So, Wildbow pretty famously retconned Browbeat to death because he got sick of fan jokes about every new character secretly being Browbeat under a new identity. I've got mixed thoughts on that.
Unfortunately for all, my de facto reaction to that kind of meta-level contrarian stunt is "Power Move TBH," even if it was broadly comorbid with a proximity to the fandom that kind of blew out Ward's kneecaps with a .50 cal. Overlooking the fact that I think it was really sincerely funny, there's an argument to be made that it trims the fat; adding an additional heroic casualty for a grand total of seven out of twenty two named heroes operating in Brockton Bay at the time of arc 8. Browbeat is also specifically an independent hero who was headhunted for the Wards relatively soon after his debut- a distinct dynamic from the other wards who get pulverized, from the superheroic family business of New Wave, or the adult professional superheroes who bite it. This is a very Taylor shaped guy, the same kind of just-starting-out teenaged cape with an uncertain future. Him getting unceremoniously pulverized for the bad luck of having a front-line power therefore presents a bit of a "there but for the grace of god" moment for Skitter, if you choose to look at it like that. This is the kind of thing an editor would probably make him do anyway, if he wasn't cut entirely. But the thing is that I am kind of attached to the original outcome for Browbeat, which is that he dips. I think it actually adds some subtle verisimilitude to the story. The number of heroes we actually see is significantly lower than the alluded-to headcount in the early arcs; more indie heroes are alluded to then ever actually appear, and a combination of Leviathan casualties and departure during the ensuing civilian exodus is usually how I've seen that discrepancy squared. But it hits better if a named character cuts and runs. In the story as currently written, every hero who lives, remains in Brockton Bay to try and hold the line. I kind of liked the version of the story where that wasn't the case, where you can infer that at least one of these teenagers went, you know what, I'm not so completely committed to heroic altruism at the age of 16 that I'm gonna hang around to do it in a town without running water, I'm going to pursue a less horrible gig elsewhere. That's not really a thing that happens too often in Big-two comics, and if it were to happen it would likely be painted as a notable departure from expectations. But one of Worm's major themes is that unlike in the comics, there's a gigantic spread of motivations and personality types amongst the officially designated heroes, and it's a nice reminder that all those different personality types are going to have different thresholds for throwing in the towel and moving on to greener pastures. Or it was, until he just died instead

Browbeat
So I’ve just realised that out of all of the Worm Fanfics I’ve read that include the Brockton Bay Wards only one of them include Browbeat in any capacity.
Just checked his wiki and even that needs work, but the guy has Biokinesis that let’s him turn into an adonis which honestly reminds of Allmight from MHA, so you’d think that he’d have some sort of niche with people.
.....Like, did everybody just forget the guy who can go toe to toe with Rachel’s dogs and who was one of the three Wards to die fighting Leviathan? As far as I can see he’s the only Ward whose actual name we don’t know

they forgot to make him a portrait (Sentinel 9.3)
Ok because it keeps getting auto removed from the subreddit, I'll just post it here then.
So, Browbeat originally survived Leviathan, but was retconned into dying because of the Stranger 12 memes. We all know this part.
But.
On kind of a reread to keep pace with livereads, and I noticed this passage in Sentinel 9.5:
These are, I would guess, memorials of the Wards that died during Leviathan.
There are two memorials. The number of dead Wards, now, retcon taken into account, is three.
I'm sure you can see the problem here.

"Picard season 3 was the perfect end to the TNG era!"
How the TNG era begins: Humans prove their worth on the galactic stage by solving a space mystery, choosing reason over violence, and liberating a captive alien godling.
How the TNG era ends: The crew get together to do a Death Star trench run on a Borg cube, annihilating an entire species.
#star trek picard#I wouldn't hate this season half as much if the entire Internet didn't seem intent on browbeating me into thinking that it was good.#the last generation

