ROVA — The Circumference of Reason (ESP-Disk)
Tumblr media
The Circumference of Reason by ROVA Saxophone Quartet
Institution, meet institution. Originally founded in 1963, ESP-Disk has survived numerous travails, including the death of founder Bernard Stollman, and remains a significant champion of free jazz and other outside music. ROVA, which originally appended the words Saxophone Quartet to its name, has been around since 1978, and maintained stable membership since the late 1980s.
In recent decades, ROVA has often added extra players, who have enabled the group to tackle historically oriented projects, such as revisiting John Coltrane’s Ascension and Steve Lacy’s Saxophone Special. Not this time. Not only are baritone saxophonist Jon Raskin, tenor saxophonist Larry Ochs, soprano/tenor saxophonist Bruce Ackley, and alto/sopranino saxophonist Steve Adams the only musicians present; all save one of the album’s six tracks were generated in-house, and the one that wasn’t is a tribute to a fallen Bay Area fellow saxophonist who sometimes worked with ROVA and its members. In its bones, Glenn Spearman’s “Extrapolation of the Inevitable” is a bold jazz fanfare. But Larry Ochs’ arrangement translates it into a handy reminder of ROVA’s enduring knack for executing contrapuntal passages so complex that you’ll feel like someone sucked the air out of the room when they suddenly snap back into unison formation.
Adams penned the three original compositions. “The Enumeration” is also dedicated to Spearman, whose raw tenor toned is echoed at several points during its evolving progress. The title track requires precise shifts between exposed timbral strokes, intricate polylinear statements, and unvoiced exhalations. In its reserved exposition of a wide range of sounds, it brings to mind Roscoe Mitchell. “Xenophobia” applies a similarly precise technique to an exploded-view abstraction of Latin rhythms. And nearly half of the album is devoted to two performances of “NC 17,” a structured improvisation that reveals the quartet’s ability to obtain drastically different outcomes from a given set of materials. The first proceeds gently, with each player applying contrasting shades to a given lead voice. The second version is more forceful and intricate, but retains the impression of ongoing commentary.

Henry Kaiser Quartet Plays Steve Lacy at Piedmont Pianos
On an extraordinarily hot Saturday evening in Oakland, we and several others kept cool both physically and musically at Piedmont Pianos. The occasion was a concert of music by Steve Lacy, as interpreted by an ensemble organized by guitarist Henry Kaiser with saxophonist Bruce Ackley.
Steve Lacy is a visionary but often under appreciated musician in avant-garde jazz. He was a prolific composer especially in the 1970s with his sextet and is an influence on many of the musicians were regularly see and perform with. (You can see Jason Berry’s tribute comic to Steve Lacy in an earlier post.) Bruce Ackley and Henry Kaiser have long been interpreters of Lacy’s music. Ackley and other founding members of Rova shared a deep interest in Lacy, and connected with him in both Berkeley and Paris, ultimately recording their own album of his work in 1983. They teamed up with Kaiser for performances of Lacy’s Saxophone Special in the early 2000s and ultimately recorded the piece together with Kyle Bruckman. More recently, Kaiser and Ackley have put together a group to perform the music from The Wire, which included Tania Chen on piano, Danielle DeGruttola on cello, Andrea Centazzo on percussion, and Michael Manring on bass. The performance on this evening featured a subset of this group featuring Ackley, Kaiser, Chen, and DeGruttola.
The concert featured many pieces from The Wire as well as a few others, and demonstrated the breadth of Steve Lacy’s composition from the brightly melodic “Hemline” (dedicated to Janis Joplin) to the extremely percussive and avant-garde “The Owl” (dedicated to Anton Webern), which featured Tania Chen and Kaiser blending the extended acoustic techniques of their respective instruments.
Even at its most percussive and noisy, Lacy’s music is quite melodic and structured. Indeed, many of the pieces were intended as songs, specifically songs for the voice of Irene Aebi. The melodies often revolved around simple repeating motifs, as in “Bound” (dedicated to Irene Aebi). On some pieces, including “Deadline”, DeGruttola and Kaiser acted as a string-based rhythm section, providing a foundation for the soprano-sax to interpret the melody and the piano to fill the space in between. Other moments provided lush harmonies, with Kaiser playing long pitch-bent chords on guitar and Chen playing frenetic harmonic fragments on piano. The energy can be intense at times, but then slower and haunting as in “Clouds”. Although structured, there is a lot of room for improvisation in the music, and the ensemble had great on stage chemistry for listening and playing off of one another, leaving empty space, and allowing Lacy’s original ideas to come out even as the performers added their own. The performance also included the title track from The Wire, “Twain”, “Ecstasy” and more.
This was my first visit to Piedmont Pianos. It is a large, friendly, and inviting space, dedicated entirely to the piano. Many were rather impressive, both in terms of their quality as instruments as well as their sticker prices, including the gorgeous Fazioli grand that Tania Chen played for the concert. However, I found myself most captivated by this remake of a 1930s Bluthne PH Piano, which is a work of visual as well as sonic art.  It is based on a design by noted Danish architect and inventor Poul Henningsen.
We look forward to seeing more shows at Piedmont Pianos now that we have discovered it, and of course upcoming shows for all the musicians involved in this evening. Nor is this our last word on the music of Steve Lacy.
Henry Kaiser Quartet Plays Steve Lacy at Piedmont Pianos was originally published on CatSynth

