Gwendolyn: You wanted to see me, Mr. Giles? Giles: Yes. I do apologize for bringing you in at this late hour. Gwendolyn: Please. A good Watcher must be awake and alert at all hours. Giles: Would you like some tea? Gwendolyn: God, yes, please. I'm completely knackered. I spent the afternoon training with Faith. She doesn't lack for energy. Giles: She's your first Slayer, I take it? Gwendolyn: If you're questioning my qualifications... Giles: No, I'm not. I, uh, have the utmost respect for your methods... in my own American way. I also have the glove. Oh, not actually on me, but, uh, I believe it's safe. It's in a mansion on Crawford Street. A-a-a friend of Buffy's is keeping it there. Gwendolyn: Well. We must get to it. Immediately. Hide it before someone else finds it. Giles: Or better still, destroy it. Gwendolyn: Destroy it?

@loved-the-stars-too-fondly tagged me in a ship meme! I will try to make this interesting lol.
1. First ship
It’s a tie between Aladdin/Jasmine and Simba/Nala, because I saw both of these movies about the same time as a little kid. And my sixth birthday cake had a picture of Aladdin and Jasmine on it, and I used to tell stories about them to myself on the playground, but I had plushies of baby Simba and Nala with magnetic noses that could “kiss.”
2. First OTP
I am taking this to mean “first fic you felt strongly enough about to produce content for or engage with in a creative/fandom way,” in which case that would be Michael/Mia from The Princess Diaries. I wrote one (1) bad fanfic when I was 13 (about how Michael proposed and then Grandmere threw a fit BUT then he saved her life while they were horseback riding) that’s still on ff dot net somewhere, and I read basically every fanfic for them that was available on ff dot net. I still have an enormous soft spot for them and I reread the books every few years.
3. Current favorite ship
Since I’m on a Dimension 20 kick right now, even though I haven’t read much fanfic yet I’m going to say both Fig/Ayda from Fantasy High and Ricky/Esther/Sofia from The Unsleeping City. Fig/Ayda is incredibly cute because Fig is a tiefling with shapechanging ability who had a string of questionable romantic encounters with much older men before meeting Ayda, the teenage curator of a magic library who is also an autistic Black phoenix. Fig is very impulsive and brash, but also emotionally closed-off and insecure, but she starts bonding with Ayda because Ayda thinks she’s really cool and admires her bravado. Fig doesn’t know what to do with someone who’s so intimidating but cool who seems to really like her, and, well, you can watch this scene where they get together, it’s very good. It contains Fig vomiting into a bush, then saying “I think you’re perfect the way you are,” then skateboarding away in a panic. It’s maybe the most accurate sapphic rep I’ve ever seen.
Ricky/Esther are just two incredibly nice people who get together in The Unsleeping City, but I think that they should also get together with their friend Sofia because of reasons. I genuinely think the canon supports this reading quite a bit.
4. Your ship since the first minute
I have a fun story for this, which is that literally since day 1 of Korra, I wanted her to have a girlfriend (post date: 12/7/11), and the second Asami showed up I was like eyes emoji. And then I dropped off the show after the first season for a few reasons, kind of assuming they would never do an f/f couple and casually shipping Korrasami sort of out of spite, but THEN my friend messaged me immediately after the finale like DUDE YOU’LL NEVER BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED. And that was honestly one of the emotional high points of my fandom life.
5. Ship(s) you wish had been endgame
I have...many! Bering and Wells from Warehouse 13 is paramount, obviously, because that is a wound in my soul from which I will never recover. Cartinelli from Agent Carter slightly less so, but I think that was truly the last time that I had real hope for a canon f/f ship. I think Matt/Foggy/Karen should have all been romantic together because Matt/Karen by themselves has weird vibes and I don’t like it. Obviously I think Fitz should have died in the series finale and Skimmons should have been canon, and as far as I’m concerned he died of a brain tumor after that and then they got together. (Daniel is also involved still, he’s a chill dude and I like him and it’s fine.)
6. Ship you wish was canon
Grace/Dani from Terminator: Dark Fate, because wow did they shoehorn in an incredibly hilarious attempt at mommyzoning Dani (didn’t work, it’s still gay fuckos). But it would’ve been nice if they’d just leaned into it and let the horny lesbian ghost that possessed the screenwriters make it explicitly gay. Also I think Cameron/Donna and Gordon/Joe from Halt and Catch Fire should have been canon because that show is already basically about the world’s messiest polycule anyway, and Joe is canon bi and already treats Gordon like a booty call, and Cameron and Donna act like either romantic partners or bitter/awkward exes, so like. c’mon. Also I think Daisy/Robbie should have been a thing.
7. Ship that most of the fandom hates but you love
Natasha/Bruce is cute COME AT ME. Age of Ultron is a bad movie but they could have been cute!!!!
8. You don’t even watch the show, but you ship it
Uhhhh. Most things I end up secondhand shipping I end up consuming the canon for eventually lol. I was secondhand shipping Cameron/Donna from Halt and Catch Fire last year because my friend was watching it but then I just...also watched it lol. Uhhhh. The Killing Eve lesbians seem fun I guess? I’ll get to that eventually.
