i watch my assistant’s hands as they carefully draw up sterile diluent from a vial. the way their fingers curl elegantly to withdraw the syringe is something i could never get tired of watching. our eyes briefly meet as they reach for the vial of powder and inject the diluent into it. the two combine to form a milky lavender solution. i’m almost transfixed as their steady hands draw the fluid back into the syringe once more, and even more so when they deftly swap the old needle out for a new one in the same breath.

and then those hands—an exquisite arrangement of well-trained bone and muscle and sinew—present the syringe to me. one of my own skeletal arrangements closes around the barrel, and my pulse does something strange in my chest.

I wish you would write a fic where stucky are mad at each other for some reason but get forced into the same tiny escape pod and spend a very interesting hour pressed so tight together on their way back to the surface...

Not going to lie Bec - when I first saw this prompt, my mind immediately went one way, and one way only - and I'm pretty sure you just played me like a fiddle with this idea of yours and knew exactly what I'd write.

"Are you freaking kidding me right now Rogers?" Bucky shouted as he tried to wrest control of the tiny submarine, or whatever the fucking contraption Stark had purpose built for underwater expeditions, from his meathead best friend who never had a plan. "What the hell was that?"

Steve glared over at Bucky, who scowled back. "I had it under control."

"Under control, my ass. You ran us into a goddamn rock, a rock so sharp we now have a leak - and guess what? We just happen to be about three miles under the sea!"

"I - " Steve started to say then stopped abruptly to slam at the controls before him in the dim lighting, trying to unwedge the small vessel off the rock.

"Don't! Fuck Steve, leave it, don't get us off the rock - we'll tear apart if you do." The sharp edge of panic amidst his anger was clear.

"I know what I'm doing, Buck." Steve ground out.

The panic immediately disappeared leaving only ire behind, "I highly doubt that by looking at the trouble you got us into. I thought partnering up with Sam was a pain in the ass for those few months, but I'd somehow forgotten what you were like."

Bucky heard Steve grinding his teeth, and satisfaction filled him that Steve was at least angry at their hopeless situation, one he was solely to blame for.

They’d been tasked to go to the Raft - one of the inmates had managed to escape - Namor, and although Bucky thought it was way out of their scope of skills to be chasing a literal being that came from the ocean, who had super strength and a huge advantage by, well, being able to breathe underwater, the Avengers assembled and it was left to Cap, no, Nomad and Bucky to sort it out.

At first, the mission was fine and on track, they were given the craft from Stark, Steve assuring both Bucky and the cocky self-appointed head Avenger, that he'd used it many times over on missions, and away they went. Bucky had realised after an hour at sea as they dove deeper and deeper, Bucky wide-eyed at all the sealife and fish that swam into the lights from the craft, that Steve looked a little peaky, a little sweaty. Apparently, after some hard prodding, Steve admitted he'd only taken it out for a few runs in the East River and had never been in the ocean with it.

Bucky was fuming.

He became even angrier when they found Namor, and Steve without any hesitation hit a button that harpooned a weapon from the undercarriage, missing the man completely and hitching it on a nearby rock, careening them towards it. Bucky was certain he saw a smirk and a laugh from their quarry as he swam off - uncaptured. Free.

It was, in fact - quite humiliating for two usually competent supersoldiers.

So now they were fixed tightly onto a jutting rock bed, water leaking slowly into the vessel and Steve was acting like a massive stubborn child about their situation. Especially when they realised they couldn’t call for assistance - they were too deep for a signal.

As a starfish floated by and suckered itself to the window, making a home there, Bucky was starting to wonder if they'd get out of the situation in one piece. They may have the serum running through their veins, but he was certain drowning was still on the scope of things that could kill them. He glanced at Steve who was still pressing buttons - that and along with an irate best friend who had a penchant for knives.

The urge to strangle Steve and his handsomely stubborn face rose with each and every breath, and he couldn't fathom why he was in love with such an imbecile. Bucky, glad that Steve wasn’t aware of where his feelings lay, not wanting to openly tell such an idiot he loved him; though Bucky hadn’t really had an opportunity to approach Steve about it, unsure if he ever would find the courage to bring it up.

Plus right then... right in that moment as they floated and bobbed in the undercurrent while beady eyed fish approached them curiously, Bucky was livid and was certain that even if Steve turned to him to profess his undying love - Bucky would punch him in the face.

“What do you propose we do then smarty pants?”

Bucky’s mouth formed a tight line at the old taunt.

“I suggest we get into the escape pod and head for the surface.”

“What? And give up?”

“Give up Steve? Of course we give up. What the fuck do you think we can do?” Bucky exclaimed, as Steve grumbled into the small space. “For a brilliant strategist you sure are an absolute ninny sometimes.”

“A ninny?” Steve burst out in horrified disbelief.

Bucky felt his lip twitch and almost laughed at Steve’s expression and the absurdity of their situation that by calling Steve a ninny, is what pissed him off the most.

“The only way we can do anything of any use now, is if Namor comes back and surrenders. And I don’t think he’s about to do that, considering he sped off laughing when you marooned us on this damn rock. One I might add that has more strength and the ability to stay calm and think more rationally than you.”

“Are you seriously comparing me to a rock?”

“If the Cap fits.”

“Really?” Steve deadpanned at Bucky’s admittedly terrible attempt at humour.

And before Bucky could say anything further, potentially offer a simple truce, a large shadow loomed above them and Bucky was instantly caught in the beauty and grace of the huge marine animal swimming overhead, close enough Bucky could reach out and touch if there wasn’t glass between them. It looked to be a shark of some type and Bucky was captivated by the smooth skin, the sheer mass and the tail that flicked; until that same large tail hit the vessel on one of it’s sweeps, dislodging it from the rock.

With a triumphant yell, Steve pushed on the accelerator as Bucky yelled at him to stop, and suddenly the whole craft shook and groaned, creaking as the very structure started to unhinge.

“Jesus fuck, Steve. Get in the escape pod now!”

Steve for the first time since they entered the vessel listened to Bucky, and they both jumped up and scrambled for the pods that were situated behind their seats, opening the escape hatches - only to find one empty, and the other thankfully still in place.

“Shit, Tony.” Bucky swore. “Don’t you know about the Titanic? Always have enough damn life rafts. Fuck.”

“We can fit.” Steve said matter of fact and opened the hatch door, just as the thick glass from the front of the craft splintered, water spurting through and a loud cracking filled the space. Bucky’s heart thumped hard and fast at the danger they were in, his Soldier training all but useless in the face of this new terror.

Bucky pushed Steve, who yelped at being manhandled into the small space, and Bucky jumped right in, landing on top of Steve, their faces only inches apart - and that face did not look happy.

They had just enough room for Steve to hit the big red button that closed the pod, and an automated voice immediately filled the area.

“Releasing in three, two - one.” 

The voice went silent as the capsule whooshed out of the craft, and Bucky was on the correct side to see through the glass over Steve’s shoulder, the lights of the vessel flickering as it tore apart from the pressure of the water. Bucky let out a shaky breath that they’d escaped in time.

“Calculating your trajectory and location,” the voice began, then went silent for a few seconds, “you will breach the surface in just under two hours.”

“Two hours.” Bucky griped and wiggled, Steve hissing for him to ‘quit it’. The voice continued on in its modulated voice.

“Due to your depth, the emergency pod has been slowed to ensure you rise at the correct rate so you do not suffer any complications.”

“Complications,” Bucky said under his breath, knowing with the serum it was unlikely they’d get sick. “I’ve got a big bearded one right in front of me. I think that’s complicated enough - just get us to the surface quickly.”

The voice droned on about protocols and safety features for a few minutes and mentioned when it came into range it would send a distress call to FRIDAY for assistance. Finally some good news, because all Bucky could think about was the fact the enormous shark was not in sight. He hoped it was long gone.

“Can you move your damn leg?" Steve hissed, shaking Bucky from his contemplation of why he insisted on watching Jaws a few weeks earlier.

But it was the tone Steve used that irked Bucky further, and ever helpful, he moved his leg back and forth like a petulant kid. “That enough movement for you?”

“Buck, your damn knife is digging into my thigh. Actually why in the hell are you wearing it on an underwater mission in the first place?”

“Why did you bring your shield?” Bucky countered, not wanting to tell Steve about the other seven knives in his pants.

“That’s not really comparable.”

“It is.” Bucky replied sullenly, knowing it wasn’t at all. 

Steve sighed heavily, and they spent a good fifteen minutes without conversing, not even daring to look at the other in the soft green-tinged light from the control panel where Bucky could read their glacially paced progress as they headed for the surface. They were still so far down.

“Truth or dare? Steve suddenly asked, breaking the awkward silence.

“Are you for real? Now?” Bucky asked incredulously. “Look, I know that game worked when we were kids - but read the damn room, well, pod.”

Steve didn’t respond as the charged air between them rose in silent intensity.

“Truth.” Bucky finally bit out after a long minute.

“Why did you bring knives on an underwater mission?”

“Jesus Christ, you don’t let up, do you? Why am I even surprised, it’s Steven Grant Rogers asking. Because Steve, I take them everywhere. You know this. I might have had to stab some seaweed for being rude to your delicate sensibilities or something. And don't you dare try and say they haven’t gotten us out of tough spots before.”

Steve harrumphed, “I’m hardly delicate.”

“Sure thing.”

They fell silent again, until Bucky gave in and sighed heavily. “Truth or dare?”

“Truth.”

“Why did you lie and say you knew how to drive the boat?”

“Bucky, you don’t drive a boat.”

“Yeah, well you proved that without a doubt.”

Steve tensed up, Bucky experiencing Steve’s muscles bunching together against his body from being so close, he swallowed heavily. 

“I thought I had it handled. How difficult could it be?”

“Steve…” Bucky started, stopped then sighed, “Steve, you need to actually be truthful with me, to the Avengers, especially if you need help. You don’t have to prove that you have it together all the time, every time. That’s what I’m for.”

