11/21/24.
Described by We Are Busy Bodies label head Eric Warner as a "found recording" more than a reissue, Stefan Gnys "Horizoning" is another absolute gem of previously unknown music (coming only a week after the post of Penny Carson Nichols).
Gnys (pronounced G’neesh) was a Hamilton, Ontario musician who recorded this album in April 1969 with his good friend David Van Duzen. He ordered 12 acetate copies of the full album (these recordings are taken directly from the acetate versions), and 300 7"s were made of Horizoning/Evangeline. That's it - Gnys went to unversity, got married and had a family.
Warner met Gnys daughter about 14 years ago, and now we finally get this album. The cover looks like some hokey recreation of either Bonanza or Big Valley. But the music has more in common with both The Moody Blues (Justin Hayward's vocals) and Love (think of both Arthur Lee and Bryan MacLean).

Decir que me gusta "Maybe the People Would Be the Times or Between Clark and Hilldale" de Arthur Lee es quedarme demasiado corto, me chifla.

The 60's are not that clear-cut at all. I mean, Love – the band, not the real thing – are probably the group that dealt with the complexities of the period thanks to them being not as successful as they should've ben and also thanks to them having a different perspective. Forever Changes, their masterpiece, serves as a warning, since Arthur Lee, their frontman, felt something was off with the flower power movement. Thus, the platter resembles a chronicle of someone who noticed how all hopes slipped away, yet that person still cherishes the memory of the emotions, which were promised by these hopes. I could be cheeky here and call Forever Changes one of the early examples of the famous Mark Fisher term, though that would have been too much.

Happy birthday Scottish actor Iain Robertson, born on May 27th 1981 in Glasgow.
Robertson grew up in a family of seven in a tenement in Govan. He held no thoughts of becoming an actor until a primary school teacher pointed out his talent for drama. Robertson has said: "growing up in Govan put fire in my belly, made me push harder and also appreciate the things that have come my way".
His acting training started at the Sylvia Young Theatre School and was still a pupil when he started working in the long running kids drama Grange Hill.
Back home in Scotland TV audiences through the acclaimed BBC Scotland film Small Faces. He wasted no time in following up on his success and movie fans next saw him opposite Jonny Lee Miller and Robert Carlyle in Plunkett And Macleane. Small screen outings include small roles in Silent Witness, Kavanagh QC and Rebus, but it was the wartime drama Band Of Brothers which significantly raised his profile.
I think a certain element among us will remember Iain Robertson as the second actor to play Gash Nesbit, son of our anti-hero Rab C.
Iain is currently on our screens as Stevie O'Hara in the Scottish soap River City.
By coincidence, Stevie O'Hara celebrated his birthday in River City last week turning a year older than Iain himself. In 2021 he appeared with Timothy Spall in the excellent wee independent film The Last Bus.
Iain is also known to audiences for his Scottish walking show 'Iain Robertson Rambles', where viewers can join him and Molly the Collie on his long distance walks around Scotland, series 3 aired earlier in 2023.
Iain was involved with the charity single and album Leave a Light On for the Trussell Trust and Help Musicians UK, along with Kevin McKidd, Celtic Woman's Mairead Carlin, Bryan Tolland of Del Amitri and many others to record the song of the same name.

Love - My Little Red Book (1966)
youtube
"Written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David for Manfred Mann in the fall of 1964, My Little Red Book was later made highly successful by Arthur Lee and his band Love; the bass line and guitar riff served as an inspiration for Syd Barrett, who later adapted it for Pink Floyd's Interstellar Overdrive." - Mike Munrows.

Album #87: “Forever Changes” by Love (1967)
Love come back swinging with a much sombre, darker, dare I say sinister affair.
this record featured more complex orchestrations than the previous Love album on this list, while also managing to feel slightly more restrained in some aspects (no 20-minute jam taking up a side of vinyl probably explains why it feels that way). from the get go this is a band who, while already feeling like mature musicians, suddenly feel like they’ve found a specific voice.
which is funny because apparently the band were falling apart behind the scenes. one of the main songwriters, Bryan Maclean, left the band once the record was done and the other songwriter, Arthur Lee, fired the rest of the band shortly after.
really liked the first side of this record, which comes in swinging hard. the second side was good, but didn’t grab me as hard. recommended.
