[image description] Two images next to each other. On the left the characters Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy being read to by their mother Marmie in a Christmas setting. On the right, Jo, Beth, Meg and Amy gathered around their mother Marmie all looking into different directions.
One question listeners: are you a Jo, Amy, Beth, or Meg? This episode, we’re discussing characters in the 1994 and 2019 versions of Little Women, and diving deep into subtextual readings and fan interpretations.
We’ll discuss disability, autistic, and queer readings, and try to answer our question: is Little Women a ‘story for every generation’, and why is it so popular?

First broadcast in 2012, which British drama series is based on the memoirs by Jennifer Worth?
Based on the memoirs by Jennifer Worth, the British drama series 'Call the Midwife' first aired in 2012. Set in the impoverished East End of London in the 1950s and 1960s, the show captures the challenges and triumphs of midwifery, while also delving into the personal lives of the midwives themselves.
The series follows the story of Jenny Lee (played by Jessica Raine), a young midwife who works at Nonnatus House, a nursing convent in Poplar. Jenny quickly finds herself immersed in a world vastly different from her own, where poverty and hardship are a daily reality for the residents of the area.
As the midwives of Nonnatus House navigate their way through the trials and tribulations of their profession, they form deep bonds with the women they care for. Each episode showcases the unique stories of expectant mothers, highlighting the diverse range of experiences they face during pregnancy and childbirth.
The strength of 'Call the Midwife' lies not only in its compelling storytelling but also in its exceptional ensemble cast. Led by Jenny Agutter as Sister Julienne, the midwives of Nonnatus House are brought to life by a talented group of actresses, including Helen George as Trixie Franklin, Bryony Hannah as Cynthia Miller, and Laura Main as Shelagh Turner. Each character brings their own unique perspective and struggles to the story.

News: Maddie Morris’ shares their debut studio album ‘Skin’, an exploration of the intimate, hopeful, and political aspects of identity through whimsical acoustics
The acclaimed BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Musician and socially conscious songwriter Maddie Morris has been making a name for themselves since their 2020 debut. Channeling the warmth of traditional folk with acoustic, occasionally indie edgings and boundary pushing fluctuations, it’s clear that Maddie doesn’t hold themself within the lines of expectations, always seeking to craft original works alike nothing else. Recently commissioned by Rural Arts to explore LGBTQIA+ experiences through traditional music, Maddie has also collaborated with organisations such as Queer Folk, Esperance, and Trans Pride Brighton, showcasing a commitment to amplifying marginalised voices through her craft too.
Following on from their initial success with following EP ‘Upstream’ in 2022, Maddie now looks to share a debut album ‘Skin’, a new project that takes hold of contemporary issues while fostering inclusivity for all. Delving deep into the intimate, hopeful, and political aspects of identity, much of this body of work channels all-too raw emotion at the core of what Maddie has to deliver. They aren’t alone on this stunning piece either, featuring collaborations with outstanding artists and musical guests that include Archie Churchill-Moss, Belinda O’hooley, Bryony Griffith, George Sansome, Janice Burns, Kath Ord, and Matt Downer.
From the leading single ‘Marsha P Johnson’ alone, Maddie amplifies the most tender of words, at first intricately offering half gorgeously sung lines and half spoken-sung poetics. With strummed acoustic guitar turned finger-picked gentility, and the more hopeful undertones of piano keys and shaken percussion added along the way, it’s hard not to feel every ounce of growing emotion that isn’t just delivered through their all-too poignant words but their soundscape just as much. Some jarringly real lines pull you back from those haunting sonic paths though, hitting you when you least expect it with the incredibly heart-wrenching storytelling that sings: ‘ten years later I’m out protesting homophobes… maybe greenery would ease the burden of all of the queer children that nobody saves.’ Some momentary spoken word segments pull together the eclectic sound with another edge of individualism, not following the ‘guidelines’ of a typical song and yet blossoming all the more for it.
Further songs like ‘Cedar Swamp’ carry a much more upbeat, country-esque twang to their giddy palettes of sound, while others like ‘Wee Weaver’ are again atypical in instrumental development. They all hold one common theme at heart despite their journeying genres though, and that’s how gracefully - and sometimes brutally - Maddie intersects art and activism into one. Channeling some of the darker aspects of society and the pains of the world, Maddie’s writing still always ensures to emanates from hope rather than anger, taking listeners on a journey through queer joy, liberation, history, hope, and vulnerability.
Though you can always be promised tenderness in Maddie’s sound, the undertones are always shifting like the weather in the most mesmerising ways possible, and their debut album ‘Skin’ truly shows that off to a tee. For an artist with so many layers, we’d be surprised if something in Maddie’s discography didn’t resonate with you too, just make sure to check them out.

crash
Your eyes shot up from where you had been wrapped up in your current project of queuing up the perfect mixture of classic and new Panic! At the Disco songs—your best guess on what they’d play tonight to give Toni a much needed crash course on their discography.
Fresh Air (Sweet Pea x Reader, abandoned WIP)
tremble
He was not a virgin by any means, but hovering on top of her, his hands trembled, and he felt nervous for the first time in years.
Her eyes fluttered open, and she looked at him with a keen warmth, as if seeing his hesitancy for exactly what it was.
The Lucky Ones (Post-War!George Weasley x f!OC, WIP)
blush
"I think we met briefly at the World Cup," Bill commented shaking Wren's hand. Her breath caught slightly as she looked up at him, taking in his dragon fang earring and dark, Weird Sisters-esq clothes.
"Yeah, right," Wren nodded hoping she was successful in fighting back a blush.
The Fool (Fred Weasley x f!OC, future chapter of published work)
learn
For instance, tonight some frat guy decided to wear salmon shorts to a dive bar. If I had to guess, he’s the rare tourist/bro crossbreed; a brother from a southern chapter of a fraternity or a recent transplant who has yet to learn that people up north don’t wear colors.
Phantasmagoria (original work)
strange
"Oh yeah," Joaquin said, darting forward to shut the door before coming back to lead you deeper into his apartment. The TV was on and a strange piece of machinery sat next to a bottle of beer on the coffee table. Your eyes lingered on both as Joaquin cleaned papers off the other half of his couch to make room for you. "Do you want a beer?"
Mr. Fix-It (neighbor!Joaquin Torres x reader, WIP)
fly
"I'll have you know I'm more than just a pretty face," he remarked, taking a sip from his beer. "I also happen to fly planes."
