Brian Eno saw a series of postcards of a Chinese revolutionary opera and he got an idea for an album. He also nicked a title and since this is Eno we are talking about, he did not check the Peking piece, he just went wild with the concept. The result was him showing that rock was not the only genre he was interested in (one could say that was one of the reasons he left Roxy Music). He wanted to go beyond it, yet he was still serving the rules of the idiom at that point of his career. Nonetheless, he crafted fine off-kilter pop songs which also presented the path he was about to take.