BEOWULF cast spotlight: Bruce Ackley
Bruce Ackley puts the A in Rova:Arts. As a founding member, he's been playing with the group since their inception in 1978! We love the wisdom and experience that he brings to this project. Here are some of his thoughts about our production of BEOWULF. Why BEOWULF now? Bruce Ackley: The current political and social milieu lends itself to a story of epic proportions, for we are living in a time of epic challenges with high stakes, and what feels like odds against our humanity prevailing. And, from a personal perspective, this has been a time of enormous loss—loss of fellow artists, friends and family members, heroes, and loss of innocence and hope. The people of the Beowulf saga endured tremendous suffering as their communities are devastated, and their loved ones are murdered; Grendel, his mother and the dragon slayed in the final section of the story seem to represent the loss of something not quite tangible, but primordial and mysterious. Describe your experience of this collaborative process. How is it similar or different from past projects/ experiences? Bruce Ackley: The closest past collaborative experience was Rova’s project with inkBoat, The Glass Head (2006). We had the incredible luxury of taking the time necessary to create an imaginative dance-music-video performance from raw materials we created together. The difference with Beowulf is that we get to do the show 22 times; The Glass Head was performed once. So, we’ll have the opportunity to adjust, edit and refine Beowulf over the next month. Describe Beowulf in four words. Bruce Ackley: Brother, Other, Mother, Slave. Check back to learn more about our other collaborators and see Bruce live in our upcoming production of BEOWULF March 18-April 16. Tickets on sale now! http://www.weplayers.org/beowulf-2017Photo: Lauren Matley