“So you’re saying you could have piloted the boat?”

“Is piloted correct? But in answer - no, I couldn’t have. So we would have found a better way.” 

“Buck, he’s an underwater being, what else were we going to do but try and follow him down here?”

Bucky remained quiet thinking over the options. When the call went out, only Steve and he were available for the mission, so in a way Steve was correct, but he wasn’t going to admit that.

Steve moved suddenly in an unintentional grind, and a spark flew down Bucky’s spine, shit, they were close, really close, and through his initial fear and anger, Bucky hadn’t really thought about the situation he’d inadvertently put himself in. Pressed up against Steve’s body in a way he’d never been before.

Oh shit…

“Truth or dare,” Steve asked, breaking Bucky’s thoughts on the bulge he could feel just slightly higher than his own.

“Truth,” Bucky gritted out, looking over Steve’s shoulder at the murky water surrounding them. “It’s not like we can do any dares down here.”

Steve paused for a moment, looking directly at Bucky, and Bucky finally gave in and glanced his way, holding Steve’s gaze, and knew immediately that he shouldn't have. Steve’s eyes had taken on a greenish-blue tinge, making them pop and they softened at the edges once Bucky was in their snare. Bucky let out a long exhale. He hated when they fought - but he was still annoyed that Steve hadn't listened or been truthful.

“Are you dating anyone?”

Bucky jerked in surprise, wincing straight away, as rubbing up against Steve wasn’t going to help him remain impassive. “What kind of question is that?”

“A simple one I would have thought,” Steve replied curtly, and Bucky saw the slight tick in Steve’s cheek, and he caught his breath. For some reason Steve was invested in his answer, but why? Could it mean..?

“We live together Steve. You know I’m not.”

“Not even Darcy,” Steve countered.

Unable to stop it from bubbling up, Bucky started to laugh loud and heartily before realising that the motion was doing nothing to stop the friction between them, and Bucky started to worry that the knives on his person weren't the only hard thing Steve could feel pressed up against him.

When he’d composed himself, he saw that Steve had tilted his chin up proudly, and Bucky knew he’d hurt his feelings.

“Uh, that’s a negative. Darcy and I are not dating, she’s like Becca. You know - a little sister, an annoying one too, and yeah I love her, but not in the way you think. To be honest I’d like to date…”

Bucky trailed off, realising he was about to give too much away.

“You’d like to date?” Steve coaxed, eyes riveted on Bucky as he looked slightly down at him, and Bucky wasn't sure he'd ever really get used to the change in Steve's physique. Having to look up to his once small friend, shoulders wide enough he was a literal tank.

“Tall, blonde people,” he admitted, face immediately heating; not meaning to let that particular parcel of words out.

“Oh.” Steve replied, face slack and wondering as he stared at him, the gravity in his eyes not letting Bucky look elsewhere. So Bucky shut his eyes to escape, berating himself for being an obvious fool.

“Dare,” Steve husked.

Bucky snapped his eyes open to find Steve unblinking, attention directly on him, and there was something lurking behind his gaze, something dark and delicious, Bucky uncertain if what he saw was real or not. So he thought about his response carefully before answering.

“Okay, Stevie,” and Steve inhaled sharply through his nose at the nickname, Bucky pleased at the response. “I bet you can’t get your hands to the control panel to turn on the exterior floodlight so we can see the fishes.”

Steve narrowed his eyes. “You want to see the fishes?”

Bucky nodded slowly, having a gut feel Steve already saw through his game, considering where Steve’s hands were positioned in the first place. Between their bodies.

Steve wriggled his fingers, and a live wire burned through the very structure of Bucky’s cells, remaking them into something different, something primal as Steve continued to move and pushed his hand between them towards the panel, inadvertently pressing hard up against the front of Bucky’s pants, right over his dick in the process. A dick that was suddenly much more interested in their predicament. 

Bucky might have made an error in judgement as he slipped out a strangled gasp.

Steve’s face lit up in a grin at Bucky’s unintentional response, deliberately mimicking the same movement again.

Bucky’s eyes fluttered shut, enjoying the touch through his tac pants, wishing for no obstructions between them, and before he could lose himself completely in the sensations, Steve's hand pulled free to touch the control panel, light suddenly flooding outwards. Tufts of seaweed and darting fish fled past the glass as they continued to slowly climb for the surface. 

And before he knew what he was saying, Bucky was pressing his hips the scant inch forward into Steve's body and whispered, "I dare you to do that again."

The ragged and shaky exhale from Steve was gratifying in its sheer emotion, and the 'Buck' that tore from his throat made Bucky look up. The moment his eyes met Steve's he was gone.

"Can I?" Steve asked, and Bucky could do no more than nod as Steve's lips came crashing down on his.

It was the kiss Bucky had been waiting a lifetime for, and he couldn't believe as Steve's tongue slipped in between his lips, a low deep growl erupting unbidden in his throat, that the catalyst was a failed mission where they were stuck together angry in a cylindrical tube in the middle of the ocean.

Steve's hand forced itself back between their bodies, and Bucky moaned as Steve made the best of the small space, rubbing over and over until Bucky grew thick and hard in his pants, all while Steve kissed the very breath from his body. Bucky was stunned that Steve was an exceptional kisser, partly impressed and partly jealous at the realisation that he'd had experience, more than Bucky first thought.

"Jesus Buck, you taste so good."

"Yeah?" Bucky husked back, leaning up as far as he was able, capturing Steve's lips again. What started as chaste, soon became hungry and insistent and Bucky tried to move his hands, but there was no room for two sets between them, Steve’s all that could fit; so Bucky let Steve take control, do what he wanted. And somehow, without even speaking about it, Steve gave Bucky exactly what he needed, what he craved. And if Steve wanted, Bucky would spend his lifetime taking care of Steve in return.

"Your fucking knife," Steve husked into his cheek as he pulled away, lips wet and thoroughly kissed. It was a spaced out look Bucky wanted to see more often.

"That's not a knife," Bucky sassed back.

"Well unless you're extraordinary and have two dicks, then yes, I think the one pressing just above my knee is a knife."

Bucky tried to adjust his stance to lessen the pressure from the weapon, and at Steve's wince, he knew he'd not managed to do it.

"Well to be fair, I wasn't expecting to end up in this predicament."

"Predicament?" Steve asked as his fingers pressed against Bucky's groin again, pushing and sliding to create extra friction.

"Oh shit," Bucky breathed, hating and loving the knowing smirk on Steve's face. "Maybe I've been wanting this for over a hundred years and you know, since nothing has ever happened before, how was I to know that being trapped in an escape pod, while seething in anger would do it for you?"

Steve looked blankly at Bucky, mouth open, shock clearly written over his face. "Over a hundred years?"

Bucky realised he had no filter when Steve had a hand on his dick, and flushed at the long kept secret, now a confession, but kept going, confirming it. He was all in by that stage.

"Give or take a year."

"Buck, why the hell didn't you say anything? I've been waiting since…"

Steve trailed off and Bucky couldn't help it.

"Since..?"

"I was sixteen."

"Fuck," Bucky surged forward, kissing the breath from Steve, and Steve's hand movements became more insistant. Suddenly Bucky felt the zip of his pants loosen and he couldn’t stop the wanton moan from escaping and he wriggled his hips in anticipation. Between one breath and the next Steve had somehow, miraculously snaked his hand into Bucky's pants, and now, now, there was only a layer of thin underwear between them.

Why the hell hadn't he gone commando?

"God, Buck, you feel amazing - knew you would.” Steve said as he looked into Bucky’s eyes while stroking him, and the sheer power behind his gaze pushed all of Bucky’s buttons. “Want to get my mouth on you."

Bucky gasped, vibrating at the imagery and Steve chuckled, nipping at Bucky's lips, kissing him again and again and it hit Bucky that Steve was able to feel every single quiver and sharp intake of breath he made. He was no longer able to hide his reactions, even if his face gave nothing away - Steve was so close that all of Bucky's tells were like a neon sign emblazoned above his head. Steve had him at his mercy.

And Bucky loved it.

"I want that," Bucky whispered back, "want your mouth everywhere. Want my mouth all over you too pal, I can't wait to get you naked."

"You're too much," Steve ground out and suddenly Bucky was being kissed deeply, thoroughly and he lost all concept of time and space. Steve's fingers gripped his dick, squeezing and making short jerky motions, it wasn't the greatest angle, and Steve didn't have full motion - but it was perfect. Bucky was so turned on, his dick weeping into his underwear, and he knew that if Steve kept going, kept kissing him, touching him, he was going to come in his pants like he'd done too many times when they’d slept next to each other before the war.

"Oh fuck Steve, keep doing that."

"You like that?" Steve husked, complying when Bucky nodded his head limply, rubbing in tight circles, fingers tangling in Bucky's underwear as he tried his best to get Bucky off. And Bucky, well he wasn't easy, it usually took him a while to get in the right headspace to feel comfortable enough to let go, to let himself be free in the moment, but with Steve he knew he could be. He trusted Steve, wanted him by his side always, and he knew he'd catch Bucky, protect him as he fell. Steve would never let go again.

"Gonna make you come on my dick," Steve rasped into Bucky's mouth, making Bucky forget everything sweet and hopeful in their future to concentrate on how filthy Steve’s lust driven words were, "going to fill you up, and I'm never letting you out of my bed again Buck. You're mine - you hear that?"

"I… yes… yours," Bucky said as his knees buckled, and Steve had him, gripped him tight, pinching his dick in a way that made Bucky white out and he came apart. Bucky spurted into his pants, underwear soaking up his release and he jerked and whimpered as Steve held him through it, mouth hovering over his, whispering words of want and desire. 

"You're gorgeous Buck, the prettiest fella I ever saw."

"Jesus Steve," Bucky breathed as he came down from his orgasm, legs still twitching. "You're going all Brooklyn and sappy on me."

