Idolizing Imperfection: The Ancient Allusions of 'Midas Touch' - KISS OF LIFE (an essay)

I have missed writing kpop essays so much and after watching the new Kiss of Life MV, I couldn't resist doing a scene by scene (with some lyrics) breakdown of the allusions to ancient mythology - (there are lots of other modern references, especially to Britney Spears, but the ancient ones are what I will be focusing on here, believe me there is more than enough to talk about.) I don't have any official qualifications surrounding this field (yet), but I am studying classical civilization and roman literature for a qualification, and I have a long time obsession with Greek mythology especially. Obviously all of these are my interpretations, this is not a definite guide to what exactly the creative direction team at S2 Ent. were thinking about for this comeback, and if you think I missed something or have a different interpretation of one of the scenes, please let me know in the reblogs/comments.

Let’s begin with the title of the track, ‘Midas Touch’. It references the Greek myth of King Midas, who (according to Ovid’s ‘Metamorphoses’) after winning the favour of the god Dionysus, was granted any wish he desired. Midas chose the ability to make everything he touched turn into gold, a wish driven by greed. Midas revelled in his new found powers, but the problems arose when he realised that all food he touched would be turned to gold too - he had condemned himself to starve to death. The myth is essentially a cautionary tale about the effects of greed; Midas is a tragic hero that brought about his own suffering due to his hamartia (tragic flaw) - his blessing becomes his curse. Today, having a ‘midas touch’ means that everything you are involved with is successful, but the main association of Midas with greed still remains. In the context of the song, KOL are saying that a relationship with them, although destined to end in tragedy, would be worth it for the ‘gold’ they can bring - “위험할수록 재밌잖아” (“The more dangerous it is, the more fun it is”).  Midas may have died a tragic death, but his time alive was quite literally golden. Still, it feels slightly odd that KOL are associating themselves with someone so flawed - an idol should be the image of perfection, and in this way, the meaning of the song becomes quite subversive on a meta level. Keep this interpretation in the back of your mind, we will return to it later.

Within the music video itself, each of the four members are given solo scenes that I believe allude to different women of Greek mythology. Julie is first, depicted lying on a blush pink velvet heart with gold embellishments, shell and heart shaped boxes littered around her. The composition of the framing, as well as the beach imagery seems to allude to Boticelli’s ‘The Birth of Venus’, linking Julie with Aphrodite/Venus, the goddess of love. In Greek mythology, Aphrodite is seen as beautiful beyond compare, but is also often characterised as highly vain and self absorbed. After hearing that some Greeks had begun to worship the ludicrously beautiful mortal woman Psyche instead of her, (and also out of protection of her son Eros to whom Psyche was married), she sent Psyche on a series of impossible trials designed to kill her, so she could remain the most beautiful. Once again, KOL compare themselves to people in the ancient world who were famously flawed.

Natty is seen next, intertwined with glittering spider webs. This is perhaps a reference to the tale of Arachne, a mortal woman who was highly skilled at weaving. She boasted that her skills were greater than Athena herself, the goddess of handicraft (and many other things), and Athena transformed her into a spider as punishment for her hubris (excessive pride). Like the tale of King Midas, Arachne’s story also centres around a fatal flaw bringing your own downfall, and like Midas and Aphrodite, Arachne is not typically remembered fondly within Greek Mythology canon.

Perched on a half dress, half throne that resembles a peacock, Belle is seen next. Originally I wasn’t certain who was being referenced here, but after some research I believe it may be Hera, although if you have another interpretation here I would love to hear it. Hera, the goddess of marriage and fertility, queen of the gods, and wife to Zeus, is affiliated with peacocks as they are one of her sacred animals, and are said to pull her chariot like horses. Hera is also, like Aphrodite, a goddess often portrayed in a negative light in mythology, repeatedly characterised as jealous and spiteful. A famous example of this is when Hera sent two snakes to strangle Heracles/Hercules, the illegitimate son of her husband Zeus, out of spite and jealousy for the boy’s mortal mother. Whether Hera had a right to be annoyed at her husband’s repeated adultery is another discussion, but generally speaking, when Hera is in a myth, she is often the villain.