9. Ship you wish had a different storyline
I’m digging deep for this one, but Buffy/Faith from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I think they had SUCH a cool dynamic that kind of stopped getting explored after season 4, and it’s a bummer. I don’t think they’re like, endgame or true love or anything, but I think they’re sort of the messy pair that can’t completely disentangle from each other, and maybe they don’t even really want to? I think that they couldn’t live in the same house or anything but that they meet up and hang out and probably fuck every couple years, and it’s good.
10. Favorite ship(s) that’s endgame
GAMBIT/ROGUE GOT MARRIED IN THE COMICS. I’M SO PSYCHED. I don’t know if Karolina/Nico from Runaways counts as endgame but I love them, and I also love Gert/Chase. I’m rewatching Nikita and am delighted to know that Michael/Nikita is still very good. Priya/Tony from Dollhouse is also very good. Daisy/Daniel was honestly the best outcome SHIELD could have realistically given me and I was quite happy with it. I don’t know if Magnus Archives ships count but I really like Georgie/Melanie (we stan sapphic accidental apocalypse cult leaders). Oh and I like all the canon Avatar: The Last Airbender ships too.
EDIT: I FORGOT MY BELOVED ARAGORN/ARWEN AND WILL/ELIZABETH (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN).
I’m tagging @swiftzeldas @toriasimmons @dollsome-does-tumblr @theomenroom @zenithofdork if you wanna!

I’m now rather cynical about destiel meta, so please excuse me. I’ve been holding onto these feelings for a while now.
I kind of hate this ask I answered because the only people who reblog and/or like it now are people who condescend or patronize me just for not thinking that every single fucking piece of set design is some super secret code that Dean is bisexual!
One of the reasons I departed from the destiel meta community is my complete bafflement with the meta writers who still for some reason have faith in the artistic integrity current crop of writers and producers. Dean didn’t dance with Garth in his dentist dream because Dean is going to integrate more with his inner self, let go all of his insecurities about what kind of man John wanted him to be, and embrace his bisexuality. He danced because Dabb made yet another cheap pop for the audience who still shallow the show whole sale and keep begging for the taste, no matter how insultingly stupid and nonsensical Supernatural has gotten. Anael knew that Ruby was actually loyal to Lilith?! WHAT! How can anyone think that’s anything but a giant fuck you to the audience?
Do I personally think Dean is bisexual? Yes. But I do think that every single person who has ever worked on the show in its 15 year history thinks that, HELL NO! Also I deeply doubt that Jensen thinks Dean is. So why would he play that scene in the Benders like Dean is bi? Especially way back in season 1 when the show was still acting like Dean might just be as macho and douche-y and very heterosexual as he portrayed himself as being.
It has to be said that there are accidents in art! I mean, no fucking really, right?
Not every single detail in every single TV show you’ve seen was planned by a creative mind. Writers and directors even make mistakes! Kripke didn’t plan on the big, over arcing Bible Apocalypse for Supernatural until season 4. All of that vague speech making on the part of Azazel in season 2 wasn’t connected to anything concrete in Kripke’s mind at the time. Kripke got lucky and was smart to hire Ben Edlund because the two of them were able to make everything seem connected even though it wasn’t originally. Also, if it wasn’t for the writer’s strike in season 3, the show would have been entirely different because Dean wouldn’t have gone to Hell in the first place, which means angels probably wouldn’t have been a part of the show. So there were mistakes and plot holes back when the original creator was still running the show. How can anyone have such perfect faith in that flawed group of people to believe that every action done by them is clearly a part of some secret code and not done for a plethora of other reasons? A director might choose ascetics over symbology, or rather what the symbology of the meta writers believes it to be. The “symbol” could be an in-joke for the crew. The set could have been dressed for Sam and Dean to stand in one part of it but for some reason Sam and Dean perform the scene in a different part of it.
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
In the sixth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer a few of the characters wore shirts with numbers on them for no other reason than it was fashionable at the time. The fans ascribed all kinds of symbolic meanings to the numbers on the various characters shirts but they meant nothing, nothing at all. A number shirt can be just a number shirt and the same is true with Supernatural.
But okay...even if that completely innocuous scene of Sam and Dean playing pool in the Benders was an untold message to fans possessing a higher knowledge of Dean that he sucked off one of the bikers in the bathroom...what does that give us? I guess for some people it paints an image of Dean always being secure in someway with his sexuality. That’s good for those people, I guess. You do you. I still don’t understand why it’s wrong or harmful for some people, like me, to believe Dean largely repressed his bisexuality his entire life, so much so that he hardly if ever acted on those feelings, especially if he has a significantly higher preference for women.
