I woke up and the more i think about it the more "don quixote" and dr. Jekyll have the same kind of mindset, spoilers under the cut
Okay so i know they are totally different books but hear this silly literary student out, obviously don quixote is going to have don quixote as *her* literary reference. However even just in the base novels both of the main characters try to create an alternate persona to cope with the world, for same-same but different reasons, with one of these key differences being shame
Dr Jekyll created hyde out of typical victorian shame for himself, don quixote is doing it out of his desire to also escape society but is far more off his fucking rocker about it. Don Quixote is going on adventures to spice up life rather than feeling much shame about it- shame takes a backseat when compared to jekyll's "lost in the sauce of victorian society" type shit.
So that's why i find it interesting so many people in the fandom are talking about how don's real form is, by what we have seen of bloodfiends, totally different from her own ideals, and that the bloodfiend's shame of their nature and desire to be seen as someone great like the fixers is probably why they adopted the don quixote persona we know and love. What incident made them feel so ashamed or sad of herself will be interesting to see, but i cant help but think man, adopting a persona out of shame sounds very familiar
Unlike jekyll and hyde tho don seems to retain no memories from the bloodfiend, because while jekyll wanted to live through hyde so he could do whatever he wanted, the bloodfiend seems to *really* want to dissociate from the fact they are a bloodfiend, and a high ranking one at that
Can i just say tho that the fact she has to keep her shoes on to keep the bloodfiend at bay is the funniest, most clever shit and simultaneously being so stupid it fits don perfectly???? Like don in the book is also insane of course if he had a vampire he had to keep under wraps he would do something like this, and just like in the book where don becomes more like sancho after thinking "okay maybe i have gone a bit too silly" and vise versa where sancho becomes more adventerous maybe we'll get to see a sillier side of the bloodfiend that explains why don is so off her marbles herself.
Cause i think the only thing that im thinking at the moment is for a bloodfiend that is lacking the silly, they sure did choose a very silly method of becoming their alter ego, but im pretty confident we'll get the answer in the next canto
Okay that was some insane ramblings holy shit im going to go have breakfast

The doors to science for too long were shut to women—and the struggle continues—yet women still have managed to contribute invaluable work. Here are 5 open collections on JSTOR that feature the work of important women botanists and botanical artists.

i watch my assistant’s hands as they carefully draw up sterile diluent from a vial. the way their fingers curl elegantly to withdraw the syringe is something i could never get tired of watching. our eyes briefly meet as they reach for the vial of powder and inject the diluent into it. the two combine to form a milky lavender solution. i’m almost transfixed as their steady hands draw the fluid back into the syringe once more, and even more so when they deftly swap the old needle out for a new one in the same breath.
and then those hands—an exquisite arrangement of well-trained bone and muscle and sinew—present the syringe to me. one of my own skeletal arrangements closes around the barrel, and my pulse does something strange in my chest.

Some more Clavell x Sada x Turo doodles, alas I don’t have the time nor energy to do more/clean up things lol. Kinda ship it, for the drama I say! Anyway, more thoughts below:
I enjoy the thought that Turo + Sada aren’t that much younger than Clavell lol (in present day, I think of Clavell to be in his early 50s, the two profs around mid 40s), so being research buddies means being quite close, regardless of whether they were romantic or platonic. Good science buddies!!!
Clavell is the mom friend, Sada the one with a lot more spunk/energy, Turo with his dry sarcasm etc. Sada and Turo butt heads a lot, and Clavell is in the middle of it all haha. Poor him. Even if all three of them aren’t poly whatever, the thought of Clavell being close to them and Arven’s early childhood is a nice thought.
His departure from the group feels almost like a sign of the times, wherein the two other professors start obsessing much more unhealthily, and with less concern for other things. I think post the discovery of Tera Crystals, Clavell disagrees with them about continuing experiments, citing the issues of introducing foreign fauna, danger of operating a time machine, dangerous unknowns etc.I think Clavell retires from research, opting to be an Academy tutor.
Still, all this is unfair on Arven, so Clavell remains a pseudo uncle of sorts to him when he’s able. Eventually, he rises to the position of Director I suppose? Though there is that plothole of how he never knew the previous director’s cover up of school bullying... maybe he left the Academy to work somewhere else for a time or something. The timeline is murky i guess *shrug*
TLDR: I think I just enjoy the thought of three very different scientists being together, and then the dramatic breakup and tragic reunion years after haha. They’re all probably very OOC, if there’s at all enough source material to paint better pictures of their characters lol.

S1E01: Remembrance
Four years ago today, I saw the first episode of this new tv show which would become my new obsession and utterly change my life.
To celebrate, I thought we could take some time this week to remember some of the things we enjoyed about this episode, or that stood out to us.
I'll get us started with one of the things I truly loved about Ep 1x01:
Tumblr media
Dahj! Just... Dahj!
We only got her for one episode, and she was suffering for most of it, but I latched onto her character straight away and real hard.
I love that even with her very limited screen time, I still got the feeling she was a distinct character from Soji. Maybe a little looser, more flowing... (And yes, this perception is reinforced by the different hairstyles, which is another detail I adore!)
Tumblr media
(Look at these two! You can tell who's who at a glance from the body language, even before you look at the hair!)
Her little student apartment in Boston with it's Tragic Abundance Of Vanilla deserves to have a whole bunch of fics set in it! And even though it's just a cover story, I love her excitement at getting into the Daystrom! Just imagine the thrill, angst, and chaos if she had gone there and ended up working with Agnes - and the two of them discovering the truth about her that way.
Also, I love that Dahj is immediately adopted by Picards entire household, from the Romulan housekeepers/bodyguards...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
... to the Number One Goodest Boy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(No wonder the mom AI told Soji that Dahj was thinking about getting a puppy. It may have been a lie in the moment but clearly fit Dahj's character well enough to be believable.)
And of course there's so, so much more to love about her. Dahj's journey of self-dscovery, however chaotic and short it ended up being, was a great jumping-off point for the series, and by the end of episode 1, I was hooked!
Tumblr media
I still have so many fond feelings for Dahj and I really hope I'll find the time and brain space to write about her some time.
How about you? What are some things you remember fondly from this episode?