Steve kissed the corner of Bucky's mouth delicately, as if he hadn't just got him off in the tightests of spots, and removed his hand from Bucky's pants. "Always felt sappy with you Punk."

Bucky grinned back, sated, happy and languid - until he felt it.

"Have you got a fucking bludgeon in your pocket?" he exclaimed when Steve shifted, and awed, Bucky realised exactly what Steve was packing in his plain navy shorts that were often tangled with his black briefs in the dryer at home. Steve's cheeks tinged pink and Bucky was gone, so gone on this man who was sweet and commanding all at once.

"Oh shit Steve, am I going to have fun with you."

"Yeah?" Steve grinned back, suddenly a little shy, a little hopeful and Bucky smiled.

"For the rest of our lives if you want."

Steve sucked in a breath, "I'd like that."

"The surface is less than twenty metres away, a rescue shuttle has been dispatched and will meet you on the surface."

The automated voice fell away, and Bucky and Steve looked over each other's shoulders at the lightened water, having completely ignored the sea of fish and marine animals around them. It was stunning, there was so much life just under the surface.

And before he knew it, they were blinded by sunlight as the pod popped up on the surface, Bucky finding Steve on top of him, all of his weight pressing him down as the cylinder floated in the ocean on its side. The sheer bulk of Steve was phenomenal, a portent of things to come.

"Far out, you're heavy." Bucky commented with a grin.

"Sorry, the serum… well you know."

"No, I like it." He said as Steve kissed him again, leaning down to take Bucky's mouth under his in a passionate but short taste. "But you're still an ass for getting us into that position in the first place."

"How did you know I didn't plan it this way?"

Bucky laughed just as the lid opened and he squinted into the bright light, the quinjet hovering over them, finding himself staring directly up into Clint's grinning face.

"Looking cozy there boys, need a hand?"

"I think we have that handled," Steve replied with a smirk, staring at Bucky, and Bucky could only gaze up into the brightest blue he'd ever seen, the eyes of his best friend, his soon to be lover and hopefully so much more.

It took some maneuvering to get Steve off him without toppling them into the ocean, but soon they were inside waiting as Bruce and Clint secured the pod to take back to Tony's lab.

Bucky made his way to the front of the jet as Steve called in their failure to Fury, and greeted Natasha who was in the pilots seat, stretching his arms up and over his head, popping his muscles from having been cramped up too long. 

She looked him dead in the eye in the unnerving way only Nat could, and remarked, "your fly's undone."

Red faced, Bucky looked over at Steve who'd heard Nat and was silently laughing, telling Fury that 'no, he didn't think losing Namor was amusing', before hanging up and motioning Bucky over.

"You really are a jerk." Bucky hissed as he pulled up his fly, finally realising how wet and uncomfortable he was. He needed a shower. Preferably with company.

"But I'm your jerk though."

"Gee, aren’t I the luckiest guy in Brooklyn," Bucky snarked back at Steve's playful wink, and for the entire trip home, neither of them could keep the grins off their faces.

A day later - Natasha brought Namor in.

goromcom: Let’s start with something about you. You know how if you open a Tumblr chat with someone you haven't chatted to before, Tumblr tells you two things they post about? I wanted to tell you that yours reports that you post "#black widow and #clintasha". I love learning about which other fandoms all of you are in! Black Widow is amazing, I really like that character! 

caedmonfaith​: Yep, caedmonfaith is my tumblr, and that's the only social media I have that's not facebook, really. And that's really interesting about the tags I'm associated with! Clintasha is the very first ship I wrote for, the ship that pulled me into fanfiction and started me on this wild journey, but I haven't written for Clintasha in almost five years. I guess maybe I was just more active on tumblr then, and that's why they're like that? I don't know... seems like Doctor Who would be one of the tags, since I wrote 141 Doctor/Rose fics! LOL And yeah, Black Widow/Natasha Romanov is amazing. I love her so much. I miss writing for her, honestly, but Good Omens has sucked up all of my attention.

caedmonfaith​: I didn't actually mean to choose 27 Dresses - it wasn't my first choice! My first choice was 10 Things I Hate About You. As soon as I saw the list of romcoms, I decided that was the one I wanted, and started plotting the story. I needed to pick more than one romcom, though, for claims (I believe the number we were supposed to pick was ten), so I picked nine other movies I thought I might be able to do something with without putting a lot of thought into it, because I was caught up in 10 Things. I used a randomizer to sort them, with 10 Things at the top of the list, and 27 Dresses just happened to be second. But due to a laggy connection to google docs, I got my claim form in about sixty seconds too late and my first choice was taken my the amazing Mia_Ugly! I was salty about it for a hot minute, then sucked it up.  I realized that she'd do an amazing job and got really excited to see what she would do. She's such a brilliant writer. 

As far as 27 Dresses goes... I remember seeing it when it first came out and thinking it was super cute. I'm a  sucker for romantic comedies, anyway, especially when they involve weddings, and James Marsden is absolutely beautiful. It's no hardship to look at him. This was my favorite role Katherine Heigl played, too. I remember watching the movie multiple times when it came out, because I enjoyed it so much.

goromcom: What's your favorite moment of your movie, and are you looking forward to presenting it in your adaptation? Any loose plans for that scene that you can share?

caedmonfaith​: My absolute favorite moment in the movie is one that isn't going to make it into my story, unfortunately. It's when Kevin is at Jane's apartment and she's trying on dresses to show him the range of things she's worn for all the weddings she's been in. She comes out in a ridiculous, hokey dress, and he says, "What is that?!"  She replies with a smile, "It was a theme wedding!" And he comes back with, "What was the theme? Humiliation?" I remember being really tickled by that line at the time, and it's the biggest moment that's stuck in my memory. Unfortunately, I don't have an organic place to put that line, so I'm having to scrap it.

goromcom: Do you plan to stick very closely to the beats of the original story, or make bigger changes?

caedmonfaith​: Confession time: I haven't seen the movie in ten years, since I was pregnant with my middle child! I debated about whether to watch it again to refresh my memory or to go ahead without watching, and to be honest, I'm still debating whether to watch it or not. I didn't want to follow the film too closely - I wanted to put my own spin on it, and worried that if the movie was fresh in my mind, I'd be more inclined to follow it too closely. But my beta has suggested that I rewatch, so I'm on the fence. 

I'm keeping the broad strokes of the film, but making some pretty significant changes. Crowley is playing the Kevin character, and he's a reporter who has recently had a 'fall from grace' after publishing some unflattering information about his publisher's wife. That's fairly consistent with the film, as I recall. But Aziraphale is taking the Jane role, and I've had to change him up quite a bit. In my story, he's a very sought-after wedding planner, nicknamed the 'Angel of Love'. In the film, Jane is in love with her boss and heartbroken when her sister, Tess, manages to catch his heart. The movie revolves largely around her turmoil over being a bridesmaid for Tess while watching the man she loves marry someone else. None of that made it into my story. There's no love triangle.

goromcom: Oh, I personally appreciate that change. Love triangles are not my bag, though they must be someone’s, as they seem to make it into lots of media.

Other than that, what's an interesting decision you've made in your planning so far--a notable casting decision, a changing of venue, or some other plan you have to paint Good Omens all over your rom com?

caedmonfaith​: The film takes place in an American city I don't recall, but I've relocated my story to London (and Tadfield). I have Crowley in the Kevin role and Aziraphale in the Jane role, as the romantic leads. Anathema features heavily in the story as a matchmaking American heiress who has made her home in England and writes occult books. Newt is her hapless fiance, a boring accountant who indulges his love's every whim. Madame Tracy is Aziraphale's assistant, and is married to Shadwell. I'm throwing in nods to canon as much as I'm able without shoehorning them: I don't want them to feel forced.

goromcom: I am blatantly stealing this last question from The Good Place: The Podcast, but here goes: Tell me something "good". It can be something big or small. It can be a charity you think is doing good work, or you can talk about how great your pet is.

caedmonfaith​: Oh goodness, this is a dangerous question. I have three beautiful, amazing kids, ages 14, 10, and 8, and they're all three awesome. My husband is handsome, wonderful, and incredibly indulgent of my fanfic writing, and I'm very lucky to have him. I could rhapsodize about any or all of them for hours, but I'll spare you.

I guess the most significant exciting thing on my horizon is that I have a major milestone birthday coming up on March 5. I'll be 29 again! (I'll actually be 40.)To celebrate, my best friend is throwing me a huge party at her house, and I have close friends flying into my town from New Hampshire and Seattle to spend a four-day weekend with my BFF and I. We have tons of plans to do fun stuff, and I simply can't wait. Happy Birthday to me!

For 2021, the Cayman GT4 is available with Porsche’s seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission. It’s the same gearbox you’ll find in a lot of the company’s other sports cars, and it comes with a number of benefits. Despite adding 68 pounds to the GT4’s curb weight, the Cayman is quicker with PDK. It’ll hit 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, compared with 4.2 seconds with the manual transmission. PDK also allows the engine to produce a skosh more torque — 317 pound-feet, up from 309 — and even makes the GT4 a little more efficient, with 1-mpg increases across the board. Of course, the result is a still-dismal 18 mpg city, 24 mpg highway and 20 mpg combined, but hey, any improvements are good.

No surprise, PDK works beautifully with the GT4’s 4.0-liter flat-six. Left to its own devices, gear changes are as smooth as they are quick, and they’re perfectly timed, too. The transmission knows when you’re driving hard and holds gears near redline to accommodate. Press the PDK Sport button on the center stack and the DCT is even more alert, keeping the engine revving high to eke out every one of its 414 horsepower. Feel like choosing your own adventure? Metal paddles attached to the steering wheel let you call up your own shift logic, and inputs are rewarded with immediate responses. I wish the paddles were larger and mounted on the column — the correct way — but as far as dual-clutch transmissions go, it’s really hard to beat PDK.