Finally, we see Haneul, perched upon a corinthian style column (we love a greek column) surrounded by severed heads on spikes, a clearly war ridden scene. This is the allusion I am the least confident about, but I think perhaps she is supposed to be Helen of Troy? Helen is famous for being the catalyst for the Trojan War (perhaps this is the war scene she sits within?), she is the ‘face that launched a thousand ships’. Depending on the source, Helen is either a victim, kidnapped by the Trojan prince Paris, or she was seduced and went willingly, abandoning her Greek husband King Menelaus. The second seems to be the accepted narrative among many Roman authors, with writers such as Martial (in Epigrams 1.62) portraying her as the polar opposite of Penelope, who was seen as the image of loyalty. As a result, Helen is commonly portrayed as disloyal and unfaithful, the opposite of what an ideal woman in the ancient world was supposed to act like.

In their group scenes, there is also SO MUCH Medusa imagery - with snakes crawling all over their faces and hissing at the camera, and half broken stone statues littered here and there. As I am sure you are probably aware, Medusa is very much a villain in the myths she is depicted in, and despite modern reevaluations of her story (that I agree with) portraying her as a victim, in the primary sources, she is essentially an evil monster for Perseus to destroy - her death marks Perseus’s ascension to hero status.

So why oh why are KOL comparing themselves to figures so flawed? In their previous releases, especially their first comeback with ‘Bad News’, the girls are depicted trying to fix injustices in society - they expose corruption in corporations, they combat casual misogyny and sexual harassment, and they call out bullying and abuse. In ‘Midas Touch’ I believe they continue their addressing of injustices and double standards, this time with a focus on the idol industry, their own stomping ground. In the kpop industry, idols are expected to be perfect in every way - beautiful, highly skilled, never controversial, and loyal to their fans. Should an idol fail to uphold these impossible standards, they are relentlessly punished, especially if the idol is a woman. Last month, Karina’s earnest apology to ‘fans’  for falling in love exposed how ludicrous the standards are to the world, and other idols like Sakura, Wonyoung, and Jennie, continue to get bullied on a daily basis for not meeting all of the bars the industry sets them. A kpop idol should be talented, but never show off, they should be beautiful and care about their looks but never be vain, confident but never egotistical, and driven by passion, not the desire for fame and money. It’s all fucking impossible, especially when what constitutes being called the second traits is utterly arbitrary and depends on how many people woke up on stan twitter and decided they didn’t like you that day. In ‘Midas Touch’ KOL calls this out by openly depicting themselves with the traits that kpop stans hate - Julie is Aphrodite, beautiful but vain, Natty is Arachne, talented but boastful, Belle is Hera, confident but jealous, Haneul is Helen, influential but disloyal, and they all are Midas, spurred on by greed instead of passion. They recognise that these accusations are unavoidable, and by reclaiming the imagery of these symbols of undesirable traits, they call out and reject the standards the idol industry places upon them. Like Medusa, they may be seen by many fans as a villain, a hurdle for their favourite groups that have more promotion and budget to overcome on their way to the top, but in actuality, they are victims of an industry desperate to mould them into products to be bought and sold. I’ve seen lots of discussion online about what KISS OF LIFE’s concept is, as it seems to vary every comeback, but after ‘Midas Touch’ I am led to believe that their concept is rebellion, against society, idol culture, and the things they deem as wrong in the world. Other groups have  done concepts similar in the past, such as LOONA in ‘Butterfly’ (you really thought I wasn’t going to bring them up at some point?? Are you new here??) but KOL is doing it explicitly, and consistently, and to me, that's very exciting. The kpop industry is ever changing, and with the foundations of the new 5th generation being established as we speak, perhaps KOL could cause it to change for the better. In summary, I am SO excited to see what they do next.

That honestly took a turn I wasn’t fully expecting at the end, but I hope you enjoyed regardless - I didn’t really talk about the actual song here, but I fucking loved it, and my full review will be part of my April monthly roundup - see previous installments on my masterlist. Happy birthday Lena Martell, born May 15th 1940 in Possilpark, Glasgow.

Born Helena Thomson, she began singing at the age of 11 with her eldest brother’s band. After his untimely death, Martell decided to pursue a career in music as a tribute.

