setter lando being constantly underestimated because he comes across as unserious, until the moment the whistle blows and he slips into this state of intense concentration… always able to read people whether it’s the other team or his own… making friends with everyone because he’s so good at being what they need (it’s his strength and his weakness)

libero oscar being the steady stable presence to keep the team on track, unflappable and collected and just always always always digging the ball… driving opposing teams insane because they just cannot get the ball to hit the floor… the stability lando needs to try ridiculous sets and plays

THE EXPEDITION PROGRAM (TEP):

okay just before i start, i want to briefly explain why all these people are together on a ship.

in this universe, theres a central government that spans across many planets in neighboring star systems. this is known as the Provinces of the Allied Galactic Empire (PAGE). this is the explored and "civilized" part of the galaxy.

recently, there have been more attacks on PAGE-affiliated planets and systems from the unexplored galaxy (known as the Outer Sector, or just Outsec in shorthand) and PAGE intends to get to the bottom of it.

and that's where Scarab Crew comes in! multiple teams were formed of people with exceptional talents in their species/planets and were sent on multi-year long exploratory missions under the name The Expedition Program (TEP). the scarabs are one team of many!

TEP's goal is to record and report all that they find as well as identify threats and/or the planets responible for the attacks. they are to come back with information and new technology that would make PAGE stronger and more well-rounded!

Captain Nieven Alaric (Nee-ven Ah-la-rik)

pronouns: he/him

role: captain/leader/correspondence with PAGE

planet of origin:  Asto’is (species: Asto’isian)

age and height: late '30s to early '40s / 6 ft. 0 in.

description: the competent, calculated, and and cold head of The Scarab. he was a well-off government official before TEP, but unfortunately, he lost his family in an attack by Outsec rogues. he is a man hardened by life and unwilling to get attached to others again and because of this, is very efficient when it comes to running his ship. still, efficiency is not always the most important thing when it comes to leading a team. this is something nieven must learn.

species-specific traits: horns on the top of the head-- very interconnected with the central nervous system. decorated as a sign of age and/or accomplishment. also, asto'isians have pointy teeth! they are carnivores!

Hari Khurana (Huh-ree Ku-rahna)

pronouns: relaxed he/him

role: engineer/medic/chemist

planet of origin:  Earth (species: Homo Sapien)

age and height: mid to late '30s / 6 ft. 2 in.

description: a simple human that started from the bottom. hari grew up in a trailer park, raised by his older sister when his father worked 3 jobs to put food on the table. since he was little, it was known he was a genius when it came to stem subjects. into adulthood, he excelled in every stem job he took on. still, no one expected him to get singled out when TEP was recruiting. aside from his smarts, hari is cheeky, sly, a bit of a Bastard™ but he also has tremendously big heart. he's passionate about what he does, no matter how hard it can be for him sometimes.

species-specific traits: despite his brains, hari is... a defective human. due to malnourishment as a child, he has a plethora of health problems that worry his team to no end. some include: asthma, lactose intolerance, allergies to many foods, marie antoinette syndrome, POTS, among others. he is also a below-the-knee amputee on his left leg due to an accident in his teens.

Nylathrania (Nyla) Qifir (Nye-lah-trah-nya Kee-feer)

pronouns: she/her

role: pilot/navigator

planet of origin: Harye (species: Haryen)

age and height: mid '20s / 5 ft. 7 in.

description: the haryan are an extremely superstitious, winged race that place an extreme importance on flight. when a child was born with in inability to even lift her wings because of nerve damage, you can imagine it did not bode well. nyla was passed around from household to household with no place to call home. she wants to prove herself to her homeland by becoming the most successful pilot in TEP with her pride and joy of a ship, The Scarab, but even that will never make her good enough for her people, and consequently, herself.

species-specific traits: the bat-like wings and short horns are trademarks of the haryen people. unlike nieven's, nyla's horns are simply bony-keratin structures as extra protection for her brain. her wings are a bit smaller than other haryen's due to muscle atrophy.