But while the DCT’s enhancements are undeniably clear, what the GT4 gains in objective performance it loses in subjective enjoyment. So much of why I love the Cayman GT4 comes down to its raw, involving character; in terms of driver feedback, modern cars don’t get much better than this. The standard six-speed manual transmission heightens that engagement, pulling you into the experience with a weighty clutch pedal, a hefty gear lever and a short-throw ‘box so tactile you’ll find yourself clicking through the gears at stoplights simply because it feels that good.

I’ve heard a lot of people complain about the GT4’s manual transmission, saying the gearing is too long to really make it enjoyable. But I don’t get the hate. Just because you don’t have to shift as often doesn’t mean you can’t. You don’t need to constantly run between 6,000 and 8,000 rpm in the GT4 to have a whale of a time; the 4.0-liter engine has ample midrange shove. You aren’t setting lap records on public roads, after all. If you want to shift, just freaking shift.

I wish the PDK car had larger paddle shifters.

Still, whichever transmission you choose, the GT4 is a brilliant car. Porsche’s 718 chassis can pretty much do no wrong, and in this most aggressive spec, it’s a joy to wring out over and over up and down my favorite canyon roads. A constant stream of feedback flows through the Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, and I can feel reverberations from the sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires up through the chassis and into the fixed bucket seats. These carbon fiber-reinforced chairs aren’t exactly built for long-haul comfort, but then again, neither is the GT4.

Yet at the same time, the Cayman is shockingly livable. The chassis isn’t so stiff that it’ll punish you for driving on rough pavement, which is remarkable considering how taut this car is on a mountain road. Wind and tire noise certainly make themselves known, but it’s nothing you can’t drown out with a few twists of the stereo volume knob. Or, you know, just open the sport exhaust and dig into the throttle. There’s nothing like the wail of a flat-six.

The Cayman’s interior is definitely showing its age, though the simple arrangement of fixed buttons on the center stack makes them easy to locate while driving, and there’s a satisfying click to their action. The fabric door pulls have yet to lose their novelty, and don’t forget, the Cayman is also quite functional. The mid-engine layout means there’s a deep frunk and a small but usable luggage compartment under the rear hatch.

If there’s one place where the 718 really feels outdated, it’s in the tech department. The GT4’s 7-inch color touchscreen runs the oldest iteration of Porsche’s PCM software with a relatively basic menu structure. You can get Apple CarPlay but Android Auto continues to be unavailable. Want the latest and greatest driver assistance features? You’ve got the wrong car, pal.

Look closely and you’ll notice this Gentian Blue GT4 has a roll cage behind the seats, but don’t get too excited. This is part of a Clubsport package that isn’t available in the US that includes a six-point seat belt for the driver and a lightweight fire extinguisher because, you know, racing can be dangerous. The only reason this specific car has the Clubsport option is because it’s a German-spec GT4 that Porsche imported to the US for testing. The European number plate on the front bumper isn’t just for show, is what I’m saying.

The 2021 Cayman GT4 starts at $102,550, including $1,350 for destination, and the new PDK option adds $3,210 to the bottom line. “Tidge I just can’t do it anymore.” You admitted, breath struggling to leave your throat as it constricted tightly in fear and paranoia. Everything could be heard through the thin walls. “I can’t.”

“And I refuse to have you leave my side,”

“No, no that was never a question. Just,” You paused, staring hard at the floor. “Power or my child!?”

And you were back where you started, on the floor, hands skimming over a roundness that wouldn’t be there anymore. The Administration saw to that. Snoke saw to that. You and your dear, dear best friend were to be left alone in the cold galaxy it seemed, any source of happiness to be siphoned off, every ounce of energy to be dedicated to the party.

“Why must they hate us?”

“Who, love?” Your husband murmured soothingly into your hair, a gloved finger attempting in vain to wipe away whatever salty tears trickled down your face.

“All of them.”

“I suppose it must be lonely at the top, love. Nevertheless we have each other. That’s all we need.”

“They told us when we were children that power was both war and intellect,” You stated calmly, hyper-active ventilation whipping wisps about of hair around your face as the rest of it was tucked into the neat crown braid you’d managed all your life. You were eighteen once, nearly fifteen years ago now. You were wide-eyed and soft and romantic and so was Armitage, though certainly shyer and much more reserved than you had been. And you’d both clawed your way through the Academy, holding your youthful husband close at night as he refused to cry, quietly seething at his father’s callousness and your father’s cruelty. Whether you be nine, sleeping together at an Academy camp or the night-time exploits of nineteen with a week’s worth of planet leave; the image never changed, fact remain you both refused to be parted.

Perhaps that was why you left the service, deciding that perhaps clerical work was quieter. And it was, but the information you had seen before you burned behind the lids of your eyes. You let far too many things happen and Tidge had been far too complacent in allowing them to happen.

Until Star Killer. He’d spent years attempting to convince himself that it was Arkanis and the outer rim planets’ only chances are liberation. Even Ren had hid own slow loss of faith in the plan. What fucking idiot didn’t know it was simply Death Star? It was doomed from the start. The numbers, the engineering… none of it added up.

And Armitage Hux, your clever, brilliant, cunning husband knew that. He knew there were flaws.

And he hid them. He hid them from Snoke, your fathers, every bit of brass worth knowing in First Order Command.

Why? You still didn’t know. And you doubted you ever would. But it wasn’t too difficult, Armitage had mastery of words and you of numbers and code. It took very little to hide the information, remaining unassuming and pale before the endlessly growing base.

“He’s left us in peace after all Starkiller, but that over-grown child goes AWOL and it’s our necks on the line.” His words were heavy with implication, you knew that meant death in returning to the Grand Master.

“We’re the children of a Brigadier and a Commondant, I suppose he expects better,” You mused, massaging your stomach as Armitage, now alarmed, assisted you in sitting down upon the grimy freighter’s co-pilot seat. “I was always the better pilot, my dear ginger husband,”

“Not in that condition, you can’t even reach your boot laces.” He sneered, calculating his next trajectory as you did as much as possible before yourself, rolling your eyes at the reminder. “I, I’ve…” Armitage’s face slowly began to shift, the usual sharp and aristocratic features giving way to an expression you hadn’t seen for a very, very long time. The familiar sense of dread, sadness and anger managing to claw it’s way to your already hurting heart.

Fear. He was scared.

“Tidge?”

“I’ve failed you, our children- I’ve failed our family.”

“Not your father,” You spat bitterly.

“No, not that fucking bastard.” He choked out a nervous laugh, but still, even strapped into the pilot’s seat and hidden in layers of civilian clothing he hadn’t worn for years. “I promised us our twilight years together, retired, surrounded by cats.”

“Yes, you did, didn’t you?” You recalled the hazy memory of seventeen, drunk on Correllian Whiskey and scared for what the future held.

“It seems I can’t even bargain a decade for us. Perhaps not even a month in my case.” And with every passing second his tired, heavy eyes would flicker down to the only legacy you two cared about now. Not power, not dreams of entire galaxies and a crown upon your head.

A child, innocent, with your curious eyes and their father’s equally as fiery hair.

Let them tarnish your names, let history speak of the despicable actions of General Hux and his insipid, barely-mentioned wife. Let those school students be cruel and let them judge their actions as they doodle little hearts and initials in the corner of their datapads, giggling with their best friends that they slowly fall in love with. Let them believe they could rule the universe the same way you and your best friend had once.

But in the process of a violent, raging star dying; the supernova and the ensuring black hole dragging and swallowing every planet and comet and every single piece of light in it’s wake, you hoped it would leave behind the swirling new star forming on the far edges of the solar system.

“We’ll survive it. We always do, love,” Your hand moved from your swollen middle to his cold hand, gloves discarded, forever, on the floor.

“We damned ourselves long ago.” Armitage admitted forlornly, smiling as well as he could. “It its perhaps my only regret I cursed you all as well.”

“No. No, we wanted the whole galaxy together. We’re not running. We’re…” You were lost for words, entirely unsure of where yourself and the former General were headed. “Where are we going, darling?”

“I don’t know, somewhere.” He admitted shortly, running a tired hand over his face. “I’ve sent it.”

Back to School: Don’t Sniff the Teacher

Ichiya Vandalay Kotobuki was renowned throughout the country—even theworld—for his fine perfumes. Men and Women alike purchased the Ichiya brand:sensual “All Fired Up”; enticing “Eros-on-Ice”; and theever-popular “Men!” Secretly, however, Ichiya yearned to be a lawyer.In his mind he saw visions of dazzling the multitudes with brilliant speechesand—more importantly—three-piece power suits with subtle-yet-exotic bow ties.It was in pursuit of this dream that Ichiya applied to and was accepted atFairy Tail Law School, an educational institution justly famed for itsexceptional scholars and the poor spelling of its founder.

As a mature student, Ichiya took his studies very seriously. Inpreparation for his first week of classes, he did all of the recommended pre-readingand had his faithful assistants Hibiki, Ren and Eve prepare attractive bindersand colour-coordinated post-it-notes, pens and highlighters. His first two daysof classes passed by pleasantly, his agile mind finding little difficulty inabsorbing the information presented. His classmates were generally attractiveenough to satisfy his well-developed aesthetic sensibility. They, in return,found him odd but surprisingly approachable, although his habit of sniffing newacquaintances made few students want to approach too closely.

Wednesdays were a long day for Ichiya’s entire first-year cohort. Thefinal session of the day was their first Criminal Law class, and even those whohad chosen law school because of a fierce desire to uphold truth and justice—distinctlylacking in the Corporate Law area—were tired enough to hope for an early end tothe scheduled two hour session. Their wish was destined to be granted by agenie in the unlikely—and slightly disturbing—form of their most dedicatedstudent.