Her rising popularity among the easy listening elite allowed for the release of Lena’s Music Album in 1979. The record spawned a number one hit, One Day at a Time, written by Kris Kristofferson and Marijohn Wilkin, it helped launch Lena’s career. Producer and bandleader George Elrick and Martell continued to release records throughout the 1980s, she recorded more than 30 albums, some of which went silver, gold and platinum, including By Request, Beautiful Sunday , Love Songs, and Feelings, before her retirement in the early ‘90s, for a decade Lena also had her own Saturday night BBC TV show with over 12 million viewers. Lena worked with Liza Minnelli and understudied for Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl on Broadway.

She has been through a lot in the years since her hey day, She almost lost her voice with cancerous nodes, has had a double mastectomy, had two nervous breakdowns and the death of her mum after caring for her through the ravages of Alzheimer’s, she has also had surgery to replace a valve in her heart, and in March 2008 underwent a triple heart bypass operation- Lena is really one of life’s survivors.

In 2004, her comeback CD My Homeland outsold Kylie Minogue and Britney Spears in Scottish record shops and went gold.

In 2012 she celebrated 50 years in show business with a tour that kicked off in Glasgow. Sean Connery quoted at the Edinburgh Festival in 2004; “The best singer not to record a Bond soundtrack was Lena Martell”

JUSTIN Timberlake and Britney Spears' "feud" is non-existent and the trauma over her abortion has been resolved privately.

Timberlake apologized to his ex-pop superstar partner and they are now "fine," his NYSNC bandmate Lance Bass revealed in an exclusive interview with The U.S. Sun.

Bass is a friend to both Britney and bandmate and long-term pal Justin.

Bass says that Britney addressed the break up in the book to set her record straight on that split, but "that was the past”.

He insists that while publicly it appears Spears remains upset, seemingly through her social media posts, “They don't care. They are good.”

Speaking exclusively on camera, at the annual Environmental Media Association Awards in LA, Bass said that the deeply personal issues between the couple was not even a "fight".

The ex-NSYNC star feels that his friends’ personal woes were "just life".

Bass, 44, also added that Britney fans' successful push of her single Selfish ahead of Timberlake's new single of the same name on the iTunes Charts is "good for everyone".

Currently, some Spears’ fans continue to attack her ex-partner following her memoir heartbreak of him wanting an abortion and cheating allegations in 2001.

When asked how the famous couple solve their differences, Bass declared: “Well, the problem is they've already sorted it out and everyone just forgets.

“No, they are fine. They support each other. They love each other in their own ways.

“He has apologized. She is amazing. It's just like everyone, this has happened already.

“So I think just people like to keep fights going, but look at the people that are in the fight. They don't care. They're good.”

Spears claimed in her memoir, the media portrayed her as “a harlot who’d broken the heart of America’s golden boy," while she was really “comatose in Louisiana” as he was “happily running around Hollywood”.

Justin has not made any public comment about Spears’ claims, but did tell fans at his Vegas gig in December “no disrespect” before playing Cry Me a River - a tune penned about her cheating on him.

Hours later she appeared to fire back on Instagram: “I never mentioned how I beat him in basketball and he would cry... no disrespect.”

”The fans are incredible. They keep us alive, but they've been with us since the last NSYNC tour.

“So it's like we've never felt like they've left us at all. So everything that I've ever done, I felt that they were there.

"They've always shown up for me in every individual project I've done.

"When we get together as a group, it is a different thing.

“It's just this kind of craziness that happens and it's fun.

K/DA Lore

A while ago I impulsively wrote an entire series of lore headcanons for the KDA girl group. It started off with a pre popstar Ahri and I went from there.

I took inspiration from the KDA comics, the bios of the connected skins (popstar ahri) the official websites and the dev interviews etc to form my personal take on kda's story.

So here it is. I'll be posting in parts. Starting with...Ahri.

