their son.
Kevin's dad and Archie's uncle fuck. No they don't talk about it.
Speaking of Kevin, people like to point out the batshit cult but never mention Kevin joined not one but TWO and was the creative director for one of them
Toni has a baby that everyone insists on referring to as "Baby Anthony" and it had me confused thinking there was another Anthony in the mix. Why did they do this?

down at the drive-in ch 2 sneak peek
I originally had dreams of finishing and posting this investigative bughead story on riverdale series finale day but life got away from me. so, in honor of the end of the ridiculous show that brought us bughead and the beautiful fandom space we’ve all created together, here’s a sneak peek. I love you all and personally, I plan to keep writing rvd fanfic so this isn’t goodbye to our bughead family—it’s just farewell to canon, whatever the hell that even means anymore.
Tumblr media
It’s strange to admit, but the creepy, bigoted mystery she’s been investigating with Jughead has turned Betty’s attitude around. Each day she wakes up with a spring in her step. The hunger she feels to solve this mystery is new and exciting, like nothing she’s ever done before. (And yes, she’s counting the time she streaked with Cheryl and Veronica.)
Every day that week, Betty and Jughead spend their once-quiet lunch hours in the Blue and Gold office examining evidence and talking out theories. They keep the door shut in an unspoken ritual, something sinister about the case lending itself to confidentiality.
On Tuesday, they spend the lunch hour poring over the Riverdale section of 4chan, even following a couple offshoots and more obscure right-wing forums in the area, but come up with no leads. Betty leans over Jughead to see his laptop screen, and there’s a moment when their eyes lock and she knows neither of them are thinking about the case. But the moment passes unacknowledged, and when the bell rings, they go their separate ways.
On Wednesday, they come up with the idea to put up a flier for a Young Republicans club, hoping to bait the bigot into bragging about their crimes. They even consider going shopping for more conservative looking clothing, but then….
…On Thursday, the members of Toni Topaz’s militant feminist club spend their lunchtime meeting phone banking the number on their flier in protest, flooding Jughead’s voicemail inbox with angry messages.
“We should’ve invested in a burner phone,” Jughead murmurs, his phone to his ear as he empties his voice mailbox, one by one.
“I just don’t think the Blue and Gold has a burner phone budget,” Betty insists, and after realizing what she’s said, they both burst out laughing.

2024 FRC - July 🍁
Hello everyone! I hope you have been enjoying your summer! I've never been so grateful for a/c in my life because it's been super warm and lovely here. We finally got the gang back together for a family photo and in a completely unplanned but super fun way - they all showed up in band shirts - the *same* band shirts. I think that illustrates some pretty good parenting there I think. 😏
Tumblr media
Anyway, I am just about finished with the @fanfic-reading-challenge I have two number tasks (12mill and 15 mill) that I haven't cracked yet and then there are five tasks that I can't complete until December. But other than those, I can read whatever I want now. I'm excited to go back and reread old favourites.  If you have a favourite fic that you think I’d like - please let me know!
Tumblr media
As for my monthly recs for you - I hope you'll give these ones a chance. Read and review - tell the authors how awesome they are.
my heart, oh my heart by @auspicious-goblin (Carmy/Claire - T 1/1) - I don't read a ton of 'The Bear' fanfiction (mostly because I don't ship the predominant ship) but once and a while something just jumps out at you and this is one of those stories. It's actually less shippy and more about trauma and identifying self-sabotage (which is seriously what the show is about to me). The characters are written SO well - and the ending feels really earned. It's not a long fic, but it's one I've thought about a lot since reading it. I highly recommend.
He Ain't Heavy, He's My Leprechaun by @he-aint-heavy-hes-my-leprechaun (Sweeney/Laura - T 7/7) - There are several post-S2 fics in the American Gods fandom... but none of the others have a super fun fake-marriage trope and characters written so in character that you'd think you're watching the show. This is a delight.
Harvest to Home by @writeradamanteve (Bughead - E 13/13) - If you've been around here for a while, you've probably already read this fic (maybe multiple times) - but this was our first taste of this amazing author's talent and it was SUCH an awesome time to be in fandom. This is completely AU - set on a farm in UpstateNY - and you'll fall in love with every single character. Even Cheryl. SO SO good. I was so happy to reread this one this month.
Tumblr media
Sending love to all of you - hope you have a wonderful August. 🌞