Professor Makarov was both the Dean of Fairy Tail Law School and thefaculty member in charge of Ichiya’s Criminal Law course. He was a lawyer andprofessor of international calibre, and Ichiya had greased enough palms toensure that Professor Makarov would be one of his instructors. Ichiya wasdismayed, though not for long, when the professor introduced himself and thenannounced that most of the course would be taught by his teaching assistant,Ms. Scarlet. The name caught Ichiya’s attention and he stood up to see betteras the professor left and a gorgeous young woman with scarlet hair and animprobable figure entered the class from a side door to address the students.

Before she could begin, Ichiya flung himself down the stairs of theauditorium toward the serious-faced TA*, sniffing loudly and calling:

“Erza my honey! You are here! It is I, Ichiya!” Ignoring hershocked—not to say horrified—expression, Ichiya kissed her hand, twirled her ina circle, and bent down toward her neck inhaling deeply.

There was a resounding “Kiiiiiiiyaaaaaaaiiiiiiiii!” andthen Ichiya flew over the student’s heads in a trajectory almost asunbelievable as Ms Scarlet’s measurements. Demonstrating incredibleresiliency—and some might say a total disregard for personal safety—Ichiyapicked himself up off the floor, hair wildly askew, and trotted rapidly backdown the shallow steps toward the terrified TA.

“Erza, my honey, what a surprise! And to think that we get to spendtime together twice a week, every week for the next four months! Men! I amoverjoyed to be basking in your parfum once again!”

“Class dismissed!” shouted Ms. Scarlet, as she dashed backfrom whence she had come. “Class dimissed!”

Keeping a Secret Disagrees With You

Someone (ie- ME) was an idiot and forgot to cross post this on tumblr after it was revealed on AO3 for the Secret Santa Femslash Exchange. Twas a gift for chaotik/chaoticdanvers.

“Kara is keeping more than one secret from her lover and a terrible fate befalls her as the consequences of her actions prevent the restoration of her powers, so she goes into hiding to protect the ones she loves only to lose her sense of self-worth and purpose.”

Keeping a Secret Disagrees With You

Fading in and out of consciousness was not how she imagined this day to have gone. She expected, or rather hoped, that things would have gone more smoothly, that there would be no complications and that the day would be a joyous occasion. But the way things were, because of her damn alien biology and no information of the scenario, she felt as though her life were draining away. It was by pure chance they managed to get her adoptive mother there on time, her sister unreachable but it was close enough. Comforting enough. Her grasp on the woman's hand was as tight as she could manage but feeble in comparison to her usual grip as another wave of pain shot through her aching body and she cried out.

The next wave was swifter, sooner and she felt certain she would die in that instant as her world went black and her senses shut down. She had never felt such pain in her life, not when exposed to Kryptonite, not when fighting the toughest of aliens, not in the darkest reaches of her dreams remembering her own heartache and the loss of those she couldn't save. At least now it was over.

“She's passed out,” Eliza informed the room as she untangled her fingers and set the young woman's hand by her side and moved around the bed.

“Stuck!” one of the doctors grunted at the foot of the bed. Eliza had pulled on gloves by that point and crouched down to investigate, hands deftly moving to assist. She glanced up at her daughter's face briefly before her hands took purchase around the cord and she lifted.

“Wait...” she murmured, feeling another cramp build. “Now,” Eliza said despite her hand beginning to ache from the pressure it had endured. When the baby slipped out, the entire room sighed in relief, Eliza removing her hand in order to hold the whimpering child.

When the umbilical cord was trimmed, Eliza moved toward the wash basin as the rest of the team cleaned her daughter up and checked her vitals. “Well aren't you a pretty little girl...” Eliza cooed as she gently washed the newborn. Placing the baby on the table, she immediately moved to check her heartbeat and lung process. Satisfied, Eliza swaddled the girl in a soft blue and red blanket, holding her to her chest as she moved to the bed.

“How is she?” Eliza asked in a soft voice.

“It's difficult to tell when she'll wake up. Her body basically shut down mid-labour and being Kryptonian, we have no way of comparing her circumstances. Who was the father?” the other doctor asked.

Eliza's face hardened and she shook her head. “I don't know,” she said in a tight voice brokering no disagreements. “I will take care of the baby and keep an eye on Kara if you're done,” she announced, moving a chair carefully to her daughter's side. Once Eliza was settled, she felt herself relax significantly, more so when the prying eyes of the medical team had left. She sighed. “Oh, Kara...feel better soon. Your baby is so beautiful...” Eliza said softly.

Having watched the whole ordeal from outside the medical bay, feigning work on her tablet, Lucy waited a decent few minutes after their departure sans one important individual before entering quietly. Her eyes widened at the drained look on Kara's face as she laid limp on the bed. If she was a less observant person, she would have thought she walked into a far more somber situation. Biting at her bottom lip for a moment in contemplation she soon moved to the opposite side of the bed from Eliza, making eye contact for a moment before turning toward Kara.

“Hey...” Lucy murmured, grasping Kara's hand as she took in the woman's soft features.

“She was a trooper,” Eliza commented quietly, the baby in her arm slowly being lulled to sleep by the slight rocking it was taking part in.

Lucy nodded absently, a pang of guilt settling in her gut at the absence of so many important persons in Kara's life at this crucial moment in time. Missing the glory of the newborn baby. The first Kryptonian-Human hybrid was nothing to blink at but Kara had insisted on being off the grid, not letting others know what was going on. Not even Clark. Those that knew were of the DEO and only those necessary in caring for Kara's condition. Alex and J'onn were currently on a mission out of country as unfortunate their timing could be.

“And the baby?” Lucy asked, not daring to look at the baby. She had briefly earlier, startled by the stark green in the squinting eyes she had spotted.

“She's as perfect and beautiful as can be,” Eliza said in a fond voice, bending her neck to place a chaste kiss to the baby's crown. “Would you like to—” Eliza's voice trailed off and Lucy shook her head while swiftly moving to exit the room.

It was several hours before Kara reawakened, stretching as she normally did in the mornings, a sharp hiss of a groan when she felt muscles that never ache before tighten from their coils. Her hands drifted down to her stomach for a moment when she felt the receding bump that had made room for her—Kara sat up straight on the bed, eyes closed in momentary pain at the sudden movement. Where was...

Kara's breath caught in her throat as her eyes landed on the little crib that had been brought into her room, the small body sprawled out on the soft padding. Slowly, she crept out of her bed, wincing now and then at the still there pain coursing through her body but the desire to see her child superseded that concern. She took note of Eliza curled on a cot in the corner as she moved toward the crib and leaned over to take in her child's soft features as they rested.

She checked the tag when her mind kept throwing out gender neutral pronouns, unable to wait any longer to determine she had...a daughter, the tag informed her: “Baby Girl Danvers”. Tears sprang to Kara's eyes, fingers twitching to pick up and cuddle her baby girl but fear lancing through her at waking her now, or holding her inappropriately. She did reach out and run a finger over the baby's cheek, a gasp falling from her mouth at how impossible soft she was.

“Her eyes are the most brilliant green, sweetie,” came the sleep-roughened voice of Eliza from Kara's right. Kara smiled, turning to face her adoptive mother.

“Eliza,” she whispered, falling into the hug easily, suddenly feeling her strength leave her legs. “I can't believe it,” she added as Eliza moved them to the edge of Kara's bed and they sat down.

“You were wonderful,” Eliza complimented. “And she's beautiful,” she said, rubbing Kara's back soothingly. “How do you feel?”

“Overwhelmed,” Kara replied easily with a broken chuckle. “I ache everywhere, and my heart feels so full it will explode,” she admitted, pulling back to look at her child once more.

Eliza smiled softly before extracting herself from Kara and moving to pull the crib closer. “We had to give her some formula before she fell asleep because you were still passed out. We'll try breast feeding next time she wakes up, but for now she needs to rest. You both had a hectic day,” Eliza said, brushing a strand of hair behind Kara's ear. “I've already texted your sister and J'onn, by the way. They're pissed they missed it and promise to be home soon,” she added.

“I'm glad,” Kara said before yawning. “I want to keep watching her...” she said.

“I know, sweetie,” Eliza responded. “But you need to rest and heal up. Do you have a name yet?”

Kara's face softened further if possible. “Without yet seeing her eyes, I know that Kairi will be the perfect name,” she revealed. She sighed before sliding off the bed and moving to crawl into it once more. Eliza rolled the crib around to the side so Kara could fall asleep watching her girl.

“That's a lovely name,” Eliza said, unable to resist tucking Kara in and sitting with her until she fell asleep, body finally relaxing fully.

It had been a full month since Kairi's birth and Kara's powers still hadn't returned. She moved around the DEO bunker with relative ease, but her complexion was paler and she seemed significantly more human than normal, worrying the doctors. It was very strange, but Kara had admitted to caring less about her state of health than her child's.

Only when Vasquez mentioned Kara's extended non specific leave of absence in the second month did Kara start worrying about her job. Claiming a family situation in a new email to human resources, Kara also began to craft a job position for the online magazine so she could still work without technically being present at CatCo. It was difficult for her to make that decision as she loved working there, seeing her coworkers and friends, going to Cat when things became too hard or she needed advice, but it was necessary in protecting both herself and Kairi.

Kara was...scared would be the wrong term, but nervous about being exposed outside the DEO without her powers and terrified that she wouldn't be able to protect her baby from an attack, human or otherwise. It had been months since Supergirl disappeared from the media's eye, Kara refusing J'onn's help in keeping up a facade, but that didn't necessarily mean the delinquent aliens believed her gone for good. There was a slight possibility that they were teaming up, doing research on who Supergirl may be, though Alex had assured her that the friends who did suspect her secret had been checked in with.

It was with that reassurance that Kara decided to move back to Midvale into Eliza's home to raise Kairi and recuperate under the careful watch of her adoptive mother. When she arrived, Kairi secure in the car seat, placed delicately on the ground, Kara fell into Eliza's waiting arms.

“I didn't know what else to do,” she whimpered, body shaking with silent sobs, fearful of awakening her child. Alex came up beside her, suitcase in hand, rubbing soothing circles on Kara's back while sharing a look with her mother.