Ytzel (Zel) Mixca (Ee-tsel Micsh-cka)

pronouns: relaxed she/her

role: gunsman/conflict strategist

planet of origin: Huelxa (species: Huelxcan)

age and height: mid '20s / 5 ft. 4 in.

description: born to a planet of war, zel grew up around bloodshed and violence throughout her life. in her culture, getting close to people was discouraged becasue you never knew who would be on the other side of the next civil war. she was often forced to fight her siblings and friends (to an extreme level) as a test of strength, so she comes off as abrasive and rude because violence makes her feel in control. it's a familiar pattern. she hasn't yet learned that love does not need to be painful.

species-specific traits: the huelxcan actually have a second pair of arms! these arms sit slightly more towards her back, in the middle of her rib cage. the huelxcan people also have evolved with enhanced hearing, and wear accessories on the ears to enhance it further.

Vin’ri (Vinny) L’aoh (Vin-ree Luh-ow)

pronouns: they/them

role: scribe/recorder/photographer

planet of origin: Z’edin (species: Z’edinra)

age and height: late teens (17-19) / 5 ft. 9 in.

description: vinny is heralded as the voice of reason when tensions are high amongst the rest of the crew. they are level-headed and approachable, making them an instrumental member of the team. but their secret? they're so lonely. in their culture, it's customary to stop being affectionate with children when they reach about 14 to encourage growth and independence. vinny didn't have a problem with this at first, but now that they're so far from home? they feel the need for comfort more than they'd like to admit.

species-specific traits: the z’edinra all have a prehensile tail that is about an armspan in length. it is capable of grasping, and can hold their body weight. also, z'edin is an ice planet which leads vinny to be prone to overheating in even mildly warm environments quite easily

Ren "Alaric" (Rehn Ah-la-rick)

pronouns: he/him

role: healer/newest member (not with scarab crew initially)

planet of origin: Siea W5M (species: Amb’toman)

age and height: about 7 years old / 4 ft. 3 in.

description: ren's parent's were killed when he was only 4, and he was taken to Seia W5M to be sold as a commodity-- his species is sought after for their abilities. he was under the ownership of a man for a few years before he escaped and has been on the run ever since. he covers his eyes with a blindfold to conceal the signature trait of amb'tomans-- white scleras lacking a cornea. because of his years blindfolded, light tends to overwhelm him. he is skittish, flighty, and in need of people who will take care of and love him.

species-specific traits: the amb'toman are a desert-dwelling species that evolved healing abilities to cope with the harsh climate. the short version of how the abilities work is essentially: people spend a certain amount of energy to heal themselves of injury or illness. ren can spend that energy all at once on himself or another person to heal them exponetially faster. the draw back is gets extremely sleepy after healing, and tends to be unable to stay awake

Thinking bout Chip Jrwi

This has spiraled from ramblings to character analysis to whatever it has turned into. I rewatched episodes too JUST to make sure I had the right information and plot points in mind cause I want to make sure I’m not making a fool of myself in front of all of Jrwiblr.. ANYWAYS! This is a lengthy read. Total words being 1318 under the cut. Yeah, I’d say the hyperfixation is hyperfixating for sure. Chip Jrwi you are my blorbo atm and you mean everything to me <3

Do you guys think that before they went to the Black Sea, before they left Canella, before they left the town of Zero that Chip looked at his crew, his friends, and his family and wondered if he should stop? Yeah, he lost his old family years ago, and he wanted to do everything in his power to bring them back, to do something about it that his 9-year-old self couldn’t. But do you ever stop and think that maybe he’s realized that he has a family now, a new one and that he’s afraid to lose it to the Black Sea as well? But they’ve come so far now, they found Drey and Finn, hell Finn had been with them the entire time!! They’ve come so far now, and they’re expecting him to want to keep going, to find Arlin, and maybe even some of the other crew they lost as well. I think about it a lot, maybe too much at this point.

Back in the Feywild when Chip could’ve reached out to anyone, he could’ve talked with Arlin again, but he didn’t. He didn’t because he saw something in his nightmares in Liquidis while being cured of his curse. He saw Arlin, covered and surrounded by this black ichor, and he talked to him again. He saw Arlin, the man who took him in when he had nowhere to go, and he had looked at him with so much rage and hatred.. and he had attacked Chip. This would honestly terrify me if I were in Chip’s place. The person who showed me all the care in the world suddenly turned and attacked me? And saying that this has happened before? In a nightmare situation that felt so real, Chip knew it was real… I’d be terrified to find him if he thinks I’m gonna kill him, he’d be fighting for his life too, I’m sure. The Black Sea has affected Arlin too, I don’t think they’ll be able to convince him that they aren’t going to kill him unless somehow Drey and Finn can get through to him, but it seems highly unlikely. 