Rova Saxophone Quartet and Life's Blood Trio at VAMP, Oakland
As 2018 draws to a close, we look back a recent show we saw at VAMP (vintage – art and music – for the people) in Oakland. It was the subject of our most recent CatSynth TV.
youtube
As one can see at the start of the video, it was pouring rain that night. And it did not let up for the entire evening. But that did not stop an intrepid collection of music lovers from settling into VAMP’s small and quirky space to hear two great ensembles.
Tumblr media
The venerable Rova Saxophone Quartet have been performing together for 40 years, so it’s not surprising that they have coalesced into a sound all their own. Each of the four members, Bruce Ackley, Steve Adams, Larry Ochs, and Jon Raskin, have their own character, but as a group they function as one instrument. This is true even during fast runs, as they did in the latter half of the set, and when various members drop out or “solo” for a section.
var quads_screen_width = document.body.clientWidth; if ( quads_screen_width >= 1140 ) { /* desktop monitors */ document.write('<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;width:600px;height:100px;" data-ad-client="pub-5176416568130778" data-ad-slot="2974773354" >'); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); }if ( quads_screen_width >= 1024 && quads_screen_width < 1140 ) { /* tablet landscape */ document.write('<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;width:600px;height:100px;" data-ad-client="pub-5176416568130778" data-ad-slot="2974773354" >'); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); }if ( quads_screen_width >= 768 && quads_screen_width < 1024 ) { /* tablet portrait */ document.write('<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;width:600px;height:100px;" data-ad-client="pub-5176416568130778" data-ad-slot="2974773354" >'); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); }if ( quads_screen_width < 768 ) { /* phone */ document.write('<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;width:600px;height:100px;" data-ad-client="pub-5176416568130778" data-ad-slot="2974773354" >'); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); }
Tumblr media
Rounding out the evening was the Life’s Blood Trio, led by Rent Romus (saxophones) and featuring Safa Shokrai on upright bass and Timothy Orr on drums. This is a version of the larger Life’s Blood Ensemble pared down to its essentials. But there is still a rich and full sound in the spartan setting, with the three members filling the full harmonic and textural space. Romus’ performance is always expressive and frenetic, filled with emotion. Shokrai played an amazing extended bass solo. Orr kept things grounded, including during a solo of his own.
Tumblr media
VAMP is a bit of a performance in an of itself, with its odd collection of items for sale and a record collection that requires one to sift through and look for surprises. They’ve been holding on, even as Oakland changes in myriad ways. We look forward to seeing more music there – and perhaps playing there again – in 2019
Rova Saxophone Quartet and Life’s Blood Trio at VAMP, Oakland was originally published on CatSynth

Yo
Just a short ad. I’m mostly looking for some Marvel M/M pairings, some of which may be considered rare. I don’t have any definite plots for any of these as I’m a huge advocate of plotting with a partner.
I like OOC chat, sharing memes and the like and saying ‘it’s them!!!’ is one of my favourite things. I’d like someone 18+ too. Quality not quantity but I’m going to clam up if I get one sentence as a response. I’m not looking for my partner to bulk up a reply by describing the shine of their shoes for ten paragraphs, I know that sometimes getting to the point is easier. Just no ‘He walks in and says hello’ type thing.
Right!
-Bruce/Thor
-Matt/Foggy
-Frank Castle/Bucky
-Frank/Matt
-Bruce/Loki
-Tony/Loki
-Venom/Eddie
A few other pairings I’d be interested in roleplaying outside of the Marvel fandom are;
-Naveed/Cory (Ackley Bridge)
-Matthew/Mary/Tom (Downton Abbey)
-Eggsy/Harry (Kingsman)
-Tahani/Eleanor (TGP)
-Jack Harkness/Ten (or 11) (DW)
My email is [email protected] and I’d be delighted to hear from you. Tell me a bit about yourself, what pairings you are interested in and any ideas you may have that you’d like to share. No pressure.

USA: Rova-Saxophone Diplomacy (Hathut Records 2019)
This release features live recordings from the historic 1983 tour of Russia, Latvia, and Romania signaled Rovas talent for musical diplomacy, a boon to whomever they have partnered with. Rova Saxophone Quartet is a San Francisco-based saxophone quartet formed in October 1977. The name ""Rova"" is an acronym formed from the last initials of the founding members: Jon Raskin, Larry Ochs, Andrew Voigt, and Bruce Ackley. When Voigt left in 1988, he was replaced by Steve Adams, but the group did not change the acronym. The quartet's music was inspired by a broad spectrum of influences, such as John Cage, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Anthony Braxton, Steve Lacy, Charles Ives, Edgard Varése, and Olivier Messiaen. Its debut album, Cinema Rovaté, was released by Metalanguage Records in 1978. Metalanguage was founded in 1978 by Henry Kaiser and Ochs. It showcased Rova as well as many independent artists and produced the Rova Arts Festival in 1980. Rova's tour of the Soviet Union in 1983 was filmed and shown on PBS. In 1985, it became a non-profit organization.