“It's alright, sweetheart. We'll try to figure this out together,” Eliza promised, smiling weakly back at Alex.

“I'll go get things settled, bring my cute niece with me,” Alex cooed softly, collecting the carrier and moving toward Kara's old bedroom.

Pulling back to gaze into Kara's eyes, Eliza cocked her head to one side. “Nothing's been working? The sunlamps at full power, adrenaline shock?” she queried, deciding to focus for the moment on the problem in order to solve it, to center Kara.

“Nothing. I watched Alex on a strike team be impaled by a Goron's tail and my powers stayed locked away. J'onn had to forcibly drag me away from the command center so everyone else could assist the team...” Kara said, bowing her head in shame. “And I can't...I can't protect Kai—ri,” her voice cracked on the name, tears slipping down her cheeks.

“Hey, hey...it's not the end of the world. Alex taught you to fight without powers, you're just as capable as any young woman with self defense under their belt,” Eliza said in a firm voice, refraining from mentioning the concern if it was discovered who Kara really was. That was the true fear amongst their little space family. Which is why Kara was here, working remotely at CatCo and officially off superhero duty. Eliza knew the time away would be beneficial in Kairi's formative months and years though, help their bond grow stronger, allow Kara time to grow as a mother and get used to that added responsibility.

Kara gave a watery smile that didn't reach her eyes before hugging Eliza again, not even slightly concerned with holding on too tightly. “I think J'onn is going to assign a DEO agent to hang out here to keep an eye on Kairi and I. I suggested Lucy if you don't mind...” Kara trailed off.

“Not at all. I think having one of your friends here will be good for you. Is she...alright?” Eliza asked. “She seemed off when Kairi was born, when I asked her if she wanted to hold her.”

Brows furrowed, Kara shrugged. “I don't know. I think she was overwhelmed maybe. I'll make sure staying here won't be an issue,” Kara promised, silently hoping Lucy was feeling well and things weren't strange between them.

“Someone is missing their mommy,” Alex's voice sounded from the stairwell, a gurgling baby cradled against her chest. Kara grinned, reaching out to transfer Kairi only to be cut off by Eliza.

“Nope, grandma first,” Eliza said, expertly holding the baby and peering into her face. “Who's the cutest little Danvers?” she cooed, brushing her nose lightly against Kairi's drawing forth a soft giggle.

“Guess I've lost that title forever,” Kara quipped, leaning into Alex when the redhead joined her side.

“Definitely,” Alex agreed, squeezing Kara's waist in their side hug. Taking a moment to study her sister as she was busy watching Eliza and Kairi, Alex noted how Kara's complexion remained paler than usual, her cheeks more sullen as though she wasn't eating quite enough—a lie, if ever Alex knew one because even with a human's capacity for food, Kara maintained a healthy consumption—and her eyes only occasionally shone bright blue nowadays. It was very strange but she had multiple tests running back at the base, continually consulted the Alura AI, and was very nearly working around the clock to solve Kara's power outage.

She silently hoped that these weren't signs of a worse condition.

She would be lying if she said not a single communique with Cat hurt. Kara craved that interaction, now more than she ever did but fear gripped her every time she was tempted to text her, call her, even emailing her was nerve-wracking. She justified it was best for everyone that she lay low on the radar and pretend to seep into the woodwork around as any normal human would. Kara threw herself into caring for and raising Kairi, being a supportive sister, and writing still. She even put in a little time painting once more, sharing the space with her daughter who quickly became entranced by the bright windows, splashy colors and enjoyable feel of paint on her fingers. Kara was quick enough to ensure those fingers never neared her face, however.

And Kairi grew and grew, Eliza monitoring the Kryptonian-Human hybrid with a scientist's eye, comparing it to the journal Clark's mother copied for her of his youth. She was beginning to develop powers far sooner than Clark had, causing Eliza to think of Kara's seemingly stronger genes due to arriving on Earth as a teen versus baby Clark.

When Kara found Kairi floating above Eliza's lap, spinning slowly in circles, she squealed in delight and came over to nuzzle the baby, pride evident in her tone. It was adorable watching the pair bond, despite the sadness in Kara's eyes, despite the fact she had yet still to regain her powers. They had made no significant advances in research either, though Eliza was surprised to hear Alex had supposedly made a new friend due to the constant chatter about how poor a pool player she was and how well they worked on cases together. It was pleasant and endearing hearing her eldest discuss her personal life versus her work and experiments.

In fact...

Eliza moved toward the entrance of the kitchen, peering around into the living room where Kara and Lucy were seated, heads leaning together as they talked conspiratorially.

“I don't know, Lucy. It's very suspicious. Alex doesn't really make friends. I mean, I'm happy for her but it's strange, you know?” Kara said, now able to feed Kairi without consistent eye contact.

“Hm...” Lucy began, putting on a show of contemplation. “Maybe...do you think...maybe Alex likes Maggie,” her eyes lit up with the prospect.

“Well, yeah of course she likes her. They wouldn't spend time together if not.”

“No, Kara. I mean...like like. Like...a crush,” Lucy said, resting her hand on Kara's shoulder.

 Kara pulled back from Lucy to better view her face as her own was scrunched up in confusion and curiosity. When she relaxed and realization dawned, her mouth gaped. “Oh my... Rao, you might be right!” she exclaimed happily, grin breaking across her features. “Alex has a crush!” she said, squirming in her seat with excitement.

 Eliza smiled as the pair continued to lament over not knowing more about this Detective Sawyer character, about wishing they were back in National City to hear things first hand from Alex, help her on this new journey. Jeremiah and Eliza always had a sneaking suspicion that Alex didn't like boys, but she went along with the date requests she received and played along. Eliza could easily guess the thought hadn't crossed Alex's mind until now. She was always hyper-focused on school, on Kara, and now her job and fixing Kara's powers that she simply hadn't the time to discover herself properly. But with Kara not pulling double duty as Supergirl...Alex was learning something new about herself. And hopefully they would all meet Maggie soon.

 Maggie did join them for Thanksgiving in Midvale, Lucy relinquishing her post to Alex so she could visit with her sister in Metropolis, sent with well wishes from the Danvers for Clark and the ever open invitation to visit. Eliza noted that there was a sliver of sadness in Alex's eyes and the occasional twitch with a particular word choice on Maggie's part, something she figured might have had to do with a rocky start and the sudden appearance of her eldest daughter some weeks previous. She had come home, acted distant and vague with Eliza and hid away in her or Kara's room with Kairi, but whatever that sadness was, she could also see it disappearing slowly and surely. She hoped Alex would let her know what had happened between her and the detective.

 Alex stood up from the table, wine glass in one hand as the other steadied herself with the wood. “There are so many things that I'm thankful for and—uhm—I—I'm honestly...I—I don't think I've ever really felt this much like myself than righ—than right now. So there's a...reason for that. And that reason...well,” Alex stumbled through her words, a few slurred as she waved her glass around so much the liquid would have sloshed out if it had been more full. Kara and Maggie looked on sympathetically, Eliza carefully schooling her face to display open curiosity and love, hoping Alex would tell her. “I'm...” she said lamely, biting her bottom lip. “Maggie's my girlfriend,” Alex decided to say instead of the g-word, sitting down abruptly to stare at her plate of food while her cheeks burned in embarrassment.

 Smiling Eliza took a sip of her own wine before replying, noticing Maggie reach for Alex's free hand to intertwine their fingers soothingly. “I know, sweetie,” she said, drawing the couple's wide eyes to her.

“You...what?” Alex asked.

“For months all you ever spoke about was this detective who crashed your crime scene, showed you the refugee side of aliens on Earth, your shared love of leather and bikes, and how horrible she was at pool,” Eliza explained calmly, throwing a wink in Maggie's direction. “How could I not know you were smitten with her?” she asked rhetorically.

“Smitten, smitten!” came the squealed excitement from the toddler to Eliza's right.

“Yes, that's right, Kairi. Aunt Alex is smitten,” Eliza said with a wide grin before tickling Kairi's sides, giggles erupting from the baby. When she looked back up, Alex looked abashed, her cheeks a far more suitable pink now. Maggie lifted a hand and softly raised Alex's head to catch her eye before giving her a quick kiss. Eliza found it incredible how quickly Alex melted into the kiss, so unlike those she had witnessed on her front porch when she was a teenager. This was right. Finally.

 Now if only Kara would find the same happiness again. There had been a brief period after Myriad that she was ecstatic and giddy, but after she discovered she was pregnant she became distant from her friends, seemingly avoiding whomever was Kairi's other parent. Kara had assured her and Alex that it was consensual and they were seeing one another but that she shouldn't have gotten pregnant and to preserve that friendship (of which Eliza has heard nothing of since Kara came to live with her) Kara had pulled away. Lies never suited Kara, but she was adamant in protecting the other person (because, yes Eliza suspected it was a woman, hence Kara's surprise at the circumstances of her pregnancy, but her scientific mind insisted keeping a gender neutral reference).

 It was a shame that Kairi wouldn't know this other person, coming upon six months of age, far more advance than any human child and certainly developing a Kryptonian's proclivity for buffet style food intake and talking already. Eliza tried to hint and push Kara to reach out but this was her life, her daughter's life and those decisions have to be her own. Though she was more than certain that reaching out to Kairi's other parent would solve the sadness Kara carried around with her. And maybe...her powers too...

 Eliza made a mental note to craft some questions for the Alura AI for when Alex returned to National City.

 The following week, Kara was attempting to write her latest entry for the online magazine, Lucy by her side playing absentmindedly with Kairi. Groaning, Kara closed the laptop and rubbed her temples. “I never knew how frustrating and painful headaches could be,” she grumbled.

 Lucy chuckled. “They are a nuisance. Kara...” she trailed off, eyes drifting toward the baby in her lap, instantly captivated by those green eyes. “Are you okay? You seem lonely,” she said, concern lacing her tone.