Ever since she was a little girl Ahri would post homemade performance videos of her singing and playing either the *guitar or piano. After gaining a small following the indie singer went on to entering cover contests when her cover for *"tell me your wish" blew up. That's when talent scouts from (record label) discovered the gumiho and offered to write her a contract. In *2013 Ahri the popstar would release her first hit album and go on her spirit rush tour around America. It was 2015 and Ahri would had go on to sign 2 more annual contracts and was in the production of her third album when she suddenly broke her contract with (record label) and wouldn't return to the music industry until 2018 with K/DA'S hit POPSTARS with another comeback in 2020.

*Ahris use in guitar and piano comes from the kda comics and her twitter campaign: 1 2 3

*"Tell me your wish" is a reference to her popstar Ahri skin which was based of the costumes from this music video. I imagine her doing an acoustic guitar cover of this song for the contest entry.

*2013 is the year popstar Ahri released on lol.

*Ahri's story is inspired by the indie youtuber to popstar trope and the teen popstar.

*Real life celebrities that influenced my take on Ahri include: Taylor Swift and Britney Spears.

*Ahri is Korean in this AU but posted her videos on to American Youtube because she was inspired by both western and Korean pop and is how an American record label discovered her.

*Ahri is a Gumiho/Nine tailed fox from the Korean folklore. As to how a supernatural creature can exist in a modern universe without people questioning it. I've made it that her identity as a fox is a secret and isn't known to the public.

She looks like a normal girl using some kind of magic to hide her ears and tails at will. When she joins the record label they give her a fox costume as her "gimmick" and so she cosplays her iconic pinky fluffy tails and a headband with blonde fox ears throughout her contract with the record label.

When she leaves the record label in 2015 (just like in the comics) she ditches her costume and fully embraces her gumiho form in POPSTARS.

I rewatched Britney 2.0 and the bts videos in preparation for the next recap epsiode.

New York: The Cassandra/Rachel drama goes on. Cassandra refuses to teach Rachel the tango. After a dance number with the help of Brody, a confrontation and an apology Rachel gets to learn the tango.

Rachel and Kurt find an apartment, Brody brings a housewarming gift and tries to kiss Rachel.

Ohio: Sue kicks Brittany of the Cheerios. Brittany acts out Britney Spears downward spiral to make a comeback and her plan kind of works. In the end Brittany rejoins the Cheerios.

Unique warns Marley about Jake, but Marley goes on a date with him anyway.

Puck gives his half-brother Jake a pep talk and convinces him to join the glee club.

Cringe moment: I heard Britney Spears wasn't happy that her life was used for a storyline.

Funniest moment: When Jake joins the glee club, he looks at everybody. I had no memory of their weird faces. I laughed out loud.

Cinema Starview Presents: The Idol…? 👎🏽

So, I’ve watched 3 episodes and have officially decided to stop watching. The reviews and critics of the show are right, but over exaggerate the narrative they’re trying to paint by sounding like prudes.

The series follows Jocelyn, an aspiring pop star, trying to have a comeback after suffering from a nervous breakdown, and the death of her abusive mother. These episodes revolve around Joce trying to reclaim her title as the sexiest pop star in America. With the hectic celebrity life, she begins a complex relationship with Tedros, a self-help guru and the head of a contemporary cult.

I won’t disagree with the fact that it DOES showcases the overly sexual stuff, but it’s not extreme, it’s just annoying, not needed and doesn’t move the plot forward. It’s just there for the ratchet sake of our current hyper-sexualized culture and overexposure of the female body. If there’s gonna be nudity, it should be equal nudity or none at all.

This show has honestly just confirmed that Sam Levinson definitely needs to be investigated in the future for how much he over sexualizes his white female characters. I won’t be surprised if Euphoria gets cancelled because of his terrible erotic writing. I think this show HAS ruined the mystique of The Weeknd by showcasing how he doesn’t care about women stories. I never knew he was this pretentious as he is. Lily Rose Depp is the only grace I can give this show, but she doesn’t save the show at all.

Also, we need to trash the entire narrative of the pop star with trauma, cause it never works the way it should and it’s always tying back to the negative press Britney Spears has received over the years. She needs a break, and shouldn’t be used for plot conveniency to progress a storyline about the darkness of Hollyweird.

I only kept coming back for Moses Sumney and they barely show Jennie, so K-POP stans were used and pandered to. Overall, I’m not watching or finishing the rest of this show.