Curious to know which Riverdale couples you think would be closet and spend time together as couples? For example I always head cannoned that barchie would be closet with choni because I always feel like Cheryl and Betty would become close as adults given how much similar trauma they’ve been through and both being the only family they really have left, Toni and Archie are shown as friends after the time jump and Archie’s the only male character Cheryl seems to consider herself friends with. Then I think barchie would be close to jabitha but more separately, whilst Archie’s close to both and Betty and Tabitha are close friends I think them double dating would be awkward given Bugheads past. Choni and jabitha I think would be friendly as Toni and Cheryl are both friends with Tabitha and Toni’s friends with Jughead but again hanging out as couples would be awkward as Cheryl seems to have always hated Jughead.
I love the idea of Choni and Barchie being friends! Toni and Archie are cute friends as adults and it was nice to see Betty connect more with Cheryl in Season 6. Cheryl and Archie also have a cute friendship (without bringing up the shit they did to them in Season 7 lol). I also love the idea of their kids being “cousins!”
I’ve also always thought Barchie would be closest with Jabitha. I loved the hint of that we saw in 6x01 and I wish we could’ve seen more. I think Jughead would accept their relationship over time as a mellowed out adult and slowly rediscover the fact he enjoys hanging out with both of them! I can see the four of them enjoying watching movies and playing board games together.
As for the other characters, I think Betty would stay closer with Veronica individually and Archie would stay closer to Reggie (assuming Veggie never got back together). Also Betty would be close with Kevin and Archie with Fangs (also assuming they don’t get back together).
All things considered, I can see Jabitha being their closest couple friends if everyone was healthy and vibing.

okay very important question, do you count bughead as incest why or why not
This is an interesting question. It really depends on your definition of "incest".
In terms of blood relations? No. They're not incestuous.
However, that's not how I would define "incest".
In my opinion, "incest" is more about whether or not you were raised in the same household as part of the same family.
This is why, despite the fact that Penelope and Clifford are not blood relations, their relationship is CERTAINLY considered incestuous.
So, as I think about Bughead, which I don't often do, I think...No. Not really. You can catch them on a technical point since they do share a half-brother, but I don't think their relationships feels or is incestuous.
HOWEVER, there is more to say on this, which I will address in your second ask.

Riverdale 7x20 - Goodbye, Riverdale (Spoilers)
Jesus, this was depressing. After seven years, Riverdale comes to an end. And I can absolutely guarantee that nobody ever expected it to end like this. That being said, while this is not the ending I would have chosen, I also can't say I dislike this ending. We watched these character going through year after year of hell and the fact that most of them have a good life and there is a happy-ish ending to this...well, I'm content with it. Riverdale, for me, probably will be the first four seasons, but I don't hate this ending.
Anyway, we start with an Eight Six year old Betty who's learned Jughead has passed away. Betty is now the last of the gang to survive. Betty wants to visit Riverdale one last time and her granddaughter promises to take her there the next day. That night Betty is visited by Angel/Writer Jughead who takes her back to the last day of high school so she can see her friends one last time. During these moments we find out what happened to all of the characters. And I'm just going to go through this real quick.
Ms. Andrews will fall in love with a woman who will live in the with Ms. Andrews until she passes away. Polly will end up having her twins (Juniper and Dagwood). Alice will eventually divorce Hal (I think, my cable screwed up and I missed part of this), become a flight attendant, and marry someone else.
During junior year of high school, Fangs records a hit single and is able to convince Midge's parents to let him marry her. Their happiness is short lived as, not long after high school, Fangs goes out on tour and is killed in a bus accident. Midge and her daughter will live off the royalties of Fang's two songs (right).
Pop's apparently dies before the kids graduate high school. That's the grave Betty is visiting. The writers clearly are choosing violence here.
Clay and Kevin move to Harlem together. Clay becomes a professor at Columbia (I think) and Kevin opens his own off Broadway production. Kevin will die of old age in his sleep and Clay will pass away a few weeks later sitting on a park bench.
Cheryl and Toni move west and live a more bohemian life. They have a son named Dale (after Riverdale). They will live a long and happy life together.
Reggie will go on to play basketball for the Lakers and then become the coach at Riverdale High. He has two sons who will run the Mantle used car lot. Reggie was buried in Duck Creek.
As for the core four, well they all decide during senior year to all just date each other. Yup. Well, maybe, as we never see anything happen between Archie and Jughead. After high school....
Veronica moves back to LA and becomes a big movie mogul. I don't think it's directly said, but it seems like she was the first of the four to go. I does seem like Betty, at least, looses touch with her over time.
I'm not going to go into the last Barchie scene. While I didn't particularly like that couple, what the writers did in that scene was nothing short of sadistic to those fans. But one could argue that same was done to Bughead and Varchie fans in season four. Anyway, Archie will go out west and find a woman that he decides to settle down with. He lives a long, good life with her and, when he dies, he's buried next to his father.
Jughead will create Jughead's Madhouse Magazine (Mad Magazine) and had a successful life as a writer/editor. He never marries.
Betty also creates her own magazine. (And late '60s/early '70s Betty's look is my favorite Betty look). Betty never married, but she did adopt a daughter. Which she considers her legacy, her family.
Anyway, Angel/Writer Jughead takes Betty back to the present. The next day, Betty's granddaughter takes her to Riverdale. As they pull into Pop's parking lot, the building is for sale, she discovers Betty has died.
But then young Betty steps out of a car as she has been transported to an functioning Pop's Restaurant. Jason is at the door (yep, the actor is back). And everyone is there (well, of the cast that still worked on the show). And as the story ends, Betty joins the other three at the table and in the Hereafter.
Like I said, not the way I imaged the show would ever end. Not the way I would have ended it. Still, it was a very bitter sweet ending. I shed some tears and, yeah, part of me is sad to see it end.
Of course, that part of me will soon be knocked unconscious by my sanity....