“Lonely...” Kairi whispered under her breath, head tilted to one side as she observed Lucy.

 Kara sighed, bowing her head and fiddling with her hands. “I don't...I don't feel like myself. Like I'm a shell of a person, Lucy and that something is missing. I couldn't...I could  not   be happier that Kairi's in my life but something else just feels...inherently wrong, missing. Like it's in my bones,” Kara explained, reaching over to smooth some of Kairi's wispy blonde hair from her face. She smiled softly when their eyes met.

“Something...or someone?”

“What do you mean?”

“Kara...we've been hiding the fact you got pregnant, that your powers are blown, that you're hiding out here with Kairi to...everyone in your life. If you weren't listed as an employee at CatCo, Winn and James would think you dead. Everyone's essentially forgotten about Supergirl at this point too, suspecting she's kicked the bucket,” Lucy explained in a kind voice. “Your entire life changed and you don't think that it has something to do with your mood?”

 Kara took a few moments to ponder Lucy's question, recalling soft lips against her own, something she hadn't allowed herself the luxury of for many weeks; it was too painful knowing she was right there and being so far away, protecting her. “I...I guess you're right...” she trailed off, tears pricking at her eyes.

“I know you're doing this to protect everyone but it's very likely the aliens pitted against you have given up and moved on. You can come back to National City and pick up your life again. We'll keep...working on restoring your powers,” Lucy said.

“It's been six months!” Kara couldn't help but ground out through grit teeth. It was a sensitive subject made worse by each passing day, knowing what she could do, or used to be able to do yet being unable. She missed flying amongst the clouds, listening to the soothing sounds of the city, no matter how overwhelming it could be at times, and she missed helping those in need.

 Lucy turned to face Kara, resting a hand on the woman's shoulder. “I know...” she murmured, sympathy evident in her eyes.

“No more lies, please, I can't take it anymore,” Kara said, finally making eye contact with Lucy, tears slipping down her pale cheeks. “I miss everyone, everything...I can't...I just can't, Luce,” her breath hitched as she swallowed the cry bubbling at the surface. Lucy wrapped her free arm around Kara's shoulders and pulled her in for as tight a hug as she could manage while cradling Kairi still.

 It was several long moments of sobs before Kara's breathing shuddered and the noise subsided altogether, her hands remaining tightly wound in Lucy's shirt.

“Mama?”

“Hey, baby...” Kara gulped, pulling from Lucy to press a kiss to Kairi's forehead. “I'm okay...I will be okay,” she promised. “I know what I need to do,” Kara informed Lucy.

 Though she knew what she needed to do, it didn't make matters easier, fear gripping her every time her finger hovered over that oft used number in her phone. And every time she chickened out and set the phone on her bedside table and forced herself to sleep. A week away from Christmas, Kara was tossing and turning without sleep taking her body, so she grabbed her phone, checked on Kairi and slipped out onto the roof overhanging the front porch.

 She stared at the stars for a while, hoping they would relax her enough for rest to come as they did in her youth. That was another thing Kara missed with her powers depleted; staring through the building to view the stars beyond. Though she felt more at peace in the brisk Midvale night, looking up into the great unknown, Kara wasn't soothed enough.

 Before she could second-guess herself, she hit dial on the number she was debating calling for several weeks now. Holding the phone to her ear she listened as it rang once, twice—god, this was a horrible idea—thrice—she should hang up—

“What the hell, Kara?! Do you know what time it is?”

 Kara exhaled sharply, unprepared for the shock to her system of hearing that staccato voice over the line. “Cat,” she said breathily.

 Cat sighed on the other end. “Kara...why have you called me in the middle of the night after  months  of no contact outside of...three emails?” her voice was taut, angry but laced with concern.

“I'm sorry,” she whispered, feeling the beginnings of a hiccuping cry in her body. “I...I couldn't...I...”

“Breathe,” Cat murmured soothingly. “Take a deep breath and try that again,” she said, ever the patient one even after Kara abandoned her. Them.

 She did just that, once again reminded how unworthy she was of Cat's affection and solidifying how right her decision had been after Kairi was born. But she started this call and it needed to conclude. Kara decided to start with the basics, even if phones could be tapped and listened into, “Cat, I'm...I'm Supergirl. Or was...”

 The chuckle Kara heard was unexpected and drew her brows together. “I know, Kara,” Cat scoffed and Kara imagine her shaking her head as though it were the most obvious thing in the world.

“Good...that will make...the rest easier. Hopefully,” Kara said, gripping the phone tighter to hold her resolve and not devolve into whispers and mutters.

 There was a pause before Cat inhaled and asked, “'The rest'?”

 Kara closed her eyes momentarily. “I know what I did was wrong, leaving you the way I did, and please believe me when I say I didn't mean to hurt you, but if you give me a chance to explain in person, I will understand if you want me to stay away for good,” she said as calmly as she could, despite how rapidly her heart was beating in her chest. Kara wouldn't be surprised if Cat kept her at an arm's length, pushed her away as she already did and want nothing more to do with her. Though, Cat had been pretty accommodating in regards to her job at CatCo.

“Kara...”

 She waited.

“I've missed you.” It was said in such a defeated, broken tone, causing Kara's heart to twinge in the worst ways, knowing she was the cause of that pain. How could she ever make it up to Cat now?

“I missed you too,” Kara whispered, biting her lip while tears ran hot down her chilled face. “Come to Midvale for Christmas?” she asked. “Meet my human family? Let me right my wrongs? Explain my absence.”

 Assuming it to be an autonomic response, Kara heard Cat huff out a laugh or two before she breathed in deeply. “Yes, I will be there. Christmas Eve I'll fly in. Carter's with his father this year anyways, so...” Cat trailed off, that twinge of sadness in her tone worrying Kara further.

“Thank you, Cat,” Kara whispered.

“Goodnight, Kara.”

“Goodnight.”

“Kara, to quote your first favorite version of Emily Blunt: you have got to calm down.”

“How can I do that, Alex, when Cat is being picked up at the airport this instant by Lucy? Alex, I can't do this!” Kara exclaimed, plopping down onto the couch beside her sister who angled herself in avoidance of a stray hand accidentally slapping the toddler in her lap.

 Alex ran a hand down her face briefly, catching Maggie's eye. She quirked a brow, smiling sheepishly. Maggie smiled back encouragingly, rising from the chair to peck Alex's cheek and collect Kairi. “Hey, pretty girl. Can I hold you for a moment?” she queried, relishing in the slight flush on Alex's face. “You're adorable,” Maggie told Alex before heading back to the chair with Kairi.

 Blush deepening for a moment, Alex then shook her head to focus on her sister, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and pulling her close. “I know it's scary, but everything will turn out alright. If there is one thing I've learned about Cat Grant from your needling that she isn't the worst human being on earth—because quite frankly my money's on Douchewell Lord—” Alex said, pausing a moment as a shiver ran down her spine. Maggie's brows raised in questioning and Alex shook her head, planning to explain later. “—is that she is, in fact, a compassionate, understanding woman. And I'm fairly certain she cares a great deal about you, Kara. Well, who couldn't? You're a ray of sunshine in huggable humanoid form,” she said, squeezing her sister tighter.

“Oh, Alex...” Kara murmured, clinging to Alex, burying her head in her shoulder. “You're the best big sister ever,” she complimented, pulling back with watery eyes.

 Alex brushed a strand of hair behind Kara's ear. “Easy when I've you for a sister,” she deflected, eye darting toward the window where her mother had drifted toward. ��You've got this,” Alex promised fiercely, a determined look in her eyes. Kara gulped visibly and nodded once firmly, trying to draw strength from Alex's adamancy.

“They're here,” Eliza announced, moving away from the door to stand near Maggie's chair and observe from a respectable distance. The hand dangling by the arm of the chair was quickly seized by her granddaughter and she smiled, turning to lift the child into her arms and bounce her softly. “You'll love her,” she whispered in Kairi's ear.

 Kara released a shuddering breath as they heard the door begin to open and Lucy strode in with Cat's heavier bag and set it near the stairs before collecting the one Cat had and placing it there as well. “It's beginning to snow lightly,” Lucy informed the household. “Roads are still fine but we don't need to leave the house until after Christmas,” she added, glancing between Cat and Kara who were staring at one another in rapt silence. Quietly, she moved to sit on Alex's other side, pretending to not watch the scene unfold.

 Slowly, Kara rose from the couch and crossed the distance to Cat, pausing in front of her to ask permission before enveloping her in a tight hug. Cat sighed, gripping at Kara's shoulder blades, breathing in the woman's scent.

 When she pulled back Cat's head tilted to the side and her lips were pursed. “Where's your strength?” she asked.

 Kara gulped, looking down at the ground in embarrassment as she kicked the floor absently with her toe. “I...I've lost my powers. They haven't come back. It's been six months,” she said. Cat's hands raised to cup her cheeks.

“I'm sorry to hear that,” Cat said, eyes softening in sympathy.

“No, you shouldn't be apologizing. That's my job, that's the reason for your visit, that's--”

“Mama?”

 Side-stepping Kara to peer into the rest of the living room and it's occupants, Cat's face grew contemplative. She spied the toddler first, far more still than average for a child her size, blonde hair and striking green eyes that captivated her for a moment. Cat recognized the woman holding the child, Kara's adoptive mother, Eliza and Alex across from her with that brilliant red hair more wavy than usual. Lucy seated beside her. And the Latina in the chair looked familiar but she couldn't recall the name immediately.

“Mama,” Kairi said in a stern voice, all but demanding Kara's attention. Kara turned around and walked over to her daughter, transferred into her arms and cradled against her chest.

 Fear gripped Kara with her back to Cat now and she immediately took refuge in Eliza's supportive face. Turning she endeavored to keep her face neutral, voice surprisingly even, “Cat, this is my...our daughter Kairi.”