Of course all of this is probably moot anyway because I don’t think bi!dean or textual destiel will happen. I think it’s possible that Dean and Cas will ride off into the sunset in Baby at the end but the state of their relationship will be cloaked in subtext and metaphor because Dabb doesn’t have the balls to do something that will make significant chunks of the fandom apoplectic.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer 12#3
If we don't make through this...keep up the fight. ~ Buffy Summers
The Reckoning is derivative and boring. While the art is best it's been in this season, the dialog is simply subpar. Buffy has always been lauded for its dialog yet there's not a single memorable line in this issue!
Scoobies, accompanied by slayers (no known faces present, just a nameless, generic, slayer-y mass) are preparing to face Harth and the demons at Willow's empowerment center. Andrew arrives just in time to help them - a white suit wearing, heat packing, apple juice drinking fabulous gay mega-baller Andrew. It's nice to see him! Andrew brings supplies, mostly communication gizmos for all the fighters and a command van for Giles. Naturally, he wants to join the fight, but Buffy sends him away, similarly to how she send Angel away in Chosen. Second front and all that - if things go bad, Buffy and Giles want Andrew to rebuild Watcher's council. Andrew promises to not let them down and leaves. I like it, it's a solid ending to Andrew's arc. What follows his departure is a number of personal pre-apocalypse-y scenes. It's like End of Days, almost exactly, just with less impact, nuance and wit. It's an off-brand End of Days. Xander and Dawn have a completely unnecessary scene about Xander's involvement in the battle (as opposed to him staying with his daughter) where Xander sounds like he's fifteen again. Angel and Fred finally talk about the body sharing issue. It's a quiet, well-done moment, it's just, why now? This stuff should have been addressed in the previous season of Angel, you know, before Angel and Smurfette started dating. I like the scene but this isn't the time nor place for it. What, they haven't discussed it before? Willow talks to Faith. Understandably, Will is downhearted about her future and Faith gives her a nice, little pep talk. Willow had a lot of scenes like this, in pretty much every season since the sixth. There's nothing new here. So what's the point? And why Faith? After all, Willow and Faith are not that close. Why not Buffy? Or Xander? Or maybe even Giles, it's already a rehash so why not reference the similar exchange from End of Days too? Buffy and Spike have a bittersweet, goodbye-but-not-really moment, very similar in tone to their interactions from late season seven and early season ten, just more couple-y and way more mature. Why were they broken up, again? I mean, if they're still written like the lead couple?
Tumblr media
The battle looks great, visually, the art is a big improvement over the previous issues, sadly though, all of this is completely boring and I dislike how there's so much focus on characters who are not Buffy! We don't really get to see her fight. Fray and Erin confront Harth, Angel and Spike kick ass together, snark-free, and Illyria punches through demons. Faith takes most of the page space, however, suggesting that she should sacrifice herself instead of Buffy and when that turns out to be impossible (don't even ask, even I can't wank that away!) she charges at The Mayor. Yes, progress, character development and so on - where's Buffy? I don't understand it, this is supposed to be Buffy's epic, legendary, final battle and we don't get to see Buffy actually battle? Anyway, initially the plan was to take out Harth as fast as possible but as the fighting progresses Buffy decides to go with plan B and let the history play out just like in Harmony's tale. Buffy's seemingly desperate decision rings hollow because the situation is not that desperate. Aside from nameless slayers nobody cares about nobody actually dies. So why the desperation? Why can't they just keep fighting? Angel and Spike try to dissuade her but Buffy's made her decision. Buffy and Giles say their goodbyes, a shameless rehash of a similar scene from Spiral. After a trite and vapid speech (stop with the speeches, Buff!) Buffy and Willow grab the scythe and, just like in the previous season, suck the power out of slayers. I need to say this. Buffy is officially as bad as the watchers, possibly worse. One thing that characterizes boys in tweed is that they don't see the slayer as a person, but as a weapon. Well, to Buffy the slayers aren't even weapons, they're batteries and, at this point, she's basically a vampire. Thankfully, at least slayers' memories are left untouched. Does that mean that the history can be changed? Yes and that's exactly what Harth does. Using the staff of one of the wizards that created the slayer line he absorbs the entirety of its power. Shocking twist, huh? No, no it's not, this is the third time in a row where the increasingly lame (seriously, Harth has all the dialog lines and charisma of a bad 80s cartoon villain, he's what Buffy used to parody for goodness' sake) big bad steals Buffy's power. I'll rehash myself - if you do it every season it's not shocking, it's not surprising, it's just obnoxious.
This issue is not awful but it should have been so much more. I’m disappointed.

Willow’s vampire doppelgänger made her debut in Season 3, but it wasn’t until a few episodes later that the human Willow met her blood-sucking counterpart. Willow didn’t believe the pair had anything in common at the time, observing of her doppelgänger, “I'm so evil… and I think I’m kind of gay.”
It turns out that by the end of Buffy’s sixth season Willow would be both of those things. In Season 4 after breaking up with Oz, Willow finds herself attracted to Tara and realizes she’s a lesbian. Then, in Season 6, after Tara’s unexpected demise, Willow, who had been teetering on the edge all season, went completely dark. She became evil in ways her vampy doppelgänger probably never could have imagined. Willow even used her vampire look-alike’s signature catch phrase “Bored now,”before magically massacring the man who killed Tara. So much for nothing in common.