I think if Chip feels this way at all, maybe not like all I’ve written exactly, I think he feels immensely guilty. He doesn’t want Arlin to be trapped in the hole in the sea, but he’s also immensely terrified as to what he’s going to find once he gets to him. He doesn’t want the person he’s looked up to for so long, the person he’s risked his and his friends' lives for, to hate him. But I also feel that somewhere in his heart (or lack of one), Chip doesn’t blame Arlin for hating him, cause he’s starting to hate himself for getting his new family dragged down into this hole in the sea as well.

Yes, they all chose to come with him to the Black Sea, but if anything happens to them, Chip will forever blame himself for it. Hell, he lost his heart and he has no one other than himself to blame. Jay almost lost her leg (did she? They haven’t made it clear if she did) and I feel that Chip blames himself for that too. Yes, they helped save everyone on the island, but Gods is Chip scared he’s going to lose his family again. Being on this ocean reminds him of when he was just a scared little kid, but now he can do something about it. He’s trying but he’s still so fucking scared. 

Speaking of his heart- he’s trying to hold onto himself. He’s an undead now, and by meta the mechanics of it are roughhhhh. I rambled a bit on another post about one of my characters named Amani, an opal Tiefling whom Chip is starting to remind me of- not exactly but they both have had their hearts taken!! Doing the checks to see if he loses a part of himself terrifies me each and every time and I know there’s going to be more, we can only hope the dice are in Bizly’s favor as we do not know when Chip will be able to get his heart back. It could be months from now, years maybe. I dread the session they head back to Zero and Chip is still undead. I dread Chip reuniting with Ollie. I don’t think Chip wants Ollie to see him that way, he can hide it with the bandana as much as he wants, but the stench of rotten flesh will give it away. Ollie told him to come back alive! Chip wasn’t able to keep that promise. It kills me to think that Chip dies at 19. Yeah he wasn’t a kid, but he was still so young- yeah he might come back once getting his heart but how much of his humanity will he have lost? How much life experience would he have gained in this undead state? He hasn’t even had the time to grieve the loss of himself with everything that's been going on, and I am really hoping with the next episode of Riptide we get to see some of his thoughts on being undead. Yes, he’s made jokes about it! But I feel he still hasn’t fully processed it all and once he finally does it's going to be PAINFUL. 

He’s grown so much from this journey with Jay and Gillion, he was using them at the start, to get back his family. I mean I could be wrong here, but it certainly feels like it at the start of everything anyway. Along the way though, he started opening up a bit and he realized that while sailing and learning about the whereabouts of his family he’s lost, he’s made a new family. And it’s become precious to him. It shows how he has grown during the fights he had with Gillion, the first fight they had dealing with Chip lying and pranking him, wounding Gill’s pride. They resolved it after communicating and getting to know each other better. The second fight was initiated by Chip himself because he knew he was in the wrong and that he had hurt his friend by keeping the fact that Edyn was working with the Navy a secret. He remembered how much lying had hurt Gill, and as much as he didn’t want to tell him at the time, he wanted to protect Gillion from the truth of his sister potentially doing something dangerous behind his and his friends' backs. There hadn’t been much time in between Gillion escaping the pearl and the time that he found out about Edyn, and Chip had tried not to think about it but those damned bracelets (WHICH I WISH THEY WOULD USE MORE?? WHERE DID THEY GO-) outed him on those thoughts. He stayed up ALL NIGHT just to build the arena, just to show Gillion he was sorry and that he needed to fix it, he wanted to fix things between them both. He goes on and on about how Gillion’s actions helped him change for the better, about how he cares about him, and that he never meant to hurt him. Of course, this ends in them battling again, them starting the fight and Jay ending it like the girlboss she is, but this battle was never out of malice or anger, it is light-hearted and fun, and it shows that they’ve all grown stronger together. 

I love Chip Jrwi, I am so happy that he got a second third chance at a family- He deserves it and the world. I totally will be coming back to this at some point but this is all I have to say for now! I love the fact that it was Steph, Tim, and Cass who had been calling out Jason's shitass plans and dramatic ass persona in the latest chapter.

It's the fact that these three didn't know him at all, having joined the family after him and therefore didn't have the emotional turmoil Alfred, Bruce, and Dick have.