 Cat was frozen on the spot, face devoid of any and all emotion as she processed the information, her brain working a mile a second, trying to look at the situation from all angles. How was this possible, why did this happen, was it a ruse, a lie to...no, Kara was many things but a gold-digger was not one of them; she would live in the streets before devolving to treachery of that sort of deception. But...how? Her eyes darted to the toddler in Kara's arms, a twinge of understanding crossing her features as she realized why those green eyes caught her attention so easily earlier. It was like looking in a mirror, one of the most prominent and characteristic traits about her own body. Those eyes...were hers.

 James' eyes were brown, the IT Hobbit's blue and though Lucy was a viable possibility if what Kara insinuated is true with her Kryptonian biology, it was unlikely due to how bright these toddler's eyes were, the same right swirl to her eyes.

 Feeling herself swoon and get light headed, Cat moved to the closest table, steadying herself with a hand on its surface. “I need a drink,” she murmured. Later she would realize that Alex moved swiftly from her seat to collect a drink as Lucy led Cat to sit on the couch, a pillow clutched tightly in her lap in a decidedly needed moment of weakness. “Thank you,” she said absently when Alex pushed the glass into her hands, ensuring the grip was sure before moving aside. Cat took a long sip of the surprisingly rich bourbon before sighing heavily. “So you're saying...that Supergirl over there...and I, a mere female human...procreated?” Cat asked, choosing her words carefully and speaking slowly.

“We didn't know this was possible either,” Alex chimed in, scientific side kicking into gear.

“If you need confirmation and are willing to do a swab test, I can run a maternity test against Kairi's genetics,” Eliza offered calmly, allowing Cat distance despite her urge to sit by the woman and rest her hand on her shoulder. Unfortunately, she didn't know the woman well enough to be that comforting and supportive. Maybe later she would allow it.

 Cat shook her head for several moments. “No I...no, I know. I feel it in my bones,” she said, unable to resist rolling her eyes at the cliche. “Something's felt of for months now and suddenly being here it's as though it's where I belong. That something missing has...” Cat mused, looking up at Kara with knit brows.

 Eliza smothered a grin as she looked down at the ground. “I had a theory about that actually, Cat,” she admitted, causing both her and Kara to look at her confused. She looked at Kara, hand alighting to her cheek as she rubbed it lightly. “Your complexion is brightening, sweetie, your eyes not as dull anymore,” Eliza said with a smile.

“What does that mean?” Kara asked, readjusting Kairi into a more comfortable position. Despite the tense situation, the toddler was on the fast track to snoozing in her mother's arms, missing the fact her other parent was introduced to her several moments previous.

 Glancing at Alex now seated on the arm of Maggie's chair, Eliza deferred to her child. “Kara we think...you've bonded with Cat on a...molecular level. Or perhaps a spiritual level, but there's not much information from the AI about Rao so we aren't sure there,” Alex explained. “You already had such intense feelings for Cat before you became pregnant and I'm mostly certain they came into play in Kairi's creation but because of those feelings or because of Kairi...you're now connected intimately with Cat. We believe your powers are tied to her and being away from her prevented their return,” she said.

“You're already showing signs of recovery...” Eliza murmured, wrapping a secure arm around Kara's shoulders, seeing the younger woman swooning with a bit of overload. Casting a quick glance at Alex who stood and collected Kairi, Eliza then moved Kara to the same couch Cat was seated on.

“Wow...” Kara breathed out, eyes wide in shock, arms wrapping around her middle as she processed the information much like Cat had when introduced to their child. “I...I I...”

“Shh...” Eliza said, rubbing circles on Kara's back, far too practiced in comforting Kara through a sensory overload.

 The room was silent for several drawn out moments and when Kara's eyes refocused she saw Cat had vacated her spot and was kneeling by Maggie's chair gazing at Kairi in Alex's arms. “Hey beautiful,” she whispered, running a soft hand across Kairi's head and down her chubby cheek. Slowly, Alex relinquished the toddler into Cat's eager arms.

 Cat sighed heavily, still trying to get used to this new reality. She was a mother for a third time over now. How would she explain to her sons? To Adam...oh god. But....she turned to look at Kara...it was worth it. Cat reached out a hand for Kara, smiling when their fingers entwined and she led them to the front porch to sit on the swing she saw upon her arrival.

“Why didn't you tell me?” Cat asked when they were settled on the swing, Kara's arms draped over her shoulder.

“My powers hadn't returned, I was afraid that Kairi, you, or Carter would be singled out by an enemy, especially if they figured out my identity,” Kara said, unable to lie any longer. She promised to explain and explain she would.

“Kara...she's my daughter too. I had a right to know the moment you knew you were pregnant and with my child,” was the firm reply, eye contact avoided as Cat felt disappointment and tears well in them.

“I'm sorry,” Kara whispered, biting her cheek to stop the onslaught of sobs she wished to release. “I was so scared. For everyone,” she admitted in a small voice.

 Cat finally looked at Kara, shaking her head. “You silly, brave hero...” she scoffed lightly, leaning closer to catch Kara's gaze. Then she pressed her lips to Kara's in the softest kiss ever, pouring into all of the fear and sadness from the previous months, the joy at discovering Kara was alive and that she had another child, the hope for a happy future with the two Kryptonians, the  love   she so obviously harbored for Kara. That was the single most important thing she needed to impart. “I love you,” she whispered when the kiss broke.

 Kara's breath hitched, eyes snapping open. Was this what happiness looked like? Curled up with the woman she loved, cradling their child? Could they do this? Together? Considering the brilliant team they had made in the past, there was no doubt in Kara's mind that she and Cat worked better together. Why had she ever thought she go it alone, parenting a super powered child essentially by herself. It was then she cried, quietly, in relief, resting her head on Cat's shoulders, fingers twitching to hold something but Kara knew her strength was returning.

“I love you so much, Cat...” Kara hiccuped when she regained the ability to speak. “Can we try this? El Mayara, stronger together?”

“I wouldn't dream it any other way, love.”

“The featured snippet pulls the core data from a top-ranking post and displays it in a separate box,” said Dale Johnson, co-founder and content strategist at Nomad Paradise. “To optimize, use H-tags throughout your web page so that Google knows what core data to pull (e.g. product headings), and use a relevant, engaging featured image — make it original, if you can.”

Featured snippets also have their downsides. Because Google is showing the answer to many questions right at the top of its results, “in some markets, half the searches don’t result in a click by the searcher. This means people search, find the answer and leave Google without ever clicking through to one of the results,” says Reuben Yonatan, a marketing agency and sales expert. “In this new world, it’s not enough to rank for keywords anymore. What good does it do if you rank number one for a search term, but no one clicks through to your website?”

For this reason, marketers should also focus on keywords for more in-depth content than what can be shown in featured snippets.

YouTube SEO

After featured snippets, YouTube videos rank on top. “More and more, Google is favoring YouTube videos in search results alongside web pages,” Johnson of Nomad Paradise says. “If you don’t currently market on YouTube, it’s worth producing video purely for this reason. Your core focus doesn’t need to be growth on the YouTube platform, because these videos are purely for embedment in web pages and search engine ranking.”

Just like you find keywords with low competition to rank for, you can find keywords relevant to your business with few or no YouTube videos and make videos for them. Your videos also need to be optimized. “The first part is the optimization of the title and the video descriptions,” says Annie Shulyarenko, a senior marketing agency manager at Hoppier. “The second and equally important part is to use closed captions. Not only will they make it easier for a portion of the population to consume your content, but they will also make your videos rich in keywords. The more keywords, the easier it will be to rank for your desired terms in Google.”

In 2020, video is a crucial medium. Faster network communications make video consumption easier, and platforms are increasingly favoring video content — which leads us to our next section. 

TikTok

TikTok is the new trending social networking platform. The current audience are mostly young people (under 25) who do not have much purchasing power. But TikTok does have its strengths. “What’s important for businesses to remember is that TikTok is very light and fun,” says Knezovic. “It is an opportunity to show a more creative and humorous side of your brand. Moreover, it is a very intimate platform, which makes it perfect for establishing a real connection with an audience.”

Advertising on TikTok can also be a great opportunity. Knezovic spent $40,000 on TikTok ads for the past six months and got 200 million impressions, over two million clicks and more than 400,000 conversions in results. TikTok’s audience is young, but “businesses that establish a connection with that audience now might reap the benefits once that generation grows older,” she says. “Brand recognition should be one of the main goals of using TikTok.”

Instagram

In 2020, there are two Instagram features you should focus on: story ads and direct messages. “A DM-based campaign I recently ran yielded replies of 42 percent,” Johnson says. “There’s an intimacy about direct messaging that ads and feeds cannot compare with. Systematically reach out to your following and treat it as you would an email outreach campaign. DMs eventually will become monetized and have ads, but for now few companies are using it as a marketing agency strategy.”

Another currently overlooked Instagram marketing agency tactic is using story ads. They were added in March 2017 but are still “significantly underpriced, averaging around six cents per click compared to Facebook’s 30 to 60 cents per click,” says Jamie Halper, founder and managing director of PrettySocial PR. “And 60 percent of all Instagram story viewers watch with sound, so utilizing a short 15-second video for an Instagram story campaign is key.”

Live video

Live streaming’s benefits are twofold. The number of digital natives who prefer the video format is growing, and brands are being challenged by cord-cutting and ad-blocking. Live-streaming not only appeals to this audience but also overcomes these challenges. Platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Twitch, LinkedIn and Instagram are all prioritizing live video. 

Many of the stats around live-steaming show that it keeps users more engaged. “Being able to respond to comments and questions live makes your users feel like they’re having a direct conversation with you,” says Barbara Hernandez-Taylor, head of product marketing agency for Azuga. “This will ultimately build trust between you and your followers, which leads to consumer loyalty.”

AR and VR

Two more under-the-radar technologies brands should know about are augmented reality and virtual reality.