This is not a CamChase post, but, I actually do want to talk about something I feel is deeply underappreciated by fandom, which is: Cameron and Chase are actually friends.
Long before they ever sleep together, all the way back in early S1. The two of them are almost always shown to get along! Cameron sticks up for Chase the entire Vogler arc, refusing (incorrectly) to believe he would rat, or that he should be fired. Chase, noted apathetic, actually tends to go out of his way to compliment or stick up for Cameron in early episodes: he passes along her good ideas to House (Maternity), defends her from House's criticism (Detox), and compliments her good ideas in Pilot and DNR, something he notable never does once for Foreman.
They get along! They have a joking conversation about lab results and House and Foreman's fight in Socratic Method. In Paternity Chase makes a sort of borderline inappropriate joke that the patient should take his mind off his pain by admiring Cameron's boobs; Cameron laughs instead of getting offended. In Sports Medicine, he teases her about her upcoming date with House. In Hunting, before the meth hookup, Chase is openly worried about her and asks Cameron to drinks; he even offers to do extra work so she can take it easy! Chase! The laziest man alive!
But to me, the most telling example is in in Mob Rules. We're at the start of the Hameron arc, and last episode Cameron asked House if he liked her, which he didn't answer either way. And what does Cameron do? She talks to Chase about it.
CAMERON: Did House seem weird to you? CHASE: Are you expecting him to be weird? CAMERON: We spoke about how we felt. CHASE: You told him you liked him? CAMERON: No, of course not. CHASE: What are you talking about, then? CAMERON: I asked him if he liked me. CHASE: Why would you do that? CAMERON: Because… I like him.
They're friends! Chase reacts with zero surprise that Cameron likes House; she goes to him for advice in a moment she's feeling vulnerable. He already knows she likes House, Cameron wants his opinion. This is a conversation between friends.
In fact, this happens a few times. Notably, Cameron tries very hard to get Chase to open up to her in Cursed:
CAMERON: You know, parents are never as bad as kids think they are. CHASE: You like my dad so much, ask him out. CAMERON: [joking] I’d make an excellent step-mom, I’m very lenient. [pause] He’s your father, you never see him, and he’s here. Unless he’s done some unspeakable thing, you should lighten up. CHASE: Right, thanks for the tip.
And, yeah, she clearly doesn't get it, but she's trying! She's joking around, she cares. Cameron tries to get Chase's advice in Sleeping Dogs Lie, she commiserates with him in Deception, she unilaterally defends Chase in The Mistake. They joke around sometimes, she confides in Chase when the TB guy in TB or Not TB asks her out: Cameron goes to Chase for relationship advice! More than once!
These are conversations that do not happen with other characters: Cameron and Foreman indicate they respect one another medically, but never have personal conversations; Chase doesn't open up to anyone, period. But whenever Cameron is looking for advice or to share romantic gossip… she goes to Chase. And Chase, for his part, likes to tease her (and she him: sex can kill you was 1000% Cameron trolling him), but honestly tends to be… if not automatically sympathetic, he listens, he jokes about TB Guy, he knows about her crush on House and treats it like old news. They're! Friends! I would actually argue this is probably the main reason Cameron goes to him when she decides she wants casual sex: Chase is someone she, in fact, likes. Even if that liking is not romantic. (Even the btw we should have sex, I will never love you is uh. Unless you are totally deranged that is not how you approach a fwb situation. Unless you. You know. Know Chase isn't gonna be offended because he already knows you're friends and aren't trying to drag him.)
And this actually does continue once they do date, btw. They're constantly hanging out. Chase spends entire episodes of S5 just hanging out in the ER. He still likes to tease her (Whatever it Takes), she inexplicably/hilariously still ropes him into her House drama (Ugly), but I can count on one hand the number of times they bicker or are unkind and mean it. They are friends! They always were friends. And that was the case long before they ever hooked up. In an AU where they never dated, they would still be friends. Their (romantic) relationship was badly written, no one likes it, I get it. But honestly I really do love how well they got along in S1-2, and I wish people appreciated that friendship more.
#in this fandom people will make ships out of anything#say chase and 13 are best friends based on one and a half episodes#(i'm people btw.))#but cameron and chase legit were work friends for years before hooking up and people are like nooooo doesn't exist#no she hated him. no she only pity dated him because he browbeat her. no she never liked him.#maybe slash probably dating was a mistake but they were still FRIENDS FIRST#also i'm not trying to shade foreman or those friendships but for real#these are not conversations either of them ever have with him#which makes it even more striking how often cameron DOES turn to chase to commiserate or ask relationship advice#it really is not something she does with anyone else#ugh i get so mad#the camchase friendship is the true victim of the camchase ship#malpractice posting#allison cameron#robert chase