9 DAWN’S DEBUT IS FORESHADOWED
Tumblr media
Fans were left scratching their heads when Buffy’s sister Dawn was introduced in Season 5, especially since the characters acted as if she had always been around. But it turns out Dawn’s arrival was foreshadowed more than once.

In the two-part Season 3 finale, Faith tells Buffy she’s “all dressed up in big sister’s clothes.” Later, when Faith and Buffy share a dream, Faith talks about Little Miss Muffet,  a reference to Dawn. In another dream in Season 4, Faith and Buffy discuss how much Buffy has to do with “little sis coming.” Then, in the Season 4 finale, Tara instructs Buffy to “be back before dawn.” Finally, as the episode ends, Buffy peers into the empty room that would become Dawn’s in the very next episode.
8 BUFFY’S SARCASTIC PREDICTION
Tumblr media
In one of the show’s most heartbreaking story arcs, Buffy lost her mother Joyce in Season 5 after a battle with a brain tumor. Just as Joyce seemed to be on the mend, she suffered a brain aneurysm and perished unexpectedly. What fans may not have noticed is that Buffy predicted her mother’s passing in an offhand comment the season before.
In the fourth season premiere while buying textbooks, Buffy makes a joke about their outlandish price tag by commenting, “I can’t wait ‘til my mom gets the bill for these books. I hope it’s a funny aneurysm.” Ouch. Buffy creator and executive producer Joss Whedon had planned Joyce’s demise well in advance and incorporated that throwaway line to foreshadow things to come.
7 TARA KNOWS WHAT GILES WILL DO
Tumblr media
When big bad Glory was searching for her magical key in the fifth season, she came to the conclusion that it had to be Tara because she was the newest member of the Scooby Gang. However, when she realized Tara was just a plain old human, Glory brain-sucks her, turning Tara into one of her minions.

While Tara loses her faculties in most ways, she somehow becomes plugged into Glory’s wavelength, easily leading the gang to Glory’s tower in Season 5' finale “The Gift.” Yet, her abilities seem to go beyond that. As the group is exiting The Magic Box, Tara has a moment of clarity as she walks past Giles. She turns to him and accuses him of being a murderer. The gang is surprised and confused. But the accusation turns out to be prophetic. Before the fight with Glory is over, Giles takes out Ben, Glory’s host body.
6 XANDER WORKED AS AN EXOTIC DANCER
Tumblr media
During the summer after high school, Xander took off on a road trip to see the United States. He was gone all summer and never contacted the rest of the gang, so they assumed he was traveling the whole time. However, in Season 4's premiere, Buffy learned the truth: Xander never made it past the southern California city of Oxnard because that's where the engine fell out of his car.
In order to pay for the repairs, Xander spent a month and a half working at the Ladies Night club washing dishes. That is until one night when one of the male strippers called in sick…While Xander refused to say more, the implication was clear: the (strip) show had to go on, so Xander filled in.
5 WILLOW MUSICALLY REFERENCES SEASON 1
Tumblr media
Fans agree that the iconic Season 6 episode “Once More, With Feeling” was one of the high points of the series. Willow didn’t get a ton of singing time during the episode but she had a noteworthy line in the early number “I’ve Got a Theory." In the song, all the characters propose ideas about who could be responsible for the musical plague they're experiencing. Willow’s theory was “Some kid is dreaming, and we’re all trapped inside his wacky Broadway nightmare.”
RELATED: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER: 10 SCARIEST MONSTERS, RANKED
Willow didn't pull her theory out of thin air; that exact scenario happened to her before in the Season 1 episode “Nightmares,” in which a child turns people’s worst nightmares into reality. Willow’s nightmare: that she had to sing onstage.
4 BUFFY’S FATHER REMAINS A PART OF HER LIFE
Tumblr media
Buffy’s father Hank is barely seen in the series. After her parents’ divorce, Hank had minimal contact with his daughter. If anything, most fans thought of Giles as Buffy's father figure. Yet Hank wasn't completely gone from Buffy’s life.
In the show’s first three seasons, Buffy saw her father several times. He periodically came to Sunnydale to see her on weekends and she visited him in Los Angeles over the summer. Then in Season 6, after Buffy’s mother passed away, Buffy unsuccessfully tried to reach her father. It seemed like maybe Hank was gone for good. Yet in the comic book continuation of the series, Hank makes an appearance to visit with both Buffy and Dawn.
3 SPIKE KNEW HALFREK WHEN…
Tumblr media
The episode “Fool for Love” details Spike’s backstory, including his pre-vampire days when he was simply a bad poet named William who was in love with a woman named Cecily, who cruelly rejected him. However, the episode wasn’t the last we saw of Cecily — or at least the actress who played her.