Big band music: Here’s who is keeping it alive in Bay Area - SJ Mercury News

Big band music: Here’s who is keeping it alive in Bay Area
Among musicians, many of whom like nothing better than swapping stories about their heroes, the Duke Ellington Orchestra was almost as famous for its feuds as its extraordinary music. In some cases, players in the same section didn’t speak to each other for years, though the cold front never seemed to interfere with the warmth of Ellington’s magisterial sound.
These days, there’s no room for grudges in jazz big bands, which are by necessity a labor of love. The persistence of these horn-laden aggregations and various improvisation-steeped large ensembles speaks to the enduring pleasures provided by the sumptuous and sometimes uproarious sonorities they can create, and the opportunity to hang with peers (and trade stories about other players).
“Horn players love playing in big bands,” says Tony Corman, who was a journeyman saxophonist before reinventing himself as a guitarist. Over the next week or so, many of the most creative large jazz ensembles from the Bay Area and beyond are performing on local stages, including Corman’s 17-piece Morechestra, which performs his bespoke compositions and arrangements Sunday afternoon at the Douglas Beach House with special guest vocalist Nicolas Bearde.
“Some of it has to do with what you grow up with,” Corman adds, speaking from the home he shares in Berkeley with his wife, Morechestra pianist Laura Klein. “I grew up in midcentury, and your base musical culture is formed before you even think about it. Every TV talk show had a big band. All the jingles were big band. ‘The Jetsons’ theme: big band. I breathed it in with everything else.”
Big bands may hit a sweet spot in the ears of baby boomers, but the appeal transcends generational niches. One of the most exciting recent developments on the Bay Area jazz scene is the emergence of the 17-piece Electric Squeezebox Orchestra, a band led by trumpeter Erik Jekabson (Berkeley High class of ’91). Drawn by the opportunity to work on a steady flow of new charts by some of the region’s best arrangers, a majority of the stellar Squeezebox players were born in the 1970s and 80s.
The group performs at the SFJazz Center Thursday Jan. 26 on a double bill with drummer Tommy Igoe’s Groove Conspiracy. Like Corman’s Morechestra, Jekabson’s Squeezebox often recruits vocalists as special guests, and when the band returns to its regular Sunday gig at Doc’s Lab in North Beach, it’ll be joined by a succession of arresting artists, including poet/percussionist Avotcja (Feb. 12), vocalist Madeline Eastman (Feb. 26) and vocalist Kellye Gray (March 5).
But swinging (or in Igoe’s case, grooving) isn’t the only large ensemble tradition in jazz. SFJazz also presents Rova Saxophone Quartet on Sunday Jan. 29 exploring two distinct improvisational modes that depend less on arrangements and traditional instrumental sections than spontaneous decision making, group improvisation and cueing.
The program features “No Favorites,” a work that proceeds via real-time conducted improvisation, or conduction, developed by the late Butch Morris (a piece documented on Rova’s recent New World Records album of the same name). Saxophonists Larry Ochs, Steve Adams, Jon Raskin and Bruce Ackley will be joined by seven other musicians, including guitarist John Schott and violinist Tara Flandreau, with Gino Robair standing in for Morris as conductor.
The other half of the program is a plugged-in rendition of John Coltrane’s epochal 1966 album “Ascension,” a spiritually charged landmark that Rova has been grappling with for decades. Widely controversial at the time for its break from traditional jazz conventions, the 40-minute piece climbs to ecstatic heights from a simple five-note theme referencing the “Acknowledgement” section of “A Love Supreme.”
Featuring a 12-piece ensemble inspired by the doubled instrumentation deployed by Coltrane, but with different instruments, Rova’s group includes electric guitarists Ava Mendoza and Trey Spruance, trumpeters Darren Johnston and Tom Djll and Zeena Parkins on electric harp.
While conduction and unscripted real-time composition not set to a swing pulse are practices once considered avant garde, they are “just part of the tradition now,” Ochs says. “With Butch’s conduction, the forms are often a little less familiar to an average jazz person, but ‘Ascension’ is this beautiful piece.