The Dragonborn does not speak at the council, for all the trouble she went to arranging it.
She sits in a straight-backed chair at the head of the table, her sword in its scabbard resting against the stone. (She was the only one permitted to carry a weapon into the assembly.) Lydia, her sharp-faced housecarl, is seated to her left.
It’s the Dragonborn’s council, for all intents and purposes – it may not have been her idea, but it was she who petitioned for it, persuading Arngeir and then the war-leaders and the dignitaries they dragged with them. It was for her sake alone (Dragonborn, Ysmir, legend come to life) that some agreed to attend at all.
But when the council finally begins, kings and warriors crowded around the long stone table, she is silent. An argument begins immediately, Ulfric objecting to Thalmor presence within the negotiations and Tullius objecting to his objection, and it splinters off into something thorny and onerous. It takes half an hour for discussion to begin properly – and then someone says something and they’re off again, everyone around the table coiled tight and wary, and the Dragonborn stares into the middle distance and offers no thoughts.
It doesn’t stop, the talk of trading holds like game pieces and demands that the armies’ leaders be compensated for massacres that never touched them. Arngeir tries to quiet them, and Esbern’s desperate passion riles them up, and when half of the room has leapt to its feet and voices echo off High Hrothgar’s sacred, watching stones, the Dragonborn finally speaks –
Which is to say, she claps her hands over her ears and spits a Word that rips the voices from their lips and the room is finally, mercifully silent.
Her housecarl, the only one who does not seem startled by this, places a hand on the back of her chair and says, “Thane?”
The Dragonborn uncurls, removes her hands from her head, lays them flat on the table.
“I don’t understand,” she says, slow, as though the words are weighed down. She isn’t looking into the middle distance; her eyes shift from face to face like she is trying to meet everyone’s gaze at once.
Galmar Stone-fist, standing by a chair to her right, claws at his fur-lined collar. “We have –”
“Let the Dragonborn speak,” Lydia interrupts, voice and eyes steely. Galmar’s face twists, but he falls silent.
The Dragonborn presses her hands into the stone tabletop.
“Do you believe,” she says, “that the dragons will leave your side alone?”
On the other side of the table, General Tullius raises a sceptical brow. He leans back into his chair. “If you have a point, then make it. We don’t have time for more nonsense.”
Her eyes snap to him. Lydia repeats, “Let her speak.”
The Dragonborn holds up a hand.
“Do you believe,” she enunciates carefully, “that the dragons care anything for your war? None of this matters.”
“On the contrary –”
“Alduin will tear your cities down,” she tells them. Her eyes are eerie dark as holes too deep to track, and even her housecarl is staring at her now. “Only I can stop it. Until you get out of my way, you are fighting over rubble.”
There is, again, silence. Arngeir is visibly thankful for the reprieve; High Hrothgar’s walls, unused as they are to such uproar, can once again, if briefly, know peace.
Ulfric stood up sometime in the yelling; he has not sat back down. He is leaning a little on the stone back of his chair as he says, “You called us here in hopes of a ceasefire, Dragonborn. Truces aren’t made of empty air. Terms have to be negotiated.”
The Dragonborn stares him down. Her palms remain flat on the table; her sword stays resting against her chair.
“But you aren’t negotiating with him,” she says, the words still heavy, still slow. “You’re negotiating terms with me.”
There is a pause. The watchful stones soak in the silence.
“With you,” the Legate replies.
The Dragonborn’s face is blank. “If you truce, I will fight Alduin.” She speaks the weighed-down words as though they are the most natural thing in the world. “If you don’t, I won’t. Your cities will fall as Helgen, and you will die afraid. Those are my terms.”
Lydia places a hand, palm up, on the table. The Dragonborn covers it with her own, mimicking the pose of the wrist, the splay of the fingers.
“Now,” the Dragonborn announces, her voice a laggard echo of Arngeir’s opening speech, “who would like to begin the negotiations?”
(There is no shouting during the rest of the peace council.)
#the rest of the council consists of the dragonborn just repeating the same thing over and over#browbeating skyrim's most powerful political players into doing what she wants by not giving an inch. icon#also I'm going to name this piece a song lyric bc a) the lyric partly inspired it and b) I do what I want#anyway. hope you enjoy it!#oc tag#dragonborn#skyrim#the elder scrolls#my writing#fay writes#tes#microfic#lydia#arngeir#ulfric stormcloak#general tullius#legate rikke#galmar stone fist#esbern#(too many gotdamn characters in here)#season unending#tesblr#FUN FACT: this piece is 777 words#a delightful coincidence

Aggressive tribalism and doubling down on a broken system aside, it's always struck me as a bit arrogant that the "vote blue no matter who" crowd attributes every non-vote/third-party vote to someone who would otherwise support the Dem's chosen candidate but got cold feet at the last minute. My guy, you keep banging on that "lesser of two evils" drum all you want, but I don't think you're gonna like the outcome if you ever successfully convince a lot of the people who voted third party in 2020.
#on a related note it's kind of funny how leading up to the election it was ''EVERY VOTE NOT FOR BIDEN IS A VOTE FOR TRUMP''#but I saw comparatively little vitriol from the right toward third parties and independents after the election#different sorts of arrogance I guess#one side was convinced their candidate was unelectable but that they could browbeat people into supporting him anyway#the other that their candidate was too big to fail and so the only possible explanation was that the whole thing was rigged