RELATED: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER: 10 STORYLINES THAT HAVE AGED POORLY
Kali Rocha returned to in Season 6 to portray Anya’s vengeance demon bestie Halfrek. And when Halfrek and Spike happened to run across one another in the episode, there's a telling moment where they recognize each other. Halfrek even refers to Spike as “William." Many fans took the moment as confirmation that Halfrek and Cecily were the same person — a theory that was later confirmed by Whedon.
2 BUFFY EXPIRES AT THE SAME TIME AS HER CREDIT CARD
Tumblr media
It's no secret that Buffy enjoyed some retail therapy every now and then. But one subtle detail has her expiring at the same time as her mother's credit card. When Faith swapped bodies with Buffy in Season 4, Faith used Joyce's credit card to book a flight out of Sunnydale.
On the phone, the expiration date she gave for the card was 5-0-1. In other words, May 2001, a date that happened to coincide with Buffy’s Season 5 finale a year and a half later when Buffy sacrificed herself to save Dawn.
1 SPIKE AND ANGEL SHARE A NAME
Tumblr media
Fans know that Spike and Angel went by different names when they were human. Spike’s given name was William, a popular moniker in England where Spike was born. Meanwhile, Angel’s given name was Liam, the Irish form of William.
The names share the same origin and meaning, with Liam arising out of the name William. That means for all intents and purposes, Spike and Angel’s given names are the same.

Day of the Moon (Doctor Who S06E02)
Tumblr media
Today Jon is forced to watch and recap “Day of the Moon”, the second episode of Doctor Who’s sixth series. The world is infested with sharply-dressed aliens, and the Doctor and his entourage must figure out a way to remember the aliens in time to save humanity from them. Will they succeed?
Keep reading to find out…
Eli, I can’t tell you how thrilled I am that you enjoyed the season four premier of TGG so much! I can never really tell which episodes are going to do it for you, so this was a very pleasant surprise! I agree that little bits like the Fritz Stickelmeyer subplot really flesh out St. Olaf as more than just an especially dumb town, and I’m looking forward to your reaction to the revelations about the town that are yet to come. Also, just between you and me, as someone who works in the mental health field (for now) I can totally confirm that a sheepskin is a bit of an overqualification. You did a great job with this one, Chief, and I hope you enjoy the rest of season four as much as you enjoyed this episode!
Meet you at Benihana after the recap?
Buttocks tight!
Episode directed by Toby Haynes and written by Steven Moffat
After a quick recap, we jump ahead three months to see Amy being chased through the Valley of the Gods in Utah. Canton Everett Delaware III and his men corner her, and she asks if he knows why he’s doing all of this. She asks him to remember the bunker, and we see some flashes of Amy, Rory, River, Delaware and the Doc being pursuit by those tall, slender suited fellows. Delaware shoots and kills Amy, and we jump ahead to Area 51 (Dreamland!) to see the Doctor being held prisoner. Delaware lets the Doc know she’s dead and asks about the strange tally-marks on Amy’s skin. Jumping over to New York, we see River Song with those same marks on her skin as she’s confronted by more of those suit enthusiasts. She ensures the creatures that she sees them and jots a few more tallies onto her arm. Delaware and his men arrive, but she jumps out of the skyscraper they’re in rather than be captured. Delaware makes another trip to Dreamland and lets the Doc know what happened, and we learn that an inescapable prison is being built around him. Jump to Rory at the Glen Canyon Dam in Arizona. He, too, is caught by Delaware’s men and Delaware shoots and kills him, too. The bodies of Amy and Rory are dragged into the Doc’s completed cell, and we learn that the cell blocks out any sound or radio wave, meaning they’re safe from being observed. Amy and Rory are revealed to be alive, and it turns out the TARDIS was cloaked inside the cell as it was being built. They make a quick egress and catch River as she falls from that skyscraper. The completed squad makes their way to the launch site of Apollo 11, where the Doc declares that Neil Armstrong’s foot is their secret weapon against the suit enthusiasts.
With the credits finally taken care of, we see Amy and Delaware pulling up to the Graystark Hall Orphanage. In a flashback we see that the squad has been combing the globe and know that the suit enthusiasts are everywhere, with a large concentration in America. The Doc’s giving them all injections, and Amy reveals that she was wrong about being pregnant. The Doc explains he’s injected them all with nanorecorders. They record a message to themselves any time they’ve seen one of the suit enthusiasts, and the recorders blink so even if they forget what they saw they’ll be able to tell if they’ve have an encounter afterward. Delaware’s palm is immediately blinking, because there’s a suited fellow in the TARDIS. Only, there’s not. It’s a hologram made from the picture on Amy’s phone, and the Doc cooked it up to prove a point to everyone.