It's the fact that they are the ones who can understand him having gone through same shit(Steph being the alley kid and having problems with Bruce, Tim dying and resurrecting so many times, Cass's bad dad and assassin training) also means that they are less forgiving towards his actions (or atleast definitely more annoyed in Tim's case)

Just love it 10000/10, these three ate, truly "Teenagers scare the shit out of me" And "Teenagers are the meanest people in the world" Moment, kick his ass my children you all are doing amazing

YEAAAAAH THANK YOU!!! I knew that those three wouldn't have the same baggage as the rest of the Bats, and therefore don't have the same emotional connection, at least not directly.

Together, they would be the biggest foil to Jason's plans, as they all represent specific parts of him, but they coped in a very different way.

Steph is an alley kid and has committed her life to helping those in similar situations to her, but her friction with Bruce has made her hyperaware of her mortality and how little she matters to Bruce in the long run (this is incorrect but he's so shit at showing otherwise). She never had the bond Jason had with Bruce, and therefore her expectations for him (in relation to her) are super low. She aligns with Bruce because they fight the same fight, but she doesn't trust him with her. He is not her parent, he is not her mentor, they are barely coworkers in her eyes. As a result, Jason's behaviour makes her annoyed and frustrated. It's a bit of jealousy (why does HE get to have dad!batman and not her) and also confusion (how did he live with Bruce for this long and not understand his priorities???)

Bansheeverse!Tim has been traumatised over and over by his own deaths, despite his proclamations otherwise, to the point that his annoyance at people fussing over it slowly bleeds into annoyance at Jason's actions. He genuinely doesn't understand. Like in the original banshee fic, Tim's view of it slowly changes as he sees the others accept Jason back, resulting in a 'his death meant more because he means more as a person'. Crack Your Molars!Tim has not gone through this yet. Nor was he attacked by Jason. This results in him going the opposite direction to Bansheefic!Tim. Jason is a pest, he's taking things too seriously, and most importantly, he made the Bats aware of his powers, and that's really unforgivable to Tim.

Cass is only vaguely similar to Jason (via assassin ninja training), but beyond that, they are completely different. Cass cannot empathise with him at all. She has incredibly strict lines when it comes to killing, even stricter than Bruce, so Jason absolutely baffles her. To her, Jason kills because he can. He kills because he's lashing out. Because he can't control himself. He kills and therefore he is an enemy. And that's before he tried to attack Tim. Once Tim and Steph become involved, Jason is not just an enemy, but a threat to her people. I interpret Cass as someone who has massive respect for people who have the power to kill someone, but don't. I think it's why she's so close to Tim. Bruce is very similar to Cass, yes, but Bruce is also an adult, and subconsciously treats her like a weapon, just a non-lethal one. Tim doesn't do that. Neither does Steph. They have the power to kill, but do not use it, they have chosen to protect people, and while they appreciate her presence in their mission, they do not expect it of her. They are therefore Hers. And both Bruce and Jason mark themselves as threats to them. The gloves therefore come off.

Together, they are so so catty and mean and wonderful and kind, and I really need to write more about them. They're in a codependent queerplatonic relationship your honour.

more thoughts on volleyball au

the grid is in two teams, they aren't professional players, this is just a community league that these two teams happen to take ridiculously seriously. lewis is captain of one team, max is captain of the other.

they play practice matches against each other all the time because they're the only really competitive teams in the area. they call each other sworn rivals and everyone else in the community league hates how dramatic they both are about it all

max is an excellent captain until it comes time for pep talks, so he offloads this duty to lando or daniel. lewis gets carlos to yell at his team for him when they aren't listening and lets george give powerpoint presentations on strategy

not a single on of them takes it easy on the highschool kids in the league because they are ridiculous competitive idiots

the office that i work in used to be a post office. there are still some old remnants like the old vault and the old cashier windows.

there was a catwalk above the main room to allow the postmaster to watch the workers sorting mail. it’s gone but the ladder to get up remains inside the women’s restroom. up the ladder is a small platform with a door that i assume would have gone to the catwalk but now leads into my boss’ office. to prevent sound from leaking through a big piece of styrofoam was placed over the door.

it fell over. so i was asked to climb the ladder to fix it. because i am small and young and an intern. and honestly sometimes i’ll just do whatever they ask of me.

of course i said yes because i’m not scared of heights and i always sort of wanted to climb it. i enjoy going to places that are usually not typically meant to be gone in.

so i very awesomely and bravely climbed the ladder, fixed the foam, and climbed back down. and got dust on my pants. so basically i’m super awesome
