SPECIAL DELIVERY: Navigant CU/RIIL "prize patrol" announces Financial Trivia Challenge winners
Navigant Credit Union delivering $10K in grants & scholarships to RIIL schools
Tumblr media
March 22, 2025
Representatives from the Rhode Island Interscholastic League and Navigant Credit Union went out on a "prize patrol" Wednesday morning, traveling from Pawtucket to North Providence to Johnston to present checks to the top performing students and schools in the inaugural Financial Trivia Challenge.

Open to RIIL-member high school and middle school students, the Financial Trivia Challenge, sponsored by Navigant Credit Union, was a fun way for students to test their financial literacy through a virtual program. From February 1st to March 17th, participants could log into the app and answer as many financial trivia questions as possible within 2 minutes. Students were welcome to take the challenge as many times as they wished to try and improve their score, while comparing their results with others from across the state.
More than 1,000 students from 29 cities and towns participated in the challenge over the last month and a half.
Amanda LaRose, Navigant Credit Union’s Assistant Vice President of Financial Education, visited four schools with RIIL representatives on Wednesday to begin delivering some of the $10,000 in scholarships and grants that Navigant Credit Union is awarding to the top performing students and participating schools.
Their first stop was William E. Tolman Senior High School, where they briefly interrupted Robert D’Arezzo’s DECA class to inform senior Jovan Santos that he had finished with the highest score among high school students across the state. LaRose presented Santos with a ceremonial check for $500, which he said he plans to invest to help assist him with paying for college.

Amanda LaRose of Navigant CU congratulations Juan Santos on being the top high school scorer in the Financial Trivia Challenge as Tolman DECA teacher Robert D'Arezzo looks on.
Santos, who took the challenge more than 60 times, said he was very well equipped to answer the questions, thanks to the many courses he has taken with D’Arezzo at Tolman. Bound for Roger Williams University in the fall, he plans to study either engineering or business.

“The RIIL is proud to partner with organizations that provide educational resources and financial support to our member schools,” said RIIL Executive Director Mike Lunney. “We are thankful to Navigant Credit Union for supporting this educational initiative and for providing a fun way for students to develop their financial literacy, which is such an important life skill.”
Next LaRose and the RIIL team stopped by Dr. E.A. Ricci Middle School in North Providence to congratulate the students there for finishing first in participation among middle schools with 66 students registered for the Financial Trivia Challenge.
Tumblr media
“It’s all about building habits when they’re younger,” said math intervention teacher Audra Cornell, who co-teaches the Ricci students with math teacher Brittany Smith. “So if they can take something away from it as a middle schooler, it will hopefully carry with them when they get their first job.”
After Ricci, it was on to Nicholas A. Ferri Middle School to surprise eighth grader Brayden Lariviere during his science class with the news that he had finished with the highest score among Rhode Island middle school students. Lariviere said he plans to save the $500 scholarship he is receiving for college and at this point thinks he will pursue a degree in business management.

In addition to Santos and Lariviere, 32 other students from across the state will receive smaller scholarship checks for finishing among the leading scorers.
The prize patrol made one final stop at Johnston Senior High School to notify the school it had received the top prize for having the highest participation among high schools with 223 students registered for the challenge.
Business Department chair Linda Nixon and her fellow business teachers, Debra Smyth and Michael Iafrate, incorporated the challenge into their students’ daily classes.
“It’s real life skills,” Smyth said. “They’re going to use them every day – car insurance, phone bills – especially juniors and seniors that are driving. They’re graduating, going to college. They’re going to have student loans . . . all of this encompasses financial literacy, and it clicks in their head now because they’re older.”

Posing for a picture with a ceremonial check at Johnston Senior High School are RIIL Executive Director Mike Lunney, JHS principal Matt Velino, teachers Michael Iafrate, Linda Nixon and Debra Smyth, Johnston superintendent Dr. Bernie DiLullo and Navigant CU's Amanda LaRose.
Johnston and Ricci are each receiving $1,600 grants, which include $1,000 for placing first in their divisions, along with added incentive money for being among the quickest schools to register students for the challenge. Tolman, Lincoln, Scituate, Barrington, Cranston West and Narragansett High Schools will be receiving smaller grants for registering students early, as well.
As a financial educator for Navigant, LaRose travels to nonprofit organizations, community groups and schools ranging from elementary all the way up to college providing free financial literacy classes.
Heading to Central Falls right after the presentations to deliver one of her programs, LaRose said she teaches all of the basics: “Banking 101, credit, borrowing, budgeting. Those are the tools that we really at Navigant strive to ensure that our members have and that the community has.”
Navigant suggests that students also can continue learning about personal finance with the Navigant Credit Union Embark Account, a digital-focused, no-fees account, made for self-made teens. More information on this available at: https://navigantcu.org/personal/embark-account/

RAINDROPS on noses and other favourite things: Maria (Brittany Smith), surrounded by the von Trapp children, in The Sound of Music directed by Steven Stead. Photograph by Nardus Engelbrecht. IN OUR WORLD of cynicism and hate, of virulent social media and rapidly shifting technology, you may find it hard to believe that Rodgers and Hammerstein’s great 1959 musical The Sound of Music is a total…