Cut back to Amy and Delaware at the orphanage. The inside of the orphanage is covered in graffiti warning everyone to get out. This orphanage was supposed to close years ago, but the man running the orphanage is clearly a little confused. Amy goes upstairs to scope the joint while Delaware keeps the confused man busy. The Doc, meanwhile, is caught tampering with Apollo 11. Things start to get spooky for Amy, and her nanorecorder tells her she’s had an encounter. Her past self tells her to get out and she tries, but the door won’t open. She’s covered in tally-marks, and sees the ceiling covered in snoozing suit enthusiasts. The door open and she looks away, forgetting what she saw and leaving the room. Nixon arrives to get the Doc out of trouble. Delaware goes through the records with the orphanage boss man, who says he as to care for The Child. Amy sees a woman with a very chic eyepatch through a door, but the woman says Amy’s just dreaming. Inside the room Amy sees some pictures of Jefferson Adams Hamilton and herself holding a baby. Just then someone in a space suit walks in the room and lifts their visor to reveals Jeff herself. Amy’s shot missed, and she asks the girl to tell her who she is. The girl asks for Amy’s help, but then some suit fanatics arrive.
More suit enthusiasts arrive to boss the boss man around, and one informs Delaware that tits people have ruled Earth since the days of the fire and the wheel, but it’s not armed. Delaware shoots it and runs off to help Amy. The Doc tells Tricky Dick to record everything that happens in the Oval Office, and River lets the Doc know Delaware needs their help. The squad regroups at the orphanage, where they find Jeff’s empty suit and Amy’s nanorecorder lying on the floor. The nanorecorder is live, so they hear Amy freaking out about being in the dark. The Doctor & Co. go to check on the suit enthusiast Delaware shot. It reveals that its race are the Silence, and that Silence will fall. Finally, that’s getting addressed!
Back at Dreamland, Delaware exits the Doc’s cells after being in there a few days and he brings Nixon along to give him credibility. River and the Doc take apart Jeff’s suit and River reveals that it’s an exosuit with a hundred types of life support. They don’t know what the Silence would want with Jeff. River thinks the girl’s human, but she had to be ripped to bust her way out of the suit. The Doc figures the Silence have been guiding humanity forever, and that explains why we suddenly wanted to go to the moon. Back in Area 51, Delaware is trying to treat the Silent he shot. The Silent says that’s a dumb thing to do, since the Silence have been ruling humanity from the shadows and all. Delaware records the Silent’s speech and sends it to the Doc while River figures out that Jeff’s suit is repairing itself.
Through the recorder, Rory hears Amy apparently declare her love for the Doctor instead of Rory, because that’s always fun. Amy wakes up surrounded by Silence, who inform her they’re keeping her alive for now because she will bring the Silence. She’s been here for a while, but she keeps forgetting and going to sleep. The TARDIS suddenly arrives and Rory tries to free Amy while the Doc sets up a TV set. He has Delaware hijack the footage of Armstrong’s landing with the recorded speech from the Silent from earlier. It tells everyone to kill the Silence on sight, and since everyone remembers commands given to them by the Silence even if they forget the creatures themselves, everyone’s going to be going after every Silent they see from now on.
The Silence aren’t happy and they begin zapping around electricity while River’s shooting and the Doc’s doing… something with his screwdriver. Rory figures out that Amy was really planning on telling him how much she loves him, not the Doc. Everyone makes it back to the TARDIS and the Doc lets Nixon know the Silence should be taken care of. Nixon asks if he’ll be remembered, and the Doc assures him no one will forget him. Delaware needs to marry a dude (gays Ain’t So Bad!), so Nixon lets him out of the FBI. The Doc drops River off back in prison. They have their first kiss from the Doc’s perspective, which will also be the last time from River’s perspective. Amy, Rory and the Doc take off and Amy tries to remember all the junk that happened to her. Amy talks about being pregnant and says she didn’t tell Rory about being pregnant because she didn’t want him to worry about the baby having space complications. The Doc says they still need to figure out who Jefferson Adams Hamilton is and what the Silence want with her, and Amy and Rory are still concerned about the Doc being shot by an astronaut. The Doc does a scan of Amy and the TARDIS says she is and isn’t pregnant. Six months later Jeff is walking through a city alley and tells a homeless man she’s dying, but can fix it. She proceeds to regenerate like a Time Lord.
The End
~~~~~
So, let’s get this out of the way. I think the Silence were inspired to some degree by the Slender Man mythos, specifically a webseries called Marble Hornets. Marble Hornets premiered in 2009 while these last two episodes of Who came out in 2011, at a point when the Slender Man fandom was at (one of) its peak(s). Yes, I can absolutely see where the argument could be made that the Gentlemen from Buffy the Vampire Slayer inspired the Silence (even though a defining quality of the Gentlemen are their big, metallic teeth, which the Silence definitely don’t have), and I can even buy the official story that they were inspired by The Scream by Edvard Munch. However, the Gentlemen are not abnormally tall and thin like the Silence are. Slender Man is. The Gentlemen don’t interfere with the memories of their victims. Slender Man does. The mere presence of the Gentlemen doesn’t cause physical symptoms such as the stomach aches Amy described or the headaches some other characters seemed to suffer from. Slender Man hurts his victim’s heads so badly that they’re often shown having nosebleeds after running into him. Prolonged exposure to the Gentlemen doesn’t cause permanent damage to one’s psyche or memories, prolonged exposure to Slender Man does. The Silence have eyes and Slender Man doesn’t, granted, but to me the overall similarities are just too striking to ignore. I don’t think the Silence are bad villains or that theses are bad episodes because of them, don’t get me wrong. But I went through a phase where I was really invested in Marble Hornets and a few other Slender Man-related series, and it just bugs me that Slender Man isn’t getting the acknowledgement that I feel he deserves.
With that done, I think these two episodes did a good job of setting up some more plotlines for us to follow throughout this series, such as who shot the J.R. the Doctor and what’s up with Jeff and Amy’s pregnancy, and I’m interested to see how that all plays out. I’m pretty over Rory being insecure about his relationship with Amy, and I really hope that gets left behind soon. Delaware was a pretty cool add on to the crew, but based on what he said in the last episode I’m not sure we’ll be seeing him, or at least his young self, again. I thought the actors here all did a good job of acting freaked out, and the Doc’s way of getting around the defenses of the Silence was pretty clever.
I give “Day of the Moon” QQQQ on the Five Q Scale.
Tune in again on Friday when Eli will get some new perspective with the next episode of The Golden Girls, “The Days and Nights of Sophia Petrillo”, and I’ll check in on Saturday to with my recap of the next episode of Doctor Who, “The Curse of the Black Spot”.
Until then, thanks for reading, thanks for shooting and thanks for being One of Us!
Some time ago, I found myself in need of a vacation read. I am a book critic, so this was an easily solved problem: I perused the enormous pile of books on my desk that had been sent to me by publishers, found a galley that didn’t look too dark or esoteric, and set out for the beach with it. Bookburners, it was called.
Many pages later, I put down the book in a state of deep confusion. I wasn’t confused by the plot, which was deeply readable: It was the story of a black ops team working on behalf of the Vatican to exorcise demons from books, and it followed the team all over the world as they traveled to one beautiful city after another to kick demon butt.
Nor was I confused by the writing, which was zippy and fun, if oddly variable from chapter to chapter.
But I couldn’t make heads or tails of the structure.
Each chapter of Bookburners was a discrete unit, with its own three-act structure and a clear ending, but I couldn’t call the book a series of vignettes, exactly; there was too much of a through-line for that. There was a twist toward the end that arrived earlier than it would have in a traditional novel; it felt like the twist that typically comes four episodes before the end of a 22-episode season of television. (Think Tara dying and Willow turning evil in the 19th episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s sixth season, as opposed to the big reveal that traditionally comes in the penultimate chapter of every Harry Potter book.) In fact, the whole thing felt kind of like a TV show, just in text form.
But it was a book! Why, I wondered, would you structure a book like a season of television? It made no sense! The flow was disrupted; Bookburners felt like a story that did not want to be swallowed whole but rather read in discrete bites, one after another. I couldn’t lie on the beach and lose myself in it because it actively did not want me to do so.
Then I looked up Bookburners online, and everything became clear.
Bookburners was one of the first works published by Serial Box, a service that aims to become the HBO of serialized fiction; I was reading a novel/TV show hybrid, a book that was designed to read like a season of television. Its very existence displayed a major reversal of how we’ve traditionally thought about these two media: TV once aspired to be called “novelistic,” but now, in an age in which TV is increasingly described as “better than books,” here was a book built to act like a TV show.
“I need to understand everything about this,” I thought to myself, and made some calls to Serial Box.
Over a series of conversations, I was introduced to a new way of thinking about written narrative fiction that pulls heavily from the way we think about TV in 2018, and that seeks to lend the ever-endangered medium of the book some of TV’s bright Golden Age sheen. Here’s how you try to create a new kind of written fiction for the age of Peak TV.
Serial Box
Serial Box’s serials are built roughly on the TV show model. Like most TV shows, each title has a writers’ room, with one or two showrunners leading the charge. The showrunners develop a Bible that contains all of the necessary information and backstory for the world and the characters, and the writers’ room works together to break down each “season” into episodic chunks that are helmed by individual writers.
Every week, Serial Box publishes a chapter-length episode for its active serials. (Just like a TV show, each serial goes on hiatus for part of the year.) You can buy chapters on their own ($1.99 each), buy a season pass that gives you access to one season of a specific serial ($16.99 to $22.99 depending on the length of the season), or subscribe to a whole serial ($1.59 per episode no matter how many seasons or episodes are ultimately produced). You can read episodes via the Serial Box app, on the Serial Box website, or download them to one of your own devices.
Each episode is designed to take 40 minutes to read, so that you can finish one during the average two-way commute. Once a “season” of any given story is complete, after 10 to 16 episodes, it is bound together into a book, the way an arc of a comic book is bound together and sold as a graphic novel. In the case of Bookburners, the bound version of season one was what had ended up in my galley pile.
Serial Box
Serial Box was founded by Julian Yap, a former lawyer for the Department of Justice, and Molly Barton, who used to oversee Penguin Random House’s global ebook strategy. It emerged in part out of a desire to problem-solve for writers.
For Barton, serialized fiction seemed like the best solution to a very basic problem she encountered again and again among authors she worked with: “One of the ways popular authors outgrow their following is having trouble consistently coming back with new books on a regular schedule,” she told me over the phone. “But it’s hard to write great fiction on a regular schedule.”
With serialized fiction written by a TV-style writers’ room, the requirement to produce great fiction gets delegated. It becomes easier to put everything together. “You each write about 30,000 to 40,000 words [over a season], and altogether you end up with a book of about 120,000 words,” explains Bookburners showrunner Max Gladstone.
For readers, the pitch is that Serial Box marries the best of two media: “Serial Box brings everything that’s awesome about TV (easily digestible episodes, team-written, new content every week) to what was already cool about books (well-crafted stories, talented authors, enjoyable anywhere),” promises the website.
“I was aware that for many people, reading a book can feel rather slow and daunting compared to other media forms at this point. It’s harder to fit into your life,” says Barton. “Let’s go back to the Dickens model. Let’s be Shonda Rhimes for books, and harness the power of telling a little bit of the story each week, and really take pleasure in consuming the story bit and bit, and being able to switch seamlessly from reading to audio.” (Serial Box also publishes its serials in audiobook form.)
But there’s a danger that the television-style writers’ room that makes Serial Box an attractive sell to writers might dilute the sell to readers; namely, that books come with distinctive voices from authors they already know and love.
In a Serial Box serial, each episode is written by a different author, and the author’s narrative voice is responsible for everything: not just the dialogue, but also details about what the world and the clothes look like and what the reader can “see” — details that, onscreen, would be handled by set-dressers and costumers and directors. Serialized books don’t have the same crew around from week to week providing a consistent aesthetic, the way that TV shows do; in effect, you are getting not just a new writer but also a new director and art department and actors and editors every single episode.
So to keep a serial from getting jarringly inconsistent each week, the writers’ room has to develop a voice. But to keep the voice compelling, each writer has to maintain a certain amount of individuality.
“There’s a balance to be struck there, always,” says Gladstone. “On the one hand, you probably don’t want one episode of a series to feel like it was written by Virginia Woolf and another episode to feel like it was written by Joyce Carol Oates. But if you have two authors who have markedly different styles, there’s enormous artistic potential in how the two voices talk to each other.”
“In the end we decided: Try to sound as much alike as possible, but don’t go crazy,” says Ellen Kushner, author of the beloved Riverside series of novels and the showrunner for Tremontaine, a Serial Box prequel to her Riverside books.
She says she spent a lot of the first season of Tremontaine revising each chapter to make the voice consistent (“The secret sauce is me,” she admits), but now that Tremontaine is four seasons in, she finds that her team has developed a house voice that it can maintain on its own.
The ideal balance between authorial voices depends on what episodic structure any given serial wants to take on. One like Tremontaine is almost purely novelistic in its sensibility and voices — it sprawls like a TV season, but you can binge-read it like a particularly long fantasy epic. In part, that’s because it is Kushner’s brainchild. “I don’t really watch TV,” she says. “I don’t know that aesthetic.”
Kushner brought in other writers to function as her “TV brain,” but the idea of structuring each chapter like an episode of television was foreign to her. Instead, she turned to the model of the short story. “When I wrote episode 1×01, it was great!” she says. “Everyone came back and was like, ‘This is the first chapter of a novel.’ And I was like, ‘So?’ And they were like, ‘Where is the tension?’ So each episode,” she concludes, “has to be treated as a genuine short story.”
That’s part of why the Tremontaine writers’ room had to develop a consistent voice under Kushner’s supervision: There isn’t much space, in a series of connected short stories, for the narrator’s voice to veer around.
But Bookburners is what Gladstone describes as “a monster-of-the-week serial” in the mode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or The X-Files, “where every week there’s some core supernatural issue to be resolved.” Within the monster-of-the-week format, there’s more leeway to swing between tones and voices from episode to episode.
Gladstone’s other serial, The Witch Who Came in From the Cold, has more of a prestige drama structure, like Breaking Bad: “There’s forward momentum,” Gladstone says, “but each episode will raise and answer its own questions.” Thus, the voice needs to be tighter and more consistent.
Tremontaine is now entering its fourth and final season, and Bookburners is in its third. In the meantime, Serial Box has begun to branch out into nonfiction with serials like 1776, a collaboration with the Associated Press. It currently has 16 serials in total, all of which are actively publishing or soon will be.
The overall approach seems a lot more logical and reasonable to me now than it did when I opened up the first season of Bookbinders without any idea of what I was looking at and tried to read it like a novel — but I also haven’t been able to read most of Serial Box’s serials all in one go. They seem to resist binge-reading.
But if the company is successful in its goal to become the HBO of serialized fiction, if serials become the go-to thing people read on their commutes and lunch breaks and at night before they fall asleep — if they are successful at flooding the market in five or 10 years, will the structure of that Bookburners galley still feel so intuitively strange to me? Or will it simply feel like the way we read now, and perhaps the way we will read for years in the future?
